An essay is presented about Nina Gyndunovna Gomboeva, who has made her career at the Geography department from an assistant to a professor. Twice she was the head of the department; she created a master’s degree in geographical education at the department. In 2021, she celebrated her 70th anniversary, and in 2023 the department celebrates its 70th anniversary. The fate of Nina Gyndunovna is closely connected with the history of the department. Nina Gyndunovna has her own view of this history, which is of great interest both for historical and scientific research on the geography of higher education in the Transbaikal Region and for students, graduates, teachers who have connected their lives with geographical and pedagogical sciences. Doctor of Sciences Gomboeva has tried to highlight the activities of all teachers, to characterize their best qualities. Scientific researches by N.G. Gomboeva fit into the direction of medical geography, or rather, they can be defined as the geography of the physiological adaptation of a person to the physical and geographical conditions of the Transbaikal region. Nina Gyndunovna has a thorny path in science, but her intellect, talent, positive attitude towards people have helped to overcome all difficulties and achieve success.

Poland is the country where a first scientific institution under the name of Human Ecology (HE) had been established. It took place in 1960 in the National Research Institute of Mother and Child. In 1969 this institution was moved to the Institute of Ecology of the Polish Academy of Sciences under the name of Laboratory of Human Ecology then changed into the Department of Human Ecology. In the middle of the 60s, the Laboratory of Human Ecology and Paleopathology was created in the Department of Mediterranean Archaeology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the 70s the Department of Hygiene and Human Ecology existed in the College of Physical Education in Katowice. HE is the main interest of the Department of Human Populational Ecology, Institute of Anthropology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Since 1999 the Division of Human Ecology within the Department of Biology and Human Ecology exists in the Academy of Physical Education in Wrocław. In 2000 the Department of HC in the Institute of Ecology of the Polish Academy of Sciences was canceled and then in 2001, the Unit of EC in the Faculty of Christian Philosophy of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University was created. Within this Unit, two Chairs were formed: Human Biology and Cultural Anthropology. The first one contains three Departments: 1. Auxology and Gerontology; 2. Genetics of Human Population and Demography; 3. Public Health and Nutrition. The second Chair has two Departments: 1. Ethnology and Anthropogeography; 2. Urban and Space Planning.

Conservation biologists have divided wildlife in two antagonist categories—native and introduced populations—because they defend the hypothesis that the latter acquires or expresses harmful qualities that a population that remains in its original environment does not possess. Invasion biology has emerged as a branch of conservation biology dedicated exclusively to conflicts between introduced wildlife and human interest, including the protection of biodiversity. For invasion biology, the damage caused by native species is different and must be managed differently. However, the consensus around this native–introduced dichotomy is not universal, and a debate has intensified in recent years. The objective of this work was to compare the impacts of native and introduced species of terrestrial vertebrates of the United States using the dataset provided by Wildlife Services (WS), which depend upon the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture. Annually, they receive thousands of reports and complaints of human–wildlife conflicts. I analyzed the WS databases and found, against expectations, that native species produce significantly more damage than nonnative ones, especially regarding damage to agriculture, property and health and safety. In the category of impacts on biodiversity and natural ecosystems, the differences were minor. I discuss several potential explanations of these patterns in the results. I also discuss the ecological foundations of the native–introduced dichotomy hypothesis.

This study aims to explore the interdisciplinary research and courses of the Department of Information Studies (DIS) at Sultan Qaboos University with other disciplines in the university, and to explore its impact on the management and development of various academic programs of the department. To achieve this objective, the study utilized qualitative research methods such as: content analysis of documents, written plans, and course syllabi of the department and open interviews with faculty members to identify kinds of relations with other scientific disciplines they seek when building their academic programs. The study revealed that the interdisciplinary relations of the department exist in all its programs. The DIS PhD program was initiated as an interdisciplinary program in cooperation with departments of Information Systems, Management, and Computer Science. Further, the interdisciplinary path of the Masters’ program is clearly seen in the variation of topics that dissertations have discussed, which include human resources, marketing, bibliometric studies, social media, e-government, information literacy, manuscripts, and technology acceptance. The Higher Diploma in Medical Libraries is directed towards qualifying specialist librarians for health and medical libraries. Students admitted in this program are usually selected from those who apply from biology and health sciences. Lastly, in the undergraduate level, DIS provides the bachelor of Learning Resource Centers in Faculty of Education with number of specialized courses. In the main time there are many electives and required courses from different disciplines that are included in the department’s undergraduate study plan.

The Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University offered a human physiology course to middle school and high school science teachers in the Richmond, VA, area. It was a three-credit course, team taught, and given at a location convenient to many area teachers. This course served the community by contributing to the continuing education efforts of teachers and concurrently enhanced our recruitment program by advertising "physiology" to teachers who will influence college-bound students for years to come. In addition, we established ties between teachers and physiology faculty such that continuing interactions (e.g., collaborative research during the summer) should be facilitated. The success of the course suggests that this is an effective way to serve local communities, enhance efforts to recruit graduate students into the basic sciences, and at the same time help reverse the educational crisis in the US by bolstering the backgrounds of secondary school teachers.

The aim of this study was to analyze human sperm motility, viability, and morphology before and after cryopreservation. This true laboratory experimental study had pre and post randomized one group design. The study was conducted at the Embryology, Andrology, and Genetics Laboratory, Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga from August to November 2017. The eighteen samples of fresh semen were collected from male volunteers who agreed and signed the informed consent of the study. Samples were analyzed their motility, viability, and morphology before and after cryopreservation. Results of this study indicated differentiation between motility before and after cryopreservation. Cryopreservation process decreased progressive motility (42.22 + 9.46%; 17.83 + 6.24%; p< 0.0001) and increased the number of immotile spermatozoa (35.44 + 10.15%; 60.11 + 12.53%; p< 0.0001). Cryopreservation also decreased human sperm viability (73.78 + 8.91%; 40.83 + 12.89%; p< 0.0001) and morphology (10.94 + 4.96%; 7.39 + 3.90%; p< 0.0001). Cryopreservation of human spermatozoa caused the decreased of motility, viability, and morphology.

Analyses of honey, conducted in the laboratory of the Department of biology, bioresources and aquaculture of Novosibirsk state UNIVERSITY, showed that they are of great value for diastase number (15.9–26.6), invertase activity (136–190), sucrose content (0–1, 6). Spectral analysis of Siberian honey has shown that bee honey contains all 70 elements, minerals in a biologically active state and doses necessary for normal human and animal life. There is no product of the same value in nature.

