Abstract Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practice (VietGAP) has been introduced in many provinces in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam to enhance the competitive advantage to fruit growers, including Idor longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) growers, to explore the stricter domestic and export markets and increase the income of the fruit growers in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. This article presents a case study on the impacts of adopting VietGAP on the income of fruit growers (Idor longan) in the Mekong Delta by applying both T-test and Propensity Score Matching of 180 VietGAP and non-VietGAP adopters. The results show that applying VietGAP can reduce production cost, increase revenue, and profit to fruit growers. This is evidence to prove the benefits of adopting VietGAP and encourage the expansion of VietGAP to many fruits and other agricultural sectors in Vietnam.

After the fall of South Vietnam to North Vietnamese forces in 1975, Vietnam has remained virtually isolated from the rest of the world. With the global political changes of the past 10 years. the Hanoi Government succeeded in reducing Vietnam's international isolation in part by attempting to open the country's door to foreign visitors. The country stretches along the eastern coast of the Indo-Chinese peninsula and is slightly larger than Italy. It is ‘S-shaped’, broad in the north and south and very narrow in the centre (Fig. 1). The country's main cultivated areas are the Red River delta in the north and the Mekong delta containing Ho Chi Min city (Saigon) in the south.

The Mekong Delta is the agricultural heart of Vietnam and home to nearly 20 million people. Its contributions to the entire country and global food consumers are enormous. The Delta’s delicate ecosystem, however, is distressed by several domestic and regional forces, including rural development, resource mismanagement, upstream damming, climate change, and failure to implement policies to link several systems. The authors examine trends and forces affecting the Delta and offer plausible adjustments to enhance the watershed’s well-being. Solutions will come from scale economies; higher value crops and branding; improvements to marketing channels, technologies to improve data collection and analysis, crop yields, and communication; foreign and domestic investment; and integrative policies to sustain Vietnam’s southern Delta and the entire Mekong Basin.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to first examine the factors affecting the intra-household perception of climate change. Second, the study investigates the impact of the perception of climatic stress on the operators’ and spouses’ intra-household adaptation strategies (farm and household financial strategies). Design/methodology/approach The study uses household survey data from Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. The study uses probit and negative binomial count data approaches to evaluate the empirical model. Findings Results confirm the existence of intra-household gender differences in the adaptation strategies. The authors found that although spouses perceive climatic stress, they are less likely to adapt to such stresses when it comes farming enterprise, but more likely to adapt to household financial strategies. In contrast, farm operators, in the presence of climatic stresses, undertake both farm and household finance adaptation strategies. Practical implications Investment in climate smart agriculture can help households in managing climatic stresses. Originality/value A farmer in Asia, and Vietnam in particular, faces significant risks from climatic changes. In Vietnam, agriculture is easily affected by natural disasters and climatic changes. This study provides insights into the perception of climatic changes by operators and spouses in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. Perceived changes in the climate have a greater impact on women because they typically lack the necessary tools to adapt to climate change. The current findings could be useful in managing climatic risk in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and be helpful to policymakers in designing risk management strategies in response to climatic changes.

This article provides a direction for furfure research in small and medium enterprises invest in foreigner countries; specially in Vietnam market. The major projects that Korea Enterprises invested covered mostly in the Northern of Vietnam provinces such as Bac Ninh, Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen. Meanwhile, in southern Vietnam, the Mekong River Delta region with many projects calling for investment in agriculture and tourism has not attracted much attention from Korean investors. The article using the method of descriptive statistics to overview the project investment in agriculture and tourism of the Mekong Delta of Vietnam and points out the advantages of Korean small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in these two sectors. The results of study showed that Mekong River Delta has incentive policies for investment. Besides, with the general policy of Vietnamese government for agriculture and tourism projects, they had incentive policies for foreigner invest in these fields. Moreover, Korea has many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as well as investing experience in Vietnam. This articles strongly encourages the research of the opportunity for foreigner SMEs invest in tourism and agriculture in other countries, especially emerging market as Vietnam.

The Cham are commonly defined as an ethnic group associated with the ancient Southeast Asian kingdoms of Champa. Corresponding to present-day central and southern Vietnam, these kingdoms were progressively conquered by the Vietnamese Dai Viet empire from the 15th to 19th centuries. The article sets out to trace the extent to which a connection between Cham and Champa is actually articulated in Vietnam’s relevant museums and heritage sites. The nationalist narrative in the title refers to that of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which tends to underplay the Dai Viet empire’s progressive ‘southward march’ from its centre in the Red River Delta towards the Mekong Delta. The article concludes that on the whole, juxtaposing representations of Cham ethnicity with Champa artefacts does not amount to a real engagement with the legacy of Champa, though we discuss limited exceptions.

