L’ambition des programmes de planification des naissances est de changer les conduites reproductives des acteurs sociaux à travers les messages sanitaires. Il s’agit d’une démarche pédagogique visant à susciter chez le récepteur du message une disponibilité au changement conforme aux prescriptions des programmes. À travers des exemples concrets, notre travail montre que la réalité est beaucoup plus complexe et que les acteurs sociaux ne sont pas des êtres passifs. En effet, leurs pratiques quotidiennes montrent qu’ils empruntent des arguments à des ensembles normatifs variés (coutume, religion, normes sexuelles mondialisées, etc.) pour justifier leurs actes. Ils hésitent, résistent, se soumettent… Loin d’accepter les normes « officielles » des programmes, ils les transforment à leur façon, les manipulent, les adaptent, les soumettent.

Bien que le public visé joue un rôle important dans tous les modèles de rédaction, peu de chercheurs se sont intéressés à la façon dont les rédacteurs en langue seconde (L2) conceptualisent leur public et s’adressent à lui au cours du processus de rédaction. L’auteur entend combler cette lacune en analysant quand et comment les apprenants de la L2 envisagent leur public lorsqu’ils écrivent en L2 et en s’interrogeant sur l’incidence du public visé sur leur processus d’écriture et leur texte. Chacun des 16 apprenants de la L2, à deux niveaux de compétences linguistiques en anglais (faible et élevé), effectue quatre tâches d’écriture nécessitant la rédaction de messages courriel destinés à des publics différents quant au degré de familiarité avec le rédacteur et à la position sociale par rapport au rédacteur. Chaque participant regarde ensuite un enregistrement vidéo de son exercice immédiatement après avoir terminé la rédaction de chaque message courriel et récapitule, en rappels stimulés, ses pensées au moment de la rédaction du message. Les messages courriel sont analysés selon une méthode multidimensionnelle, alors que les rappels stimulés sont codés en fonction des processus de rédaction (conceptualisation de la tâche, prise en considération du public visé et révision du message, par exemple). Les observations tirées de cet exercice indiquent que la tendance des participants à planifier, contrôler et réviser leurs textes diffère selon leur degré de familiarité avec les publics auxquels le message écrit est destiné. Les caractéristiques linguistiques des messages courriel que les participants écrivent varient également selon les publics visés et les groupes. L’auteur examine les constats résultant de l’étude et leurs conséquences pour l’enseignement et l’évaluation de la rédaction en L2 et pour la recherche dans ce domaine.

L’article propose une révision du modèle de la communication théâtrale dans le contexte des changements artistiques de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle lorsque les processus de production et de réception se sont avérés beaucoup plus complexes que ne le suggérait le modèle traditionnel hérité de la linguistique. Le concept d’espace vide est défini comme lieu de négociation entre le sens que porte le message produit par l’artiste (énonciateur) et les significations produites par la réponse du spectateur (énonciataire et auto-énonciateur). Il est une sorte d’interface entre la théâtralité, domaine du symbolique, et la performativité, domaine des formes primaires non encore investies de sens. L’article propose une analyse d’une pièce courte de Samuel Beckett pour mettre en lumière les stratégies de la mise en scène et la réponse du spectateur et un jeu d’interférences très particulières entre les domaines de la théâtralité et de la performativité, générées par plusieurs mises en abyme successives de la figure du présentateur, du narrateur ou même du metteur en scène.

RÉSUMÉ Dans le domaine de la publicité, le modèle de Petty et Cacioppo (1979) est encore largement reconnu pour tenter d’expliquer les processus de persuasion et de changements d’attitude du consommateur. Ce modèle ne tient pas compte du degré d’élaboration cognitive du message par le récepteur ce que vient résoudre le modèle de Mick (1992). Nous tentons d’établir des liens entre ces deux modèles à partir d’une recherche exploratoire portant sur les effets de lisibilité d’un texte et d’une image publicitaire. Nous avons mesuré les effets de la manipulation de certaines variables (niveaux d’implication, niveaux de lisibilité d’un texte et niveaux de lisibilité d’une représentation picturale du message publicitaire) sur le changement d’attitude, la mémorisation et la compréhension du message publicitaire. Nos résultats montrent que nos hypothèses se sont révélées justes sous implication forte, mais les modèles ne permettent pas de prédire le comportement du consommateur, en particulier la compréhension, sous implication faible.

Résumé Il s’agit, dans un premier temps, de caractériser et de situer la notion d’industrie culturelle dans le domaine plus vaste du message culturel, lui-même un sous-ensemble du champ encore plus vaste de l’information dans le secteur tertiaire de l’économie. Nous insistons ensuite sur l’opportunité d’une politique des industries culturelles qui puisse s’intégrer dans le cadre d’une politique globale et cohérente pour le Québec, face aux énormes pouvoirs culturels que détiennent les multinationales de la culture. Or, force est de constater que les données officielles de la comptabilité nationale sont peu ou pas du tout adaptées à ce champ d’activité qui, au surplus, subit une profonde mutation, imputable à la révolution technologique en cours, notamment dans le domaine de la micro-informatique.

Cet article prend pour sujet des expressions allemandes et françaises dans le domaine de boissons alcoolisées. Comme 11% des jeunes âgés de 17 ans déclarent boire régulièrement de l’alcool, une recherché comparative dans ce domaine promet une évaluation copieuse vu que ces habitudes linguistiques influencent également la façon dont s’expriment les plus âgés. La plupart du corpus a été récoltée, analysée et discutée lors d’une étude sur le terrain pendant trois semaines dans un des bars les plus populaires parmi les jeunes Leipzigois. Les abréviations constituent le phénomène le plus fréquent, suivies des métaphores ainsi que des expressions ironiques voire satiriques. Des néologismes sont également entrés dans le registre, par exemple l’acronyme Uwe (unten wird’s eklig – en bas, c’est dégoûtant), ce qui est une allusion au prénom masculin allemand Uwe et désigne la dernière gorgée d’une boisson. La traduction se présente parfois comme problématique en raison de jeux de mots ou de realia. Cependant, plein d’options lexicales sont disponibles afi de transmettre le message souhaité.

Cet article se penche sur les attitudes des femmes qui enseignent en études sur les femmes envers les hommes qui enseignent dans le même domaine et compare ces attitudes avec celles que les hommes ont d'eux-mêmes. La position prépondérante reflète une profonde ambivalence. D'un côté, ces hommes sont perçus comme des collègues indispensables ou, du moins, en principe souhaitables; de l'autre, on considère qu'ils se trouvent dans une situation paradoxale, leur présence dans une position d'autorité contredisant le message et l'objectif du cours. La démonstration présente cette ambivalence comme préférable à une acceptation inconditionnelle ou un rejet complet de leur place en études sur les femmes.

Les images mass-médiatiques courantes (illustration d’articles de presse, images publicitaires, affiches politiques et sociales…) citent bien souvent le domaine de l’Art (peintures, sculptures, photographies, images filmiques…). Ce dernier devient alors un univers de références à découvrir pour comprendre le message exprimé. De plus, découvrir les liens qui unissent les images du quotidien aux œuvres artistiques nous aide à mieux comprendre les sociétés dans lesquelles ces images sont produites. Cet article pose la question du lien entre les images, l’Art et l’imaginaire collectif et propose une réflexion didactique autour de ces liens.

