The accurate determination of malingering relies on the use of validated and clinically relevant assessment measures. Simulation design is the most often-used research design to accomplish this. However, its external validity is sometimes questioned. The goal of the thesis was to systematically evaluate these major elements: situation, incentives, and coaching. The situation in simulation studies can vary from relevant (academic failure in a college population) to irrelevant (capital murder) for the samples being studied. Incentives refer to the external motivation given to improve simulators' performance and can be positive (extra credit and monetary reward) or negative (extra time and effort). Finally, coaching refers to whether the participant receives any information on detection strategies that are designed to identify feigners. Using a large undergraduate sample in a factorial design, results indicate that a scenario familiar to the participants generally improved the believability of their responses. Coaching also improved the ability to feign convincingly, while incentive type was not associated with any change in scores. The implications of these findings for future research designs and the connection to practice are discussed.

The author's intention in presenting this thesis is to develop new and simple to apply analytic methods to robustly estimate and compare Willingness to Pay (WTP) estimates and particularly to develop tests for statistical significance in these differences by estimating sampling variance appropriate to the method, taking into account the correlation between estimates incorporating the CV methods and or sampling designs. In particular I am interested in testing differences in estimated valuation statistics, such as Median WTP and thus overcoming aspects of non independence in the welfare estimates due to the design of the survey methodology e.g. in Double Bounded Dichotomous choices the estimate of the Double Bounded welfare estimate is not independent of the Single Bounded estimate because of the nature of the DB method. The use of replication here refers specifically to resampling methods that are used to provide variances of differences by simulating the sampling distribution by randomly resampling and thus quantifying the sampling variation. Here 3 of the 4 papers presented use either the bootstrap or jac1dmife method to produce the sampling variation of difference. The fourth paper uses a split sample approach to test individual WTP differences with a pooled Benefit Transfer estimate. The thesis presents four papers from 4 separate stated preference studies using different Contingent Valuation question formats which are used to evaluate WTP for: Improvement to Animal Welfare, Child safety on farms, Values of Forest recreation and Renewable Electricity generation in Chile. The theme of the thesis is to test for differences in estimates in WTP estimates between various within sample and across samples designs. These tests are used in 2 papers to test for the occurrences of inconsistency between SB and DB estimates and to test for anchoring of the second bid in relation to the level of the first bid offered amount in DBDC and thus to test for respondent behavioural effects such as Learning on inconsistency and anchoring.

The ongoing sustainability crisis offer numerous, multifaced societal challenges as a result of the ongoing degradation of socio-ecological systems by human activity causing massive ecological damage and human suffering. Overcoming these difficulties begs for the rapid transition of society towards sustainability. This desire for urgent action has been hindered by the lack of coordinated global leadership focused on addressing these challenges and implementing a transition towards a sustainable future. The sustainability crisis and its manifestations, which include for example climate change, air and water pollution, deforestation and social segregation, are interconnected and volatile issues whose parts influence and impact each other causing the crisis to worsen. The earth system is pushed towards tipping points from beyond which it may become impossible to maintain the human civilization. The failure of leadership to address the wicked nature of these crises means humanity has been left ill-equipped to deal with the complex problems of sustainability.  This thesis considers the role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in overcoming these issues and operating as a leverage point towards sustainability. It focuses on investigating how the development of sustainability leadership education in Higher Education can contribute to addressing the sustainability crisis. It looks at the role that educators can play in designing learning environments that ensure leaders and leadership capable of addressing wicked problems posed by global unsustainability. The aim of this research is to investigate what educators should consider when designing learning environments that promote the qualities needed for leading in complexity towards sustainability. It does this by examining a number of ESD programs as case studies to investigate the efficacy of those programs at creating sustainability outcomes within their students. It also undertakes a literature review to describe and articulate the unique challenges faced by sustainability leaders from a personal and professional perspective. The study is situated closely to the ongoing ESD discussion regarding competencies-based learning for sustainability and the research aims to provide some contribution to that dialogue. It does this through the investigation of competencies acquisition and the discussion of emerging areas of leadership that may hold beneficial outcomes for the development and practice of sustainability leaders.   The results of the thesis suggest a number of outcomes for consideration by educators and include a number of main findings. Firstly, educational programs can be capable of achieving the acquisition of ‘sustainability’ competencies within their students, but if these competencies are not taught within a larger sustainability contextualization, then students can fail to see the purpose of the competencies ‘for’ sustainability. Secondly, reflective practices, developed as the result of reflective pedagogies, can provide beneficial qualities in students as future sustainability leaders and require distinct pedagogical structures in order to guide reflective practices towards sustainability outcomes. Finally, a number of unique personal and professional challenges to sustainability leadership exist and need to be overcome if the domain of sustainability is to ensure the ongoing resilience and wellbeing of individuals and groups acting as sustainability leaders.   This research suggests a novel contribution to a number of areas within ESD research, including creating knowledge within the competencies discussion regarding emerging areas of study that may influence the future of defined sustainability competencies. It also highlights the need for educators to consider the role of wellbeing and resilience in current and future sustainability leaders.

