Laws and regulation affect software development, as they frequently demand changes in software’ requirements to protect individuals and businesses regarding security, privacy, governance, sustainability and more. Legal requirements can dictate new requirements or constrain existing ones. The problem of software compliance is howto ensure that the software complies with the norms that the legislation imposes. The problem is particularly challenging because it combines difficultsteps: 1)analyze legal documents, 2) extract requirements from those documents, 3) identify conflicting requirements with those already implemented in software and 4) ensure that software remains compliant even with the changes. Compliance is a continuous process: laws, software and the context within which software system operates changes continuously. The works dealing with the compliance problem focus only on one or two subjects: analyze legal documents or extract requirements or identify conflicts or changes. This thesis deals with all the problems at the same time; the idea is to extract requirements from legal text, compare them with the software requirement, resolve the possible conflicts that may arise, continuously leading with the changes on environment, laws and requirements. For this, this work proposes a framework that is composed of a compliance process and continuous monitoring of environmental changes. The framework deals with different types of laws (security, privacy, transparency, health care) that are represented in explicit norms. The compliance process supports the identification, extraction, comparison and conflict resolution to help software compliance, by producing a compliant set of requirements. The compliance process is based on the semantic annotation and goal model. The semantic annotation helps to extract requirements from thelaw, using patterns. The goal model is used to help the comparison between requirement and to represent requirements in a formal and consistent requirement specification. The process is tool supported; some tools were reused (Desiree and NomosT) to further each step. It was necessary to adapt the tools for the context of the compliance process, creating a guideline, patterns, and heuristics. The continuous monitoring is concerned about the changes that affect the software compliance and has 7 the mechanism to ensure that even with those changes the software will regain compliance. The compliance monitor is basedon agents and Non Functional Requirements. The agents are represented using in i*, the idea is to showthe collaboration between the agents to ensure the continuous compliance. The requirement specification of how each agent should behave was also generated using Business Process Modeling Notation and Desiree language. The Non Functional Requirements catalogue is used to help to define operalizations for the software awareness. The framework validation was made in two parts: first, the compliance process and after all the framework proposed. For the compliance process, the effort and correctness were measured comparing the use of the proposed process andan ad-hoc method. For the entire framework, the example of monitoring the changes in the environment when an automated car is crossing the border between Washington and Canada was used. The study shows that context has a strong influence on the software requirements, and nonconformity problems may incur penalties. The contribution of this work is the Eunomia framework that has a process and goal model perspective with emphasis on monitoring that helps to deal with the compliance challenge. The framework equips the requirements engineering team with a systematic method. Eunomia framework is a tool-supported and systematic process which can be reused to reduce the time effort and to improve the quality of the requirement specification that helps to create a compliant software requirement specification that is compliant over the time.

La ricerca propone una riflessione sull’architettura contemporanea in funzione del ruolo sempre più preponderante che le tecnologie digitali hanno assunto all’interno del processo progettuale. L'introduzione dei computer nel panorama dell'architettura ha prodotto una rivoluzione nei metodi e nei processi progettuali che contribuiscono alla generazione della forma architettonica. Si è osservato che l'uso pervasivo dei software ha contribuito a modificare sostanzialmente il linguaggio architettonico. Obiettivo della tesi è capire in che modo l'espressività dell'architettura si è modificata e si sta modificando, quanto pervasivo sia l'uso del computer e quali possano essere gli sviluppi futuri. La ricerca è stata condotta attraverso un'analisi di 60 casi di studio scelti tra architetture di riconosciuta qualità, realizzati negli ultimi quindici anni e in cui l'influsso degli strumenti digitali sia fortemente evidente. I casi di studio sono stati studiati e classificati secondo una struttura teorica, composta da diverse categorie e parametri, che consente di analizzare aspetti singoli e generali. I risultati suggeriscono che una nuova era sta arrivando: il punto di partenza concettuale degli architetti nasce spesso nello spazio digitale, sfruttando le aumentate capacità di rappresentazione nel controllare e manipolare le forme. A partire da un'interpretazione critica dei risultati, si definiscono alcune tendenze trasversali in cui è possibile classificare l'architettura contemporanea digitale.
The research concerns the field of the contemporary architecture evolution related to the increasingly massive use of digital technologies in the design process. The introduction of computers in architecture has produced a real revolution in design methods and processes, which contribute to the generation of architectural shape. It was understood that the pervasive use of software has substantially altered the architectural language in the last years. Therefore, main goal of the research has been to understand how architectural expressivity is changing, how much pervasive are digital influences on architectural design and which may be future developments. The research is carried out through the development of an analytical database with sixty recent case studies, recognized digital influenced architectures, as expression of what is really happening inside architectural scenario. The case studies have been studied and classified according to a logical theoretical framework, consisting of different categories and parameters, that allows to analyze several aspects. The results suggest that a new era is coming, where the conceptual starting point of designers is often born in the digital space, taking advantage of the augmented representation skills to control and manipulate form. Starting from a critical interpretation of the results, we have identified some transversal trends, representative of contemporary digital architecture.

Garantire la sicurezza all'interno dell'ambiente costruito, costituisce un aspetto essenziale per gli ingegneri. Tuttavia, siamo sempre più esposti a catastrofi naturali imprevedibili come i terremoti che danneggiano l’ambiente in cui viviamo. La pianificazione dell’emergenza prima del disastro costituisce l'aspetto centrale di questa ricerca. Al giorno d'oggi, le soluzioni per mitigare il rischio messe in atto dagli Enti di Protezione Civile (es.: guidare le persone verso aree sicure, fornire loro il primo soccorso, migliorare la resistenza degli edifici) potrebbero rivelarsi incoerenti con lo scenario che ci si ritrova a fronteggiare. Prevedere modifiche ambientali unitamente alle reazioni umane in tali condizioni potrebbe consentire un intervento più incisivo sui livelli di sicurezza dei cittadini. Inizialmente, si sviluppano metodologie speditive di raccolta dei dati su scala urbana per la creazione di possibili scenari. In questo modo vengono analizzate e simulate le vulnerabilità dell'ambiente costruito e i fattori legati all'esposizione umana. Infine, si ottiene una metrica resiliente per interpretare i dati raccolti. Ciò permette di rilevare le criticità dei centri urbani che potrebbero impedire l'evacuazione degli abitanti e al tempo stesso l'intervento delle squadre di soccorso. Su tale base, soluzioni efficaci di riduzione del rischio vengono testate su uno scenario post-intervento iterando nuovamente il quadro metodologico ottenuto. Il workflow elaborato si propone come supporto per le pubbliche amministrazioni nella redazione dei piani di emergenza. Inoltre, il processo di raccolta dei dati può essere impiegato in attività basate sulla simulazione finalizzate alla previsione di scenari. I lavori futuri dovrebbero concentrarsi su come l’essere umano, nelle situazioni d’emergenza, può essere influenzato dalle soluzioni introdotte nell’ambiente per la riduzione del rischio (ad esempio: presenza di segnali di orientamento, ostacoli sagomati per evitare congestioni, intervento dei soccorritori) in ambienti di simulazione.
Guaranteeing the safety of populations within the built environment constitutes an essential aspect for the engineers. However, populations are more and more exposed to sudden-onset natural disasters especially in the built environment, where they live and work. Among natural disasters, earthquakes are one of the most hazardous due to visible effects and the impossibility to predict them. Emergency planning before the disaster constitute the central aspect of this research. Nowadays, risk-mitigating solutions implemented by Civil Defence Bodies (e.g.: guiding people towards safe areas, provide them the first aid, improving buildings' strength) result incoherent with the real emergency that may occur. Predicting environmental modifications (e.g.: damages) and human reactions (e.g.: evacuation choices) to such stimuli could allow intervening incisively on citizens’ safety levels. Initially, rapid data collection methodologies at the urban scale are developed for scenarios creation without consuming excessive resources and time. In this way, the built environment's physical vulnerabilities and human exposure-related factors are evaluated and simulated. Finally, a resilient metric to interpret the collected data is obtained to having knowledge of urban centre criticalities that could impede inhabitants’ evacuation and rescue teams’ intervention. On such basis, effective risk-reduction solutions are tested on a post-intervention scenario by iterating again the obtained methodological framework. The elaborated workflow can support public administrations in emergency plans redaction. Meanwhile, the collecting data process can be employed in simulation-based activities aimed at scenarios prediction. Future works should perform additional analysis investigating how a human being can be directly influenced by the introduced risk reduction solutions (e.g.: wayfinding signs presence, shaped obstacles to avoid congestions, rescuers intervention) in simulation environments.

