Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (DMMn) were synthesized in moderate yields by the reaction of methylal and paraformaldehyde catalyzed by solid acid. The pure components of DMM2, DMM3, DMM4, and DMM5 obtained by rectification were characterized by 1H NMR and mass spectra. The suitable components for blending into fuel were obtained by distillation separation. Furthermore, the combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel engine fueled with diesel and a blended fuel of DMM3-5 and diesel were investigated respectively.

Distributed model management systems (DMMS) represent the next frontier in the organizational usage of DSS technology. Due to the growing popularity of distributed computing systems and increased level of modelling activity in most organizations, significant benefits can be realized through the implementation of a DMMS. In several ways, the functions of a DMMS can be viewed as isomorphic to those of a distributed database system. This paper describes the objectives of a distributed model management system and discusses several important issues that must be considered before constructing the distributed model base. In addition, a layered schema architecture is suggested for designing the DMMS. The proposed architecture facilitates sharing, control, consistency and integration of models, without altering the current model representation schemes. This paper also examines the roles of different individuals responsible for managing the DMMS.

Abstract Context.—Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (MRCC) involving the thorax can be difficult to distinguish from diffuse malignant mesothelioma (DMM) using traditional morphologic approaches. Standard panels of immunohistochemical markers are of limited benefit. Objective.—To investigate several antibodies to renal cell carcinoma–associated proteins for differentiating MRCC from DMM. Design.—One hundred DMMs and 20 MRCCs were evaluated for immunoexpression of erythropoietin. The same cases and an additional 45 DMMs were evaluated for CD10 and renal cell carcinoma marker (RCCMa) immunoreactivity. Results.—Erythropoietin was expressed in 100% of DMMs and MRCCs. Staining for CD10 was observed in 54% of DMMs and 100% of MRCCs. RCCMa stained 26% of DMMs and 55% of MRCCs. Although erythropoietin staining was similarly strong and diffuse in both DMM and MRC, patterns of staining for RCCMa and CD10 differed between MRCC and DMM. Immunoreactivity was strong and diffuse for both RCCMa and CD10 in most MRCCs. Of CD10-positive DMMs, nearly half showed staining in less than 50% of tumor cells and about one fourth of positive cases exhibited only weak to moderately intense staining. Only half of RCCMa-positive DMMs showed staining in more than 49% of tumor cells and staining was only weak to moderately intense in most cases. Conclusions.—Given the overlap in the expression of renal cell carcinoma markers in MRCC and DMM, results with these markers must be interpreted cautiously and should be used in conjunction with mesothelium-associated markers. Differences in expression may potentially help distinguish MRCC from DMM inasmuch as strong and diffuse expression of RCCMa and CD10 supports a diagnosis of MRCC over DMM.

Abstract Double multilayer monochromators (DMMs) for 40 keV and 110 keV have been installed at BL20B2 in SPring-8. The DMMs provide X-rays with a few percent bandwidths at those energies. The flux density of the X-rays is more than several hundred times higher than that of monochromatic X-rays with a silicon double crystal monochromator, which enables us to perform high-speed X-ray imaging with a large field of view and high spatial resolution X-ray imaging in those high-energy X-rays. Here characteristics of DMMs and some demonstrations of X-ray imaging using the high flux density beams are shown.

Purpose. DNA methylation alterations play important roles in initiation and progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). In this study, we attempted to identify differentially methylated mRNA signatures with prognostic value for ccRCC. Methods. The mRNA methylation and expression profiling data of 306 ccRCC tumors were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to screen differentially methylated lncRNAs and mRNAs (DMLs and DMMs) between bad and good prognosis patients. Uni- and multivariable Cox regression analyses and LASSO Cox-PH regression analysis were used to select prognostic lncRNAs and mRNAs. Corresponding risk scores were calculated and compared for predictive performance in the training set using Kaplan-Meier OS and ROC curve analyses. The optimal risk score was then identified and validated in the validation set. Function enrichment analysis was conducted. Results. This study screened 461 DMMs and 63 DMLs between good prognosis and bad prognosis patients, and furthermore, nine mRNAs and six lncRNAs were identified as potential prognostic molecules. Compared to nine-mRNA status risk score model, six-lncRNA methylation risk score model, and six-lncRNA status risk score model, the nine-mRNA methylation risk score model showed superiority for prognosis stratification of ccRCC patients in the training set. The prognostic ability of the nine-mRNA methylation risk score model was validated in the validation set. The nine prognostic mRNAs were functionally associated with neuroactive ligand receptor interaction and inflammation-related pathways. Conclusion. The nine-mRNA methylation signature (DMRTA2, DRGX, FAM167A, FGGY, FOXI2, KRTAP2-1, TCTEX1D1, TTBK1, and UBE2QL1) may be a useful prognostic biomarker and tool for ccRCC patients. The present results would be helpful to elucidate the possible pathogenesis of ccRCC.