Switch Mode Power Supplies are very important components in present day electronics and have continued to thrive and grow over the past 25 years. This thesis looks inside how the SMPS have evolved over the passage of years with special emphasis to the Synchronous Buck Converter. It also discusses why there is a strong potential to further the study related to designs based around a Synchronous Buck Converter for portable applications. The main objective of the thesis is to look into the controller design for minimizing size, enhancing efficiency and reliability of power converters in portable electronic equipment such as mobile phones and PDAs. The thesis aims to achieve this using a 90 nm process with an input voltage of 1.55V and an output of 1V with a power dissipation of 200mW.

The adoption of information technology as an aid to organisational efficiency and effectiveness has a long history in business and public administration, but its application to the processes of teaching and learning in education has been relatively limited. At the dawn of the new millennium this began to change, as educational institutions around the world began to experiment with new ideas for the use of information technology. This happened at the same time that commercial organisations began to realise that they themselves could &ndash
because of the availability of IT based systems &ndash
invest in educational services focused on their own needs. It was against this background that this research project set out to study how South African higher education has incorporated new learning technologies in the delivery of programmes. The study began by exploring the emerging patterns of the use of e-learning in South African higher education. This was to establish a broad understanding of how e-learning was incorporated into the core business of universities. As the study progressed interviews with both teaching and support staff provided course descriptions which were used to expose the kind of considerations that were made in designing, developing and delivering those courses. The main purpose of the study was to answer the question: what pedagogical considerations are necessary for successful course design when using e-learning? By placing the course descriptions on a continuum developed as a part of the conceptual framework in the study it was possible to analyse the course design features that emerged. The framework and its differentiated learning designs (LD1/2/3) can be used for both design and evaluation of courses and can facilitate the use of technology in enhancing teaching and learning.

The purpose of this study is to explore gender-issues by the means of extreme contrasts in functionality. The motivation behind the work comes from the structural objectification of women that is maintained through fashion and social media, and how this is an issue that mainly regards women. By morphing extreme contrasts in dress, by the means of male coded work wear, and female coded shape wear, this work explores gender related norms, ideals and statuses. Through this work, shape was decided through try-outs with garments and/or their components, with a research that was based on today’s ideals, and social media trends. Lines in garments became increasingly more important during the process, and the components of garments in the different categories too. In the result the importance of colour, material and shape regarding gender-issues in dress is highlighted, since they often convey a gender coded expression. To disrupt this inherit gender, the result demonstrates how these components can be mixed. Breaking down status in gender attributes could be used to create a more equal sphere in fashion.

