Abstract This article presents preliminary research findings on the history of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and maker culture in Germany. It aims to identify historical, political, economic and societal shifts that have led to the existence of approximately 1000 makerspaces of various kinds in Germany today. The article summarises the beginnings of DIY in the 20th century in West Germany and East Germany. It focuses on how infrastructures supporting DIY were created out of necessity and economic considerations, how tools and spaces were offered as public service, the influence of counterculture movements and expression of political views through DIY and finally the use of DIY as a meaningful way to spend newfound leisure time and the phenomenon of state-funded vocational educational spaces. It aims to inspire further research elucidating the connections between broader societal contexts and DIY throughout the past century and its effects on maker culture today.

Batik as an Indonesian culture has many relations towards Indonesian traditions. Its long production process has created stigma and the youths' disinterest in batik. DIY (Do It Yourself) batik products can be the answer on how to educate and attract youths' interest in Batik Indonesia. DIY batik products are innovative and must be created to pass down batik culture to youths. Through Basajiwa and its batik DIY products, youths will be able to recognize and engage in batik culture. Motifs such as Parang Rusak, Parang Centhung, Semen Ageng Sawat Gurdha, and Kawung Sen/Beton are designed to represent some Indonesian batik motifs. The existence of DIY batik products and Basajiwa are further investigated by means of descriptive qualitative analysis research and SWOT Method. Outputs consist of facts about some Indonesian batik motifs, brand analysis of Basajiwa as DIY batik brand, and effects of DIY batik on youths. It is concluded that Basajiwa and its DIY batik products are able to be the correct solution to generate interest of youths towards batik Indonesia because it becomes a self-healing activity and to de-stress for a while.

Abstract This paper is a conversation-based reflection on hacker-, maker- and DIY-culture. It focuses on the unique cultural and socio-economic setting of Hong Kong, using Dim Sum Labs, its first hacker/makerspace as its primary subject of investigation. To provide context, we begin with an outline of the cultural, economic and physical challenges presented by Hong Kong. We then proceed to present and relay conversation pieces from interviews with members and non-members of Dim Sum Labs, who speak about their respective perspectives on notions of “hacking,” “making” and “DIY-culture.” Finally, we provide some reflections on our own experiences as members of the hacker/maker/ DIY-culture and past directors of Dim Sum Labs.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the coaches work cultural behavior in DIY province in the context of POPNAS 2023 (National Student Sports Week) Indonesia. The importance of this study is to evaluate the trainer's performance during the training periodization. This research uses survey method, its analysis uses quantitative descriptive. The sample of this research is 40 trainers consisting of 15 types of sports, these sports will be competed in the Indonesian POPNAS (National Student Sports Week). The research instrument was a questionnaire in the form of a Google form consisting of 24 statement items. The indicators of the coache work culture behavior are divided into attitudes toward work and behavior on time work. Test the validity of the instrument using Aiken's with a value of 0.898 and Cronbach's Alpha reliability test with a value of 0.791. The results of this study indicate that the cultural behavior of DIY provincial trainers shows the results of "very poor" 4 coaches (10%), "less" 7 coaches (17.5%), "enough" 21 coaches (52.5%), "Good" 6 coaches (15 %), “very good” 2 coaches (5%). Based on the results of research on work behavior, the work culture of DIY coaches is in the dominant category of "enough". Thus it can be an evaluation material for all levels of coaches and sports organizations about the importance of coach awareness and other support including sports institutions so that they pay more attention to coaches. Suggestions from this study so that research can be developed by adding samples or research variables. Because research that examines the work culture of coaches is still a little published.

The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze the obstacles in organizational reform in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The method in this research uses qualitative methods and data analysis uses spiral analysis techniques. The results show that there are several obstacles related to organizational factors, namely: the problem of limited communication between superiors and subordinates, especially the Governor of DIY and the head of the OPD. For the divisional inhibiting factor in the DIY Regional Government in carrying out organizational reforms, the OPD head in responding to ideas from the DIY Governor in some ways is still slow. The functional factor that becomes an obstacle is the implementation of cross-agency government culture that has not run optimally. Keywords: Barriers, Organizational Reform, Culture, DIY.