Eco Campus is a national environmental management system and award scheme for the higher education sector for addressing key issues of environment. One of the education institutions at university level that was planned to implement an eco- campus is the State University of Surabaya (UNESA) especially at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMIPA). However, to create such goal, it was important to begin with how to make the students have responsible environmental behavior (REB). Related to such problem, the pre experimental research has been conducted to promote three of responsible environmental behavior of students in Biology department of international class 2012, comprised of; eco-management action, persuasion, and economic/consumer action using the implementation of environmental education program. As a lifelong study, the environmental education was aimed to show that interdependency between humanity and the environment was needed to improve the human environment sustainability for the present and the future generations. This study was conducted using variety of data sources; observation, interview, questionnaire and test. Based on the data analyses descriptively and the discussion result, it was known that the ability of the lecturer to manage the learning activities for each category was good. Then, the implementation of environmental education program can promote three categories of responsible environmental behaviors of students. Moreover, the environmental education implemented in the current research has positive impact on students’ cognitive learning outcomes of environmental knowledge subject, especially the strategies for sustainable development topic, based on the UNESA grade standard.Eko-kampus adalah sebuah sistem manajemen lingkungan nasional dan skema penghargaan untuk sektor pendidikan tinggi untuk mengatasi permasalahan utama lingkungan. Salah satu lembaga pendidikan di tingkat universitas yang telah mencanangkan eko-kampus adalah Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) khususnya di Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA). Namun demikian, untuk mewujudkan tujuan tersebut, hal terpenting yang harus dipertimbangkan adalah bagaimana cara membentuk sikap mahasiswa memiliki perilaku yang bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan (REB).Terkait dengan permasalahan tersebut, penelitian pra-eksperimen telah dilakukan untuk mendorong terwujudnya tiga aspek perilaku yang bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan pada mahasiswa jurusan Biologi kelas internasional 2012, meliputi, tindakan eko-manajemen, persuasi, dan tindakan konsumen/ekonomi, melalui penerapan program pendidikan lingkungan. Sebagai pendidikan seumur hidup, pendidikan lingkungan bertujuan untuk menunjukkan bahwa saling ketergantungan antara manus ia dan lingkungan diperlukan untuk meningkatkan kelestarian lingkungan hidup manusia untuk saat ini dan generasi yang akan datang. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan berbagai teknik pengumpulan data meliputi, observasi, wawancara, angket dan tes. Berdasarkan analisis data secara deskriptif dan hasil pembahasan, diketahui bahwa kemampuan pengajar dalam mengelola aktivitas pembelajaran untuk setiap langkah pengajaran adalah baik. Kemudian, pelaksanaan program pendidikan lingkungan dapat mendorong tiga aspek perilaku yang bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan pada mahasiswa. Selain itu, pendidikan lingkungan yang telah diterapkan dalam penelitian ini memiliki dampak positif terhadap hasil belajar kognitif mahasiswa pada mata kuliah pengetahuan lingkungan, terutama pada materi strategi untuk pembangunan berkelanjutan, berdasarkan pada standar penilaian UNESA.

Sequencing of the human genome has ushered in a new era of biology. The technologies developed to facilitate the sequencing of the human genome are now being applied to the sequencing of other genomes. In 2004, a partnership was formed between Washington University School of Medicine Genome Sequencing Center's Outreach Program and Washington University Department of Biology Science Outreach to create a video tour depicting the processes involved in large-scale sequencing. “Sequencing a Genome: Inside the Washington University Genome Sequencing Center” is a tour of the laboratory that follows the steps in the sequencing pipeline, interspersed with animated explanations of the scientific procedures used at the facility. Accompanying interviews with the staff illustrate different entry levels for a career in genome science. This video project serves as an example of how research and academic institutions can provide teachers and students with access and exposure to innovative technologies at the forefront of biomedical research. Initial feedback on the video from undergraduate students, high school teachers, and high school students provides suggestions for use of this video in a classroom setting to supplement present curricula.

The aim of the present study was the internal validation of a DNA quantification method employing Ouantifiler® Humań DNA Ouantification Kit from Applied Biosystems, used for the quantification of human total DNA, coupled with the 7500 Real-Time PCR System and the HID Real-Time PCR Analysis Software v1.1, performed at the Biology Department of the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police. The selection of parameters relevant to the laboratory’s routine casework was madę based on the ENFSI DNA Working Group recommendations included in the document Recommended Minimum Criteria for the Validation of Various Aspects of the DNA Profiling Process. The assessment regarded: sensitivity, linearity, rangę covered by the method and precision, including intralaboratory repeatability and reproducibility. Moreover, an attempt was madę to determine whether continuation of genetic analyses is rational if the 7500 Real-Time system reads are negative, i.e. no nuclear DNA is detected, while the internal positive control (IPC) results are correct. Based on conducted validation expeńments, it was found that the extent to which the validated method met the predetermined acceptance criteria is satisfactory, taking into account the specificity of the tests conducted in our laboratory. However, any negative indications of 7500 Real-Time PCR system, suggesting no presence of nuclear DNA along with correct results obtained for the IPC, should be interpreted very carefully. Apparently, it is not rational to discontinue further analyses of such samples due to the availability of very sensitive new DNA amplification kits which often allow obtaining a fuli DNA profile. To sum up, the validation of the DNA quantification method employing the Ouantifiler® Human DNA Ouantification Kit coupled with the 7500 Real-Time PCR System and the HID Real-Time PCR Analysis Software V1.1 was successful, therefore the method could be implemented and routinely used for the quantification of human total DNA in biological samples subject to forensic analyses conducted at the Biology Department of the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police.

This essay analyzes the view of evolution of Jan Lever (1922–2010), founder of the biology department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and compares his view with those of J.H. Diemer and H. Dooyeweerd. Together with Dooyeweerd, Lever wrote a series of chapters on the species concept in Philosophia Reformata (1948–1950) in which species were defined as constant types. In his book, Creatie en Evolutie (1956), Lever still subscribed to Dooyeweerd’s philosophy but also suggested that it is possible that biological evolution occurred, including that of human beings, and that scientific research can shed light on these processes. Influenced by his idea of individuality structures, Dooyeweerd criticized Lever and suggested that species are constant; that science cannot speak to the topics that Lever discusses. It is argued that Dooyeweerd’s views are influenced by the typological thinking of the time and that reformational thought would benefit from de-emphasizing this aspect of reformational philosophy.

