Abstract In the present paper, we introduce the notion of generalized multiplicative derivation in a near-ring N and investigate commutativity of 3-prime near-rings, showing that certain conditions involving generalized multiplicative derivations force N to be a commutative ring. In this paper, we modify the result of M. N. Daif [1] on multiplicative derivations in rings. He showed that the multiplicative derivation is additive by imposing certain conditions on the ring ℜ. Here, we have proved the above result with lesser conditions than M. N. Daif for getting multiplicative derivation to be additive.

We study some properties of permuting tri-derivations on semiprime G-rings with a certain assumption. Let M be a 3-torsion free semiprime G-ring satisfying a certain assumption and let I be a non-zero ideal of M. Suppose that there exists a permuting tri-derivation D: M×M´M ? M such that d is an automorphism commuting on I and also d is a trace of D. Then we prove that I is a nonzero commutative ideal. In the present paper, we introduce the notion of (σ, τ)-n-derivation in near-ring N and investigate some properties involving (σ, τ)-n-derivations of a prime near-ring N which force N to be a commutative ring. Additive commutativity of near-ring N satisfying certain identities involving (σ, τ)-n-derivations of a prime near-ring N has also been obtained. Related examples to justify the hypotheses in various theorems have also been provided.

As a consequence, we characterize the decomposition structure of bi-Lie n-derivations on upper triangular matrix rings.</p></abstract>

The main goal of this thesis is to present the theory of Locally Nilpotent Derivations and to show how it can be used to investigate the structure of the polynomial ring in two variables k[X;Y] over a field k of characteristic zero. The thesis gives a com- plete proof of Rentschler's Theorem, which describes all locally nilpotent derivations of k[X;Y]. Then we present Rentschler's proof of Jung's Theorem, which partially describes the group of automorphisms of k[X;Y]. Finally, we present the proof of the Structure Theorem for the group of automorphisms of k[X;Y].

We will extend the conjugacy problem of maximal toral subalgebras for Lie algebras of the form $\g{g} \otimes_k R$ by considering $R=k[t,t^{-1}]$ and $R=k[t,t^{-1},(t-1)^{-1}]$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and $\g{g}$ is a direct limit Lie algebra. In the process, we study properties of infinite matrices with entries in a B\'zout domain and we also look at how our conjugacy results extend to universal central extensions of the suitable direct limit Lie algebras.

The present dissertation furnishes a detailed study about modules of logarithmic derivations, here dubbed tangential idealizers, and some of their main features. Initially, several comparisons between such modules are investigated starting from sufficiently related ideals, motivated by a previous study due to Kaplansky as well as by their close relationship with the classical theory of differential ideals of Seidenberg. We then obtain the first central result, which describes a primary decomposition of the tangential idealizer of an ideal without embedded primary component. Finally, in the second main result, we explore the structure of the derivation module for the class of Stanley-Reisner rings, thus corresponding to tangential idealizers of monomial ideals. An application of such a result is an affirmative answer for the homological Zariski-Lipman conjecture for the present class of rings.
A presente dissertação fornece um estudo detalhado sobre módulos de derivações logarítmicas, aqui denominados idealizadores tangenciais, bem como algumas de suas principais características. Inicialmente, várias comparações entre tais módulos são investigadas, a partir de ideais suficientemente relacionados, motivadas por um estudo prévio de Kaplansky e por sua estreita relação com a clássica teoria dos ideais diferenciais de Seidenberg. Em seguida obtém-se o primeiro resultado central, que descreve uma decomposição primária do idealizador tangencial de um ideal sem componente primária imersa. Finalmente, no segundo resultado principal, é explorada a estrutura do módulo de derivações para a classe de anéis de Stanley- Reisner, correspondendo portanto a idealizadores tangenciais de ideais monomiais. Uma aplicação de tal resultado é a resposta afirmativa para a conjectura homológica de Zariski-Lipman para a presente classe de anéis.

Mopan (Mayan, Belize/Guatemala) has two noun classifiers that resemble gender markers. However, the gender markers (GMs) violate expectations about canonical gender (Corbett and Fedden 2016): only a minority of Mopan nouns are gendered; gender is marked only together with the noun, not in multiple syntactic domains; gender marking can be omitted in certain syntactic contexts; and gender marking can be introduced when a normally non-gendered noun co-occurs with an adjectival modifier. We address the grammatical and discourse functions of Mopan GMs in relation to their non-canonical properties. Two productive functions—use as honorific titles with proper names and derivation of agentive nominals—are extended to various functions involving agentivity and differentiation, e.g. derivation of descriptive terms for non-human implements and terms for varietal subcategories. GMs are also employed creatively in discourse, e.g. to suggest animacy of inanimates or to introduce sex differentiation where it would not otherwise be signalled.

