Let τn be a random tree distributed as a Galton-Watson tree with geometric offspring distribution conditioned on {Zn = an} where Zn is the size of the nth generation and (an, n ∈ ℕ*) is a deterministic positive sequence. We study the local limit of these trees τn as n →∞ and observe three distinct regimes: if (an, n ∈ ℕ*) grows slowly, the limit consists in an infinite spine decorated with finite trees (which corresponds to the size-biased tree for critical or subcritical offspring distributions), in an intermediate regime, the limiting tree is composed of an infinite skeleton (that does not satisfy the branching property) still decorated with finite trees and, if the sequence (an, n ∈ ℕ*) increases rapidly, a condensation phenomenon appears and the root of the limiting tree has an infinite number of offspring.

As a generalization of Rota–Baxter algebras, the concept of an Ω-Rota–Baxter could also be regarded as an algebraic abstraction of the integral analysis. In this paper, we introduce the concept of an Ω-dendriform algebra and show the relationship between Ω-Rota–Baxter algebras and Ω-dendriform algebras. Then, we provide a multiplication recursion definition of typed, angularly decorated rooted trees. Finally, we construct the free Ω-Rota–Baxter algebra by typed, angularly decorated rooted trees.

In the rites of seeing off the conscripts in the Kostroma and Vologda regions the Ural Federal University Toponymic expedition recorded the custom of decorating a tree at the exit from the village or hanging such a decorated tree on the pediment of a recruit’s house, and the custom of breaking or wrapping the trees tops on the edge of the village (this was done also to mark some other significant events in human life). The article shows that these customs have different origins, they were included from different sources into the recruit’s leaving rite during its formation in the 18th–19th centuries. The custom of decorating trees is a direct borrowing from the wedding ceremony and comes from the common Slavic tradition to decorate a wedding tree, symbolizing “girlish beauty”. The custom of breaking a tree top has a substratum origin and probably goes back to the tradition of the Kostroma Meria, which is reconstructed on the basis of Uralo-Yukaghir concepts about a person’s connection with a tree and the ancient custom of marking important events in human life (rites de passages) by making a personal tree by breaking off branches on coniferous trees preserved by Karelians (karsikko), Udmurts and Yukaghirs, which penetrated into North America in ancient times and was found among the Karok Indians in Northern California.

Attack–defense trees can be used as part of threat and risk analysis for system development and maintenance. They are an extension of attack trees with defense measures. Moreover, tree nodes can be decorated with attributes, such as probability, impact, and penalty, to increase the expressiveness of the model. Attribute values are typically assigned based on cognitive estimations and historically recorded events. This paper presents a practical case study with attack–defense trees. First, the authors create an attack–defense tree for an RFID-based goods management system for a warehouse. Then, they explore how to use a rich set of attributes for attack and defense nodes and assign and aggregate values to obtain condensed information, such as performance indicators or other key security figures. The authors discuss different modeling choices and tradeoffs. The case study led them to define concrete guidelines that can be used by software developers, security analysts, and system owners when performing similar assessments.

Abstract This article discusses two near-complete ceramic vessels—a deep, cup-shaped bowl and a shallow bowl/plate—found in recent excavations carried out at the rural site of el-Khirba/Nes Ziyyona in central Israel, in an early Abbasid context dated to the ninth century. The vessels bear unusual painted decorations on their exterior and interior. The decoration of the first bowl consists of alternating pairs of large black and white palm trees and large birds. The second bowl/plate is decorated with eight stylized trees emerging from a central circle, with small circles between them; these motifs were drawn in black over a white-painted surface. These bowls are associated with a local fine ware ceramic group, known as Fine Byzantine (or Fine Islamic) Ware, which originated in the Jerusalem region. However, their decorations reflect stylistic traditions familiar across the Early Islamic Near East and beyond, including from statuary works, illustrated manuscripts, and other ceramics. Altogether, it can be suggested that rural elites in Early Islamic Palestine used luxury ceramics decorated with pan-Islamic patterns as a way of identifying themselves with cosmopolitan, pan-Islamic society.

AbstractA combinator-based parser is a parser constructed directly from a BNF grammar, using higher-order functions (combinators) to model the alternative and sequencing operations of BNF. This paper describes a method for constructing parser combinators that can be used to build efficient predictive parsers which accurately report the cause of parsing errors. The method uses parsers that return values (parse trees or error indications) decorated with one of four tags.

We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and coloured permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalisations of Eulerian polynomials for coloured permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by plants are closely associated with plant metabolism and can serve as biomarkers for disease diagnosis. Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as citrus greening or yellow shoot disease, is a lethal threat to the multi-billion-dollar citrus industry. Early detection of HLB is vital for removal of susceptible citrus trees and containment of the disease. Gas sensors are applied to monitor the air quality or toxic gases owing to their low-cost fabrication, smooth operation, and possible miniaturization. Here, we report on the development, characterization, and application of electrical biosensor arrays based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) decorated with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) for the detection of four VOCs—ethylhexanol, linalool, tetradecene, and phenylacetaldehyde—that serve as secondary biomarkers for detection of infected citrus trees during the asymptomatic stage. SWNTs were noncovalently functionalized with ssDNA using π–π interaction between the nucleotide and sidewall of SWNTs. The resulting ssDNA-SWNT hybrid structure and device properties were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, and electrical measurements. To monitor changes in the four VOCs, gas biosensor arrays consisting of bare SWNTs before and after being decorated with different ssDNA were employed to determine the different concentrations of the four VOCs. The data was processed using principal component analysis (PCA) and neural net fitting (NNF).

This article tells about the life and work of the great philosopher, mystic and genius Jaloliddin Rumi. His philosophical outlook, philosophical teachings are analyzed. Rumi's poems spread at wide levels and became favorites at weddings, dinner parties, and burials. His phrases became imprinted on clothes, and decorated Christmas trees, and musical instrument companies (especially percussionists) decided to embed verses from his poetry on their products. On social networking sites, there are dozens of pages dedicated to publishing Rumi's poems with their reproduction by attaching music and video clips.

An integral equation is a way to encapsulate the relationships between a function and its integrals. We develop a systematic way of describing Volterra integral equations – specifically an algorithm that reduces any separable Volterra integral equation into an equivalent one in operator-linear form, i.e., one that only contains iterated integrals. This serves to standardize the presentation of such integral equations so as to only consider those containing iterated integrals. We use the algebraic object of the integral operator, the twisted Rota-Baxter identity, and vertex-edge decorated rooted trees to construct our algorithm.

Jonas MardosaThe decorated verba in Western Belarus and Eastern Lithuania in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century Various consecrated symbols play a special role in folk culture and folk religion. In the Christian liturgy, the verba (palm) is a symbol having a concrete religious meaning. In the second half of the 20th century, in Western Belarus and Eastern Lithuania, a tendency to consider verba from the aesthetic point of view emerged. An exceptional case among the verba (between Belarusian, Russian, Polish, and Lithuanian believers) are the decorated symbol, which may be called palm-shape verba.Amongst the believers of Belarus, regardless of confession, the decorated verba (with flowers) has become a symbol of the contemporary religious identity. Verbas with decorations in Eastern Lithuania are more popular amongst Polish believers; in Western Belarus, they are blessed regardless of confessional and nationality differences. In the beginning of the 21st century, three main variants of palm-shaped verba may be found. The first variant is made from willow or juniper twigs decorated with dry and green flower blossoms (or the twigs of both trees are used together). The second and very popular decoration variant is artificial flowers attached to a willow twig. In the third variant, the blossoms made from threads are arranged along the whole length of a willow twig.An exceptional case among the decorated verbas in Eastern Lithuania are the Vilnius verba. This variant of decorated verba first appeared at the start of the 19th century in the surrounding areas of Vilnius. Originally, these verbas were associated with the Polish religious and folk culture of Southeast Lithuania. In the second half of the 20th century, the Vilnius verbas were strongly linked with the Catholic Lithuanian and Polish folk culture of the Vilnius region, but have not been popular amongst the believers of Belarus.Considerable differences may be noticed in the scope and content of decorative elements in the verba of Lithuania and Belarus. In Lithuania, decorated verbas are more popular among urban Catholics. Thus, verba reveals the diversity of the Christian tradition, which comprises the exceptional features of the contemporary folk religion in Eastern Lithuania and Western Belarus. Through the link between the verba and the ethnic and confessional communities, these variants of the symbol become an important identity-forming factor for the inhabitants of Western Belarus and Eastern Lithuania in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century.