The purpose of our article is to review and analyze the main areas, projects and developments in the management of promising research projects of the US Department of Defense DARPA. The dynamics of funding revealed an increase in interest in such areas as materials technology and biotechnology, promising aerospace systems, technology centric armed struggle, etc. The object of the research is – the development of the DARPA agency, and its influence on world scientific activity. As a subject of research in the article the possibilities of the DARPA Biological Technology Department and the perspective directions of research are considered. The Agency for Advanced Defense Research Projects DARPA (USA) was established in 1958. Over the past decade, success has led to the creation of analogues of this organizational structure in other countries: DRDO (India), MAFAT (Israel), SASTIND (China), GDA (France). DARPA Technology Priorities for 2020: 1. human technology; 2. technology of robotics; 3. network technologies; 5. technologies of automatic switching of events of real and virtual worlds; 6. technologies of integration and mutual empowerment of human and computer networks; 7. integrated network technologies for the transformation of the real world through the interaction of man and robots. In 2014, DARPA announced the creation of a new department – Biological Technology. The Department of Biological Technologies (DBT) is created to study the complex mechanisms of natural processes, and to implement their use in solving the problems of national defense. The task of DBT is to put biology at the service of national security. Among the priorities of the new department: 1) Survivability and ability to survive military service; 2) Synthetic biology of animals and living systems; 3) Integration of biochemical and omics data on human health. A feature of the direct line will be the overcoming of moral and ethical constraints on the way to improving the physical and intellectual abilities of a person. The appearance in Ukraine of the DARPA analogue is of the utmost importance for future technological development. Such a structure, called GARDA, should become a platform that brings together developers, startups, investment funds and military. The GARDA project was developed last year, but it requires professional expertise, resources, and serious political support at the government level.The creation in Ukraine of the domestic prototype of the DARPA Agency has a number of prerequisites: 1) the presence of high-tech institutions in the areas of defense and dual use; 2) the need for technological advantages of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other armed formations of the state; 3) the importance of high-tech export on the world market of armaments and consolidation of the image of Ukraine as a high-tech state.

The Peterborough Hospital Human Tissue Bank, based in the Cellular Pathology Department of the District Hospital, has been successful in supplying commercial biomedical companies with human tissue for research purposes. Tissue is obtained from routine surgical specimens sent to the laboratory for diagnostic testing and from cadaveric donors examined in the hospital mortuary. All tissue is obtained legally and with the full informed consent of the patient, donor or relative, as appropriate. The mechanism of retrieving, storing and supplying human tissue is described. In publishing the activities of the tissue bank at Peterborough, we wish to encourage others to consider the availability of human tissue in their locality. We recommend a strict legal and ethical code, particularly in relation to fully informed consent.

An influential feminist scholar in the field of human-animal studies, Donna Haraway (Professor in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz) has over the past couple of decades provided ground-breaking critiques of such subjects as twentieth century primatology (and its links to race, gender and first-world/third-world politics), the place of nonhuman animals in laboratory science, and the phenomenon of pedigree dog breeding. Her most recent work focuses on our relationships with ‘companion species’, a term Haraway employs in her analysis of the diverse forms of human-animal interactions and exchanges that are part of everyday life. Drawing from ecological developmental biology, she suggests that companion species are the fruit of ‘multispecies reciprocal inductions’. In the following interview with Annie Potts (Co-Director, the New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies), Donna Haraway discusses her views on, amongst other things, feminism and multispecies issues, human exceptionalism and posthumanism, and the pleasures of ‘becoming with’ our companion species.

This article presents research which analyzes landscape transformation, using an interdisciplinary approach embedded in an archipelagic context. The investigation unfolds in Quinchao, a cluster of ten islands of the Quinchao Department, Chiloé archipelago, Región de Los Lagos, Chile. The investigation gathers reflections from such disciplines as anthropology, geography, biology and psychology which share similar reflections on the configuration of landscapes as an affordance or enabled property of the human-in-ecosystem assemblage. Ethnographic interpretations and Social Network Analysis of fieldwork data are used to propose a theoretical framework for the investigation of coastal and marine landscapes in archipelagic contexts.

One of the tasks of the modern educational system is to develop and support talented young people. One way of it could be the subject Olympiads for schoolchildren, which contribute to the professional orientation of students and their future success in life increasing students interest in science as well as developing their creative potential and cognitive activity. The experience of carrying out various stages of the All-Russian Biological Olympiad for schoolchildren in Biology showed that in order to achieve high results, participants of the Olympiad need a methodically sound system of training camps and advice from specialists in various fields of Biology. The paper summarizes long-term experience of organizing a practical tour of the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren in Biology at the department of General biology and Physiology of the South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University. The authors present methodological recommendations aimed at improving schoolchildren training for a practical tour of the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad in Biology (room Human Biology, grade 9), including a description of typical mistakes made by participants in the Olympiad, an algorithm for performing practical tasks on microscopy of histological preparations, criteria for differentiating histological objects, examples of Olympiad tasks with a matrix of answers.

Existing Human Physiology Anatomy teaching materials tend to have a gap between the content of teaching materials and students, and there is no link to the verses of the Qur'an and the values of Asma al Husna. This study aims to develop didactic and contemplative-based teaching materials for human anatomy and physiology. Research development (R & D) used the ADDIE model. The participants in this study were three experts and 58 sixth semester biology students, majoring in biology department, Tarbiyah and Teachers Training Faculty, IAIN Batusangkar. The research instruments were observation sheets, interview sheets and validation questionnaires. The mean and standard deviation were calculated to determine the validity. Didactic and contemplative teaching materials in the Human Physiology Anatomy course were developed to fulfill all aspects of a development research, according to the characteristics of a teaching material, having didactic and contemplative characteristics. The didactic and contemplative teaching materials developed contain didactic aspects in the form of various activities, according to student learning styles, there is contemplation practice, contains Asma al Husna and contains verses of the Qur'an. The didactic and contemplative teaching materials developed have validity with very valid criteria (3.45±0.43). Thus, these teaching materials are suitable for use in classroom learning, fill the gap between the content of teaching materials and students, stop the separation between "knowledge" and "student-self" and deserve to be used as a reference in developing teaching materials that integrate science and religion

