Historically travelling was an option only for the affluent; however, with the turn of the 20th century, travelling shifted to an important form of free-choice learning by means of discovery. Travelogues of able-bodied travellers state that travelling offers them an opportunity for constructing new identities as it broadens their perspectives of self. This caused the researcher to question if the same experiences could be prompted amongst people with disabilities. Various disciplines recognise that travelling is a valuable opportunity for growth, but no literature could be found within Occupational Therapy. This led to the research question explored in this study: what is the shared, lived experience of travelling for people with disabilities? The objectives of this study are to describe and explore the purpose and overall experiences of travelling for people with disabilities, explore how people with disabilities perceive, understand and make sense of their experiences of travelling, and lastly to explore the meaning that travelling has for people with disabilities. The theoretical framework underpinning this study is the Peron-Environment-Occupation Model and the Model of Human Occupation, with specific reference to the philosophy of occupational science. Embedded in a philosophical worldview of social constructivism, a Hermeneutical Phenomenological design was chosen using a qualitative approach. Through purposive sampling, six participants were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was applied to analyse data subsequent to cross analysis, thereby developing a composite understanding of the meaning of travelling to the participants. The findings present three themes, namely: a Double edged sword which highlights the contradictory effects that travelling can have, followed by People are part of the package, which emphasises the participants’ interpretations of the immense role that society plays in disability, and lastly the most prominent theme Pilgrimage to self-discovery. Additionally, an Integrated Model was developed which integrates two prominent models within Occupational Therapy. Conclusively this study provides insight into how travelling facilitated the participants to develop a new identity.
Maillette, Pascale. "Les représentations de l’incapacité au travail de travailleurs ayant subi une arthroplastie du genou." Mémoire, Université de Sherbrooke, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11143/8143.
Повний текст джерелаAbstract : Purpose: Nearly 40% of the 57,718 Canadians who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between 2013 and 2014 were workers; the majority of them were aged from 55 to 64 years. Demographic and legislative indications suggest that this number will increase in the coming years. Actually, 15 to 30% of these patients report limitations at work or are not able to return to work six months after the surgery. Despite this growing phenomenon, workers’ insight on what influence work disability remains unknown. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to understand the worker’s perspective on what contributes or impedes the return to an active working life after TKA. Specifically, we aimed to document workers’ representations of their disability following TKA. Method: This qualitative study was conducted based on a narrative approach using Leventhal’s Common Sense Model (CSM) as the conceptual framework. A convenience sample of eight workers experiencing limitations while at work or being fully disabled (on sick leave) after TKA was interviewed. We conducted semistructured interviews, and then we followed Landry’s method for coding. First, we used a mixed coding method whereby codes were established a priori using the CSM with the possibility for emergent codes. Second, two researchers (PM and MFC) independently coded all interviews, compared the codes, and discussed diverging results. Third, after coding all interviews and based on the coding, content analysis was performed in multidisciplinary team (psychologist, physiotherapist, kinesiologist). Each interview was discussed by the team to compare the analysis and to obtain consensus as we believe our disciplinary backgrounds might impact interpretation of the data by bringing new information to the case. Content analysis was performed with Atlas-Ti software. Results: Half of the workers were fully disabled because of TKA. We identified two typical cases: workers who returned to work with difficulties but perceived support from their environment and workers who did not returned to work. The workers that returned to work reported involvement of their work environment in the return-to-work process. They felt they had greater improvement after TKA, and this enables them to further improve their condition. Workers who did not return to work encountered various obstacles such as ostoperative complications, a more physically-demanding job, negligible support from their work environment, and few resources to help them. Conclusion: The identification of a case that is less favorable to return to work allowed us to identify workers at risk of work disability. These workers could benefit from work rehabilitation services in order to promote a better active working life after TKA.

