The paper presents the results of the analysis of the emotional state of patients with epilepsy and depressions in the interictal period. Was analyzed the entire spectrum of aff ective manifestations (positive and negative emotional reactions), and were separately investigated the structural features of anxiety. It has been established that in the structure of the emotional state of patients with epilepsy, both with depressions and without, is noted the presence of negative aff ectivity in the form of reactions of tension, anxiety, anger, and frustration. The specifi c character of the emotional state of patients with epilepsy with depressions lies not so much in the representation of specifi c negative emotional states, but in the range of their severity. The emotional state of patients with epilepsy and depressions is represented by extremely negative emotional reactions, among which the most pronounced and characteristic of all forms of depression is the feeling of sadness. The specifics of the emotional state are determined depending on the form of depression: against the background of the state of sadness, with organic depression in the aff ective state, dominates the feeling of fatigue; with psychogenic — tension and anxiety; with endogenous — self-deprecation. Were distinguished the structural features of anxiety in patients with various forms of depression, was noted its high level in psychogenic depressions.

In this paper, the seismic profiles of the central area of Huanghua depression were balanced and restored by 2DMove software. We calculated the extension parameters of the balanced corss-section in the different period, analyzed the tectonic deformation of Huanghua depression. According to the total extension parameters of balanced cross-section, the Cenozoic evolution of the Huanghua depression may be divided into two phase of tectonic evolution which are rifting stage and post-rift stage. The rifting stage included three episodic rifting: The third members of Shehejie with the rapidest subsidence,Ⅰepisodic rifting; The first and second members of Shahejie with the fault-depression,Ⅱepisodic rifting; The Dongying with terminal fault-depressed ,Ⅲepisodic rifting . The Huanghua depression shows a double-layer vertical structure with faulting structures in the lower and depressing structure in the upper sector.

ECG is a bio-medical signal which records the electrical activity of the heart versus time. They are important for diagnostic and research purposes of the human heart. In this paper we discuss a method of feature extraction which is an inevitable step in most approaches in diagnosing abnormalities in the heart. A web application is developed which extracts features of ECG signal like ST segment, QRS wave, etc. and use these features for identifying whether a person suffers from any of the four levels of stress, that is, Hyper Acute stress (Myocardial Infarction), Acute stress (Type A), Hyper Chronic stress (Ischemia) or Chronic Stress (Type B). The application is built using a decision support system formed by extensive learning of behavior of the signals of various persons.Â

Postpartum depression is one of the health problems that may occur without being recognized which may lead to a serious adverse effect for mother and her child. Postpartum depression remain underestimated and unrecognized as many women are discharged without being detected as having PPD or even uneducated in order to seek for help when needed. Postpartum depression has a negative impact on both mother and the child wellbeing. Early detection is essential for mothers’ and infants’ safety. Postpartum depression is defined as “a disorder that is often unrecognized and undertreated”. The aim of this paper is to go through an analysis for postpartum depression detection and get a clear picture about the definition, attributes, antecedents, consequences and its empirical References. Method: a review of the literature was conducted. Articles from 2013 to 2020 were included. Walker and Avant framework was used for concept analysis. Results: the search have found four attributes: time, risk factors, symptoms, and outcome. Also, the search have found the following antecedents: knowledge, screening and care. The consequences are access to mental health care and drawing the treatment line process. Conclusion: this analysis will help in discovering the suitable methods for detecting the postpartum depression to achieve high quality care for mothers and infants.

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the association between Depression and suicidal ideation. We use data from six studies to do a meta-analysis. We applied the random-effects analytic model and calculated a pooled odds ratio. The combined effect size showed that odds of suicidal ideation among people with Depression is 4.88 times higher than those peoples without Depression (ORMH 4.88 95%CI 2.04, 11.72) Test for overall effect: Z = 3.55 (P = 0.0004) Heterogeneity: Tau² = 1.11; Chi² = 100.97, df = 5 (P < 0.00001); I² = 95%. The magnitude of suicidal ideation among people with Depression is 46.39% (528) and peoples without Depression is 17.79 % (315) from the total, 39.13 % (1138) is depressed and 60.86% (1779) not depressed. The overall proportion of Suicidal Ideation among the included studies is 28.98 % (843). The total number of study subjects included in our systematic review and meta-analysis is 2908.