The tradition of ngelik prayer is one of the traditions of the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, in the Santri Village in Mlangi, Sleman, DIY. This tradition is carried out at the peak of the prophet's birthday celebration which is the 12th of Rabiu'ul Awal at Pathok Negoro Mosque in Mlangi. This research tries to reveal in detail the tradition and try to analyze why this tradition still exists today. This study uses two data collection techniques, namely literature and field studies. The approach used is a qualitative approach with an ethnographic model. This research reveals a brief history of Santri Mlangi Village formed by the initiative of KH. Nur Iman Mlangi, sibling of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. This research also found that the tradition of ngelik prayer is a new culture as a result of a cross between Islamic and Javanese cultures. The celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, is an Islamic culture. While recitation of shalawat using Javanese-style notes is a Javanese tradition. This is inseparable from the influence of the existence of KH. Nur Iman Mlangi who is a royal descendant of the Yogyakarta Palace. This study also revealed that the existence of dozens of pesantren has a big role in maintaining the continuity of the tradition of ngelik prayer. Keywords: Shalawat Ngelik, Mlangi, Pathok Negoro Mosque

The wave of DIY culture and environmental innovation sweeping through the UK is not restricted to isolated sites of high profile protest, such as the Newbury bypass. Based on fieldwork in the South West of England, consisting of in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus groups and a postal survey, we argue that networks such as those around festivals, LETS and organic food box schemes contribute to green milieux, which encourage ecological and cultural innovation of everyday life. We suggest that this creative social and ecological margin may be viewed as extended milieux combining global and local aspects. Local social relations and identities are reconfigured in new reflexive ways that utilize, criticise and even contribute to globalization, while developing new senses of locality and community.

AbstractThrough fragments of narratives gathered from the documentary The Punk Singer, based on the life and career of musician and activist Kathleen Hanna, pioneer of the Riot Grrrl movement, we refer to the third wave of the feminist movement, by demonstrating the dimensions of intersectionality and youth protagonism within her work. Ranging from fanzines, art, collages and lyric-making to performance and music groups based on a punk "do it yourself" (DIY) philosophy, we highlight Hanna's broad contribution to contemporary feminism by challenging an oppressive scenario within the punk movement, and by stimulating the emergence of other feminist, rebel and riot grrrls initiatives. Her artistic practice and performance are analyzed through the bias of DIY and remix cultures, thus potentializing distributions of the sensible and politicities in the engagement of subjectivities that surpass the containment of current imaginaries. Keywords: Feminism. Since the 1970s, the concept of DIY (do-it-yourself) culture has evolved from a bluntly resistant statement of independence from dominant forms of capitalist cultural production and dissemination to a more nuanced expression of creative cultural practice. While such practice remains resistant to more mainstream forms of cultural production and consumption it has at the same time evolved a level of professionalism aimed towards ensuring cultural and, where possible, economic sustainability. In a time where the concept of the cultural industries has become commonplace across many regions of the world and where various attempts are being made to co-opt or suppress forms of cultural production based on their perceived value or threat to the status quo, DIY careers become viable ways in which to mark out and maintain DIY cultural spaces as both ethical and aesthetically meaningful. The articles that make up this special issue consider the contemporary significance of DIY careers with specific reference to young people and music-making practices in a global context.

We are in an era of polarized and pessimistic self-reflection on the state of the internet. As we grapple with the destructive impacts of the modern arrangement of the social web, it's worth remembering that the technology which underpins these giants is more accessible than ever before to those who want to use it to pursue their own ends. We believe that in the hands of thoughtful independent developers the internet stll holds tremendous promise to positively shape our culture at local levels.

In this article, I aim to explore how legitimization and de-radicalization of the underground hip-hop subculture have restrained the DIY creation of social norms and cultural behaviours that mobilized Iranian hip-hop in the early 2000s. The article offers a critical discussion of the literature around legitimization of DIY/underground subcultures, specifically youth musical subcultures such as punk and hip-hop, before turning to an analysis of Iranian hip-hop culture in three phases: (1) hip-hop and the creation of a community, 2000–2003; (2) the golden age of Iranian hip-hop, 2003–2009; (3) contemporary Iranian hip-hop, 2009–2016. The article suggests that these three phases have finally led to the entry of hip-hop into the mainstream system and cultural industry, as recent trends bringing it in line with the values and standards of Islamic Iran result in turning underground DIY culture into a mainstream popular form of music supported and funded (indirectly) by the Islamic state.