Background: The etiology of unexplained infertility has not been fully understood. This study aimed to determine the effect of antisperm antibody (ASA) from infertile women on viability, motility, plasma membrane integrity, and status of tyrosine phosphorylation in the human spermatozoa.Methods: An experimental in vitro study was conducted at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia from February to November 2014. Spermatozoa from normal fertile donors was incubated with serum containing ASA from infertile women at several dilutions (1/1000, 1/100, 1/10, and without dilution) for 1 and 2 hours. The plasma membrane integrity was assessed with hypoosmotic swelling (HOS) test, whereas the status of tyrosine phosphorylation was analyzed using Western immunoblotting and immunocytochemistry.Results: After 1 hour incubation time, ASA caused a decrease in sperm viability, motility, plasma membrane integrity, and inhibit sperm tyrosine phosphorylation. ASA caused a decrease in viability, motility, sperm plasma membrane integrity, and tyrosine phosphorylation of sperm after 1 hour incubation time.Conclusion: ASA from infertile women reduced the sperm viability, motility, plasma membrane integrity, and capacitation in dose and time dependent manner.

Abstract Abstract 4834 Over the past half century, the course of sickle cell disease has been transformed in the United States through the conduct of rigorous biomedical research and broad application of the results. Universal newborn screening with comprehensive medical care has dramatically reduced death and disability in childhood, and increased the numbers of patients surviving into adulthood. However, access to health care has not kept up with the changing demographics of those affected by sickle cell disease. Health care often becomes fragmented when patients transition from pediatric to adult health care providers. Access to comprehensive care has impeded both conduct of clinical and implementation of research results. To address these needs in this changing environment, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has charged six agencies of HHS – NIH, CDC, HRSA, FDA, AHRQ and CMS – and the Offices of Minority Health and Planning and Evaluation, to improve the health of people with SCD. The agencies are coordinating their programs and collaborating with the Office of the Secretary, to achieve the following goals:create a comprehensive database of individuals with SCD to facilitate the monitoring of health outcomes and clinical research;improve the care of adults and children through development and dissemination of evidence-based guidelines, which are anticipated in Spring, 2012, with broad implementation plans;identify measures of quality of care for individuals with SCD and incorporate them into quality improvement programs at HHS;increase the availability of medical homes to improve patient access to quality primary and specialty care;provide State Medicaid officials, health care providers, patients, families and advocacy groups with information about resources related to SCD care and treatment;work with the pharmaceutical industry and academic investigators to increase the development of effective treatments for patients with SCD;support research to improve health care for people with SCD;support research to understand the clinical implications of SC trait;engage national and community-based SCD advocacy organizations and experts in ongoing discussions to ensure that issues of importance to persons affected are addressed. Organizational and strategic actions are being taken at each agency to enhance implementation of research advances; provide evidence-based guidelines to families, health care providers, and payers; facilitate new drug development; and provide public health data to impact both the health care delivery and research agendas. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigatethe possibility that the saccule may contribute to human hearing. The forty participants included twenty healthy people and twenty other subjects selected from patients who presented with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo to Audiology Department of Hazrat Rasoul Akram hospital (Tehran, Iran). Assessments comprised of audiological evaluations, cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs), recognition of spoken phonemes in white noise (Rsp in wn), and auditory brainstem response to 500 Hz tone burst (ABR500 HZ). Twenty affected ears with decreased vestibular excitability as detected by abnormal cVEMPs revealed decreased scores of Rsp in wn and abnormal findings ofABR500 HZ. Both unaffected and normal ears had normal results. Multiple comparisons of mean values of cVEMPs andABR500 HZbetween three groups were significant (P<0.05, ANOVA). The correlation between RSP in wn and p13 latencies was significant. The peak-to-peak amplitudes showed significant correlation to RSP in wn. The correlation between RSP in wn and the latencies of n23 was significant. In high-level of noisy competing situations, healthy human saccular sensation can mediate the detection of low frequencies and possibly help in cochlear hearing for frequency and intensity discrimination. So, all human hearing is not cochlear.

Background: The left ventricle is longer and narrower than the right ventricle, extending from its base in the plane of the atrioventricular groove to the cardiac apex. The wall of the left ventricle is three times thicker (8-12 mm) than those of right ventricle. The wall of the right ventricle is relatively thin (3–5 mm), the ratio of the thickness of the two ventricular walls usually being 1:3. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is characterized by myocardial wall thickening, particularly a disproportionate thickening of the interventricular septum in comparison with the posterior wall. An athlete’s heart may physiologically hypertrophy but in a uniform fashion. The objective of the study is to determine the thickness of wall of right and left ventricle of adult human heart and ratio of thickness of right and left ventricle. Materials and Methods: Adult human hearts were procured from the specimens preserved in Anatomy Department of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences. A cross-sectional study was conducted on forty- four specimen of adult heart. The measurement of the right and left ventricular wall was done with digital vernier caliper. The measurements were done at three levels in both right and left ventricle: upper, middle and lower part. Result and Conclusion: The ratio of the thickness of the wall of right and left ventricle is well known as 1:3. However, in our study we found the ratio as 1:1.4. We found the thickness of the right ventricle thicker than the normal thickness reported in previous studies. We wish to continue the study with a larger sample size. Background: Preeclampsia is a major cause of feto maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. WHO estimated the incidence to be seven times higher in developing countries than in developed countries (2.8% of live births versus 0.4%). Overall preeclampsia/ eclampsia accounts for 10%–15% of maternal deaths. Exact etiology of the disease is unknown. Objective: To compare the serum b-HCG levels in preeclamptic and normal pregnant women. Methods: This case-control study was carried out in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, Dhaka, during July 2017 to June 2019 to evaluate the serum b-HCG level in preeclamptic and normal pregnant women. This study compare the b-HCG levels between the two groups as well as find out the association of serum b-HCG level with severity of preeclampsia. A total 80 women with ³37 weeks of gestation admitted into the Department, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Out of 80 pregnant women 40 with preeclampsia and rest 40 normal pregnant women were considered as case (Group I) and control (Group II) respectively. Serum b-HCG level of all the women were determined in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Bangabandhu sheikh Mujib Medical University. Statistical analysis of the results were obtained by using window based computer software devised with Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS-22.0). Result: The mean systolic blood pressure was 175.3±10.1 mmHg in group I and 113.1±14.0 mmHg in group II. The mean diastolic blood pressure was 106.75±10.47 mmHg in group I and 72.3±8.0 mmHg in group II. The difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean b-HCG was 42235±34491 IU/L in group I and 29224±21022 IU/L in group II. The difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean b-HCG was 27664.9±18076.4 IU/ L in mild preeclampsia and 48474.7±31554.1 IU/L in severe preeclampsia. The difference was also found statistically significant (p<0.05) between two groups. No difference in Serum b-hCG was found between mild preeclampsia and normal pregnancy. Conclusion: Significantly high level of Serum b-hCG was found in the preeclamptic compared to the normal pregnant women. Serum b-hCG level also found raised according to the severity of preeclampsia due to hyperplasic trophoblastic cells of placenta. Museums of anatomy occupy an important place among museums, being a source of empirical knowledge in the field of biological science. However, most museums of anatomy are organized on the basis of medical and pharmaceutical universities as an additional educational space for students to get the most complete picture of the human body structure and the changes that occur in tissues and organs when exposed to various negative environmental factors. Museums of anatomy created on the basis of pedagogical universities are capable of performing educational and research functions for a wide range of students. The paper describes the experience of using the funds of the Museum Human Anatomy in the educational process of students and schoolchildren at General Biology and Physiology Department of South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University. The authors consider some activity areas of the museum related to the implementation of educational and research activities. The paper presents methodical recommendations aimed at improving schoolchildrens training for the practical part of the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad in Biology (grades 910), including an algorithm for performing practical tasks to determine and describe the humanorgans (bones of the skeleton), examples of Olympiad tasks with a matrix of answers.

