Marriage is one of the oldest institutions of mankind. It is the coming together of a man and woman for the purpose of procreation and society. In our society marriage is a social institution in which a male individual marries a female individual, provided both have attained their respective adulthood as specified by the law of the state. Although the definition of marriage varies with culture it can, in a nutshell, be defined as a social union or legal contract between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between the two of them, between them and their children and between them and their in-laws. It therefore falls within the ambit of those who are specifically trained in psycho-socio counselling to minimise the damaging consequences of a failed marriage.

Currently, parental separation in South Africa affects an estimated 30 000 children under the age of 18 annually. These children spend a great part of their day at school where they have to interact with peers and teachers and are expected to perform academically, but parental separation could have a significant impact on their ability to do so. Although research has found that children can be adversely affected by parental divorce, schools in South Africa do not offer any group interventions in an attempt to assist and guide children through what could be an ordeal for them. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the school-based Children of Divorce Intervention Programme (CODIP) at two South African schools. CODIP is a preventively oriented 12-week group programme for nine to twelve year old children. The aims of the programme are to create a supportive group atmosphere in which children can share divorce-related feelings and clarify misconceptions about divorce. Participants are also taught problem-solving, communication and anger management skills. Twenty-five boys of divorce from two schools (ages 10 to 13 years) were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one delayed intervention control group. The boys' understanding of divorce was assessed through the completion of the Children's Belief about Parental Separation (CBAPS) scale. The Self Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) was used to assess children's perceptions of themselves, while the Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire for Children (PACHIQ-R-CH) was employed to determine the boys' perceptions of their families. Questionnaires to determine the boys' general adjustment were completed by the boys, teachers and parents. Boys completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), teachers the Teacher-Child Rating Scale (T-CRS), the AML-R Behaviour Rating Scale and the SDQ, and parents completed the Parent-Child Rating Scale (P-CRS) and the SDQ.

The main objective of this research was to reflect upon the communication standards of former spouses in divorce and in litigation. The theoretical framework was that of social constructionism. The focus of the methodological approach was centered on the analysis of discoursive practices. Due to this, the specific objectives presuppose the understanding of the implications of direct communication between former spouses in dispute and the comprehension of the social representations that they express by means of dialogue in relation to divorce proceedings and child custody. So that, the communication affects and is affected by the litigation. The field of this empirical research was the project Families’ Educative Justice developed by the Psychological Clinics of PUC-GO. The individuals who took part of the subproject were chosen by means of randomical way: former spouses whose age varied from 30 to 50 years old, with sons and daughters from five to 20 years old. Besides this researcher, a group of educators was composed by professors, psychologists and post-graduated students. During six meetings, the data which were collected by this researcher revealed the social phenomenum of communication between former couples when it was occurring. With the participants’ agreement, these sessions were recorded by audio broadcasting and fully transcribed in order to register the data of this research. The conclusions were that the divorce, within the marital context, is influenced by various marital ways of living, as well as the past experiences of the former couple before the divorce and the infinity of economic, social and cultural circumstances.

Listening to music is an activity that provides a range of physical and psychological benefits (e.g., tension relief, decreased depression) for people across cultures and age groups. Adolescents, specifically, are among the most active consumers of music, and music appears to be a natural coping strategy for this age group. Research suggests that both music and the family context play important roles during the developmental phase of adolescence. Family transitions such as divorce have become increasingly common experiences for adolescents and may have long-lasting negative effects on an adolescent’s emotional well-being. However, research regarding music-based interventions for use with adolescents experiencing family conflicts or transitions is limited. Thus, this project involved the creation of a resource manual designed to help mental health professionals implement music-based interventions in their work with adolescents coping with family conflict or parental divorce. The development of the manual was informed by a review of the literature about music therapy, adolescents, and families, as well as by questionnaires completed by three certified music therapists, and this author’s own clinical experiences. The data was then integrated and synthesized into a comprehensive resource manual, which was evaluated by three clinicians who are not trained music therapists for its efficacy, relevance, and user-friendliness. Feedback for the manual was collected via an evaluation form. Results indicated that the manual may be a useful supplemental tool for mental health professionals. Strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

The present research project deals with group interventions for children having separated parents. Its aim is a methodological reflection about the programs analyzed and studied in the literature in order to later deepen some aspects of the Italian intervention Gruppi di Parola. The organization in three qualitative studies has allowed the researcher to approach the research object according to different perspectives and methodologies. The first study corresponds to a Systematic Narrative Review, carried out in order to systematize the international literature about the group interventions for children having separated parents which have been analyzed through a rigorous research design. The other studies respectively deepen two aspects of the intervention Gruppi di Parola: the theoretical and practical underpinnings through a focused ethnographic perspective (second study) and the interactive dynamics activated during a specific ritual phase of the process (welcoming) by means of a complex observational methodology (third study).