The theoretical prediction of drug-decorated nanoparticles (DDNPs) has become a very important task in medical applications. For the current paper, Perturbation Theory Machine Learning (PTML) models were built to predict the probability of different pairs of drugs and nanoparticles creating DDNP complexes with anti-glioblastoma activity. PTML models use the perturbations of molecular descriptors of drugs and nanoparticles as inputs in experimental conditions. The raw dataset was obtained by mixing the nanoparticle experimental data with drug assays from the ChEMBL database. Ten types of machine learning methods have been tested. Only 41 features have been selected for 855,129 drug-nanoparticle complexes. The best model was obtained with the Bagging classifier, an ensemble meta-estimator based on 20 decision trees, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.96, and an accuracy of 87% (test subset). This model could be useful for the virtual screening of nanoparticle-drug complexes in glioblastoma. All the calculations can be reproduced with the datasets and python scripts, which are freely available as a GitHub repository from authors.

In August 1998 the German archaeological world was stunned when two amateur archaeologists found decorated gold-sheet ornaments on a hill in Bavaria north of Munich, near a farm named Bernstorf, in the commune of Kranzberg. A Bronze Age fortified enclosure was known there, local amateurs having excavated it earlier in the 1990s; later, permission was granted for gravel extraction, trees were cleared and it was in this disturbed area that the gold appeared. The authorities were quickly alerted. Both the Staatssammlung in Munich (Bavarian State Archaeological Museum) and the Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (BLfD, Bavarian State Office for Monument Care) took part in inspections and, subsequently, excavations. More gold, including a ‘diadem’, appeared and, in late September 1998, perforated lumps of amber. Then in November 2000, on the edge of an area under excavation by the BLfD, came the sensational discovery of two incised pieces of amber hailed as Mycenaean.

Six new species are described in the new genus Corroboreethrips: C. kallus, sp. nov., C. siagonus, sp. nov., C. stomius, sp. nov., C. subsolanus, sp. nov., C. suspectus, sp. nov. and C. zophus, sp. nov. They all live in cavities beneath thin, split bark of slender branches on particular Acacia tree species in arid parts of Australia, and two species-pairs show a vicariant distribution between Queensland and Western Australia. In life, adults of these minute black, wingless thrips are remarkable in appearance, decorated with irregular rows of tiny white dots, the product of numerous short, stout dorsal setae coated with a white waxy substance. The structure of the antennae of these species is unique within the Phlaeothripidae, with segments VII and VIII short and forming a small style that is closely joined to segment VI, segment III produced basally into a sleeve around the pedicel, and segment II strongly asymmetric. The mouth cone varies in length among the six species more than in any other known thrips genus. In two species it is relatively short, extending to the fore coxae, but in two others it extends as far as the hind coxae and is thus relatively longer than in any other phlaeothripid.

A comprehensive phylogeny of species, i.e., a tree of life, has potential uses in a variety of contexts, including research, education, and public policy. Yet, accessing the tree of life typically requires special knowledge, complex software, or long periods of training. The Phylotastic project aims make it as easy to get a phylogeny of species as it is to get driving directions from mapping software. In prior work, we presented a design for an open system to validate and manage taxon names, find phylogeny resources, extract subtrees matching a user’s taxon list, scale trees to time, and integrate related resources such as species images. Here, we report the implementation of a set of tools that together represent a robust, accessible system for on-the-fly delivery of phylogenetic knowledge. This set of tools includes a web portal to execute several customizable workflows to obtain species phylogenies (scaled by geologic time and decorated with thumbnail images); more than 30 underlying web services (accessible via a common registry); and code toolkits in R and Python (allowing others to develop custom applications using Phylotastic services). The Phylotastic system, accessible via http://www.phylotastic.org , provides a unique resource to access the current state of phylogenetic knowledge, useful for a variety of cases in which a tree extracted quickly from online resources (as distinct from a tree custom-made from character data) is sufficient, as it is for many casual uses of trees identified here.

This study seeks to find appropriate landscape patterns of campus based on students’ preferences. A photo questionnaire containing scenes of different types of campus landscapes was distributed among 200 students in University of Tabriz, Iran. The results emphasized the importance of vegetation, seating areas and water features of campuses. Also, students prefer open spaces consisting of lawn and grass (M = 3.31, S.D. = 1.00). Students also prefer a campus, which has a natural base, landscape elements and seating places, while the least preferred (M = 2.96, S.D. = 0.89) scenes comprise a large amount of hardscape. Students had a different preference for landscaping of open study area and leisure time place where the studying area should be designed with vertical natural elements. Shading trees and benches were also highlighted as very important furniture for these places. In terms of spatial organization, the content analysis revealed that these areas should be open and spacious. Places for leisure time need to be decorated with informal landscape design for creating a pleasant view. Designing a landscape with various forms will make these places more pleasant. Landscaped areas provide individual, distinctive features and play an important role in shaping the environment of a private garden plot. The authors of the present study developed a landscaping project for a private garden plot at 80 Izmailivska Street, city of Zaporizhzhia. One of the main points of the works was to conduct an inventory of the available plantings. The authors identified the species composition of trees and shrubs located on the landscaping territory. In the project territory, the largest area is occupied by herbaceous cover and is 32.5%, while the smallest area is allocated for tree plantations – only 1.9%. The area under paving and flower beds will be increased at the expense of the territory that is not occupied in the reconstruction project. In the project area, most woody plants require only pruning and are in good condition. Pruning is planned for 10 black mulberry trees (Mórus nígra L.), remnants of a privet hedge (Ligústrum vulgáre), one bush of Vanhoutt Spiraea (Spiraea × vanhouttei (Briot) Zabel.) and one bush of rosehip corymbose (Rosa corymbifera), which have lost their decorative appeal. The formation of plantings in this study aims to create an orderly shape of the crowns of trees and shrubs, which will give them a geometric shape. For decorative purposes, it is also planned to plant the following plants: boxwood tree (Buxus sempervirens var.), iris brazenberry (Iris L. brazenberry), moss phlox (Phlox subulata L.). On the site located to the east of the outbuilding, it is proposed to set up a flower garden from groundcover and flowering plants in a peculiar geometric shape that would follow the shape of the path. On the north-western side of the plot, it is planned to replace the fence with a modular gabion wall covered with rambling vine. The colour of elements of this style should be made in cool, grey tones, white, blue and purple colours are well combined. As a result, it is planned to set up a decorative pond near the arbour, the contour of which will be decorated with smooth stones. The rest of the area is to be covered with a rolled lawn. As a result, an individual and beautiful style of landscape design will be selected for the project area

Opened in January 2019, the Museum Susch crowned the collecting efforts of Grażyna Kulczyk, who, following her failed attempts at establishing a contemporary art Museum in Poznan and Warsaw, finally found home for her collection in a small Swiss village located between two Alps resorts: Sankt Moritz and Davos. The combination of both spectacular mountainous landscape and the edifices of an old convent into which the display has been built, as well as the purposefully created art pieces, contribute to creating a peculiar atmosphere of the place. Nature, architecture, and art have all merged into one total work here, namely into a contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk. Poland is echoed in the Museum: e.g. the genuine name of the institution: ‘Muzeum Susch’ is a combination of Polish and German words; furthermore, the pieces presented in the collection are to a great extent made up of works by contemporary Polish artists; wooden walls of the Museum Café are decorated with prints showing the Zakopane ‘Under Fir Trees’ (Pod Jedlami) Villa. The question whether Grażyna Kulczyk’s collection has found its final home here, or whether it is still possible for it to return to Poland, continues open. The collector herself does not provide an unambiguous answer to this.