SummaryThe contribution of Charles Thibault in creating and developing a major international centre of animal research at Jouy-en-Josas (near Versailles) in post Second World War France is recorded in detail. Not only did he select a team of gifted young chercheurs, but he stimulated and supported their research in diverse ways. The projects covered were not only primarily of significance to animal reproduction, but they also became relevant to human infertility studies and to IVF treatments. Members of the team in Physiologie Animale gained international research reputations and seasoned overseas researchers were attracted to Jouy-en-Josas for their sabbaticals. Thibault himself was known especially for his studies on the mammalian oocyte, on fertilization both in vivo and in vitro, and for a key publication on parthenogenesis. Over and above leading the department of Physiologie Animale at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), he was Professor of Reproductive Physiology at the University of Paris VI and an influential member of national committees in Paris. His formal career reached a peak with his appointment as President of the French scientific research organisation (CNRS), and his overall contributions were celebrated both nationally and internationally, not least as Commander of the Legion d'Honneur and recipient of the Wolf Prize, the latter being presented in the Israeli Parliament, the Knessett. His influence continues to be strong, felt in France and beyond through his protégés and his publications.

Learning is a communication process between lecturers and students. Communication will not run without the help of means of conveying messages or media that support learning productivity. In modern times like today, more and more people, especially students, have Android smartphones as the main equipment for daily communication. In the biology department at the University of Papua at this time, learning still uses the lecture dictates as a teaching aid. If the lecture dictates are lost or wet due to waterlogging, the student must spend funds to buy a new lecture dictates. To overcome this problem, new alternatives are needed in learning aids. For this reason, android-based applications for the introduction of human organs can make it easier for lecturers to deliver the learning process material for the introduction of human organs so that learning outcomes for students become easy and interesting. This research was conducted by creating an application using the app inventor service. This application contains material about the description of the introduction of human organs. For testing the application testing uses the black box method and survey methods for application users so that the level of user satisfaction with the application can be seen.

A total of 69 couples underwent IVF treatment (averaged women age: 36.5, SD 4.9) and produced a total of 314 embryos. A single blastomere was biopsied from each embryo at the cleavage stage (day-3 post-fertilization) subjected to low-pass next generation sequencing (NGS), for the purpose of detecting aneuploidy. For each sample, the number of mtDNA reads obtained after analysis using NGS was divided by the number of reads attributable to the nuclear genome. The mtDNA copy number amount was found to be higher in aneuploid embryos than in those that were euploid (mean mtDNA ratio ± SD: 6.3 ± 7.5 versus 7.1 ± 5.8, p < 0.004; U Mann–Whitney test), whereas no statistically significant differences in mtDNA content were seen in relation to embryo morphology (6.6 ± 4.8 vs. 8.5 ± 13.6, p 0.09), sex (6.6 ± 4.1 vs. 6.2 ± 6.8, p 0.16), maternal age (6.9 ± 7.8 vs. 6.7 ± 4.5, p 0.14) or its ability to implant (7.4 ± 6.6 vs. 5.1 ± 4.6, p 0.18). The mtDNA content cannot serve as a useful biomarker at this point in development. However, further studies investigating both quantitative and qualitative aspects of mtDNA are still required to fully evaluate the relationship between mitochondrial DNA and human reproduction.

Societal concern for animals under human care has influenced our approaches to advance animal welfare in a variety of contexts. The Animal Programs Department at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium sought partnership with the Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research & Education (CHAIRE) at The Ohio State University to develop a holistic welfare approach for the animals within their department using a focal species, the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). A one-year project using the Five Domains Animal Welfare Model collected data over six 60-day periods to evaluate long-term cortisol production and behavioural observations of cheetahs under changing environmental factors. Species and individual histories were incorporated with behavioural observations and hair cortisol production, giving a holistic view of welfare. Cortisol and behavioural data were analysed using linear models to compare cheetahs at population and individual levels. Participation in a cheetah run activity, housing occupancy, and 60-day period were found to influence all behaviours within the population and stereotypic behaviour also differed within individual cheetahs. No differences in hair cortisol concentrations were found for the group, but further analysis revealed differences within individuals throughout the study. No correlation of stereotypic behaviour and cortisol levels were found. This study created a welfare assessment protocol that can be used within zoological institutes and was the first to measure cortisol concentrations in hair in cheetahs.