Length of Stay (LOS) is an important performance metric in Australian Emergency Departments (EDs). Recent evidence suggests that an LOS in excess of 4 h may be associated with increased mortality, but despite this, the average LOS continues to remain greater than 4 h in many EDs. Previous studies have found that Data Mining (DM) can be used to help hospitals to manage this metric and there is continued research into identifying factors that cause delays in ED LOS. Despite this, there is still a lack of specific research into how DM could use these factors to manage ED LOS. This study adds to the emerging literature and offers evidence that it is possible to predict delays in ED LOS to offer Clinical Decision Support (CDS) by using DM. Sixteen potentially relevant factors that impact ED LOS were identified through a literature survey and subsequently used as predictors to create six Data Mining Models (DMMs). An extract based on the Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD) was used to obtain relevant patient details and the DMMs were implemented using the Weka Software. The DMMs implemented in this study were successful in identifying the factors that were most likely to cause ED LOS > 4 h and also identify their correlation. These DMMs can be used by hospitals, not only to identify risk factors in their EDs that could lead to ED LOS > 4 h, but also to monitor these factors over time.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how emerging and developed market multinationals (EMMs and DMMs) differ in their acquisition behavior (vis-à-vis the choice of partial versus full acquisitions) when entering a developed market economy, Japan. We hypothesize that EMMs prefer partial acquisitions, whereas DMMs prefer full acquisitions due to what we call the country-of-origin effect. Additionally, we hypothesize that this country-of-origin effect is more pronounced for smaller firms. The results, based upon 224 strategic cross-border acquisitions in Japan, support these two hypotheses. This study contributes to the literature on EMMs.

In this paper, the micro-phasor measurement system is developed to support phasor identification of distribution transformers for the distribution mapping management system (DMMS) of Taiwan Power Company (TPC). The one pulse per second signal (1PPS) from the global positioning system (GPS) is used to synchronize the voltage sampling between reference and measurement sides. By receiving 1PPS from GPS, the phasor measurement of three-phase voltage at the reference site of the substation is stored in the master station with a time-stamp. This paper proposes a timing synchronous module with an embedded temperature compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) to generate highly accurate timing for field measurement of underground distribution facilities. Mobile communication network is used to compare measurement results between reference and field sides of voltage angle that define distribution transformer phasor. This paper also designs and develops an application for mobile devices by importing DMMS database, which is used to search the attributes of the distribution transformers for measurement at the field. After the transformer phasor is identified, the results are stored in the mobile device to update the attributes of distribution transformers in DMMS.

The emerging cost-effective depth sensors have facilitated the action recognition task significantly. In this paper, the authors address the action recognition problem using depth video sequences combining three discriminative features. More specifically, the authors generate three Depth Motion Maps (DMMs) over the entire video sequence corresponding to the front, side, and top projection views. Contourlet-based Histogram of Oriented Gradients (CT-HOG), Local Binary Patterns (LBP), and Edge Oriented Histograms (EOH) are then computed from the DMMs. To merge these features, the authors consider decision-level fusion, where a soft decision-fusion rule, Logarithmic Opinion Pool (LOGP), is used to combine the classification outcomes from multiple classifiers each with an individual set of features. Experimental results on two datasets reveal that the fusion scheme achieves superior action recognition performance over the situations when using each feature individually.