My degree work has been an exploration in what specific skills, knowledge and understan­dings that are needed in service design as a practice, in order to successfully engage in complex contexts with multiple stakeholders, different relations, structures and regulations. In this investigation, I have been especially interested in the role of physical forms in a process where social structures are discussed and reshaped. With the ambition to create a learning process within this area I have, in collaboration with Förnyelselabbet, been part of a study in Malmö that focus on children and youth with migra­tion experiences living in vulnerable housing situations. The study is done in collaboration with multiple actors such as City of Malmö, The Red Cross, Rädda Barnen, Unicef, Skåne Stadsmission, Sensus etc. These are actors that share the same goal to highlight needs and experiences amongst children and youths. In my work I have designed tools with the ambition to unfold and deepen the under­standing of situations, meetings and objects that could enable a feeling of safety, comfort and joy when living in a vulnerable housing situation. In this context, I have recognized the importance of exploring the role of meeting points. For this purpose, I have used three objects; the slide; the sofa and the set table. As a result of this degree project I created something I call a material probe, a object with the function to visualise needs and trigger responses. This material probe captures three fundamental needs; a slide – the possibility for play and activity, a sofa – the possibility for gaining the feeling of safety and belonging, a table – the possibility for sharing experiences and information. By visualising and materialising these needs, I hope to create a discussion that unfolds challenges and promotes the children’s perspective. My work to narrow down the needs is based on multiple interviews and stories from children, youths and parents. The main question is what happens to the continued development process when research findings, needs and experiences are visualised. The main goal of this degree project has been to articulate and reflect on how service designers can combine knowledge within process design, institutional design and design of physical form. How service design as a practice can develop and if including physical forms and visualisations at a higher level in our work can help the development process forward.

Content of the thesis includes research of service design and innovation process, study based on application of the design service approaches, introduction of the study outputs, actual project of a new service design and recommendations. Following methods and techniques were used in research: persona, contextual interview, service safari, benchmarking, service blueprints, empathy map, product box. The thesis should contribute to the theoretical determination of service design and its following aplication in the design of a specific service. Final outcome of the study is a service proposal for a canteen in Lycée Français de Prague.

This 30 credits master thesis was a project which marked the last part of the Industrial Design Engineering masters' program at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. The thesis was conducted at Alten Sverige in Kista, Stockholm during spring 2015. The report describes a product development project with the aim of developing and producing a prototype for a waterproof enclosure of a probe which has high demands on sealing capability as well as durability against other externalinterference such as vibrations, impacts and weather. A theoretical study was made in the beginning of the project within the fields of seal design, eco-design, materials and manufacturing. The study led to deeper knowledgein the areas and formed a base for the development. The product and its use was mapped and design requirements for the enclosure were determined. Several design concepts were developed, both from the point of aesthetics and different functions using methods such as brainstorming, 6-3-5 Brainwriting, Build To Think and amorphological matrix. The concepts were evaluated and selected by using a decision making matrix. A final concept was selected and developed further, which resultedin a hamburger structured enclosure with an o-ring sealing. The probe is attached to the target object by using mounting tape. A concept for a snap-fit attachment was also developed. In order to find the most suitable process and material for the final prototype several rapid prototyping processes and materials were tested. The iterative prototype process was a key part of the development of the concept. The final prototype consists of a rotational milled base part with a vacuum formed cover. 3D printed tests for the snap-fit attachment was made. Different test cases and real life scenarios were put forward and provided basis for the testing and evaluation of the prototype. As the tests showed mainly positive results, the project was successfully conducted.
Denna rapport beskriver ett examensarbete, 30 hp, som utförts av två studenter från KTH, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan och som genomfördes på företaget Alten Sverige i Kista, Stockholm, under våren 2015. Rapporten beskriver ett produktutvecklingsprojekt med syfte att utveckla och producera en prototyp för en vattentät kapsling till en elektronisk enhet. Kapslingen hade höga krav på täthet samt hållbarhet mot andra yttre faktorer såsom vibrationer, stötar och väder. Projektet började med en teoretisk studie av tätningskonstruktion, ecodesign, material och tillverkning. Studien ledde till fördjupade kunskaper och bildade en utgångspunkt för framtagandet av produkten. Produkten och dess användning kartlades och en kravspecifikation togs fram. Med hjälp av metoder som brainstorming, 6-3-5 Brainwriting, Build To Think och Morfologiskmatris, togs koncept fram för olika konstruktionlösningar så väl som estetiska designförslag. Koncepten utvärderades genom att använda en Beslutsfattande matris. Ett koncept utvaldes och vidareutvecklades, vilket resulterade i en vattentät kapsling med en sandwhichstruktur som fästs mot målobjektet med dubbelhäftande tejp samt ett snapfit-fäste. Det slutgiltiga konceptet producerades genom att testa flera olika rapid-prototypingprocesser och material för att hitta det mest lämpade. Fokus var främst additiv tillverkning (3D-utskrifter), vakuumformning och fräsning. Med hjälp av den iterativa prototypprocessen kom hela tiden nya idéer upp och designen förändrades och utvecklades avseende de olika maskinerna och egenskaperna hos de producerade delarna. Den slutliga prototypen kom att bestå av en bottendel tillverkad genom fräsning, ett vakuumformat hölje och ett 3D-skrivet fäste. Olika testfall och verkliga scenarier lades fram och prototypen testades för vattentäthet bland annat IPX7 test och flera andra verkliga användningsfall. Testen visade huvudsakligen positiva resultat. Projektet kan därmed anses vara lyckat.