BackgroundThe goal of the present study was to analyze associations between depression and mortality of cancer patients and to test whether these associations would vary by study characteristics.MethodMeta-analysis was used for integrating the results of 105 samples derived from 76 prospective studies.ResultsDepression diagnosis and higher levels of depressive symptoms predicted elevated mortality. This was true in studies that assessed depression before cancer diagnosis as well as in studies that assessed depression following cancer diagnosis. Associations between depression and mortality persisted after controlling for confounding medical variables. The depression–mortality association was weaker in studies that had longer intervals between assessments of depression and mortality, in younger samples and in studies that used the Beck Depression Inventory as compared with other depression scales.ConclusionsScreening for depression should be routinely conducted in the cancer treatment setting. Referrals to mental health specialists should be considered. Research is needed on whether the treatment of depression could, beyond enhancing quality of life, extend survival of depressed cancer patients.

This article summarizes an investigation of the stigmatization of depression in Thailand to determine whether there is a relationship between depression literacy and personal stigma and perceived stigma. This mixed-method study utilized two questionnaires, the Depression Literacy Questionnaire and the Depression Stigma Scale, by Griffiths et al. and subsequently asked participants for their opinions of depression and stigmatization within the Thai context. About 914 online surveys were processed using correlational and descriptive analysis. Results indicate that the depression literacy score was moderate to average. Personal stigma, on average, was low to moderate. Perceived stigma, on average, was moderate to high. The correlation between depression literacy and personal stigma was a strong negative correlation, unlike in depression literacy and perceived stigma. The correlation between personal stigma and perceived stigma was a moderate positive correlation. The level of negative stigma was lower than the perceived stigma. This research indicated that depression literacy had a significant negative correlation with personal stigma but no correlation with perceived stigma. Other factors such as sex, level of education, religion, and prior experiences with people with depression play a moderate role in the level of depression literacy and personal stigma.

Abstract. The speed of Atlantic surface depressions, occurred during the autumn and winter seasons and that lead to intense precipitation over Italy from 1951 to 2000, was investigated. Italy was divided into 5 regions as documented in previous climatological studies (based on Principal Component Analysis). Intense precipitation events were selected on the basis of in situ rain gauge data and clustered according to the region that they hit. For each intense precipitation event we tried to identify an associated surface depression and we tracked it, within a large domain covering the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions, from its formation to cyclolysis in order to estimate its speed. "Depression speeds" were estimated with 6-h resolution and clustered into slow and non-slow classes by means of a threshold, coinciding with the first quartile of speed distribution and depression centre speeds were associated with their positions. Slow speeds occurring over an area including Italy and the western Mediterranean basin showed frequencies higher than 25%, for all the Italian regions but one. The probability of obtaining by chance the observed more than 25% success rate was estimated by means of a binomial distribution. The statistical reliability of the result is confirmed for only one region. For Italy as a whole, results were confirmed at 95% confidence level. Stability of the statistical inference, with respect to errors in estimating depression speed and changes in the threshold of slow depressions, was analysed and essentially confirmed the previous results.

Multiple studies have supported the bi-directional relationship between sleep and depression. However, by adopting the latent constructs of depression and sleep quality, previous studies failed to map relationships among individual symptoms. To address the limitation, this study applied network analysis to investigate the relationships among individual nodes of sleep quality and depression. In specific, this study identified the most central node and bridges across these two conditions. Gaussian graphical models (GGM) of depression symptoms and aspects of sleep quality were calculated using the R package qgraph. By using the bridge functions in the networktools, this study found little relationship among individual items of sleep quality and depression. Moreover, sleep quality nodes served as the main bridges between sleep and depression. The network approach offered insights regarding the link between sleep and depression, which provided a more nuanced understanding of how depression and sleep quality are related.

BackgroundThere is controversy about whether psychotherapies are effective in the treatment of subclinical depression, defined by clinically relevant depressive symptoms in the absence of a major depressive disorder.AimsTo examine whether psychotherapies are effective in reducing depressive symptoms, reduce the risk of developing major depressive disorder and have comparable effects to psychological treatment of major depression.MethodWe conducted a meta-analysis of 18 studies comparing a psychological treatment of subclinical depression with a control group.ResultsThe target groups, therapies and characteristics of the included studies differed considerably from each other, and the quality of many studies was not optimal. Psychotherapies did have a small to moderate effect on depressive symptoms against care as usual at the post-test assessment (g = 0.35, 95% CI 0.23–0.47; NNT = 5, 95% CI 4–8) and significantly reduced the incidence of major depressive episodes at 6 months (RR = 0.61) and possibly at 12 months (RR = 0.74). The effects were significantly smaller than those of psychotherapy for major depressive disorder and could be accounted for by non-specific effects of treatment.ConclusionsPsychotherapy may be effective in the treatment of subclinical depression and reduce the incidence of major depression, but more high-quality research is needed.