The health of the SMEs owner, as the first intangible asset of the entrepreneur, has been the subject of a trend of research for ten years, which tends to show that entrepreneurship is a vector of good health, although this health is subject to a greater range of emotions than that of employees. This doctoral work is part of this research by focusing on entrepreneurs with disabilities. This multidisciplinary thesis adopts an epistemological posture of interpretative type of inductive nature. Twenty entrepreneurs with disabilities who made an entrepreneurial transition (transition from wage-earning to entrepreneurship) were interviewed. In order to have a global understanding of this population, the type of disability, the date of the onset of the disability and the sector of activity were not selected as selection criteria to apprehend a wide variety of entrepreneurs in disability. Two aspects were studied in this doctoral work: entrepreneurs with disabilities and the entrepreneurial transition of people with disabilities. At the conceptual level, this doctoral research work has applied theories of entrepreneurial motivations and entrepreneurial salutogenesis. The results of this thesis highlight two findings: the centrality of disability in the life of the entrepreneur and the difficult alliance between entrepreneurship and disability

In France, disability has undergone changes since the successive laws of 1975, 1987 and 2005. Despite these developments, verbal discrimination, unemployment, low level of qualification and training, post adjustment of disabled workers, to employ persons with disabilities. Is the exclusion of workers with disabilities in companies really related to all these reasons? The social representations of disability seem to be the explanation for all this. The main need for disabled workers is to change and change representations about disability in the workplace. This for better integration, better socialization and better consideration of disability in companies. We will show that communication through sport is a managerial tool not to be neglected in a company. Indeed, sport and disability have juxtaposed for several years. Tie Sport, Handicap and Compagny, seems to be a winning trio to change the social representations of disability in France

While the legislation imposes the integration of people with disabilities to French organisations, those people are often perceived as negative organisational resources. In this context, this PhD thesis focuses on determining if dyslexic workers’ can be a positive organisational resource by investigating their potential competencies. This work relies on the life stories of twenty dyslexic workers and sheds light on the process of competencies development in which they engage. The analysis stresses that the dyslexic workers’ neurological configuration influences this process, which in turn creates idiosyncratic competences. The findings emphasise that those competencies have organisational value and that, therefore, those workers are a positive organisational resource. However, it also reveals that some factors, such as the orchestration of resources, tend to make those competences invisible to managers. This myopia participates in making the dyslexic workers hidden resources

The original question this thesis started with arose in the context of our professional activities within organizations dealing with the integration of disabled people in the world of work. How could policies specifically addressed to this public be enforced when the very definition of what characterized disabled people had not yet been formulated? After focusing our analyses on the limits of the current classifications of disabilities, on the impossibility to define disability with the exactness of scientific classifications or by only resorting to medicine, we thought of conceiving disability as a singular relationship between social norms and individual experience. In so doing, Foucault’s first works and mostly unpublished writings by Canguilhem were a great help. These authors allowed us to prepare our formulation of the concept of disability which is based on Yves Schwartz’s central idea of “corps-soi” (body and self together). A disability is then considered as a singular experience of the “body and self” in the face of antagonistic social norms. This view of what disability is lead us then to present our main thesis: disability, considered as a concept, can be used as a prism to renew the analysis of human practices and of theoretical discourse. We then submitted our thesis to three different test procedures, so as to check if, with disability as a starting point, we could renew our understanding of activities and theoretical corpuses, well-known though they may be. We felt the process tended to validate our reflection and eventually made suggestions as to how public policies for the disabled could benefit from our thesis

The idea of a society for everyone is often questioned as soon as mentally disabled persons are implied. Our research seizes this matter and studies cooperative engineering in a medico social institution(ESAT: Etablissement Service d’Aide par le Travail: institution for help to disabled adults through work). Our theoretical frame is anchored in the Joint Action Theory in Didactics. Our methodology is qualitative, ethnographic and clinical. To make visible and understandable the progressive construction of thought collective, we draw on emblematic examples. We analyse them in an ascending and understanding movement. The studied device is relying on everyone's skills in two complementary and linked actions: a collective inquiry work and a didactical activity in the workshops. We understand knowledge as power of action.Throughout twelves meetings of the cooperative engineering, the collective (professionals and the researcher) elaborates work hypotheses, in response to questioning systems derived from work in the workshops. In the ESAT workshops, during the engineering activity, these hypotheses are tested by a specific small group, comprised of one workshop instructor, workers and the researcher. New problems then arise.Analysis of these actions tends to demonstrate that by working together, the collective establishes itself as a cooperative engineering, with its own thought style. In doing so, in the understanding/transforming movement, the perception and conceptualisation of everyone (workers, professionals, and researcher)find themselves transformed

