Nas últimas décadas, vários fatores socioeconômicos têm despertado o interesse por pesquisas sobre casas inteligentes e sua relação com os moradores. Dentre esses fatores, destacam-se as mudanças climáticas e a preocupação crescente com questões ambientais; a longevidade da população mundial; o uso eficiente de recursos naturais e de energia; e novas formas de gerenciar a rotina diária e o lazer. Nesse contexto, o objetivo da dissertação é propor e demonstrar um modelo para geração e seleção de concepções de casas inteligentes baseadas em soluções tecnológicas inovadoras, utilizando-se a abordagem de Design Thinking e integrando-se diversas ferramentas de gestão da inovação, incluindo a combinação de métodos multicritério de apoio à decisão. A pesquisa pode ser considerada descritiva, metodológica e participativa. Quanto aos meios de investigação, a metodologia compreendeu pesquisa bibliográfica e documental; modelagem do processo de geração e seleção de concepções de casas inteligentes baseada em Design Thinking; estudo empírico para demonstração da aplicabilidade do modelo no âmbito de um projeto de casa inteligente no Brasil (Projeto NO.V.A.). Destacam-se como principais resultados desta pesquisa um modelo conceitual desenvolvido segundo uma perspectiva mais empática, que permite colocar as pessoas no centro do desenvolvimento dos projetos de casas inteligentes; e a melhor concepção de casa inteligente para o Projeto NO.V.A., proposta segundo a abordagem de Design Thinking, com suporte de uma plataforma digital cooperativa que envolveu cerca de 35 mil pessoas de vários países, e emprego do método híbrido AHP-TOPSIS.
In recent decades, several socioeconomic factors have stimulated research on smart homes and their relationship with their residents. Highlights are climate changes and the growing concern with environmental issues; longevity of the world s population; search for more efficient the use of natural resources and energy; and new habits and ways of managing daily routine and leisure. In this context, the objective of this dissertation is to propose and demonstrate a model for generation and selection of conceptions based on innovative technological solutions, adopting the Design Thinking approach, and integrating several innovation management tools, including crowdsourcing and the combination of multicriteria decision support methods. This research can be classified as descriptive, methodological, and participative. From the bibliographic and documentary review on the central themes of the research, a model based on Design Thinking approach was developed to generate and select the best conceptions of smart homes based on innovative technological solutions. Aiming to demonstrate the applicability of this model in the context of a smart home project in Brazil (NO.V.A. Project), an empirical study was carried out during the applied phase of this research. The main contributions are a conceptual model developed from a more empathic perspective, which allows people to be at the center of the development of smart home projects, and the best smart home conception based on based on innovative technological solutions for NO.VA. Project, as the main output of a Design Thinking process, which included a digital collaborative platform and the use of several innovation management tools, such as a hybrid multiple criteria decision-making method (AHP-TOPSIS).

Проаналізовано і систематизовано різновиди проектних рішень захисних курток для пілотів військової авіації. На основі аналізу зразків існуючої військової форми вітчизняного та закордонного виробництва розроблено класифікацію окремих деталей та вузлів. Виявлено найбільш раціональні конструктивно-технологічні рішення залежно від функціональності виробу та умов його експлуатації. Доведено доцільність використання методу трансформації при проектуванні одягу для пілотів.
Different types of design solutions for protective jackets for military aviation pilots have been analyzed and systematized. On the basis of the analysis of the existing military uniform of domestic and foreign production, the classification of individual elements and units has been developed. The most rational structural and technological solutions have been revealed, according to the functionality of the goods and the conditions of its usage. The usefulness of transformation methods in designing clothes for pilots has been proved.

Denna studie har som syfte att undersöka hur barns konstruktionslek kan bli till ett givande undervisningstillfälle samt vilka könsspecifika skillnader som finns inom teknikämnet. Målgruppen för denna studie är barn i yngre åldrar, så som förskolan och lågstadiet. Metoden som används är en systematisk litteraturgenomgång samt en induktiv tematisk analys. Den forskning som tas fram ska behandla konstruktionsarbete och-/eller genusperspektiv och-/eller teknikundervisning och-/eller teknik. Forskning som samlats in granskas sedan grundligt och analyseras. Den tematiska analysen resulterar i tre huvudteman som är återkommande i all den granskade forskningen. Dessa teman är teknikundervisning, lärarroll och elevroll. Resultatet av studien visar på att barns lek kan bli ett givande undervisningstillfälle på olika sätt. Detta kan bland annat ske genom att läraren engagerar sig i konstruktionsleken i form av frågeställningar där barnen får chans att analysera sin egen lek och utveckla sitt tekniska tänkande. Studien visar även på att könsspecifika skillnader syns i ett flertal faktorer inom ämnet. Några av de mest framträdande faktorerna är att självförtroendet, motivationen och nyfikenheten är betydligt lägre hos flickor än hos pojkar.

Background: In South Africa, 81 per cent of the population are dependent on the public health system. The country faces a complex burden of a combination of chronic infectious illness and non-communicable diseases and high maternal mortality, 310 deaths per 100,000 live births. These and many other systemic health challenges have meant the government is starting to invest in digital solutions to strengthen health services delivery and public health; due to their ease of use, broad reach and wide acceptance. Digital communication systems are an intriguing possibility for delivering healthcare in low-resource settings. This thesis considers how mobile (mHealth) and non-mobile communication technologies are currently and potentially being used by patients and health-workers within the rural South African health system. Health system dimensions are also analysed at the macrolevel to define the enablers and barriers to mHealth. Methods: This qualitative exploratory study was a case study design guided by theory-driven realist methodology. Mixed-methods research triangulated in-depth individual interviews, focus group discussions, prolonged engagement in nonparticipant observations and documentary analysis from a diverse range of participants (community members, patients, health-workers, policy-makers and experts) operating at different tiers within the country (community, facility, district, provincial and national). A realist review of patient mobile monitoring of chronic disease was conducted to determine hypotheses to inform the interpretation of empirical data and refine theory from the Context-Mechanism-Outcome configurations. These were supported by high-level theories of access, normalisation and the capability approach. Results: Supportive government policy combined with patient and health-workers’ informal mHealth use can act as enablers to the uptake of digital communication systems, particularly with improved maintenance and management strategies. Access to health information is a barrier to care, which may be overcome with an evidence-based health website though inequities may still remain. Likewise, digital reminders may support chronic disease management particularly for patients with hypertension. Poor patient referrals and remote diagnosis can be overcome by digital communication as smartphone ownership increases and mobile data prices reduce. Local digital innovation relies on government backing for greater scale. Conclusion: Informal digital communication solutions for health used by patients and health-workers are evident as mobile phone use becomes normalised within society. This is occurring in parallel with the government’s interest in digital health technologies to strengthen the delivery of care. A novel healthcare delivery framework proposes that a foundational electronic health and mHealth ecosystem (Context) can support a health system with multiple challenges. The four health system dimensions of government stewardship, organisational, technological and financial systems are necessary to support mobile health solutions. These dimensions give reinforcement (Mechanisms) to improve communication between patients and health-workers which may increase access to healthcare and continuity of care. Work practices are made more efficient, health service delivery is enhanced and patient outcomes can improve to maximise health gain (Outcomes).