We want to identify the factors of how to maintain a luxury fashion brand. To do this, we have to find what characterizes a real luxury brand. We want to go into depth and find the underlying and often invisible aspects within a luxury brand. The characteristics of a luxury brand are that the majority has their production in-house and provide high quality, made by an experienced and eccentric designer. The luxury brands have a distinct and clear image and identity. The brands are available in both stores and online shops and their offered products are in the high price sector. To maintain a luxury brand, the involvement and control of fabric, production and quality is essential. The designer must maintain the right appearance, image and identity in every step of the business. Moreover, a combination of different marketing channels is good to use, as it is a way to reach a large amount of people. If the luxury company decides to use social media, the engagement is vital. Regarding the distribution channels, a luxury brand should have an online shop and regular stores. Yet, it is important that the price reflect the products value.

The Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA), is an upcoming mission resulting from the collaboration of ESA and NASA and aims at assessing the effects of a kinetic impact on an asteroid for the purpose of threat mitigation. In this framework, this research seeks to prove the feasibility of a small lander design able to autonomously land on the secondary object of the asteroid system Didymos. Initially, an overview of the most suitable guidance laws and sensors is provided. This highlighted that some types of proportional navigation guidance laws and the ZEM/ZEV could be good candidates and are therefore further analyzed in the following chapters. Meanwhile, a set of sensors comprising altimeter, camera, Star-Tracker and accelerometers was considered. To assess the effect of the noise affecting the sensors on the translational dynamics of the probe, the system is linearized and studied. This permitted to highlight that the most relevant disturbances are the ones that affect the determination of the LOS rate, hence the readings of camera and star-tracker. Afterward, the deployment is simulated in the details in a simulator, this permitted to determine that a combination of a modified version of the true proportional navigation and ZEM/ZEV provide a good solution in terms of guidance laws. Unfortunately, because of the lack of details characterizing the asteroid model, it was not possible to realistically simulate the ZEM/ZEV. Therefore, it is suggested as the next step of study to carry out further investigation and to develop a simulator able to reach the depth of details required. Finally, a proposed set-up of sensors is delineated and a Monte-Carlo run analyzing the robustness and reliability of this design for the MTPN is reported. The outcome seems to demonstrate that with a very compact and simple design, the probe is capable to autonomously insert itself in a trajectory leading from the deployment location to the target asteroid.

Increasing recognition is being placed, both in industry and in academia, on effective supply chain management. The term supply chain management presupposes that there exists a supply chain to be managed. With a focus on supply chains in which demand uncertainty is the key challenge, this dissertation develops strategies and models to aid in the design of certain supply chain features, namely capacity, flexibility and wholesale price schedules. Firstly, this dissertation studies capacity investments in single-product supply chains in which the participants make investments to maximize their individual expected profits. Using a stylized game theoretic model of a supply chain comprising a supplier and a manufacturer, simple non-linear wholesale price schedules, whether they be quantity premium or quantity discount schedules, are shown to outperform simple linear schedules in terms of the total supply chain profit achieved. While the model is stylized, it provides insight into how actual wholesale price schedules can be structured to induce near optimal supply chain capacity investments. Next, this dissertation then extends the work of Jordan and Graves (1995) so as to develop process flexibility strategies for multiple-product multiple-stage supply chains. The ability of multiple-stage supply chains to fill product demands is shown to be affected by two inefficiencies, termed stage-spanning bottlenecks and floating bottlenecks, that do not affect single-stage supply chains. Flexibility configurations differ in the protection they provide against these inefficiencies. The chaining strategy of Jordan and Graves (1995), with augmentation if either the number of stages or number of products is large, is shown to provide a high degree of protection and therefore to enable multiple-stage supply chains to better meet demand. Finally, this dissertation studies the capacity decision in multiple-product multiplestage supply chains. Solution approaches to the capacity investment problem in which there is either an expected shortfall bound or a service level bound are developed. The service level problem, while widely studied in inventory theory, has not been studied in the multiple-product multiple-stage supply chain capacity literature to date. In addition to developing solution approaches, insights into the optimal capacity decisions in multiple-product multiple-stage supply chains are provided.

During interventional ultrasound-guided procedures, sterility is maintained by covering the ultrasound transducer head and cord with a sterile sheath. The current sheathing technique is cumbersome, requires an assistant to complete, and poses a risk of tangling the probe cord and breaching the sterile barrier. This paper presents the design, development, and evaluation of a probe holder and cartridge-style, single-use applicator that returns high quality ultrasound images and sheaths ultrasound transducers 35% faster than the current technique with a decreased risk of breaking sterility. When tested by medical professionals, all participants preferred the new device to the existing probe sheathing method.

Une première partie décrit le développement d'inhibiteurs de la protéase VIH-1, qui possèdent une structure hydrazine urée. Nous avons développé une voie de synthèse efficace et convergente pour accéder à des composés énantiopurs à partir de deux "building blocks" : l'un est un dérivé d'acides aminés, l'autre peut être facilement obtenu à partir d'amines secondaires. Les composés ont ensuite été testés avec la protéase VIH-1 dans un test basé sur la technologie FRET. Dans une seconde partie, nous avons développé une sonde fluorogène pour la détection d'activités enzymatiques. Dans cette molécule, le fluorophore 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4(3h)-quinazolinone (HPQ) est couplé par un epaceur auto-effondrable avec une unité dipeptidique qui peut être clivée par une enzyme. Nous avons pu démontrer que le site de clivage dipeptidique est coupé par la leucyl aminopeptidase, ce qui conduit à un auto-effondrement rapide de l'epaceur, résultant dans la génération d'un signal fluorescent
The first part of this Ph. D thesis describes the development of several HIV-1 peptidase inhibitors having a hydrazino-urea core. We have developed an efficient, convergent synthetic route to enantiopure compounds generated from two independent building blocks, one derived from amino acids, the other one from easily accessible hydrazines. All compounds were tested with HIV-1 peptidase in a FRET based enzyme assay. In a second part, we have developed a fluorogenic probe for the detection of peptidolyic activity. In this molecule, the fluorophore 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-4(3h)-quinazolinone (HPQ) is coupled via a self-immolative spacer to an amide function that can be cleaved by an enzyme. We could demonstrate that the amide group is cleaved by commercial leucyl aminopeptidase which leads to rapid fragmentation of the spacer unit resulting in the generation of an intensly fluorescent signal

