The way we perceive the urban environment affects the choices we make and therefore our behavior. This fact has an important effect when we navigate a city. How urban spaces are laid out will influence our decisions and have repercussions in our travel choices. There is therefore a connection between urban spatial experience and transportation systems. With a large number of cities considering transit oriented development (TOD) - an urban model whose goal is to align urban development to public transportation patterns by creating walkable, mixed and diverse neighborhoods - as the primary planning solution to solve their accessibility problems, the connection between the urban image and the transit system is crucial. If planners want to bring people closer to transit systems and increase ridership, they will need to improve the perception people have about the system and further construct a modified set of travel preferences. Both urban space and the process of navigation are, in general, composed linear features related to movement (paths) and point features that define origins and destinations (nodes). Within the different types of nodal elements, open spaces have a particular condition; their openness allow people to perceive a larger portion of their surroundings, easing the process of wayfinding and enhancing the sense of place, which is highly valuable for the construction of true communities. This thesis explores the role of open spaces, not only as attractive urban amenities and recreational spaces, but as organizing elements of the territory and anchors for the transit system arrival points. I explore Guadalajara, Mexico, a city with an important central network of open spaces. The city is currently making a significant investment in transit and is looking towards TOD for its planning solutions. I intend to use Guadalajara as a mean to show how open public spaces can be used as primary elements to structure transit systems and to enhance the creation of place around stations.

The issues infested in urban slum communities are many, of which I had no problem indentifying a dilemma specific to my interests in landscape architecture and socially equitable places. However, sustainable solutions specific to these dynamic urban forms and communities are unfamiliar academic territory. Extreme levels of poverty fostered in these communities cause deficiencies in a child’s development, who are often without access to a formal, structured education system (UNDP, 1999). Public spaces are particularly stimulating environments for youth learning and development, but most urban environments in shanty towns host a milieu of violence and crime, making most public streets and vacant lots unsafe. These conditions are ripe for visionary designers to intervene, improving the physical aspects of urban public spaces and specifically bettering the quality of life for children living in these communities. Answering this question required literature research and precedent studies, which was important for developing a thorough understanding of developmental theory as it relates to socio-economically disadvantaged children. By focusing my studies on public spaces in the neighborhood Vistas del Cerro Grande in Chihuahua, México, I began to understand the cultural idiosyncrasies specific to people living in urban shantytowns. Data collected from the neighborhood via surveys, interviews, community meetings, and an auto-ethnographic video study with fifth and sixth grade students provided an introduction to the community and the larger themes and objectives for future public space design. Visiting comparable communities in México City, México deepened my understanding as I was able to observe the daily lives of México City residents with diverse socio-economic statuses, hear their individual perspectives on the history and cultures, and relate to their frustrations with current political, economic, and societal systems. The methodologies described above culminated in a design typology specific to Vistas del Cerro Grande, consisting of public streets, pedestrian access ways, plazas, and vacant lots. These types form the backbone of my research report, which represents an evidence-based design palette of purpose-oriented amenities for positive childhood development in shanty town public spaces. The typology caters to the specific needs of the Vistas del Cerro Grande community, as identified in the research.

Urban centres and cities are par excellence representations of complexity of human landscapes and environments. In the context of a rapid urban growth and a technologic centred world, these places are the stage for dynamic changes, and reveal a heterogenic spatial, human and ecologic composition in both hemispheres of the World. Having this complex space in mind, the present dissertation intended to frame the field of action of landscape architecture in a specific type of urban settlement - the suburban one, in a way of establishing good quality public spaces while combining social/cultural and ecological concerns. The case study was the “satellite” city of Agualva-Cacém, located between Lisbon and Sintra - an important Portuguese city for its cultural landmarks and ecological context. In this sense, an analysis of the concept of “quality” in the outdoor space was made, as well as a reflection upon good design practices for public parks and urban streets. Secondly, design strategies in the case of Agualva-Cacém were proposed, considering environmental and social concerns: in one hand, to contribute to a more sustainable management of water, soil and to contribute to the green infrastructure of Agualva-Cacém; in another hand, to change the image of the city and improve the quality of life within a contemporary urban environment characterized by spatial fragmentation, dependency on the use of the automobile and daily pendular movements of people. This was achieved through the proposal of requalification of urban spaces confined in a delimitated strategic axis, composed by an avenue and two different public parks. The three public spaces of this axis are then interconnected, forming a continuous system of water circulation, green continuity, soft mobility and public spaces

