Conventional imaging techniques for cancer detection have difficulty finding small, deep tumors. Single-detector radiation probes have been developed to search for deep lesions in a patient who has been given a tumor-seeking radiopharmaceutical. These probes perform poorly, however, when the background activity in the patient varies greatly from site to site. We have developed a surgical dual-detector probe that solves the problem of background activity variation, by simultaneously monitoring counts from a region of interest and counts from adjacent normal tissue. A comparison of counts from the detectors can reveal the class of tissue, tumor or normal, in the region of interest. In this dissertation we apply methods from statistical decision theory and derive a suitable comparison of counts to help us decide whether a tumor is present in the region of interest. We use the Hotelling trace criterion with a few assumptions to find a linear discriminant function, which can be reduced to a normalized subtraction of the counts for large background count-rate variations. If area under the ROC curve is our figure of merit, the likelihood ratio is the optimum discriminant. We model likelihood functions of the data given the "tumor" and "no-tumor" hypotheses, and calculate the likelihood ratio. Using a spatial response map of the dual probe, a computer torso phantom, and estimates of activity distribution, we simulate a surgical staging procedure to test the dual probe and the discriminant functions. Results of the simulations show that the dual probe effectively solves the problem of background activity variations when used with any of the discriminant functions derived in this dissertation.

The energy industry is transforming from the old, vertically integrated model into a more competitive model in which most companies are exposed to different types of risk. One of the major challenges facing energy companies is making investment decision-making associated with the prices of crude oils. Since 1973, crude oil price behaviour has become more volatile, which suggested that different forces were driving crude oil prices. One of the main factors in generating the behaviour of crude oil prices is the role performed by OPEC and non-OPEC crude oil producers. Several theoretical and empirical analyses suggested that the economics behind OPEC’s supply of crude oil is different than those of non-OPEC supply. This study investigates whether prices of OPEC crude oils and prices of non-OPEC crude oils share a common data-generating process. The study empirically tests oil price volatility of OPEC and non-OPEC crude oil prices using GARCH models. It also applies the Johansen Cointegration Model and the Engle-Granger Error Correlation Model (ECM) model to test the long – and short-term relationship between crude prices (OPEC and non-OPEC) and stock prices of different oil companies. Finally, a panel data approach using fixed and random effects is used to estimate the reaction of OPEC and non-OPEC crude oil prices to events and news items that could possibly affect oil supply and prices. The results obtained suggest that the behaviour of crude oil prices is not affected by OPEC or non-OPEC affiliation. This finding suggests that the international oil market is globally integrated market that is able to factor in any possible changes to supply behaviour of OPEC or non-OPEC producers.

This work investigates the fundamental processes used by mammalian cells and organisms to make decisions during embryonic development. Current technologies that evaluate biological phenomenon often force a compromise between quantification of gene expression via bulk assays and qualitative imaging of cell and tissue heterogeneity. There are few options that allow for quantitative, high-resolution, single-cell analysis that is robust but not associated with a high degree of technical difficulty or obscured by amplification. Here, we address these issues using two model systems, the developing mammalian inner ear and single mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) during the process of X inactivation, to demonstrate our ability to perform single-cell, single-molecule assays that reveal both highly quantitative and spatial information. Accordingly, we adapted a high resolution, single-molecule RNA fluorescent in situ hybridization technique (smFISH) to study gene expression in the inner ear and perform allele-specific detection of the X chromosome in mESCs. We used previously-published smFISH procedures as our initial template for investigating biological signaling phenomena in these two systems. To study gene expression in the mouse inner ear, we developed a modified smFISH strategy to investigate mRNA transcript expression patterns in the cochlea during auditory hair cell development. The mammalian cochlea, a highly specialized and complex organ, beautifully demonstrates both the depth and breadth of the smFISH technique. To assay signaling behavior and topological changes of the X chromosome prior to X inactivation, we incorporated a novel allele-specific modification into the smFISH technique. We investigate the allele-specific expression patterns of eight genes that tile the X chromosome, which were chosen for their varied putative roles before, during and after X chromosome inactivation. Taken together, these two systems recapitulate the strength of the smFISH technique and its adaptations. The goals of this thesis were twofold: (1) expand the smFISH technique to work in specialized mammalian systems such as the cochlea and (2) demonstrate allele-specific DNA topological changes and expression patterns in mESCs. Elucidating high-resolution, single-molecule quantifiable imaging methods for application to complex tissues or allele-specific probing will have profound impacts on future investigations and promote a deeper comprehension of these systems.