The main goal of this thesis is to report patterns of perceived safety in the context of airport infrastructure, taking the airport of Bologna as reference. Many personal and environmental attributes are investigated to paint the profile of the sensitive passenger and to understand why precise factors of the transit environment are so impactful on the individual. The main analyses are based on a 2014-2015 passengers’ survey, involving almost six thousand of incoming and outgoing passengers. Other reports are used to implement and support the resource. The analysis is carried out by using a combination of Chi-square tests and binary logistic regressions. Findings shows that passengers result to be particularly affected by the perception of airport’s environment (e.g., state and maintenance of facilities, clarity and efficacy of information system, functionality of elevators and escalators), but also by the way how the passenger reaches the airport and the quality of security checks. In relation to such results, several suggestions are provided for the improvement of passenger satisfaction with safety. The attention is then focused on security checkpoints and related operations, described on a theoretical and technical ground. We present an example of how to realize a proper model of the security checks area of Bologna’s airport, with the aim to assess present performances of the system and consequences of potential variations. After a brief introduction to Arena, a widespread simulation software, the existing model is described, pointing out flaws and limitations. Such model is finally updated and changed in order to make it more reliable and more representative of the reality. Different scenarios are tested and results are compared using graphs and tables.

Algorithmic mechanism design studies the allocation of resources to selfish agents, who might behave strategically to maximize their own utilities. This thesis studies these incentive issues arsing from four different settings, that are motivated by real- life applications. We model the settings and problems by appropriately extending or generalizing classical economic models. After that we systematically analyze the auction design problems by using methods from both economic theory and computer science. The first problem is the auction design problem for selling online rich media ad- vertisement. In this market, multiple advertisers compete for a set of slots that are arranged in a line, such as a banner on a website. Each buyer desires a particular num- ber of consecutive slots and has a private per-click valuation while each slot is associated with a quality factor. Our goal is to maximize the auctioneer’s expected revenue given buyers’ consecutive demand. This is motivated by modeling buyers who may require these to display a large size ad. Three major pricing mechanisms, the Bayesian pric- ing model, the maximum revenue market equilibrium model and an envy-free solution model are studied in this setting. The second setting is for fund-raising scenarios, where a revenue target is usually specified. We are interested in designing truthful auctions that maximize the probability to achieve this revenue target, rather than in maximizing the expected revenue. We study this topic from the perspective of Bayesian auction design in digital good auctions. We present an algorithm to find the optimal truthful auction for two buyers with independent valuations and show the problem is NP-hard when the number of buyers is arbitrary or the distributions are correlated. We also investigate simple auctions in this setting and provide approximately optimal solutions. Third, we study double auction market design where the trading broker wants to maximize its total revenue by buying low from the sellers and selling high to the buyers in a Bayesian setting. For single-parameter setting, we develop a maximum mechanism for the market maker to maximize its own revenue. For the more general case where each seller’s product may be different, we consider a number of various settings in terms of constraints on supplies and demands. For each of them, we develop a polynomial time computable truthful mechanism for the market maker to achieve a revenue at least a constant factor times the revenue of any other truthful mechanism. Finally, we study the inefficiency of mixed equilibria of all-pay auctions in three different environments – combinatorial, multi-unit and single-item auctions. First, we consider item-bidding combinatorial auctions where m all-pay auctions run in parallel, one for each good. For fractionally subadditive valuations, we strengthen the upper bound by proving some structural properties of mixed Nash equilibria. Next, we design an all-pay mechanism with a randomized allocation rule for the multi-unit auction, which admits a unique, approximately efficient, pure Nash equilibrium. Finally, we analyze single-item all-pay auctions motivated by their connection to crowdsourcing contests and show tight bounds on the PoA of social welfare, revenue and maximum bid.

Successful architectural design of the biotechnology facility depends on a clear understanding of many critical issues which face the newly emerging industry. Research indicates that insight can be gained through three major areas of study. First, understanding of the biotechnology industry itself is encouraged through examination of industrial application, biotechnology phases, production processes, obstacles in biotechnology, company developmental stages, methods of company survival, organization/labor force characteristics, locational issues and regulatory issues. Second, familiarization with the biotechnology facility as a building type is provided through exploration of functional areas and the spaces which they require, beginning with research and continuing through production to final distribution of the marketed product. Finally, awareness of current viewpoints and widespread concerns which relate to the design of the biotechnology facility is provided through the examination of safety, human, flexibility, functional, operational/maintenance, master planning, security, litigation and energy conservation issues.