Le misure vibrazionali sono un punto di riferimento nella dinamica strutturale. Lo stesso vale anche per la diagnostica dei guasti e la valutazione della qualità del prodotto in vari campi dell'industria, dalle linee di produzione dei componenti ai prodotti finiti. Queste misure sono solitamente eseguite utilizzando accelerometri piezoelettrici collegati alla struttura in esame. Il collegamento è solitamente realizzato tramite adesivi o cera d'api, magneti o perni filettati. Tuttavia, il processo di installazione di questi sensori può richiedere molto tempo e, in alcuni casi, può essere irreversibile o addirittura non consentito. Le sonde vibrazionali di tipo hand-held sono state ampiamente utilizzate in passato, anche se le loro prestazioni (ad es. gamma di frequenze di lavoro e accuratezza complessiva) risultano inferiori rispetto alle installazioni fisse. Tuttavia, la diffusione dei robot nell'ambito dell'industria 4.0, caratterizzata dall'obiettivo di produzione a zero difetti, ha motivato un nuovo interesse per questo tipo di soluzione. Le sonde di misura vibrazionali tipo hand-held sono costituite da componenti che devono garantirne la linearità entro un determinato intervallo di frequenza e il contatto costante con la struttura in prova. Inoltre, le vibrazioni spurie, dovute alla manipolazione da parte di un operatore umano o di un robot, devono essere evitate introducendo un elemento di disaccoppiamento. Normalmente, vengono impiegati materiali convenzionali come la gomma e il silicone, per via del loro comportamento viscoelastico. Tuttavia, questi materiali possono subire modifiche al loro comportamento dinamico quando soggetti a condizioni ambientali diverse. Lo scopo di questa tesi è dimostrare il vantaggio nell'adottare metastrutture come elementi di disaccoppiamento nelle sonde vibrazionali di tipo hand-held. La metastruttura sviluppata si basa su una ripetizione periodica di celle unitarie caratterizzate da una forte separazione modale. Ne consegue, quindi, un ampio intervallo di frequenze di funzionamento.
Vibrational measurements are a landmark in structural dynamics. This is true also for fault diagnosis and product quality assessment in various fields of industry, from production lines of components to finite products. These measurements are usually performed using piezoelectric accelerometers attached to the structure under investigation. The connection is usually made using adhesive or bees-wax, magnets or threaded pins. However, the process of installing these sensors can be time-consuming and, in some cases, irreversible or even not allowed. Hand-held vibration probes were widely used in the past, even though their performances (i.e. working frequency range and overall accuracy) were lower compared to fixed installations. However, the spread of robots in the framework of industry 4.0, characterized by the zero defect manufacturing target, caused a new interest in this solution. Hand-held vibration measurements probes are made of components that must guarantee linearity within certain frequency range as well as constant contact with the structure being tested. Furthermore, spurious vibrations, due to the handling by a human operator or a robot, need to be avoided introducing a decoupling element. Normally, conventional materials, like rubber and silicon, are exploited, taking advantage of their viscoelastic behavior. However, these materials may undergo changing on their dynamic behavior when subject to different environmental conditions. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate de advantage of adopting metastructures as decoupling elements in hand-held probes. The design of the metastructure developed is based on a periodic repetition of unit cells characterized by a strong mode separation and, thus, a wide frequency bandgap.

Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) have been widely used in industry in order to determine the form / dimensional tolerances of workpieces with very complicated geometrical shapes. Therefore, CMM is an important tool during the manufacturing and quality control phases. Workpiece to be measured on a CMM is probed via touch trigger probe through its stylus tip. In other words, by virtue of the touch trigger probes CMM can acquire the dimensional data of the workpiece that is to be measured. Therefore the probe has become the most vital and fundamental part of the CMM. In this thesis, a novel type of touch trigger probe / scanning probe is proposed. The proposed probe can also be used as a scanning probe for different applications. The main purpose of this thesis is to develop a novel type of touch trigger / scanning probe that has different kinematic stage and sensing stage than the other probes currently used in the industry. Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) sensors are used for building the sensing stage of the proposed probe. GMR sensors are selected due to their outstanding sensitivity to small disturbances. Furthermore, in order to test the proposed probe
an anvil gauge setup is designed and proposed in this study. Finally, proposed probe is tested on a three-axis computer controlled electrical discharge machine (EDM), and the results acquired from those experiments are discussed.

This research describes the redesign of Landgate’s FireWatch service – a web-based map application that uses data derived from satellites to provide near real-time bushfire information. FireWatch was originally built for emergency services personnel, but recent Australian state government inquiries have called for individuals, households and communities to have independent access to bushfire information. Therefore, it was necessary to redesign FireWatch with a new remote community-based audience in mind. The thesis describes multiple iterations of a user-centred action research design process that resulted in a publicly accessible web application known as MyFireWatch. Due to delayed access to actual community–based users, scenario-based design and a personas frame-work were created to consider the user’s perspective. These personas then informed the recruitment of community-based users in the remote Western Australian town of Kununurra. Working with these remote community-based users quantified what functionality provided by FireWatch could be useful to this new audience. It also revealed that the information presented to them could be used in unanticipated ways and that satellite information can assist users in identifying key landmarks. However, user feedback indicated a lack of awareness of bushfire map applications in Australia, including FireWatch. Results from an online questionnaire verified that the design process undertaken resulted in a usable interface that met the needs of the majority of users, although several participants noted that the interface was slow to respond to user input. There was significant support for user-sourced fire information, although several participants raised concerns of how the information would be verified and how user-sourced information would impact the usability of the application. Participants used social media but were also highly reliant on traditional media and word of mouth – something that Landgate will need to consider in future efforts to increase awareness of MyFireWatch Two frameworks arose from the research undertaken: a pattern language for presenting map-based hazard information and a personas framework for designing for remote Australian community based users.