Five volatile organic compounds were identified throughout 1991 in the hypolimnion of Organic Lake. These were dimethylsulphide (DMS), dimethyldisulphide (DM2S), dimethyltrisulphide (DM3S), dimethyltetrasulphide (DM4S) and phenol. The concentration of these compounds increased with lake depth. The concentration of DMS and DM2S was higher in the sediment than in the water column. Carbon disulphide occurred only in the sediment. DMS was the only volatile organic compound detected in the epilimnion of the lake, where its concentration increased from winter onwards. The source of DMS was not dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP). This was determined by hydroxylation of the sample with NaOH. There was no change in the concentration of DMS but the concentration of DM2S increased dramatically while the concentrations of DM3S and DM4S decreased concomitantly. This has important implications in the estimation of DMS derived from DMSP by hydroxylation when organic polysulphides are also present. The stability of the hypolimnion of Organic Lake was reflected by the lack of change in temperature, density, redox potential and the relatively constant concentration of volatile organic compounds throughout the year. Potential sources of the volatile organic compounds are discussed in relation to the isolated nature of the lake.

Human action recognition is an important recent challenging task. Projecting depth images onto three depth motion maps (DMMs) and extracting deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) features are discriminant descriptor features to characterize the spatiotemporal information of a specific action from a sequence of depth images. In this paper, a unified improved collaborative representation framework is proposed in which the probability that a test sample belongs to the collaborative subspace of all classes can be well defined and calculated. The improved collaborative representation classifier (ICRC) based on l2-regularized for human action recognition is presented to maximize the likelihood that a test sample belongs to each class, then theoretical investigation into ICRC shows that it obtains a final classification by computing the likelihood for each class. Coupled with the DMMs and DCNN features, experiments on depth image-based action recognition, including MSRAction3D and MSRGesture3D datasets, demonstrate that the proposed approach successfully using a distance-based representation classifier achieves superior performance over the state-of-the-art methods, including SRC, CRC, and SVM.

This retrospective cohort study compares the virtual planned and postoperative jaw positions in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. Surgery was virtually planned with the Digital Münster Model Surgery system (DMMS). Primary outcome: Spatial difference in the maxillo-mandibulo relation between virtual planning and postoperative result. Secondary outcome: Possible relationship between the measured differences and surgical movements as well as the postoperative stability according to Proffit. Ninety female and sixty-one male patients were included in the study. The average translation errors were 0.54 ± 0.50 mm (anteroposterior), 0.37 ± 0.33 mm (mediolateral), and 0.33 ± 0.28 mm (superoinferior). Orientation errors were 0.86 ± 0.79 degrees (yaw), 0.54 ± 0.48 degrees (roll), and 0.90 ± 0.72 degrees (pitch). The surgical procedures do not differ with respect to their error sizes. Maxilla forward and class II maxilla up with mandible forward are the most precise procedures. Most significant differences were found in the anteroposterior direction, whereby the extent of the surgical movement has no effect on the magnitude of the error. The process of planning with the DMMS followed by surgery is highly accurate and shows error values well below the clinically accepted limit of two millimeters in translation and four degrees in rotation.

Human action recognition (HAR) is an important yet challenging task. This paper presents a novel method. First, fuzzy weight functions are used in computations of depth motion maps (DMMs). Multiple length motion information is also used. These features are referred to as fuzzy weighted multi-resolution DMMs (FWMDMMs). This formulation allows for various aspects of individual actions to be emphasized. It also helps to characterise the importance of the temporal dimension. This is important to help overcome, e.g., variations in time over which a single type of action might be performed. A deep convolutional neural network (CNN) motion model is created and trained to extract discriminative and compact features. Transfer learning is also used to extract spatial information from RGB and depth data using the AlexNet network. Different late fusion techniques are then investigated to fuse the deep motion model with the spatial network. The result is a spatial temporal HAR model. The developed approach is capable of recognising both human action and human–object interaction. Three public domain datasets are used to evaluate the proposed solution. The experimental results demonstrate the robustness of this approach compared with state-of-the art algorithms.