Дисертація на здобуття наукового ступеня кандидата технічних наук (доктора філософії) за спеціальністю 05.02.09 "Динаміка та міцність машин" (13 – Механічна інженерія). – Національний технічний університет «Харківський політехнічний інститут», Харків, 2019. Потреби сучасної промисловості, транспорту і сфери послуг у інноваційних виробах із підвищеними техніко-економічними характеристиками останнім часом різко зростають. При цьому велику частку серед такої продукції займають тонкостінні машинобудівні конструкції, у яких раціонально поєднуються масові і характеристики міцності. У той же час на багато виробів (літаки, судна, рухомий склад залізниць, крани, перевантажувачі, ємності високого тиску, апарати хімічної промисловості, устаткування агропромислового комплексу) поширюються суворі офіційні правила і норми, спрямовані, у першу чергу, на забезпечення безпеки експлуатації. Відповідно, при проектних дослідженнях використовуються усталені методики розрахунку, а також традиційні технічні рішення. Незважаючи на тиск сталої практики, що схиляється до створення виробів у вигляді «клонів» давно створених аналогів, діє також протилежна тенденція. Вона породжується загальним прагненням до прогресу, навіть у консервативних областях діяльності, а також економічними міркуваннями. Більш того, багато споживачів інноваційних виробів установлюють свої додаткові вимоги до продукції, що спрямовані на продовження терміну служби конструкцій, підвищення їхньої продуктивності, інтенсивності експлуатаційних режимів або навантажувальної здатності. У цих обставинах, окрім нормативних обмежень, з’являються додаткові, що ускладнює виконання вимог до проектованих конструкцій. Таким чином, виникла і посилюється у своїй актуальності та важливості науково-практична задача розробки методів забезпечення міцності інноваційних тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій при дії комплексу експлуатаційних навантажень. Її постановка, розв’язання та впровадження у практику проектних досліджень склала мету, зміст і напрями дисертаційних досліджень. У дисертаційній роботі розв’язана науково-технічна задача, яка полягає в удосконалення методів і моделей для проектного забезпечення міцності тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій при дії комплексу експлуатаційних навантажень. У роботі для аналізу напружено-деформованого стану тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій застосовуються співвідношення теорії пружності і методу скінченних елементів. Формування геометричної форми досліджуваних конструкцій здійснювалося методами твердотільного і поверхневого моделювання. Для варіативної зміни структури і розмірів досліджуваних об’єктів адаптовано і розвинено метод узагальненого параметричного моделювання стосовно інноваційних тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій. Експериментальні дослідження здійснювалися методами тензометрії та акселерометрії. У ході виконання дисертаційного дослідження отримано наступні наукові результати: 1) проведено аналіз умов експлуатації, нормативних вимог, а також методів розрахунку тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій з урахуванням обмежень на міцність, і на цій основі визначені напрями дисертаційних досліджень; 2) удосконалено методи і моделі для обґрунтування проектних параметрів інноваційних тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій за критеріями міцності при дії комплексу експлуатаційних навантажень із урахуванням нормативних обмежень; 3) здійснено розв’язання низки прикладних задач проектного обґрунтування технічних рішень для тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій за критеріями міцності та довговічності; 4) здійснено розрахунково-експериментальні дослідження напружено- деформованого стану інноваційних тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій, які спроектовано на основі рекомендацій із застосуванням результатів дисертаційних досліджень; 5) впроваджено результати досліджень у виробництво.
Тhesis for candidate of technical science degree (Philosophy Doctor) in speciality 05.02.09 – Dynamics and Strength of Machines (13 – mechanical engineering). – National Тechnical University «Kharkov Polytechnic Institute», Kharkiv, 2019. The needs of modern industry, transport and services in innovative products with increased technical and economic characteristics have recently been increasing dramatically. Large proportion of such products are thin-walled engineering structures, which rationally combine mass and strength characteristics. At the same time, strict rules and regulations are applied to many products (aircraft, ships, rolling stock, cranes, reloaders, high-pressure vessels, chemical industry equipment, agricultural equipment) for ensure the operation safety. Accordingly, design studies use established computational methods, as well as traditional technical solutions. In spite of pressure of established practice, which tends to create products as "clones" of long-created analogues, opposite trend also applies. It is generated by general aspiration for progress, even in conservative areas of activity, as well as economic considerations. Moreover, many consumers of innovative products set their additional requirements for products aimed at extending service life of structures, increasing their productivity, intensity of operating modes or load capacity. In these circumstances, in addition to regulatory restrictions, there are additional ones, which complicates the requirements fulfillment for projected designs. Thus, the scientific and practical task of developing methods for strength ensuring of innovative thin-walled engineering structures under action of operating loads complex has appeared and is intensified in its urgency and importance. Its formulation, solution and implementation to design studies practice is goal, content and directions of dissertation research. In the dissertation work the scientific and technical problem is solved, which consists in methods and models improvement for strength ensurance of thin-walled engineering structures under action of operational loads complex. In the work for stress-strain state analysis of thin-walled engineering structures the theory of elasticity ratios and the finite element method are used. Geometric shape formation of investigated structures was carried out by methods of solid state and surface modeling. For structure and size variation of studied objects, the method of generalized parametric modeling for innovative thin-walled engineering structures is adapted and developed. Experimental studies were carried out using strain gauge and accelerometer methods. In course of dissertation research the following scientific results were obtained: 1) an analysis of operating conditions, regulatory requirements, as well as analysis methods of thin-walled engineering structures taking into account the constrains on durability, and on this basis, the dissertation research directions were determined; 2) methods and models for design parameters justification of innovative thin-walled engineering structures according to strength criteria under action of operational loads complex, taking into account regulatory constraints are improved; 3) solution of a number of applied tasks of technical solutions substantiation for the thin-walled engineering structures according to strength and durability criteria; 4) computational and experimental studies of stress-strain state of innovative thin-walled engineering structures that are designed on the basis of recommendations with application of dissertation research results; 5) research results are introduced into production.

Дисертація на здобуття наукового ступеня кандидата технічних наук за спеціальністю 05.02.09 – динаміка таміцність машин. Національний технічний університет «Харківський політехнічний інститут», Міністерство освіти і науки України, Харків, 2019. Дисертація присвячена удосконаленню методів і моделей для проектного забезпечення міцності тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій при дії комплексу експлуатаційних навантажень. Обґрунтування раціональних параметрів і конструктивних рішень ТСМБК здійснюється за критеріями мінімізації маси, зниження напружень, підвищення терміну експлуатації. Ураховуються апроксимації залежностей критеріальних величин, що поступово локалізуються, від варійованих параметрів. Узагальненими параметрами виступають структура, проектно-технологічні рішення ТСМБК, конструктивні параметри і експлуатаційні режими. При цьому забезпечується розв’язання задач одиничного аналізу, багатоваріантних досліджень, а також обґрунтування раціональних проектно-технологічних рішень. На розвиток відомих підходів розглянуті наступні узагальнення: уніфікація, доцільність, ефективності, ідентифікація навантажень, верифікація, прогнозування, відлаштування. Здійснена також алгоритмізація запропонованих методів розрахунку НДС тонкостінних машинобудівних конструкцій на основі поєднання переваг універсальних і спеціальних систем. Проведено розв’язання низки прикладних задач. Обґрунтовано раціональні проектні параметри інноваційних ТСМБК. Представлено результати експериментальних досліджень інноваційних вагону-цистерни, вагону-платформи і крана-перевантажувача, які спроектовано і виготовлено на основі впровадження рекомендацій за підсумками дисертаційних досліджень.
Thesis for the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences in specialty 05.02.09 – Dynamics and strength of machines. National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute», Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Kharkiv, 2019. The thesis is devoted to the improvement of methods and models for the design ensuring of the strength of thin-walled engineering structures under the action of operational loadings complex. The justification for rational parameters and design solutions for thin-walled engineering structures is carried out according to the criteria of mass minimizing, stresses reducing, and service life increasing. Various additional criteria such as cost, manufacturability, economy, energy efficiency, can be taken into account in the formation of the quality function. The dependences approximations of criterion values, which are gradually localized, from variable parameters are taken into account. The structure, design and technological solutions of thin-walled engineering structures, structural parameters and operating modes are the generalized parameters. This provides a solution to the problems of a single analysis, multivariate studies, as well as the justification for rational design and technological solutions. The following generalizations are considered: unification, expediency, efficiency, loading identification, verification, forecasting, tune-up in development of known approach. The algorithmization of proposed methods for calculating of the stress strain state of thin-walled engineering structures has also been carried out based on a combination of the advantages of universal and special systems. A number of applied problems are solved. Parametric finite element models of researched objects have been developed based on a set of studies of the stress-strain state of the power elements. The rational design parameters of innovative thin-walled engineering structures are determined. The results of experimental studies of innovative tank cars, platform cars and loading cranes, which are designed and manufactured based on the implementation of recommendations from dissertation research, are presented. Comparative experimental and computational studies of the structures stress-strain state were carried out. They are combined with certification tests, during which the stresses in the power elements were recorded. The operational loadings are determined which are acting on thin-walled structures. During the tests, regularities were established that determine the dependence of the loadings components on the structure from various factors. Verification of the numerical models parameters of thin-walled engineering constructions elements was carried out. Designed on the basis of researches innovative structures have improved technical and economic characteristics compared with similar ones.