Statistics on the professional integration of disabled people in society suggest that this category of population is particularly vulnerable. The requirements for this category of workers, perceived as wanting in productivity and autonomy, far exceed what is expected of a valid candidate, even when it comes to positions where disability is not an objective barrier (Louvet, 2007). However, disabled people are credited with greater personal qualities than valid workers: in particular, they tend to be considered as more "deserving" (Louvet, Rohmer, & Dubois, 2009). To sum up, attitudes and behaviours towards people with disabilities range from benevolent attitudes about their "personal qualities" to very negative prejudices about their actual skills. In this respect, the stereotype can be considered as ambivalent. The consequences of this ambivalence are at the heart of this doctoral work. The main aim of this PhD is to show that this image of disability widely impacts the self-presentation strategies of disabled people in a recruitment context and also their actual performance. It is also shown that preliminary briefing of valid individuals regarding the social category of disability could lead to an effect of assimilation, that is to say behaviours corresponding to the existing stereotypes. In a theoretical perspective, this PhD tries to demonstrate the interest of decomposing social utility, so as to apply it to this field of study but also to that of motivation. Overall, results suggest that people with disabilities may focus essentially on producing efforts and mastering tasks, and that their performance consequently differs qualitatively from that of valid persons

At the centre of a good employability of the person, are self-directed skills (thinking and consciously choosing one's own future), both those of planning and redrawing oneself (life design). In the field of employability, the meeting of young people with disabilities and the world of work is difficult, because of the persistence of stereotypes and stigmas, as well as the lack of a real political and systemic will to apply and make comply with the regulations. It is therefore necessary to explore the construction of employability not only from a theoretical point of view, but also through the perception that young adults with disabilities have their employability in order to implement training and advice to explore skills related to the employability of all young adults, from an inclusive perspective. A empirical-descriptive exploratory research has been chosen. In particular, the tool developed by the IISFOL/INAPP and computerized by the technology Section of the SInAPSi University Centre was used to explore the employability potential of young adults with disabilities in Campania (18-30 years). It was also chosen to explore, through semi-structured interviews, the history and professional project of 20 young disabled Campani. With regard to the data analysis methodology, the use of the NVIVO software (Richards, 1999) is foreseen for the qualitative analysis of all interviews and the use of SPSS software to perform descriptive analyses of the data Collected. Young persons with disabilities who participated in the study have a potential for employability Moderately low employability and report difficulties in the design of their professional project. The qualitative analysis confirmed this difficulty and frame the professional project in terms of reorienting oneself between resources and barriers

Above all, it is an exploring research, aiming to contribute to the advancement of developmental psychology. Our research is based on our professional experience, both in psychology and neuropsychology: we observe the cognitive deficiencies of the intellectually disabled to enter the working market and there remain. Our sample has been defined following these criterias: lightly or moderate intellectually disabled person between 20 and 45 years old, male or female, with or without insertion project in an ordinary environment and without syndromes or psychiatric troubles associated. We have gone through the following steps before using the Cognitive Remediation Therapy: 1-use of an Intelligence Test; 2- observation in locus of the individual and relational abilities (in pre-test and in post-test) 3- Piaget’s tools evaluation (operating balance sheet in the pre-test and in the post-test to place their evolution). Finally, we have created three different Cognitive Remediation Therapy workshops in the middle of a division we have named DIR (I) (Individual Cognitive Remediation Device). Through all these workshops, we have solicited the highest potential of each individual, aiming a professional insertion. On each session, we have created new situations to help the intellectually disabled discover new strategies to solve different problems. The results we have obtained have proved that not only the Cognitive Remediation Therapy is a meaning to profit on the intellectual potential of the intellectually disabled, to allow them to elaborate systematic conduits, transposable and generalized towards other situations, but it also allows the evolution of their individual competences. The Cognitive Remediation Therapy, through solicitations, has proved to be a meaningful method in the preparation of the intellectually disabled for the professional life