Recent approaches to time series forecasting, especially forecasting spatiotemporal sequences, have leveraged the approximation power of deep neural networks to model the complexity of such sequences, specifically approaches that are based on recurrent neural networks. Still, as spatiotemporal sequences that arise in the real world are noisy and chaotic, modeling approaches that utilize probabilistic temporal models, such as deep Markov models (DMMs), are favorable because of their ability to model uncertainty, increasing their robustness to noise. However, approaches based on DMMs do not maintain the spatial characteristics of spatiotemporal sequences, with most of the approaches converting the observed input into 1D data halfway through the model. To solve this, we propose a model that retains the spatial aspect of the target sequence with a DMM that consists of 2D convolutional neural networks. We then show the robustness of our method to data with large variance compared with naive forecast, vanilla DMM, and convolutional long short-term memory (LSTM) using synthetic data, even outperforming the DNN models over a longer forecast period. We also point out the limitations of our model when forecasting real-world precipitation data and the possible future work that can be done to address these limitations, along with additional future research potential.

This article is a review devoted to the theory and practice of the application of power shell elements (PSE) in pneumatic drives (PD). She makes acquaint the reader with the main provisions of the theory of PD, performed on the PSE. The review briefly presents materials on the development of dynamic mathematical models (DMM) of power units (PU) of shell PDs (SPD), based on the use of static characteristics of SPD, an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of PU based on traditional pneumatic cylinders (PC) and PSE is given. The main attention in the review is paid to the solution of the problem of creating PU on PSE with the required quality indicators at the design stage, when it is necessary to take into account the properties of compressed gas. For this, an original methodology for the development of nonlinear DMMs for various typical variants of the midrange is proposed, the basis of which is a number of provisions of the theory of gas dynamics. Without invoking this theory, it is impossible to take into account the properties of compressed gas (compressibility of the working medium, dependence on temperature and gas flow rate in the shell, the nature of the gas expansion processes), and, therefore, to reliably describe the state of unsteady gas processes inside the shell and develop a DMM of the PU, to a sufficient taking into account the mentioned properties. Since the topic of this review is intended mainly for engineers who develop SPD (theoreticians and practitioners), the review also contains materials on the linearization of the found nonlinear DMMs. As a result of linearization, nonlinear DMMs are transformed into transfer functions for displacement of the output coordinate and effort. The correctness of the linearization carried out is confirmed by the results of experiments. The review briefly discusses several options for pneumatic supply systems for SPD. Here, of particular interest for a specialist is the material on imparting invariance properties to SPDs to air intake from the atmosphere and discharge of exhaust air into the atmosphere, which significantly expands the scope of SPDs and reduce their cost.

The main attention in the review is paid to the solution of the problem of creating PU on PSE with the required quality indicators at the design stage, when it is necessary to take into account the properties of compressed gas. For this, an original methodology for the development of nonlinear DMMs for various typical variants of the midrange is proposed, the basis of which is a number of provisions of the theory of gas dynamics. Without invoking this theory, it is impossible to ta into account the properties of compressed gas (compressibility of the working medium, dependence on temperature and gas flow rate in the shell, the nature of the gas expansion processes), and, therefore, to reliably describe the state of unsteady gas processes inside the shell and develop a DMM of the PU, to a sufficient taking into account the mentioned properties. Since the topic of this review is intended mainly for engineers who develop SPD (theoreticians and practitioners), the review also contains materials on the linearization of the found nonlinear DMMs. As a result of linearization, nonlinear DMMs are transformed into transfer functions for displacement of the output coordinate and effort. The correctness of the linearization carried out is confirmed by the results of experiments. The review briefly discusses several options for pneumatic supply systems for SPD. Here, of particular interest for a specialist is the material on imparting invariance properties to SPDs to air intake from the atmosphere nd discharge of exhaust air into the atmosphere, which significantly expands the scope of SPDs and reduce their cost.