Common mass media images such as illustrations for press articles, advertising pictures, political and social posters often quote the field of Art (paintings, sculptures, photos, film images…). Art thus becomes a world of references to be discovered in order to understand the conveyed message. Moreover, finding the links between the daily life pictures and the artistic piece helps people understand the societies in which those pictures are produced. This article discusses the relationship between images, Art and collective imagination and carries out a didactical reflection on those links.

This paper contains a review of the spatial domain steganographic literature. The purpose of this paper is to provide knowledge about techniques or methods that exist in the spatial domain of steganography. Steganography is the science or technique for hiding secret messages in other messages so that the existence of the secret message cannot be accessed by others who do not have authority. There are several popular spatial domains of steganographic techniques, namely LSB (Least Significant Bit), which is mapping secret message bits in the rightmost bit (LSB) of each color pixel and PVD (Pixel Value Differencing) which in this method offers a larger message storage capacity , with better image quality compared to other methods in the spatial domain. Because privacy issues continue to develop along with various digital communication technologies, and increasingly strong security threats, steganography can play a role in society to maintain the confidentiality of both picture, voice and video messages. For this reason it is important for us to be aware of steganographic technology and its implications.

ABSTRACT It can be argued that the most elementary message behind every commercial advertisement is 'Buy this', or, alternatively, 'Use this'. In consequence, we should perceive all the different adverts devised to promote a given article worldwide as interpretations of this single, basic message. The form given to this message when it was first conceived and devised, i.e. the images, the sounds, and the words that conform the proto-advert, will be subject to various changes or alterations in order to target different markets in the most effective manner. All the different forms under which the original message appears in different cultural and linguistic communities are, therefore, translations. The purpose of this study is to examine the different translation strategies that may be applied in the case of television commercials. The first part deals with television as a medium for advertising. The second part, with the translatability problems that arise in the specific case of a hybrid message of this kind (visual plus acoustic signals), as well as with the different ways in which such problems can be approached and solved. The procedures listed range from the simple literal translation of the text and a repetition of the same images in every case, to the creation of a completely new advert for each of the markets targeted. Finally, we aim at illustrating the effectiveness and/or drawbacks of each of those translation strategies by means of examples that have been extracted from British and Spanish televisions. Issues such as the way in which cultural gaps condition advertisements, and how stereotypical notions about national communities operate as publicity devices will also be explored. The opinions of some of the most prominent experts in international advertising, and those of the bodies that regulate this field of communication will be quoted when relevant. RÉSUMÉ On peut affirmer que le véritable message de toute annonce publicitaire n'est autre que 'achetez ceci', ou, alternativement, 'utilisez ceci'. Par conséquent, toutes les annonces conçues pour promouvoir un article quelconque à l'échelle mondiale doivent être une interprétation de ce message de base. La forme de ce dernier dans sa conception originale, à savoir les images, les soirs et les mots de l'annonce, fera l'objet de modifications ou de changements en vue de cibler le mieux possible les différents marchés, et cela avec une efficacité optimale. Dès lors, les différentes formes que prend le message original dans les différentes communautés culturelles et linguistiques, sont autant de traductions. La présente étude s'efforce d'examiner les différentes stratégies de traduction pouvant être appliquées en matière de spots publicitaires télévisés. La première partie aborde la télévision en tant que support publicitaire; la seconde partie aborde les problèmes de traduction qui se présentent face au cas spécifique d'un message hybride de ce type (signaux visuels + signaux acoustiques), ainsi que les différentes manières d'approcher et de résoudre ces problèmes. Les procédures mentionnées vont de la simple traduction littérale du texte, avec la répétition des mêmes images dans chaque cas, à la création d'une toute nouvelle annonce publicitaire pour chacun des groupes cibles. Enfin, notre but est également d'illustrer l'efficacité ou l'échec de chacune de ces stratégies de traduction, à l'aide d'exemples empruntée aux annonces publicitaires diffusées sur les chaînes de télévision britanniques et espagnoles. L'auteur explore aussi la manière dont les clivages culturels conditionnent les annonces publicitaires et comment les notions stéréotypées concernant les communautés nationales font office d'éléments publicitaires. L'auteur mentionne également, lorsqu'elles s'avèrent utiles, les opinions d'experts éminents en matière de publicité internationale et celles des organisations régissant ce domaine de la communication.

Qualifier la pollution de l’eau de crime peut sembler à première vue relever du sens commun et une telle pollution est déjà considérée comme un crime dans certains pays, à certaines conditions. Il importe toutefois de se demander ce qu’apporterait concrètement, pour lutter contre la dégradation et la pollution des ressources en eau, vitales, une telle criminalisation à l’échelle internationale. Du point de vue du message, la catégorie de crimes environnementaux aurait certes l’avantage de signifier la gravité des conséquences pour la société, et pour l’humanité. Dans ce domaine, comme pour les violations massives des droits humains, une telle criminalisation pourrait également contribuer à faire reculer, sinon l’impunité, du moins le sentiment d’impunité. Il demeure toutefois que la sanction effective de tels crimes requiert des conditions précises, souvent difficiles à satisfaire ; ainsi en est-il du fardeau de la preuve d’une part, et de la volonté politique d’autre part.

Jusqu’ici, et suivant une approche descriptive, on a cherché à répondre à la question « Comment traduit-on une publicité ? » en oubliant la nature intrinsèque du discours publicitaire. Et pourtant, pour pouvoir adapter un message publicitaire, l’opération que réalise le traducteur suppose et implique en amont la connaissance et la compréhension de la nature rhétorique de la publicité. Nous entendons ici par rhétorique la technique de la communication et du discours persuasif. La question qui se pose d’emblée pour le traducteur du domaine publicitaire n’est donc pas tellement « Comment traduit-on une publicité ? », mais plutôt « Que traduit-on dans une publicité ? » Suivant une approche prescriptive, nous analysons dans cet article le discours publicitaire en tant qu’acte perlocutoire, en nous concentrant sur l’argumentation et ses modèles les plus élémentaires. Nous proposons ainsi un survol théorique à l’usage du traducteur et fondé sur la théorie de l’argumentation appliquée à la publicité et à sa traduction.

Comme la didactique est un domaine de réflexions sur les pratiques d’enseignement/apprentissage et en raison de la difficulté des scripteurs à se représenter un équilibre entre les connaissances et les attentes des lecteurs potentiels de leur écrit, nous analysons les effets d’une variante du travail collaboratif sur les procédés de réécriture mis en œuvre en situation de production écrite individuelle, et par hypothèse, sur les capacités cognitives de prise en charge du lecteur différé du message. Il s'agit précisément d’analyser les développements du contenu sémantique d'un texte descriptif en français langue étrangère, écrit et réécrit en situation individuelle, par des apprenants de première année licence de français, suite aux annotations mentionnées par les pairs. Le socioconstructivisme (Vygotsky; Jonnaert) prône le rôle majeur des interactions sociales dans la construction et la reconstruction des connaissances. Les recherches sur la cognition soulignent le besoin de développer la responsabilité individuelle au niveau de la construction des connaissances.

