Concepts stand at the centre of human cognition. We use concepts in categorizing objects and events in the world, in reasoning and action, and in social interaction. It is therefore not surprising that the study of concepts constitutes a central area of research in philosophy and psychology. Since the 1970s, psychologists have carried out intriguing experiments testing the role of concepts in categorizing and reasoning, and have found a great deal of variation in categorization behaviour across individuals and cultures. During the same period, philosophers of language and mind did important work on the semantic properties of concepts, and on how concepts are related to linguistic meaning and linguistic communication. An important motivation behind this was the idea that concepts must be shared, across individuals and cultures. However, there was little interaction between these two research programs until recently. With the dawn of experimental philosophy, the proposal that the experimental data from psychology lacks relevance to semantics is increasingly difficult to defend. Moreover, in the last decade, philosophers have approached questions about the tension between conceptual variation and shared concepts in communication from a new perspective: that of ameliorating concepts for theoretical or for social and political purposes. The volume brings together leading psychologists and philosophers working on concepts who come from these different research traditions.

The textbook contains 18 chapters based on challenging scenarios involving variety of diseases and organ dysfunctions. Each chapter contains several “Learning Points”, “Clinical Tips” and “Evidence Base” boxes embedded in the text with the aim to promote memory and stimulate learning. These run alongside an “Expert Commentary” written by an international group of experts in the field, to give practical advice of how they approach these difficult situations. This article examines potential applications of the concept of cause to some central ethical concepts, views, and problems. In particular, it discusses the role of causation in the family of views known as consequentialism, the distinction between killing and letting die, the doctrine of double effect, and the concept of moral responsibility. The article aims to examine the extent to which an appeal to the concept of cause contributes to elucidating moral notions or to increasing the plausibility of moral views. Something that makes this task interestingly complex is the fact that the notion of causation itself is controversial and difficult to pin down. As a result, in some cases the success of its use in moral theory hinges on how certain debates about causation are resolved.

It explains that although Butler does not propose a wholeness of power, her selective reading of Lacan—her rejection of the real and his notion of the unconscious, her holding on to the language of recognition, and her use of his notion of the ego—generates a wholeness of power, which makes it difficult to envision agency within her theoretical framework. It explains that the idea of the (feminist) political subject-in-outline embraces limit concepts and the concept of the unconscious, and aims at a clear break with the language of recognition and the politics of the ego.