River sand mining has been a concerning problem for the southern Asian developing nations. The rampant growth of urbanisation in developing countries has led to an extensive need for and consumption of sand. The Mekong River and its delta are an essential part of southern Vietnam, and also a global biodiversity hub that is currently being exhausted by intensive sand mining. The understanding of the cause–effect of the sand mining over the Mekong delta region and river, from a systems-thinking perspective, is lacking, not only with Vietnam but also with other countries along the Mekong River. The DPSIR framework (Driver–Pressure–State–Impact–Response) is a useful tool to assess and describe the cause–effect within an ecosystem to aid in a better systems-thinking approach for stakeholders, policy makers, and governance managers to draft response measures. This study used the DPSIR framework to assess the different effects of sand mining on the ecosystem services and human well-being in the Mekong River and delta region of Vietnam. Rapid population growth, urbanisation, and infrastructure development needs remain as primary drivers for the sand consumption. The DPSIR study showed a holistic view of several interlinked pressures and state changes in Vietnam’s Mekong, along with some potential responses, to form systematic, sustainable approaches for mitigating and adapting the impacts caused by extensive river sand mining.

Vietnam is a country with strengths in agricultural production, rich and valuable agricultural products. Vietnam is often described as a giant boom with two big granaries at both ends, the Red River Delta and the Mekong Delta. Besides, the appropriate weather and climate conditions and fertile soil have created an ideal environment for rice production, thereby making rice a strong export item for Vietnam. In order to boost export rice output, the role of the transport and logistics system is very important. If the transport system is equipped and linked together, it will create added value for the components of the system, while reducing transport costs, warehousing costs, distribution, and circulation, ... increase farmers' income, profits for businesses, create great export value for the country. One of the most important tasks to achieve this goal is to optimize Vietnam's rice export system. This issue is always urgent, not only for the executive agency, macro-management of the State but also for organizations, businesses, ... involved in the production and export of rice. This paper focuses on analyzing and assessing the current situation of Vietnam's export rice transport system and forecasting the future in each period. From there, select the basic parameters (or criteria) to build the optimal export rice transport system. The author has built a general and specific model for 02 transshipment scenarios including scenario 1 is Saigon port, scenario 2 is Saigon port and Can Tho port. The core of the paper is a detailed calculation with 05 options for each scenario, based on the selected basic parameters, with the LINGO 13.0 FOR WINDOWS software. From there, identify and select the most optimal plan for Vietnam's export rice transport system in general and the Mekong Delta in particular.

Vietnam is a riparian country located in most downstream area of the Mekong river basin which is also shared by other states namely China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. While the Central Highlands of Vietnam has a great potential for hydropower development in tributaries of Mekong river, the Mekong delta in Vietnam territory is rich in natural resources which are favorable for agricultural development. However, besides local constraints which have being gradually remedied by Vietnam, the development of the Mekong delta is subject to, in both terms of quantity and quality, availability of water resources which relates to the water use of or discharge into the river of upper riparians. With a view to co-developing these resources in a sustainable and mutual benefit manner, Vietnam has cooperated with other states through framework of the Mekong River Commission set up by the 1995 Mekong Agreement. This paper describes the strategy and action plan applied by Viet Nam National Mekong Committee to reach the sustainable development of the Mekong river basin in general and of Vietnam parts located in the Mekong basin in particular.

In order to help farmers improve production, there is a need to link input and output operations, and agricultural cooperatives may be the best form. The cooperatives in Vietnam in general and in the Mekong River Delta in particular, however, still have certain drawbacks in their operation. The major objective of this paper is to find critical success factors of the agricultural cooperatives in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam. Based on direct interviews with 125 agricultural cooperative chairmen in 5 surveyed provinces, the findings of this study found that factors such as operating environment, management, and resources were closely related to the success of these cooperatives. Specifically, this study found that the infrastructure and socioeconomic conditions where the cooperatives operated, the operational scale of the cooperatives, the size of cultivated areas, the capital amount, the educational attainment of cooperative managers, the ratio of trained managers and other related resources played an important role in the success of the cooperatives in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam.

The article discusses the features of the socio-environmental situation in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. The first part analyzes the causes of its degradation under the influence of factors related to the economic development of the river both in Vietnam and abroad and multiplied by the consequences of climate change. The destruction of the Mekong Delta ecosystem calls into question the sustainability of the regions future economic development and threatens the countrys food security. The second part of the article analyzes the policy promoted by the state to minimize the environmental consequences of ongoing development projects and adaptation to climate change. The author comes to the conclusion that despite the existing difficulties in implementing the planned measures, the state is ready to create conditions for the transition to sustainable development in the Mekong Delta.