With the advent of cost-efficient depth cameras, many effective feature descriptors have been proposed for action recognition from depth sequences. However, most of them are based on single feature and thus unable to extract the action information comprehensively, e.g., some kinds of feature descriptors can represent the area where the motion occurs while they lack the ability of describing the order in which the action is performed. In this paper, a new feature representation scheme combining different feature descriptors is proposed to capture various aspects of action cues simultaneously. First of all, a depth sequence is divided into a series of sub-sequences using motion energy based spatial-temporal pyramid. For each sub-sequence, on the one hand, the depth motion maps (DMMs) based completed local binary pattern (CLBP) descriptors are calculated through a patch-based strategy. On the other hand, each sub-sequence is partitioned into spatial grids and the polynormals descriptors are obtained for each of the grid sequences. Then, the sparse representation vectors of the DMMs based CLBP and the polynormals are calculated separately. After pooling, the ultimate representation vector of the sample is generated as the input of the classifier. Finally, two different fusion strategies are applied to conduct fusion. Through extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets, the performance of the proposed method is proved better than that of each single feature based recognition method.

Environmental contextDimethyl polysulfides are malodorous compounds formed from decomposing algal matter. The decomposition of dimethylpolysulfides with 3–5 sulfur atoms was studied in aqueous solution under dark, oxygenated conditions and compared with observations of natural systems. The half-lives of dimethyl tri- and tetrasulfides are very long (176–100000 years), while the half-life of dimethyl pentasulfide (<2 years) is similar to the observed time of its removal from natural aquatic systems. AbstractThe presence of malodorous dimethyl polysulfides (DMPSs) has been documented in various aquatic systems. In this work, we studied the kinetics and mechanisms of the chemical decomposition of DMPSs with 3–5 sulfur atoms in aqueous solutions in the presence of oxygen and absence of light. DMPSs are shown to undergo reaction with hydroxyl ions, which results in their decomposition. The orders of the decomposition reactions with respect to dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), dimethyl tetrasulfide (DM4S) and dimethyl pentasulfide (DM5S) are 2.0±0.3, 1.7±0.3 and 2.0±0.2, respectively. The reaction orders with respect to OH− are 0.59±0.06, 0.56±0.08 and 0.58±0.11, respectively. The activation energies of these reactions are 170kJmol−1K−1, 114kJmol−1K−1 and 75kJmol−1K−1, respectively. The initial products of the decomposition are Me2Sn−1 and Me2Sn+1 and the apparent final products are elemental sulfur and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). DMDS, which is formed during the decomposition of DMTS, is depleted in 34S (ϵ=−13.2 ‰), while the DM4S is enriched 34S (ϵ=4.7 ‰). A mechanism for the decomposition of DMPSs is proposed based on the results. Under these conditions, half-lives for the decomposition of DMPSs in Lake Kinneret vary from 2 months for DM5S to 100000 years for DMTS. The relatively short time scale of the reported odour episodes indicates that other chemical, photochemical or biological processes are responsible for the decomposition of DMTS and DM4S.

For obvious reasons, models for decision-making under severe uncertainty are austere. Simply put, there is precious little to work with under these conditions. This fact highlights the great importance of utilizing in such cases the ingredients of the mathematical model to the fullest extent, which in turn brings under the spotlight the art of mathematical modeling. In this discussion we examine some of the subtle considerations that are called for in the mathematical modeling of decision-making under severe uncertainty in general, and worst-case analysis in particular. As a case study we discuss the lessons learnt on this front from the Info-Gap experience.

Virtual Prototyping (VP) is a data-driven design process that promotes both knowledge reuse and innovation. High-profile applications in the automotive and aerospace industries have demonstrated its potential to significantly reduce prototype cycles, time to market, and total product cost. This paper addresses VP as a specialized application of Decision-Support Systems, and discusses common requirements for engineering design tools, as well as requirements specific to the design of electronic products, such as mobile phones. Motorola Labs' test bed for VP is introduced in terms of its open, agent-based architecture utilizing Java CORBA. One of the key principles of the VP System is the reuse of expert knowledge across multiple engineering domains. This is highlighted via several use cases, showing that the system can function not only as an Intranet-accessible repository of model services but also as an integral part of decision-making within the native CAD environment.

Polyhedral and nonpolyhedral, convex and nonconvex, translated, and variable cones are used to model different types of preferences. Common mathematical properties of the preferences are discussed. The impact of using these preferences in decision making is emphasized.