This research deals with the topic of infirmity as a historical subject matter and for analysis. The age and the field chosen are an opportunity to analyze the sedimentation and renewal of some mechanisms based on the inferiorization of the infirm. The life and social paths of individuals from different social backgrounds are a means of understanding some dynamics, which has led me to formulate the concept of symbolic debt. Inspired by P. Bourdieu’s theory of sociology and his concept of symbolic violence, this idea is a useful tool to help understand the long history of social and imaginary conceptions that inferiorize an invalid through a mechanism of reversal of causes and effects. It is not the physical corporeal deficit which produces this inferiorization, but it is this inferiorizing vision that reads the physical data by decreeing the statute of inferiority of the individual. This social qualification seeks and finds reasons justifying it in the corporeal objectivity of the infirm. In the second part, we are faced with certain mechanisms, between practices and speech, which put us in front of the long history and the renewal of these plans of thought and action. At first, a number of cases of dispensation for irregularities by physical defect. The priest, who has to submit himselft because of his infirmity, becomes unworthy and irregular in the exercise of his ministry. The religious construction of the infirmity is also analyzed from the pastoral medicine, the discipline of the program of training of the priests, as well as from the theological elaboration. The silences which surround the individuals cause incidents within the industrial system, together with the opaqueness and the insufficiency of the development of the devices which should supply the first form of repair, establish, during the chosen historic period, new forms which contribute to the inferiorization of the status of the infirm. The third part is concerned with the analysis of certain discursive practices with a strong power to build public opinion and an image of the infirm: the chronicles of a daily paper and a corpus of more than a hundred literary texts. In conclusion, it raises again the question of the construction of the object of research within the study of disability, a field very articulated, very conflicting and strongly oriented toward action and involvement

This analysis of strategies used by a company in the employment of disabled persons is the product of fours years of observation, undertaken as part of a company-university doctoral partnership [“CIFRE” contract]. Our study is based on interactional data and documents produced by company’s activities (communication mediums, e-mails, meetings notes, etc...). Our work falls within the boundaries of interactional linguistics, with a specific focus on how companies define disability. We were able to analyze a series of descriptive practices of disability in the context of meetings (for the preparation of internal communication, to inform and raise awareness among personnel) and though documents produced to implement an employment policy for persons with disabilities. These practices reveal ways of describing disability that greatly differ from ordinary practices, which often treat disability as a stigma. Indeed, company practices seek to present disability as a resource, in order to convincingly convey the benefits of employing disabled persons (management and financial gains, etc.). The descriptions produced are constitutive of a knowledge about disability, unique to the company’s context, and which make visible to the analyst both the processes of categorization of disabled persons as well as presumptive knowledge concerning this category. The analysis of practices observed allowed us to design a document to inform and raise awareness about the implementation of an employment policy concerning people with disabilities

The topic of this research is education specialists’ professional writing. It is generally assumed that education specialists feel rather uncomfortable with professional writings although language whether, oral or written, IS the work. Moreover, since the early 2000’s, along with the changes implied by the New Public Management reforms, a huge emphasis is put on written activities in this profession. This research examines the real issues hidden behind the claim of an oral tradition explanation from educators specialist. Starting with the constraints (natural, non-natural, narratives, linguistics) that are bearing upon these educators’ professional writing, this work is organized in two parts. The first part is setting up a conceptual frame based on history, words, knowledge and language of educational workers through authors like Michel Foucault, Georges Canguilhem, Paul Ricoeur. The second part focuses on what educators, employed in a non profit organization, actually say about their practices through a quantitative enquiry and on analysis of documents. This non profit organization (OVE) dedicated to persons with special needs, manages 60 institutions and services and employs 389 teachers. To the end this research opens new ways of considering relations between professionals and persons with special needs, connections between profession and writing and, through narrative method, renewed forms of professional writing. Through thinking a new articulation between praxis and the clinical of care, a reflection on the place of literacies and pratices’ analysis is therefore needed in the educational training of this professionals

Following two World Wars, the societal consideration of disability has considerably evolved. Most of countries have implemented national disability policies in order to improve disabled people professional integration. Nevertheless, in order to be part of such policies, disability first needs to be institutionally disclosed. Institutional disclosure is far from being automatic as disability is frequently concealed since university. In this perspective, based on the decision making theories this thesis aims at understanding the institutional disclosure process. We focus on the specific case of students with disabilities. A qualitative study based on semi structured interviews, life story interviews, participant observations and secondary data analysis has been conducted. Our results show that several individual and environmental reasons affect disclosure motivations. The consequences of disclosure can be analyzed in terms of expectancies confirmation and disconfirmation. Finally disclosure follows four distinctive strategies

