En el área de estudio se encontraron 15 especies ae abejas silvestres, mismas que se identificaron a género, siendo las más importantes, de acuerdo a su abundancia y al polen que portaban, 3 especies de Halictus, una de Colletes sp. y una de la tribu Hemisiini. A excepción de algunas de las abejas de las especies 2 y 3 de Halictus que colectaron polen ae Yucca filifera, el resto de las especies prefirieron pecorear en flores de compuestas y ae Larrea tridentata. La actividad más fuerte de estas abejas, en general, fue entre las 11 a.m. y 4 p.m. No se considera que algunas de las especies estuaiauas pudieran actuar como substituto del polinizador Tegeticula yucasella en Y. filifera.

[„Against the oath” – desertions in the Polish Army in 1944–1947] This article discusses the phenomenon of desertions in the Polish Army in the years 1944–1947. At that time it was a serious problem among soldiers, as the number of deserters can be estimated at around 30,000 people during this period. Of course, many factors influenced on the discipline and morale of the army, including political, economic, social or family conditions. The article describes the causes of desertion, its scale and trend of the phenomenon in the discussed period. The text also presents examples of so‑called collective desertions and actions taken by the communist authorities to limit this phenomenon in the army. With time, discipline began to improve and the number of desertions decreased. However, it was a process lasting several years.

A review of all known species of Dinetus Panzer, 1806 is given. Five species are described for the first time: D. arabicus sp. nov., D. deserticus sp. nov., D. jordanicus sp. nov., D. schmideggeri sp. nov. and D. vanharteni sp. nov. Separate keys for males and females of all known species are provided. The females of D. arabicus sp. nov. and D. schmideggeri sp. nov. and the males of D. cereolus Morice, 1897, D. deserticus sp. nov., D. hameri Notton, 2020, D. rakhimovi Mokrousov & Khedher, 2020, D. politus Turner, 1917 and D. vanharteni sp. nov. are unknown. With this, the total number of species increases to 21. Detailed distribution data of all examined species are presented, except the widely distributed D. pictus.

HONOR DISGRACED: PRE-WORLD WAR II DESERTIONS OF POLISH ARMY OFFICERS During the Interwar period, desertions plagued the Polish Army. Many officers were counted among the thousands of rank-and-file soldiers who deserted prior to 1939. The desertion of officers was the most shocking of all peacetime abandonments, as they were supposed to be patriotic leaders of the men under their command. Officers deserted for myriad reasons, including fear of prosecution for illicit behavior, such as theft, and the discovery of cooperation or collusion with foreign agents. Of all the officer desertions during this period, the most spectacular took place in 1930 when Major Stanisław Krauss defected to Belgium and France. In 1934, a French court sentenced him to 5 years in prison for spying on French forces for Germany. The trial hit press headlines worldwide.

Despite the strong interest in Polish-Czechoslovakian relations between 1918‒1939, the subject of desertions during this period from the Polish Army to Czechoslovakia, and vice-versa, has so far not been examined in detail by Polish historians. This article attempts to identify the similarities and differences that existed among deserters from the respective Armies. In addition to presenting the history of these deserters, this study also considers the causes and consequences of these military desertions.

Desertia gen. nov., which belongs to tribe Massonieae, is described from south western Namibia and north western South Africa. Desertia is at first sight related to Whiteheadia and Massonia, but it can be clearly differentiated by the papillose bracts, subcampanulate flowers with straight, suberect or slightly spreading free portion of tepals and the rugose seeds. This genus is based on Whiteheadia etesionamibensis, for which the combination in Desertia is presented. Furthermore, a second species in the genus, D. luteovirens, is here described based on distinct morphological and molecular characters. Furthermore, taxonomic revisions are presented for Namophila and Whiteheadia, including identification keys for the three genera and data on morphology, ecology, and distribution for all accepted species.