Accurate traffic data are the basis for group control of elevators and its performance evaluation by trace driven simulation. The present practice estimates a time series of inter-floor passenger traffic based on commonly available elevator sensor data. The method demands that the sensor data be transformed into sets of passenger input-output data which are consistent in the sense that the transportation preserves the number of passengers. Since observation involves various behavioral assumptions, which may actually be violated, as well as measurement errors, it has been necessary to apply data adjustment procedures to secure the consistency. This paper proposes an alternative algorithm which reconstructs elevator passenger origin-destination tables from inconsistent passenger input-output data sets, thus eliminating the ad hoc data adjustment.

In this paper we consider the problem of scheduling N jobs on a single machine, where the jobs are processed in batches and the processing time of each job is a simple linear increasing function depending on job’s waiting time, which is the time between the start of the processing of the batch to which the job belongs and the start of the processing of the job. Each batch starts from the setup time S. Jobs which are assigned to the batch are being prepared for the processing during time S0 S. After this preparation they are ready to be processed one by one. The non-negative number bi is associated with job i. The processing time of the i-th job is equal to bi(si − (sib + S0)), where sib and si are the starting time of the b-th batch to which the i-th job belongs and the starting time of this job, respectively. The objective is to minimize the completion time of the last job. We show that the problem is NP-hard. After that we present an O(N) time algorithm solving the problem optimally for the case bi = b. We further present an O(N2) time approximation algorithm with a performance guarantee 2.

A modular transfer line designing problem is investigated. The problem is to find the best subset of modules (machining units) from a given set and to assign them to different stations so that technological constraints and cycle upper limit are respected and the line cost is minimal. The investigated lines have a mixed activation mode for the machining units of each station, i.e. the units of each station are arranged into a series of stages such that each stage is composed of several units activated in parallel. A mixed integer program approach is proposed to model and solve the corresponding design problem. Improvements are suggested in order to reduce the model size and speed up the computations.

In the paper we consider a modification of Sharpe’s method used in classical portfolio analysis for optimal portfolio building. The conventional theory assumes there is a linear relationship between asset’s return and market portfolio return, while the influence of all the other factors is not included. We propose not to neglect them any more, but include them into a model. Since the factors in question are often hard to measure or even characterize, we treat them as a disturbances on random variables used by classical Sharpe’s method.The key idea of the paper is the modification of the classical approach by application of the errors-in-variable model. We assume that both independent (market portfolio return) as well as dependent (given asset’s return) variables are randomly distributed values related with each other by linear relationship and we build the model used for parameters’ estimation.To verify the model, we performed an analysis based on archival data from Warsaw Stock Exchange. The results are also included.

The three-machine flowshop scheduling problem to minimize total completion time is studied where setup times are treated as separate from processing times. Setup and processing times of all jobs on all machines are unknown variables before the actual occurrence of these times. The lower and upper bounds for setup and processing times of each job on each machine is the only information that is available. In such a scheduling environment, there may not exist a unique schedule that remains optimal for all possible realizations of setup and processing times. Therefore, it is desired to obtain a set of dominating schedules (which dominate all other schedules) if possible. The objective for such a scheduling environment is to reduce the size of dominating schedule set. We obtain global and local dominance relations for a three-machine flowshop scheduling problem. Furthermore, we illustrate the use of dominance relations by numerical examples and conduct computational experiments on randomly generated problems to measure the effectiveness of the developed dominance relations. The computational experiments show that the developed dominance relations are quite helpful in reducing the size of dominating schedules.

We present the results available in the scientific literature for commonly used models of job processing times and job release dates, i.e., the models in which the job processing time or the job release date is given as a linear or convex function dependent on the amount of the additional resource allotted to the job. The scheduling models with resource dependent processing times or resource dependent release dates extend the classical scheduling models to reflect more precisely scheduling problems that appear in real life. Thus, in this paper we present the computational complexity results and solution algorithms that have been developed for this kind of problems.