In this article, a technological solution is proposed to identify and reduce the level of mental stress of a person through a wearable device. The proposal identifies a physiological variable: Heart rate, through the integration between a wearable and a mobile application through text recognition using the back camera of a smartphone. As part of the process, the technological solution shows a list of guidelines depending on the level of stress obtained in a given time. Once completed, it can be measured again in order to confirm the evolution of your stress level. This proposal allows the patient to keep his stress level under control in an effective and accessible way in real time. The proposal consists of four phases: 1. Collection of parameters through the wearable; 2. Data reception by the mobile application; 3. Data storage in a cloud environment and 4. Data collection and processing; this last phase is divided into 4 sub-phases: 4.1. Stress level analysis, 4.2. Recommendations to decrease the level obtained, 4.3. Comparison between measurements and 4.4. Measurement history per day. The proposal was validated in a workplace with people from 20 to 35 years old located in Lima, Peru. Preliminary results showed that 80% of patients managed to reduce their stress level with the proposed solution.

Thesis I worked on a project basis provided the building permit for an office complex of two identical fourth storey buildings which from the first storey intersects the inner atrium. The buildings are located within the CTZone Brno in the street Masna. The buildings are designed so that the ground floor is a garage for cars and retail space for rent and above-ground floors are reserved for office space lease. Objects are based on a floating pile conducted by the CFA, which builds prefabricated concrete skeleton. The cladding is formed by a combined system of aluminum windows, masonry face and sheet plotted on a system of stainless steel brackets. Roofing of buildings is done running flat roofs, the roofing of the atrium serves as a walkable roof. The garage is designed bearing slab plate fitted topping for added durability. Internal Partition Walls and walls are made of aerated concrete blocks. Thesis deals with construction technological preparations for the construction and contains a technical report, coordinating the situation buildings with wider relationships routes, time and financial plan, study the implementation of the main stages, the project site equipment, design tools, technological regulation, inspection and test plan, itemized budget, comparing two designs rough superstructure and appropriate drawings.

With increasing challenges from international competition and domestic demands for a technologically literate workforce, pressure is growing on the educational system to produce students that are literate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Integrative STEM education utilizes design-based pedagogical approaches to teach science/math content and practices concurrently with technology/engineering content and practices (Wells & Ernst, 2012, para. 2). The discipline of technology education has traditionally implemented design-based pedagogical approaches. However, the discipline has not demonstrated through empirical research that its existence and pedagogies are beneficial to student learning and cognition (Lewis, 1999, 2006; Petrina, 1998; Wells, 2008, 2010; Zuga, 1994, 1997, 2001).
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the technological design-based approach to teaching biotechnology literacy supports students\' connections of science and technology concepts. Grounded in Ausubel\'s (1968) theory on meaningful learning and Novak\'s (1980) advanced organizer of concept mapping, this study examined evidence of high school students\' cognitive structural change throughout the technological design-based approach to instruction. At three key intervals throughout the technological design process, students developed concept maps to document their understanding of the biology and technology concepts presented within the instructional materials. Data for this study included the students\' constructed concept maps. To analyze the concept maps, the researcher used Hay et al.\'s (2008) three-method analysis for measuring the quality of students\' learning, and a qualitative analysis.
Data analysis across all four methods indicated that all participants experienced a varying degree of growth in biology, technology, and integrative concepts and connections. Collectively this study supports the notion that the technological design-based approach to instruction does indeed (1) encourage meaningful learning, and (2) increase students\' use of higher order thinking indicated by their abilities to demonstrate their use of schematic and strategic knowledge within their concept maps. The results of this study have direct implications within the areas of Technology Education, Science Education, classroom practice, and concept mapping. The discussion and implications suggest the need to expand the research conducted within this study, and to improve the methods for concept mapping analysis.

This thesis explores the need for software tools to aid in the conceptual stage of product design processes in a geographically distributed work environment. While the need for such a solution exists, there have been few strides to update the tools engineers currently use. The 2.009 design process is used as a model to better understand the particular needs of conceptual design. The intent of the study is to identify elements of a software solution that can support the design process. The structure of the design is a result of analysis of potential users as well as involvement in the type of design process to which the solution is intended to cater. The solution is motivated by recent advancements in internet and software technology. The final design addresses six important needs: communication of ideas, data and deadlines, general meeting scheduling, task force communication, scheduling, timeline and purpose, remote meeting, data & communication archival, and notification of design & communication changes. This thesis provides the preliminary research necessary to support the an IT design solution.

CAPTCHAs are widely used to tell humans and computers apart on the Internet, but user experience shows that many of these are inaccessible to users with disabilities. The Norwegian Government has proposed a Plan of Action for Universal Design to raise awareness on the matter of accessibility and this thesis demonstrates how one can achieve the measures specified in this plan when designing a CAPTCHA. By evaluating existing solutions and investigating the aspects of web accessibility and disabilities involved, I propose a requirement specification and my recommendations for future work.

In this thesis a Pascal computer program is presented which calculates a proposed design of parachute from some simple input parameters, of the type specified by a customer to a parachute company. The program reduces by a significant degree time spent by parachute engineers in the preliminary design stages. Parachute design is a process which (in common with much engineering design) can be regarded as consisting of a number of separate calculations. The most suitable method (or methods) for each calculation were selected after a thorough investigation of parachute design techniques. The chosen methods must be sufficiently accurate and readily conform to a computer treatment. The data required by the program have been collected from various sources and are stored in a number of files on a floppy disk. The program is applied to requirements received by a parachute company and results obtained compared with the actual parachutes designed. The program is highly interactive with the user who is able to dispute its selection of values for various parameters. Because the designer can make a rapid and objective choice between a number of methods for various calculations, the existence of this program contributes to his knowledge of the relevance of the parameters involved in, and his understanding of, parachute design. Examples of these techniques are given in the text. Possibilities for expanding and improving the program exist in a number of areas. In some cases the data required for a particular parachute or particular design methods are not available or do not exist. Provision has been made for such data to be included in the program when they are received.