Kessler’s 1893 parks and boulevards system was established to spur investment. The 1893 Report shaped the present city pattern and form of Downtown Kansas City by encouraging decentralized city and metropolitan growth. Today’s system discourages pedestrian mobility and accessibility through the design and context of the public spaces. Since walkability contributes to successful public spaces, walking for transportation to encourage active use could improve today’s open-space system. To address the present condition facing the system, the report analyzes the morphology of Kessler’s parks and boulevards system within the 2010 Greater Downtown Area Plan boundary. For methods, stakeholder notes and professional interviews explain the planning process behind the 2011-2012 KCDC project to revitalize public space. The stakeholder notes and professional interviews assess the context of the Kansas City Design Center’s vision to revitalize Kessler’s parks and boulevards system. Using the StreetSmartTM walkability model, the design and context of public space can help revitalize Kessler’s 1893 system and today’s park system. The model can be used to measure and prioritize investment by assessesing the pedestrian mobility and accessibility of public spaces. The implication of the report is that if the design and context of public spaces addresses the public interest and walkability, public spaces will become connected, diverse, market-competitive, and actively used. Short-term pedestrian amenities and long-term infrastructure improvements provide different ways to prioritize pedestrian mobility and accessibility to create a walkable downtown, one of the goals of the Greater Downtown Area Plan.

Within a world more and more urbanised, which live a crisis partially characterised by exclusions, segregation, and acceleration of mobility (T. Paquot, 2012). The public space is being sacrified, the quality of life degraded, the way of life is energy consuming, and polluting. Could the eco-cities be considered as the best alternatives for all the problems? The return to the historic city like it was desired C.sitte, could it constitute a solution for tomorrow? What about the Medina of Constantine, sometimes, perceived as none city? What about its heritage? Our questioning is concerned about the role that could play the public spaces in the revalorisation of the built heritage and to make it a place of life, sustainable, and appreciated. Within that context, the ancient city of Constantine with its history, its morphology and its urban evolution, represent the heart of our research, which is based in comparative approach with the eco-neighbourhood in Freibourg-in-brisgau wich serves as a reference to lead this work. Hence, the public spaces are in the centre of our work, in order to, put in value the built heritage, and to enhance the quality of life of inhabitants, and the users, far from the objectives of just making part of heritage. This doctoral thesis seek to reveal that the medina is a good lesson, and a good alternative to the city of today, particularly when it is met with the sustainable city. We choose to integrate the sustainable development to the medina through a variety of subjects : the accessibility, the mobility, the density, the proximity of amenities, the waste management, the elements of urban ambiance that participate in the fabrication of the public space, therefore urban landscapes. In order to confirm the hypothesis that the Medina have a good bases to be a sustainable neighbourhood, we widen our research by integrating architectural and social analysis focusing in many subjects, the diversity of habitat, the citizen participation, the mixed. This through observation and the go along as a method of analysis of users, uses, practices that participate in the attractively and the maintenance of life within public spaces. In sum, this thesis describes two experiences which are not similar, but, tightly linked to the point of having more convergence rather than divergence. Although, the medina still far from performance in terms of sustainability in regards to Vauban, the comparison offer us to conclude that a democratic approach play an important role in the fabrication of public space and its capacity to offer a better quality of life for inhabitants. In the end, it underline the elements to follow or to avoid for the success of a project of revalorisation of the medina through its public spaces, and the conception of eco-neighbourhood which, could last as long as the medina of Constantine

The planning, structure and shape of our urban environments affects our mindsets and perception of safety. The fear of being exposed to crimes causes many, especially women, to avoid certain public places completely. This proves the necessity of increasing and improving the mobility and safety for women in public spaces. This is the topic of this project, and the focus is on public toilets. The issue is relevant and it is based on the fact that cities traditionally have provided more toilets adapted to men (such as urinals), and existing toilets rarely being designed and equipped to fit the needs of women, girls and parents of young children. The purpose of this project is to improve the availability, design and experience of public restrooms. How can one, using design, improve the public space to feel more safe and accessible for men and women on equal terms.