SummaryThe objective of this study was to compare the rates of clinical pregnancy after the transfer of vitrified and thawed human embryos on days 3, 4 and 5 of embryonic development. In this retrospective study, the results of 148 embryo transfer cycles, using embryos frozen and thawed over the 3-year period between January 2016 and December 2018 at the Gülhane Training and Research Hospital Department of Gynecology and Obsterics Reproductive Medical Center of the University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey were examined. Following embryo transfer – including 29 dissolved embryos frozen on day 3, 80 frozen on day 4, and 39 frozen on day 5 – results were examined in terms of clinical pregnancy rates. In this study, across all three groups, no significant differences were observed in terms of patient age, the number of oocytes collected, infertility reasons, the number of embryos dissolved, transfer day, or the number of embryos transferred. According to the transfer day, the rates of clinical pregnancy and ongoing pregnancy were significantly higher for embryos frozen on day 4 and transferred on day 5. Significantly higher rates of pregnancy and live birth were determined during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment with the freezing of human embryos on day 4 and the transfer of those embryos on day 5.

Objective To observe variations in the fissures, in the lobes, and in the hilar pattern of lungs and correlate these findings with clinical implications. Materials and Methods The present study was performed on random lung specimens available in the Department of Anatomy. A total of 96 lungs (47 right and 49 left) were studied for variations in the fissures and lobes, and 92 lungs (45 right and 47 left) for variations in the hilar pattern. Results Among the right-sided lungs, 70% presented incomplete horizontal fissure, 15% with absence of the horizontal fissure, and 51% with incomplete oblique fissure. Accessory fissures were also seen, but incomplete, and accounted for 17% of the total number of right lungs.Among the left-sided lungs, 62% presented incomplete oblique fissures, and 4% with absence of the oblique fissure. Accessory fissures accounted for 6% of the total number of left lungs.Regarding hilar pattern variations, 11% of the right-sided lungs showed > 2 bronchi, 69% showed > 2 pulmonary veins, and 37% showed > 1 pulmonary artery.Among the left-sided lungs, 57% showed > 1 bronchi, 21% showed > 2 pulmonary veins, and 17% showed > 1 pulmonary artery. Conclusion The field of pulmonary surgery is now highly advanced, with well-developed radiological and endoscopic techniques. Hence, a proper understanding and knowledge of these morphological variations of lung fissures and of the hilar pattern would be advantageous for surgeons, as well as for radiologists.

PISA defines the definition of scientific literacy as the ability to use scientific knowledge, identify problems, and draw conclusions based on evidence, in order to understand and make decisions about nature and the changes that occur in nature as a result of human activities (Rustaman, 2006; New South Wales Department of Education and Communities, 2011; Gormally et al., 2012). Students as prospective biology teachers must have good scientific literacy. This scientific literacy must be possessed by prospective biology teacher students for better learning for future generations. This study aims to determine the profile of understanding the scientific literacy of prospective biology teachers at the University of Borneo Tarakan. The research method used is descriptive with a quantitative descriptive approach, because the research conducted describes the scientific literacy profile of prospective biology teachers at Borneo Tarakan University. The sampling technique used is random sampling. Descriptive research is a research that describes according to the facts that exist about a natural thing (Sukmadinata, 2011). Based on the research that has been done, it can be concluded that the percentage of good scores contained in the indicators identifies scientific opinions that are valid 70%, and effective literature searches 74.4%. There is enough percentage on the indicator to understand and interpret basic statistics with a value of 54.4%. And indicators 3, 5, 6, and aim are classified as very less. Immunoreactive BNP concentrations were 0.203 ± 0.061 pmol/g wet tissue (mean ± sem) in normal parts of adrenal glands (cortex and medulla. N = 8), 0.205 ± 0.037 pmol/g wet tissue in pheochromocytomas (N = 8), 0.230 ± 0.062 pmol/g wet tissue in aldosteronomas (N = 11) and 0.180 ± 0.054 pmol/g wet tissue in adrenocortical adenomas with Cushing's syndrome (N = 4). Sephadex G-50 superfine column chromatography and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography showed that most (> 70%) of the immunoreactive BNP in the normal part of adrenal glands was eluted in the position of human BNP-32. Sephadex G-50 superfine column chromatography of immunoreactive BNP in the pheochromocytoma and aldosteronoma showed four peaks: one in the position ofγ-BNP, one in the position of BNP-32, one between γ-BNP and BNP-32 and one in the smaller molecular weight region. The present study has shown that immunoreactive BNP is present both in normal human adrenal glands and in adrenal tumors. In previous issues of NTQ. we have begun to explore the complex questions raised by the interaction of the study of theatrical performance with other disciplines – notably, in the various interpretations of ‘theatre anthropology’, in the widely divergent approaches to ‘theatre sociology’, and even in terms of its application to quantum theory. Many of these studies have made necessary assumptions in the area of human biology without, however, fully following through their implications. Jean-Marie Pradier. who teaches in the Drama Department of the University of Paris 8, here looks at theatre and other modes of performance as ‘biological events’, exploring their importance in the manifestation (and correction) of the way the human body works – in the process touching on areas as diverse as the bio-dramatic function of dreams, the significance of neo-natal rhythms, and olfactory stimulation as one of the influences upon crowd behaviour. Acknowledging the need for further research in the field. Pradier argues for the importance of the ‘body in performance’ being perceived in its biological context.

This study aimed to evaluate frequency of attached earlobes (dominant) and unattached earlobes (recessive) traits in humans of different age groups. This study was conducted in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Shaheed Benazir Abad from September to October 2020. A total of 200 families with attached and unattached earlobes were included by using non-probability convenient sampling. Data was collected regarding attached and unattached earlobes of different people. The data was collected and analysed by using SPSS version 21.0. Results of the study suggested that unattached earlobes were dominant feature, and the attached earlobe feature appears to be recessive among all 200 families. We observed that the dominant feature of the unattached earlobe was more common in the 1 to 20 years’ age group, while the recessive feature of the attached earlobe was common in 31 to 45 years old age group. The study concluded that unattached earlobes can be observed in people of every age group and associated with family traits.