Allt fler dagligvarukedjor erbjuder produkter vid sidan av leverantörernas, dessa säljs under ett flertal egna varumärken som delas in i olika prissegment. Med det ökade utbudet av varumärken blir konsumenterna allt mer selektiva vilket ställer högre krav på en tydlig differentiering för att varumärkena ska kunna konkurrera och nå målsegmentet. Denna studie undersöker hur lågprisvarumärkena differentierar sig genom förpackningsdesign och vilka konsumentreaktioner det medför. Detta görs genom att identifiera och utvärdera de typiska stildrag som idag tycks gälla vid formgivningen av distributörers egna lågprisförpackningar. Stildragen fastställs utifrån kulör, typografi, bildspråk och visuell hierarki. De lågprisvarumärken som undersöktes var Ica Basic, Coop X-tra och Eldorado, vilka tillhör de tre ledande aktörerna på den svenska livsmedelsmarknaden; Ica, Coop och Axfood. För att uppfylla syftet och besvara de preciserade frågorna genomfördes en visuell datainsamling samt fokuserade gruppintervjuer. Under den visuella datainsamlingen fotograferades aktuella förpackningar i sina respektive butiker, där bilderna sedan användes för att identifiera de gemensamma stildragen. För att utvärdera de identifierade stildragen genomfördes därefter fokusgruppsintervjuer som undersökte konsumenternas reaktioner på förpackningarna. Studien visade att stildragen som lågprisvarumärkena använder sig av utgörs av ett utbrett användande av kulören vitt tillsammans med mättade kulörer, ofta i stora block. För typografin används grova linjära typsnitt satta i stor teckengrad. Stildragen för bildspråk utgörs av användandet av avskalade produktbilder samt enkla illustrationer. Den visuella hierarkin utmärktes av att förpackningsdesignen inkluderade få designelement och ett tydligt fokus på produktnamn, produktbild och logotyp. Stildragen har visat sig vara väl inarbetade indikatorer för lågpris hos konsumenterna då de har lärt sig associera dessa med lågprissegmentet. Det har även visat sig att stildragen medför associationer till låg kvalitet och att de överlag ofta uppfattas som icke attraktiva, detta väljer dock många att bortse från då engagemanget rörande livsmedelsprodukter visat sig vara lågt när det kommer till förbrukningsvaror. Att signalera en högre kvalitet och attraktivitet utan att avvika från stildragen har visat sig möjligt då Eldorados alternativa implementering väckt dessa känslor hos flertalet av studiens deltagare. Dock så medför detta även en problematik då varumärkets differentiering som lågpris tycks vara otydligare och därför riskerar att bli insorterad i fel prisgrupp hos konsumenterna.

Tip Enhanced Near-field Optical Microscopy (TENOM) is a method for optically imaging at resolutions far below the diffraction limit. This technique requires optical nano-probes with very specialized geometries, in order to obtain large, localized enhancements of the electromagnetic field, which is the driver behind this imaging method. Traditional methods for the fabrication of these nano-probes involve electrochemical etching and subsequent FIB milling. However, this milling process is non-trivial, requiring multiple cuts on each probe. This requires multiple rotations of the probe within the FIB system, which may not be possible in all systems, meaning the sample must be removed from vacuum, rotated by hand and placed back under vacuum. This is time consuming and costly and presents a problem with reproducibility. The method presented here is to replace multiple cuts from a side profile with a small number of cuts from a top down profile. This method uses the inherent imaging characteristics of the FIB, by assigning beam dwell times to specific locations on the sample, through the use of bitmap images. These bitmaps are placed over the sample while imaging and provide a lookup table for the beam while milling. These images are grayscale with the color of each pixel representing the dwell time at that pixel. This technique, combined with grayscale gradients, can provide probes with a symmetric geometry, making the system polarization independent.

Denna studie syftar till att undersöka om det finns ett samband mellan designfaktorer och prisklass på rödvinsetiketter. För att kartlägga förekommande designfaktorer har en visuell innehållsanalys gjorts inom tre olika prisklasser hämtad från Systembolagets hemsida. Utifrån den visuella innehållsanalysens resultat designades tre vinetiketter för varje prisklass. För att ta reda på om dessa designfaktorer hade ett samband med den tänkta prisklassen testades vinetiketterna mot konsumenter genom en webbenkät. Slutsatsen var att det fanns vissa generella drag som skiljer prisklasserna åt även om många designfaktorer var vanligt förekommande för alla prisklasser. Utifrån respondenternas svar visade sig vissa av designfaktorerna vara mer eller mindre tydliga för den tilltänkta prisklassen.
This study aims to examine whether there is a connection between design factors and price on wine labels for red wines. To identify occurring design factors, a visual content analysis was made from three different price ranges brought from the Swedish Alcohol Retailing Monopoly’s website. Based on the visual content analysis results three wine labels for each price range was designed. To find out if these design factors were associated with the intended price range, the wine labels were tested on consumers with a web survey. The conclusion was that there was some general features that distinguish price range classes, although many design elements were common for all price ranges. Based on the respondents answers it turned out that some of the design factors were more or less clear to the intended price range.

The price of anarchy quantifies the inefficiency that occurs in the total system objective in the user optimization as compared to the system optimization setting. It is well known that this inefficiency occurs due to lack of coordination among the competitors in the system. In this thesis, we study the price of anarchy in a Bertrand oligopoly market by comparing the total profits in the two settings. The main contribution of this thesis is a lower and an upper bound for the price of anarchy that only depends on the price sensitivity matrix characterizing the demand sellers face. We first derive these bounds for a symmetric affine demand model. Using the same approach, we also provide a lower bound for asymmetric affine demand as well as a lower and an upper bound for nonlinear demand. These bounds are easy to compute. In addition, we illustrate that the worst-case price of anarchy value occurs for a uniform demand model when quality differences do not exist among sellers. This implies that in many real-world instances where quality differences exist, the performance under the user optimization may in fact be close to what is achieved under system optimization. We illustrate several insights on the bounds we present through simulations.

A new advanced high strength steels (AHSS) is designed based on Fe-C-Mn-Al composition. Martensitic steel is processed in intercritical region to achieve an ultrafine-grained duplex γ–(α + α') microstructure. The focus was on tuning the degree of austenite plasticity via controlling its stability, called austenite engineering. Interest in austenite engineering stems from transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, which is known to enhance ductility. The thermodynamic and kinetic analyses were used to optimize the annealing condition. The evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties was studied using different techniques. Due to high heating rate, the austenite reversion occurred before recrystallization of the ferrite. The final microstructure was duplex steel with globular-shaped grains. High volume fraction of the austenite phase was obtained (f_γ>40%) in very short time annealing. By increasing annealing temperature and time, austenite fraction and grain size increased. However, due to dilution of the austenite from stabilizers elements, the stability of the austenite dropped and transformed into martensite during quenching. This led in variety of austenite stabilities that resulted in different combination of mechanical properties. The critical factors influencing the onset of TRIP effect is studied and it was found that both early and delayed onset of the TRIP effect will lead to worse ductility. Hence, to achieve ultrahigh strength and excellent ductility, austenite stability shall be controlled to precisely trigger out TRIP. This study find out that discontinuous yielding or Lüders bands phenomenon can be used in ultrafine duplex steels to improve ductility. The results showed that superb combination of strength (σ_YS>1.0GPa and σ_UTS>1.4GPa) and ductility (ε_t≥20%) could be achieved in short time annealing of less than 10 minutes. This work evidence that tuning the austenite to a marginal stability enables us to design strong and ductile steels.