The Cuu Long river Delta, covering majority of the downstream portion of the Mekong Delta, has four diverse wetland ecosystems in Dong Thap Muoi: coastal, inland, coastal estuarine and special wetland ecosystems. In the past decades, these ecosystems and their services (especially provisioning ecosystem) have been strongly exploited that resulted to its declining ability to meet increasing human demand for natural resources. Based on analysis of trends of change in ecosystems and their services, drivers of change in ecosystems and their services in the Cuu Long River Delta are rapid population growth, economic development pressure and management. Recommendation on management responses at macro-level for the whole region and at micro-level for provinces and environment and natural resource sectors were formulated based on the condition and trend assessment and driver analysis.

This study investigates the relationship between rewards and the organizational commitment (OC) of 5,522 employees who work for 5 Japanese companies in Vietnam focusing on the difference between Red River Delta (Hanoi and surrounding provinces) and South East (Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding provinces). Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that co-worker support had stronger influence on OC in Red River Delta than in South East. On the other hand, benefit satisfaction had stronger influence on OC in South East than in Red River Delta. Other rewards (i.e., fatigue, supervisor support and autonomy) were equally related with OC for both areas. These results mean that OC-rewards relationship differs between regions and indicate signs of increasing individualism among Vietnamese employees in more economically developed parts of the country. Discussions and implications concerning human resource management in Vietnam are offered.

Abstract This article examines the spatial spillover effects of transport infrastructure in regions of Vietnam. We apply the spatial Durbin model to estimate the regional spillover of transport infrastructure to Vietnam’s economic growth from 2000-2019. The results show that positive evidence exists in each period due to the connective nature of the transport infrastructure at the national level. At the regional level, transport infrastructure spillover effects vary considerably over time among four macro-regions of Vietnam: the southern region always has a positive spillover effect; the Northern region had adverse spillover effects in the period 2000-2009 and positive in the period 2010-2019; the Central region had negative spillovers in both periods; in the case of the economic region of the Mekong Delta, negative spillovers can be observed after 2010. The analysis has shown that changes in spillover among regions are closely related to the shift of production factors in Vietnam over the past two decades.

The paper used results of the survey of 100 clients from 24 PCFs in 3 provinces in the Mekong Delta River in Vietnam. By applying Explanatory Factor Analysis methodology, the result of study showed that tangibles (TAN), responsiveness (RES), reliability (REL), assurances (ASS), and empathy (EMP)affecting to the service quality of PCFs in Mekong Delta River in Vietnam. The research found that PCFs’ service quality would be increased if their empathy and tangibility improved. Then, PCFs’ managers should pay more on creating incentives for credit officers to improve their sympathy and understanding customers needs as well as enhancing appearances of PCF staffs and transaction offices.

The Ma river delta located in the North Central of VietNam is the third largest ones in Vietnam following the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta. However, there are not many researches on sedimentary. This study aims to determine the Characteristics of the Holocene sedimentary facies in coastal plain of the Song Ma Delta based on observation of sedimentary structure and analysis of grain size, diatom, flora, pollen and 14C dating collected for the drill core (LKTH2 borehole) from the coastal plain of the Song Ma river delta. Research results identify 08 facies consisting 02 facies of transgression period and 06 facies of regression period. During transgression period, 02 facies of tidal flat clayish silt and bay silty clay facies were formed. Of which, tidal flat clayish silt face was formed in 7,883 ± 43 14C yr BP. After the maximum flooding of the sea, the delta was initiated and 06 facies were formed during the regression period i.e. prodelta silty clay, delta front clayish silt, tidal flat sandy - silty clay, sand ridge, lagoonal sandy silty clay, and flood plain silty clay facies. The tidal flat sandy - silty clay facies occurred in 6.951± 38 14Cyr BP caused by sea level fall and the coastline was identified around the LKTH2 bore hole at that time. Integration of sedimentary facies of the sand ridge and lagoonal sandy silty clay facies shows that the Song Ma Delta was dominated by wave process during its evolution.

A vertical offset model for Vietnam and its surrounding areas was determined based on the differences between height anomalies derived from 779 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/levelling points and those derived from a dedicated high-resolution gravimetric-only quasigeoid model called GEOID_LSC. First, the deterministic transformation model to effectively fit the differences between the quasigeoid and GNSS/levelling heights was based on a third-order polynomial model. Second, the residual height anomalies have been interpolated to a grid employing Least-Squares Collocation. Finally, the distortions were restored to the residual grid. This model can be used for combination with a gravimetric quasigeoid model in GNSS levelling. The quality of GNSS/levelling data in Vietnam was analyzed and evaluated in this study. The annual subsidence rate from ALOS-1 was also used to analyze the effects of subsidence on the quality of GNSS/levelling data in the Mekong Delta. From this we made corrections to improve the accuracy of GNSS/levelling data in this region. The offset model was evaluated using cross-validation technique by comparing with GNSS/levelling data. Results indicate that the offset model has a standard deviation of 5.9 cm in the absolute sense. Based on this offset model, GNSS levelling can be carried out in most of Vietnam’s territory complying third-order levelling requirements, while the accuracy requirements for fourth-order levelling networks is met for the entire country. This model in combination with the developed gravimetric quasigeoid model should also contribute to the modernization of Vietnam’s height system. We also used high-quality GNSS/levelling data and the determined quasigeoid model to determine the geopotential value W0 for the Vietnam Local Vertical Datum. The gravity potential of the Vietnam Local Vertical Datum is estimated equal to W 0 LVD = 62,636,846.81 ± 0.70 m2s−2 with the global equipotential surface realized by the conventional value W0 = 62,636,853.4 m2s−2.