Due to their immunomodulatory and regenerative capacity, human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) are promising in the treatment of patients suffering from polytrauma. However, few studies look at the effects of sera from polytraumatized patients on hBMSCs. The aim of this study was to explore changes in hBMSC properties in response to serum from polytrauma patients taken at different time points after the trauma incident. For this, sera from 84 patients with polytrauma (collected between 2010 and 2020 in our department) were used. In order to test the differential influence on hBMSC, sera from the 1st (D1), 5th (D5), and 10th day (D10) after polytrauma were pooled, respectively. As a control, sera from three healthy donors (HS), matched with respect to age and gender to the polytrauma group, were collected. Furthermore, hBMSCs from four healthy donors were used in the experiments. The pooled sera of HS, D1, D5, and D10 were analyzed by multicytokine array for pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, the influence of the different sera on hBMSCs with respect to cell proliferation, colony forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F) assay, cell viability, cytotoxicity, cell migration, and osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation was analyzed. The results showed that D5 serum significantly reduced hBMSC cell proliferation capacity compared with HS and increased the proportion of dead cells compared with D1. However, the frequency of CFU-F was not reduced in polytrauma groups compared with HS, as well as the other parameters. The serological effect of polytrauma on hBMSCs was related to the time after trauma. It is disadvantageous to use BMSCs in polytraumatized patients at least until the fifth day after polytrauma as obvious cytological changes could be found at that time point. However, it is promising to use hBMSCs to treat polytrauma after five days, combined with the concept of “Damage Control Orthopedics” (DCO).

This descriptive study aimed to obtain oral communication skills prospective biology teachers through peer and self assessment in class discussions. Subjects were 26 students of Biology Education Department 6th semester 2015/2016 academic year who contracted the courses of anatomy and physiology of the human body. The instrument used consisted of sheets of peer and self-assessment, as well as the student questionnaire. The result of research showed that the average of peer assessment for oral communication of students is different with the mean of self assessment. The spoken oral communication ability indicators that was revealed include: (1) choosing the most appropriate way to present the explanation of 66% (Good); (2) using tables, drawings, models to present an explanation of 62% (Good); (3) responds to a question from another student in the form of a convincing argument of 64% (Good); (4) interpret the obtained solution by 51% (Enough); (5) responds to a question from another student in the form of a convincing argument of 57% (Enough). ISSN 0804–4643 Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) has been found to increase insulin sensitivity and suppress insulin secretion, thereby having a potential interest as a therapeutic agent for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The aim of the present study was to investigate the direct actions of IGF-I (400 ng/ml) on human pancreatic islets, or on rat pancreatic islets, during a 48 h period in tissue culture. Insulin-like growth factor I did not affect medium insulin accumulation, DNA or insulin content or short-term glucose-induced insulin release of human islets. However, in rat islets the peptide induced a significant decrease in the insulin increase ratio in response to 16.7 mmol/l glucose. In conclusion, the present data suggest that IGF-I does not directly affect the function of human pancreatic β-cells If this in vitro data can be extrapolated to the in vivo situation, it suggests that the observed inhibitory effects of IGF-I on serum insulin levels may be secondary to peripheral effects of the peptide. Cancer cervix is the second leading cancer causing 21% of all cancer deaths. Cervical cancer can be prevented if detected by premalignant changes and is curable in its earliest stage. Various procedures including VIA/VILI, pap smear have been routinely used for the purpose of screening cervical cancers. Infection with Human Papilloma virus is the principal cause of cancer cervix. Roche COBAS HPV test was approved by US FDA on April 24, 2014 as one of the first line primary screening method for cancer cervix based on the presence of high risk HPV DNA. The FOGSI guidelines in January 2018 has suggested cobas HPV test for cancer cervix screening. This study was conducted on 100 women with high risk cervical lesions during the period of 18 months. Women attending the NCD clinic of Government Thoothukudi Medical college hospital were taken for the study. The women were to undergo VIA/VILI, Pap smear study and subjected to COBAS HR HPV Test after their consent. Cervical specimens collected in PreservCyt solution using an endocervical brush/ spatula or collected in SurePath preservative fluid using a cervical broom were sent for COBAS HR HPV test. Collected sample kits were recruited in Department of Radiation oncology, Government Thoothukudi medical college for storage at low temperature for a short period, after pooling of samples, these were sent through the Department of radiation oncology to Adayar cancer institute, Chennai, with which the department has treated with for COBAS HPV test. The results were analysed and proceeded.This study has proven that screening for high risk HPV test in cervical specimen can easily pickup the premalignant lesion with high sensitivity, specificity when compared with other screening tests. Hence, this study emphasizes the importance of implementing HPV tests that can provide a 3-year screening free interval, compared to yearly pap screening. The other advantage is that the results are available immediately reducing the frequency of visits to hospital for further follow up on colposcopy/biopsy.

Alexander Sergeevich Mozzhukhin was born on August 27, 1921, in Krasnsodar in a family of an employee. After graduating with honors from high school, A.S. Mozzhukhin became a student at the Kuibyshev Military Medical Academy and completed his medical education with honors at the military faculty of the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute. In 1943, A.S. Mozzhukhin came to the Department of Normal Physiology of S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, with whom he connected more than 30 years of his life and in which he went from adjunct to head of the department, and scientific secretary of the academic council of the academy. The scientific activity of A.S. Mozzhukhin began in the life-giving atmosphere, which was formed at the department during the leadership of Academician L.A. Orbeli and his closest assistant A.V. Lebedinsky. All scientific activity of A.S. Mozzhukhin is an organic and natural combination of fundamental problems, physiology, psychophysiology, human biology, and practical medicine. The main scientific direction of the Department of Normal Physiology under the leadership of A.S. Mozzhukhin was on the study of the interaction of afferent systems under exposure to extreme stimuli as well as on the study of human functional reserves. In addition, a team examined the physiological cost of pedagogical activity depending on the age, seniority, psychophysical characteristics of teachers, and type of training sessions. A.S. Mozzhukhin investigated the biological effects of ionizing radiation. Together with chemist F.Yu. Rachinsky, he created a radio defense drug RS-1 and became a leading Soviet radiobiologist. A.S. Mozzhukhin created a unique scientific physiological school of the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, which scientifically proved that the adaptation process was accompanied by the formation and improvement of a specific system of functional reserves for body adaptation, and the systemic factor was the result of the activity (adaptation). A.S. Mozzhukhin, while working at P.F. Lesgaft Institute of Physical Culture, proved that functional reserves have potentials in changing the functional activity of structural elements of the body and their interaction among themselves to achieve the target result, adapt to physical and psychoemotional loads, as well as the effect of various factors of the external environment on the body. The bright memory of Alexander Sergeyevich Mozzhukhin will forever remain in the hearts of his students and followers.