This paper studies the materials, tools, and artisans recorded in the Posagongshin bok'undogam ŭigwe to understand the significance of Iship kongshin hoemaengch’u in the history of crafts in Korea. Iship kongshin hoemaengch’u is an elegantly decorated twenty-four-meter-long scroll made for King Sukjong, containing oaths of allegiance to the king in a time of political upheaval and reforms, and the names of 489 meritorious subjects. In making this scroll, a special directorate was set up and several government offices, including the Directorate of Fabrics, provided materials and tools, and artisans of various fields were assigned. The long fabric was made in the traditional way by cooperation of yŏnsajang(thread artisan), badijang(badi for loom artisan) and ch’ojang(silk artisan). The attaching layers were made by pulling the wooden frame tight with bamboo trees in the spacious floor of the Ministry of War building at Gyeongdeokgung Palace. The scroll was bordered with brilliant silk, and was fitted with jade caps made by okjang(jade artisan) from Pyeongando Province and a cord made by tahoejang(threaded cord artisan) was attached. Court painters drew guidelines for writings and official scribes wrote the oaths and names in regular script. Conclusively, Iship kongshin hoemaengch’u shows the best of court craftsmanship made in cooperation between skilled artisans of specialized fields, using the materials of highest quality to manifest King Sukjong’s will to assert his authority.

Christmas and Easter in the public space. The example of shop windows in Świętojańska Street in Gdynia The aim of the article was to find an answer to the question about the presence of the religious aspect of Christmas and Easter in the public space. The field studies carried out in December 2015 and March 2016 showed a small share of Christmas and Easter decorations in the main shopping and service street, which is Świętojańska Street in Gdynia. In the case of Christmas, only 41% of shop windows had any Christmas-themed decorations, and before Easter, the percentage was only 13%. In December, commercial and service outlets were most often decorated with light strings and Christmas trees, and in March with eggs of various sizes, colours, and patterns. In a group of over 250 open outlets in Świętojańska Street, ornaments directly related to the sacred sphere (a manger, angel, Easter Lamb, cross, the words “Hallelujah” or “Christmas”) were present in only a few of them. Therefore, the traditional Christmas and Easter holidays in Poland are moderately emphasized and present in the public space of the main street. The statements are justified that in the pre-Christmas period in Świętojańska Street, firstly, there is no seasonal sacralization of the street space, and secondly, that traditional Christmas decorations are moderately exposed and some of them evoke mixed feelings among the authors of the study as to their aesthetic role.

Sustainable local development aims to improve economy while taking into account environmental protection. Within this context, the contribution of women to sustainable local development over the years is essential to be explored in order to highlight the importance of their offer. This research aims to investigate the role of women in environmental protection for sustainable local development in a Greek island, Rhodes. A semi-structured interview was designed as a data collection tool. It was a field research which was conducted in the villages of the island as well as in the city of Rhodes. The sample of the survey was composed of women over sixty-five (65) years of age. The results of the survey show that the participation of women was particularly important in the environmental protection of the island, as their daily habits and occupations were environmentally friendly. The yards of their houses were decorated with flowers and trees. In their gardens they planted vegetables that were cultivating without using fertilizers or pesticides. They also collected rain water and they generally spent water with great care and attention. They did not throw the excess food in the garbage, they were giving pets or domestic animals the leftover food, and they also made sure that garbage from housework was scarce. Therefore, their work, their everyday habits and their way of life did not burden the environment, so they made a decisive contribution to the sustainable development of the island. Riad and dar ‘house’ are frequently confused, but with the following elements, we can tell the difference. Riads are likewise larger and more spacious than dars, although not to the level “ground floor + first floor”, as they are designed for almost four generations of the same family under one roof. Riads feature an exterior façade comprising a blind wall to 8 meters high, completely neutral, with nearly no windows. These Riads were erected to prevent indiscreet eyes from seeing inside. In the middle of the Riad, there is a fountain, richly decorated in zellige ‘tiles’ and carved plaster, surrounded by four separate gardens, containing lemon, fig, mint trees…, giving off a subtle fragrance for the locals. In Morocco, Riads are very common in the old ‘Médinas’. These houses benefit from a very rich history made through its own architecture. They were initially houses of notables, keen to protect the privacy of their families. Nowadays, Riads have been restored for a touristic objective as guest houses where the visitor encounters a comfy area, frozen in another time. Rabat, Meknes, Fez, and Marrakech are the cities that have been nominated for the World Heritage by UNESCO. This list is not complete, but these cities were chosen to expand the Riad phenomenon in the country. In this paper, we will discover the history of the Riads through their architecture giving some examples. Keywords: Riad, Architecture, Morocco, Médina, Tourist, Morocco

UDK: 634.2:574.4]:502(497.6 “Konjuh“) The area of the protected landscape "Konjuh" is distinguished by quality forest ecosystems, featuring diverse fruit-bearing forest species, which contributes to the conservation of biodiversity of the protected landscape "Konjuh". The aim of the paper is to assess the state of biodiversity of fruit-bearing species in the forest ecosystems of the study area, with the emphasis on determining the genus richness as a basis for conservation (in/ex situ), breeding and economic use. During the vegetation season in 2015 and 2016, several relevés (phytosociological plot) were made in the Protected Landscape "Konjuh". The results of the research indicate the high level of variability for most of the species according to characteristics of biology, pomology, and ecology. The fruit trees, like the noble hardwood, are wild cherry, (Prunus avium L.), wild pear (Pyrus communis L.), wild apples (Malus sylvestris Mill.), Breccia (Torminalis clusii M. Roem.), Sorbus aria L. et all, Wild cherry, Vrapcarka (Prunus avium L.) is the most famous forest fruit grower, occurs as a single tree or in smaller groups (Noćajević, 2009). The benefits of fruit-bearing forest species are emphasized in the bloom and the fruiting time, when "decorated" forest provide a rich bee pasture and feeding nutriment for forest fauna (Orešković et al. 2006). Fruit-bearing Forest species are significant as the genera of the varieties and as a basis for the grafting for high-grade varieties. Also, they are important for humans from the aspect of ecology, nutrition, dietotherapy, pharmacology and bioenergy balance.

The Lemko Region (Lemkivshchyna) is a region with many sights of sacred art, among which crosses hold a special place. The crosses testify to the belonging of the Lemko-Rusins to the church of the Eastern rite, which is very important, since it helped the Lemko-Rusins maintain their rite, customs, language and culture in a foreign confessional and foreign-language environment. Today, there are many tourist routes through the territory of Lemkivshchyna, and many of wooden and stone crosses need examination and restoration. After the division of the church, the Lemko-Rusins became part of the Eastern Rite. It was the Logos, the preaching of the Eastern Rite Cross, that played an important role in the historical preservation of Rusins from assimilation. Hand-made crosses were of a great importance for that. Carved hand-made crosses continued the medieval Eastern Church tradition of indoor sculpture of metal, stone, trees, bones, and ceramics. Typical handmade wooden crosses of the Eastern Rite church are septangular, sometimes octagonal, with a long jumper. They are decorated with images influenced by Byzantine iconography, as well as inscriptions in Cyrillic. A separate group consists of Lemko stone crosses. They are special, since they belong to the Eastern Rite and reflect the history and culture of Rusins. The Lemko-Rusins crosses are a separate understudied layer of history and world sacred culture. In the long run, it is worth studying the history and value of the cross in the history and church life of other ethno-cultural groups of Rusins: Hutsuls, Boykos, Podolyans, etc.