A new estimate of U.S. marital disruptions shows an increase in desertions relative to divorces after 1900. Desertions were the more volatile component of marital disruptions because of their greater responsiveness to general economic conditions. Large marriage cohorts, formed in the years of economic expansion, disrupted in greater numbers: an increase in the marriage rate by 10 per 1,000 unmarried women raised the proportion of disrupted marriages by 7.3 percentage points. Conversely, during years of recession, many poorer couples were discouraged from marriage; smaller marriage cohorts with more resilient marriages were formed and their lifetime marriage disruption rate was lower.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Imaging Hyperspectral data are advent as potential solutions in modeling, discrimination and mapping of vegetation species. Hyperspectral remote sensing provides valuable information about vegetation type, leaf area index, chlorophyll, and leaf nutrient concentration. Estimation of these vegetation parameters has been made possible by calculating various vegetation indices (VIs), usually by ratioing, differencing, ratioing differences and combinations of suitable spectral band. This paper presents a ground-based hyperspectral imaging system for characterizing vegetation spectral features. In this study, a ground-based hyperspectral imaging data (AISA VNIR 400&amp;ndash;960&amp;thinsp;nm, Spectral Resolution @ 2.5&amp;thinsp;nm) was used for spectral vegetation discrimination and characterization of natural desertic tree species. This study assessed the utility of hyperspectral imagery of 240 narrow bands in discrimination and classification of desert tree species in Jodhpur region using ENVI software. Vegetation indices derived from hyperspectral images used in the Analysis for tree species classification discrimination study. Prominent occurring two desertic tree species, viz., Neem and Babul in Jodhpur region could be effectively discriminated. Study demonstrated the potential utility of narrow spectral bands of Hyperspectral Imaging data in discriminating vegetation species in a desertic terrain.</p>

Dunes and sand sheets motion natural hazard affect many desertic areas worldwide and require careful assessment to develop effective mitigation plans to protect populated sites, infrastructure, and human activities. The study explores the suitability of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) coherent methods to detect desert area instabilities and estimate sand accumulations displacements. The SAR methods have been applied to long time series of images provided by Sentinel-1. Moreover, the research introduces a novel robust index, named Temporal Stability Index, able to characterize the percentage of stability of a target with time. The work reports the experiments performed on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt desertic areas and proves the usefulness of SAR coherent methods to support sand mitigation measures.

Wildlife ecologists have extensively used the identification of epidermal fragments recovered from digestive tracts and feces to determine the diet of various animals. Archaeologists, however, generally have not used this technique to identify botanical remains recovered from archaeological contexts. This article points out the accessibility of literature needed to conduct microscopic epidermal identification, reviews the methods and techniques, provides distinctions of such identifications on reference samples of some common desertic plants (yucca, agave, prickly pear, sotol, onion, and grass), and compares these reference samples to epidermal fragments from archaeological paleofeces.

El estudio de las comunidades de roedores se realizó en la Resen/a de la Biosfera de Mapimí durante 1977,1978 y 1979 en las unidades fisonómico florísticas del Magueyal, Nopalera y Pastizal, en donde se localizaron 10 especies de roedores, siendo Dipodomys merriami, Perognathus nelsoni, Neotoma albigula y Peromyscus eremicus las especies que tuvieron una mayor distribución en la reserva. Se analizó la densidad de las poblaciones en cada una de las comunidades utilizando el método de captura-recaptura, encontrando que los géneros Perognathus y Dipodomys fueron los que tuvieron las poblaciones más numerosas. En la nopalera se encontró una diversidad de especies mayor y en el pastizal la riqueza específica fue mayor, aunque sus densidades fueron menores que en las otras zonas. Sin embargo la dominancia de los heterómldos fue evidente, llegando a veces a constituir hasta el 70% de la comunidad. Durante estos años de estudio, la densidad de las especies dependió tanto de la precipitación como del hábitat.