UK and US grocery retailers operate with narrow profit margins; the shelf price of each product sold has a direct affect on these profits. Despite the importance of pricing, grocers adopt sub-optimal risk mitigation tactics rather than profit maximization. Part of a grocer’s perceived pricing risk is their lack of any understanding of customer product price expectation. The academic concept of Internal Reference Price (IRP) represents that price expectation but, despite a large body of research, IRP does not appear to be used in UK or US grocery pricing. This is due in part to academics’ lack of understanding of pricing practitioners’ actual needs and the context they work within, and has led to commercially inappropriate IRP model formulations. This exploratory study corrects this lack of understanding and provides both an integrated theory of pricing behaviour and its context, along with an applied IRP model that has the potential to improve UK and US grocer price decision-making. The models were developed using Classical Grounded Theory based on information from in-depth semi-structured interviews held with 20 UK and US grocery pricing practitioners. The research represents a significant contribution to both the academic and commercial body of knowledge. It does so, firstly, through the provision of an explanatory and predictive grounded theory of grocery pricing behaviour, and secondly through the development of an applied conceptual grounded model of IRP, both of which have been unseen to date.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Growing competition, fuelled by globalisation, has increased the number of alternatives across almost all product categories, leaving consumers overloaded with information and overwhelmed for choice. Brand and price represent two cues that have been found to influence consumer decision-making and which can be used in marketing strategies to create value, and differentiate from competitors in this increasingly competitive climate. Responding to the misconceptions surrounding the decision-making of individuals classified in the low-income market segment, and in light of the significance of Bottom of Pyramid (BOP) supported by Prahalad (2002), this study was undertaken to assess the perceived importance of price and brand in low-income consumers’ decision-making process, and thereby examine the effect of different prices and brands on low-income consumers’ product preference. Primary causal research using a choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis was conducted on a judgement sample of black female adults. A total of 209 questionnaires were completed through fieldwork of personal interviews in informal settlements in Gauteng. The study used a 5 price presentation (R18.99; R24.99; R28.99; R33.99; R42.99) by 5 brand presentation (Ace, Iwisa, White Star, Mnandi, Ritebrand) between-subjects design in the maize meal product category. The hierarchical Bayes procedure and multinomial logit model were used to analyse the primary data. Results of the descriptive and inferential analysis of the CBC showed that brand was perceived as more important, attributing to 65 per cent of low-income consumers’ decision-making process, opposed to the 35 per cent attributed to price, and that prices and brands had varying effects on low-income consumers’ purchase probabilities. Although lower prices did have higher perceived utilities, the price-sensitivity of low-income consumers was found to be less influential at lower price ranges, suggesting the stronger influence of brand and brand associations on their evaluation of alternatives. Familiar brands (White Star, Ace and Iwisa) were seen to positively influence low-income consumers’ purchase probability by reducing perceived risk, further enhanced by brand credibility as found with Iwisa (which indicated consistent quality) resulting in higher purchase probability. Unfamiliar brands (Mnandi and Ritebrand) were perceived as having low levels of utility, attributed to higher levels of perceived risk and unclear quality inferences. The research conclusions, drawing from secondary research, proposed a model of low-income consumer decision-making that is influenced by various factors, including aversion to loss, and the desire to satisfy aspirations. Varying levels of brand knowledge, brand quality and credibility as well as symbolic value attached to different brands as perceived by low-income consumers, are argued to influence both individuals’ aversion to loss, as well as their aspirational desires, and thus influence the decision-making process. Price and price–quality inferences, brand familiarity, brand–quality inferences, psychological factors and those surrounding the purchase context were found to have influence over the decision-making process of individuals within this market segment. Managerial recommendations emphasise the significance of the BOP as a viable market segment, warn marketers of low-cost pricing strategies, and discuss the importance of employing value-based strategies and leveraging brand to attract, satisfy and retain consumers in this market segment. Managers are challenged to find a balance between perceived quality and reliability and affordable price, in order to operate successfully in the low-income market and offer effective value propositions that provide customer satisfaction while allowing for sustained sales and profits for the firm.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Groeiende mededinging, gedryf deur globalisering, het die aantal alternatiewe in byna alle produkkategorieë laat toeneem, wat verbruikers oorlaai met inligting en oorweldig met keuses. Handelsmerk en prys verteenwoordig twee leiseine wat verbruikersbesluitneming beïnvloed en wat gebruik kan word in bemarkingstrategieë om waarde te skep, en 'n produk van sy mededingers te onderskei in hierdie toenemend mededingende klimaat. In reaksie op die wanopvattings omtrent die besluitneming van individue wat in die lae-inkomste-marksegment geklassifiseer word, en in die lig van die betekenisvolheid van die Bodem van die Piramide (BOP) soos ondersteun deur Pralahad (2002), is hierdie studie onderneem om die waargenome belangrikheid van prys en handelsmerk in lae-inkomste-verbruikers se besluitnemingsproses te assesseer, en sodoende die effek van verskillende pryse en handelsmerke op lae-inkomste-verbruikers se produkvoorkeure te ondersoek. Hierdie verskynsel is verder versterk deur handelsmerkgeloofwaardigheid, soos gesien by Iwisa (wat konsekwente gehalte aangedui het), wat lei tot hoër aankoopwaarskynlikheid. Onbekende handelsmerke (Mnandi en Ritebrand) is waargeneem as laag in terme van bruikbaarheidsvlakke, wat toegeskryf kan word aan hoër vlakke van waargenome risiko en onduidelike afleidings omtrent gehalte. Forecasting, cost management and pricing policies are topics which have beenwidely investigated over time. Due to a lack of scientific research about therelationships between each of those subjects, these methods have beeninvestigated in combination with their outcomes. The purpose of this work was todevelop a framework which can be used by managers who want to make adecision in either of the subjects mentioned before. By the use of a qualitative, interpretive research design, a literature review was performed which led to some interesting findings. Generally, it can be said that the methods are not related directly, although the outcomes are linked and can often be used as a criterion for the decision making process for the other methods.