The article concerns the formation of the manor complex of Akhtyrka in the context of the development of Russian estate culture of the early XIX century. Based on textual and graphic materials, the author makes an attempt to clarify the features of the planning structure and the figurative and artistic originality of the estate, formed in the 1820s. The new manor complex was located on the picturesque steep slope of the left bank of the river Vorya, that was specially blocked to create very vast ponds, effectively edged with landscape and regular parts of the park. All elements of manor buildings corresponded to the style of late Moscow classicism, in particular, the architectural work of D. Gilardi. The central elevated part of the palace was crowned with a dome, and its garden façade was accented by a semi-secular terrace located in the center. Its northern facade was accented by a six-columned portico with a pediment decorated with the stucco coat of arms of the Princes Trubetskoy. On the north side, an extensive front yard was approaching the building, which in plan was close to the shape of a square. In its central part there was a pool with a fountain, around which roses and many other no less bright colors grew along symmetrically laid paths. The formation of the park fully met the general planning plan developed by one of the outstanding masters of landscape gardening art. On the lithographs dated 1st half of the XIX century by an unknown artist called “View of the village of Akhtyrki, owned by Prince Ivan Nikolaevich Trubetskoy. From Moscow - 60, and from Khotkovo in 3 versts ” this newly created complex is represented by picturesque ponds. Here we find their asymmetric shores, elegantly drawn, the bridge, the vast landscape park, the alleys and the very long volume of the main manor house, which rises spectacularly over the entire surrounding area. In front of the southern facade of the main house, a vast meadow was built on the relief smoothly lowering to the ponds. Near the building itself, birch trees flanked it, and from the east and west there were straight avenues planted only with lindens. At the coastline, we notice asymmetrically planted cypress trees together with shrubs. In 1924, the manor house burned down, which entailed the complete liquidation of the estate complex.

Community centres have been institutions acting like driving forces in the cultural life of villages. They were based on direct collaboration with intellectuals in each village: the priest, the teacher, the notary, the doctor. The cultural life of community centres was diverse and included various fields of activity aiming at multiple aspects in the life of each community. Generally, such activities were oriented towards solving economic issues, without limitation to them. It should be mentioned here the concern for public health, the control of epidemics, the rearing and education of children, the moral and intellectual development thereof. The community centre organizes various cultural activities where explanations are given to community, including people of all ages, about our historic past, thepresent time finding of paths and the future time for whose wellbeing they should a harmonious development. Starting from such points of interest, this work covers aspects of the community cultural life at Grăjdana, where the community centre established in 1934 played a major role in the development thereof, due to its achievements marking the period 1934-1940. A particularly significant contribution in the cultural becoming and development of the Grăjdana community was brought by the parish priest together with the village intellectuals. Thanks to their love for the people, they managed to invigorate the community in a short time by involving the villagers in various activities of spiritual, scientific, moral, artistic and recreational nature. According to the minutes executed on 3 July 1934, the initiative of creating a community centre was wholeheartedly approved, with the knowledge that it would be useful for the community. The following took part in the creation of the Grăjdana community centre: the priest Constantin Bunea, the teachers Ion Marinescu, Caliopia M. Rădulescu, Elisabeta Bunea and the notary Mihail Rădulescu. In addition to the creation of the centre, the people found out that the centre library was enhanced with all the parish library brochures and magazines that were made available, with new subscriptions for magazines, and that a people pharmacy was established. In time, the people would attend the meetings by categories of age and measures would be continuously taken so as to fulfil the articles of the Rules for the Functioning of Community Centres. In addition to the promotion of culture, the manager of “Regele Carol II“ Community Centre of Grăjdana together with active members bore in mind charitytoo, raising funds for building a monument dedicated to the heroes killed in the Great War, for helping orphans and the injured, for maintaining school canteens, for helping the locals get trained in the agricultural field. The good functioning of the Grăjdana Community Centre was successful also due to the collaboration with “Principele Carol“ Cultural Royal Foundation which approved and upheld the proposals submitted by the centre management, providing books, magazines, medicines, awards in cash and in kind, diplomas and decorations to encourage and select the cultural work. In addition to the local management continuous work and capacity, the envisaged goals were achieved also due to the kindness of distinguished persons, most of whom the Centre declared Honorary Members. One of them was Colonel I. Săndulescu, who made a number of donations, such as 8 plows and plowshares needed by the community. On the celebration of the Heroes’ Day, Regele Carol II Community Centre of Grăjdana conducted a number of activities with the participation of: widows, orphans, the war disabled, the Decorați (The War Decorated) and Foști Luptători (Former Fighters) associations, members of the centre council, commune authorities, schools led by teachers, premilitaries and villagers. The Grăjdana Church performed the Divine Liturgy praying in memorial of heroes. At the Heroes’ Monument blessings were delivered by the representatives of: the church, the mayor’s office, the forest range, war disabled and others. For its fruitful activity, in addition to the thanks received from various institutions such as the Ministry for Endowment of the Army, the Red Cross Society, Principele Carol Cultural Royal Foundation, the community centre of Grăjdana was awarded a prize in 1940 and called Model Community Centre together with other 50 community centres from throughout Greater Romania. The Centre managers were also rewarded with the Centenarul Regelui Carol I (Charles I Centenary) medal. In 1940, the Community Centre of Grăjdana achieved the following: fundraising for raising two school buildings, for opening three school canteens for the disadvantaged pupils, a people pharmacy store providing medicines to people at cost prices. At the Centre consulting room 261 vaccines were delivered against tuberculosis for children, as well as medical consultations free of charge. Poor families were helped with food supplies. The library was endowed with new books and magazines, a nursery of fruit trees, locust trees and grafted fruit trees and selected seeds was created. The Centre made donations to the army amounting to Lei 1882 and delivered courses on hygiene, religion, morality, household. Under the Community Centre patronage the following developed: Hora tinerilor (The Youth Round-Dance), Foștii luptători (Former Fighters) Association, Asociația Decoraților de războiu (The Association of the War Decorated), Post-Militari (Post-Militaries) Association, Crucea Roșie (Red Cross) Society. Although no solid material basis was available in the beginning, as the community was quite poor, the means that were employed allowed the development of love and respect for the historic past, keeping authenticity and the perpetuation of traditions.

Groundwater is one of the most important sources of fresh water all over the world, especially in those countries where rainfall is erratic, such as Vietnam. Nowadays, machine learning (ML) models are being used for the assessment of groundwater potential of the region. Credal decision trees (CDT) is one of the ML models which has been used in such studies. In the present study, the performance of the CDT has been improved using various ensemble frameworks such as Bagging, Dagging, Decorate, Multiboost, and Random SubSpace. Based on these methods, five hybrid models, namely BCDT, Dagging-CDT, Decorate-CDT, MBCDT, and RSSCDT, were developed and applied for groundwater potential mapping of DakLak province of Vietnam. Data of 227 groundwater wells of the study area were utilized for the construction and validation of the models. Twelve groundwater potential conditioning factors, namely rainfall, slope, elevation, river density, Sediment Transport Index (STI), curvature, flow direction, aspect, soil, land use, Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), and geology, were considered for the model studies. Various statistical measures, including area under receiver operating characteristic (AUC) curve, were applied to validate and compare the performance of the models. The results show that performance of the hybrid CDT ensemble models MBCDT (AUC = 0.770), BCDT (AUC = 0.731), Dagging-CDT (AUC = 0.763), Decorate-CDT (AUC = 0.750), and RSSCDT (AUC = 0.766) improved significantly in comparison to the single CDT (AUC = 0.722) model. Therefore, these developed hybrid models can be applied for better ground water potential mapping and groundwater resources management of the study area as well as other regions of the world.