At the electro remelting slag (ESR) facility at Uddeholm, cylindrical steel ingots are produced in several different sizes. The ESR process requires a “starting step” that consist of a 20mm thick steel plate and is a little larger than the diameter of the ingot. During casting the steel plate is inevitably welded to the ingot, also a protective slag layer is also present and flows on top of the melt when the ingot is produced. This layer is sacrificial and is removed before forging. The plate consists of a different and unwanted material composition and must be removed at some point to ensure the best material properties of the ingot. Current process steps at Uddeholm causes the steel plate to be smeared out on the high-quality ingot. The “impure” part of the ingot leads to extra waste and costs after forging. The ingots are cast vertically but needs to be positioned horizontally to be transported to the forge, this is done using an overhead crane and a clamp. This maneuver exerts excessive stress that damages the crane and the clamp sometimes fails and drops the ingot. Because of the high-risk steps during ingot handling as well as the extra waste that is created due to the starting step, the purpose of this thesis is to develop a solution that can: move the ingots from a vertical to a horizontal position in a controlled manner, a method to remove the starting step before forging and reduce the overall risks during ingot handling. The goal is to develop a complete concept that solves the problems mentioned so that the solution can later be realized.To get a deeper understanding of the current procedures and problems, visits and meetings at Uddeholm were carried out. This master thesis builds on the principle of the product development process. Interviews with operators, managers, and other impacted employees at Uddeholm were conducted in order to specify a product specification. To make the project more fathomable, six sub functions were defined. Later a concept generation session using the principles of brainstorming was held with engineers and managers at Uddeholm to find new, plausible solutions to the problems. The results from the session were reviewed and some solutions were discarded directly. Solutions that passed the screening was scored using a weighted decision matrix based on a Kesselring matrix.The chosen concepts were: milling to remove the starting step, “rotary axis grab” to rotate the ingots, a conveyor belt to transport slag, a vacuum and conveyor belt to remove chips, a roll bed with V-pallets to handle and transport the ingots, and let the slag fall of naturally when horizontal. These solutions fulfill almost all of Uddeholm’s requirements and will significantly increase the safety and profitability. The new solutions also bring in high flexibility for production and will free up time for the operators.The lifting tool of the solution needed to be structurally verified to prove it is a valid option. This was done by analyzing the maximum stress in one part of the tool. The results gave that it was indeed a feasible solution.The whole product development process has proven helpful for this machine system. It has especially proven useful for documenting all decisions made throughout the project. This makes it easier for Uddeholm to adopt the solution and develop it further and later realize it.

Detta examensarbete inom produkt- och processutveckling har genomförts på uppdrag av SMS Smart Media Solutions AB i Stockholm. Syftet med arbetet har varit att ta fram och utveckla ett stativ som ska kunna hålla upp till 4 stycken datorskärmar och som tillåter ergonomisk anpassning och användning. Under projektets gång har antalet skärmar utökats från 4 till 8 för att tillmötesgå uppkomna kund- och marknadskrav. Målet med examensarbetet har varit att ta fram en färdig prototyp som ska kunna ligga till grund för tillverkning av stativet.

Under utvecklingsarbetet har verktyg som QFD, funktionsanalys, Ishikawa-diagram, Pugh’s jämförelsematris och FMEA använts för att säkerställa att kund-, marknads-, kvalitets och funktionskrav uppfylls. Arbetet inleddes med en idégeneringsfas som utmynnade i ett antal olika koncept. Koncepten utvärderades utifrån kravspecifikation, funktion, antal standardkomponenter och pris. Konceptet som ansågs starkast utvecklades till en prototyp vilken i sin tur testades och utvärderades.

Resultatet av examensarbetet är att det utvecklade stativet är infört i SMS Smart Media Solutions’ produktportfolio och kommer att finnas med i SMS’ produktkatalog för 2010. Stativet motsvarar alla krav som satts upp i kravspecifikationen och alla problemen som definierats i problemformuleringen har lösts.

 


Abstract

This thesis in product and process development has been made in cooperation with SMS Smart Media Solutions AB in Stockholm. The aim of the thesis has been to develop a new display bracket that can carry up to 4 monitors and that allows ergonomically adjustments and usage. During the project the amount of maximum monitors has been changed from 4 to 8 to meet the demand of the customers and the market. The goal of the thesis has been to develop a prototype that would be the ground of the future bracket that will be offered in SMS Smart Media Solutions’ product portfolio.

To make sure that the developed bracket meets all the demands and criteria, tools like QFD, analysis of function, Ishikawa diagram, Pugh’s matrix and FMEA have been used. The process of the product development started with brainstorming and concept generation. The developed concepts were evaluated using analysis of requirements, costs, functions and the amount of used standard components. The winning concept was carried on into a prototype that was tested, evaluated and improved.

The result of the thesis is that the developed bracket has been integrated to SMS Smart Media Solutions’ product portfolio and will be added to SMS’ product catalogue for 2010. The final bracket met all the criterions that were set in the specification of requirements and all the problems form the problem statement were solved.

As perdas de energia elétrica, particularmente as comerciais, constituem problema importante e complexo para as empresas distribuidoras. O problema só se apresenta de forma aguda nos países em desenvolvimento, onde o percentual de perdas por furto é elevado e adquire importantes conotações sociais, políticas e culturais. Isso explica o fato de empresas brasileiras de distribuição de energia elétrica investirem recursos apreciáveis para mitigar esse problema e ressalta a importância de um tema ainda pouco explorado na literatura técnico-científica. Esta dissertação, de caráter exploratório, tem como objetivo estudar o problema de perda de energia por desvio e a eficácia de soluções tecnológicas investigando o caso de uma empresa e os resultados obtidos em projeto recente. Ao tempo do estudo, a empresa implantava uma tecnologia cujo objetivo principal era identificar os clientes que desviam energia elétrica e, posteriormente, tornar o processo de faturamento automatizado. O estudo partiu de algumas questões julgadas mais relevantes, incluindo: Quanto a empresa ganhou com a instalação desta tecnologia? Como se comporta o consumo dos clientes antes e depois da instalação da tecnologia? Há correlação entre o ganho da empresa e o poder aquisitivo da população da área? Há efeito demonstração de uma área sobre suas vizinhas? A partir destas questões foram analisadas séries de dados referentes ao consumo medido antes e após a instalação da nova tecnologia. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade da tecnologia como eficaz paliativo de curto-prazo para o problema cuja solução definitiva envolve tratamento concomitante dos aspectos sociais, políticos e culturais.
Electrical energy losses, chiefly, commercial losses, constitute an important and complex problem for energy distribution companies worldwide. However, only in developing countries the problem becomes acute because theft losses are large, and coupled with social, legal, political and cultural issues. This explains why Brazilian energy distribution companies dedicate sizable investments for mitigating the problem, and stresses the importance of a theme still largely unexplored in the technical-scientific literature. This thesis, of exploratory nature, addresses the problem and assesses the effectiveness of technological solutions by investigating the case of a recent project developed in a Brazilian company. At the time of the research, the company was implementing a new and original technology, whose main objective was to identify pilfering clients, and later on, to make the billing process more automated. The study started with some questions judged more relevant, including: How large was the gain yielded by the new technology? How does the energy consumption behave after the technological change? Is there a correlation between the gain obtained and the areas of lesser purchasing power? Is there a demonstration effect upon neighboring areas? Starting from these questions, series of historical data on measured consumption before and after the new technology were analyzed. The results indicate the feasibility of the technology as an effective shortterm palliative for the problem whose ultimate solution involves the concurrent treatment of the social, legal, political e cultural aspects.