Tempo e spazio si dilatano o restringono a seconda della prospettiva interiore del personaggio, in una perfetta unione di circolarità e linearità; ugualmente, anche lo spazio sembra oscillare tra Fortezza e deserto per poi subire improvvise verticalizzazioni. Diversity of Frankia microsymbionts of non-native Elaeagnus angustifolia L. plants spontaneously growing in a Tunisian desertic retreat area, the date-palm oasis of Tozeur, was investigated by polymerase chain reaction – restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) and PCR-sequencing techniques targeting the nifD-K intergenic spacer. Three PCR–RFLP haplotypes (I, II, and III) were detected among collected nodules. Haplotype I was detected at all five sampling sites and dominated the other haplotypes present at these sites. This haplotype was also exhibited by strain BMG5.10, which was isolated by a plant-capturing assay in 1998 from soil collected in the same locality, qualifying it to be the most competitive haplotype in the edapho-climatic condition of the studied desertic date-palm oasis. nifD-K sequences of the three haplotypes formed a closely related phylogenetic subgroup. These results suggest that Frankia variability is constrained by severe edapho-climatic conditions of retreated desert in Tunisian area.

The article discusses the activities of the NKVD and the prosecutor’s office to ensure the mobilization and suppression of desertions from the construction of the Kuibyshev defensive line. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the experience of the activities of the NKVD structures and the prosecutor’s office, aimed at ensuring defensive construction in the extreme realities of military operations, is an indispensable source for military engineers of the Russian Federation. Based on the introduction into scientific circulation of previously secret archival documents from the funds of RGASPI, SOGASPI and GANI UO, they paid attention to the process of building a defensive line, the situation of the mobilized and analyzed the problems of the activities of the NKVD and the prosecutor’s office. It was revealed that the employees of the internal affairs bodies and the prosecutor’s office, in order to prevent desertions, first of all sought to normalize the supply of workers with food, clothing and equipment, the establishment of exact production standards, based on the gender and age characteristics of the builders. In the course of the work, it was proved that by mid-December 1941 the repressive policy had been curtailed, and local authorities took measures to improve the food supply for workers.

The taking of vows in a military order, as in other religious foundations, created a lifelong obligation. The phrasestabilitas loci, which is encountered in some documents relating to these orders, did not imply an undertaking to stay permanently in the same convent, but signified that those who had made their profession should remain in the same order for life. This requirement found expression especially in papal decrees, although orders' regulations give information about the punishment of apostates. As in other religious establishments, a transfer to another order provided the sole permitted exception, but this was allowed only under certain conditions.

Abstract. Detecting temporal changes is one of the most important applications of satellite sensors. In recent years, the increasing availability of regular time-series of SAR imagery, provided by the Sentinel-1 mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), has drawn increasing attention to these techniques, especially in earth environment monitoring and risk management. Within this paper, a coherent change detection analysis for evaluating the risk due to movements of dunes and sand sheets in desertic areas is proposed. To this purpose, we introduce a novel, coherence-based index, named Temporal Stability Index (TSI), that is suited for characterizing the percentage of stability of a target with time. TSI maps can be generated over areas as wide as hundreds of kilometers, in a short time, and mostly by exploiting available software tools (plus some simple coding). Results of analysis performed on two desertic regions (the United Arab Emirates and Egypt) document the usefulness of TSI for the identification of dune movements and areas subject to sand accumulation, supporting risk mitigation measures.

Анотація:
Application of extremophilic plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) and their enzymes in bioremediation have been received increasing interest due to their eco-friendly nature and effectiveness for bio treatment of diverse industrial micro pollutants. In this work, the azo-dye decolorization potential of halophilic PGPB Halomonas desertis G11 was evaluated and optimized using central composite experimental design and response surface methodology. Interestingly, the increase of pH and NaCl concentration accelerated the dye decolorization. The model predicted a maximum removal of BEZACTIV blue S-2G dye (80%) at optimal operating conditions (dye concentration of 50 mg/L, inoculum size of 1.0%, pH of 8.2, NaCl of 5.0% and incubation time of 10 days). The experimental design model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data, thereby providing the soundness of the developed model. The biodecolorization under pressures of high salinity and alkalinity seems to be correlated to azoreductase activity. The gene encoding FMN-dependent NADH azo-reductase from halophilic bacterium H. desertis G11 was identified and the structure and catalytic mechanism of dye decolorizing enzyme were elucidated. Results of this study provide evidence for the potential application of this azoreductase producing extremophilic bacterium as a novel candidate in the biological treatment of sediments and wastewaters contaminated by azo-dyes.