The study of the semantics of images on archaeological artifacts is a matter of great interest, because the content of ornamental compositions, ideograms, symbolic signs can be interpreted in the context of the sphere of contemporary religious doctrines. This also applies to the ornamentation of ceramic ware found in burials. During the research of bi-ritual cemetery of Ulvivets-Rovantsi cultural group in Rovantsi (Volhyn region), dated back to the second half of IX–VIII centuries B.C., cinerary vase-urn with the remains of cremation was found. The vessel is decorated by images of four «trees» that stand on a wavy line and have raised branches and round tops. One of them differs by presence of broken branches. Comparative analysis of archaeological materials with using of ethnographic and folklore sources and examples from mythology allows us to explain the semantics of these symbolic signs, which form a holistic ideogram with figurative and symbolic meaning. It is confirmed that such an ideogram, which also occurs in the burial vessels of Corded Ware culture, Komarivska, Bilozerska, Pomeranian and especially Vysotska and Lusatian cultures, can be considered a universal sign system aimed at the figurative expression of one of the oldest religious doctrines. Image of a tree on a funerary vessel can be associated with image of the «world tree (tree of life)», a universal mythological archetype, a symbolic embodiment of the idea of rebirth, although it can also be a «tree of death» or a «tree of the underworld». It is also noted that it is possible to anthropomorphically interpret the image of a tree as a symbol of souls of the dead who stand on the banks of the river – boundaries of the worlds or float by the «river of death» to the afterlife, as evidenced by the image of water (river) under the tree. It is claimed that the images on the cinerary urn from Rovantsi represent magical signs-symbols used by ancient people, applied to the burial vessels to ensure «transition» of the dead to the afterlife and subsequent revival, possibly an encoded story about dead whose remains were buried in this vessel. After all, at the base of such beliefs is the ancient cult of ancestors known in wide areas in many cultures, which belong to different historical periods and ethnic groups. Key words: Late Bronze Age, Rovantsi cemetery, cremation, funerary vessels, semantics of images, magical signs-symbols, cult of ancestors, idea of revival.

Exploring the work of Antonio Gaudi and his knowledge in descriptive geometry, which develops a spatial imagination, we notice the use of lines, shapes, volumetric geometric images in architectural creativity. In his early work, Antonio Gaudi designs buildings under the influence of the Moorish style, using geometric shapes and lines that emphasize Arabic motifs in the patterns. So in the house of Vissenty, made in the style of modernism, he applied the idea of a self-repeating element of a simple form toa more complex one. In a fragment of the gallery of the city park Guell, which is an example of the urban style, Gaudi used the transformation of one surface to another, while showing the smoothness of lines and the accuracy of surface construction and without violating their regularity.Combining various forms in one building or structure, Gaudi perfectly mastered the geometry of the curved lines of the second and third order in space. To achieve a similar effect of shaping, scientists tried in the 60s of the XX century by constructing curved lines and Bezier surfaces. Gaudi achieved a similar effect of shaping in a practical way.n his work, he used cylindrical, conical and spherical surfaces that smoothly passed one into another, as well as the surfaces of Catalan: a hyperbolic paraboloid, conoid, cylindroid. In creating volumetric interior plastic, the curved lines with a kinematic movement created bizarre shapes of the ceiling, smoothly turning into other geometric shapes of the walls. The staircasein one of the towers of the Sagrada Familia is a geometric image of a helicoid, where a complex geometric shape is taken as the generatrix, and the guides are two helises -cylindrical helical lines of different radii. In the geometric construction of a direct or inclined helicoid, it is necessary to have two guides and a movement step, which can be set mathematically. In any case, such a surface remains one of the most unique in nature because the helicoid is a minimal surface.Park Guell is located in Barcelona on the Carmel hill, an area of 17.2 hectares. It was built in the first half of the last century. The customer, who was Eusebi Güell. He huge park complex includes a territory with residential buildings and comfortable relaxation areas, amazing picturesque gardens, quaint shady alleys, multi-tiered terraces, colorful flower arrangements, winding grottoes and gazebos.Working on a park project, Gaudi was inspired by the beauties of the surrounding nature of the Carmel Upland and its picturesque landscapes. In the project, walking paths stretched across the entire park, the mountains were not specially cut from the terrain to emphasize the natural landscape of nature.Necessary for the construction of the elements of the park: poles and beams, were decorated under palm trees. Despite the fact that the height difference was 60 meters, the master skillfully beat the landscape with bizarre forms, emphasizing the desire of a person from simple to sublime. If you delve into history, you can see that the construction work is divided into three stages: the strengthening of hills and slopes with the arrangement of terraces for curved paths and the erection of walls; the construction of a colonnade, a market and mansions; building a bench in the shape of a snake. To date, all the facilities of the complex have been preserved in their original form. At the entrance to the park there are two houses resembling fabulous gingerbread houses, the walls of which arelined with ceramic fragments. The facade of eachhouse is decorated with a medallion with the inscription “Park Guell”. In Gaudi’s work, the “hundred columns” hall, which is inscribed in the landscape of the hill, is a terrace with 86 columns of 6 meters each. These columns support a ceiling with a bizarre shape of complex geometric surfaces of revolution. The plastic of the ceiling vault is made of modern concrete of the time, the decoration of which is made of ceramic in the form of a mosaic. In practical work, Antonio Gaudi took a self-repeating algorithm that developed in space in the form necessary for his design. Gaudi perfectly mastered the skills and knowledge of the discipline called Descriptive Geometry. Developing the spatial imagination, this discipline offers us all kinds of lines, geometric shapes and three-dimensional bodies, for the embodiment of the ideas of masters of architecture, one of which is Antonio Gaudi.

Neoscona theisi and Leucauge decorata are two orb-web weaving spiders that are generally found between the branches of the bushes, the shrubs and the trees. Ever since the artificial lightening of the streets became the norm in modern cities, it became a major component of urbanization which influences the overall biodiversity all around the world. This study concentrates mainly on the web-site selection based on the presence and the absence of the street light which may influence the prey abundance at that particular area. The spider species studied are found in higher abundance on the trees that are in the close proximity to the streetlights. The majority of the arthropod prey species are dipterans. Other arthropods prey belonging to Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Odonata are also found on the webs of these two spider species on the selected plant species in which they were studied.

Dades is a unique valley, defined by a long green oasis covering the extended banks of Dades river with variety of trees that embellish and decorate the oasis excluding palm trees. Palm trees are not cultivated there as the weather is quite cold especially in winter. Dades is a melting pot in which variety of high-quality touristic attractions mingled and blended together to create irresistible glamor that pulls its visitors to fell in love with the area. These touristic attractions create fairly considerable natural and cultural heritage. Accordingly, the natural environment is well diversified (gorges, high mountains, sources, etc.), whilst, the cultural heritage is well built upon significant authentic cultural legacy (kasbahs, folklore, festivals, the religious cults and buildings, handicrafts and gastronomy). Indeed, tourism is the dynamic sector in the area. Since it benefits from various assets taking in account the richness of the cultural and natural heritage of this region, including the attractiveness of the architectural heritage, the specificity of the folklore, the finesse of the gastronomy, crafts, historic sites, and the diversity of the natural landscapes. All these potentials that are, in fact, a valuable heritage, must be integrated into the development strategy of the touristic products of DadesValley to reinforce its originality and enhance its attractiveness. In short, this article is a sort of a presentation of these characteristics with much focus on the general aspect of tourism in Dades and the useful elements for the development of a touristic mountainous area.