IntroductionLe suicide et les conduites auto-agressives sont fréquents dans la population adulte. De précédentes études ont prouvé que le fait de maintenir le lien avec le sujet suicidant, par lettres ou cartes postales, après la prise en charge en aigu, réduit le risque de récidive. De plus, les études de faisabilité ont montré que l’intervention par SMS est acceptable pour les patients. L‘objectif principal de cette étude est de démontrer l’efficacité du dispositif de veille par SMS sur la réduction de la récidive suicidaire à 6 mois. Nous présenterons dans un premier temps l’étude de faisabilité puis l’étude multicentrique démarrée dans 8 CHU.Matériel et méthodeIl s’agira d’un essai de supériorité, contrôlé, randomisé, multicentrique, d’une durée de 2 ans, et piloté par le CHRU de Brest. Les sujets seront des adultes ayant survécu à un passage à l’acte suicidaire, inclus après une prise en charge aux urgences ou une courte hospitalisation. Le recrutement s’étalera sur une période de 9 mois. Les SMS seront envoyés à j2, j7, j15, puis mensuellement. Ces messages se soucieront du bien-être du patient, et lui rappelleront les coordonnées d’urgence dont il dispose en cas de besoin. Les patients seront évalués à j0, puis à 6 et 13 mois. Le critère de jugement principal sera le nombre de patients récidivant à 6 mois, dans le groupe recevant les SMS et dans le groupe témoin (qui bénéficie de la prise en charge de référence). Les critères de jugement secondaires seront le nombre de patients récidivant à 13 mois, le nombre de tentatives de suicide à 6 et 13 mois, le nombre de décès par suicide à 6 et 13 mois, dans les deux groupes. Les idées suicidaires seront évaluées dans chaque groupe, à j0, à 6 mois, et à 13 mois. Enfin, les coûts médicaux et la satisfaction seront évalués à 13 mois.Résultats attendusLa fréquence de récidive attendue à 6 mois dans le groupe témoin est de l’ordre de 18 %. Nous espérons la réduire à 9 % grâce au contact par SMS. Afin d’y parvenir, le nombre de sujets nécessaires a été évalué à 530, soit 265 dans chaque bras.DiscussionCe dispositif de veille par SMS s’appuie sur de précédentes interventions, aux résultats significatifs dans le domaine, et est facilement reproductible. Nous proposons d’évaluer son efficacité dans la réduction du risque de récidive suicidaire au sein d’une population d’adultes ayant fait un passage à l’acte.

Le langage de la politique, porteur d’une représentation idéologique des relations au sein d’une communauté donnée, est par définition un domaine de la lutte discursive. Cela implique qu’en dehors des significations proposées, il comporte aussi des tentatives de couvrir le message concurrentiel ou discordant. Différentes formes du tabou constituent par conséquent son élément inséparable. Or, le discours public d’aujourd’hui (avec son côté néo-populiste) est parsemé de remarques métalinguistiques dans lesquelles le mot tabou apparaît explicitement ou est sémantiquement présent sous forme d’allusions à toutes sortes de thèmes interdits. À travers une analyse des contextes dans lesquels ce mot ou cette valeur sémantique apparaissent dans un corpus d’allocutions d’hommes politiques français couvrant la période 2008-2015, cet article – inspiré en partie des travaux du groupe de recherche DiSEM – tente de montrer que, tout comme la critique du politiquement correct et de ce qu’on appelle communément « la langue de bois », le rejet du tabou chez soi et sa dénonciation chez l’adversaire politique s’apparentent, ces dernières années, à une sorte d’artifice rhétorique obligé.

Résumé L’historien de l’art allemand Aby Warburg (1866-1929), fondateur de la Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg à Hambourg (1926) – rétablie à Londres en 1933 sous le nom de l’Institut Warburg –, est célèbre surtout pour son approche originale des études culturelles. Spécialiste de l’art et de la culture de la Renaissance, il a transformé la conception de l’histoire de l’art de son temps en éliminant autant que possible la barrière entre les formes classique et populaire de l’art. Pour Warburg, une forme populaire, telle que le timbre-poste, était en principe aussi riche en tant que message culturel que l’œuvre d’art classique et devait jouer un rôle positif dans l’expression culturelle. Ainsi voulait-il, dans les années 1920, participer à la création d’une émission de timbres commémorant le traité de Locarno, le premier accord de coopération entre la France, la Grande-Bretagne et l’Allemagne, signé après la Première Guerre mondiale. Cet article suivra le processus de conception et de réalisation de ce timbre, prévu pour la poste aérienne et portant l’inscription « Idea Vincit », en soulignant l’importance, dans la République Weimar, de la création dans le domaine public de formes modernes de design.

Résumé Parmi les nombreux aspects de la communication en interprétation, celui qui a été peu étudié dans la littérature et peu abordé dans la formation des interprètes dans les écoles de par le monde, mais qui attire notre attention de façon particulière, c’est l’imagerie ou la représentation mentale. La représentation mentale a été définie notamment par Shepard (1978, p. 89) qui décrit un continuum de représentations mentales qui va depuis l’image la plus concrète (et visuelle) jusqu’à des représentations non visuelles de concepts, à savoir des idées sans image. Ce processus, qui consiste à construire une image ou une représentation mentale des concepts ou idées exprimés lors de la communication, a fait l’objet de nombreuses études dans le domaine de la psychologie cognitive, notamment en ce qui concerne la communication interpersonnelle. La présente recherche examine l’importance et le rôle des représentations mentales et des unités cognitives dans le travail des interprètes au moment où ceux-ci les associent à leur mémoire à court et à moyen terme pour reproduire un message entendu et démontre qu’il pourrait être utile d’insister sur l’importance de l’imagerie et de la représentation mentale dans la formation des interprètes dans les écoles et universités.

Abstract The problem of translatability or untranslatability is closely related to man's understanding of the nature of language, meaning and translation. From the sociosemiotic point of view, "untranslatables" are fundamentally cases of language use wherein the three categories of sociosemiotic meaning carried by a source expression do not coincide with those of a comparable expression in the target language. Three types of untranslatability, referential, pragmatic, and intralingual may be distinguished. On the understanding that the object of translation is the message instead of the carrier of the message, language-specific norms considered untranslatable by some linguists should be excluded from the realm of untranslatables. And since translation is a communicative event involving the use of verbal signs, the chance of untranslatability in practical translating tasks may be minimized if the communicative situation is taken into account. In a larger sense, the problem of translatabiliiy is one of degrees: the higher the linguistic levels the source language signs carry meaning(s) at, the higher the degree of translatability these signs may display; the lower the levels they carry meaning(s) at, the lower the degree of translatability they may register. Résumé Le problème de la traduisibilité ou de la non-traduisibilité est étroitement lié à la compréhension par l'homme de la nature de la langue, de la signification et de la traduction. Du point de vue socio-sémiotique, les "non-traduisibles" sont fondamentalement des cas d'usage de la langue dans lesquels trois catégories de signification socio-sémiotique transmis par une expression source ne coïncident pas avec ceux d'une expression comparable dans la langue cible. On distingue trois types de "non-traduisibles": référentiels, pragmatiques ou interlangues. Etant entendu que l'objet de la traduction est le message et non le vecteur de ce dernier, des normes spécifiques à la langue, considérées "intraduisibles" par certains linguistes, devraient être exclues du domaine des "intraduisibles". Et comme la traduction est un acte de communication impliquant l'usage de signes verbaux, l'éventualité d' "intraduisibles" lors des tâches de traduction pratique peut être réduite lorsque la situation communicative est prise en considération. Dans un sens plus étendu, le problème de "traduisibilité" est une question de niveaux: plus les signes de la langue source transmettent de significations aux niveaux linguistiques les plus élevés, plus ces signes peuvent mettre en évidence le niveau de traduisibilité; au contraire, plus les niveaux qu'ils transmettent sont inférieurs, plus bas est le niveau de traduisibilité qu'ils enregistrent.