The study was carried out on the use of dens by the desert fox in the desertic environment at Jajiwal Dhora and Guda Bhakri study sites in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. Dens played a vital role in protecting desert fox and their pups from adverse environmental conditions. During study period total 104 dens were recorded out of them, 42 were resting dens and 62 were breeding dens. At Jajiwal Dhora study site 72 dens were observed and at Guda Bhakari study site 32 dens were noted. The desert fox used the dens for pup rearing, resting and saving themselves from different climatic factors such as heavy rain, dust storms, warm air and coldness. Desert fox use the den according to the seasonal changes. Northern-facing dens were mainly used during summer, while southern-facing dens were used in winter. The rodents, birds and bushes dominated areas and agricultural fields were mainly preferred by the desert fox for digging the dens. Direct observation, questionnaire and interview methods were used for the investigation.

ABSTRACT Brachiopods are described for the first time from outcrops of the lower part of the Midhnab Member of the Khuff Formation in central Saudi Arabia. The very rare fauna discovered includes Kotlaia sp. ind. of the order Orthida and Omanilasma husseinii n. gen. n. sp. of the order Terebratulida. Besides this new taxon, another new species Omanilasma desertica n. gen. n. sp. from the Khuff Formation of Interior Oman is here erected. The brachiopods were collected from an open-marine horizon and are associated with nautiloids, bactritids, bivalves, foraminifers, algae, and ostracods. A probable Late Permian age is assigned to the lower part of the Midhnab Member based on foraminifers. The brachiopods are compared to similar faunas from the Middle Permian Khuff Formation of Interior Oman, Amb Formation of Salt Range (Pakistan) and Rat Buri Limestone of Southeast Thailand.

Its complete absence in the western (Gujarat and Rajasthan) and north-western parts of India today indicates drastic climatic changes in the region since the time of deposition of the fossil.

Stanisław Kulik was a pre-war professional non-commissioned officer of armored troops. He fought in September 1939, escaped from the German captivity, in a conspiracy in the Lublin region, he became a commander of a partisan unit, he was decorated many times. In 1945, he organized one of the biggest desertions from the Polish „folk” army. He continued his underground activity in the Lublin region. From September 1945 to March 1946, he was the commander of the underground movement in Pomerania, operating under the name KD-111. He was arrested and murdered on December 28th, 1946 in Gdańsk.

The article examines the impact of social, economic and political changes of the second half of 18th century and the beginning of 19th century on the functioning of rural society of Lesser Poland province. The study considers the situation of peasants, nobles and the clergy. The first part of the article presents the state of research on the problem and the available sources. The second part is devoted to the presentation of selected examples of social relations observed in contemporary Lesser Poland rural society. Conflicts between landowners and lease owners over abused peasant labour, debates over tithes, abuses of state officials and peasant resistance (i.e. peasant desertions, court cases) are discussed.

Peruvian political parties have become electoral organizations that make use of unaffiliated candidates to gain votes. This situation makes them completely dependent on outsiders to stand out in an election and preserve their inscription. However, this causes the existence of many cases of party desertions of unaffiliated officials whose party loyalty is exceptionally low, thus diminishing the party influence and strength. Free Peru and Pedro Castillo’s relation is the most representative instance of this phenomenon, made clear since the presidential elections of 2021 up until the subsequent party fracture and creation of new parliamentary groups that have set their interests above those of the party that originally brought them to power.

The production of isolated metallic nanoparticles with multifunctionalized properties, such as size and shape, is crucial for biomedical, photocatalytic, and energy storage or remediation applications. This study investigates the initial particle formations of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) bioproduced in the cyanobacteria Anabaena sp. using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images for digital image analysis. The developed method enabled the discovery of cerium nanoparticles (CeNPs), which were biosynthesized in the cyanobacteria Calothrix desertica. The particle size distributions for AuNPs and CeNPs were analyzed. After 10 h, the average equivalent circular diameter for AuNPs was 4.8 nm, while for CeNPs, it was approximately 5.2 nm after 25 h. The initial shape of AuNPs was sub-round to round, while the shape of CeNPs was more roundish due to their amorphous structure and formation restricted to heterocysts. The local PSDs indicate that the maturation of AuNPs begins in the middle of vegetative cells and near the cell membrane, compared to the other regions of the cell.

