Digital twining (DT) is a recent approach in designing, optimization, and exploitation of cyber physical systems (CPS). DT can be used to simulate the behaviour of the CPS during a failure event, allowing reliability engineers to identify areas of the system that are vulnerable to failure, the root cause of the failure and to develop strategies for prevention. In this paper the interest goes to designing CPS based on digital twining approach while maximizing CPS reliability. The most common CPS reliability requirements are investigated and their reliability optimization strategies when using DT are discussed.

Over the last few decades, our digitally expanding world has experienced another significant digitalization boost because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital transformations are changing every aspect of this world. New technological innovations are springing up continuously, attracting increasing attention and investments. Digital twin, one of the highest trending technologies of recent years, is now joining forces with the healthcare sector, which has been under the spotlight since the outbreak of COVID-19. This paper sets out to promote a better understanding of digital twin technology, clarify some common misconceptions, and review the current trajectory of digital twin applications in healthcare. Furthermore, the functionalities of the digital twin in different life stages are summarized in the context of a digital twin model in healthcare. Following the Internet of Things as a service concept and digital twining as a service model supporting Industry 4.0, we propose a paradigm of digital twinning everything as a healthcare service, and different groups of physical entities are also clarified for clear reference of digital twin architecture in healthcare. This research discusses the value of digital twin technology in healthcare, as well as current challenges and insights for future research.

The topic of this paper represents our research in the process of creating a virtual model (digital twin) for a fast-food company production chain starting with the moment when a customer launches an order, following with the processing of that order, until the customer receives it. The model will describe elements that are included in this process such as equipment, human resources and the necessary space that is needed to host this layout. The virtual model created in a simulation platform will be a replicate of a real fast-food company, thus helping us observe the real time dynamic of this production system. Using WITNESS HORIZON 23 we will construct the model of the layout based on real time data received from the fast-food company. This digital twin will be used to manage the production chain material flow, evaluating the performance of the system architecture in various scenarios. In order to obtain a diagnosis of the system’s performance we will simulate the workflow running through preliminary architecture in compliance with the real time behaviour to identify the bottlenecks and blockages in the flow trajectory. In the end we will propose two different optimised architectures for the fast-food company production chain.

Zero-defect manufacturing and flexibility in production lines is driven from accurate Digital Twins (DT) which monitor, understand, and predict the behavior of a manufacturing process under different conditions while also adapting to them by deciding the right course of action in time intervals relevant to the captured phenomenon. During the exploration of the alternative approaches for the development of process twins, significant efforts should be made for the selection of acquisition devices and signal-processing techniques to extract meaningful information from the studied process. As such, in Industry 4.0 era, machine tools are equipped with embedded sensors that give feedback related to the process efficiency and machine health, while additional sensors are installed to capture process-related phenomena, feeding simulation tools and decision-making algorithms. Although the maturity level of some process mechanisms facilitates the representation of the physical world with the aid of physics-based models, data-driven models are proposed for complex phenomena and non-mature processes. This paper introduces the components of Digital Twin and gives emphasis on the steps that are required to transform obtained data into meaningful information that will be used in a Digital Twin. The introduced steps are identified in a case study from the milling process.

Digital twins are the most important parts of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), and play a crucial role in the realization of the Metaverse. Therefore, two important factors: flexibility and adaptability, need to be focused on digital twinning systems. From a virtual perspective, constructing buildings, structures, and mechanisms in the Metaverse requires digital materials and components. Hence, accurate and reliable digital models can guarantee the success of implementation, particularly when it comes to completing physical twins in the real world. Accordingly, four Machine Learning (ML) methods to make digital twins of an advanced 42SiCr alloy considering all of its uncertainties and non-linearities have been employed in this paper. These ML methods accelerate the digitalization of the proposed alloy and allow users to employ them for a wide range of similar metals. Based on this technique, producers can borrow these virtual materials and build their structures in the Metaverse. This way, if the properties of the materials were satisfactory, they might buy them and start manufacturing their products. As a case study, we focus on digital twining of an 42SiCr steel with some influential factors in its mechanical properties, making the nature of the alloy complex. Processes, including heat treatment, may restore the material’s deformability; however, Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) not only eliminates the impact of cold forming but also provides advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) properties. In this research, the combined impacts of different Q&P treatments were investigated on the mechanical properties of 42SiCr steel alloy. The results have shown the acceptability and accuracy of the proposed ML methods in realizing the digital twins of this complex alloy.