People often avoid paying attention to health messages. One reason is that health messages can evoke negative affect, which produces avoidance. Prior efforts to reduce disengagement focused on changing message content or buffering the self from threat, producing mixed effects. The present studies test whether inducing positively valenced, low-arousal affect independently of the message or the self, labeled extraneous affect, promotes health message receptivity. Across four studies (total N = 1,447), participants who briefly meditated (vs. a control listening task) paid more attention to messages (Study 1). Increased positive valence facilitated attention, which subsequently increased message comprehension (Studies 2-4), whereas reduced arousal directly increased message comprehension. These effects generalized across extraneous affect manipulations, settings, information domains, and levels of message threat. Taken together, extraneous affect can be leveraged to promote message receptivity. This contributes to a theoretical understanding of how affect impacts persuasion.

For a secret message to be read and understood by a specific person only, a way is needed to hide the message, namely by steganography. Steganography is the concealment of secret messages in other media, such as images, audio, or video, so that the media inserted into the message looks as usual. Digital photos are one of the container media that are widely used for data hiding. However, when processing images such as compression, rotation, noise, and so on, confidential messages in the picture are prone to damage or loss. Then it takes the correct steganography method to hide secret messages into images to keep messages safe, not damaged even if the container image is manipulated, and the hidden message can be extracted again. on this thesis, applied masking method – filtering. Masking-filtering is included in the spatial domain. Message hiding is done by manipulating the luminance value of the image. Its use is applied to color or grayscale images. Masking serves as a tagging place on the picture that can be inserted message. Filtering passes a value to the marked section. the result is a stego image where the news is integrated with the container image, more robust to image processing when compared to methods that are also classified in the spatial domain, such as the least significant bit.

A la recherche de l'interprétation technico-scientifique: Approche abstraite du travail de l'interprete Interprétation abstraite Les prestations de l'interprete dans le domaine des communications scientifiques et techniques peuvent être accomplies, contrairement à celles réalisées dans d'autres domaines, de facçon ab-straite ou simplifiéé, en fonction de la nature spécifique de la matière interprétée, des partici-pants, d'une situation donnée et d'autres facteurs. Ce mode de travail est intitulé "Approche abstraite du travail de l'interprete" (Abstract Interpreting Approach — AIA). Le présent article traite d'une étude de praticabilité de l'approche abstraite du travail de l'interprete appliquée a Interprétation Chinois - Anglais et vice versa. Les dix situations et conditions pour lesquelles l'approche abstraite du travail de l'interprete peut être réalisée de façon pratique, sont mises en lumiere au moyen d'exemples bilingues. Elles consistent a tirer profit: 1) de la maîtrise qu'ont les participants de la langue utilisée dans le discours; 2) de la durée et de la continuité de la coopération instaurée entre les deux groupes linguistiques; 3) de la disponibilité de chiffres et tableaux utilisés durant les interventions; 4) de la redondance du message dans le discours original; 5) des auxiliaires audiovisuels utilisés lors de la séance; 6) des "termes techniques" particu-liers auxquels le personnel technico-scientifique a régulièrement recours; 7) de l'utilisation occa-sionnelle de termes et de noms contractés; 8) de la quantité d'information que l'un des deux groupes linguistiques ou que les deux groupes possedent; 9) de la fusion ou de l'abbréviation d'expressions répétées dans le discours d'origine; et 10) de certaines situations et conditions spécifiques, etc. L'auteur termine en concluant que l'approche abstraite du travail de l'interprete s'avere praticable et réellement efficace lors de communications et échanges internatio-naux. L'approche abstraite du travail de l'interprete constitue donc un sujet qui merite d'être discuté ultérieurement.

Grid environment is a virtual organization with varied resources from different administrative domains; it raises the requirement of a secure and reliable protocol for secure communication among various users and servers. The protocol should guarantee that an attacker or an unidentified resource will not breach or forward the information. For secure communication among members of a grid group, an authenticated message transferring system should be implemented. The key objective of this system is to provide a secure transferring path between a sender and its authenticated group members. In recent times, many researchers have proposed various steganographic techniques for secure message communications. This paper proposes a new secure message broadcasting system to hide the messages in such a way that an attacker cannot sense the existence of messages. In the proposed system, the authors use steganography and image encryption to hide group keys and secret messages using group keys in images for secure message broadcasting. The proposed system can withstand against conspiracy attack, message modification attack and various other security attacks. Thus, the proposed system is secure and reliable for message broadcasting.

This paper will consider the use of nonlinear dynamic (NLD) forecasting to extract messages from chaotic communication systems. Earlier work has shown that one-step prediction methods have sometimes been able to reveal the presence of hidden messages as well as the frequency content of the hidden messages. However, recovery of the actual hidden message usually involved filtering in the frequency domain. In this paper we show that it may be possible to extract the hidden message signal without filtering in the frequency domain. The approaches which will be discussed involve either the use of multi step predictions or a resumming process on the residuals after one-step prediction. For the multi step methods, two related approaches will be used. The first is primarily applicable to periodic signals, and will use the frequency information from one-step predictions to determine a block size to use for multi step predictions. The second will attempt dynamic detection of message signals using a windowed measure of the prediction error. For the resumming approach, it will be shown that even a lowest-order approximation can lead to faithful extraction of the hidden message signal for a ramping message signal that proved difficult in earlier work. These approaches will be applied to simple examples of communication schemes using signal masking and modulated chaos.

The impact of message abstractness on recipients is controversial. Research on person perception suggests that abstract messages are more influential, whereas research on communication and its outcomes suggests that concrete, vivid communication has greater impact. It was predicted that the latter also applies to the domain of person perception if the message contains unexpected (i.e., stereotype inconsistent) information. This prediction was tested experimentally. It was found that a message about a target person with unexpected content exerts more influence when it is concrete than when it is abstract. This effect generalized across different sources of communication (mass media and interpersonal communication). In line with earlier findings, messages from the media had a somewhat stronger effect than interpersonal communication. Implications for optimal message composition for the communication of knowledge about people are discussed.