Background. X e growing interest in the historical development of social systems requires an assessment of the possibilities for a quantitative comparison of psychological characteristics in a person and society of diY erent eras. Objective.X e study aims to reveal the structure of social values and features of contemporary images according to verbal and visual texts of the cultures in the past.Methods. Behavior characteristics describing G. Hofstede’s basic cultural dimensions (Hofstede, 1980) were used to encode texts. Psychosemantic assessment of the works of art perception was carried out with the use of a scale based on the multifaceted Five Factor Model of personality by P. Costa, R. McCrae (FFM; NEO-PI-R questionnaire adapted by V.E. Orel et al.) and the scale of individual image perception in media communication by L.V. Matveeva et al. Sample. A) Ancient Greek and Roman texts of 7th c. BC — 4th c. AD, Old Russian texts of 11th–17th centuries, Byzantine texts of 5th–15th centuries and texts of medieval European culture according to the 17th c.— a total of 205 separate texts. B) Visual stimulus material on cultures: Ancient Greece (7th–1th c. BC); Ancient Rome (7th c. BC — 4th c. AD); Byzantium (5th–15th cc.); Russia (11–19 cc.); Europe (9th, 11th–17th cc.) was assessed by respondents of diY erent ages from 14 to 70 (N = 68). Results. Reliability analysis and confirmatory factor analysis generally supported the structure of the W ve-factor model of personality and the basic dimensions of culture by G. Hofstede on the material of historical texts and works of art. X e least stable dimensions are Hofstede’s Masculinity and Openness to Experience factors of the personality model. An exploratory factorial analysis of data on historical texts yielded a factor structure reZ ecting speciW c aspects of Hofstede’s dimensions. In general, the correlations between personality traits and basic cultural dimensions described by G. Hofstede and R. McCraе (Хофстеде, МакКрэй, 2010) are reproduced. X e diY erences mainly relate to the FFM factor “Extraversion”. X e features of social situations described in historical narratives that are not W xed by the characteristics of behavior that describe the basic dimensions of culture according to Hofstede are discussed. Conclusion. X e subdimensions of modern models of personality and cultural values make it possible to obtain a fairly adequate quantitative assessment of the cultures of the past.

Abstract Producing objects for one’s own consumption is a major strand in the historical development of material culture. Making things with one’s own hands can be considered a natural means to satisfy human needs. In the present time, this form of production is covered by the term “do-it-yourself” (DIY). DIY has become a global social phenomenon, especially thanks to the opportunities enabled by the Internet. Websites provide a lively forum for discussion, sharing ideas, how-to guides, and galleries of the results of DIY projects. The present work addresses home improvement DIY projects carried out by individuals in Slovakia. The aim is to outline the background, motivation and inspiration of so called do-it-yourselfers, the DIY process and participants’ evaluation of their work. DIY is generally considered to be an activity for amateurs, which is to say people who engage in the activity in their free time, as opposed to professionals, who perform such activity as their job or to earn a living. Moreover, the paper also partly focuses on the relationship between amateurs and professionals which has shown to be the basic principle of current DIY home improvements. One of significant findings of the research showed that the individual experience of craftsmanship or craftwork and the individual need for self-expression appear to be important parts of the DIY experience. Research findings contribute to a better understanding of DIY production in the context of design as an academic discipline. The main research method used was a questionnaire titled “DIY home improvement”, which was drawn up on the model of prior research abroad.

This research aims to empower disabled makers and engineers to participate in collaborative engineering activities. First, this research identifies barriers to and benefits of applying makerspace culture precepts to the creation of DIY Assistive Technologies (DIY-AT). From this data, we will be developing a hybrid online and in-person community for supporting DIY-AT makers. Simultaneously, this research aims to identify the basic structure and vocabulary of human haptic communication. From that data, we will design an anthropomorphic human-robot interaction for assistive technologies, using the haptic channel to facilitate fluid assistive interactions. Together, these become a program of research that will support disabled makers and engineering students in collaborating with diverse teams of other creators with improved situational awareness and collaboration.

This article employs cross-cultural communication approaches to teaching instructional design in the times of COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on instructions from France, India, Spain, and the United States for making protective masks, the authors highlight how the writers and designers of these four documents from each culture approach their audiences, organize their DIY instructions, make language choices, employ images and other illustration devices, and culturally persuade users. While acknowledging cultural differences, the authors urge students to identify and adopt design strengths from diverse cultures in their own ideas about composing instructions.