Digital twins (DTHs) and virtual twins (VTHs) in healthcare represent emerging technologies towards precision medicine, providing opportunities for patient-centric healthcare. Our scoping review aimed to map the current DTH and VTH technologies in oncology, summarize their technical solutions, and assess their credibility. A systematic search was conducted in the main bibliographic databases, identifying 441 records, of which 30 were included. The studies covered a wide range of cancers, including breast, lung, colorectal, and gastrointestinal malignancies, with DTH and VTH applications focusing on diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring. The results revealed heterogeneity in targeted topics, technical approaches, and outcomes. Most twining solutions use synthetic or limited real-world data, raising concerns regarding their reliability. Few studies have integrated real-time data and machine learning for predictive modeling. Technical challenges include data integration, scalability, and ethical considerations, such as data privacy and security. Moreover, the evidence lacks sufficient clinical validation, with only partial credibility in most cases. Our findings underscore the need for multidisciplinary collaboration among end-users and developers to address the technical and ethical challenges of DTH and VTH systems. Although promising for the future of personalized oncology, substantial steps are required to move beyond experimental frameworks and to achieve clinical implementation.

This article examines Blackstone’s Tower: The English Law School from the perspective of law students entering and studying in law schools 25+ years after the publication of the book. The article provides an alternative ‘tour’ of an English law school, the tour that might be given by students. In doing so it asks to what extent students now would recognize the tour on which Twining took us in 1994 and what key sites and debates are either missing or now redundant. In particular, the article aims to encourage us to think about both physical and digital aspects of campus life, the increasing role of marketing, the growing emphasis on student support (particularly relating to wellbeing) and the continuing tensions between the vocational and liberal legal education. Key words: legal education; law students; student experience; student support.

Given the complexity of human left heart anatomy and valvular structures, the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) simulation of native and prosthetic valves poses a significant challenge for numerical methods. In this review, recent numerical advancements for both fluid and structural solvers for heart valves in patient-specific left hearts are systematically considered, emphasizing the numerical treatments of blood flow and valve surfaces, which are the most critical aspects for accurate simulations. Numerical methods for hemodynamics are considered under both the continuum and discrete (particle) approaches. The numerical treatments for the structural dynamics of aortic/mitral valves and FSI coupling methods between the solid Ωs and fluid domain Ωf are also reviewed. Future work toward more advanced patient-specific simulations is also discussed, including the fusion of high-fidelity simulation within vivo measurements and physics-based digital twining based on data analytics and machine learning techniques.

Computer simulation based on digital twin is an essential process when designing self-driving cars. However, designing a simulation program that is exactly equivalent to real phenomena can be arduous and cost-ineffective because too many things must be implemented. In this paper, we propose the method using the online game GTA5 (Grand Theft Auto5), as a groundwork for autonomous vehicle simulation. As GTA5 has a variety of well-implemented objects, people, and roads, it can be considered a suitable tool for simulation. By using OpenCV (Open source computer vision) to capture the GTA5 game screen and analyzing images with YOLO (You Only Look Once) and TensorFlow based on Python, we can build a quite accurate object recognition system. This can lead to writing of algorithms for object avoidance and lane recognition. Once these algorithms have been completed, vehicles in GTA5 can be controlled through codes composed of the basic functions of autonomous driving, such as collision avoidance and lane-departure prevention. In addition, the algorithm tested with GTA5 has been implemented with a programmable RC car (Radio control car), DonkeyCar, to increase reliability. By testing those algorithms, we can ensure that the algorithms can be conducted in real time and they cost low power and low memory size. Therefore, we have found a way to approach digital twin technology one step more easily.

