COVID-19 has reminded us that death is not only inevitable but also, for those who are constructed as death bound, imminent and immanent. In this paper, I contend that this season of mass death has led to an intensified thanatopolitics where the state has sought to take over full control of corpses and the death world. This has major implications for how we order and relate to the African death world. Mourning and funeral rites are important sites of sociality for the processing of loss, ritual cleansing and renewal. The COVID-19 pandemic and the dramatic rise in deaths associated with it mean that mourning, rites, sociality and potential renewal are fundamentally disrupted. This disruption occurs because rituals and customs associated with how Africans honour and bury the dead have to change as a result of health protocols and government regulations that are promulgated against contagion. However, through media reports on those killed by COVID-19, I demonstrate that thanatopolitics remains fragile in the face of the erotics of mourning and fugitive mourning that families and communities engage in. This paper is an effort to engage with the subject of pandemic death and the meaning of what we lose when ritual and relation are threatened. It presents the erotics of mourning and fugitive mourning as forms of resistance that the black underclasses are always insurgently engaged in.

Although much is known regarding intestinal stem cell (ISC) self-renewal and differentiation, the specific mechanisms used for their elimination is unclear. We recently discovered that the pro-apoptotic protein ARTS, a Septin4 isoform, interacts with X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) in the ISC niche to regulate stem cell survival during intestinal homeostasis and regeneration. These findings point to an intriguing avenue of translational research, examining how manipulation of stem cell apoptosis through the ARTS/XIAP module can affect stem-cell-dependent processes.

AbstractThis paper explores the key characteristics of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf's mission theology that influenced the early Moravian missional practice. After discussing the early eighteenth century European historical context and the Spirit-renewal of the Herrnhut community, the paper considers Zinzendorf's theology on the death of Christ, the prominent role of the Holy Spirit, and harvesting the "first fruits." These theological distinctives contributed in determining the motivation and message of these pioneer Protestant missionaries. It then takes into account some of the subsequent methods such as working with the marginalized, practicing the love of Christ in cultural humility, and preaching the gospel in the vernacular. The main contributions of the early Moravians to mission were that they brought an understanding that spiritual renewal preceded mission renewal, the atoning death of Christ is central to mission theology, and a Protestant recognition that it had an obligation to do mission. On the other hand, the foremost negative aspects of Moravian mission were their obsession with the physical death of Christ and an ignorance of the broader social issues that at times resulted in a lack of contextualization, religious syncretism, indifference to social justice, and extreme subjectivism.

Multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) sustain blood cell production throughout an individual's lifespan through complex processes ultimately leading to fates of self-renewal, differentiation or cell death decisions. A fine balance between these decisions in vivo allows for the size of the HSC pool to be maintained. While many key factors involved in regulating HSC/progenitor cell differentiation and cell death are known, the critical regulators of HSC self-renewal are largely unknown. In recent years, however, a number of studies describing methods of increasing or decreasing the numbers of HSCs in a given population have emerged. Of major interest here are the emerging roles of retinoids in the regulation of HSCs.

The purpose of this study is to explore the experience and death perceptions of elderly terminal cancer patients after they were diagnosed with cancer. Data were collected by conducting one-on-one interviews with nine research participants. Also, the collected data were understood in depth based on Medard Boss’ Daseinsanalytic approach (1963). As a result, 17 categories and 45 subcategories related to the research participants’ death perceptions were revealed. These were structured based on five concepts of various existentialias, including historicity, co-existence, fundamental attunement mood, corporeality, and essential meaning. In addition, by deriving the main idea from each existentialias, the Daseinsanalysis existentialias structure diagram of death experience was suggested. In other words, the death perceptions of participants were revealed with five main categories, including ‘Get rid of one's obsession’, ‘Wearing new clothes of life’, ‘Concerns for those left behind’, ‘Renewal of one's body’, and ‘Greeting to death’. At last, a few discussion were presented based on the findings of this study.