AbstractBy studying British Indian Army [BIA] desertions during World War II, and British postwar trial responses, this paper explores the complicated dimensions of desertion and draws attention to the need for a more explicit and comprehensive approach to desertion in international humanitarian law. The paper focuses on less known British trials dealing with desertion, namely, war crimes trials conducted by the British in Singapore. It examines how these trials dealt with contested interpretations of desertion. Drawing on lessons from these trials, the paper then highlights gaps in today’s international humanitarian law framework, specifically, the need to take into account the realities of desertion, its different permutations, and the difficulties of differentiating between prisoners of war [POWs] and deserters.

Behavioural factors associated with lamb mortality were examined in regard to the relative effects of age and parity in single-bearing Merino ewes. Primiparas tended to have longer labour and higher lamb mortality than multiparous ewes. Maternal behaviour in primiparas was characterised by more desertions, a smaller proportion that stood and started to groom their lambs immediately after birth, and a larger proportion with non-cooperative behaviour during the initial sucking attempts of the lamb. These traits, and a high incidence of malpresentations, were particularly marked in 5-year-old primiparas deliberately denied access to rams in previous seasons. There was no evidence of improved maternal behavioural attributes associated with increasing age of ewe that were independent of previous experience in giving birth and rearing lambs.

Two fossil woods collected from the late Neogene sediments of Rajasthan show best resemblance to the modern genera Terminalia L. and Lagerstroemia L. of the families Combretaceae and Lythraceae, respectively. The fossils belong to the Shumar Formation of Jaisalmer Basin considered as Plio–Pleistocene in age. The habitats of the modern counterparts of the fossils indicate the prevalence of semi–evergreen to deciduous forests with warm and humid climatic conditions in the Jaisalmer District at the time of deposition of the sediments in contrast to the present day xeric vegetation with desertic conditions in the area.

For the vast majority of men and women in seventeenth-century England the act of marriage created an indissoluble union and represented a life long commitment. Legal divorce was a lengthy and costly procedure which discriminated against women, and informal separations or desertions were socially frowned upon and often economically disadvantageous. So marital discord had to be overcome before it deteriorated into a situation of marriage breakdown. Elaborate ways of restoring and maintaining marital harmony were established through use of the cucking stool and ‘charivari’. By these means, public attention was focused upon behaviour which caused discord: the scolding wife was punished and the husband who was a cuckold or had been beaten by his wife, humiliated. Meanwhile, conduct books proffered advice to couples on how to avoid such marital discontent and its consequences.

This paper has as aim to describe the perception of higher-level students about the importance of affectivity in virtual environments. This study had a quantitative research focus with a cross-sectional descriptive scope and a participation of 110 students. A typical performance instrument was used whose reliability was calculated using Cronbach’s alpha (0.970). The results show that 85% of the higher-level student’s considerer important the implementation of affectivity in the teaching learning process; also, it was detected as opportunity area that teachers can give a more precise accompaniment to academic performance of the students, this with the objective to being able to avoid anguish or desertions when working remotely. The results are important to consider in future training to development of affective competences in virtual environments to higher-level students and teachers.

Desalination is a viable solution to the 21th century´s shortage of freshwater. The most widely used desalination processes are thermal and membrane. Other modern techniques apply solar and electrical energy for evaporation and electrodialysis. Many desalination plants (DP) are located in desertic/arid regions with a harsh climate and limited rainfall. About one-fifth of the DPs operate in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia producing half of the world desalted water. The final selection of materials of construction for plant equipment must be a compromise between technological and economic factors. Corrosion problems and their solutions in several DPs in the Middle East, USA and Mexico are presented.