South African society has been plagued by traumatic events that have influenced many people including children. Within a systemic context children are impacted upon by various micro-systems within which they find themselves, for example, the family, the school and church amongst others, as well as the macro-system of society as a whole. Divorce is such a personal yet extremely traumatic experience especially when there are children involved. Research shows that the effects of divorce are often felt for many years later. This research study was approached from a qualitative perspective examining the impact of divorce on children in different developmental stages. It highlights ways in which children could be assisted during the crisis of divorce and explores protective factors that would facilitate post-divorce adjustment. The study included short-term therapeutic intervention with six children attending two schools in the Western Cape. By it’s very essence this study allows one to offer guidance to schools and parents with regard to emotional support for learners who have been through similar experiences.

The general aim of the study was to develop and evaluate a group intervention programme for adolescents of divorce. The holistic perspective that formed the basis for the group intervention ensured attention to all relevant interacting modalities. The study included a separate, but parallel group programme for custodial parents, aimed at providing relevant information and teaching coping skills. The effect of the programme on emotional adjustment, depression, locus of control and children's beliefs about parental divorce was investigated empirically. Themes that dominated discussions during the adolescent group sessions were identified by qualitative measures. The overall value of the programme as experienced by participants was assessed. The results revealed that the group of adolescents who received intervention without parental involvement in the parent programme, improved significantly from pre to post intervention on the variables locus of control and emotional adjustment. A notable decrease in symptoms of depression was observed. The subjects whose parents participated in the parental intervention benefited less by.the program~e and did not improve significantly on any of the measures. Major themes that emerged from the qualitative study were all associated with post divorce life. Themes identified include: losing out on childhood and family life; continuous parental conflict; feelings of responsibility about the welfare of parents; ambivalent feelings towards the father; difficulties in accepting new partners of their parents and uncertainty regarding future relationships. It is the conclusion of the researcher that an holistic group intervention programme as conducted in this study can contribute towards positive change in adolescents after parental divorce. It is recommended that adolescents should attend group intervention without parental involvement.

This thesis, integrated into the Master of Forensic Psychology and Social Exclusion, has as main objective analyze the resulting consequences of a divorce, of a disruption of parenting, focusing on an exploratory study to existing studies. More and more we are witnessing an enormous diversity of family structures and an increase in the number of divorces / separations; becoming therefore important to know the development of children as well as their feeling towards the situation. It’s necessary to clarify the capabilities and strategies that parents and children used to handle situations of rupture, the family rupture isn’t always well accepted which can lead to psychological and emotional imbalance. The concept of family is in constant construction and the separation and divorce are increasingly present in our society raising questions about family and parenting.

Interparental conflicts arising from marital separation are a cause of maladjustment in the family life, both for the adults involved and for their children, with serious consequences that persist in time, in many cases. Timely and appropriate intervention can avoid its prolongation and generate conditions for cooperative co-parenting with both parents involved, interacting with each other to promote the well-being and development, without conflict, thus increasing the perception of safety and adjustment. In Portugal, this intervention is ensured by the Family Meeting Points that have been in operation for about two years. This qualitative and exploratory study intends to analyze the professionals’ perception about the characteristics, effectiveness of their practice and reflections on the same in order to improve an intervention that is fundamental since it is the only one mandated judicially in Portugal. Seventeen technicians, from Family Meeting Points, from diverse backgrounds, aged between 26 and 50, participated in the study through participation in two focus groups and nine individual interviews. The data were analyzed through the procedures of the Thematic Analysis, using Nvivo software. The results show that, although much has been done in these two years and that professionals are aware of the importance of their role, there is much that can be improved to make the intervention more effective. Implications for practice, as well as for future research, are presented, based on the reflection on the limitations of the study.

High-conflict divorce is a major social, economic, and public health problem. It is also one of the most significant predictors of maladjustment among parents, children and families. The legal and mental health systems are burdened with the needs and demands placed by high-conflict families. The traditional intervention models and mechanisms seems to be ineffective, insufficient and even counterproductive in this context The adversarial environment, not restorative or therapeutic, dominates the paradigm of current legal and psychosocial interventions, not helping its resolution even adding to the problem. This practice-oriented research aims to respond to the multisystemic dysfunctions of these families, reducing the associated human, social and economic costs. This thesis is structured in five chapters: two conceptual and three empirical studies. Chapter 1 summarizes the available empirical evidence on the phenomenon of child's visitation resistance and refusal, recommending ecological-systemic practices of conceptualization, evaluation and intervention in these cases of high-conflict. Chapter 2 is about the manualization of a novel intervention – For2Parents Program - in its three modalities and formats: Individual Motivational Interviewing Counselling; Psychoeducational and Psychotherapeutic Groups; Dyadic Parental Coordination. Chapter 3 integrate the Portuguese validation of the Acrimony Scale with a community sample of 196 divorced parents, with and without conflict, which resulted in a trifactorial model with good psychometric properties. Chapter 4 include the clinical-forensic feasibility trial developed with a sample of four divorced parental dyads and using within-subject and longitudinal designs. There were positive outcomes concerning retention, adherence and satisfaction rates, as well as statistically and clinically promising results in reducing coparenting conflict and improving the psychological adjustment of parents and children. Chapter 5 presents a qualitative study on the acceptability and appropriateness of For2Parents Program from parents' perspectives. This thesis aims to expand the scientific knowledge regarding high-conflict divorce, inform best practices at empirical and clinical-forensic levels, and more adjusted social and legal policies.