This chapter extends the case study on quantum mechanics to include not only the ‘top-down’ application of group theory to quantum physics but also the ‘bottom-up’ construction of models of the phenomena, with the example of London’s explanation of the superfluid behaviour of liquid helium in terms of Bose–Einstein statistics. We claim that in moving from top to bottom, from the mathematics to what is observed in the laboratory, the models involved and the relations between them can again be accommodated by the partial structures approach, coupled with an appreciation of the heuristic moves involved in scientific work. Furthermore, as in the previous examples, this case fits with our inferential account of the application of mathematics, whereby immersion of the phenomena into the relevant mathematics allows for the drawing down of structure and the derivation of certain results that can then be interpreted at the phenomenological level.

Whitehead’s accounts of perception are arguably amongst his most important philosophical legacies. His notions of ‘causal efficacy’, ‘presentational immediacy’, and ‘symbolic reference’ offer a direct challenge to the various schools of thought derived from Hume and Kant, in which causation is seen as a pale derivation from the ‘sensationalist’ vivid impressions of immediate atomic sense-data presented to consciousness. Whitehead ties his account of perception not only to a certain conception of causality and time, but also to a generalized or originary account of symbolism. Originary symbolism is the power to affect or be affected, an exposure to what happens as the condition not just for language, experience, or even God in Whitehead’s sense, but for all becoming and life.This critique of ‘natural perception’ and the generalization of an ‘originary’ differential structure is also taken up and developed in great detail and complexity in the work of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Contrasting Whitehead’s account of originary symbolism with Deleuze will enable the drawing out of some of the radical innovations and variations of the process view with regard to perception and life.

Situating Keiller, Sebald, and Sinclair as the three leading voices in ‘English psychogeography’, this book examines what, apart from a shared interest in English landscape and townscape, connects their work; it discovers this in the cultivation of a certain ‘affective’ mode or sensibility especially attuned to the cultural anxieties of the twentieth century’s closing decades. As it goes on, the book explores motifs including ‘essayism’, the reconciliation of creativity with ‘market forces’, and the foregrounding of an often agonised or melancholic subjectivity. It wonders whether the work it looks at can, collectively, be seen to constitute a ‘critical theory of contemporary space’. In the process, it suggests that Keiller, Sebald, and Sinclair represent a highly significant moment in English culture’s engagement with landscape, environment, and itself. There are six chapters in all, with two devoted to each subject: one to their early years and less well-known work; and another to their more famous later contributions, including important works such as Patrick Keiller’s London (1994), W.G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn (1995), and Iain Sinclair’s Lights Out for the Territory (1997). The book’s analyses are fuelled by archival and topographical research carried out in London and Germany and are responsive to various interdisciplinary contexts, including the tradition of the ‘English Journey’, the set of ideas associated with the ‘spatial turn’, critical theory, the so-called ‘heritage debate’ in Britain, and more recent theorization of the ‘anthropocene’. In all, the book suggests the various ways that a dialectical relationship between dwelling and displacement has been exploited as a means to attempt subjective reorientation within the axiomatically disorientating conditions of contemporary modernity.

AbstractStable carbon isotopes in tree-rings are not only useful to derive climatic information of the past. Based on the isotope fractionations during uptake and fixation of CO2, physiological information can be retrieved, namely the ratio of assimilation to stomatal conductance, which is termed the intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE). This crucial plant physiological trait varies among species and environments and is characteristic of how much water is lost from leaves for a certain carbon gain. iWUE is of great importance at the scale of individual plants because it can determine plant performance and survival. iWUE also contributes how closely canopy- or ecosystem-scale carbon and water fluxes are coupled or divergent, which has implications for understanding biogeochemical cycling. Carbon isotopes in tree-rings can be used to estimate how iWUE of trees has changed in the past, e.g. due to increasing CO2, nitrogen or other factors. Accordingly, many applications have explored this tool for various forest ecosystems across the globe, often reporting a strong increase in iWUE over the twentieth century. Explicit comparisons of tree-ring iWUE to growth-data obtained from the same rings can help distinguish among strategies plants employ under various environmental impacts, like increasing CO2, light limitation, drought or too much water. In this chapter, we describe the theory behind iWUE, show some limitations of the method, give examples of the combined application of iWUE and tree-ring width, discuss photosynthetic limitations of iWUE and finally show how the method has been applied in large-scale tree-ring networks.