“Overworking to death” is a phenomenon that has been noticeable in developing countries. The cause of death is mainly through ischemic strokes. While the victims’ occupations differed, they all shared a common characteristic, being positioned in a sedentary work, ranging from IT workers to doctors. This project’s aim was to develop a product that prevented or decreased the strokes that derived from sedentary overwork. This was mainly tackled by preventing one of the three causes of developing blood props, slowed blood flow. In order to gather rich data of the phenomenon, a qualitative study was conducted in China, during two months. By doing an extensive structured sampling, information rich data could be gathered during a short period of time. Data were derived from observations, questionnaires and an interview, which then was interpreted to customer needs and the final product specification. The final product became a trouser with an in built dynamic compression mechanic, that can compress the veins mostly during sitting activities, in order to prevent blood stasis. The compression mechanic works like the Chinese finger trap; compressing the calves while sitting and stretching the legs forward. It is made only out of polysaccharides fibres; cotton and corn.
"Guolaosi" eller död från överarbete är ett fenomen som i regel uppkommer bland utvecklingsländer. Dödsorsaken är huvudsakligen genom stroke. Offrens yrken varierar allt från professorer, IT-arbetare till läkare. De delar dock en sak gemensamt; att arbeta under långa perioder stillasittande. Projektets mål var att utveckla en produkt som minskar dödliga följderna av sedentära överarbete, genom att förebygga en av de tre orsakerna för att utveckla blodproppar; saktad blodström. Målgruppen var då kineser av de yrken som hade tidigare drabbats av fenomenet. För att samla informationsrika data om fenomenet genomfördes en kvalitativ studie i Kina under två månader. Genom att göra en omfattande strukturerad provtagning kunde informationsrika data samlas under en kort tidsperiod. Fältstudien bestod av observationer, frågeformulär och en intervju, som då tolkades till kundbehov och eventuellt produktspecifikationen. Den slutliga produkten kom att bli ett par byxor med en inbyggd dynamisk komprimeringsmekanism, som kan komprimera venerna under sittande aktiviteter, för att förhindra saktad blodström. Kompressionsmekanismen fungerar som den kinesiska fingerfällan. Den komprimerar blodkärlen medan personen sitter och sträcker benen framåt. Produkten är konstruerad på så sätt att den kan tillverkas endast av polysackariders tråd, från bomull och majs. Vilket är lämpligt för Kinas lokala resurser.

Outsourcing within the logistics and supply chain sector is perceived as a method to save money and improve client service levels. The outsourcing process exists within a highly stratified market of service provision and high value commercial arrangements may extend over many years. The client has a responsibility to define the strategy for their supply chain and agree distribution channel objectives which support the wider organisation’s brand delivery. There is a variety of solutions to satisfy these objectives of which outsourcing is one and should be accompanied by clear success criteria as well as a governance structure in order to yield a long term successful commercial arrangement. It is perceived that organisations may not follow an iterative approach towards outsourcing and that failing to adhere to these principles results in a lack of satisfaction for both parties evidenced by high contract turnover rates. This Phd thesis has investigated the issue of solution design within outsourced logistics amongst a group of 400 senior logistics managers through case studies, interviews and a three round Delphi survey. The hypothesis for this investigation was ‘the length and stability of an outsourcing relationship is directly related to the amount of effort expended by the customer in designing their logistics solution’. It was found that clients develop logistics strategy in varying degrees and over varying timescales. Clients measure the cost of supply chain activities with varying frequencies and few follow a straight forward method to define the parameters of a successful supply chain. Within outsourcing arrangements, governance and the management of change were poorly interpreted and executed. The current and future stratifications of logistics service offerings relied on a degree of collaboration between the pursuant parties and it was difficult to determine the effectiveness of these approaches when the balance of power between the parties was so unequal. Both clients and service providers were found to be poorly prepared to grasp the opportunities presented by the rising costs of energy and the future demands of reducing carbon intensity within the sector. Contributions were defined in terms of service level stratification and likely risk, behaviours and a toolkit for clients to observe when working within the outsourced environment as well as the opportunities presented by the changes currently influencing the sector. In conclusion, the hypothesis was found to be valid and the important role the client has to play in specifying and managing their logistics service provision was applicable across the logistics and supply chain industry.

Richards' equation is difficult to solve numerically because water flow in the unsaturated zone is complicated by the fact that the soil's permeability depends on its water saturation. The accuracy and computational efficiency of numerical solution are affected by the form of the governing equation, the estimation of the internodal hydraulic conductivity and the time-stepping scheme. In order to save computational time and improve efficiency of numerical techniques, two classical dimensionless numbers, Peclet and Courant numbers, and their combinations, Fourier and Advective Peclet numbers, are used as the criteria for estimating the spatial and temporal increments needed for the numerical solution of the linear Richards' equation (for example expo_nential hydraulic functions) and two new dimensi_onless numbers, Modified Peclet and Courant numbers for the non-linear Richards' equation (van Genuchten's hydraulic functions). In this way, we can get numerical solutions of Richards' equation not only with no oscillation and mass conservation, but also with adequate convergency speed and accuracy. These numbers are only related to the soil-hydraulic properties and grid size.

The massive industrial production exploited by our society since the XIX century has growth at expenses of the planet. Environmental damages are already visible, and they urge us to find new and sustainable production ways. Among all contributors, this thesis is focused on enzymes and its potential application in industry. Enzymes are biomolecules capable of performing and speeding up chemical reactions. Their versatility makes them a perfect choice for green chemistry proposals, allowing the substitution of damaging process involving hard chemical compounds or heavy energy usage. The work done focus on the better understanding of enzymatic properties and behavior to improve them for industrial application, by applying state-of-the-art modeling techniques. This knowledge has allowed the development of a new classification method for substrate promiscuity, the Effective Volume, and the design of enhanced enzyme variants. In the enzyme engineering line, this thesis presents a mutant laccase obtained through computer-aided rational design, with an improved activity over arylamines, tailored explicitly for polyaniline production. Moreover, we introduce, for the first time in our knowledge, the concept of PluriZymes, an enzyme with two fully functional active sites: an original one and a “de novo” artificially added one.
La producció industrial massiva generada per la nostra societat des del segle XIX, ha crescut a expenses del planeta. Els danys ambientals ja són visibles i ens animen a trobar formes de producció noves i sostenibles. Entre tots els col·laboradors, aquesta tesi es centra en els enzims i la seva possible aplicació a la indústria. Els enzims són biomolècules capaces de realitzar i accelerar les reaccions químiques. La seva versatilitat els converteix en una opció perfecta per química verda, permetent la substitució de processos nocius que comporten utilitzar compostos químics durs o un ús intensiu d’energia. Els resultats presentats es centren en una millor comprensió de les propietats enzimàtiques i del seu comportament per millorar-les per a aplicacions industrials, mitjançant l'aplicació de tècniques de modelització d'última generació. Aquest coneixement ha permès el desenvolupament d’un nou mètode de classificació de la promiscuïtat del substrat, Effective Volume, i el disseny de variants enzimàtiques millorades. En la línia d’enginyeria d’enzims, aquesta tesi presenta una lacasa mutant obtinguda a través d’un disseny racional assistit per ordinador, amb una activitat millorada sobre les arilaminas, adaptada explícitament a la producció de polianilina. Precast concrete technology is of great importance in multifamily housing. This technology provides the possibility to the industrialize housing construction and thus enhance the availability and quality of houses. With regard to the design process of precast concrete housing, architectural and technological concepts have to be woven into housing systems by iterative processes. Although precast concrete technology is an offshoot of reinforced concrete technology, its structural nature and construction process is not the same: its identification with the concept of industrialization makes this technology quite different from cast-in-place concrete. In other words, the processes of precasting, of transportation and handling, and of the erection of precast concrete building systems give significant advantages to housing systems, but they pose technological constraints to as well. This thesis investigates the technological rules and constraints of precast concrete structural systems which provide technological approaches to precast concrete housing systems. First, the methodology of the considerations of structural systems is introduced. Second, the technological rules and constraints of precasting, transportation, and construction methods are discussed in detail. Then, the technological rules and constraints of three typical structural systems, including unbraced frame, braced frame, and large panel, are examined.