The diploma thesis deals with the crucial aspect of manager's and leader's role in both public and private organizations -- decision making. It explains the different phases of the decision making process, and then challenges the classical concept based on the theory of rational choice with the results of many experiments outlining a slightly different picture of reality. It seems thought, that human decisions are not fully rational indeed. Despite the availability of advanced methods and tools, many of us instinctively rely on a variety of mental shortcuts and simplifications. Even worse, because they are rooted very deep into our minds and are rather non conscious, we tend to make the same mistakes again and again. To explore and to be fully aware of the danger of this psychological traps threatening the different phases of the decision making process, is the first important step on the way to weaken their influence. Tips and hints illustrated with many experiments and real-life examples from business in this thesis should help us to improve the quality of our decisions and achieve better results.

The use of goal programming in various real-world areas - including resource allocation, engineering, agriculture and other applications - has increased a lot in the past few years. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate goal programming approaches in determining prices. Various aspects of price determination - such as cosls, existing prices, competitors' prices, volume change due to price change and other aspects are incorporated in the model in order to suggest reasonable and realistic prices. Taking just these factors into account will not completely solve the problem, as there are usually certain goals that the decision maker would like to achieve. For example, the decision maker would probably like to attain an acceptable pre-specified minimum profit level without adjusting current prices too much whilst keeping prices competitive to insure that customers are not lost in the process of change. In this study, a goal programming model is developed for the determining of products' prices with consideration of these goals. The model makes provision for the change in demand due to the change in prices.

The most important factor that affects the decision making process in finance is the risk which is usually measured by variance (total risk) or systematic risk (beta). Since investors' sentiment (whether she is an optimist or pessimist) plays a very important role in the choice of beta measure, any decision made for the same asset within the same time horizon will be different for different individuals. In other words, there will neither be homogeneity of beliefs nor the rational expectation prevalent in the market due to behavioral traits. This dissertation consists of three essays. In the first essay, Investor Sentiment and Intrinsic Stock Prices, a new technical trading strategy is developed using a firm specific individual sentiment measure. This behavioral based trading strategy forecasts a range within which a stock price moves in a particular period and can be used for stock trading. Results show that sample firms trade within a range and show signals as to when to buy or sell. The second essay, Managerial Sentiment and the Value of the Firm, examines the effect of managerial sentiment on the project selection process using net present value criterion and also effect of managerial sentiment on the value of firm. Findings show that high sentiment and low sentiment managers obtain different values for the same firm before and after the acceptance of a project. The last essay, Investor Sentiment and Optimal Portfolio Selection, analyzes how the investor sentiment affects the nature and composition of the optimal portfolio as well as the performance measures. Results suggest that the choice of the investor sentiment completely changes the portfolio composition, i.e., the high sentiment investor will have a completely different choice of assets in the portfolio in comparison with the low sentiment investor. The results indicate the practical application of behavioral model based technical indicators for stock trading. Additional insights developed include the valuation of firms with a behavioral component and the importance of distinguishing portfolio performance based on sentiment factors.

Анотація:
The aim of this master thesis is to find out whether celebrity endorsement is influencing factor on decision-making process when purchasing cosmetics (hair care and skin care) in Czech market. Master thesis is divided into two main parts. Theoretical part describes consumer decision-making process, role of celebrity endorsement and examples how celebrity endorsement is used nowadays by L'Oréal. Practical part then focuses on analysis of consumer behaviour through quantitative (online questionnaire) and qualitative research (focus groups) in order to analyse what consumer thinks about celebrity endorsement and to which extent is Czech beauty shopper influenced by it. Thanks to these analyses I was able to identify the most influencing factors, position celebrity endorsement within this group and create set of recommendations regarding most important tools when promoting skin care and hair care products on Czech market.

