Повний текст джерелаRevealing the structure of fault zones provides insights required to assess seismic hazards. Reflection imaging methods, in particular migration, are commonly used to image the subsurface. An accurate velocity model is often needed to properly locate the reflectors in depth.Imaging fault zones is challenging due to the complex distribution of velocity. Also, most reflection techniques image fault zones indirectly from the discontinuity of geological layers. Wave diffraction by small-scale heterogeneities, such as cracks and fractures is generally neglected.In this thesis, we propose a matrix imaging approach for geophysical exploration that handles the velocity variation in the crust and allows to resolve heterogeneities of the order of the wavelength throughout the fault zone.The reflection matrix approach is inspired from previous studies in ultrasound and optical imaging of complex media. First, ambient noise cross-correlations are used to retrieve the reflection matrix associated with a dense array of geophones. The body wave components of this matrix contains all the information available on the medium. Second, the presented approach does not require a detailed velocity model of the subsurface. A set of matrix operation is applied to compensate for the mismatch between the actual wave velocity model and its approximate model.In a first application, we use ambient noise records in the frequency band [10 20] Hz from a dense array in order image the San Jacinto Fault, California, at small scale with an horizontal resolution of 80 m. ZZ cross-correlations are computed and arranged as 2D matrix. By applying time delays, the response matrix is projected to depth, using a homogeneous velocity model. A focused reflection matrix is obtained, that contains the impulse response between virtual sources and receivers at depth. From this matrix, the image of the medium is built and the resolution of the image can be quantified.Variations between the considered model and the reality result in phase distortions, i.e aberrations, that have detrimental effects on the image of the medium.We develop an aberration correction process that allows to compensate for these distortions by introducing a novel operator, the distortion matrix. 3D images of the first 4 km of the crust are retrieved. These images reveal the backscattered intensity generated by the heterogeneities in the medium. The location and reflectivity of scatterers are retrieved with a resolution 8 times better than the one in free space. Differences in the scattering between the Northwest and the Southeast of the fault were reported with an intense localized damage zone in the Southeast.In a second application, we image the large scale structure of North Anatolian Fault using [0.1 0.5] Hz horizontal cross-correlations computed between 73 pairs of stations. A multi-layered velocity model is considered. A local correction of the phase distortions is performed. The scattering structure of the crust and the upper mantle is revealed. Differences in the Moho depth are reported, with a step below the northern branch. Strong scattering is observed in the region lying along the northern strand of the fault, coinciding with the limit of the lithospheric blocks. The scattering in the North extends to 60 km depth, suggesting a shear zone that penetrates in the upper mantle beneath the northern strand. The scattering also reveals the deep structure of the main geological blocks.In the last part of this thesis, we propose an approach that paves the route towards a 3D passive tomography of the body wave velocity. Finally, all the presented applications confirm the efficiency of the reflection matrix approach in revealing the structure of the subsurface. It provides new insights into the scattering distribution in the Earth. It can be applied to any scale, scattering regime, and frequency bandwith, if the spatial sampling of the geophones' array satisfies the Nyquist criterion

The multiple scattering process is described by a multiple scattering formalism developed as part of modal theories. In the first and second chapters, the scattering by a cluster of a few scatterers and by an infinite periodic linear array of scatterers is studied from the resonant point of view. Next, in the third chapter, the propagation of waves in a two-dimensional periodic array is analysed. To calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients, the approach consists in considering the two-dimensional array as a periodic series of infinite periodic linear arrays. This approach is also used in the last chapter to validate an effective medium theory, originally developed for purely random multiple scattering media ; the theory is validated by adapting it to random distributions of infinite periodic linear arrays, i. Повний текст джерелаThe use of the license-free 60-GHz frequency band will allow multi-Gb/s data transmission over short distances. The design of these wireless communication systems strongly depends on the propagation channel. The objective of the thesis focuses on the multidimensionnal channel characterization to quantify at the end the contribution of multi-antenna techniques (MIMO) on the performance of communication. A wideband mm-W frequency channel sounder was developed and has allowed extensive indoor channel measurements. In order to compare experimental results with theoretical value, the ray tracing tool was improved. Taking into account the diffraction that takes place at the top of a rectangular obstacle, a new method based on a hybrid uniform theory of diffraction-physical optics has been proposed and validated. Experimental results had also allowed to quantify the diffuse parameters for materials usually found in indoor environments. It was shown that introducing the contribution of diffuse scattering improves the accuracy of the RT tool unlike what it can be found in the literature where an average diffuse scattering parameter is proposed for a given environment. Finally, based on the channel measurements, the performance of IEEE 802.15.3c MIMO-OFDM systems was performed and the results show that the use of antennas array at both the transmitter and receiver side could increase both the throughput by a factor of 3.7 and the communication distance by 1 meter