This research explores spaces for enchantment and the unknown, exploring our relationship to fairy-tales and alternative ways of dreaming that break from a modern worldview, using complexity thinking as lens. I conducted extra-mural group work with two groups of adolescents from disadvantaged backgrounds. I considered the world young people receive at a metaphysical level; the world they dream of, connect to and enact. My thesis is based on the premise that we must act towards a ‘sustainable unknown development’ that goes beyond modern deadly homogenisation. The research objectives were as follows: Firstly, to explore the relationship between dreams (about the future) and a sustainable future. Secondly, to reflect, based on the group’s holding-space, on our relationship to dreams. Thirdly, to reflect on possible alternative ways of approaching the unknown and enacting enchantment to create change. Fourthly, to explore the importance of imagination and creativity with regards to the above. I review literature pertaining to the affects of the modern paradigm, specifically in its fairy tale blueprinting form, on our world. I argue that this paradigm is currently dangerous to the earth as a living system; causing the oppression and abandonment of nature, the feminine, children and our imagination. Alternative ways such as states of ‘interbeing’, polycentric thinking, and the experience of thresholds and heterotopian spaces where differences meet, are considered. The importance of personal experience and imagination in building resilience and meaning in the unknown are emphasised. My research uses a practical design of ‘enchantment methodology’. Methodologically it tries to tackle some ontological questions, considering different approaches in which negotiation is possible at a metaphysical level. My findings were that although alternative approaches do exist they cannot be generalised in a modern thinking way. Beyond the modern numbness and the tantrums of breaking away from its devastating divides, is the potential of inner wisdom found in our own hearts. Recommendations are that more holding spaces are created to promote an alternative relationship to the unknown to nurture a sense of enchantment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Civic spaces are important nodes of community life. Especially in an urban context, civic spaces provide a necessary place that people can gather for events, meet others, and experience openness in an otherwise crowded environment. However, not all civic spaces are successful in providing these opportunities to city dwellers. Washington Square in Kansas City, Missouri is one such civic space that is currently underused and unsuccessful. Traditional methods of analyzing public spaces can be supplemented by a social media-based methodology of analysis. Analyzing social media posts submitted within the geographic boundaries of a civic space offers rich insights into the public perception and usage of these places. The application of a social media-based methodology to Washington Square results in the development of solutions for addressing this space’s dilemmas and Kansas City’s goals for the area. METHODS: Instagram and Twitter posts are collected within the geographic boundaries of Washington Square and three other civic spaces—which have been identified as exhibiting characteristics of Kansas City’s goals for Washington Square. Using thematic coding, geographic analysis, and textual analysis, these posts are analyzed to discover how people are using and perceiving these civic spaces. This data is synthesized to create solutions for the redevelopment of Washington Square. FINDINGS & CONCLUSION: This research demonstrates that a social media-based analysis can effectively inform planners and designers of the ways in which people use and perceive civic spaces. The application of this methodology to Washington Square has led to the creation of nine solutions. These solutions aim to improve Washington Square’s functionality, its identity, and its interaction with the surrounding urban environment.

This thesis is about Porto Alegre during the years of 1820 – 1890. Its objective is to analize the transformations and characteristics of its urban space from the reading and crossing of the descriptions of the city contained in the reports of foreing travelers. It is a study that relies on diaries, unofficial sources little used in the researches from architects and planners about the capital, to value them as a possible contribution to the study of the city. In this sense the research seeks alternative sources to the used most often as the historical cartography and the official documents, and also to present that these other sources are important and should be more explored by urban studies. Its use would enable a more intimate approach to the daily life of the city, with its spaces and the feelings they convey. Are sought in the writings of travelers information about Porto Alegre regarding locational aspects (implantation, suburbs, urban network/streets and general appearance of the whole), its public services and urban infrastructure (roads, water supply, sewerage, urban sanitation, transportation, sidewalks, lighting, policing, landfill), its equipment and public places (hospitals, educational institutions, religious temples, wharf and customhouse, quarters and buildings of military nature, theaters, cemeteries, prisons, markets, administrative buildings, sports and recreation, squares and parks) and other characteristics not covered into the above categories (cluster of residential architecture, population, etc.). Were selected six travelers as sources to support the research, dispersed with certain regularity throughout the seventy years studied. They are: Auguste Saint-Hilaire, Arsène Isabelle, Robert Avé-Lallemant, Oscar Canstatt, Wilhelm Breitenbach and Moritz Schanz.