In field experiments with subjects living either inside or outside Brazilian slums (n=955), we show that consumers living in slums are less price sensitive, in opposition with recent price sensitivity research. Comparing slum and non-slum dwellers, we found that negatively stereotyped consumers (e.g. slum dwellers) were more likely to pay higher amounts for friendlier customer service when facing social identity threats (SITs) in marketplaces such as banks. The mechanism which makes them less price sensitive is related to the perception of how other people evaluate their social groups, and we argue that they pay more because they are seeking identity-safe commercial relationships. This work, besides extending the literature in SITs, presents a perspective for the exchange between economics and psychology on price sensitivity, showing that consumers living in slums are willing to pay more to avoid possibly social identity threating experiences.

This diploma thesis is focused on examining the activities of production planning and examining the efficiency of the selected machine in the selected company. The theoretical part summarizes the most important findings and methods of lean manufacturing and corrective measures to prevent or eliminate downtime. In the analytical part, the selected machine is examined in terms of the production process, then an analysis of the current state and assessment of the collected data is performed. Furthermore, an analysis of the decision-making process in production planning for a selected machine was performed and shortcomings in planning were assessed. The practical part contains suggestions for removing the identified bottlenecks.

The aim of this thesis is by using methods and practices of managerial decision-making process to choose suitable supplier and propose measures to reduce risk. The first section of the theoretical part deals with the different phases of the decision-making process. The second part is devoted to the procurement as one of the corporate functions. The practical part applies the managerial decision-making process on the current situation of a company producing fast moving consumer goods is looking for a new supplier of packaging material. Choice of supplier was performed by using a multi-criteria decision-making, first the decision criteria was defined, followed by a description of the alternatives and their consequences. Evaluation of the alternatives was based on the additive multi-criteria utility function, to determine the weights of the criteria was used method determining weights by preferential arrangements. From five potential vendors was recommended supplier A. The end of the practical part is devoted to proposals of measures to reduce the risk which company may face in the process of selection and also in the process of delivering of the material.

This study will examine the importance of Country-of-Origin, Price, Quality and Expiration date, in the consumer decision making process for fresh meat. Country-of-Origin has earlier been investigated, however the research has been focusing on manipulating one single cue. With the recent scandals in the fresh meat industry, were animals being abused and expiration dates being changed, it is interesting to investigate how important the consumers find the four attributes; Country-of-Origin, price, quality and expiration date.In order to answer the research questions, and fulfil the purpose, the authors will use a mix of different data collection methods. Qualitative data will be gathered by performing interviews and quantitative data will be gathered by conducting a pilot study and an experiment. The data will be retrieved with the use of SPSS 17.0 and the conjoint analysis procedure. Country-of-origin has been found to be the most preferred attribute for consumers in their purchasing process for fresh meat, closely followed by expiration date. The consumer did find price and quality to be of importance, however the attributes were not found to be as important as Country-of-Origin and expiration date. As Country-of-Origin was found to be the most significant attribute for consumers in their decision making process, this indicates that the consumers are ethnocentric in their behaviour, i.e. they consider their own country and culture to be above others, which leads to a purchase of Swedish meat. It has also been found that the purchasing process of fresh meat is of great complexity, especially with the negative attention the fresh meat industry has induced.

The thesis deals with the decision-making of the expert in real estate valuation. Due to the complexity of the process and the difficulties of valuation it can be assumed that the decision will be an arduous process. It is obvious that the choice of an expert is crucial to the result of the valuation process. This topic is currently relatively little explored, and therefore the work will deal with the analysis and formulation of decision problems expert in real estate valuation. The thesis analyses the current status of forensic engineering and decision-making regarding to real estate valuation. The general decision-making process, divided into seven steps, is adapted to the requirements of expert decision-making in real estate valuation. As in the managerial decision-making process, property valuation is also divided into three levels. These three levels considered the described fundamental decision problems that lead to the formulation of the expert decision-making principles in real estate valuation. For better understanding the extensiveness of the decision-making process in the valuation of real estate the author created a decision tree respectively schemes whose functionality has been verified at the end of the thesis, exemplified with the help of a specific case study of the determined price in real estate valuation.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to select a suitable task management tool with regards to specific requirements of BNM, s.r.o. company. The list of requirements was compiled based on author's work experience at the particular company. Last but not least the thesis is focused on a solution of identified issues while the theoretical part explains the teamwork theory and team collaboration. Further chapters introduce SaaS oriented software distribution models. The final tool selection is done using a scoring method and WSA (Weighted Sum Product) method belonging to the multi-criteria decision methods category. The decision making proces is further described with a special attention to the selected tool - Asana. None of the considered tools was excluded due to a non-fulfilment of the selection criteria. The main contribution of the thesis is a comparison and evaluation of available task management tools and a selection of a best tool for the one particular company.