Cardiac complications of diabetes require continuous monitoring since they may lead to increased morbidity or sudden death of patients. In order to monitor clinical complications of diabetes using wearable sensors, a small set of features have to be identified and effective algorithms for their processing need to be investigated. This article focuses on detecting and monitoring cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in diabetes patients. The authors investigate and compare the effectiveness of classifiers based on the following decision trees: ADTree, J48, NBTree, RandomTree, REPTree, and SimpleCart. The authors perform a thorough study comparing these decision trees as well as several decision tree ensembles created by applying the following ensemble methods: AdaBoost, Bagging, Dagging, Decorate, Grading, MultiBoost, Stacking, and two multi-level combinations of AdaBoost and MultiBoost with Bagging for the processing of data from diabetes patients for pervasive health monitoring of CAN. This paper concentrates on the particular task of applying decision tree ensembles for the detection and monitoring of cardiac autonomic neuropathy using these features. Experimental outcomes presented here show that the authors' application of the decision tree ensembles for the detection and monitoring of CAN in diabetes patients achieved better performance parameters compared with the results obtained previously in the literature.

Abstract Besides their ability to present antigenic peptides and stimulate antigen-specific T lymphocytes, MHC class II (MHCII) molecules have also been implicated in the regulation of ensuing T cell responses. However, the substance of MHCII regulation remains elusive to this day. Defining the variables of this phenomenon appears to be critical for developing rational therapeutic approaches. Using models in which MHCII regulation has been demonstrated, we have revisited the concept by evaluating the impact of MHCII-restricted CD4 regulatory T cells (Tregs) on T cell reactivity to either allogeneic or self-antigens. Studies performed in vitro and in vivo showed that graft host Tregs specific to donor MHCII peptides / host MHCII complexes promoted T cell tolerance of fully allogeneic grafts. These pMHCII complexes - hereafter called TLo - were also involved in Treg-mediated suppression and in initial host Treg activation by graft MHCII. Extending these observations to Treg biology of normal animals, we have also shown that substantial amounts of TLo complexes selectively decorate antigen-presenting cells (APC) from the thymic medulla and participate in the differentiation of suppressive, TLo-specific Treg cells. Together these results suggest that, under steady-state conditions, MHCII genes regulate T cell responses by 1) generating self-TLo complexes on thymic APC to direct thymic Treg development and 2) modulating peripheral T cell activation via TLo-specific Tregs.

The historical attire of women from the Lithuania Minor (Klaipėda Region) has a characteristic practical detail: a textile pocket tied at the waist, which functionally corresponds to the modern handbag or pocket. Such textile pockets are called delmonai (pl.) and are usually decorated with colorful ornaments. The purpose of this article is introducing the prototypes of the ornamental motifs in terms of intercultural comparison, employing the visual materials collected by the author and historically formed intercultural contacts. While introducing her hypothesis of possible long-term influences, the author presents décor samples from identical or related textile pockets (from the 17th century until the middle of the 20th century), discussing the possibilities of their finding way to the Lithuania Minor. Researching the change occurring in the décor motifs, the author employs comparative analysis of the traditional (from the beginning of the 19th century until 1930s) and modern (from the beginning of the 21st century) textile pockets, still used as part of the national costume of the Lithuania Minor. The origins of several decorative motifs, e.g. the wreath, the crowned musical instrument, and the flower bouquet, are analyzed in more detail. The vegetal ornaments predominate in the décor of the textile pockets from the Lithuania Minor, including blossoms, branches, bouquets, leafs, wreaths and stylized trees. Certain modes of representation have been appropriated by the folk art from professional art or textiles. The most important centers of high fashion emerging in France, Italy, and Germany, exercised certain impact on tendencies occurring in the folk handicraft. Examples of textile pockets worn by the nobility were widely promoted by the periodicals. The surviving samples of embroidery patterns indicate one of the possible sources for the textile pockets’ décor in the Lithuania Minor: namely, the printed sheets with ornamental patterns, used by the nobility and lower social classes alike. Another likely source would be functionally similar needlework by women from the neighboring countries, since textile pockets make part of the national costume there as well. Sea trade created favorable conditions for commercial and cultural interchange between neighbors. The motif of wreath, rather frequently used in the Lithuania Minor, and the occasional motif of the flower bouquet also occur on textile pockets from Pomerania (the border region between Poland and Germany). Ornamentation of the pockets from Bavaria (in Germany) is also rather close in character to the décor of the Lithuania Minor. Such congruities may be determined by several reasons. Firstly, the producers of these textile works could have had interconnections (after the onslaught of devastating plague in Europe, numerous people from Salzburg moved to the fertile but rather wasted out territories of the Lithuania Minor). Secondly, the producers could have used the same original pattern, e.g. the printed sheet. However, although the mutual influence in the needlework décor of the neighboring countries determined by their economic and cultural connections is obvious, the décor of the textile pockets from the Lithuania Minor stands out in terms of its peculiar features (particular colors, modes of décor, etc.).In terms of spreading the regional ethnic culture, the problem of preserving the regional character of the folk art acquires special significance. Although separate parts of the national costumes inevitably change as result of the technical innovations increasingly applied to their production, these costumes should still remain recognizable as a continuation of the folk attire characteristic to the particular region. The patterns of décor used while making the textile pockets nowadays follow to some extent the traditional motifs of floral compositions. Although individual authors tend to create their original compositions, the majority of the textile pockets produced as part of the national costume of the Lithuania Minor still are easily recognizable as belonging to this particular region. The ornamental motifs are not especially distanced from the original ones as well, with embroidered flower bouquets and wreaths still making the majority. However, the motifs of the bouquet placed in a bag and the crowned musical instrument have lost their popularity. Rather than just making part of the national costume of the Lithuania Minor, the textile pockets increasingly appear as part of the modern clothing characterizing its regional peculiarity.

Abstract Pot is a place or container made of clay, earthenware, cement, or plastic to plant trees or plants. In addition to a place to plant plants, pots also function to decorate the appearance of the house, both on the outside (outdoor) or in the room (indoor). So that the selection of the right pot model can make the yard or corner of the room look more comfortable, beautiful, and attractive. Some pot models that are already on the market have a circular or rectangular base with a monotonous pot shape. Thus, the researcher conducted on the pot modelling with the initial data of regular hexagon polygons as the base of the pot and the Quadratic Bezier curve as the basis for modelling pots with the help of Maple software. This research method uses applied research methods, namely the application of the Quadratic Bezier Curve in making pot models, several pot models were produced, namely a pot with two tiers and three tiers, where each level has several potted models with twisted and symmetrical types. So that the pot models obtained are more attractive and have artistic value.