The aim of this thesis is to observe the evolution of the specific knowledge and practices of the City of Paris’ technical services and this, through the example of an ambitious Parisian urban development project called “Réinventons nos places”. The study focuses on the professional activities performed in the development of three public squares (Place des Fêtes, Place de la Nation, and Place de la Bastille), with the purpose to see how the specialists adapted themselves to the various challenges offered by the City council (for instance, to take into account : the Gender in the development of a public space, digital objects, innovation in project management and in the way of managing space)... To examine this process “in a work situation” will lead us, for example, to describe the way these specialists will assimilate new knowledge and know-how in this particular context. Ultimately, the City Council, when progressively adapting the work and the work organization of the various actors, as well as the project goawls themselves, seems to be aiming at the creation of a “new model”, a new way of developing public spaces. We are going to examine the first step within this new way, in which engineers and architects have to reconsider their habits in order to meet new demands – they do this, notably, by making still unknown objects and by fitting them into both a specific area and a background they know well : Paris’ public spaces

The purpose is to raise the institute with a focus on relaxation and re creativity, in which patients can interact with each other in spaces and common areas, promoting that the patient does not stay in the rooms or in the care areas for a long time, this is to avoid any possible contagion or increase in the disease. The exchange, coexistence, mutual respect and social development provide the patient with a positive environment for a quick recovery, without losing the main thing that is required in the spaces reserved for medical treatment. Regarding the research, since it is a type of health, it has been chosen to take models of projects that integrate nature with technical functioning, which have all the medical services required to be able to give the necessary treatment to patients and projects. recreational activities that have been extremely important at the time of developing the project and that stimulate recovery. To decide the location of the project, a very detailed analysis of the current demand was made, choosing a piece of land located in the Peruvian Guard avenue with a crossing with the Vesta Passage in the district of Chorrillos. The land is located in a strategic area, fast access from Lima North, Lima downtown and Lima South to receive the people who need it.

This dissertation, which is based on qualitative and humanistic perspectives, aims at contributing with knowledge within the frame of mobility and public spaces, for the purpose of generating guidelines which will allow promoting an urban lifestyle focused on the integration amongst a number of motorized as well as non-motorized public transportation modes. Within the first part of the dissertation, good urban practices are evidenced where the insertion of massive transport systems have benefited mobility as well as favored the quality improvement of public spaces. Therefore, the city has become an urban benchmark. The construction of the conceptual framework allowed validating the proposed research hypothesis: “The impact of the subway system insertion as a good practice for transportation planning is minimized if diversity, accessibility and qualification of its public spaces are not considered, as indicators for mobility planning”. In the city of the Maracaibo municipality, with a population of 1.450,665 inhabitants, and a 2 surface area of 393 Km , it is evidenced increased deterioration of the urban transport system in recent years, as unsatisfied demands have been piling up as a consequence of the limitations, as well as internal and external service circumstances, thus preventing provident and adequate city planning. As a result, mobility becomes unsustainable, as it is intended for automobiles. The insertion of the subway system into the city currently proves to be a scenario which evidences disarticulation between desirable public space intervention policies and development models for means of transport which facilitate mobility. By taking these problems as a starting point, the second part of this research develops a situational diagnose for the Sabaneta Corridor, in which the first line of the Maracaibo subway system (Venezuela) is inserted. A SWOT matrix allows making policies, as well as devising strategies and actions for contributing to mobility planning whilst encouraging, in this manner, both accessible and efficient use patterns. Finally, a proposal is presented for three stations, which summarizes guidelines for “sustainable” urban mobility planning across six vertices: a) reconditioning of the existing urban pedestrian walkways, b) re-organization of the urban road system –cycle lanes-, c) Nodes and intermodal transport units, d) Redevelopment of urban idle spaces into public spaces –two-level connectivity-, e) street furniture, and f) art as an integration element for means of transport.