Schätzungsweise 30 % der Depressionen im klinischen Setting verlaufen chronisch und gehen mit erheblichen Beeinträchtigungen, hohen Gesundheitskosten und immensem Leidensdruck einher. Bisherige pharmakologische und psychotherapeutische Behandlungsansätze sind bei dieser Patientengruppe weniger effektiv als bei akuten depressiven Episoden. Mit dem Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) von James McCullough wurde ein spezifisch auf chronische Depression zugeschnittenes Psychotherapieverfahren entwickelt, das behaviorale, kognitive und interpersonelle Therapiestrategien integriert. Die Wirksamkeit von CBASP wurde in einer großen randomisierten kontrollierten Studie belegt ( Keller et al., 2000 ). Der vorliegende Beitrag hat zum Ziel, die praktische Umsetzung von CBASP an einem Fallbeispiel aus einer psychotherapeutischen Ambulanz darzustellen. Dazu wird zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über das Vorgehen innerhalb von CBASP gegeben. Es handelt sich um die Behandlung einer 55-jährigen Büroangestellten, die seit neun Jahren an einer chronischen Major Depression (DSM-IV 296.31) leidet. In ihrem Fall hat sich CBASP als sehr wirksam und hilfreich erwiesen. Dieser Therapieansatz zeigte sich hierbei innerhalb der psychotherapeutischen Praxis gut umsetzbar und erscheint für Fälle mit chronischer Depression außerordentlich geeignet.

This article investigates the analysis of online depression forums and questionnaires. The article analyses seven depression forums, two Hungarian and five international forum. Depression forum posts were analyzed based on keyword searches and readings from forum posts. 37 keywords were analyzed, the results of which are illustrated with diagrams. The most commonly used keyword is `help'. In addition, frequently used keywords include 'depressed', 'depression', 'anxiety', 'sleep', 'help', 'doctor', 'psychiatrist', 'sorry', 'thanks',' advice ',' work ',' anxiety '. Of the depressed questionnaires, 6 questionnaires were analyzed. Finally, some ontological models are presented that model the depression and its effects.

ObjectivesDepression and depressive symptoms are common mental disorders that have a considerable effect on patients’ health-related quality of life and satisfaction with medical care, but the prevalence of these conditions varies substantially between published studies. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide a precise estimate of the prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among outpatients in different clinical specialties.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sources and eligibility criteriaThe PubMed and PsycINFO, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify observational studies that contained information on the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms in outpatients. All studies included were published before January 2016. Data characteristics were extracted independently by two investigators. The point prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms was measured using validated self-report questionnaires or structured interviews. Assessments were pooled using a random-effects model. Differences in study-level characteristics were estimated by meta-regression analysis. Heterogeneity was assessed using standard χ2tests and the I2statistic. The study protocol has been registered with PROSPERO under number CRD42017054738.ResultsEighty-three cross-sectional studies involving 41 344 individuals were included in this study. The overall pooled prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms was 27.0% (10 943/41 344 individuals; 95% CI 24.0% to 29.0%), with significant heterogeneity between studies (p<0.0001, τ2=0.3742, I2=96.7%). Notably, a significantly higher prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms was observed in outpatients than in the healthy controls (OR 3.16, 95% CI 2.66 to 3.76, I2=72.0%, χ2=25.33). The highest depression/depressive symptom prevalence estimates occurred in studies of outpatients from otolaryngology clinics (53.0%), followed by dermatology clinics (39.0%) and neurology clinics (35.0%). Subgroup analyses showed that the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms in different specialties varied from 17.0% to 53.0%. The prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms was higher among outpatients in developing countries than in outpatients from developed countries. Moreover, the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms in outpatients slightly decreased from 1996 to 2010. Regarding screening instruments, the Beck Depression Inventory led to a higher estimate of the prevalence of depression and depressive symptoms (1316/4702, 36.0%, 95% CI 29.0% to 44.0%, I2=94.8%) than the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (1003/2025, 22.0%, 95% CI 12.0% to 35.0%, I2=96.6%).ConclusionOur study provides evidence that a significant proportion of outpatients experience depression or depressive symptoms, highlighting the importance of developing effective management strategies for the early identification and treatment of these conditions among outpatients in clinical practice. The substantial heterogeneity between studies was not fully explained by the variables examined.

