This essay is about criminal cases with deadly outcomes in Skåne during the period 1950 - 1959. The seven chosen cases were gathered from criminal records from the ”härdansrätt” in Frosta and Eslöv. These cases have not previously been written about and therefore somewhat unheard of. The focus will lay on the gender, age and social status of the perpetrators. Some of the years in are of less importance since no crimes with deathly outcome was found. The most dominated cause of death are crimes commired in traffic. Traffic offenses spiked in the 1950’s when the use of motor vehicles was more common and more people fell victim to those kind of accidents. The main point of the essay is to examine why the accidents/crimes led to death and how the media wrote about it. Sweden’s first mass murderer, Tore Hedin, will be mentioned. He is worth mentioning since he was active during the chosen time period, but since he wasn’t put before a trial, he won’t be part of the main study.

The Cyprus problem of the 1950s was resolved not by British initiatives, but by a settlement based on an agreement between the Greek and Turkish governments. Because of this, it demonstrates not only the decline of British influence but also the rise of Third World powers in international diplomacy. Throughout the negotiations, however, the British continually underestimated the Turkish Government. Even today, the full extent of the Turkish role in the resolution of the Cyprus emergency continues to be underappreciated. This thesis, therefore, examines the Turkish role in the Cyprus question from 1950 to 1959. Like British officials at the time, it chronologically links Turkish domestic concerns, international responsibilities and Communist fears to the on-going Cyprus issue. It questions the traditional view of Turkey as a British pawn and argues that its Cypriot policy, from defending the status quo to pressing for partition and finally agreeing to independence, was not solely influenced by international events. Instead, Turkish policies toward Cyprus were based on a combination of global and domestic factors, as well as pressure from the Turkish Cypriot minority: just as British decolonization policies were influenced by external, internal, and colonial concerns. It concludes that the persistence of oriental stereotypes has concealed this similarity, leading to a misunderstanding of the Turkish attitude. The British perception of Turkish policies toward Cyprus not only reveals that the Turkish motivations have been oversimplified but also that these significantly influenced British strategies for maintaining sovereignty in Cyprus. The dependence of the United Kingdom on Turkish support in the Middle East, especially following events at Suez in 1956, allowed Turkey to seize the initiative in the negotiations. The 1959 agreement leading to Cypriot independence, therefore, was not the result of British planning but due to separate negotiations between the Greeks and Turks.