<p><em>Segestes docoratus</em> (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is one of the pests that can damage coconut leaves and cause very heavy damage in the area of distribution, especially in abandoned fields in certain islands. In Indonesia, <em>S. docoratus</em> pest only found in the Morotai Islands, Morotai Island Regency, North Maluku Province. Detailed information on damage, the population of the pest and its natural enemies, as well as distribution are still limited. This research aims to study the damage of coconut trees, pest populations and the potential of natural enemies that can suppress pests development in the field. The study was conducted on farmers land in Darame Village, Pilowo, South Morotai District, Yao Village, Bido Village North Morotai District, Waringin Village (Small Loleba Island and Big Loleba Island), Posi Posi Rao Village (Rao Island), South West Morotai District, Regency Morotai Island, North Maluku. At each location was selected 10 trees sample, and then young frond, mature frond and old frond were taken. Plant damage, coconut production, pest and natural enemies population were observed from each sample. The results showed that the <em>S. decoratus</em> pest damages coconut leaves but does not damage female flowers or young fruits. These pest attacks are generally categorized as light and moderate, but in certain locations in the North Morotai District and the Village of Posi Posi Rao (Rao Island), South West Morotai District, there are plants with a heavy attack level. Nearly all locations visited had <em>S. decoratus</em> pest attacks, except on the islands of Small Loleba and Big Loleba. Based on the assessment of the damage to leaflets from each frond, the percentage of leaf damage is higher in older leaves than mature leaves and lowest in young leaves. The average damage to old leaves is 26.57% - 48.65%, mature leaves 10.15% - 36.97% and young leaves 8.69% - 14.88%. The nymph of <em>S. decoratus</em> preferred young leaves as its food compared to mature and old leaves. This was indicated by the highest nymph population on young leaves and the lowest on old leaves. On the other hand, the higher adult population was found on the old fronds than the mature fronds and lowest on young fronds. This preference might be due to different nutritional components needs between nymph and adult stages, and different nutrient profiles of coconut leaflet between young and old fronds, or the mandible strength. Mandible of the imago is typically more robust than that of the nymphs. Hence, <em>S. decoratus nymphs </em>preferred the soft young leaves, while imagos prefer old leaves. The <em>Stichoterma dallatorreanum</em> parasitoid was not found in the nymphs and adults of <em>S. decoratus</em> collected, but it was found in other Tettigoniidae which are not coconut pests. Other natural enemies found were a spider predator, <em>Oecophylla smaragdina</em>, black ants, predator birds, and entomopathogenic fungi.</p><p align="center"><strong>ABSTRAK</strong></p><p><em>Segestes d</em><em>e</em><em>coratus</em> (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) merupakan salah satu hama yang merusak daun kelapa dan dapat menyebabkan kerusakan yang sangat berat di daerah penyebarannya terutama pada kebun yang tidak terpelihara pada pulau-pulau tertentu. Di Indonesia, hama <em>S. </em><em>d</em><em>e</em><em>coratus</em><em> </em>hanya ditemukan di Kepulauan Morotai, Kabupaten Pulau Morotai, Provinsi Maluku Utara.

SARS-CoV-2 is the third known coronavirus (CoV) that has crossed the animal-human barrier in the last two decades. However, little structural information exists related to the close genetic species within the SARS-related coronaviruses. Here, we present three novel SARS-related CoV spike protein structures solved by single particle cryo-electron microscopy analysis derived from bat (bat SL-CoV WIV1) and civet (cCoV-SZ3, cCoV-007) hosts. We report complex glycan trees that decorate the glycoproteins and density for water molecules which facilitated modeling of the water molecule coordination networks within structurally important regions. We note structural conservation of the fatty acid binding pocket and presence of a linoleic acid molecule which are associated with stabilization of the receptor binding domains in the “down” conformation. Additionally, the N-terminal biliverdin binding pocket is occupied by a density in all the structures. Finally, we analyzed structural differences in a loop of the receptor binding motif between coronaviruses known to infect humans and the animal coronaviruses described in this study, which regulate binding to the human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 receptor. This study offers a structural framework to evaluate the close relatives of SARS-CoV-2, the ability to inform pandemic prevention, and aid in the development of pan-neutralizing treatments.

Corsica is an island covered in graffiti. These painted messages devastate/decorate the walls of cities, towns, schools and homes. They have also spread to natural sites that include rocks, trees and mountains. A number of curricular questions arise in regards to graffiti as literacy and in particular regarding the corsican endangered language: Is graffiti a performance of the aesthetics of vulnerability of a minority language? Could graffitied symbols represent a linguistic affirmation of Coriscan identity? And what could engaging with these graffiti bring to canadian curricular studies regarding minority languages? The following auto/ethno/graphy attemps to answer these curricular questions as it (de)constructs a bricolage of personal photographs taken of Corsican graffiti as well as my narrative as a Canadian doctoral candidate studying in Corsica. It begins by tracing the a/r/to- and auto/ethno- graphic research framework that shapes my research and analysis. Subsequently, this paper explores various methods of researching graffiti which include reading graffiti as praxis, marginalia and empowerment. I also discuss students’ possible roles in (re)reading graffiti as an opportunity to remix and as an opening for developing critical literacy skills. In order to share my ongoing reflexive process as a researcher, my personal narrative is included throughout the paper. I have chosen to relate this narrative in French – my mother tongue and one of two minoritized languages that are at the heart of my research. This paper therefore (re)mixes English, French and Corsican throughout with as little translation possible to engage readers in a plurilingual reading experience.