Creating an emergency call centre dedicated to deaf and hard of hearing users has required the design and implementation of a specific socio-technical system in order to take into account the diversity of their communication practices. Our research is grounded on such technical project specifically oriented towards the accessibility to an organization acting mainly through telephonic interactions and therefrom emerged for us the opportunity to conduct a cross-reflection on socio-technical devices apprehended as a working tool and an accessibility tool. Based on elements obtained through an ethnographic study conducted in emergency call centres which has given empirical material that we are bringing into discussion with traces of the process of the product design, we are questioning the place and status of communication devices in the local environment. Along with this questioning, we are also observing how communication devices practically achieve accessibility within the social model of disability. Two main themes are therefore explored: the organization of work activities in situations of mediated communication and the process, engaged by the design and implementation of an accessibility device, by which conventional practices are reformulated. To do so, we draw on conceptual tools and works from Situated action theory and Sociology of science and technology. We also mobilize Disability and Deaf Studies literature. Through a refined description of the multiple courses of action and a subtle attention to the materiality of interactional practices, we demonstrate that communication technical devices are a piece of an heterogeneous assembly, that make sense in situation, and act as an invisible scaffolding that organize and stabilize communication practices. We propose to designate this form of stabilization under the name of communicational infrastructure and to use it as a conceptual tool for approaching the introduction of new communication devices in organizations and to support a reflection on accessibility-in-practices

Work is a key-factor of recovery for people with severe mental illness. Various programs exist to support them to gain and maintain competitive employment. In France, the rate of employment remains low for this population and only scarce researches are developed in this field, although some French practices, such as the Ç ESAT de transition È (transitional workshops) of the MESSIDOR association, appear to be performing well. Theses transitional workshops support people with psychiatric disability to gain a competitive employment on the regular labor market while working in a sheltered activity. The goal of this research was to describe the Ç ESAT de transition È program, comparing it to international evidence-based practices, such as supported-employment programs, and to define how this program can facilitate a recovery process for people with a severe mental illness. The first part of this research is intended to describe the program with a mixed method (qualitative then quantitative) in order to compare it with international evidence-based practices and to describe the roles, tasks and competencies of the two professionals supervising people with a severe mental illness, counselors and supervisors, and to define how they contribute to a recovery process for them. A second part of the research is dedicated to clients of this program, with a longitudinal study (n=160) of clinical and psychosocial variables, at the beginning of the program, and in order to document predictive factors of their job tenure in the program, of their positive evolution to work integration on the regular labor market and of their recovery. These Ç ESAT de transition È are an hybrid form of a sheltered workshop, social enterprise and supported-employment program for people with a severe mental illness. In a workplace close to the context of regular labor market, thanks to a subtle relational posture, the two professionals supervising the workers help them to develop a new positive identity, self-esteem as a worker and hope in the future, which are key-factors of a recovery process. Clients have a positive perception of their situation in this program, on clinical and psychosocial variables, and this perception is stable on the 9 months follow-up of the study. They confirm that self-esteem as a worker, counselors and supervisors are key-factors to ensure their job tenure in the program, their positive evolution to work integration on the regular labor market and their recovery. Practical implications and recommendations from this research are the type of support that should be developed in France for people a with severe mental illness to help their work integration, as well as the type of training and supervision that should be offered to the professionals supporting them

Low back pain is a major public and occupational health issue in industrialized countries. Chronic low back pain and resulting disability are potential sources of impaired quality of life, breaking career and even socio-professional exclusion. The first part of this work places the issue of the back intervertebral disc disease related to work and its social recognition. The low back pain chronicity and the social and professional restriction of participation are part of a dynamic model involving factors related to the individual, to the prevention and care system, to work, and to the financial compensation system. The need for integration of all these elements for medical care, prevention and medical and occupational surveillance of low back pain workers is developed through the presentation of recommendations for good practice. Recommendations for pre-return-to-work medical examination especially emphasize the benefit of coordinating medical, social and occupational actors for the return to / retention at work and the fight against occupational exclusion of low back pain workers. Finally, the offered to low back pain workers strategies which have shown their effectiveness in reducing the duration of sick leave combine an intensive physical rehabilitation, a cognitive-behavioral approach, a workplace intervention and the coordination of return to work actors. However, the implementation of these complex interventions has a great number of limitations