It has been found that commercially pure (CP) Titanium (Ti) undergoes substantial amount of deformation twinning during plastic forming in a wide range of temperatures and strain rates giving CP-Ti good ductility and allowing up to 90% thickness reduction by cold rolling. Aluminium (Al) rich ! Ti-alloys lack this superior ductility but exhibit therefore up to five times higher yield strength, which was connected experimentally to reduced activity of deformation twinning with addition of Al to Ti. Ultimately this is also valid in the ! phase of two-phase alloys such as Ti6Al4V and thought to be key to the reduced ductility in Al rich alloys. It is to date unclear if ordering of Al in the Ti matrix, a change in the stacking fault energy (SFE) with alloying or a transition of the cellular dislocation structures in CP-Ti to planar slip patterns at high Al contents reduces twin activity. The focus of this dissertation project is therefore the transition of microstructural details and the deformation structures in the ! phase with increasing Al concentration. For simplified investigations binary Ti-Al alloys containing 3.5, 7, 10 and 13at.% Al have been created with comparable grain morphology and texture within this study. For a better understanding of the role of Al also binary Ti-Sn (Tin) alloys (1 & 3.4at.% Sn) and Ti-Zr (Zirconium) alloys (3.6 & 10at.%) as well as an Oxygen (O) rich Ti-10at.%Al and the industrial compositions of Ti6Al4V were produced on the same route and investigated by the same methods. This alloy range allows evaluation of the effects of the c/a ratio, ordering phenomena and the SFE on the twin activity. The knowledge was finally transferred to industrially forged CP-Ti and Ti5Al2.5Sn. TEM and neutron diffraction confirmed the onset of Ti3Al formation from Al concentrations above 7at.% (4wt%), but no ordering of Zr or Sn atoms was found after solution treatments. The evolution of lattice strain and lattice reorientation due to twinning with increasing compressive strain was captured by in-situ experiments under neutron diffraction at Engin-X, ISIS. Post-mortem EBSD micro and macro texture mappings revealed that the twin fraction in Al reduces above a critical concentration of 7at.% (4wt%), which was enhanced with increasing ordering towards Ti3Al. Sn and Zr addition showed no significant effect on the overall twin fraction, but increased twin numbers with facilitated nucleation and impeded twin growth, which may be related to the SFE. Increasing slip planarity and a transition from prismatic slip towards basal slip with addition of Al was found with means of Digital image correlation (DIC). DIC also revealed intense prismatic slip in grains undergoing !"!! tension twinning and virtually barely any strain accumulation within a twin below 9% plastic strain, rationalised by much increased nanohardness in the twin in comparison to the parent. Nanoindentation also revealed that alloying with Al reduces the crystal anisotropy. Finally it is believed that ordering and the closely related transition of slip patterns lead to the reduction in twin activity, while c/a ratio, crystal anisotropy and SFE seem less important.

This thesis explores the development and validation of autonomous navigation systems within a mixed-reality (MR) framework, aiming to bridge the gap between virtual simulation and real-world testing. The research emphasizes the potential of MR environments for safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively testing autonomous systems. The thesis is structured around several chapters, beginning with a review of state-of-the-art technologies in autonomous navigation and mixed-reality applications. Through both rule-based and learning-based models, the research investigates the performance of autonomous robots within simulated, real, and MR environments. One of the core objectives is to reduce the "reality gap"—the discrepancy between behaviors observed in simulations versus real-world applications—by integrating real- world elements with virtual components in MR environments. This approach allows for more accurate testing and validation of algorithms without the risks associated with physical trials. A significant part of the work is dedicated to implementing and testing an offline augmentation strategy aimed at enhancing the perception capabilities of autonomous systems using depth information. Furthermore, reinforcement learning (RL) is applied to evaluate its potential within MR environments. The thesis demonstrates that RL models can effectively learn to navigate and avoid obstacles in virtual simulations and perform similarly well when transferred to MR environments, highlighting the framework’s flexibility for different autonomous system models. Through these experiments, the thesis establishes MR environments as a versatile and robust platform for advancing autonomous navigation technologies, offering a safer, more scalable approach to model validation before real-world deployment