In this thesis we examine the prevailing dilemma concerning fast fashion and an increased attitude-behaviour gap. Many previous studies have explored the subject of fast fashion and also tried to solve the problem with the attitude-behaviour gap. We want to take this a step further by investigating what influence fast fashion may have on consumers' perception of value. By exploring this we hope to gain further knowledge concerning the attitude-behavior gap.Our focus is on young female consumers, since previous studies show the likelihood of the gap between intent and action being the largest in this consumer group. To a certain extent it can be explained by their frequent purchase of fast fashion, but also the fact that younger consumers are more influenced by fashion press and celebrity culture. This study is foremost based on qualitative research and is completed with the use of two focus groups, as well as a more quantitative research in the form of a content analysis of the Swedish fashion magazine, Sofis Mode. The study has a deductive approach.The theoretical perspectives consist of theories concerning value; value in relation to price and the concept of value. We also present a redefined model of perceived value. The results show evidence of increased focus and exposure of low priced fashion and that the low perceived monetary price has a significant impact of consumers‟ perceived value of clothing. The focus on selling low price instead of value inclines that clothes have lost its intrinsic value, as a result making clothes easily replaceable. Our study further shows a smaller attitude-behaviour gap among consumers with a high knowledge of textiles and textile production.

The demands placed on scientific software are different from those placed on general purpose software, and as a result, creating software for science and for scientists requires a specialized approach. Much of software engineering practices have developed in situations in which a tool is desired to perform some definable task, with measurable and verifiable outcomes. The users and the developers know what the tool "should" do. Scientific software often uses unproven or experimental techniques to address unsolved problems. The software is often run on "experimental" High Performance Computing hardware, adding another layer of complexity. It may not be possible to say what the software should do, or what the results should be, as these may be connected to very scientific questions for which the software is being developed. Software development in this realm requires a deep understanding of the relevent scientific domain area. The present work describes applications resulting from a scientific software development process that builds upon detailed understanding of the scientific domain area. YODA is an application primarily for selecting microarray probe sequences for measuring gene expression. At the time of its development, none of the existing programs for this task satisfied the best-known requirements for microarray probe selection. The question of what makes a good microarray probe was a research area at the time, and YODA was developed to incorporate the latest understanding of these requirements, drawn from the research literature, into a tool that can be used by a research biologist. An appendix examines the response and use in the years since YODA was released. PEPR is a software system for inferring highly resolved whole-genome phylogenies for hundreds of genomes. It encodes a process developed through years of research and collaboration to produce some of the highest quality phylogenies available for large sets of bacterial genomes, with no manual intervention required. This process is described in detail, and results are compared with high quality results from the literature to show that the process is at least as successful as more labor-intensive manual efforts. An appendix presents additional results, including high quality phylogenies for many bacterial Orders.

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a valuable tool which can be used to enhance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal intensities in a variety of biological and materials science systems, by transferring polarization from unpaired electrons to nuclei. In this thesis, the mechanical design and radio frequency NMR circuit for a triple channel magic angle spinning (MAS) DNP NMR probe for operation at 5 Tesla are developed, and the construction of the probe is detailed. The probe carries out NMR in three frequency ranges, corresponding to the 1H, 1 3C, and 15N Larmor frequencies at 5 T, but can be tuned to other nuclei as well, in particular 2 H. A 1H cross effect DNP enhancement of 40 on 1 3C labeled urea, using 10 mM TOTAPOL, is reported after cross polarization to 13C. As of writing, the probe is undergoing further optimization to improve the enhancement. The dynamics and interactions of water molecules are studied in lanthanum magnesium nitrate hydrate (La 2Mg3 (NO 3 )12 24H 20) (LMN) using a variety of 2H and 170 NMR techniques. Variable temperature 2H spectra are studied to characterize water dynamics in LMN, and the 170 quadrupole interaction is studied in an attempt to resolve crystallographically distinct water sites. 170 MQMAS is performed. Gadolinium is explored as a polarizing agent for DNP enhanced NMR. LMN crystals doped with Gd are synthesized, with the goal of using the enhancement from DNP to allow further characterization of crystalline solids. Polarization transfer to 1H in LMN doped with 3% Gd through the solid effect at 5 T is observed, and an NMR enhancement of 2.5 is recorded at 85 K. Planned future work on 2H and 15N DNP in LMN, using the MAS DNP NMR probe described here, is outlined.

This thesis documents a new approach for the identification of a small biologically active molecule’s site of interaction, through the rapid synthesis of molecular probes. A marked library approach has been developed whereby a biocompatible marker is attached onto the small molecule’s molecular scaffold. This marker plays no role in the screening process itself, but facilitates the formation of a range of molecular probes from active marked library members. As an example of molecular probe formation, site selective biotinylation will be discussed in the introduction. This marked library concept has been applied to the natural product anisomycin A. Investigations focused on development of a detailed structure activity relationship for anisomycin’s activation of the stress activated protein kinase (SAPK) pathway, along with the synthesis of a number of marked library analogues. The active marked library members were then converted to a range of functional molecular probes utilising the copper(I) catalysed Huisgen cycloaddition as the key coupling step. These molecular probes are being used in the elucidation of anisomycin’s biological target for activation of the SAPK pathway. In a further demonstration of this strategy, a focused library of marked steroids has been synthesised based on the functionalisation of dehydroepiandrosterone B. Directed by the results of preliminary biological screening, a number of marked library members have been converted into fluorescent molecular probes. These probes will be used in future applications to probe the biological action of the dehydroepiandrosterone.

A high-frequency surge and stall sensing fore-aft probe was developed at the Turbomachinery Research Laboratory at Virginia Tech. The probe was designed to detect surge and stall based on changes in large regions of flow behind a turbofan engine compressor fan. The probe exhibited excellent frequency response capabilities and can accurately measure data with response well above anticipated surge frequencies. A CFD analysis was performed in order to gain more understanding about the flow around the probe. The results of the CFD analysis and the experimental testing were analyzed and presented. The probe worked as expected when the flow was aligned with the upstream pressure transducer. Thus, it can be used to determine the onset of surge and stall. However, the probe was found to be extremely sensitive to off-axis flows. Design improvements are suggested in order to increase its capabilities.

Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de desidratar a polpa de cajá através do processo de secagem em camada de espuma e analisar, através do planejamento experimental fatorial, o produto em pó obtido. Três formulações foram elaboradas com a polpa de cajá integral e três diferentes concentrações do emulsificante Emustab® (1, 2 e 3%), e uma concentração fixa do aditivo Super Liga Neutra (2%), as quais foram agitadas em batedeira durante 15 minutos, formando espuma. A polpa de cajá e as formulações foram caracterizadas quanto aos parâmetros químicos, físicos e físico-químicos. As Formulações (espumas) 1, 2 e 3 foram desidratadas em estufa com circulação forçada de ar, nas temperaturas de 60, 70 e 80 °C e com espessura da camada de espuma de 0,5; 1,0 e 1,5 cm. Os modelos de Page, Henderson & Pabis e Cavalcanti Mata foram ajustados aos dados experimentais das curvas de secagem. Os pós obtidos ao fim do processo de secagem foram analisados quanto aos parâmetros teor de água, °Brix, pH, acidez, açúcares (redutores, totais e não-redutores), ácido ascórbico, cinzas, cor, atividade de água e rendimento, com a finalidade de se avaliar a influência da temperatura de secagem, espessura da camada de espuma e da concentração de Emustab, através do planejamento experimental fatorial. Determinou-se a isoterma de adsorção de água a 25 °C, da melhor amostra em pó selecionada através do planejamento fatorial, e a ela se ajustaram os modelos de GAB, Oswin e Peleg. Com os resultados obtidos neste trabalho verificou-se que a polpa de cajá integral é ácida e pode ser considerada fonte de vitamina C; trata-se de um fluido pseudoplástico, em que o modelo de Herschel Bulkley foi o que melhor se ajustou aos dados experimentais. Avaliando-se os parâmetros de massa específica, expansão volumétrica e estabilidade da espuma, as três formulações estudadas (1, 2 e 3) se apresentaram dentro dos padrões de secagem em camada de espuma; verificou-se a influência dos aditivos nas características da polpa integral e as espumas apresentaram comportamento pseudoplástico, em que o modelo de Mizrahi-Berk foi o que melhor se ajustou aos dados experimentais. As curvas de secagem das espumas foram influenciadas pela espessura da camada e pela temperatura de secagem. As secagens mais rápidas ocorreram na menor espessura e maior temperatura e apresentaram menor teor de água final; a secagem mais rápida ocorreu na Formulação 3, com maior concentração de Emustab. O modelo de Cavalcanti Mata foi o que melhor se ajustou às curvas de cinética de secagem das espumas. Através do planejamento experimental verificou-se que o melhor pó encontrado foi o do Experimento 2 (polpa de cajá com 3% de Emustab e 2% de Super Liga Neutra; espessura da camada de espuma de 0,5 cm e temperatura de secagem de 60 °C).
The cajá pulp was dryed using foam-mat drying process and results were analyzed using the experimental factorial design. Were prepared formulations of cajá pulp with three different concentrations of the emulsifier Emustab® (1, 2 and 3%) and fixed concentration Super Liga Neutra (2%) additive; this mixture was stirred during 15 minutes until the foam formation. AH samples at the end were analyzed for its chemical, physical and physico-chemical properties. The Formulations 1, 2 and 3% were dried in a stove with air circulation at 60, 70 and 80 °C and thickness 0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 cm. The Page, Henderson & Pabis and Cavalcanti Mata models were used to fit the experimental data. The moisture content, °Brix, pH, acidity, sugars (reducing, total and non-reducing sugars), ascorbic acid, ashes, color, water activity and yield of the powder pulp was determined to study the effect of the drying temperature, foam layer thickness and the emulsifier concentration. From these results, the best sample was selected to study the moisture adsorption isotherm at 25 °C, fitting data by the GAB, Oswin and Peleg models. According the results it can be concluded that the whole cajá pulp is acid and could have its applications as a vitamin C source; furthermore is classified as pseudoplastic fluid, whereby its experimental data was best fítted by the Herschel Bulkley model. It can be stated that the density, volumetric expansion and stability of the foam of the three different formulations were in agreement with the drying standards of foam layers. There was an effect of the additives on the properties of the whole pulp as well as on the different formulations, whereby the formulations presented a pseudoplastic behavior, with its experimental data best fitted by the Mizrahi-Berk model. The drying curves were affected by the thickness of the layer and temperature. It was noticed that thinner layers resulted in higher drying rates with a lower final moisture content. The highest drying rate was obtained by the sample with 3% of the emulsifier. The experimental data of the drying process was best fitted by the Cavalcanti Mata model. According to the experimental factorial design the sample with the concentration of 3% of Emustab® and 2% of Super Liga Neutra, dried with a layer thickness of 0.5 cm at a temperature of 60 °C presented the best results.

Data science and Information Technologies are currently playing a crucial role in the context of buildings sustainability and energy efficiency. The achievements of relevant energy performances through the optimal control of building subsystems and the introduction of innovative decision support tools in the early-stages of the design are noteworthy features of contemporary smart buildings. Smart buildings are demonstrating several distinctive features that are opening new markets and establishing new innovative design solution. Not surprisingly, the design phase of new buildings has acquired primary importance for the improvement of sustainability and the reduction of the energy demand. Nowadays, buildings represent 40% of world primary energy consumption and 24% of greenhouse emissions. There is a growing interest in precisely understanding and profiling the actual building energy consumptions (e.g., when higher peaks occur and how much they are). This implies that the development of advanced energy consumption measurements, verification instruments and forecasting algorithms is an emerging need. Indeed, existing building simulation tools provide a realistic representation of building operations only when the simulated models are properly calibrated and validated. Thanks to these instruments, in this context, the objective of the present research thesis is to carry out a development of decision support tool, based on a parametric analysis, for helping designers in evaluating the choice of different building components, such as insulation foams and glazing systems and evaluating their benefits for thermal comfort and energy savings through a real building performance simulation model. In fact, the developed tool is intended to play an important role in the early design phase, when it is well known that parametric analysis is useful for evaluating high-level benchmarking. On the other hand, the complexity related to the large number of variables affecting the building behavior prevents achieving a precise picture of the real-world building operation. To address such an issue, the proposed method enables powerful parametric studies in a reasonable time. The main feature of the proposed tool is the integration of the definition of the building model including the calibration and validation procedures, with a sensitivity analyzer based on an automatic process. The proposed tool compares several possible alternative models of the given building, obtained by automatically combining different thermal behaviors, physical parameters and climatic zones, and using long-term comfort indices. The main goal is to estimate e the values of long-term indices for a preliminary thermal performance evaluation of the given building in different contexts and with different parameters combinations. In particular, a Matlab tested has been developed for co-simulation with the whole-building energy simulator EnergyPlus. The tool is provided with a front-end in order to facilitate the configuration process in defining the building model and listing the associated building parameters needed for the co-simulation. Moreover, the front-end allows the selection of desired performance indices: for instance, the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and the Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD) indices are implemented and standardized in accordance with the ASHRAE 55 Thermal Comfort Code. Finally, the tool is provided with a data analysis module: after co-simulation runs, the output data from EnergyPlus are aggregated, analyzed and visualized in Matlab both in tabular and graphical views. As a result, this analysis can be useful in several ways including: monitoring of the building thermal comfort, controlling the efficiency of the HVAC equipment, estimating the energy demand by utility companies and forecasting the energy savings due to equipment retrofits or implementation of an energy conservation measure. Furthermore, this type of approach is also used as an inverse modeling tool to better understand the performance requirements of materials, for example, to establish the preferred physical property ranges that lead to zero-energy building enclosures. The first part of the thesis focuses on a literature review and the state-of-art of the building performance simulation, calibration and validation approaches and optimization techniques for buildings' thermal comfort and energy savings. While, the second part of the thesis focuses on a real case study (Solatrium House), where is applied a novel calibration and validation approach and the description of the conducted parametric analysis for evaluating the benefits of different design choices on a building's performance.