This study reports on an empirically underdocumented practice in contemporary aesthetic enhancement culture, the self-injection of unregulated DIY Botox and dermal filler kits purchased online. Data were collected from 4 online discussion forums containing disclosures in relation to use of DIY kits and analyzed using ethnographic content analysis. Motivation to source DIY Botox and dermal fillers online was grounded in desire to avoid financial cost of professional services and a lack of confidence in practitioners. Future intentions to order online raw materials and “formulas” to prepare dermal fillers at home were expressed. Individuals taught themselves to inject through watching YouTube tutorials and downloading Botox injection maps from the Internet. Although individuals demonstrated awareness of the health risks involved with self-injection of unregulated products, this was not a deterrent. Future research is warranted to document the injecting practices and health outcomes of individuals who inject DIY Botox and dermal filler kits to inform targeted harm reduction interventions by health-care practitioners.

Deindustrialization of regions, especially traditional industrial ones, caused by the destruction of enterprises, infrastructure facilities, relocation of businesses to safer regions of the country significantly reduces the economic potential, creating obstacles to ensuring a decent standard of living in wartime and post-war recovery. New challenges and threats form the demand for finding ways to ensure a resilient economy, which in a broad sense means the system's ability to cope with adverse shocks and recover from them. Within the framework of evolutionary economic geography, it is emphasized the need, along with traditional innovative actors, such as firms, research organizations, and state bodies, to distinguish new participants in innovative activity, in particular – citizens, who are able to play a significant role in the development, application, and scaling of innovative solutions of local problems. The article proposes to pay attention to capabilities of the modern «Do-it-yourself» activity format – DIY 4.0 or Third Wave DIY – as a potential for ensuring the economic resilience of the regions of Ukraine. DIY 4.0/Third Wave DIY relies on the functionality of the interactive and social Internet Web 2.0, digital design and additive manufacturing, which allows common people to invent, design, produce and sell the goods they create. The new advantages significantly expand opportunities of regional actors for prosumption, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are important components of the recovery of economic activity, the development of human capital and the growth of the economy based on the internal potential of the territories. The author identified the directions of stimulation of the DIY culture among population by local authorities and expressed an opinion about possible complications in the practical implementation of the proposed approach, primarily due to the lack of functional literacy of population, problems with access to equipment and resources for financing DIY activities. It is proposed to consider the expediency of including projects to create conditions for the development of DIY culture in the post-war reconstruction programs of regions, which does not exclude widespread support for this movement at the state level. The abovementioned may be related to further research.

Various problems due to meetings between two or more cultures such as shock culture, cultural assimilation, and cross culture are considered to be problems of the diaspor community until now. The question is, is this problem also experienced by the Batak Toba’s diaspor, which incidentally is considered a tribe that is very loyal to the customs of their ancestral heritage? Then, how their efforts to maintain the sustainability of traditional marriages? To answer this question, a study was conducted on 8 (eight) Batak Toba’s diaspor in Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). The main findings in the study raised from descriptive research with a qualitative approach include: love of the Batak’s custom and the existence of social sanctions encourage the Batak Toba’s diaspor to hold tight to the tradition up to now, it encourages them to try to instill customary valuesand principles, provide direct practical learning to naposo, held traditional seminars, persuaded to directly deal with each marriage, and actively involved in their respective pockets so that their traditional marriages would be preserved. However, in this effort there are still some obstacles, one of which is the indifference of naposo in the management of the HKBP Church. This study recommends the need to allocate a portion of HKBP Church funds to provide guidance by providing free housing for naposo who migrate to DIY.

The realization of a study on commercial DIY and the involvement of Arab women in the cultivation of okra in the city of Dabanga, in the department of Logone and Chari in Cameroon makes it possible to characterize this production in this precarious environment. The objective of this article is to study the mode of production and marketing of okra cultivation by the Arab women of Dabanga, the challenges and the prospects they face to get out of this commercial tinkering. Surveys and observations show that more than half of the households in the city of Dabanga practice agriculture for family self-consumption or the sale intervenes to fill certain deficits of other products. Okra cultivation occupies two women out of three during the rainy season and one woman out of two during the dry season in the commune of Dabanga. Cultivated in a traditional and anarchic way, okra can be found in the markets of surrounding towns such as Maltam, Goulfé, Doublé, Kousseri and in those of neighboring countries such as Ndjamena in Chad.