In France as in Japan, the educational system for children with disabilities has undergone major changes for the last years, through the development of inclusive education, promoting enrollment in mainstream schools rather than special institutions. However, special schools have not disappeared; they are rather evolving so as to adapt to changes. This work is grounded on the idea that these transformations represent the completion of a historical trend shifting from a category-based approach of disability (in which different medical categories result in specialized treatments) to an approach that, as opposed to the latter, we can call generalist (in which categories of impairments fade into the unified category of “special educational needs”). How do special schools, deeply rooted in the category-based specialized approach, evolve in the days of generalism? We examine the specific case of Schools for the Blind, embodiments of the specialized approach. Through a French-Japanese comparison, we shed light on some gray areas of the international move towards inclusive education. Using the field of work sociology, especially the concept of “skills”, we explore the transformations of special institutions as experiences by their representatives: special teachers. Through comparison, we show that special teachers' work in these schools is no longer based on an expertise of visual disability but relies on the use of relational skills, especially involving adaptation to every child's “special educational needs”, in a context of radically changing teaching conditions, where it becomes growingly difficult to put those skills into practice

This thesis intends to show how the State reconfigures itself through the associative sector. It is based on the study of the public employment service “Cap Emploi” for unemployed and disabled people, created in 2005 and carried through associations. I conducted an ethnographic survey in three Cap Emploi, using several observation scales and ethnographer tools (observations, interviews, ethnographic statistics, documentary work). I studied different elements of variation in professional practices, in the light of work organization, properties of users, and properties of workers. The first part of the thesis deals with the progressive implementation of management tools imported from the private sector, in these non-profit organizations, as a result of their contractualization with the State. It shows how the “New Public Management” is carried out in this non-profit sector. A second part relates the uneasy conciliation between an effort to individualize and an effort to rationalize (following a managerial logic) social policies. It studies the unemployed ranking process according to their expected employability, and shows that the different types of sorting of the beneficiaries primarily concerns people suffering from a psychological handicap. Finally, the third part of the thesis is devoted to the study of these association workers, the “new face of public service”. It studies their position toward this kind of hybrid organization, combining an analysis in terms of trajectory and gender

The subject of this thesis in Education Science is part of a qualitative interpretive and comprehensive survey with phenomenological sensitivity, and focuses on the training path towards the professional insertion of young peoplewith disabilities. It proposes, from their stories, to understand the personal subjective meaning that each one can give to his/her path and his own life, to understand how these young people develop their vocational guidance project, how they can become the authors of their training and of their insertion through the experience of disability, for some of them with physical impairments. The chosen approach was to give priority to the narrative feature with an opening to otherness, a sensitive listening to the fragments of course delivered by these young people, and an analysis in a multi-referentiality bringing intelligibility to this research topic and emerging phenomena. A first analysis-synthesis work for each of the portraits with a reading based on key notions such as subject-actor, psychological empowerment, events, bifurcations and biographical transitions, gives prospects of generalization in the form of pathways typologies

Proposals for simplification of the devices, to ensure consistency between them are made to allow wider access. The search for the protection of beneficiaries is present, especially in the study of processes of professionalization, through training or professional organization of the sector. Proposals are made there. The protection of beneficiaries is also studied in terms of existing legal frameworks, where it seems necessary to make it stronger. Finally to expand the support for family caregivers, an essential pillar of taking into account the dependence of the elderly and disabled persons, we have to change the current law