In order to make the market more liberalization, create greater efficiency in the market, and be more in line with international standards, price fluctuation limit has been relaxed from 7% to 10%, starting on June 1, 2015. To the market mechanism, price limit may be a trading interfere.However, research findings on the influence of adjustment of price fluctuation limit are inconsistent. Price limit may cause different results to the market in different factors or market situation. For finding how the policy influence on Taiwan stock market, this paper use regression discontinuity design (RDD). The sample period is from january 1, 2014 to december 31, 2016. Moreover, the trading volume of electric industry in TWSE is about to 70%, we examine the effects on centralized order market , electric industry and non-electric industry apart. There are three main findings , first, adjustment of price fluctuation limit in centralized order market has a significantly positive impact on illiquidity, CSSD, volatility and TVII, negative on margin ratio and turnover. Second, in electric industry, there is a significant positive impact on illiquidity, CSSD, volatility and TVII, negative on margin ratio and turnover. Third, in non-electric industry, there is a significant positive impact on illiquidity, CSSD volatility and TVII, negative on margin ratio and turnover.

This dissertation mainly introduces how to use dual-probe displacement sensor to realize the displacement measurement. It simplifies the complex linearization process and picks out the better design parameters to make the user easy and convenient to use without the complicated linearization costs time lost. In this paper,Colpitts oscillating electrical appliances as a model, the design of the sensor sensing circuit and to explore the capacitance and inductance of the oscillation frequency and peak impact, calculate the capacitance and inductance between the best match, the other with the minimum level The method solves the parameters of the displacement of the probe to derive the displacement relationship of the dual probe. The experimental results show that the linearity of this dual-probe displacement sensor is 10.5% under the displacement of -2mm ~ 2mm.

This paper deals with design semiotics, focuses on product design (light design) from the perspectives of social semiotics (van Leeuwen, 2005; Kress a van Leeuwen, 2006), multimodality (Kress, 2010) and product design (Norman, 1988, 2004a; Monö, 1997), and perceive design as a multimodal process of choices as well as a result of materialization of meanings. The theoretical chapters are dedicated to definitions of particular approaches and terms, which are applied within the empirical parts afterwards. These rely on the theories mentioned above and the design phases established by Riley (2003, 2004), which we linked with given theoretical approaches (the discourse phase with social semiotics; the conception phase with multimodality and emotional design; the inception phase with multimodality; and the reception phase with social semiotics and product design). Semi-structured interviews were held with three designers engaged in light design - Jan Plecháč, Jakub Pollág and Karel Matějka. The purpose of this paper is to explore and compare practices of designers from their own perspectives, considering intended product meanings (purposes), used modes and highlighting different design levels. Throughout recent years, environmental perils have increased and awareness regarding such dangers has improved proportionally. In light of the growing concerns, and coupled with fiercer competition and legislation, product based solutions to meet present and future needs have been deemed insufficient to ensure the planet’s survival. Thus, the birth of integrated product-service offerings, where the product is associated to add-on services, enhancing its performance and achieving higher levels of value for the customer, as well as the manufacturer, with embedded ecological advantages. The service-oriented perspective of delivering solutions is known as Product-Service Systems (PSSs). However, despite advances in acknowledging the benefits that lie in adopting a PSS to answer consumer needs, a formal approach to developing PSS solutions is absent. This dissertation investigates the integration of product design and service design strategies into product-service offerings: overall processes for this integration are present, but the intricate steps of each phase are missing. A literature review examines the most dominant design approaches, as well as design frameworks to structure the PSS design process. The outcome of the review led to the absence of a generic design framework as existing design approaches and processes seemed adapted to a specific context and field. From the examination of the respective literature, we present a four-stage design process, entitled the Functional-Engineered Product-Service System (FEPSS) model, built on a design science approach. Ideation and task analysis, conceptual design, embodiment design, and validation and release are thoroughly detailed with the appropriate tools to define the elements of a PSS. The research then concentrates on the first two stages as they represent the core of PSS design and development process. Ideation and task analysis highlight the use of qualitative tools to define customer requirements, as well as quantitative ones, such as the Kano model, Quality Function Deployment (QFD), the fuzzy logic, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to prioritize these requirements and define the value-creating ones as the basis of the PSS design. Conceptual design presents two approaches to define PSS concepts. The first consists of a functional decomposition approach based on adapting morphological matrices (MMs) to a product-service extending traditional MMs to include the service elements and selection of stakeholders in a product-service integrated setting. The choice of the concept is determined according to a life cycle modelling that illustrates the environmental impact of the proposed concept(s) and compares it/them to the existing offering. The second opts for the QFD for PSS tool augmented by fuzzy logic and the AHP to determine the product and service components of the PSS. Then, the use of Axiomatic Design (AD) shows how a functional decomposition and QFD for PSS can be used to develop PSS modules. Four case studies conducted in the agricultural and biomedical field illustrate the use of the FEPSS and, in particular, its first two phases. The results achieved show the potential of such an approach when implementing a PSS approach, especially in the case of a manufacturer that wants to shift from producing products to providing integrated product-service offerings. At the same time, from a more general perspective, the research work highlighted the benefits of PSSs as they allow the achievement of more sustainable solutions without decreasing the customer values.

DNA microarrays are widely used techniques in molecular biology and DNA computing area. Before performing the microarray experiment, a set of subsequences of DNA called probes which are complementary to the target genes of interest must be found. And its reliability seriously depends on the quality of the probe sequences. Therefore, one must carefully choose the probe set in target sequences. A new method for probe design strategy using multi-objective genetic algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm is able to find a set of suitable probes more efficient and uses a model based on suffix tree to speed up the specificity constraint checking. The dry dock experimental results show that the proposed algorithm finds several probes for DNA microarray that not only obey the design properties, but also have specificity.

This study use five link five joint spatial mechanisms, include three prismatic pairs, one revolute pair with one degree of freedom and one prismatic pair with two degrees of freedom, to design probe grinder machine employed in epoxy probe card processes. Epoxy probe card is used in wafer probe processes. The mechanism features a grinding disk with constant rotary motion. Two hundred probes are clamped in the position and feeding mechanisms that are composed of a linear guideway and screw. Linear guideway and ball screws both feature high precision, low wear and noise characteristics, thus improving the precision of the grinding and yield. The high number of clamped probes featured is significantly higher than employed in traditional grinding mechanisms, so as to improve grinding production and yield. The study began with a collection of all the relevant patents. These patents were classified according to mechanical characteristics. Computer-aided design software was used to develop a 3D model of the mechanism designs by design conditions. Computer-aided engineering software was employed to analyze model assembly and interference to determine the overall feasibility of the mechanism.