The paper deals with the problem of optimal configuration of a type of transfer lines which are equipped with transfer machines. Such machines perform operations with standard modular spindle heads which are activated sequentially. All operations assigned to the same spindle head (block of operations) are executed simultaneously by a set of tools fixed at the spindle head. The quantity of machines and spindle heads used to produce a part with the given productivity rate defines the final cost of the transfer line which must be minimized. To minimize this cost, a combinatorial problem of operations assignment to blocks and machines must be solved. The solution must provide a desired productivity (cycle time), it must also satisfy precedence and compatibility constraints. In this paper, we suggest improved versions of FSIC heuristic algorithm in order to help line designers to solve real-scale industrial problems. Results of computational experiments obtained for industrial cases are presented.

This paper presents a computational study to evaluate the impact of coordinating production and distribution planning in a two-level industrial supply chain. Three planning methods are compared. The first emulates the traditional way of planning. The two other coordinate plans of the supplier and of all the buyers according to the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) approach. The monolithic method solves a single model describing the entire optimization problem. The sequential method copies the imperfect VMI practice. All three methods are implemented by means of Mixed Integer Programming models. The results presented prove that the right choice of planning method is very important for overall cost of the supply chain. In contrast to the previous research, it turned out that information sharing without full coordination may even lead to increase in the overall cost. For some companies applying the VMI approach, developing exact models and solving them almost optimally may therefore be very important.

The way enterprise capabilities are used decides about its competitiveness among other ones. In that context modeling aimed at production tasks allocation planning plays a crucial role especially at concurrently executed production orders. The introduced reference model employing constraint programming (CP) paradigm describes both an enterprise and a set of project-like production orders. Moreover, encompassing consumer orders requirements and available production capabilities, the model provides the formal framework allowing one to develop a class of decision support systems aimed at interactive production process planning subject to multiproject environment constraints. In that context our contribution is a knowledge-based and CP-driven approach to resource allocation assuming precise character of decision variables. The conditions sufficient for deadlock avoidance are the main goal. The conditions delivered provide formal framework for developing a task oriented Decision Support Tool for Project Portfolio Prototyping (DST4P, Banaszak 2006). The tool provides a prompt and interactive service to a set of routine queries formulated either in straight or reverse way.

The assignment of workloads to production equipment is one category of planning decision for an electronics assembly factory. In practice, line balancing requires not only selecting machines with sufficient placement accuracy and feeder capacity, but also address- ing a host of other operational objectives and constraints. Motorola Labs led a multi-year effort to apply mathematical programming to balance a variety of production mix and vol- ume scenarios. By representing the optimization problem as a specially structured, mixed linear-integer program, we were able to incorporate a high degree of reality in the model, simultaneously optimizing fixed setups, handling custom parts, maximizing machine uptime, and mitigating secondary bottlenecks. This paper presents the story of how we developed and deployed a software solution that significantly improved assembly cycle times, setup changeovers, and overall factory productivity, saving the company tens of millions of dollars.

A loss function is proposed for solving box-constrained inverse problems. Given causality mechanisms between inputs and outputs as smooth functions, an inverse problem demands to adjust the input levels to make the output levels as close as possible to the target values; box-constrained refers to the requirement that all outcome levels remain within their respective permissible intervals. A feasible solution is assumed known, which is often the status quo. We propose a loss function which avoids activation of the constraints. A practical advantage of this approach over the usual weighted least squares is that permissible outcome intervals are required in place of target importance weights, facilitating data acquisition. The proposed loss function is smooth and strictly convex with closed-form gradient and Hessian, permitting Newton family algorithms. The author has not been able to locate in the literature the Gibbs distribution corresponding to the loss function. The loss function is closely related to the generalized matching law in psychology.

This paper presents new mixed integer programming models for the Proportional Lot-Sizing Problem (PLSP) with set-up times longer than a period. Proposed models explicitly calculate the distribution of times amongst products in periods with a changeover and determine a final period for every set-up operation. Presented results prove that the proposed models are easier to solve using standard MIP methods than already known models.