This article traces the evolution of punk’s do it yourself (DIY) ethos from an emphasis on individualist-contrarian to collectivist-participatory forms following its initial commercial period (c. 1977–80). The focus is on 1980s American hardcore as locus of shifts in music content, media production and distribution, and venue infrastructure, which together developed and ultimately linked local punk scenes into a national and international network. The article identifies ‘punk comradeship’ as the mechanism of social enculturation that reorients punk into an inclusionary, activist endeavour working in its own interests rather than those of the culture industry. The contemporary relevance of punk’s commitment to institution building is considered in the context of increasing dominance of biopolitics and reformatting of the DIY ethos as the entrepreneurial curation of individual selves.

The emergence of ‘trans’ as a social and political movement and identity has created the conditions for the creation of a new music scene, organized around the gender(ed) identities of those involved rather than around musical genre. This article examines the parallels between the attitude taken towards gender(ed) identity and the organization of events in the United Kingdom’s trans music scene. Both entail de/construction through strategies of ‘genre evasion’ (Steinholt, 2012) and ‘cut-and-paste’ (Bornstein, 1994). This de/constructive process crosses boundaries and opens possibilities, enabling new modes of organization alongside new ways of understanding culture and identity.

Post-pandemic, France is promoting new ways of inhabiting domestic space by learning from COVID. However, certain models have emerged from a slower transformation. We examine how do-it-yourself (DIY) work may indicate paradigm changes in French society. This essay describes the characteristics and changes in DIY across time in France based on the momentum created by social sciences in the 1970s. It explains how DIY is able to generate changes in people's behaviour and thus offers possible new models for economy and production. However, to play a role in both twenty-first century housing and the contemporary city, action taken on the matter must be spatially legitimised. Therefore, the historical role of homo faber and his workshop in constructing la cite is discussed. Workshops allow the transgression of current material culture led by the ideas of abundance and accumulation. Thus, DIY is viewed as a way of being in the world that allows the construction of new economic and productive models during an era of ecological transition.

Disclosure of information becomes an important part of governance to create good governance or good governance. One of the efforts of the DIY regional government to realize good governance is through transparent information disclosure. The website jogjaprov.go.id managed by the public relations government of DIY never got the most innovative service website in the year 2019 and the first ranking award of Best smart Governance. Public relations of DIY regional government use the website as one of the information media to implement e-government so that people can access and know the information quickly. As for the management of the website, the public relations of DIY regional Government conducted several stages as follows: searching and collecting content, editing, verification and publication on the website jogjaprov.go.id. Content on the jogjaprov.go.id also has several categories, including infrastructure, economics, society, culture, health, education and tourism. This research aimed to analyze the management of jogjaprov.go.id website in realizing the governance of the special region of Yogyakarta in 2019. This study describes the process of accountability of DIY special funds in realizing the prosperity of DIY society 2013-2017. Special Region of Yogyakarta is one of the regions that get the special policy in the form of asymmetric decentralization. This policy is effective since the enactment of Law Number 13 the Year 2012 on the Specialties of DIY. In particular, this regulation regulates 5 privileged affairs: the procedures for filling the positions, positions, duties and authorities of the Governor and Vice Governor, the regional government of DIY, the affairs of culture, the land affairs and spatial affairs. The hope that decentralization policy in Indonesia can improve the people's welfare significantly has not been fulfilled. This is like what happened in Yogyakarta Special Region which has special authority to manage its government affairs. However, these expectations still cannot be met well. This study aims to analyze the accountability model for the utilization of DIY privileged funds so as to provide policy recommendations to be taken. This research uses the qualitative method with data collection method with in-depth interview technique, elite interview, and documentation. The results showed that the poverty rate in DIY until March 2017 about 488.53 thousand people or about 13.02% and Ratio Gini DIY by 0.425%. This is not worth the number of privileged funds that increase each year. It is, therefore, necessary in the determination of success indicators of achievement and output in accordance with the output and outcome to be achieved. In addition, the accountability process also includes not only technical in report submission but also ensuring that process and involving the community in the planning process until accountability.

Analyzing a Ford Motor Company advertisement that nods to a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) subculture, this essay explores how the “handmade” gets valued and defined in the context of mass culture. I offer a reading of the advertisement in the context of contemporary marketing trends to consider how ideas of mass culture, counterculture, and traditional culture shape ideas of fabricated objects. The idea of the factory-produced Ford is not in contrast to the handcrafted object as much as it is in dialogue. How do we categorize and value certain modes of production over others to construct our understandings of cultural identities – national, community, and individual?