Gamma titanium aluminide alloys are emerging as a lightweight replacement to nickel superalloys, with current application in turbine stages of aero-engines, as well as in high performance automobiles and potentially the nuclear industry. The lack of toughness of its two constitutive intermetallic phases, γ-TiAl and α2-Ti3Al, prevents a conventional damage tolerant approach to fatigue lifing. To gain confidence in the use of γ-TiAl alloys and extend the temperature-stress envelope of applicability, the present work aims to achieve an understanding of the development of plasticity and flaw formation during cyclic loading. The general plasticity of a γ-TiAl alloy, Ti-45Al-2Nb-2Mn(at.%)-0.8vol.%TiB2, in compression was investigated by mapping the development of localised strain at the specimen surface. Methods were developed to produce speckle patterns for high resolution digital image correlation that were stable at test temperatures of 700 °C in air, in order to study the extent of plasticity generated by differing deformation mechanisms at application-relevant temperatures, with nano-scale resolution. At the colony scale (i.e. single stacks of co-planar α2-Ti3Al and γ-TiAl lamellae, where each stack is formed from a single high temperature disordered α-TiAl grain), macroscopic deformation bands were observed to develop at only a few percent strain. Within such bands, which propagated across many colonies of differing lamellar orientations, considerable lattice curvature and localised slip and twin operation occurred. This correlated with colony boundary failure in such bands. Twinning of the γ-TiAl phase parallel to the lamellar interfaces, longitudinal twinning, has rarely been studied, despite generalised twinning in equiaxed γ-TiAl grains being known to cause boundary decohesion. Here, the occurrence of longitudinal twinning in both microcompression and polycrystalline testpieces was investigated up to 700 °C by electron backscatter diffraction. The strength of constraint by surrounding lamellar domains was found to be the determining factor in the increased prominence of twinning at 700 °C, and hence determined whether twinning shear-induced flaws formed at colony boundaries. Using the high temperature digital image correlation strain mapping and electron backscatter diffraction techniques developed, along with transmission electron microscopy, the onset of plasticity at temperatures up to 700 °C was studied in both micro-scale and macro-scale test specimens for different lamellar thicknesses. Testpieces were loaded below the macroscopic yield stress in both monotonic and high cycle fatigue regimes, to 107 cycles, at a tensile stress ratio of R = 0.1. Longitudinal plasticity occurred in most colonies with soft mode lamellar orientations, and was located just 30 - 50 nm from lamellar interfaces. Lamellar refinement caused an increased number of slip bands to develop. In most cases, plastic strains decreased to zero by the colony boundary and strain transfer across such boundaries in high cycle fatigue was rare. At room temperature, the maximum applied stress was found to influence the number of slip bands more than the number of loading cycles.

The increase in tourism activity globally has led to overcrowding, causing damage to local ecosystems and degradation of the tourism experience. To plan tourist activity it is necessary to define adequate indicators and understand the dynamics of tourist crowds. The main goals of this dissertation are the development of (1) an algorithm for assessing spatially fine-grained, physical carrying capacity (PCC) for a complex urban fabric, (2) an agent-based simulation model for the egress of participants in public open space tourism attraction events and (3) an agent-based simulation model using the PCC algorithm for tourism crowding stress analysis in urban fabric constrained scenarios. OpenStreetMap open-data was used throughout this research. The proposed PCC algorithm was tested in Santa Maria Maior parish in Lisbon that has a complex ancient urban fabric. The GAMA agent-based platform was used in the two simulation studies. The first compared two scenarios (normal and COVID-19) in three major public spaces in Lisbon and the second focused on the simulation of a real-time tourism crowding stress analysis scenario of visitors’ arrival at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal. The results show the proposed algorithm’s feasibility to determine the PCC of complex urban fabrics zones and its application as an initial reference value for the evaluation of real-time crowding stress, namely in simulations for assessing overtourism scenarios, both in public open spaces as in highly constrained urban fabrics.

AbstractBuilding information modelling (BIM) has ushered in the era of symbolic building representation: building elements and spaces are described not by graphical elements but by discrete symbols, each with properties and relations that explicitly integrate all information. Digital twinning promises even more: a digital replica in complete sync with the building and its behaviour. Such technologies have obvious appeal for circularity because they accommodate the rich information it requires and link circularity goals to other activities in AECO (architecture, engineering, construction and operation of buildings).Present implementations of BIM may fall short of the promise, and digital twinning may be hard to achieve, but they remain crucial not only for circularity but for all AECO disciplines. To realise the potential of such representations, information should be treated not as a product of integration but as the integrator of all activities. Similarly, digitalisation should be at the core of business models and deployment plans, not an additional or even optional layer at a high cost. This calls for a coherent approach that includes the full capture of building information, supports the detailed exploration of circular operations, uses the results to constrain decisions and actions and does so throughout the life cycle.

AbstractSince the early 1990s, virtual models have been used in production planning to digitally support production lines before beginning physical construction. These digital models, commonly referred to as “digital twins”, are currently primarily used for virtual commissioning. Despite being first used decades ago, digital twins are still not established in production planning on a global scale. The benefits of developing and testing a planned system in a virtual model are often not fully capitalized. While this can be partially explained by the technological challenges of designing accurate virtual models, we argue that the current processes for production planning are another important factor that hinder the widespread use of digital twins. In this paper, we summarize and analyze each step and the involved participants in a typical production planning workflow. Based on this analysis, we discuss how current practices conflict with the goal of incorporating virtual models into the established work environment. Then, we derive concrete recommendations of how a production process can be adjusted to allow easier digital twinning, showing how comparatively few changes could make virtual models significantly easier to apply.