This paper aims to describe and analyze the contribution of Islamic law in the regulation (policy formulation) of the death penalty in the context of reforming the national criminal law. Determining the death penalty as a means to tackle crime is a policy choice because capital punishment is a pro and con issue among legal experts. Because the debate about the death penalty is related to the right to life which in international legal instruments and the 1945 Constitution is included in the category of rights that cannot be reduced under any circumstances (non-derogable rights). Islamic law recognizes the death penalty in a crime that has been determined by Allah SWT. in the Al-Qur’an. The death penalty in Islam gives its color with the idea of balance that does not only focus on the perpetrators of the crime but also the victim. Of course, this idea of balance is following the basic values of Pancasila. The death penalty in Islam in the qishahs punishment recognizes the concept of forgiveness from the victim’s family which needs to be developed in the future, especially in the draft Criminal Code which until now has not been ratified as a means for national law reform.

Thioridazine is an antipsychotic that has been shown to induce cell death and inhibit self-renewal in a broad spectrum of cancer cells. The mechanisms by which these effects are mediated are currently unknown but are presumed to result from the inhibition of dopamine receptor 2 (DRD2). Here we show that the self-renewal of several, but not all, triple-negative breast cancer cell lines is inhibited by thioridazine. The inhibition of self-renewal by thioridazine in these cells is mediated by DRD2 inhibition. Further, we demonstrate that DRD2 promotes self-renewal in these cells via a STAT3- and IL-6–dependent mechanism. We also show that thioridazine induces a G1 arrest and a loss in cell viability in all tested cell lines. However, the reduction in proliferation and cell viability is independent of DRD2 and STAT3. Our results indicate that although there are cell types in which DRD2 inhibition results in inhibition of STAT3 and self-renewal, the dramatic block in cancer cell proliferation across many cell lines caused by thioridazine treatment is independent of DRD2 inhibition.

Cancer is one of the primary causes of death worldwide. Tumour malignancy is related to tumor heterogeneity, which has been suggested to be due to a small subpopulation of tumor cells named cancer stem cells (CSCs). CSCs exert a key role in metastasis development, tumor recurrence, and also epithelial–mesenchymal transition, apoptotic resistance, self-renewal, tumorigenesis, differentiation, and drug resistance. Several current therapies fail to eradicate tumors due to the ability of CSCs to escape different programmed cell deaths. Thus, developing CSC-selective and programmed death-inducing therapeutic approaches appears to be of primary importance. In this review, we discuss the main programmed cell death occurring in cancer and the promising CSC-targeting agents developed in recent years. Even if the reported studies are encouraging, further investigations are necessary to establish a combination of agents able to eradicate CSCs or inhibit their growth and proliferation.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. The major cause of heart failure is the death of the myocardium caused by myocardial infarction, detrimental cardiac remodeling, and cardiac fibrosis occurring after the injury. This study aimed at discovering the role of the anti-aging protein α-klotho (KL), which is the co-receptor of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23), in cardiac regeneration, fibrosis, and repair. We found that the anti-apoptotic function of soluble KL in isoproterenol-treated H9c2 cardiomyocytes was independent of FGF23 in vitro. In vivo, isoproterenol-induced cardiac fibrosis and cardiomyocyte and endothelial cell apoptosis were reduced by KL treatment. Moreover, the number of Ki67-positive endothelial cells and microvessel density within the isoproterenol-injured myocardium were increased upon KL treatment. However, by using genetic fate-mapping models, no evident cardiomyocyte proliferation within the injured myocardium was detected with or without KL treatment. Collectively, the cardioprotective functions of KL could be predominantly attributed to its anti-apoptotic and pro-survival activities on endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes. KL could be a potential cardioprotective therapeutic agent with anti-apoptotic and pro-survival activities on cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells.

To achieve this goal, this research was conducted by observing events or facts deemed relevant to the research, by collecting primary data and secondary data through a juridical-normative approach with qualitative analysis methods. The study with this theme can be concluded that the choice or stipulation of the death penalty as a means to tackle crime is essentially a policy choice. The concept of the draft Criminal Code issues the death penalty from the main criminal system and lists it as a special principal crime or as an exception (special) punishment. These laws are made to maintain the balance of human life in order to create harmony and order.