First, the accuracy of models can improved by using short time buckets, which allow more detailed planning but lead to higher computational effort. Next, valid inequalities make the models tighter but increase their size. Sometimes it is possible to find a good balance between the size and tightness of a model by limiting a priori the number of valid inequalities. Finally, a special normalization of the variables simplifies the presentation of results and validation of models.

The paper discusses the problem of robust buffer allocation for Resource- Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) with predefined milestones, for which execution deadlines have been established. To solve the problem, an algorithm is proposed supporting insertion of unit time buffers, with the simultaneous maximisation of new metrics of arrangement robustness. The presented results of experimental research speak for usability of the solutions proposed. The effectiveness is studied with use of test tasks included in the Project Scheduling Problem Library (PSPLIB) with additionally specified project milestones.

We are given a simple graph G = (V, E). Any edge e ∈ E is a chord in a path P ⊆ G (cycle C ⊆ G) iff a graph obtained by joining e to path P (cycle C) has exactly two vertices of degree 3. A class of graphs without any chord in paths (cycles) we call path-chordless (cycle-chordless). We will prove that recognizing and coloring of these graphs can be done in O(n2) and O(n) time, respectively. Our study was motivated by a wide range of applications of the graph coloring problem in coding theory, time tabling and scheduling, frequency assignment, register allocation and many other areas.

Анотація:
The portfolio selection problem presented in this paper is formulated as a biobjective mixed integer program. The portfolio selection problem considered is based on a dynamic model of investment, in which the investor buys and sells securities in successive investment periods. The problem objective is to dynamically allocate the wealth on different securities to optimize by reference point method the portfolio expected return and the probability that the return is not less than a required level. In computational experiments the dataset of daily quotations from the Warsaw Stock Exchange were used.

Анотація:
This article presents a new simulated annealing algorithm that provides very high quality solutions to the vehicle routing problem. The aim of described algorithm is to solve the vehicle routing problem with time windows. The tests were carried out with use of some well known instances of the problem defined by M. Solomon. The empirical evidence indicates that simulated annealing can be successfully applied to bi-criterion optimization problems.

Assignment Problem (AP), which is well known combinatorial problem, has been studied extensively in the course of many operational and technical researches. It has been shown to be NP-hard for three or more dimensions and a few non-deterministic methods have been proposed to solve it. This paper pays attention on new heuristic search method for the n-dimensional assignment problem, based on swarm intelligence and comparing results with those obtained by other scientists. It indicates possible direction of solutions of problems and presents a way of behaviour using ant algorithm for multidimensional optimization complex systems. Results of researches in the form of computational simulations outcomes are presented.

This paper presents an application of mixed integer programming model for op- timal allocation of workers among supporting services in a hospital. The services include logistics, inventory management, financial management, operations management, medical analysis, etc. The optimality criterion of the problem is to minimize operational costs of supporting services subject to some specific constraints. The constraints represent specific conditions for resource allocation in a hospital. The overall problem is formulated as a triple- objective assignment model, where the decision variables represent the assignment of people to various jobs. A reference point approach with the Chebyshev metric is applied for the problem solution. The results of computational experiments modeled on a real data from a hospital in Lesser Poland are reported.

This paper presents a bi-objective portfolio model with the expected return as a performance measure and the expected worst-case return as a risk measure. The problems are formulated as a bi-objective linear program. Numerical examples based on 1000, 3500 and 4020 historical daily input data from the Warsaw Stock Exchange are presented and selected computational results are provided. The computational experiments prove that the proposed linear programming approach provides the decision maker with a simple tool for evaluating the relationship between the expected and the worst-case portfolio return.

Managing a supply chain for products with a short life cycle, like fashion apparel, high-tech, personal computers, toys, CD’s etc., is challenging for many companies (Fisher and Raman, 1999). Because the life cycles of these products are too short for standard time- series forecasting methods (not longer than one – two years), an important way of overcoming the challenges of managing supply chains for such products is to find appropriate forecasting methodologies. The standard forecasting methods require some historical data, which are often unavailable at the time when the forecasts are being performed for products with a short life cycle (Lin, 2005). The method described in this article allows forecasters to use life cycles of similar, analogous products to arrive at the initial forecasts for the product(s) at hand.