Objective: To assess the anti-cancer role of ascorbic acid using high doses against the cervical cancer cell line and to establish a cell culture facility in the laboratory. Study Design: In Vitro Study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Aug 2014 to Jul 2015. Methodology: HeLa cells were grown in Dulbecco’s modified eagle medium, and upon reaching confluency, cells were challenged with different doses of ascorbic acid. The MTT assay was employed to study the cytotoxic effects of increased doses of ascorbic acid on HeLa cells. Results: An increasing dose of ascorbic acid was found to be cytotoxic toward HeLa cells, and its EC50 was found to be between 5-6µM. A high dose of ascorbic acid is selectively cytotoxic to HeLa cell lines of cervical cancer, which may imply the treatment of cervical cancer patients. NF- kB inducing kinase is a salient protein in TNFα-induced NF-kB activation. Ascorbate has been reported to inhibit that activation which has anti-apoptotic roles in tumour progression. CB-Dock was employed to propose the binding sites for NIK-Ascorbate interaction, which might be a therapeutic target for cancer cells. Conclusion: The study concludes that high dose ascorbic acid is cytotoxic to cervical cancer cells HeLa and may have important implications in treating cervical cancer patients. Therapeutic intervention of this vitamin may contribute to suppressing cancer development.

The main purpose of Indonesian national education system is to create a Pancasilais human being, characterized by living with religious values and noble humanity. Islamic higher education then played a significant role by developing an education system that integrated science and religion into their curriculum by put some specific Islamic theology course/subject onto their science department. In consequence, the paradigm learning model which is phylosophicaly, holistic, and integrative is strongly needed. This kind of learning model would give birth to an aksiological aspect by emerging the spiritual factor. Thereby, religion would became a value system that always embedded in every science course/subject.

Abstract Abstract 4743 Redox signaling has emerged as an important regulator of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) self-renewal and lifespan. It is established that murine HSCs have a low level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which is correlated with stem cells properties (Ito K et al, Nat. Medicine, 2006; Jang YY and Sharkis SJ, Blood, 2007). Moreover, it was recently reported that Gpx3, a gene encoding for the ROS scavenger glutathione peroxydase 3, is a determinant of the self-renewal of HSCs (Herault O et al, J. Exp. Med., 2012). All these studies were performed in murine hematopoiesis and the objective of the present study was to quantify the ROS level and the GPX3 expression in human CD34+CD38- progenitor cells (vs CD34+CD38+ cells) harvested from bone marrow, cord blood and peripheral blood. Human bone marrow (BM) samples were obtained from patients (n=6) undergoing orthopedic surgery (Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University Hospital, Tours, France), ombilical cord bloods were obtained from women (n=5) after vaginal deliveries (Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Hospital, Tours, France), and G-CSF mobilized peripheral blood stem cells were obtained by leukapheresis from patients (n=5) of the Department of Clinical Hematology (University Hospital, Tours, France). All samples were collected from patients informed and consenting following a procedure approved by the ethical committee. The intracellular H2O2 level was quantified by flow cytometry. The cells were incubated with 10 μM DCF-DA, 5 μL of APC-Cy7-conjugated anti-CD45 mAb (A20), 2.5 μL of PE-Cy7-conjugated anti-CD34 mAb (8G12) and 2.5 μL of APC-conjugated anti-CD38 mAb (HB7) at 37°C for 10 min and then analyzed. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes were identified according to CD45/SSC gating. The subpopulation SSClowCD45intCD34+ has been split into two fractions according to the expression of CD38. The expression of GPX3 was measured by quantitative RT-PCR (vs. GAPDH) in CD34+CD38- and CD34+CD38+ FACS (MoFloTM, Beckman Coulter)-sorted cells using the same gating strategy as previously mentioned for the ROS measurement. We observed that among the different cell subpopulations, the CD34+CD38- fraction was the one which expressed the lowest level of ROS, which was higher in the CD34+CD38+ fraction in all analyses. This difference in marrow, cord blood and peripheral blood samples was on average (+/−ecm) 3.7+/−0.6, 4.0+/−2.3 and 1.3+/−0.1, respectively. Regarding the GPX3 expression in CD34+ cells, we found a high level in the marrow samples, a moderate level in the cord blood samples and a low level in the peripheral blood samples. The GPX3 expression in CD34+CD38- fraction from bone marrow, cord blood and peripheral blood was on average (+/−ecm) 4.6+/−1.2, 3.2+/−0.4 and 1.3+/−0.1 higher than in CD34+CD38+ cells, respectively. The ROS level and GPX3 expression observed in human CD34+CD38- progenitors from bone marrow and cord blood are in line with those found in mouse hematopoiesis. It's interresting to note that the mobilization process probably modify these parameters in peripheral blood progenitors. In summary, all these data suggest a key role of GPX3 in the human hematopoiesis and that ROS level could provide a good approach to functionally isolate primitive human HSCs from bone marrow and cord blood, but not from peripheral blood after G-CSF mobilization. On 27 May 1993, a normal, healthy woman in her early 30s put packages of groceries just purchased on the car seat beside her. As she sat in the driver's seat, she “…felt something painful sticking into her behind her knee.” She looked and saw something there, brushed it, but when it did not come off, she grabbed it into a soft tissue paper, and folded the paper over so the animal could not escape. She went immediately for medical assistance.The second author, a physician, examined the animal and thought it to be a dead spider, as he could not prod it into moving (many clubionids “play dead”). However, when he put it into alcohol, it writhed violently for a few moments before dying. He sent it to the Department of Entomology, University of Alberta. The spider was determined to be a female of Cheiracanthium inclusum (Hentz, 1847), a first record for Alberta, and only the second record for Canada.

Mr. Morhard is the Director of Policy and Partnerships at Ginkgo Bioworks, a Boston-based synthetic biology company. He obtained a J.D. at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Law. Formerly, Mr. Morhard has served as the Head of COVID Action Platform and Lead of Global Health Security at the World Economic Forum. From 2014 to 2016, he was the Branch Chief of International Partnerships at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he engaged with international partners to improve collective capacities and handle public health emergencies. We spoke with Mr. Morhard’s about his professional experience in biosecurity, insights in capacity building, and outlooks about leveraging advancements in biotechnology and the growing bioeconomy to address future pandemics and other significant societal and environmental challenges.