In the theoretical part, the focus is on the enterprise and aspects that significantly affect its functioning and decision-making and also have influence on the subject of this work. In the following part, terms and concepts from the field of business informatics are described. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the consumer's purchase decision-making process at the market of the summer vacations and capture current trends of buying summer vacation in the Czech market. The first two chapters are devoted to basic definitions and approaches, serving to understanding consumer behaviour, description of the marketing mix of tourism and the factors affecting the buying decision of the individual. Next part of the thesis examines different phases of the purchase decision-making process by using secondary data. The fourth chapter briefly describes the tourism market in the Czech Republic, its entities and services overview of tourism. The final part is devoted to the analysis of a questionnaire survey carried out by me and the acquired results. My own research is supported by data from Market -- Media -- Lifestyle (MML). The end of the work is composed of the result summary and conclusion of the investigation and it shows clear process of buying summer vacation on the basis of available data.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the investigation was to supply decision-makers within the explosives industry with a study, outlining all aspects important for the successful completion of a capital project. It also aimed to supply a model to support them in decision-making regarding new capital expansions and to sensitise them to what is necessary for the successful completion of a capital project. This model was developed with the aid of the following equation: Target return = Cost + Desired percentage return x Capital invested In the process of developing the model, it became clear that financial criteria could not be looked at in isolation. The conclusion was reached that, in an attempt to successfully complete a capital project, it becomes important to investigate the whole process, from budgeting to project completion. The capital project at issue takes place against the background of the explosives business in South Africa. It follows that the investigation started off with a study as to where explosives originated from, as this played an important role in the later development of mining techniques and the resulting change in how mine management approached the delivery of service through explosives companies. From the investigation it became clear that large mines, in an increasing way, opt for "one-contract suppliers". It is expected from these suppliers to manage all aspects pertaining to drilling, blasting and the hauling of ore. The study also indicated that there is an oversupply of ammonia, an important ingredient in the manufacturing of explosives, in South Africa. The combined conclusion was that margins in the explosives industry in South Africa were put under pressure. This conclusion underlines the importance of proper capital project management. It was also found that the level of customer service largely contributes towards the determination of the layout, size and quantity of remote sites. It follows that this is also a large cost driver. This cost as well as the costs of erection, purchase of explosives trucks and the "operability enablement" of such a remote site are important in the sense that they form a part of the determination of the initial capital outlay as well as the future cash flow for the calculation of the net present value and the internal rate of return on the project. A large portion of the operations cost is represented by the transportation of raw materials from the manufacturing plants to the different remote sites. This action, in the Sasol Explosives environment, is the only link in the logistics system that has been outsourced. The investigation into the outsourcing showed that there was no clear reason why this function was outsourced and, likewise, no apparent reason why it cannot be "insourced" again. A recommendation has been made that a full-scale investigation into the possible insourcing of the transport function be launched. In the process of establishing the future cash flow, an investigation was launched into the income generated by the project. It was found that the investigation into income could be divided into two parts: the first, the required return, is coupled to risk; and the second is the actual sale of products. Sales volume (tonnage) and the accompanying price per ton "combine" to form sales income. Finally, price per ton, in turn, is used to "balance" the equation that has been investigated. This price is used as the figure quoted to potential customers. This equation, as well as the sum total of the investigation, was used as the basis for the development of a model or Excel spreadsheet.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die ondersoek was om 'n studie aan besluitnemers binne die springstofbedryf daar te stel wat alle aspekte belangrik vir die suksesvolle voltooiing van 'n kapitaal projek bespreek. Die doel was verder om 'n model ter ondersteuning van nuwe kapitaal-uitbreidings besluitneming daar te stel en besluitnemers ook te sensiteer ten opsigte van wat nodig is om 'n kapitaalprojek suksesvol af te handel. Hierdie model is ontwikkel aan die hand van die volgende vergelyking: Doelopbrengs = Koste + Verlangde persentasie opbrengs x Kapitaal belegging. In die proses om die model te ontwikkel het dit duidelik geword dat daar nie in isolasie na finansiele kriteria gekyk kon word nie. Daar is tot die slotsom gekom dat, in 'n poging om 'n kapitaalprojek suksesvol af te handel, dit nodig was om die hele proses, vanaf begroting tot projek-afhandeling, te ondersoek. Die genoemde kapitaalprojek vind plaas teen die agtergrond van die springstofbedryf in Suid-Afrika. Die ondersoek het derhalwe 'n aanvang geneem met 'n volledige ondersoek na waar springstof vandaan gekom het, aangesien dit 'n belangrike rol gespeel het in die latere ontwikkeling van mynboutegnieke en die gevolglike verandering in hoe mynbestuur dienslewering deur springstofmaatskappye benader. Uit die ondersoek het dit gevolg dat groot mynmaatskappye hulle al meer wend tot "een-kontrak-verskaffers". Daar word van hierdie verskaffers verwag om alle aksies rakende boorwerk, skietwerk en die vervoer van grondstowwe te bestuur. Die ondersoek het ook daarop gewys dat daar 'n oor-aanbod van ammoniak, 'n belangrike onderdeel in die vervaardiging van springstowwe, in Suid-Afrika bestaan. Die gesamentlike gevolg was dat marges in die springstofbedryf in Suid-Afrika onder druk is. Hierdie gevolg het die feit onderstreep dat baie noukeurig na kapitaal projekte gekyk moet word. Daar is bevind dat die vlak van klientediens grootliks die uitleg, grootte en aantal verafgelee aanlegte bepaal. Gevolglik is dit ook 'n baie groot kostedrywer. Hierdie genoemde koste, asook die kostes van die oprigting, aankoop van springstoftrokke en die "bedryfbaar-maak" van so 'n verafgelee aanleg, is belangrik in die sin dat dit deel uitmaak van die nodige vasstelling van die toekomstige aanvanklike kapitaaluitleg, asook die kontantvloei vir die berekening van die huidige nettowaarde en interne opbrengskoers van die beplande projek. Hierdie prys word gebruik as die syfer wat gekwoteer word aan potensiele kliente. Hierdie vergelyking, asook die som totaal van die ondersoek, is gebruik as basis vir die daarstelling van 'n model of Excel-sigblad.