Abstract English-speaking movies and television series are flourishing in Hong Kong, and Chinese screen subtitles are often provided to the audience. Studies relating to subtitling have often discussed reduction methods and reduction categories, but little work has touched on the areas of and reasons for under-translation. The author has observed that sexually suggestive information is often under-translated in English-Chinese subtitling. Some instances suggest that the under-translation is related to the translator's ignorance of English idiomatic usage, or the translator's insensitivity of the translation to the implicit information. Some other example indicates, however, that the translator is neither ignorant nor insensitive about the implied meaning. The translator has shown in the subtitling that he or she knows the implicit meaning, and that attempts were made to tone down the message a great deal, probably out of socio-psychological, cultural and euphemistic reasons. These observations based on video-taped examples have identified the existence of non-linguistic constraints in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural activities such as translation. Résumé Les films et les feuilletons de télévision parlant anglais ont énormément de succès à Hong Kong, et la plupart d'entre eux sont sous-titrés en chinois. Les études consacrées au sous-titrage parlent souvent de méthodes permettant de condenser le texte, ainsi que de catégories de réduction, mais on n'a jamais examiné le domaine de la sous-traduction ni les raisons de cette 'euphémisation'. L'auteur a remarqué que les informations suggestives sont souvent sous-traduites dans les sous-titrages anglais-chinois. D'aucuns suggèrent que la sous-traduction est liée à la méconnaissance du traducteur des expressions idiomatiques anglaises, ou qu'elle serait due à l'insensibilité du traducteur à l'égard de la traduction des informations implicites. D'autres exemples indiquent toutefois que le traducteur n'est ni ignorant ni insensible quant à la signification implicite. Des sous-titrages prouvent que le traducteur comprend la signification implicite mais qu'il s'est éfforcé d'atténuer grandement le message, et ce vraisemblablement pour des raisons socio-psychologiques, culturelles et d'euphémisme. Ces observations, basées sur des exemples enregistrés sur des cassettes vidéo, ont permis de constater l'existence de contraintes non linguistiques dans les activités de transfert linguistiques et culturelles que sont la traduction par exemple.

Résumé Le religieux et le sacré sont des notions qui réclament inévitablement leur rattachement à la sphère du transcendant dont la nature rend pour le moins complexe l’élaboration de critères d’évaluation quant aux pratiques inhérentes. Cet article analyse ainsi les obstacles qui se posent devant l’essai d’évaluation critique des traductions bibliques. Outre le niveau textuel et linguistique, toute évaluation doit d’emblée prendre en compte les dimensions théologiques latentes. Il importe de cerner le substrat théologique à l’oeuvre dans les positions traductologiques, en ce qui concerne le domaine biblique, de même que ce substrat agit dans les cultures sécularisées sous la forme d’un impensé ou d’un investissement de substitution. Les grandes lignes d’une étude de ce type sont ici d’abord suggérées en envisageant les difficultés que pose l’examen des Bibles confessionnelles et militantes. Puis est abordée la divergence, dans les trois monothéismes, des attitudes traductionnelles en regard de la textualité révélée : judaïsme et islam se rejoignent dans la reconnaissance de la dimension interprétative, tandis que le christianisme vise à l’efficacité dans la transmission du message. Il est enfin fait état de la question du messianisme et de sa compréhension, qui pèse avec la même pertinence dans les orientations traductologiques. La dernière partie procède à un retour sur la « nouvelle traduction » de la Bible parue chez Bayard/Médiaspaul, avant de conclure sur une défense du concept de « traduction athée » qui articulerait un principe d’altérité dont le texte biblique est le premier véhicule.

As data outsourcing services have been becoming common recently, developing skills to search over encrypted data has received a lot of attention. Order-revealing encryption (OREnc) enables performing a range of queries on encrypted data through a publicly computable function that outputs the ordering information of the underlying plaintexts. In 2016, Lewi et al. proposed an OREnc scheme that is more secure than the existing practical (stateless and non-interactive) schemes by constructing an ideally-secure OREnc scheme for small domains and a “domain-extension” scheme for obtaining the final OREnc scheme for large domains. They encoded a large message into small message blocks of equal size to apply them to their small-domain scheme, thus their resulting OREnc scheme reveals the index of the first differing message block. In this work, we introduce a new ideally-secure OREnc scheme for small domains with shorter ciphertexts. We also present an alternative message-block encoding technique. Combining the proposed constructions with the domain-extension scheme of Lewi et al., we can obtain a new large-domain OREnc scheme with shorter ciphertexts or with different leakage information, but longer ciphertexts.

Abstract This study aims at evaluating the translation of dubbed children's animated pictures shown on Jordan Television and other Arab televisions in terms of accuracy and faithfulness to the original text. In an attempt to achieve this goal, the researchers have studies the translations of (56) episodes of Arabic versions of five children's animated pictures. Upon close examination of the translated material, it has been found that most of the translators have given erroneous renderings of some portions of the original texts, thus distorting the message conveyed in the target language text and, consequently, affecting, in a direct way, the educational level of the children. The researchers analyse and categorise some erroneously translated words, phrases and sentences observed in the corpus of the study. They also try to attribute the errors to their possible causes. Finally, the researchers suggest alternative, supposedly more appropriate translations of the source language utterances. The study concludes with some recommendations which would hopefully enhance the process of translating dubbed children's animated pictures in general and improve the performance of Arab translators working in the field of English-Arabic dubbing. Résumé Le but de l'étude est d'évaluer la traduction de films animés doublés pour enfants, diffusés à la télévision jordanienne et d'autres télévisions arabes en termes de précision et de concordance avec le texte original. Dans un effort d'arriver à cette fin, les chercheurs ont étudié les traductions de 56 épisodes des versions arabes de cinq films animés pour enfants. Suite à un examen approfondi du matérial traduit, on a trouvé que la plupart des traducteurs ont donné une version erronée de certaines parties des textes originaux déformant ainsi le message transmis dans la lnague cible et, par conséquent, ayant une influence directe sur le niveau d'instruction de l'enfant. Dans le corpus de l'étude, les chercheurs analysent et categorisent certains mots, locutions et phrases observés et traduits erronément. Ils font également un effort pour attribuer les erreurs à leurs causes probables. Enfin, les chercheurs suggèrent une alternative et, par supposition, mieux appropriée des propos de la langue de départ. L'étude termine avec quelques recommandations qu'on espère, relèverait en général le processus de la traduction de films animés doublés pour enfants et améliorerait la tāche des traducteurs arabes spécialisés dans le domaine du doublage anglais-arabe.

We have synthesized an antisense oligonucleotide primer that matches a supposedly conserved sequence in messages for heparan sulfate proteoglycans with transmembrane orientations. With the aid of this primer we have amplified partial and selected full-length copies of a message from human lung fibroblasts that codes for a novel integral membrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan. The encoded protein is 198 amino-acids long, with discrete cytoplasmic, transmembrane, and amino-terminal extracellular domains. Except for the sequences that represent putative heparan sulfate chain attachment sites, the extracellular domain of this protein has a unique structure. The transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains, in contrast, are highly similar to the corresponding domains of fibroglycan and syndecan, the two cell surface proteoglycans that figured as models for the design of the antisense primer. This similarity includes the conservation of four tyrosine residues, one immediately in front of the stop transfer sequence and three in the cytoplasmic segment, and of the most proximal and most distal cytoplasmic sequences. The cDNA detects a single 2.6-kb message in cultured human lung fibroblasts and in a variety of human epithelial and fibroblastic cell lines. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies raised against the encoded peptide after expression as a beta-galactosidase fusion protein react with the 35-kD coreprotein of a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan of human lung fibroblasts and decorate the surface of many cell types. We propose to name this proteoglycan "amphiglycan" (from the Greek words amphi, "around, on both sides of" and amphoo, "both") referring to its domain structure which extends on both sides of the plasmamembrane, and to its localization around cells of both epithelial and fibroblastic origin.