It is inevitable that as a person ages they will encounter different physical and cognitive impairments as well as dynamic social issues. We started this project under the assumption that autonomous driving would greatly benefit the fastest growing population in developed countries, the elderly. However, the larger question at hand was how are older drivers going to interact with future automated driving systems? It was through the qualitative research we conducted that we were able to uncover the answer to this question; older drivers are not willing to give up “control” to autonomous cars. As interaction designers, we need to define what type of interactions need to occur in these future automated driving systems, so older drivers still feel independent and in control when driving. Lawrence D. Burns, former Vice president of Research and Development at General Motors and author of Reinventing the Automobile Personal Urban Mobility for the 21st Century talks about two driving factors that will shape the future of the automobile. These factors are energy and connectivity (Burns et al., 2010). We would add a third one, which is control. If we address these three factors we might be able to bridge the gap between how we drive today and how we will drive in the future and thus create more cohesive future automated driving systems.

This study focuses on using cognitive principles in design, trying to resolve four problem areas (PA)found in the map layer panel of Umeå municipality’s webGIS. In a first step cognitive findings thatcould serve as principles for implementing design choices were identified. Four low fidelity (lo-fi)prototypes were created. The lo-fi prototypes were tested using think aloud tasks and asemi-structured interview. Six participants, three expert and three novice users were recruited.Participants’ opinions and thoughts were gathered to enable the development of a high fidelity (hi-fi)prototype. The hi-fi prototype was based both on the lo-fi test results and the identified cognitiveprinciples. The hi-fi prototype was again tested using think aloud tasks and a semi-structuredinterview. Three experts along with three novice participants were recruited. Opinions and thoughtsfrom the test were transcribed and categorized using combined deductive and inductive coding. Theresults of the analysis were used to answer our research question: does the use of cognitiveprinciples in designing the map layer panel of Umeå municipality's webGIS resolve the previouslyidentified usability issues? While two of the PAs seems to have been resolved in the new design, forthe other two there still seems to be some unresolved issues. It can be discussed if the unresolvedissues were due to lack of functionality of the prototype or inadequacy of the cognitive principles.
Denna studie har fokuserat på att använda kognitiva principer i design, för att försöka lösa de fyraproblemområden (PO) som finns i kartlagerpanelen i Umeå kommuns webGIS. Researchers often regard remanufacturing as an environmentally beneficial end-of-life option. There have been, however, few environmental measurements performed in the area. The aim of this paper is to identify general environmental pros and cons with remanufacturing. This is done through the analysis of practical examples in remanufacturing industries. Life Cycle Assessment methodology has been used for the environmental validations. The first conclusion, based on the industrial cases and the literature review, is that remanufacturing is preferable from a material resource perspective when compared with manufacturing of new products. The second conclusion is that remanufacturing is preferable from a more overarching perspective for some of the investigated cases, but it is not possible to draw any general conclusions since the companies studied are few and benefits from remanufacturing are highly context-related.

Ces roulements fonctionnent grâce à des cycles de charge et de la fréquence et de l'expérience des défis complexes tribologiques sévères. Le coût de remplacement de ces paliers est très élevé et conduit aussi à quantité importante de temps d'arrêt. Il est donc important de comprendre certains des principaux problèmes de conception et tribologiques de ces roulements. Quatre points type de roulement de l'anneau de contact de rotation a été considéré comme une base de référence pour cette étude pour démontrer les questions de contact de troncature et d'échec de la cage pour les roulements de hauteur. Un palier de contact à deux points de remplacement est proposé d'éliminer le contact troncature et de réduire la force de la cage accumulation. Les méthodes de conception et d'analyse démontré dans cette étude peuvent être facilement étendus à lacet paliers ainsi que d'autres grands roulements utilisés dans l'industrie
Large slewing ring bearings used in wind turbine are one of the important load transmitting elements of these rotating machines. These bearings operate through complex load and frequency cycles and experience severe tribological challenges. The cost of replacement of these bearings is very high and also leads to significant amount of down-time. It is therefore important to understand some of the major design and tribological issues in these bearings. Four-point contact slewing ring bearing type has been considered as a baseline for this study to demonstrate contact truncation and cage failure issues for pitch bearings. An alternate two-point contact bearing is proposed to eliminate contact truncation and reduce the cage force build-up. The design and analysis methods demonstrated in this study can be easily extended to yaw bearings as well as other large bearings used in the industry