Повний текст джерелаFuturistic projects such as nuclear fusion power generation, or interstellar navigation by solar sails, require the use of a light source of extreme brightness. In order to increase the brightness of laser sources, my thesis work focused on the coherent beam combination of laser arrays. They led to the development of a new compact control process for the synthetic wavefront formed by the laser beam array. This process makes it possible to tailor the intensity pattern of the far field and thus control the angular distribution of energy emitted by the laser beam array. The process developed uses a phase/amplitude converter module with an integrated diffuser element. A method of measuring the transfer matrix of an optical system has been developed to characterize this field converter module. At any time, the synthetic wavefront is estimated by a phase recovery loop based on an alternating projections algorithm. This approximate calculation makes it possible to gradually adjust the phase relationships of the laser beam array to the desired arbitrary phase set. The process allows the control of a synthetic wavefront in less than 10 phase corrections, almost independently of the number of laser beams to be controlled. It is resistant to environmental defects and independent of the initial phase set. I demonstrated the compactness of the system studied by analyzing and controlling a 4 cm large synthetic pupil, composed of 16 beams, using an analysis module measuring only 30 cm. I also experimentally showed the control of the network phases of 16 to 100 laser beams with residual errors of λ/30 and λ/20 rms respectively. The capabilities of this method can be extended to control the higher Zernike orders of the synthetic wavefront, or more generally to directly measure the wavefront of coherent radiation

Повний текст джерелаImproving the performance of diffraction based imaging systems constitutes a major issue in both acoustic and electromagnetic scattering. To solve this problem, two main approaches can be explored. The first one consists in improving the inversion algorithms used in diffraction based imaging. However, while this approach generally leads to a significant improvement of the performance of the imaging system, it remains limited by the initial amount of information available within the measurements. The second one consists in improving the measurement system in order to maximize the amount of information within the experimental data. This approach does require a quantitative mean of measuring the amount of information available. In estimation problems, the {appraisal of the} performance of the system is often used for that purpose. In this Ph.D. thesis, we use the Cramer Rao bound to assess the performance of the imaging system. In fact, this quantity has the advantage of providing an assessment which is independent from the inversion algorithm used. Two main analysis are discussed in this thesis. The first analysis explores the influence on the system's performance, of several experimental conditions such as the antennas positions, the radiation pattern of the source, the properties of the background medium, etc. Two classes of objects are considered: 2D homogeneous circular cylindrical objects and 2D cylindrical objects with defect. The second analysis studies the performance of an estimator based on Born approximation with the Cramer Rao Bound as reference. The aim of this second analysis is to showcase other possible applications for the Cramer Rao Bound

Повний текст джерелаWe study the electromagnetic diffraction by gratings and random rough surfaces. The C-method is an exact method developed for this aim. It is based on Maxwell’s equations under covariant form written in a nonorthogonal coordinate system. The C-method leads to an eigenvalue problem, the solution of which gives the diffracted field.We focus on the numerical aspect of the C-method, trying to develop an efficient application of this exact method. For gratings, we have developed a new version of C-method which leads to a differential system with initial conditions. This new version of C-method can be used to study multilayer gratings with homogeneous medium.We implemented high performance algorithms to the original versions of C-method. Especially, we have developed a specifically designed parallel QR algorithm for the C- method and spectral projection method to solve the eigenvalue problem more efficiently. Experiments have shown that the computation time can be reduced significantly

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis deals with several problems of scattering theory in the semi-classical limit, that is to say, with properties of the generalised eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator at high frequencies. The generalised eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean space, with a compactly supported smooth potential, may always be written as the sum of an incoming wave and an outgoing wave, plus a term which is negligible at infinity. The scattering matrix relates the incoming part with the outgoing part. The first part of this work deals with the spectrum of the scattering matrix. We show an equidistribution result for the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix, under the hypothesis that the sets of fixed points of some maps defined from the classical dynamics has measure zero. This result was previously known under the additional assumption that the classical dynamics has an empty trapped set.A second part of this work deals with the distorted plane waves, which are a particular family of generalized eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator, which can be written as the sum of a plane wave and a purely outgoing part. We make the hypothesis that the underlying classical dynamics has a hyperbolic trapped set, and that a certain topological pressure is negative. Under these assumptions, we obtain in the semiclassical limit a precise description of distorted plane waves as a convergent sum of Lagrangian states. In particular, we can deduce from this the semiclassical measure associated to distorted plane waves. If we furthermore assume that the manifold has non-positive curvature, and that the potential is zero, these Lagrangian states project on the base manifold without caustics. We deduce from this results on the C^l norms and on the nodal sets of distorted plane waves. We also obtain a lower bound on the number of nodal domains of the sum of two distorted plane waves with close enough incoming directions , for a small generic perturbation of a metric of negative curvature satisfying the topological pressure assumption