Abstract Message passing algorithms, whose iterative nature captures complicated interactions among interconnected variables in complex systems and extracts information from the fixed point of iterated messages, provide a powerful toolkit in tackling hard computational tasks in optimization, inference, and learning problems. In the context of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), when a control parameter (such as constraint density) is tuned, multiple threshold phenomena emerge, signaling fundamental structural transitions in their solution space. Finding solutions around these transition points is exceedingly challenging for algorithm design, where message passing algorithms suffer from a large message fluctuation far from convergence. Here we introduce a residual-based updating step into message passing algorithms, in which messages with large variation between consecutive steps are given high priority in the updating process. For the specific example of model RB (revised B), a typical prototype of random CSPs with growing domains, we show that our algorithm improves the convergence of message updating and increases the success probability in finding solutions around the satisfiability threshold with a low computational cost. Our approach to message passing algorithms should be of value for exploring their power in developing algorithms to find ground-state solutions and understand the detailed structure of solution space of hard optimization problems.

Abstract Background There is a pressing need to craft optimal public health messages promoting healthy feeding behaviors among parents. How these messages influence such feeding decisions are affected by multiple interactive factors including emotional states, message framing, and gender, but these factors have not been studied in the domain of parents’ feeding of their children. Purpose To evaluate the role of message framing, emotional state, and parent gender on feeding choices that parents make for their children. Methods In 2016–2017, 190 parents (126 mothers) of 4- to 7-year-old children were randomly assigned to an anger or fear emotion induction and read either a gain- or loss-framed message about the importance of children’s fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption prior to choosing foods for their child from a virtual reality buffet. Results Mothers in an angry state who received a gain-framed message chose relatively more FV for their child in the virtual buffet, F(3, 180) = 4.77, p = .027. However, fathers in this group did not feed more FV, but rather reported greater intention to improve future FV feeding, F(3, 180) = 4.91, p = .028. Conclusions Providing gain-framed messages to parents, particularly mothers, in an anger state may be most effective for motivating healthy dietary choices for children. En droit privé, la logique du droit suit une logique des intérêts. La notion de droit subjectif sert ainsi de mesure dans la relation État-individu mais aussi d’outil dans l’ordonnancement des intérêts privés. Elle symbolise l’idée d’un droit coordinateur sans effacer totalement la référence à l’État. Le droit de manière générale s’explique d’ailleurs par la polarité entre individu et société. La distinction civiliste droit public-droit privé n’exprime qu’une variation dans le mode de son expression. L’abus de droit rend compte de cette polarité inhérente au droit en réintroduisant des valeurs sociales sur l’axe des rapports intersubjectifs. Le détournement de pouvoir devient ainsi, dans son langage, le détournement d’un droit. La common law n’a pas eu besoin jusqu’à présent d’exposer complètement cette polarité. Mais cela change, notamment dans les disciplines telles que la propriété intellectuelle. Les intérêts jusqu’alors juridicisés lors du procès et dans les décisions judiciaires se muent en droits dans le texte législatif. Ils ne sont plus seulement traités à partir des mécanismes processuels du droit. Avec la recrudescence de législations spéciales, le danger d’élever les intérêts les plus divers au rang de droits sans que l’on rende compte de l’axiomatique fondamentale du droit qui se réclame des principes de justice réapparaît. Or, c’est dans ces principes que l’on trouve les moyens de fixer les contours des droits et les fondements de la théorie de l’abus. Le message de l’abus doit donc être rappelé et trouve en propriété intellectuelle une application nouvelle et féconde. À en juger par la jurisprudence récente dans ce domaine, l’idée de l’abus est en vogue. Ce texte est la deuxième partie d’un article publié en deux numéros.

What are the attitudinal consequences of the growing pervasiveness of populism and nativism? We conceive of both populism and nativism as binary moral frameworks predicated on an antagonistic relationship between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Our study investigates the presence of spillover effects between these two forms of ingroup-outgroup thinking among survey respondents in the Netherlands. We posit that exposure to populist (nativist) messages fuels nativism (populism), but only among those positively predisposed toward these messages in the first place. A first survey experiment, focusing on antipathies toward refugees and Muslim immigrants, confirms the former expectation, but a second experiment calls into question the latter hypothesis. Moreover, the second experiment does not replicate the effects of populist message exposure on general immigration attitudes. We discuss several possible reasons for these mixed results.

In this paper, an agent architecture is proposed that can be used to integrate pre-existing components that provide the domain dependent agent functionality. The key integrating feature of the agent is an active message board that is used for inter-component, hence intra-agent communication. The board is active because it automatically forwards messages to components, they do not have to poll the message board. It does this on the basis of message pattern functions that components place on the board using advertisement messages. These functions can contain component provided semantic tests on the content of the message, they can also communicate with any other component whilst they are being applied. In addition an agent management toolkit, called ALFA, is described which offers a set of agent management services. This toolkit consists of a number of servers for storing the code of the components and symbolic descriptions of what agents regarding their component makeup. A third server uses all this information to facilitate launching new agents. Two prototype systems are also presented where the presented infrastructure has been applied. The one involves an agent based system used to control the environmental conditions in a building and the second is an agent based network management application.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test whether the simple exposure to different types of products can trigger different motivational orientation on consumers (prevention vs promotion), which in turn would match message frame and increase persuasion. Design/methodology/approach – Three experiments test whether exposure to product categories can trigger consumer’s regulatory focus orientation. Participants in the pilot study are students, while participants in the two other studies are consumers. Findings – A first pilot study randomly exposed participants to a product that could trigger promotion orientation (e.g. orange juice) versus a product that could trigger prevention orientation (e.g. sunscreen). Participants exposed to promotion (prevention) product suggest more promotion (prevention) strategies to reach a particular goal (preparing for their final exam). Study 2 shows that gain (vs loss)-framed messages using health appeals have better evaluations when featuring promotion (vs prevention) products. Study 3 generalizes these results using another sample and different product categories. Research limitations/implications – The paper uses some product categories and including other categories would increase external validity. Practical implications – The practical implication is to help marketers to choose the right health argument to match the product category they are trying to sell. Originality/value – Theoretically, the results from three studies show that exposure to products can temporarily trigger a consumer’s regulatory focus and that messages using health arguments that are consistent with this regulatory focus are more persuasive than those that are not. Managerially, these results help managers to adapt the right message in function of the product category.

Un geste suicidaire correspond à une volonté de changement vécue comme impossible et qui se solde par une rupture brutale. L’intérêt d’un recontact réside dans la proposition d’un changement tout en retissant ce lien qui nous unit à l’autre, aux autres. La communication de Vincent Jardon a pour objectif de reprendre l’histoire de cette idée du recontact et de la veille auprès d’un patient suicidant, d’en décrire les différentes modalités (cartes ressources, caring letters, cartes postales, appel téléphonique, SMS…) et ce qu’elles apportent (notion de connectedness, fiabilisation des soins). La démonstration de l’efficacité des soins basés sur le recontact, comme l’observation qu’un geste suicidaire suit régulièrement un événement de vie stressant, notamment dans le domaine social, sont deux arguments suggérant l’existence d’une sensibilité accrue aux stress sociaux chez les suicidants. P. Courtet proposera les arguments neuroscientifiques actuels (imagerie, neurospychologie, inflammation) en faveur de cette hypothèse. Il poursuivra sur l’intérêt des nouvelles technologies de la communication (à l’aide de Smartphones) dans l’évaluation in vivo des patients à risque suicidaire. Non seulement, il est démontré que l’évaluation répétée du risque suicidaire dans l’environnement naturel du sujet n’est pas délétère pour les sujets, mais en outre que ce type d’innovation apporte des informations de grand intérêt pour suivre les séquences environnementales conduisant à la génération des idées de suicide. Si le recontact téléphonique ou postal prévient la récidive suicidaire et que les Smartphones sont des outils pertinents d’accompagnement des patients, S. Berrouiguet a raison de faire l’hypothèse qu’un dispositif de veille par SMS aura un intérêt dans la prévention de la récidive suicidaire. Il présentera le protocole de l’étude SIAM et les résultats préliminaires d’une intervention par SMS (ou message texto), adressés depuis une plateforme Internet, destinée à la réduction de la récidive suicidaire.