Ignas Šeinius – diplomatas, atstovavęs Lietuvą tarpukariu, 1927 m. veiklą nutraukęs, o po Lietuvos okupacijos prisijungęs prie Lietuvos diplomatinės tarnybos (LDT), kurioje kartu su kitais jos nariais kėlė Lietuvos laisvinimo bylą ir reprezentavo tėvynės vardą Vakarų šalyse. Tačiau I. Šeiniaus diplomatinė veikla iki šiol nėra susilaukusi platesnių tyrinėjimų. Greičiausiai viena iš šių tyrinėjimų stokos priežasčių yra tai, kad I. Šeiniaus archyvai ilgai buvo saugomi Švedijoje, ne Lietuvoje. 2011 m. įvykęs jų pargabenimas į Lietuvą sąlygojo naujų istoriografinių tyrinėjimų apie šio diplomato veiklą atsiradimą. Taigi šio darbo tikslas yra išnagrinėti I. Šeiniaus diplomatinę veiklą Švedijoje 1954-1959 m. Didžioji dalis duomenų paimti iš LCVA saugomo I. Šeiniaus fondo 675. Prisijungti prie LDT 1954 m. I. Šeinius buvo paprašytas Stasio Lozoraičio, buvusiam Lietuvos atstovui Švedijoje Vladui Žilinskui išvykus į JAV. Visą atstovavimo laikotarpį I. Šeinius dirbo kaip neoficialus Lietuvos atstovas Skandinavijos valstybėse. Ignas Scheynius – the diplomat, represented Lithuania in interwar period, after 1927 years he suspended that activity, but after Lithuanian occupation came back and attached to Lithuanian Diplomatic Servise (LDS), where he, together with others members of LDS, raised Lithuanian liberation case and represented Lithuanian name to the West countries. But I. Scheynius diplomatic activity was not explored very widely. Possibly, the one reason of the lack of that kind researches is that the archives of I. Scheynius long time were kept in Sweden, not in Lithuania. In 2011 they were brought to Lithuania and that caused the appearance of new historiography researches about I. Scheynius diplomatic activity. Therefore the aim of this paper is to investigate the diplomatic activity of I. Scheynius in 1954-1959 years. To reach the aim was analysed the documents of I. Scheynius activity saved in Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania, number of fund 675. To join to LDS in 1954 I. Scheynius was asked by LDS chief Stasys Lozoraitis, after the last representative in Sweden V. Žilinskas moved to USA. All the time of his agency I. Cette thèse étudie la signification du magistère aleixandrin dans les lettres espagnoles de 1939 à 1959. La place occupée par Aleixandre durant le franquisme s'inscrit dans le processus de récupération par le régime d'une culture libérale et est indissociable de la valeur représentative du poète d'un héritage poétique et, par association, idéologique, tronqué par la guerre civile. Le magistère d'Aleixandre repose en partie sur la manière dont le poète transcende des oppositions esthétiques et idéologiques, symptomatiques des différents positionnements adoptés vis-à-vis d'un héritage problématique. La première partie étudie l'établissement du magistère aleixandrin à travers la réception de l'auteur dans la presse. La deuxième partie interroge les fondements textuels du magistère dans Sombra del paraíso, le recueil qui a consacré Aleixandre. La troisième partie montre comment le magistère se maintient par la personne même du poète et le mythe dont il fait l'objet comme figure fondatrice
This work is an analysis of the ambiguities of the works and viewpoints of Aleixandre between 1939 and 1959. Francoist attempts to take over parts of the pre-war liberal culture helps to explain the social, cultural and symbolic status which Aleixandre reached during these years. Aleixandre certainly stood for a poetical and ideological legacy which the new regime had initially denied and later truncated. In fact, the poet succeeded against all odds in reconciling opposing aesthetical and political stances which had been fighting against each other during the war, by building consensus around his own poetical leadership. The first part of this work shows how literary critics paved the way to the new status given to Aleixandre in 1944. The second part investigates more specifically Sombra del paraíso (1944) and the textual ground for the magisterio of Aleixandre. The third part focuses on the way the poet himself contributed to the creation of his own myth, namely the “founding father” of modern Spanish poetry

De 1919 à 1939, les municipalités rémoises sont marquées par la domination des radicaux, alliés d'abord à la SFIO puis ensuite à la droite et largement dominées par la personnalité de Paul Marchandeau. Après 1945, la situation apparaît beaucoup plus fluctuante. De 1945 à 1959 on a affaire à des municipalités fragiles qui voient se succéder à leur tête successivement un communiste, un RPF, un radical et deux MRP. C’est là le résultat cumulé du scrutin proportionnel et de l’isolement du PCF qui fait que les majorités ne peuvent se constituer qu’entre les partis non communistes aux rivalités incessantes. Mais les municipalités, ce sont aussi des individus. Deux générations d’édiles peuvent être individualisées. Celle de l’entre-deux-guerres qui vieillit progressivement en fonctions, sans se renouveler, et celle de la Quatrième République qui connaît un renouvellement plus important et apparaît davantage en phase avec la société rémoise des années 1950
From 1919 to 1939, the municipalities of Reims were marked by the domination of radical party allied to the SFIO and then to the right and largely dominated by the personality of Paul Marchandeau. After 1945 the situation appeared much more variable. From 1945 to 1959 we are dealing with fragile municipalities headed successively by a communist, an RPF, a radical and two members of MRP. This is the cumulative result of proportional representation and isolation of the FPC which led to the fact that majorities could be formed only between the non-communist parties in which was incessant rivalry.. But municipalities are represented by individuals. Two generations of councilors can be individualized. The one that was in office between the two world wars who remained in office without any significant change and the one of the Fourth Republic, who experienced a larger renewal and appeared to be more in line with the Reims society of the time