AbstractMany applications of particle accelerators require beam cooling, which refers to a reduction of the beam phase space volume or an increase in the beam density via dissipative forces. In electron and positron storage rings cooling naturally occurs due to synchrotron radiation, and special synchrotron-radiation damping rings for the production of low-emittance beams are an integral part of electron-positron linear colliders. For other types of particles different cooling techniques are available. Electron cooling and stochastic cooling of hadron beams are used to accumulate beams of rare particles (such as antiprotons), to combat emittance growth (e.g., due to scattering on an internal target), or to produce beams of high quality for certain experiments. Laser cooling is employed to cool ion beams down to extremely small temperatures. Here the laser is used to induce transitions between the ion electronic states and the cooling exploits the Dopper frequency shift. Electron beams of unprecedentedly small emittance may be obtained by a different type of laser cooling, where the laser beam acts like a wiggler magnet. Finally, designs of a future muon collider rely on the principle of ionization cooling. Reference [1] gives a brief review of the principal ideas and the history of beam cooling in storage rings; a theoretical dicussion and a few practical examples can be found in [2].

A vectorial method has been developed to solve the quasi-static equilibrium in angular contact ball bearings. In the quai-static model the effects induced by the centrifugal forces, gyroscopic moments and misalignments between bearing’s rings were considered. The lubricant parameters, traction forces and fluid drag action on balls and raceways were further included in a quasi-dynamic model. An experimental study has been further carried out to validate the quasi-dynamic model when a certain degree of misalignment exists between the inner and outer rings of the bearing. Both numerical simulation and experimental measurements emphasized the major contribution of the rings misalignment upon the bearing power loss.

The simplest strategy for extremum seeking-based source localization, for sources with unknown spatial distributions and nonholonomic unicycle vehicles without position measurement, employs a constant positive forward speed. Steering of the vehicle in the plane is performed using only the variation of the angular velocity. While keeping the forward speed constant is a reasonable strategy motivated by implementation with aerial vehicles, it leads to complexities in the asymptotic behavior of the vehicle, since the vehicle cannot settle—at best it can converge to a small-size attractor around the source. In this paper we regulate the forward velocity, with the intent of bringing the vehicle to a stop, or as close to a stop as possible. The vehicle speed is controlled using simple derivative-like feedback of the sensor measurement (the derivative is approximated with a washout filter) to which a speed bias parameter Vc is added. The angular velocity is tuned using standard extremum seeking. We prove two results. For Vc in a certain range around zero, we show that the vehicle converges to a ring around the source and on average the limit of the vehicle’s heading is either directly away or towards the source. For other values of Vc &gt; 0, the vehicle converges to a ring around the source and it revolves around the source. Interestingly, the average heading of this revolution around the source is more outward than inward—this is possible because the vehicle’s speed is not constant, it is lower during the outward steering intervals and higher during the inward steering intervals. The theoretical results are illustrated with simulations.

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in retaining rings of generators has been a major issue since large generator manufactures started to advise generator owners to replace and inspect retaining rings made from certain materials in the mid 1990’s. KEMA has been inspecting generator retaining rings with automated systems from the seventies on. Since 1995 new developments led to the possibility of also testing rings in situ, eliminating the need of removing the rotor from the stator and thus saving considerable down-time. Over the years, step by step improvements to the system and its application to generator retaining ring inspections have been implemented, one of which is the use of smaller probes and manipulators. Another improvement is the implementation of eddy current testing (ECT) to increase the detection capability for cracking at the outside surface in parallel to the automated ultrasonic testing (AUT). Experience obtained with this method contradicts some of the common ideas about reliability of other Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, in particular the application of Dye Penetrant inspection (DPI) which appears to be less reliable. By performing fracture mechanics calculations to evaluate detected and sized flaw indications, predictions of remaining life of the rings can be made (Fitness-for-Purpose analysis). This paper presents results of applying the in situ retaining ring inspection system in the last 14 years and gives an overview of cases — some of those from recent inspections — where defect indications were detected, sized and evaluated. In some cases this resulted in recommendations to replace the retaining rings.

