This concluding chapter revisits the main topics of the book and emphasizes the need to reframe the problem of normatively inappropriate dissent (NID). It contends that limiting attention to the role that problematic dissent plays in undermining support for particular policies and actions is both misguided and dangerous. It calls for a reframing of the problem in ways that are likely to be more fruitful in trying to address the problems that can stem from NID, such as developing scientific and institutional practices that promote warranted public trust in science and encouraging better ways to engage in discussions with all relevant parties about the values at stake in various policy decisions.

This chapter suggests two broad and distinctive directions that could benefit the field of queer legal history. The first direction relates to the historical circumstances in which queerness presented a ‘hard case’ for those charged with making or enforcing law, sometimes strengthening their existing understandings of law and the legal system, but in other instances provoking a crisis of administration and adjudication or even a jurisprudential paradigm shift. This first direction, in other words, probes the ways in which queerness challenged the law of police officers, politicians, advocates, judges, and legal theorists, beyond law simply disciplining queerness. The second direction points to the profound gaps in queer legal history when it comes to thinking comparatively between different jurisdictions or transnationally across their bounds. It highlights how queerness in legal history might usefully be taken, and take us, beyond jurisdictional domains.

This chapter looks at the calculus of a function of two or more variables, which is the subject of partial differentiation. The partial derivative of a function is the rate of change of the function with respect to the distance in the direction of a particular coordinate axis and is symbolised with the sign ∂. The chapter spends time on the implicit function theorem, since it is relied upon heavily elsewhere in the text. Lagrange multipliers are used to solve constrained optimisation problems. Topics include critical points, the product rule, the chain rule, directional derivatives, hypersurfaces and Taylor’s theorem. In addition, the chapter discusses Jacobian matrices, the inverse function theorem, gradients, level sets and Hessian matrices.