Common critique of the Austrian business cycle theory states that the Austrian cycle could not be initiated under the rational expectations hypothesis. This thesis therefore investigates the role of price expectations of entrepreneurs in the Austrian cycle theory. We conclude that this theory might be compatible with rational expectations only under several assumptions. The rational expectations hypothesis is, however, evaluated rather critically concluding it is quite strong and unrealistic assumption. Various regimes of monetary policy are discusses in the context of price expectations.

This diploma thesis deals with the evaluation of supplier risk for a chosen company Vinařství Soška using the fuzzy logic principles. This company like many others is forced to shift its sales to the Internet environment due to the government restrictions established to reflect the pandemic situation. For a successful Internet business, it is necessary to choose an optimal ecommerce software based on the company requirements. For this purpose, two fuzzy logic models are built in Microsoft Excel and MATLAB software. Their aim is to evaluate the potential risk of all of the suppliers. Based on this evaluation, the results are transformed into specific recommendations on how to choose the optimal solution for the company. The first chapters deal with the general theory that is later used in the analytical part.

he business climate is undergoing a transformation and managers are faced with several challenges, notthe least of which is related to pricing strategy. With an increased transparency in the market as well as anincreased competitive pressure, and with more sophisticated and well-informed consumers, retailbusinesses find it hard to navigate the pricing jungle. At the same time, the conventional wisdom in thefield of pricing and the theoretical models on the topic, originate from a time long before thedigitalization. Old models are not a problem in itself, but when there are new forces in the pricingecosystem, driven by technological advancement, an assessment of the incumbent models is in the bestinterest of both businesses and academia. The reason for this is that, the use of old models that rely oninaccurate assumptions may impact businesses’ prioritizing of resources or their overall business strategy.In addition, researchers might be distracted and the research field disrupted. Thus, the purpose of thisstudy is to discuss whether or not there are additional dimensions in pricing strategy that are not coveredby the incumbent pricing models. Here, dimensions refer to the key components of businesses’ strategicdecision making in regards to pricing.This thesis examines pricing models in today’s business context in order to answer the research question:“Are there additional dimensions of the empirical reality of pricing strategy that are not covered by theincumbent pricing models?” The research question has been studied qualitatively through a literaturereview, a pilot study and twelve case studies, where the pilot study had the purpose of exploring thedepth, whereas the multiple case studies focused on the breadth, of pricing strategies. The case studiescover businesses in different retail industries and of different sizes, namely the industries of Clothing &Accessories, Daily Goods, Furniture and Toys & Tools, and of the following sizes: micro, small, mediumand large. The empirical data has mainly been gathered by conducting interviews with production, salesand management personnel at the case businesses. The data has been structured, reduced and analysedwith the help of a framework of analysis that has been developed throughout the pilot study.The results of this study lean on previous research and a main divider in pricing strategies has beenidentified as businesses use either a data-driven or an intuition-driven approach in their strategic workwith pricing. As such, it is proposed that the division of pricing strategies need to be acknowledged, sincethe separate methodological approaches may lead to different results, while implying different costs,resources and required knowledge. Furthermore, the division may form a basis for competitive advantage,be extended to other areas of strategic management and become clearer, since the adoption of technologyand its impact will increase in the future. As a result, in the future of pricing, they key is going to be toaccount for both the strategic perspectives and the methodological approaches in the strategic decisionmaking process of pricing.