Oil sealing in a turbocharger is a key design challenge. Under certain engine operating conditions oil in the lubrication system is likely to enter the compressor or turbine wheel crossing the piston rings which are used to arrest the undesirable oil flow. Compressor side oil leakage can cause white smoke and particulate emissions. Limited experimental and analytical methods are available to aid the designers in developing the oil flow path. The oil flow path has dimensions of the order of a few microns in certain areas and in mm in other areas. In addition, the flow is comprised of oil and exhaust gas mixture in certain regions. The combined effects of disparate geometric length scales and two-phase flow adds to the complexity of the flow. Understanding the oil flow allows the designer to correctly size the components, flow path and also specify the appropriate clearances between for instance shaft and bearing journals. In this study a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model has been built and validated through several experiments conducted particularly to check the oil leak through the piston rings. The study shows that CFD based models can predict within engineering accuracy the flow through leakages in a turbocharger. The importance of manufacturing tolerances on the leakages is also highlighted.

According to ANSI N14.5, the periodic leakage rate testing of Type B radioactive material transportation packages is performed within 12 months prior to each shipment. The purpose of performing periodic leakage rate testing is to confirm that packages built to an approved design can perform their containment function as required after a period of use. However, certain transportation packages, e.g., Model 9975 and 9977 Type B packages, have been used for interim storage for a period > 12 months, and it is desirable to extend the periodic leakage rate testing interval to reduce personnel radiation exposure and cost. Long-term leak performance tests on O-ring test fixtures have been conducted at 200°F (366K) and higher temperatures since 2004 for the purpose of interim storage of 9975 packages. The test data are adopted and evaluated in this paper by using the Arrhenius function and the Weibull statistics to establish the basis for extending the periodic leakage rate testing interval. The results show that the testing interval can be extended to 5 and 2 years for Model 9977 packages with Viton® GLT and GLT-S elastomeric O-rings (Parker Seals V0835-75 and VM835-75), respectively, if the O-ring service temperature is kept below 200°F (366K) and verified with continuous temperature monitoring.

The internal wave formed at a pycnocline or thermocline in the ocean is influenced by the Coriolis force of the Earth's rotation. Global efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and to tackle the problem of depleting petroleum resources have stimulated the exploitation of alternative fuels in the aviation industry. One crucial aspect amongst others is to investigate the compatibility of alternative fuels with elastomeric materials currently used in gas turbine engines. However, little knowledge about this has been understood so far for commercial aircrafts under real engine conditions. This study combines Stress-Relaxation test and FTIR spectroscopy techniques to look at the effect of alternative fuels on O-rings made from different materials; such as nitrile, fluorocarbon and fluorosilicone. Results indicated that after immerged in fuels for a period of time while simultaneously being compressed at certain temperatures, the fluorocarbon O-rings showed minimum change in the eight types of fuels tested. This meant they are compatible with these fuels, with the nitrile O-rings changing the most. Furthermore, FT-SPK+20% hexanol caused the biggest relaxation in fluorosilicone O-rings but had the smallest effect on nitrile ones while all fuels presented similar behavior in fluorocarbon. FTIR spectrum analysis showed molecular composition changes are dependent on the reactions between different materials and fuels. For fluorosilicone O-rings, the absorbance reduction from 1150 to 1050 cm−1 was caused by the breakdown of (Si-O-Si) while the formation of new O-H bonds enhanced the intensity from 3000 to 2800 cm−1. For fluorocarbon O-rings, obvious increase in absorption could be found in the region from 1400 to 650 cm−1, while from 3000 to 2800 cm−1, the absorption decreased. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated a highly correlated relationship between the chemical structure changes and the force relaxation.

The original derivation of the PIR formula referenced in 49 CFR 192 is contained in the Gas Research Institute (GRI) report by C-FER Technologies (C-FER), "A Model for Sizing High Consequence Areas Associated with Natural Gas Pipelines" (Stephens 2000). It must be recognized that this formula was derived solely on the premise that thermal radiation from a jet/trench fire is the dominant hazard related to pipe rupture and subsequent ignition. Since natural gas is non-toxic and significantly lighter than air, this premise is valid. However, there are certain pipeline operators transporting flammable gases other than natural gas (e.g. hydrogen) that will be governed by the jet fire hazard, and thus there is a need for the derivation of PIR formulae for use in identifying high consequence areas for these pipelines. While the C-FER report provides a basis for derivation of such formulae, the dimensionless values for emissivity factor, release rate decay factor, and efficiency factor used in the original derivation of the PIR formula have not been validated or optimized for flammable gases other than natural gas.