The study aimed to investigate the correlation among perceived travel risk, social support and travel intention of families with disable students and further analyzed the prediction of perceived travel risk and social support of caregivers the disabled students on travel intention. The instruments of the current study included Perceived travel risk questionnaire(four dimensions, 20 items), Social support questionnaire(three dimensions, 13 items) and travel intention questionnaire(one dimension, 4 items),which were developed from this study. Through purposive sampling, a total number of 381 valid questionnaires on caregivers of the disabled students were collected. The main findings of this study were summarized as follows: 1. Family travel around 1-2 times in the past year is founded to be the most. The way of travel is mainly by parents taking their children out. The goal of travel is reported to relax the most, and the second one is to promote the physical and mental health of family members. 2. The highest result of family travel perception risk of students with disabilities is service risk, followed by facility risk, and the lowest is physical risk; the highest result of social support is emotional support, and the second highest one is level of information support, followed by the lowest instrumental support; the overall family travel intention is quite high. 3. Among different caregivers’ background factors, people aged under 40 years old are discovered to be the highest in perceived of physical risk. As for children with multiple, physical or profound intellectual disability or aged under 6 years old, the results of these respondents on perceived of travel risk and every domain of perception are founded to be relatively higher. 4. Caregivers of children studying at high school or aged 17-19 years old are discovered to be relatively higher among social support, instrumental support and information support. 5. Caregivers of children studying at kindergarten or family travel around 3-4 times and more than 5 times per year show significantly higher travel intention while family travel less than 1 time per year shows significantly lower travel intention. 6. Negative correlation is founded among Perceived of travel risk questionnaire, physical risk, mental risk and travel intention. Physical risk shows negative prediction to travel intention, which indicates when the physical risk increases, the travel intention is reduced. 7. Moderately positive correlation is found between every domain and travel intention. Emotional support indicates positive prediction to travel intention, which shows when caregivers perceive higher emotional supports, the travel intention of caregivers would increase.

In last decay, researches on accessible tourism have been one of the foci in tourism. This study attempted to test the applicability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model adding media information search construct on travel intention of people with physical disability. The study sample comprised 740 respondents. After the eliminations, our sample consisted of 710 with high responding rate (95.9%), in which the most respondents were primarily married, aged, educated, low-paid people with severe disability. Regression analysis was performed to test the hypotheses as well as to examine the contribution of independent variables in influencing the dependent variable. The regression analysis tested the influence of all predictors on travel intention and tested the moderating effect of media information search and research hypotheses. The results also indicated that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and media information search have positive and significant impact on travel intention of people with physical disabilities at significant level. In particular, media search moderates the relationship between perceived behavioral control and travel intention. Finally, implications and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Various factors seem linked to the issue of the integration of workers living with impairments or disabilities, notably training, the compensation of disabilities, and the hiring of these individuals and others. The rationale of this thesis rests on the integration of differences in the workplace pertaining to individuals with impairments or disabilities. This integration is in line with current social trends and is associated with the effective realization of the right to equality. This thesis is aimed at discovering how the integration of differences is achieved in the workplace between workers with impairments or disabilities and workers who do not have these features. To achieve this objective, the INDCP/CSICIDH model (1998) focusing on the Disability Creation Process was used. Writings by Goffman (1973, 1974), particularly those concerning interactions in everyday life, were also used as a basis to understand this phenomenon. In order to acquire a clear understanding of the day-to-day reality and the integration process, it seems important to me to follow a twofold methodology: a 9 month ethnological observation of banking sector workers belonging to three teams, each team having a different role, and fifteen semi-structured interviews involving employees with an impairment or a disability, workers without limitations and their managers. Obtaining case histories through interviews and confirming this information by means of observation in the workplace enables me to gain an insight into the situation which would not have been possible otherwise. Every worker with an impairment or a disability was paired with a non-disabled worker whose level of experience was comparable. The number of years of experience was taken into account. Certain subjects have less than two years of experience while others have more than two years. Team size is another factor that was considered. Two teams are made up of about twenty employees, and the third team, about fifty. In one team, only one worker has an impairment or a disability, while in the two other teams, more than one worker has these features. There are five pairs of employees. Each subject observed was compared to the worker with whom he or she was paired. The analysis of the results reveals that integration factors are more related to production as a system (for example, having a good knowledge of tasks, delivering a performance similar to that of other employees, and scoring well on performance appraisals) than to the interactions between workers. Furthermore, these results apply more significantly to employees with impairments and disabilities than to the other workers. This body of work has also allowed the transformation of the INDCP/CSICIDH model which has broadened from the study of impairments only and now encompasses the study of differences. The subjects involved were not only workers with deficiencies, but also employees with no impairments. We have moved from the Disability Creation Process model to the Difference Integration Creation Process. The expected scope is to cover other types of differences, such as age, gender, and nationality of subjects in various environments.