The approach is socio-pragmatic, namely registers and pragmatics. The results of the study produce three messages, namely (1) form of'prohibition', (2) form of invitation, and (3) form of suggestion. The three forms of the message have unique vocabularies. Realizations of speech acti imply direct messages and indirect messages.Kajian ini membahas penggunaan bahasa pada papan petunjuk di objek wisata DIY. Bahasa pada papan petunjuk menarik untuk dikaji berdasarkan ranah pesan karena memperlihatkan kekhasan dalam pemakaian bahasa. Kajian bertujuan mendeskripsikan bentuk ranah pesan dan wujud tindak tutur.Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Pendekatan bersifat sosiopragmatik, yaitu register dan pragmatik. Hasil dari kajian menghasilkantiga pesan, yaitu (1) bentuk ‘melarang’, (2) bentuk ajakan,dan (3) bentuk menyarankan. Purpose – This study aims to explore peoples cognitive perceptions of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to inform decisions on message development with regard to message bundling, with limited research on the concept of bundling-related prevention messages and no studies that consider the bundling of HIV and other STD prevention messages. Design/methodology/approach – Individual and small-group interviews were conducted with 158 African American men and women to explore perceptions of STDs and communication preferences. Open-ended questions and a pile-sort exercise were used to elicit individuals’ judgments on similarities of 12 STDs, including HIV. Interview data were coded and analyzed for themes and patterns; pile sort data were analyzed using multidimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis to visualize the set of relations identified from the piles. Findings – STDs and HIV are associated with stigma, risk behaviors and personal responsibility. The card sorting activity revealed two primary dimensions by which people organized STDs: seriousness and curability. Potential clusters of STDs that correspond to participants described sorting strategies were identified and they may have implications for message bundling. Disaggregation of the data by sex and age revealed slight variations in the relationships of HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV) to other STDs. Originality/value – By identifying a set of cognitive attributes people use in organizing the overall semantic domain of STDs, ideas can be generated for how best to combine STD and HIV messages to meet public health communication goals.

Abstract Introduction Multiple factors drive specific therapy selection for patients with hematologic malignancies including efficacy, toxicity, patient and physician preferences, comorbid conditions, cost, and logistics. However, the advent of many highly effective and generally well-tolerated targeted therapies for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and lymphoid malignancies makes objective distinction between various therapeutic agents more difficult. As a result, the eventual therapy selection is often based on physician preference. Secure electronic communication portals (ECP) are federally mandated and frequently used in health care. Although important, ECPs impose a significant burden on the entire healthcare team. However, the extent of ECP use on healthcare burden is poorly ascertained particularly in hematology. While limited available data suggests that cancer patients are more likely than urology or family medicine patients to use ECP, healthcare utilization studies have historically not included this metric as a measure of therapy-related healthcare team burden (THTB). Our study not only uniquely evaluates the quantitative impact of ECP use on THTB, it also addresses qualitative domains that are used in ECPs to provide a holistic and granular assessment of THTB. Methods Patient and ECP data were retrospectively collected at a comprehensive cancer center after institutional IRB approval. The dataset included 412 patients with CLL and lymphoid malignancies treated with ibrutinib (n=237), acalabrutinib (n=70), and venetoclax (n=105). A subset of these patients with AML treated with venetoclax were also included to address disease and therapy specific issues. By leveraging common taxonomy from published literature, we created multiple domains specific to the evaluable metrics as detailed in the tables and utilized the Naranjo adverse drug reaction probability scale and provider documentation to code each message. Results Patients who had at least one patient-initiated or clinician-initiated ECP message thread were included in the final analysis (n=95, 23.06%). Table 1 shows patient, treatment, and disease characteristics. Ibrutinib was used mostly as initial or second-line therapy, while acalabrutinib and venetoclax were mostly used for later lines. We coded 3338 message threads, comprising 3272 patient-generated messages, and 2050 messages generated by 354 unique clinical staff. Our sampled population generated an average of 25.83 messages per patient and our healthcare clinical staff generated an average of 17.96 messages. Table 2 contains domain specific ECP interactions. Patient and healthcare team-generated messages were highest in the first six months of starting therapy and varied with treatment (p<0.01). Venetoclax use was associated with the highest frequency of interactions during the first 6 months of starting therapy. Both treatment-related and unrelated adverse events domains, as well as administrative and supportive care domains, as coded from the ECP, were highest in patients with CLL treated with venetoclax (p=0.005). This was similar for patients with AML treated with venetoclax (p=0.07), suggesting a drug effect rather than the disease process. Patients on venetoclax were also more likely to discuss supportive care and scheduling issues. Adverse event domain specific qualitative measures included comments like "have a scalloped tongue and metallic taste since starting acalabrutinib", "diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting persists since starting the ibrutinib", and "watery diarrhea persists despite the loperamide since starting the venetoclax". Conclusion Our study highlights an important but poorly described measure of THTB that can significantly impact therapy selection, especially when multiple therapeutic options with comparable outcomes are available. A non-reimbursed increase in ECP utilization poses significant THTB which is not easily offset by increased staffing efforts and might result in under-utilization of potentially effective therapies, especially in resource limited settings. In addition, our domain-specific appraisal of ECP allows for identification for improvements in healthcare delivery and intervention with structured enhancements that can maximize patient-centered care while decreasing THTB. THTB should therefore include ECP use and be evaluated as part of a comprehensive assessment tool. Figure 1 Figure 1. Security incidents such as natural disasters and power outages can cause inter-domain routing system regional failures, significantly impact the Internet’s safety. Reducing the impact of security incidents is essential for maintaining the stability of the Internet. One of the major impacts of security incidents is that many UPDATE messages will generate, which may easily cause network oscillations. This paper presents the UPDATE messages analysis during the six security incidents and finds that many duplicates and invalid messages are the leading cause of network instability. To effectively process these UPDATE messages, this paper proposes an UPDATE message preprocessing algorithm by analyzing the UPDATE operating mechanism to remove duplicate and invalid messages. Aiming at the problem of slow route search in existing route update methods using software-defined networking (SDN), this paper designs a RIB hierarchical structure for multi-level retrieval and proposes SMSEI-SDN combination with current route update strategies. Experimental results show that when a security incident occurs, by removing duplicate and invalid messages, SMSEI-SDN can reduce the total number of messages by an average of 19% and a maximum of 34.9% within the 60 s of caching time. Besides, SMSEI-SDN can reduce the routing update time by more than 99.98% compared to existing methods. This work provides insights for network operators and researchers interested in security incident impact suppression in the inter-domain routing system.