Hence, a theoretical position and research agenda developed concerning the nature of technology for (the purposes of those engaged in) designing. As widespread as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiatives and reforms are today in education, a rudimentary problem with these endeavors is being overlooked. In general, education programs and school districts are failing to ensure that elementary teachers who provide children's early academic experiences have the appropriate knowledge of and proclivity toward STEM subjects. This issue is further compounded by the focus centered on mathematics due to accountability requirements leaving very little emphasis on science, and most often, the exclusion of technology and engineering instruction from the curriculum (Blank, 2012; Cunningham, 2009; Lederman and Lederman, 2013; Lewis, Harshbarger, and Dema, 2014; Walker, 2014). At the elementary level, the lack of science instruction and professional development generates a weakness for both pre- and in-service teachers and prompts elevated concerns about teaching science (Goodrum, Cousins, and Kinnear, 1992; Anderson, 2002). Research (Lewis, 1999/2006; Wells, 2014) suggests that one way to address this weakness is through the technological/engineering designed-based approach within the context of integrative STEM education. The purpose of the study was to gain an understanding of change in science instructional content and practice through professional development that educates elementary teachers to implement Technological/Engineering Design Based Learning (T/E DBL) as part of teaching science. The research design was a multiple case study which adhered to a concurrent mixed method approach (Teddlie, and Tashakkori, 2006; Yin, 2003),with four participants who were recruited because of their availability and their grade level teaching assignment that correlated to an analysis of the 2013 science state accountability test, Standards of Learning (Pyle, 2015). Data collected from surveys were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. These data were corroborated with a sweep instrument and assessment rubric analyses, and interview responses to validate the results. Findings from this study revealed that professional development model used in this study was clearly effective in getting elementary teachers to implement T/E DBL. The participants were better able to integrate T/E DBL when planning and designing instructional units and had an improved understanding of the science concepts they were teaching.

Given  the  necessity  to  achieve  vertical  integration  in  complex  NPD  projects,  this  study  offers  a perspective  on  the  implication  of  customers  and  suppliers  involvement  under  technological uncertainty.  The  purpose  of  this  work  is  to  use  SoSE  in  order  to  develop  a  framework  that  may support Marine system design in NPD under technological uncertainty. It has been assumed that it is possible to achieve the Pareto optimum with respect to the key variables influencing the success of the NPD process; furthermore, this study will explore the possibility to tackle the goal misalignment between Customer, Suppliers and OEMs interacting in an evolving scenario and to offer a decisional ground  for  the  mitigation  of  such  misalignment.  Concluding,  the  purpose  of  this  study  has  been expanded by answering three research questions on how Technological uncertainty influences NPD in  Marine  System  Design,  what  alternative  frameworks  can  be  used  to  structure  such  designs  and how System of Systems Engineering can be used to build such alternatives.  The structure of the model built in this report is based on the concepts related to Enterprise System of Systems Engineering (SoSE), Agency Costs and Transaction Costs theories. The analysis is based on a  case  study  where  a  propulsion  system  has  to  be  developed  in  order  to  meet  the  incumbent environmental deadline imposed by the Policy maker, while taking into account future adaptations.     Basing  on  the  results,  the  largest  misalignments  pertain  to  the  Value dimension,  where  the  actors prioritized different features depending on their different positioning of the actors in the value chain, leading to an increase of the Agency costs in the NPD. On the other hand, the possibilities to share the  knowledge,  to  split  the  costs  over  the  involved  parties  and  to  reduce  the  Transaction  costs represent  the  main  advantages  perceived  from  the  actors.  An  integrative type  of  structure  of  the collaboration  within  the  actors,  for  instance  establishing  a  Joint  venture  or  through  Integrated development, would reduce the misalignments.  Finally,  ABB  can  use  SoSE  in  order  to  manage  its  internal  R&D  process  and  the  involvement  of customers  and  suppliers.  In  general,  SoS  can  help  OEMs  in  dealing  with  uncertainty  thanks  to  the concept  of  fluid  boundaries.  As  a  consequence,  the  integrated  system  will  benefit  of  greater flexibility while complying with the requirements given by the customers and the suppliers.

The largest age group in western society, the baby boomers, was born between 1943 and 1964, considering different definitions for the time span. All these people have an age between 62 and 48 years old. The life expectancy of these people is the highest in history and they will be more and more willing to stay independent as long as possible. The core of independence is being able to provide and take care of oneself. In order to do that, the instruments that surround the person have to be adjusted to the needs of the person and aid as much as possible. This is the report of a Bachelor Degree Project that has the intention to develop a kitchen accessible for all people, both people with full ability and people with limited capabilities, using the inclusive design toolkit. At the same time it has to be appealing enough that people without limited capabilities also enjoy the use of this kitchen, this will be pursued by applying the pleasure design methodology. Apart from the objective to come up with a kitchen concept, attention will be given to study, compare and discuss the relation and compatibility between different methods and design philosophies.   The project resulted in a conceptual kitchen aimed to be suitable for nearly all people. The design was approached through various angles to obtain a broad variety of solutions, which was combined into one kitchen concept, to comply with the demands that a future user may have. The main aspects taken upon are the layout, storage solutions that require minimum effort and a stove and sink solution. The kitchen concept complies with the predetermined requirements set forth in the project specifications. Extra attention was put into the storage methods. Not necessarily in the amount, although most space was taken advantage of, but in the ways the user can use the storage spaces. The stove and sink are located on a height-adjustable platform for maximum comfort and adaptation to the user. The layout was determined according to the space needed for mobility, storage and function.

Co-design is a process that allows designers to develop products with greater insight to user needs through the participation of users in the design process. During this process what users say, make, and do is investigated using common research methods in combination with newer generative and exploratory approaches created for this purpose. Co-design encompasses many design practices. Despite the prevalence of the co-design process, a lack of studies into the education of designers on co-design have been implemented, leaving a gap of information that needs to be filled in order for co-design to become integrated into design education and practice. The purpose of this project is to understand the current state of co-design education in the U.S. and to assimilate popular teaching techniques, by surveying teaching methods of co-design within Industrial Design programs at U.S. Universities with reputations as leaders in the field. This project also aims to design a learning aid for Industrial Design students derived from the findings of interviews, materials review, and literature. A snowball sampling was performed with schools leaders in co-design. Schools were contacted and given a survey, interviewed with selected participants and assessed on their materials and practices on co-design. Various qualitative data analysis was performed with the surveys, interviews and materials. The conclusion includes a composite of common methods for teaching co-design, which are assembled into a learning aid artifact. The artifact incorporates findings into a practical outcome. The significance of this project is to further research into teaching methods of co-design as well as providing a common framework for design educators to follow in higher level learning institutions.