Introduction: This thesis consists of three interrelated papers. The first one set out to clarify conceptual issues surrounding the notion of work ability/disability, its definition and its evolution over time. The aims of the second and third paper are to assess the differential effect of the determinants of time to return-to-work (RTW) and compensation duration by gender, as well as the related costs, in workers receiving long-term compensation benefits for musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Methods: The first study consists of developing an integrative concept map of work (dis)ability through the systematic scoping review of its definitions and a comparative analysis based on the grounded theory approach. In the second study, a cohort of 455 adults on long-term disability due to work-related MSIs of the back/neck/upper limb was followed for five years through structured interviews and administrative databases. Cox regression modeling stratified by gender was used to assess time to a first RTW of at least three days. In the third study, a register-based cohort of 13,073 men and 9032 women with long-term claims related to neck/back/upper-limb MSIs was followed for three years. Main outcomes were compensation duration and costs. Gender stratified extended Cox models were used to study the compensation duration and detect time-varying effects. Results: The definitions analyzed in the first study do not reflect a shared, integrated vision of the exact nature and attributes of work (dis)ability. However, there seems to be a relative consensus that work (dis)ability is a relational concept resulting from the interaction of multiple dimensions at different ecological levels (individual, organizational and societal). The second study showed that despite similar survival curves of time to RTW between men and women on long-term disability (p=0.920), several factors influencing RTW differed by gender. Women’s risk factors included older age (HR=0.734 - in 10 years unit), poor perceived economic status (HR=0.625), working ≥40 hours/week and having dependents (HR=0.508) and awareness of workplace-based occupational health and safety program (HR=0.598); higher gross annual income (in $10,000s) was a facilitator (HR=1.225). In men, being over 55 years old (HR=0.458), poor perceived economic status (HR=0.653), working ≥40 hours/week and high perceived physical workload (HR=0.720) and higher job insecurity (HR=0.825) negatively influenced time to RTW. The third study revealed that three years post-injury, 12.3% of men and 7.3% of women were still receiving compensation benefits, with a male-female cost ratio of 2.1:1 for all compensation claims. Effects of certain predictors (e.g. income, injury site or industry) differed markedly between men and women. Age and claim history had time-varying effects in men and women’s models respectively. Conclusion: The way work (dis)ability is defined has important implications for research, compensation and rehabilitation. Results also confirm the importance of gender-sensitive studies to investigate the determinants of RTW and time on compensation benefits.

Despite years of research on chronic pain and disability, there is yet little consensus on a core set of risk factors. One thing that most agree on, is the fact that musculoskeletal disorders and the adjustment to its consequences is a complex, multidimensional process determined by biopsychosocial factors interacting with one another. Two articles are presented with the overall goal of identifying significant determinants of adjustment to musculoskeletal disorders. The first article is a systematic literature review that aimed at reviewing all pertinent biopsychosocial prognostic factors of adjustment to musculoskeletal disorders and assessed their relevance in predicting multidimensional outcomes, namely work participation, functional disability, pain, quality of life, psychological distress and recurrence. The 105 prospective studies identified and fitting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed and all significant associations were summarized. Then, 68 studies that included sociodemoraphic and biopsychosocial risk factors were separately analysed for their methodological quality, level of evidence (LOE) was established for each association between risk factors and outcome variables and existing differences were highlighted between phases of chronicity. Strong evidence was found for recovery expectations, coping, somatization, comorbidity, duration of episode, disability management and moderate evidence was found for pain behaviours. When it comes to predicting different outcomes reflecting the adjustment process of subjects with musculoskeletal disorders, each tends to have a different set of predictors. Few significant differences were found according to phases of chronicity. These results support the biopsychosocial nature of the adjustment to musculoskeletal disorders with a predominance of psychosocial determinants. The second article is a prospective study with follow-ups at 2 and 8 months and was conducted on a sample of 62 mostly chronic occupationally injured workers receiving compensation benefits from the CSST (Quebec Workers’ Compensation Board). The study aimed to identify determinants of active involvement in a return to work process while adopting a biopsychosocial approach. It did so by investigating the pertinence of previously studied risk factors but for which no consensus yet exists, but also by investigating the pertinence of previously neglected or even omitted risk factors. After multivariate analysis, gender, work recovery expectations and importance of work were predictive of work outcomes at 2 months. After 8 months, age, medical consolidation, trauma symptoms, work support and importance of work predicted work outcomes. The results show the importance of approaching chronic work disability from a multidimensional perspective, although corroborating our literature review’s findings that psychosocial variables appear to be more significant predictors in this study.