Entrevistas envolvendo técnicos ligados à área de confinamento são frequentemente utilizadas com o intuito de descrever as práticas nutricionais e de manejo em diversos países. Desta forma foi elaborado e aplicado um questionário com 78 questões pela ferramenta SurveyMonkey®. Este questionário foi dividido em seis seções: (i) informações sobre o entrevistado (n = 2); (ii) critérios de abate (n = 35); (iii) informações sobre preço (n = 9); (iv) opções de manejo dos animais (n = 21); (v) distribuição dos animais nas baias (n = 5); e (vi) formulação de dietas (n = 6). Os entrevistados constituíram três grupos, sendo nutricionistas consultores (NC; n = 23), proprietários de confinamento (PC; n = 21) e gerentes de confinamento pertencentes a frigoríficos (GF; n = 8). A maioria dos entrevistados possuíam ensino superior, de acordo com 86% dos respondentes, e no total, eram responsáveis por 1.104.990 cabeças confinadas em 2015. Cerca de 58% dos entrevistados realizavam dois ciclos de confinamento por ano, cada ciclo com um período entre 80 e 100 dias de acordo com 44% dos entrevistados. Mais de 80% dos animais confinados pelos entrevistados eram machos, de acordo com 65% dos respondentes. Estes machos eram inteiros para 73% dos entrevistados, predominantemente da raça Nelore (75%). Os animais confinados possuíam idade média de 24,7 ± 0,84 meses e entraram com 378,1 ± 8,9 kg, saíram com 511,4 ± 10,7 em 107,6 ± 11,1 dias de confinamento. Na formação inicial dos lotes, o peso foi a característica mais usada (75%), entretanto, aproximadamente 71% dos entrevistados utilizaram uma combinação de critérios, como por exemplo, o sexo, a raça e o peso. Ferramentas computacionais foram utilizadas para gerenciamento do confinamento (71%) e na formulação das dietas (69%). Entretanto, 61% dos entrevistados não usaram nenhum software específico para caracterizar os animais na entrada do confinamento. O principal custo operacional (retirando os alimentos e o boi magro) foi a mão de obra (69%). As consultas sobre preços de itens alimentares e não alimentares foram realizadas diretamente com fornecedores finais por 59% dos entrevistados. Altos custos dos alimentos (52%) e os baixos preços do boi gordo (42%) eram motivadores da redução do número de animais ou da não realização do confinamento. Critérios econômicos mostraram-se determinantes na definição do período de confinamento, como a espera por melhores preços do boi gordo (36%) ou por bonificação em razão de melhor acabamento (29%). Os confinadores verificam o preço de mercado do boi terminado principalmente através da internet (61%). O destino dos animais era o mercado interno para 69% dos entrevistados e 60% dos respondentes também vendiam para o mercado externo por meio dos frigoríficos. O momento do abate foi definido, majoritariamente (71%), pelos gerentes do confinamento. Os resultados demonstraram que 65% dos entrevistados utilizaram o peso e o acabamento, ambos estimados visualmente, para indicar o momento do abate. Um feedback sobre a carcaça foi repassado ao responsável por essa decisão (71%) e 61% dos entrevistados ressaltaram a importância desta informação na melhoria da decisão. Dificuldades na identificação do momento ideal para o abate foram desafios descritos pelos entrevistados e 84,6% dos respondentes reconheceram que o método atual pode ser melhorado. Apenas um terço dos entrevistados (33%) vendia animais utilizando contratos futuros. O rendimento de carcaça (38%) e o preço da arroba (25%) foram os principais fatores na utilizados pelos entrevistados para escolha do frigorifico para abate. Os principais critérios mencionados como bonificação na carcaça foram: idade e sexo, adequação para exportação, rastreabilidade e características da carcaça (como gordura subcutânea, peso, área de olho de lombo e gordura) e raça. Em contraposição, segundo os entrevistados, as principais penalidades nos valores da carcaça ocorrem por condenação pelo serviço de inspeção federal, características da carcaça, lesões por vacinas, contusões, idade, sexo e resíduos de medicamentos. Verificou-se que parâmetro de qualidade da carne (e.g. maciez, marmoreio) não foi critério relevante nem para bonificação (5%) nem para penalização (3%). Os resultados deste trabalho descreveram vários parâmetros do manejo e da comercialização dos confinamentos nacionais. Os entrevistados fazem pouco uso das ferramentas de hedge, bem como utilizam poucas ferramentas computacionais para otimizar a atividade. A determinação do ponto de abate é feita com grande subjetividade, baseando-se quase que exclusivamente em avaliações visuais tanto para peso quanto para acabamento.
Interviews with feedlot managers are used to describe nutritional and management practices in several countries. In this way, a questionnaire containing 78 questions was structured and applied through the SurveyMonkey® web tool. The questionnaire was divided into six sections: (i) general information (n = 2); (ii) slaughter criteria (n = 35); (iii) pricing information (n = 9); (iv) animal handling options (n = 21); (v) animal\'s allotment in feedlot pens (n = 5); and (vi) diet formulation (n = 6). Three groups comprised the interviewees: consultant nutritionists (NC; n = 23), feedlot owners (FO; n = 21) and packers feedlot managers (FP; n = 8). Most respondents had a bachelor degree (86% of the respondents) and were responsible for feeding approximately 1,104,990 animals in 2015. About 58% of the interviewees worked with two cycles of animals per year. The most usual feeding period was between 80 and 100 days (44% of respondents). More than 80% of the animals were males, 65% with 73% of the respondents feeding intact males. Most of the cattle were of Nellore breed (75% of respondents). The feeder animals had an average age of 24.7 ± 0.84 and 378.1 ± 8.9 kg, with final weight of 511.4 ± 10.7 kg and 107.6 ± 11.1 days respectively. Among the criteria used for pen formation, weight was the most used (75%), however, approximately 71% of respondents used a combination of different criteria primarily weight, gender and breed. The use of computational tools for feedlot management (71%) and diet formulation (69%) were common among respondents, however, interviewees (61%) did not use any software to characterize animals at the feedlot entry. According to the interviewees, the main cost of the feedlot, (excluded feeder and feed cost), was labor (69%). Products used were acquired directly with the final suppliers (59%). High feed costs (52%) and low finished cattle prices (42%) made interviewees reduce the number of animals fed shutting down the feedlot for that particular year. Economic criteria defined the feedlot period, with respondents waiting for an increase in finished cattle prices (36%) or for greater fat deposition (29%). Finished cattle prices were obtained through the internet (61%) and 69% of respondents sold to the domestic market. About 60% of respondents sold cattle for the international market through the meatpackers. The feedlot manager was responsible in most cases for the slaughter decision (71%). The results showed that 65% of the interviewees used weight and fat cover, both visually estimated, to decide the time of slaughter. The person making the decision to slaughter received feedback information from the packers about carcass traits in 71% of the cases. This information improved the decision to slaughter according to 61% of respondents. They considered identifying the optimal time for slaughter a great challenge and 85% of the respondents recognized that their current slaughter endpoint identification method could be improved. Only one third of all respondents (33%) sell cattle using futures contracts for finished cattle. Carcass dressing (38%) and price (25%) were the main reasons to elect a meatpacker to slaughter their animals. Criteria most frequently mentioned to reward the beef producer were: age and gender, suitability for export, traceability and carcass characteristics (including subcutaneous fat, weight, ribeye area and carcass fat) and breed. In contrast, according to the interviewees, criteria quoted for penalties were Federal Inspection Service condemnations, carcass characteristics, vaccination injuries, bruises, age and gender, and drug residues. Meat quality parameters (e.g. tenderness, marbling) were not relevant criteria for the Brazilian meatpackers, neither for bonus (5%) neither for penalty (3%). The interviewees make little use of hedge options, and use almost no computational tools to optimize their activity. The determination of the time of slaughter is made with great subjectivity, relying almost exclusively on visual evaluations for both weight and degree of finish.