Objective: To explore the personality characteristics of Traditional Uyghur Medicine (TUM) abnormal body fluid type major depressive disorder in patients and provide a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment and prevention of depression. Method: Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was used to test the 238 patients with depression, responses were compared with normal mode group, test results were obtained using SPSS 21.0 statistical software for data analysis, the two groups were compared using [Formula: see text]-test, variance analysis was used in the comparison, pairwise comparison was made with the LSD method and [Formula: see text] was found to be statistically significant. Results: The mental qualities namely Psychoticism/Socialization (P), Extroversion/Introversion (E), Neuroticism/Stability (N) and Lie/Social Desirability (L) of patients with depression were found to be higher than the normal mode group, and the difference was statistically significant; the scores of [Formula: see text]- and [Formula: see text]-scales were higher in the patients with abnormal cold and dry type depression than those in the normal group, compared with other abnormal body fluid type depressions. Conclusion: Research results indicate that abnormal body fluid and personality both play a role in the pathogenesis of depression. In particular, the personality characteristics of patients with abnormal cold and dry type body fluid play an important role in the occurence and development of depression.

Introduction Despite a significant number of studies devoted to the relationship between depression and religiosity, the diagnosis of depression in religious patients is complicated due to the insufficiently studied psychopathology and the peculiarities of the patient’s experiences. Objectives To determine the specific features of psychopathology and phenomenology of depression, masked by a “religious facade”, for timely diagnostics and prevention of suicidal behavior. Methods One hundred and fifteen religious (orthodox) inpatients (41 male, 74 female) with depression (F31.3, F31.4, F 32.1., F 32.2, F 33.1, F 33.2 according to ICD-10) were examined. Psychopathological method, HAM-D, SIDAS and statistical analysis were applied. Results Five types of depression were specified, which differed in psychopathological structure and content of the religious experiences. Overvalued ideas of guilt and sinfulness were predominant in melancholic depressions, ideas of God-forsakenness and the loss of “living” faith - in apathetic. Depressions with overvalued doubts whether the right faith and confession has been chosen accompanied with anxiety, melancholy and apathy. It should be specially mentioned apathetic and melancholic depressions characterized by “spiritual hypochondria” with specific cenesto-hypochondrical symptomatology. Melancholic depressions characterized by high suicidal risk prevailed (65%) over the other depressions. Conclusions Depressions masked by a “religious facade” often are not recognized due to specifical content, which results in lack of timely diagnostics and creates a high risk of suicidal behavior. BackgroundChildhood maltreatment has been discussed as a risk factor for the development and maintenance of depression.AimsTo examine the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult depression with regard to depression incidence, severity, age at onset, course of illness and treatment response.MethodWe conducted meta-analyses of original articles reporting an association between childhood maltreatment and depression outcomes in adult populations.ResultsIn total, 184 studies met inclusion criteria. Nearly half of patients with depression reported a history of childhood maltreatment. Maltreated individuals were 2.66 (95% CI 2.38–2.98) to 3.73 (95% CI 2.88–4.83) times more likely to develop depression in adulthood, had an earlier depression onset and were twice as likely to develop chronic or treatment-resistant depression. Depression severity was most prominently linked to childhood emotional maltreatment.ConclusionsChildhood maltreatment, especially emotional abuse and neglect, represents a risk factor for severe, early-onset, treatment-resistant depression with a chronic course.

Synapses are the communication channels for information transfer between neurons; these are the points at which pulse-like signals are converted into the stochastic release of quantized amounts of chemical neurotransmitter. At many synapses, prior neuronal activity depletes synaptic resources, depressing subsequent responses of both spontaneous and spike-evoked releases. We analytically compute the information transmission rate of a synaptic release site, which we model as a binary asymmetric channel. Short-term depression is incorporated by assigning the channel a memory of depth one. A successful release, whether spike evoked or spontaneous, decreases the probability of a subsequent release; if no release occurs on the following time step, the release probabilities recover back to their default values. We prove that synaptic depression can increase the release site’s information rate if spontaneous release is more strongly depressed than spike-evoked release. When depression affects spontaneous and evoked release equally, the information rate must invariably decrease, even when the rate is normalized by the resources used for synaptic transmission. For identical depression levels, we analytically disprove the hypothesis, at least in this simplified model, that synaptic depression serves energy- and information-efficient encoding.

Faunistic and ecological characterization of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera (Insecta) communities in permanent swamps situated in Făgăraş Depression and Sibiu Depression (Romania) This paper assesses the biodiversity of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera in permanent swamps situated in two contact depressions between Făgăraş Mountains and the Transylvania Plateau, and performs a species association and a species monthly dynamics analysis. We have identified 30 species of Heteroptera, of which 18 species are aquatic (Infraorder Nepomorpha) and 12 are semiaquatic (Infraorder Gerromorpha). The α-biodiversity analysis reveales values between 0.379-3.475 for the investigated stations, which indicate a uniform distribution of individuals on species, both within stations and in each of the two depressions. The monthly sampling, in 2004, enabled us to analyze the species dynamics.