The field of subcellular proteomics aims to describe and analyze all the proteins present in a precise subcellular compartment at a given time. In contrast to whole-cell or whole-organism proteomics, the analysis of individual organelles has provided simpler proteomes from which relevant biological information could be more easily derived. To date, the protein complement of several subcellular structures, including the mitochondria, lysosome, peroxysome, phagosome and nucleus has been described. The powerful and rapidly evolving instrumentation as well as the development of biochemical and bioinformatics tools now allow scientists to derive whole organelle models based on the proteomic data generated. This field however still faces numerous challenges. Among those is the analysis of membrane-associated proteins, whose large and hydrophobic character complicate their extraction, subsequent separation and analysis by mass spectrometry. Another emerging limitation in subcellular proteomic resides in the difficulty in collecting enough material of a very pure preparation of the organelle of interest, which still depend on lengthy and labor-intensive density-based centrifugation as the method of choice for subcellular fractionation. The work presented in this thesis describes the development of new methods for subcellular proteomics that address the above-mentioned limitations, and their application to relevant biological models. In chapter 2, we present the design of a non-discriminatory investigative approach to study membrane proteins. Relying on detergent-free and gel-free procedures, this strategy allowed identification of hundreds of cell surface-exposed proteins from freshly ejaculated bovine spermatozoa, as presented in chapter 3. Diverging from traditional cell fractionation protocols, we have refined in chapter 4 a fluorescence-assisted organelle sorting method and have employed it to acquire the proteome of corticotropes-derived secretory granules. Semiconductor technologies have been a key to the growth in wireless communication over the past decade, bringing added convenience and accessibility through advantages in cost, size, and power dissipation. A better understanding of how an IC technology affects critical RF signal chain components will greatly aid the design of wireless systems and the development of process technologies for the increasingly complex applications that lie on the horizon. Many of the evolving applications will embody the concept of adaptive performance to extract the maximum capability from the RF link in terms of bandwidth, dynamic range, and power consumption-further engaging the interplay of circuits and devices is this design space and making it even more difficult to discern a clear guide upon which to base technology decisions. Rooted in these observations, this research focuses on two key themes: 1) devising methods of implementing RF circuits which allow the performance to be dynamically tuned to match real-time conditions in a power-efficient manner, and 2) refining approaches for thinking about the optimization of RF circuits at the device level. Working toward a 5.8 GHz receiver consistent with 1 GBit/s operation, signal path topologies and adjustable biasing circuits are developed for low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) and voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) to provide a facility by which power can be conserved when the demand for sensitivity is low. As an integral component in this effort, tools for exploring device level issues are illustrated with both circuit types, helping to identify physical limitations and design techniques through which they can be mitigated.

The design of two LNAs and four VCOs is described, each realized to provide a fully-integrated solution in a 0.5 tm SiGe BiCMOS process, and each incorporating all biasing and impedance matching on chip. Measured results for these 5-6GHz circuits allow a number of poignant technology issues to be enlightened, including an exhibition of the importance of terminal resistances and capacitances, a demonstration of where the transistor fT is relevant and where it is not, and the most direct comparison of bipolar and CMOS solutions offered to date in this frequency range. In addition to covering a number of new circuit techniques, this work concludes with some new views regarding IC technologies for RF applications.

Network design problems have been prevalent and popular in the operations research community for decades, because of their practical and theoretical significance. Due to the relentless progression of technology and the creative development of intelligent, efficient algorithms, today we are able to efficiently solve or give excellent heuristic solutions to many network design problem instances. The purpose of this work is to thoroughly examine and tackle two classes of highly complex network design problems which find themselves at the cutting edge of modern research. First we examine the stochastic incremental network design problem. This problem differs from traditional network design problems through the addition of both temporal and stochastic elements. We present a modeling framework for this class of problems, conduct a thorough theoretical analysis of the solution structure, and give insights into solution methods. Next we introduce the robust network design problem with decision-dependent uncertainties. Traditional stochastic optimization approaches shy away from randomness which is directly influenced by a user's decisions, due to the computational challenges that arise. We present a two-stage stochastic programming framework, noting that the complexity of this class of problems is derived from a highly nonlinear term in the first-stage objective function. This term is due to the decision-dependent nature of the uncertainty. We perform a rigorous computational study in which we implement various solution algorithms which are both exact and heuristic, as well as both well-studied and original. For each of the two classes of problems examined in our work, we give suggestions for future study and offer insights into effective ways of tackling these problems in practice.

In the modern enterprises it is common that support and maintenance of IT environments are outsourced to third parties. In this setting, unencrypted confidential data may pose a problem since administrators maintaining the outsourced system can access confidential information if stored unencrypted. This thesis work, performed at ELITS, presents a solution to this problem; a design of a collaborative storage system where all files at rest (i.e. stored on disk) and in transit remain encrypted is proposed. The design uses a hybrid encryption scheme to protect the encryption keys used. The keys can safely be stored in a centralized database as well as sent to the clients without risk of unauthorized parties gaining access to the stored data. The design was also implemented as a proof of concept in order to establish that it was possible to realize.

This thesis addresses the problem of setting up a surface mount placement machine for production. The objective is to minimize the number of machine changeovers made during a production run consisting of a number of circuit cards. The solution to the problem involves two separate decisions. The first decision considers determining how to combine feeders together in "bays" or groups of feeders, and how to assign the bays to the circuit cards. The second decision considers the circuit card production sequence. A mathematical programming formulation is given, however, its solution is very difficult for problems of a realistic size. Several heuristic approaches are suggested and used to solve actual and test problems. The heuristic for bay design uses clustering techniques used in Group Technology while the sequencing problem is solved using heuristics based on solution techniques for the Traveling Salesman problem.

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 mandates that middle school students be technologically literate by the end of 8th grade, but teachers need more information on how to make this outcome a reality. This qualitative phenomenological study used a constructivist theoretical framework to investigate teachers' descriptions of technological literacy outcomes, instructional practice, and challenges influencing middle school student technological literacy. Twelve teachers at 1 public middle school in a large urban area of Georgia were interviewed. Data were analyzed using the typological method with the inclusion of both inductive and predetermined categories. Teachers described technologically literate middle school students as able to perform basic computer skills and use those skills for research and problem-solving. Teachers' instructional practices included modeling and demonstration, hands-on practice, coaching, collaboration, and frequent assessment to achieve the outcome of student technological literacy. Challenges that can impede teachers' implementation of practices for technological literacy included lack of school support, equipment, time, and effective professional development. Recommendations to overcome challenges include increasing availability of equipment by providing better ways to schedule the computer laboratories and staff to monitor the equipment. Relevant up-to-date staff development and inclusion of technological literacy as a school goal were also suggested. This study may influence social change because it may help teachers improve practices to develop students' technological literacy skills necessary for successful employment in the 21 st century.

The thesis examines the evolution of mobile transceiver architecture using the management framework pioneered by Carliss Baldwin and Kim Clark. The thesis begins with an introduction and an overview of the wireless communication value network. The author subsequently distills the salient aspects of the Baldwin and Clark management framework predicated on bottleneck analysis, modularity, and return on invested capital. The prominence of bottleneck analysis motivates a technical chapter that summarizes the bottlenecks relevant to all wireless communication systems, namely data rate, error rate, and battery life. A brief chapter discussing the dominant wireless communication network architecture, TDMA and CDMA, corroborates the bottleneck analysis and effectively assigns the error rate and battery life bottlenecks to the handset ODM and supplier layers of the value network. With a clear vision of the competitive bottlenecks, the evolution of transceiver architecture is presented in the context of the aforementioned management framework. Through this analysis, design power is shown to have passed from handset ODMs to integrated circuit suppliers. A noteworthy byproduct of the analysis is the genesis of the bottleneck tree whereby new layers of bottlenecks are emergent upon a firm's selection of a particular design architecture that targets the strategic bottleneck layer. Finally, the thesis is concluded with a summary of the ground covered and the author's opinions of how the architecture may yet evolve and the future nature of the competitive landscape.

