Повний текст джерелаIn 1912, the German meteorologist Wegener presented a theory based on a new conception of the terrestrial globe: continents, floating on a more fluid layer, are mobile on the surface of the globe. United into a single continent, in the past, the continental masses were separated by the play of fractures that become oceans, the continents drifting to their present position. Wegener intends to go beyond two conceptions, irreconcilable, which then divide geologists. In France, continental drift was presented to the public by the Swiss geologist Elie Gagnebin in 1922, while geologists mobilized during the Great War continued to boycott German scientists, particularly during the International Geological Congress in Brussels, the same year. As soon as Wegener's hypothesis was revealed, it was discussed by French geologists, who gave him a cautious welcome, without excessive hostility. However, in the 1930s, when geologists abandoned it, actors from other disciplines found interest in theory to explain the distribution of living beings, present or fossil, on the surface of continents At the same time, continental drift, because it is easily accessible to understanding and mobilizes varied evidences, is spreading among « science amateurs », teachers and the « general public ». Повний текст джерелаThe paleogeographic evolution during the Ediacaran is dominated by the dispersion of Rodinia and the assembly of Gondwana. Paleogeographic reconstructions for this epoch are still highly debated due the low amount of reliable paleomagnetic data. The most documented but also the most problematic database cornes from the continent Laurentia which displays fast large oscillations of the paleomagnetic poles from high to low latitudes between 615 and 565 Ma. Such oscillations, if interpreted as plate drift, imply extremely high plate velocities which are inconsistent with plate tectonics. Less conventional hypothesis have been proposed in literature such as the oscillation of a magnetic field dominated by an equatorial and an axial dipole or True Polar Wander episodes, the latter implying large tumbling of the bulk Earth with respect to its spin axis. If one of these two mechanisms occurred, the rapid and large oscillations observed for Laurentia should be recorded in any other rocks of the same age from other continents. In this study, we tested these hypotheses by bringing new paleomagnetic data on Ediacaran and Cambrian volcanic series from another continent, the West African Craton (WAC). We identified a Hercynian remagnetization and two paleomagnetic components which could be of Ediacaran/Cambrian age. By comparing these results with those from literature, we constructed an apparent polar wander path for the WAC where we identified a large oscillation from 615 to 565 Ma, comparable to one of those observed for Laurentia. This oscillation is also observed in other continents and is consistent with geological constraints on the relative position of these continents. Therefore, it seems that this oscillation is a global feature and implies velocities compatible with the TPW hypothesis or with the oscillation of an Earth magnetic field dominated by an equatorial and axial dipole. We tested the True Polar Wander hypothesis by integrating the paleogeographic reconstructions we propose in this study into simple mantle dynamics models. These results seem compatible with such a mechanism even if we cannot exclude that perturbations of the Earth magnetic field could have occurred during the Ediacaran

Повний текст джерелаTwo-dimensional numerical models of mantle convection are carried out, with conductive rigid plates introduced to modell continents. The continental lid strongly modifies the mantle flow, inducing the formation of a set of hot plumes under the lid, wich feeds a large cellular circulation. The reduced mantle heat loss in this context can be ascribed both to the thermal blanketing effect of the continent and to the fact that the continent generates a long wavelength pattern of convection. Mantle heat flow under the continent is always very low. The pattern of convection defines the efficiency of the heat transport. Therefore the fact that continents can be either aggregated in one supercontinent or separated on the Earth surface must imply some important changes in the Earth thermal history

Повний текст джерелаThis study proposes an analysis of the morphological evolution and recent sedimentary processes of the south Aquitaine inner shelf (south east Bay of Biscay, France). This area is greatly documented but improvement of our knowledge is needed for a better understanding.Two complementary study areas are analyzed: « La Salie-Biscarrosse » area of the south-Aquitaine inner shelf (in a water depth extending from 5 to 50 m), and the head of the Capbreton Canyon (in a water depth extending from 5 to 120 m). Two approaches are used:(1) a descriptive and comparative analysis of the geophysical and sedimentological data setsand (2) a numerical modeling taking into account swell, current and sediments. The results obtained allow the description and the interpretation of the morphology, the nature, the internal geometry of the sedimentary structures, and their evolution along the last 29 years(between 1984 and 2013). The major result highlights the presence of sorted bedforms maintained by the swell, migrating northeastward and associated with the recent discovery of punctual poleward current on the shelf. The seafloor morphology of the Capbreton Canyonhead located only 250 m off the coastline, has experienced significant changes between 1998 and 2013, nonetheless it oscillates around a position of equilibrium. Furthermore, the influence of the littoral drift on sediment transfer from the shelf to the canyon was demonstrated. Sedimentary and morphological evidences combined with numerical modelingattest to the feeding of the Capbreton canyon head with coastal sand supplied by the southward long shore drift under high-energy wave conditions

Several fluid evidences related to the microbial system at the edge of the Aquitaine Shelf, such as authigenic carbonates and gas-charged layers extend from the external shelf until the upper part of the continental slope. Based on regional horizon geometry, geochemical evidences and potential migration pathways, the organic source matter for microbial methane is most likely located within the last upper Pleistocene clinoforms of the South Aquitaine margin. Occurrence of potential buried fluid evidence at the east of the fluid system is interpreted as potential evidence for initiation of this fluid system during the Pliocene age. The fluid system initiation and its evolution would be strongly related to the evolution/progradation of the South Aquitaine Margin and thus to the sedimentary regime controlling sediment and organic matter supplies to the shelf and upper continental slope. This relation explains the fact that such fluid system is unique in the Bay of Biscay and is restricted to the South Aquitaine Margin