Abstract Metastasis is responsible for 90% of all cancer-related deaths, making it the most significant challenge in cancer treatment for clinicians worldwide. Metastasis is thought to occur in a stepwise process, in which local lymph nodes (LNs) are first colonized by tumour cells before proceeding to distal organs. However, the mechanism by which LN metastasis facilitates distal metastasis is poorly understood. LNs undergo environmental changes to accommodate tumour cell growth within, notably by shifting the environment towards immunosuppression to shut down anti-tumour immune cells. This immunosuppressive environment is critical for the establishment of LN metastases, as cytotoxic CD8 T cells will otherwise neutralize incoming circulating tumour cells. Neutrophils are among the first cells recruited to tumour-draining LNs to mediate the environmental shift, and yet their method of action has not been fully elucidated. They have recently been found to secrete NETs within LNs during cancer, which are pro-inflammatory web-like formations of DNA decorated with antimicrobial peptides. While NETs have been shown to exert pro-tumour effects in the tumour microenvironment and to facilitate metastasis as a whole, their role in LNs has never been explored. Using a NETs deficient mouse model (PAD4-/-), we report that NETs deposition within the tumour-draining LNs of mice upregulates the Treg population while simultaneously downregulating anti-tumour CD8 T cell proliferation and activation. Following these findings, we performed an in vitro suppression assay and found that NETs-educated Tregs hinder the expansion of CD8 T cells more than non-NETs-educated Tregs. Finally, through an induced metastasis mouse model, we have observed that tumour-draining LN resection as well as the absence of NETs protects against the development of distal metastasis, and decreases body-wide inflammation as seen by a lowered Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio in the circulation. Taken together, these findings highlight the role of NETs deposition in LNs as a key player in disease progression and bring forward a potential target for anti-metastatic drug development. The Franciscan Monastery of St Domnius at Kraj on the island of Pašman houses an incunable edition of Augustine’s The City of God (De Civitate Dei) which was printed in Venice by Nicolas Jenson in 1475. The incunable features beautiful Renaissance multi-coloured illuminations painted in tempera, sepia, ink and water colours while gold foils and gold dust were used on fol. 17 (the page number is not original but was subsequently added in pencil; this folio contains the beginning of Book 1) and a number of other folios. The illumination on fol. 17 consists of two phytomorphic initials, a decorative border and independent figural scenes while a number of other folios are decorated with phytomorphic initials of the littera notabilior type, the height of which corresponds to two lines, painted in red or blue. The top and left margin of the first page of Book 1 are filled with a decorative border terminating in trilobes on each end. The ornamental scheme of the border consists of a band made up of five thin lines which undulates in a spiral and thus forms circles. These are filled with flowers, leaves and berries painted in blue, green and cyclamen purple but also with gold stylized burdock flowers (Lat. Arctium lappa; some scholars call them gold dots, that is, bottoni dorati). The remaining fields are filled with bent scrolls. In the upper left corner of the frame is a goldfinch. The initial I, composed of phytomorphic motifs in blue, green and cyclamen purple and their shades, is painted against a gold background of the rectangular field situated at the beginning of the text column on the left-hand side. Inside the decorative border, placed at the height which corresponds to the centre of the initial, is a medallion with the bust of St Augustine depicted in the open sky with elongated white clouds and no other details. The illusion of the spatial depth was achieved through the use of tonal gradations: the shades of blue are darker at the top and lighter in the lower half of the sky. St Augustine is dressed in a white robe and a red cloak with a black hood. He is wearing a white mitre with a horizontal and perpendicular band highlighted with gold dust. The shadows and folds of his clothes were articulated with black and white lines. His right hand is pointing to the open book which was painted at the height of his chest. The fingers on his right hand are elongated and thin. St Augustine’s gold nimbus was painted as a full circle the left half of which was outlined in white and the right half in black. St Augustine is directing his gentle and sad gaze upwards. His head is slightly bent. His round and bony head is marked by the large round eyes with prominent sclera and dark circles underneath while the arched eyebrows are thinner at their ends. The nose is small and the mouth is turned downwards. The plasticity of the face and its complexion were articulated with white and pink shades. The trimmed dark beard is depicted with short lines in lighter and darker shades. The ornamental frame which fills the top margin corresponds to the one in the left margin but was decorated more modestly because the miniaturist placed the scroll bearing the printer’s name and the scroll identifying the text as belonging to Book 1 at the centre of the frame which left only the beginning and the end of the frame to be decorated. The scroll with the printer’s name is emphasized by a golden burdock flower at the top of the frame and a golden teasel flower (Lat. Dipsacus fullonum) at the bottom. The lower margin features two symmetrical angels, rendered in a somewhat imprecise drawing, who kneel on the ground painted in the shades of green and brown. The physiognomy of the angels is similar to that of St Augustine. Their round heads have small eyes and noses, shaded circles under the eyes and arched eyebrows. The mouths are depicted as thin lines with pronounced ends and are further accentuated by a dot beneath the lower lip. The plasticity of their faces was achieved through the tonal gradation of pink and white. The angels’ hair, ochre in colour and highlighted with gold dust, is thick and short and covers the tops of their heads like a helmet. The outspread wings were painted in dark and light shades of blue. Two wide red scrolls with white highlights emerge symmetrically from behind the angels at their waist height. Wavy tendrils and gold stylized teasel flowers extend from the red scroll. The angels hold a laurel wreath between them. The colour of the circular field inside the wreath is cyclamen purple. The wreath is formed by three rows of leaves which are bound by four regularly spaced ties. The leaves’ edges and tips were painted in light and dark shades of green. Inside the wreath is a Renaissance crest surrounded by thin white wiggly tendrils with sprouting leaves. The shield, in the shape of a horse’s head, is divided horizontally into the dark blue upper half and the red lower half. It features a gold lion with his mouth wide open who is facing right and holding a tree with his front paws. The tree’s pyramidal top is decorated with small dots indicating leaves and fruit. The shield’s right half is outlined in white and the left one in black. The second text column on the first page of Book 1 is decorated with the painted initial letter G. It consists of phytomorphic motifs in blue, red, yellow and cyclamen purple and their shades. Two small leaves are attached to the initial on its left-hand side. As is the case with the crest, the initial was additionally decorated with elegant white tendrils sprouting leaves and highlighted with gold dust. The background is also gold while the rectangular field around the initial is outlined in a thin black line. Two wavy tendrils and two gold stylized teasel flowers emerge from the corners of the frame on the left-hand side while a green leaf appears at the centre. Apart from these illuminations and initials on fol. 17, the incunable contains other initials, one for the beginning of each of the remaining twenty one book, and all of them consist of blue, green and cyclamen pink phytomorphic motifs painted against a gold background inside a black rectangular frame. The plasticity of these initials was achieved through tonal gradation and the use of yellow while thin white undulating tendrils with variations in width and highlights in gold dust enriched the decoration. Some sentences in the text were emphasized by numerous initials in red or blue of the littera notabilior type the height of which corresponds to two lines of the text. The illuminations of this incunable edition of the De Civitate Dei belong to north Italian or Venetian Renaissance painting and they demonstrate numerous significant similarities with the works of the well-known Venetian miniaturist whom the scholarly literature identified as Maestro del Plinio di Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (Maestro del Plinio di Pico or, more commonly, Maestro di Pico). The attribution of the illuminations in this incunable to Maestro di Pico, who may have been helped by his workshop and assistants especially during the painting of the decorative frame and initials, is based on the figure of St Augustine and the angels who support the crest. Their features display the same typology which characterizes the works of Maestro di Pico. Identical angels appear in the bottom margin of Brunetto Latini’s Il Tesoro (Gerardus de Lisa, Treviso, 1474; Cambridge, Mass., Harvard, Houghton Library, Inc. 6459, c. 7). The figure of St Augustine shows pronounced similarities with the figure of a Dominican monk, set inside the initial O of the littera historiata type, in Nicolaus de Auximo’s Supplementum (Franciscus Renner et Nicolaus de Frankofordia, Venice, 1474; Biblioteca Marciana, Inc. Ven. 494, c.2). Identical angels and putti can be found in the bottom margins of Strabo’s Geographica (Minneapolis, Univ. of Minnesotta Library, Ms. 1460/f St., c.1), and in two copies of Pliny’s Historia Naturalis (Venice, N. Jenson, 1472, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Vèlins 498 and Venice, N. Jenson, 1472, San Marino, CA, Huntington Library, n. 2289). A beautiful comparative example is the Biblia Latina (Franciscus Renner & Nicolaus de Frankfordia, 1475, Dallas, Texas, Southern Methodist University, Bridwell Library) and its first page which has a similar composition to that in the incunable from Kraj. The figure of St Jerome, depicted inside a littera historiata provides a plethora of specific Morellian details which are essential for the attribution of the illuminations in the incunable from Kraj to Maestro di Pico. Striking similarities in the depictions of saints, phytomorphic initials and decorative frames can also be found in two psalters (one in Venice, Biblioteca Querini Stampaglia, Inc. 6, the other in Siena, Biblioteca S. Bernardino del Convento dell’Osservanza) and in the first page of the Psalms in a breviary from Paris (Bibliothèque Ste-Geneviève, OE XV 147 Rés). Similar saints and angels all of which belong to the same figural typology were used to decorate three copies from the Commissioni series made for Doge Agostino Barbarigo (Commissione del doge Agostino Barbarigo a Girolamo Capello, 1487, Venice, Bib. Del Museo Correr, MS Cl. III. 33 (fig. 15); Commissione del doge Agostino Barbarigo a Paolo di Canale, 1489, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Lat. 4729, c.2, and Commissione del doge Agostino Barbarigo a Tommaso Loredano, 1490, Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Lat. 4730, c.1). Further parallels can be found in the illuminations of a breviary from Augsburg (c. 1480, Universitätsbibl., Cod. I.2.2o 35) the first page of which has a lettera istoriata with the figure of St Paul whose physiognomy closely resembles that of St Augustine in the incunabule from Kraj, while the bottom margin features centrally placed angels which are identical to those at Kraj. Equally important comparative material is found in three Paduan incunables (Biblioteca del Seminario Vescovile) which contain illuminations attributed to Maestro di Pico. The distinctive features of the angels, putti and saints as well as the type of decoration used in the margins of these incunables also demonstrate striking similarities with the illuminations from Kraj. Other examples include Lattanzi’s Opera (Giovanni da Colonia and Johannes Manthen, Venice, 1478; Forc. M. 3.2), Jacopo da Varagine’s Legenda aurea (Gabriele di Pietro, Venice, 1477, with a likely contribution of his workshop; Forc. M. 2.22) and Cipriano’s Opera (Vindelino da Spira, Venice, 1471; Forc. K. 2.12). On the basis of the comparative analyses outlined above and the similarities which have been noted, it can be concluded that the illuminations in the incunable of St Augustine’s De Civitate Dei (Nicolas Jenson, Venice, 1475), housed in the Monastery of St Domnius at Kraj, were painted by the well-known Venetian Renaissance miniaturist Maestro di Pico. Regardless of the possible input of his workshop and assistants during the painting process of the decorative frame and initials, these illuminations help expand the catalogue of Maestro di Pico’s works and represent valuable contribution to the painting in Renaissance Dalmatia.