The objective of this thesis is to investigate three design issues in experimental auctions: 1) the effects of allowing negative bids for a privately valued good, 2) the effects of introducing additional alternatives (substitutes) for the auctioned good in an endowment auction, and 3) respondent behavior in acquiring information. The thesis consists of three papers examining those issues. The first paper examines participants’ bidding behavior when negative bids are allowed for privately valued goods in an experimental auction. We focus on two questions: i) whether subjects with negative values tend to bid strategically – either overbidding or underbidding in an effort to enhancing earnings, and ii) the performance of random nth and 5th price auctions. We find that: a) WTP bids are demand revealing, b) subjects tend to underbid WTA values, c) controlling for risk attitude partially explains the bias in WTA bids, and d) negative values from random nth auctions tend to be below those from 5th price auctions. In the second paper we 1) investigate the effect of the availability of varying numbers of alternatives (substitutes) for a privately valued good on participants’ bidding behavior, and 2) identify whether the availability of additional alternatives: a) impacts the value of product information, and b) impacts the effect of new information on product valuations. We find that: a) allowing additional alternatives in a private value auction does not significantly decrease subjects’ bids, and b) the presence of additional alternatives in the auction decreases both the value and effect of product information. The third paper examines the effect of acquired information on auction participants’ bidding behavior. We focus on three questions: i) how subjects choose/value different types of information, ii) whether the value of acquired information about a product influences the subsequent valuation of the product itself, and iii) whether the effects of acquired information differ from those of exogenously provided information. We find that: a) subjects’ behaviors of acquiring different types of information about the product are influenced by their heterogeneous characteristics (i.e. prior beliefs, risk attitudes, prior knowledge, etc.), b) subjects place more weight on acquired information than on provided information in their decision-making process, and c) individual subjects have different values of information which caused different impacts on product valuation.

To compete in today's global economy, organizations are under pressure to improve their product development processes. The engineering design process is an important component of the overall product development process. This research considers the relationship of both social and technical variables to the engineering design process. The theoretical foundation of this research is sociotechnical systems theory. This theory states that optimum performance is achieved by jointly considering the technical and the social subsystems. The application domain of the theory is called macroergonomics. A technical variable considered by this research was engineering design process methodology. Two methodologies were considered: sequential engineering and concurrent engineering. Another technical construct considered by this research was the use of computer-supported cooperative work technology (CSCW) or groupware. The social variable considered by this research was group size. Two sizes were considered: large groups of six people and small groups of three people. This research sought to determine the optimum combination of technical and social variables that would result in highest performance. There were two phases of this research. In the first phase, a laboratory experiment was conducted using 180 engineering and building construction students as subjects. The experiment required that a system be conceived, designed, manufactured, and tested by student teams. The experimental design was a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial, between subjects design with five teams in each cell. In the second phase, the results of the first phase were provided to recognized industry and academic experts for their critique. This two-phased approach facilitated the identification of causal relationships among social and technical variables with higher external validity. In the laboratory experiment, there was no significant difference in performance between concurrent engineering groups and sequential engineering processes. Small groups significantly outperformed large groups in all conditions. CSCW did not significantly improve the performance of large or small groups. Participants in the experiment were equally satisfied with all conditions. The external survey strongly endorsed the superiority of concurrent engineering as compared to sequential engineering. There was no statistically significant optimal combination of variables that resulted in the highest design performance.