Observa-se, entretanto, que as propostas de captura e modelagem do processo de design em IHC provêem uma visão fragmentada e/ou incompleta deste processo. Por esta razão, propõe-se aqui um modelo epistêmico, baseado em Design Rationale (DR), adequado ao registro e modelagem do design de sistemas interativos. Com base na revisão e análise das principais visões e propostas do processo de design, seus requisitos, modelos, notações, linguagens de suporte foi proposto o modelo epistêmico Ideia. O modelo tem como principal objetivo registrar e comunicar as atividades de design de forma coesa, oferecendo subsídios para a reflexão da equipe de design sobre as atividades do processo de design, bem como informações de proveniência para a rastreabilidade das informações. Para isso, o modelo propõe a integração dos insumos e produtos (e.g., requisitos, modelos, artefatos) das atividades de design, oferecendo uma ponte entre as atividades de análise (espaço de problema) e de design conceitual (espaço de solução) por meio do DR. O modelo foi implementado no protótipo Deprost e adotado no design de parte de um sistema colaborativo, o sistema WikiMapps, possibilitando avaliar a proposta através de um estudo de caso sobre seu desempenho quanto ao que é proposto.
The design of interactive systems is a complex, iterative and collaborative process, composed of different activities that are interrelated in the composition of a final product and requires different expertise to perform it. The information produced during each activity is very important for the continuity of the process and to understand, explain and maintain the product produced. This information must be related and integrated in a clear and coherent speech, allowing traceability and addressing the origin and the context in which they were produced. It is noted, however, that the proposed process catch and modeling in HCI design provide a fragmented and/or incomplete view of this process. For this reason, we propose an epistemic model, based on Design Rationale (DR), suitable for the recording and modeling of the design of interactive systems. Based on the review and analysis of the key views and proposals of the design process, their requirements, models, notations and support languages, the epistemic model Ideia has been proposed. The model has as its main goal to register and report design activities in a cohesive manner, offering support for the reflection of the design team about the activities of the design process as well as information sources for the traceability of information. For this, the model proposes the integration of inputs and outputs (e.g., requirements, models, artifacts) of the activities of analysis (problem space) and the conceptual design (solution space) DR. The model was implemented in the Deprost prototype and adopted in the design of part of the WikiMapps project, allowing us to evaluate the proposal in a real case study.

There is an urgent need to reduce domestic energy consumption, particularly due to climate change. Domestic energy policies and research have been dominated by the assumption that technological provision will linearly save energy. Conventional attempts to move away from this approach have not gone far enough, tending to still assume that technological usage is a linear outcome of an individual’s rational decision-making. This thesis takes a significantly different approach by drawing on social practice theory and focusing on how everyday life is performed. Specifically, a Passivhaus housing development is adopted as a case study in investigating the everyday consequences of advancing dwelling design. Passivhaus is a German energy efficiency building standard, employing very different technologies relative to conventional UK housing. Specific attention is given to how unfamiliar technologies influence domestic practices more generally, as well as appliance-using practices and designing and constructing practices more specifically. This thesis has significant empirical, methodological and theoretical contributions. Empirically, everyday examples illustrate the unintended consequences of new technologies, providing insight on how such technologies could change practices in the future. Methodologically, by treating quantitative consumption-related data (e.g. building monitoring, appliance ownership, construction data) as by-products of performing practices, an innovative mixed methods approach provides unique insights on everyday practices. Theoretically, the potential usefulness of a practices approach is emphasised; in particular, in developing a detailed and contextual understanding of how everyday life is constructed and how it is open to change (often in unexpected ways). This thesis reiterates that research and policy should focus on practices, rather than technological performance or what individuals think about technologies. It concludes by: discussing a re-framing of policy expectations; outlining how energy saving interventions could target domestic practices and its influencing elements; and providing a series of new research ideas that have been generated by this thesis.

La presente tesis propone una solución tecnológica que automatice el proceso de monitoreo de los planes de acción generados para mejorar la tasa del logro de la competencia de aprendizaje de los estudiantes universitarios, con el objetivo de mejorar el proceso de evaluación por competencias. Nuestra propuesta permite el monitoreo automatizado de los planes de acción gracias a un sistema con características, tales como: (1) registro de los planes a través de formularios con un diseño de experiencia de usuario, (2) visualización y descarga de dashboards personalizados para cada nivel del plan de acción o, en general, con todos los planes de un usuario específico para el análisis y la toma de decisiones, (3) carga y descarga de evidencias sobre el cumplimiento de las acciones de mejora, (4) creación de informes para el seguimiento de planes de acción en formatos apropiados para facilitar la lectura, y (5) envío de notificaciones por correo electrónico sobre cualquier cambio en el plan. La propuesta se describe en dos partes: (1) la automatización del proceso de monitoreo, (2) las funcionalidades de la solución y (3) la arquitectura tecnológica diseñada. Con el fin de validar la propuesta, se desarrolló una encuesta para ser respondida por expertos de calidad educativa en una institución universitaria. Los resultados mostraron que el 93.8 % de los participantes consideran que la solución contribuye a la mejora del logro de las competencias, asimismo se demostró que el monitoreo de los planes de acción se realiza con un 99,6% de mayor eficiencia, lo que facilita su cumplimiento de acuerdo con los parámetros de costo, tiempo e impacto planificado, además, contribuye con la mejora continua de la evaluación basada en competencias.
This paper proposes a technological solution that automates the action plan monitoring process designed to improve the achievement rate of the learning competence on university students, with the objective of improving the process of evaluation by competencies. Our proposal allows the action plan automated monitoring thanks to a system with features, such as: (1) plan registration through forms with a user experience design, (2) custom dashboards display and download for each level of the action plan or, in general, with all the plans of a specific user for analysis and decision making, (3) loading and downloading of evidence on compliance of the improvement actions, (4) report creation for action plan monitoring in appropriate formats to facilitate reading, and (5) email notifications delivery about any changes to the plan. The proposal is described in two parts: (1) the automation of the monitoring process, (2) the solution functionalities and (3) the designed technological architecture. To validate the proposal, a survey was developed to perform it with functional analysts in a university institution. The results showed that 93.8% of the participants consider that the solution contributes to the improvement of the achievement of competencies, it was also demonstrated that the action plan monitoring is carried out with 99.6% more efficiency, which facilitates compliance with the cost, time and planned impact parameters also contributes to the competency-based evaluation continuous improvement.

PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) are IT systems used for distributing, viewing and archiving digital images in radiology. Sectra Imtec AB develops and markets Sectra's PACS systems as large enterprise solutions where the customers pay for hardware, software licenses and support. The background to the study was that interesting business opportunities lies in providing Sectra PACS as a hosted ASP (Application Service Provider) solution through the Internet. This solution would make it possible to run PACS clients connected to the same server on many different sites, requiring only an internet connection. It would decrease the need of on-site hardware, software and service. The purpose of the study is to investigate obstacles and opportunities for development, adaptation and integration of a hosted ASP solution for the current Sectra PACS and to develop a prototype based on these investigations. The method Case Study Research is used to develop a lo-fi (low fidelity) prototype for hosted ASP solution for Sectra PACS. User analysis is made through PACT (People, Activities, Contexts and Technologies) analysis, the stakeholder model and by visiting a clinic. Focus has been on developing a prototype where changes to the current Sectra PACS are kept on a minimum level. This has resulted in that the hosted ASP solution could be implemented without a lot of new development, only small changes in the current Sectra PACS are necessary. The lo-fi prototype provides an overview of the hosted ASP solution and covers different areas; from server configurations to client configuration and legal aspects.