With the increase in the number of APIs and interconnected applications, API testing has become a critical part of the software testing process. Particularly considering the business-critical systems using API messages, the importance of repetitive API tests increases. Successfully performing repetitive manual API testing for a large number of test scenarios in large business enterprise applications becomes even more difficult due to the fact that human errors may prevent performing thousands of human-written tests with high precision every time. Furthermore, the existing API test automation tools used in the market cannot be integrated into all business domains due to their dependence on applications. These tools generally support web APIs over the HTTP protocol. Hence, this study is motivated by the fact that there is a lack of API message-driven regression testing frameworks in a particular area in which API messages are used in client-server communication. This study has been prepared to close the gap in a specific domain which uses business domain APIs, rather than HTTP, in client-server communication. We propose a novel approach based on the use of network packets for regression testing. We developed a proof-of-concept test automation tool implementing our approach and evaluated it in a financial domain. Unlike prior studies, our approach can provide the use of real data packets in software testing. The use of network packets increases the generalization of the framework. Overall, our study reports remarkable reuse capacity and makes a significant impact on a real-world business-critical system by reducing effort and increasing the automation level of API regression testing.

The performance of Time Warp parallel discrete event simulators can be affected by the cancellation strategy used to send anti-messages. Under aggressive cancellation, antimessage generation occurs immediately after a straggler message is detected. In contrast, lazy cancellation delays the sending of anti-messages until forward processing from a straggler message confirms that the premature computation did indeed generate an incorrect message. Previous studies have shown that neither approach is clearly superior to the other in all cases (even within the same application domain). Furthermore, no strategy exists to make a priori determination of the more favorable cancellation strategy. Most existing Time Warp systems merely provide a switch for the user to select the cancellation strategy employed. This paper explores the use of simulation time decision procedures to select cancellation strategies. The approach is termed Dynamic Cancellation and it assigns the capability for selecting cancellation strategies to the Logical Processes (LPs) in a Time Warp simulation. Thus, within a single parallel simulation both strategies may be employed by distinct LPs and even across the simulation lifetime of an LP. Empirical analysis using several control strategies show that dynamic cancellation always performs with the best static strategy and, in some cases, dynamic cancellation provides some nominal (5–10%) performance gain over the best static strategy.

This paper describes one integral display concept — Significance Messages — which communicates the significance of a numerical value of some continuous parameter. The Significance Messages System combines a variety of kinds of raw data using software techniques from artificial intelligence in order to build a qualitative scale that communicates what a numeric value of some parameter means about the state of the application world given the current context. The Significance Messages concept is built as a generic “shell” that knows about different kinds of qualitative states, contextual factors, and heuristics to focus on relevant data. The designer enters domain specific, parameter specific knowledge about alarm setpoints, automatic system setpoints, etc. and about the specific contextual factors that are relevant to the interpretation of that parameter in order to create a particular Significance Message Display for a particular application.

ObjectivesWith the unprecedented penetration of mobile devices in the developing world, mHealth applications are being leveraged for different health domains. Among the different factors that affect the use of mHealth interventions is the intention and preference of end-users to use the system. This study aimed to assess mother’s intention and preference to use text message reminders for vaccination in Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 460 mothers selected through a systematic random sampling technique. Initially, descriptive statistics were computed. Binary logistic regression analysis was also used to assess factors associated with the outcome variable.ResultsIn this study, of the 456 mothers included for analysis, 360 (78.9%) of mothers have intention to use text message reminders for vaccination. Of these, 270 (75%) wanted to receive the reminders a day before the vaccination due date. Mothers aged 35 years or more (AOR=0.35; 95% CI: 0.15 to 0.83), secondary education and above (AOR=4.43; 95% CI: 2.05 to 9.58), duration of mobile phone use (AOR=3.63; 95% CI: 1.66 to 7.94), perceived usefulness (AOR=6.37; 95% CI: 3.13 to 12.98) and perceived ease of use (AOR=3.85; 95% CI: 2.06 to 7.18) were predictors of intention to use text messages for vaccination.ConclusionIn conclusion, majority of mothers have the intention to use text message reminders for child vaccination. Mother’s age, education, duration of mobile phone use, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were associated with intention of mothers to use text messages for vaccination. Considering these predictors and user’s preferences before developing and testing text message reminder systems is recommended.

Different negotiation engineering domains require the system designer to tailor the negotiation framework according to the domain under which it will be used. This process of system design is timely consuming when supporting different geographically distributed and dynamic environments. Here we show a methodology to design negotiation systems by integrating domain-dependent message structure ontology with domain-independent marketplace architecture. The methodology gives the system designers a powerful modeling tool that can be used to tailor the framework in order to support different negotiation behaviors under different domains. The system entity structure formalism is used to build the domain-dependent ontology while the finite deterministic discrete event system formalism is used to build the marketplace model. The discrete event system with service oriented architecture simulation environment was employed to demonstrate a proof of concept of applicability to web service domains.

Background Social media has recently provided a remarkable means of delivering health information broadly and in a cost-effective way. Despite its benefits, some difficulties are encountered in attempting to influence the public to change their behavior in response to social media health messages. Objective This study aimed to explore the factors that affect individuals’ acceptance of using social media as a tool for receiving health awareness messages and adapting such content accordingly by developing a smart health awareness message framework. Methods A quantitative method was adapted to validate the hypotheses and proposed framework through the development of a survey based on the technology acceptance model with the extension of other constructs. The survey was distributed on the web to 701 participants from different countries via Qualtrics software; it generated 391 completed questionnaires, and the response rate was 55.8% (391/701). Results Of the 391 respondents, 121 (30.9%) used social media platforms often during the week, and 27 participants (6.9%) did not use social media. In addition, 24.0% (94/391) of the respondents used these platforms to seek health information. On the basis of the results, perceived usefulness (β=.37; P<.001), gain-framed message (β=.04; P<.001), and loss-framed message (β=.08; P<.001) were seen to positively and significantly influence people’s intention to use social media as a means to spread information about health promotion. The proposed smart health awareness message framework identifies 64.2% of the variance in intention to use, 55.4% of the variance of perceived usefulness, and 26.2% of the variance of perceived ease of use. Conclusions This study sheds light on the factors that are associated with people’s intention to use and adopt social media in the health promotion domain. The findings reveal that the intention of using social media for health awareness purposes is positively impacted by the perception of usefulness of social media and the design of health messages. Future research might seek to explore other factors that relate to people’s behavior. This point of view will assist health organizations in developing their health messages more effectively and to be patient friendly.

AbstractThe Simple Temporal Network (STN) is a widely used framework for reasoning about quantitative temporal constraints over variables with continuous or discrete domains. The inference tasks of determining consistency and deriving the minimal network are traditionally achieved by graph algorithms (e.g. Floyd-Warshall, Johnson) or by iteration of narrowing operators (e.g. ΔSTP). None of these methods exploits effectively the tree-decomposition structure of the constraint graph of an STN. Methods based on variable elimination (e.g. adaptive consistency) can exploit this structure, but have not been applied to STNs as far as they could, in part because it is unclear how to efficiently pass the ‘messages’ over continuous domains. We show that for an STN, these messages can be represented compactly as sub-STNs. We then present an efficient message-passing scheme for computing the minimal constraints of an STN. Analysis of this algorithm,Prop-STP, brings formal explanation of the performance of the existing STN solvers ΔSTP and SR-PC. Empirical results validate the efficiency of Prop-STP, demonstrating performance comparable to ΔSTP, in cases where the constraint graph is known to have small tree width, such as those that arise during Hierarchical Task Network planning.