This thesis responds to the need of the company ILLKO, s.r.o. to develop and unify the decision-making process for cases when there is a customer request for a special or extraordinary type of product. In the thesis, the business area of the company, supplier and customer spectrum are described as well as a summary of the company’s capacity and capabilities. The output is a formalized decision-making process reflecting both theoretical knowledge based on the academic bibliography and long-term approved experience gained from the business practice. This process is clearly illustrated in schematic flow charts which are described in detail in corresponding chapters. The developed methodological procedure will help the top management of the company to facilitate, automate and improve future decision-making on the specific customer requirements.

The aim of the diploma thesis is to solve a particular problem via methods and instruments of multi-criteria decision-making under risk -- the choice of a suitable location of a swimming pool in the city of Písek. Every single phase of the decision-making process is described in the theoretical part of the thesis and followed in the practical part. The process was divided into stages: the problem specification, setting objectives, determination of the importance of the criteria, generation of alternatives and identification of their consequences, determination the significance of the risk factors, the probability of their occurrence, setting the impacts of the risk alternatives, evaluation of the alternatives and the choice of the most desirable one, potential threats and opportunities analysis. The theoretical part consists of a review of methods suitable for the given phase. More in-detail focus is put on the methods used in the practical part. To sum up, the diploma thesis provide the reader with the recommendation of the most appropriate location for the construction of the swimming pool. Additionally, it identifies the most important threats and opportunities related to this preference.

Numerous empirical studies outside of forestry have analyzed the role of price expectations in different decision processes. Empirical studies using price expectations in forestry research is a relatively new field of endeavor. Past studies have typically ignored or given cursory treatment to the role of price expectations. This study provides a review of studies in forestry that have attempted to incorporate price expectations into model formulations. Models are then developed to explain the short-run harvest, and long-run regeneration expenditure decisions by the non-industrial private forest owner, incorporating different distributed lag formulations to account for price expectations. The estimated models for the short-run harvest decision, using cross sectional non-aggregated data, indicates that price expectations play a significant role in this decision process. Therefore, price expectations should be incorporated in some form, (i.e. different forms of distributed lags), to properly specify models. Estimated models for the long-run regeneration expenditure decision indicates a weak link between economic variables and the regeneration decision. For both types of models, estimated coefficients for personal characteristics of landowners are in general considered insignificant, indicating the lack of influence that personal characteristics have on these decision processes