The aim of this research was to design and evaluate various Gallium Arsenide circuit elements such as logic gates, adders and multipliers suitable for high speed VLSI circuits. The issues addressed are the logic gate design and optimisation, evaluation of various buffering schemes and the impact of the algorithm on adder and multiplier performance for digital signal processing applications. This has led to the development of a design approach to produce high speed and low power dissipation Gallium Arsenide VLSI circuits. This is achieved by : Evaluating the well established Direct Coupled Logic (DCFL) gates and proposing an alternative gate, namely the Source Follower DCFL (SDCFL), to improve the noise margin and speed. Suggesting various buffering schemes to maintain high speed in areas where the fanout loading is high (eg. clock drivers). Comparing various adder types in terms of delay-power and delay-area products to arrive at a suitable architecture for Gallium Arsenide implementation and to determine the influence of the algorithm and layout approach on circuit performance. To investigate this further, a multiplier was also designed to assess the performance at higher levels of integration. Applying a new layout approach, called the 'ring notation*, to the adder and multiplier circuits in order to improve their delay-area product. Finally, the critical factors influencing the performance of the circuits are reviewed and a number of suggestions are given to maintain reliable operation at high speed.

Reducing the number of prototype builds and the related builds issues is very important. This research examines one automotive company's product development process. Issues pertaining to electrical system typically top the list of build issues. The electrical issues for different vehicle programs were studied. Interviews were conducted with key stake holders of the electrical distribution systems to understand the issues. Finally, based on the study's analysis and results, effective corrective actions are identified and recommendations for their incorporation are made.

High-technology Entrepreneurship has been a key driver of innovation and economic growth in the US. Aided by factors such as the success in IT and IT-enabled services industries and a booming economy, India has seen a sharp increase in activity in technology entrepreneurship. This thesis explored the opportunities and issues in building and growing technology startups in India. Money, market, manpower, and mentors were identified as the broad areas in which startups face challenges. The specific issues within these areas were analyzed from entrepreneurs' and investors' perspectives and potential solutions were recommended. While many of the issues faced by startups in India turned out to be similar to those faced by startups in the US, a few issues were found to be unique to India. The sources for data included in-depth interviews with participants in the Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem as well as existing research on entrepreneurship in US and India.

This research evaluates the seismic demands for a three-span curved bridge crossing fault-rupture zones. Two approximate procedures which have been proved adequate for ordinary straight bridges crossing fault-rupture zones, i.e., the fault-rupture response spectrum analysis (FR-RSA) procedure and the fault-rupture linear static analysis (FR-LSA) procedure, were considered in this investigation. These two procedures estimate the seismic demands by superposing the peak values of quasi-static and dynamic bridge responses. The peak quasi-static response in both methods is computed by nonlinear static analysis of the bridge under the ground displacement offset associated with fault-rupture. In FR-RSA and FR-LSA, the peak dynamic responses are respectively estimated from combination of the peak modal responses using the complete-quadratic-combination rule and the linear static analysis of the bridge under appropriate equivalent seismic forces. The results from the two approximate procedures were compared to those obtained from the nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) which is more rigorous but may be too onerous for seismic demand evaluation. It is shown that the FR-RSA and FR-LSA procedures which require less modeling and analysis efforts provide reasonable seismic demand estimates for practical applications.

The aim of this study is to investigate the critical design and development issues for educational robotics training camps. More specifically, the purpose of the study is to explore and describe critical design issues for educational robotics training camps, illustrating how each factor affects robotic camps and enlightening how these factors should be implemented for the design of a robotic training camp. For this purpose, two robotic training camps were organized with elementary school students. Thirty children attended the first camp and twenty two children attended to the second one. The research design was qualitative in nature, more specifically
multiple-case design approach was used. Interviews with children and instructors, observations, field notes, and camp evaluation forms were the data collection methods. The data were analyzed through the qualitative data analysis techniques. The data were categorized under emerged themes, learning outcomes, evaluation of the camps&rsquo
components, career, group issues, competition, coaching, technical issues, challenges and camp duration. Some prominent findings of the study are
the instruction strategy for a robotics camp should be designed from simple to complex. The most effective and liked part of the camps are project studies, therefore projects studies should be encouraged at robotic camps. Robotics training camps should give chance to practice to the children what they have learned at schools. The group size should be arranged that every child in the group should have duties at any time. The study was concluded with a robotics camp design guideline and a sample robotic training camp curriculum.