The model of Late Pleistocene-Holocene sequence stratigraphy of the subaqueous Red River delta and the adjacent shelf is proposed by interpretation of high-resolution seismic documents and comparison with previous research results on Holocene sedimentary evolution on the delta plain. Four units (U1, U2, U3, and U4) and four sequence stratigraphic surfaces (SB1, TS, TRS and MFS) were determined. The formation of these units and surfaces is related to the global sea-level change in Late Pleistocene-Holocene. SB1, defined as the sequence boundary, was generated by subaerial processes during the Late Pleistocene regression and could be remolded partially or significantly by transgressive ravinement processes subsequently. The basal unit U1 (fluvial formations) within incised valleys is arranged into the lowstand systems tract (LST) formed in the early slow sea-level rise ~19-14.5 cal.kyr BP, the U2 unit is arranged into the early transgressive systems tract (E-TST) deposited mainly within incised-valleys under the tide-influenced river to estuarine conditions in the rapid sea-level rise ~14.5-9 cal.kyr BP, the U3 unit is arranged into the late transgressive systems tract (L-TST) deposited widely on the continental shelf in the fully marine condition during the late sea-level rise ~9-7 cal.kyr BP, and the U4 unit represents for the highstand systems tract (HST) with clinoform structure surrounding the modern delta coast, extending to the water depth of 25-30 m, developed by sediments from the Red River system in ~3-0 cal.kyr BP.ReferencesBadley M.E., 1985. SUMMARYIn Vietnam, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 infections in poultry often occur without concomitant clinical signs and outbreaks are not consistently reported. Live bird markets represent a convenient site for surveillance that does not rely on farmers' notifications. Two H5N1 surveys were conducted at live bird markets/slaughter points in 39 districts (five provinces) in the Red River, Mekong delta, and central Vietnam during January and May 2011. Oropharyngeal and rectal swab samples from 12 480 ducks were tested for H5N1 by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction in pools of five. Traders and stallholders were interviewed using standardized questionnaires; 3·3% of pools tested positive. The highest prevalence (6·6%) corresponded to the Mekong delta, and no H5N1 was detected in the two Red River provinces. The surveys identified key risk behaviours of traders and stallholders. It is recommended that market surveys are implemented over time as a tool to evaluate progress in HPAI control in Vietnam.

International students are becoming a significant part of global mobility. Studies from different parts of the world have shown they not only have impacts on education but also contribute to tourism. They make up a distinctive group of international tourists characterized by travelling frequency, types of tourist activities, accommodation preferences, levels of expenditure and potentials of attracting visits of friends and relatives. In other words, international tourists not only directly contribute to but could also have long term impact on the destination country's tourism. As Vietnam has proactively engage in international integration in higher education, which would result in an increase in the influx of international students, an exploratory study on this group of potential tourists is needed. Based on researches from different countries this article identifies features of international students in conducting tourist activities before proposing recommendations for more effective engagement in this group of clients with the highlights of the role of Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) and linkages among higher education institutions in Ho Chi Minh City Metropolitan Area and the Mekong Delta.

The study aims to determine the evolution of salt intrusion in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Salt water appeared in the mouths of rivers many years ago, but its values in 2019-2020 are considered the highest in the history of observations and surpass the data of 2016 (the year with the highest salinity). In 2020, the phenomenon of salt invasion will strongly manifest itself in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam (in the lower reaches of the Mekong River), the penetration of salt water deep into the mainland and the marginal salinity of 4 (g/l) deeper than 5-25 km, depending on the range. The main reason for this is the change in the flow of water from the headwaters. During the dry season, the flow in the estuary is completely dependent on the flow of water from the upper Mekong River, and the construction of hydroelectric power plants affects the water content of the river below the dams. The second reason is the inefficient operation of the fresh water circulation system between rivers during the dry season in Vietnam. Some other causes are related to climate change, such as rising sea levels at high tide, which allows salt water to flow inland from the mouth, as well as a rather wide shape of the mouth and deep penetration into the land, which contributes to faster penetration. All this negatively affects the environment and sustainable economic development of the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam.