Повний текст джерелаThe first part of this document introduces a simple model based on the resolution of the Lagrangian equations of motion termed “Choppy Wave Model”. It takes into account the hydrodynamic nonlinearities of the surface and makes possible to establish its complete statistical properties. The obtained results emphasize the nongaussian aspect of the ocean surface and the importance of the undressed spectrum. Some samples of nonlinear seas illustrate the hydrodynamic modulation of short waves by the long ones. In the second part, the impact of sea surface nonlinearities on the scattering process is quantified. The obtained results correct the bias due to the Gaussian assumption in meteooceanic parameters estimation. A new calculation method for the Kirchhoff integral based on fast radial convolutions is also introduced. Finally, the foam impact on the scattering process in micro-waves is estimated and is shown to become significant at strong winds and mainly in HH polarization

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis manuscript is devoted to the study of the seismic and ultrasonic wave propagation in complex media. Two methods are proposed to take advantage of the phase information contained in diffuse waves. 1) Weak localization of seismic waves is observed on a volcano (Auvergne). This field experiment demonstrates the presence of multiple scattering in coda waves, and allows the direct measurement of the transport mean free path of the sub-surface that quantifies the heterogeneities. 2) A passive imaging technique is also proposed : it is based on the correlation of diffuse field or noise, a correlation that yield the elastic or acoustic Green function between passive sensors as if one of them was a source. Initially applied to ultrasonic cavities, this technique is generalized to open scattering media. A physical interpretation based on a Time-Reversal analogyis proposed. The time symmetry of the correlations is studied, with means of numerical simulations, seismic experiment in Alaska, and ultrasonic experiment in the lab using a small medium ana logo us to the Earth's crust. The role of scattering and source position is emphasized. The passive imaging technique is used to perform the tomography of a layered medium, to image of interfaces and localized reflectors. Ln the end this technique is applied to Lunar seismic noise records, acquiered by four geophones emplaced on the Moon during Apollo 17 mission (1972). This last observation demonstrates the feasibility of correlating the noise to image the subsurface on other planets than the Earth which should provide a novel avenue for future extraterrestrial exploration missions

Повний текст джерелаWe study reaction-diffusion fronts in presence of a localized defect. We consider bistable and monostable nonlinearities for which exact solutions exist in the homogeneous case. The partial differential equation is solved numerically and the solution is fitted using these exact solutions. We also develop a collective coordinate analysis for the position and width of a front, based on balance laws. For both non linearities, the approximate analysis agrees well with the numerical solution. We cab predict the pinning of the front in the bistable case. The sudy reveals qualitative differences between the two nonlinearities. It shows the importance of the characteristic lenghts of the defect and the front. Finally it provides a reduced model, useful for control theory or for the determination of parameters from time-series

In the first chapter we study the linear transport-diffusion equation with a diffusion coefficient given by a small positive parameter. We study the controllability for the transport equation and the convergence of the solutions of the transport-diffusion equation when the diffusion goes to zero. We deduce some bound for the cost of the approximate controllability for the transport diffusion equation when the diffusion goes to zero. In the second chapter we consider a transmission wave equation in two embedded domains in Rn, where the speed is a1 > 0 in the inner domain and a2 > 0 in the outer domain. We prove a global Carleman inequality for this problem under some convexity hypothesis for the inner domain, and assuming a2 < a1. As a consequence of this inequality, we obtain uniqueness and Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem of retrieving a stationary potential for the wave equation with Dirichlet data and discontinuous principal coefficient from a single time-dependent Neumann boundary measurement

Il est alors nécessaire d'expliciter les évolutions microscopiques impliquées dans le processus de génération. Ainsi, une méthode semi-analytique basée sur un modèle à deux températures 3D est développée dans la première partie de ce mémoire afin de décrire les phénomènes électroniques. En se propageant, l'onde acoustique divergente module l'indice optique en temps et en espace par couplage élasto-optique. La propagation de la lumière est alors perturbée, et sa mesure permet de caractériser la propagation acoustique. Dans la seconde partie de ce mémoire, l'interaction 3D de l'impulsion laser gaussienne avec le champ acoustique diffracté est donc modélisée.

Повний текст джерелаComplex wave systems can be classified in two categories, whatever the type of wave equation involved. When complexity is induced by the geometry of boundaries one speaks of Wave Chaos. In the case of heterogeneous media complexity is due to multiple scattering. Microwave 2D cavities are ideal model systems to investigate both regimes on a macroscopic scale. In the Wave Chaos regime, a first experimental study of a rectangular cavity perturbed by a point-like metallic defect. Using a semiclassical approach based on periodic orbits, we provide evidence for the contributions of diffractive orbits in the length spectrum. Through the use of open strongly disordered dielectric media, the observation of 2D localized modes, in the sense of Anderson, is performed. We give details about the experimental setup and protocol to produce the spatial pattern of a localized mode. We experimentally demonstrate that the spectral widths of localized modes, related to leakage at the boundary, exponentially decrease with the system size. We also show that this decrease is controlled by the largest localization lengths