The advant of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) accentuates the importance of conformance testing of protocol implementations. Before a protocol implementation is delivered for conformance testing, it often has to go through several iterations of diagnostic testing. This thesis discusses various issues that arise in the design and implementation of protocol test systems for conformance and diagnostic testing. Issues discussed in this thesis include test system implementation decisions, test management, test development environment and tools, test languages, encoding and decoding, PDU specification and storage, and portability problems. The experience of testing different protocol implementations on three different environments are also discussed.

This thesis investigates three key issues in the design of defined-contribution (DC) pension plans: the optimal asset allocation strategy. the optimal retirement age and the optimal pension contribution rate. r first derive the optimal asset allocation strategy by dynamic programming for both power utility and exponential utility with stochastic interest rate and wage income. The expected terminal utility is assumed to be a function of wealth-to-wage ratio. For power terminal utility with fully hedgeable wage income or no further contribution, the optimal portfolio composition is horizon independent. For the exponential terminal utility with contribution from wage incomes with uninsurable risk, the optimal portfolio composition is also horizon independent, and the pension plan has a constant optimal pension wealth-to-wage ratio. . I then compare the optimal allocation strategy with three simple dynamic allocation strategies, the lifestyle, the threshold and the constant proportion portfolio insurance (CPPI) strategies, by numerical simulation. The optimal asset allocation strategy produces much better performance than the three simple dynamic allocation strategies. It also shows that the deterministic lifestyle strategy and the threshold strategy can be replicated by static allocations with the same expected returns and smaller vanances. The optimal retirement age and the optimal pension contribution rate problems are solved as part of the expected lifetime utility maximization problem. I show that when utility is solely determined by consumption and there is no defined benefit (DB) pension plan, the retirement age has to be exogenously given. The optimal retirement age is derived for the consumption and leisure additively separable utility and the multiplicatively separable utility. I denve the optimal pension e6tHSaHti9R rates for a gjven retirement age in a certainty world and then demonstrates that the lower and upper bounds of optimal pension contribution rates can be derived for nonlinear marginal utility with uninsurable wage risk.

Despite two decades of empirical studies focusing on programmers and the problems with programming, usability of textual programming languages is still hard to achieve. Its younger relation, visual programming languages (VPLs) also share the same problem of poor usability. This research explores and investigates the usability issues relating to VPLs in order to suggest a set of design principles that emphasise usability. The approach adopted focuses on issues arising from the interaction and communication between the human (programmers), the computer (user interface), and the program. Being exploratory in nature, this PhD reviews the literature as a starting point for stimulating and developing research questions and hypotheses that experimental studies were conducted to investigate. However, the literature alone cannot provide a fully comprehensive list of possible usability problems in VPLs so that design principles can be confidently recommended. A commercial VPL was, therefore, holistically evaluated and a comprehensive list of usability problems was obtained from the research. Six empirical studies employing both quantitative and qualitative methodology were undertaken as dictated by the nature of the research. Five of these were controlled experiments and one was qualitative-naturalistic. The experiments studied the effect of a programming paradigm and of representation of program flow on novices' performances. The results indicated superiority of control-flow programs in relation to data-flow programs; a control-flow preference among novices; and in addition that directional representation does not affect performance while traversal direction does - due to cognitive demands imposed upon programmers. Results of the qualitative study included a list of 145 usability problems and these were further categorised into ten problem areas. These findings were integrated with other analytical work based upon the review of the literature in a structured fashion to form a checklist and a set of design principles for VPLs that are empirically grounded and evaluated against existing research in the literature. Furthermore, an extended framework for Cognitive Dimensions of Notations is also discussed and proposed as an evaluation method for diagrammatic VPLs on the basis of the qualitative study. The above consists of the major findings and deliverables of this research. Nevertheless, there are several other findings identified on the basis of the substantial amount of data obtained in the series of experiments carried out, which have made a novel contribution to knowledge in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology of Programming, and Visual Programming Languages.