There is renewal of interests to the organs that could be obtained from asystolic donors. Our goal was to identify ethical issues raised by attempts of classification and terms such kind of organ donors depended on time and place of cardiac arrest. Based only on the reasoning of medical experts group these principles going to be routine State policy. That followed by erased roles of physicians and misleading the meaning or organ transplant program. From our point of view there should be clear opposite position between death and life in order to initiate organ procurement activity. That is possible only in case of artificial blood supply for preserving transplant-to-be-organs after relevant time between cardiac arrest and start of such kind of perfusion procedure.

According to Callum Brown in The Death of Christian Britain, from 1963 Christianity in Britain went on a downward spiral. More generally, Brown sees the 1960s as the decade in which the Christian-centred culture that had conferred identity on Britain was rejected. This claim, however, which has received much attention, needs to be set alongside David Bebbington’s analysis of British Christianity in the 1960s. In Evangelicalism in Modern Britain, Bebbington notes that in 1963 charismatic renewal came to an Anglican parish in Beckenham, Kent, when the vicar, George Forester, and some parishioners received the ‘baptism of the Holy Spirit’ and began to speak in tongues. During the next quarter of a century, Bebbington continues, the charismatic movement became a powerful force in British Christianity. Both Brown and Bebbington view the 1960s as a decade of significant cultural change. Out of that period of upheaval came the decline of cultural Christianity but also the emergence of a new expression of Christian spirituality – charismatic renewal. Within the evangelical section of the Church this new movement was an illustration of the ability of evangelicalism to engage in adaptation. To a large extent evangelical Anglicans were at the forefront of charismatic renewal in England. The Baptist denomination in England was, however, deeply affected from the mid-1960s onwards and it is this which will be examined here.

For centuries, the question of “whether there is life after death” has intrigued the mind of philosophers, and the same question fascinates researchers in the field of apoptosis today. The death of a cell is by no means the end of the story. On the contrary, growing evidence suggests that the clearance of apoptotic bodies by macrophages is an important regulatory component in tissue renewal. Without death by apoptosis, the life of reproductive tissues and their function would not be possible. The survival signals that counteract cell death also prepare the cells for apoptosis, and dead cells are important stimuli for tissue survival. The Fas/FasL system is an important mediator in apoptosis and is and excellent example of this apparently contradictory phenomenon.

AbstractAlthough Machiavelli argues that “return to first principles” is a necessary and perhaps even sufficient condition for counteracting political corruption, few scholars have engaged in a sustained textual analysis of Discourses III.1, the chapter in which he outlines the meaning of this enigmatic concept. Reassessing Machiavelli's exempla in this chapter will reveal that return to first principles consists in the revival of the ethos of innovation and public-spiritedness that accompanies every successful political founding. This process of renewal entails reviving the psychological forces that initially guide human beings to establish new political orders, including fear of violent death and longing for glory. Existing interpretations of D III.1 have tended to emphasize renewal through fear-invoking punishment, neglecting Machiavelli's examples of renewal through exemplary acts of civic virtue. A careful analysis of instruments and agents of return to first principles will illustrate how both spectacular punishment and virtuous acts of self-sacrifice converge to counteract corruption and foster political innovation.

While the nature of their experience is unknown, hospice workers may unconsciously strive for encounters with death as a way of healing themselves and preparing for death. The purpose of this case study was to explore the psychological experience of hospice workers, whose repeated encounters with death may affect their own psyche. The study integrated psycho-biographical and hermeneutic methods. Personal growth was conceptually defined as a process of turning inward and integration of personal experiences into a larger reality. The elements supporting personal growth were present in 53 to 88% of the 17 hospice workers of the sample. The emerging themes were interconnectedness, suffering and sacrifice, and birth and rebirth. Caring to the dying becomes practice for one's own death and a form of renewal in the life of the hospice workers.