Vladimirovo inicijuotai Vilniaus universiteto istorinių rinkinių grąžinimo 1956–1959 m. akcijai ir jos įvertinimui XX-XXI a. kultūros paveldo judėjimo kontekste. Darbo objektas yra išskirtinis tuo, kad rekonstruojama akcija, kuriai sunkiai randama atitikmenų Lietuvos kultūros istorijoje. Magistro darbo tikslas buvo remiantis publikuotais ir nepublikuotais šaltiniais susisteminti, apibendrinti ir rekonstruoti senųjų Vilniaus universiteto rinkinių grąžinimo akciją bei atskleisti ir įvertinti akcijos reikšmę Lietuvos kultūrai. Darbui atlikti buvo nustatyti šie uždaviniai: 1) susisteminti Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekos turtų išvežimo į Rusiją istoriografinius šaltinius; 2) pateikti L. Vladimirovo akcijos sumanymo ištakų ir priežasčių analizę, 3) išanalizuoti senųjų Vilniaus universiteto rinkinių grąžinimo iš Maskvos, Kijevo, Lvovo ir Charkovo bei Leningrado publikuotus ir nepublikuotus šaltinius; 4) įvertinti L. MA thesis “The Return of Vilnius University’s Historic Collections (1956–1959)” discusses the process of repatriation of Vilnius University’s historic collections, initiated by Professor L. Vladimirov in 1956–1959, and evaluates the significance of this process in the context of relocation of cultural heritage in the 20th and 21st centuries. The subject of the thesis is exceptional in that it is a reconstruction of a process that has very few equivalents in the cultural history of Lithuania. The purpose of this MA thesis was to draw a systematic and comprehensive reconstructed picture of the process of repatriation of Vilnius University’s collections and to reveal and evaluate its significance to Lithuanian culture. The research was based on published and unpublished material. In order to achieve the said purpose, the following tasks were set: 1) systematize historiographic sources on the relocation of Vilnius University library’s collections to Russia; 2) present an analysis of the origins and reasons of the process initiated by L. Vladimirov; 3) analyze published and unpublished sources on the return of Vilnius University’s collections from Moscow, Kiev, Lvov, and Harkov; 4) evaluate the significance of L. Vladimirov’s effort in the context of relocation of printed heritage in the 20th and 21st centuries. The standard historiography sees the working class as a passive bystander in the insurrectionary phase of the Cuban revolution, assuming that the real struggle was conducted by a rural guerrilla army. However, an examination of the archival evidence contradicts this view and shows that workers played a much more active role in the defeat of the Batista regime than they are normally given credit for. At the start of the 1950s, Cuba was suffering a crisis in profitability as the world price of sugar declined. This led the employers to conduct a productivity drive backed by the full repressive force of the Cuban state. Going on strike in a dictatorship is a life or death decision and workers need to feel some confidence in their chances of survival and in the possibility of successfully gaining a result that would be in their political and economic interests. Thus, following the defeat of a wave of militantly organised strikes in 1955, significant numbers of working class militants felt of the need for armed support to enable them defend their wages and conditions. Starting from the city of Guantánamo and spreading to cover most of the island, these activists constructed an impressive, clandestine, working class organisation in alliance with the rebel army which, after several failed attempts, proved capable of calling a successful general strike in January 1959. This strike was crucial to the rebel victory. This thesis, based on primary source material found in archives and private collections in Havana, Manzanillo, Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba, will re-examine working class participation in the Cuban insurrection of the 1950s, concentrating on organised labour rather than the role of individual citizens.

A presente dissertação teve como objetivo central analisar o processo de modernização urbana, higienização e normatização da cidade de Jacobina ocorrido em meados dos anos de 1950, durante a gestão municipal do engenheiro agrônomo Orlando Oliveira Pires (1955-1959). Através de textos jornalísticos, documentos administrativos, leis municipais, fotografias, Código de Posturas, livro de atas da Câmara Municipal, Código Sanitário do Estado, relatório de prestação de conta do gestor e textos memorialísticos, ao longo do trabalho procuramos descrever e examinar, por um lado, as inovações no plano urbanístico, como a construção de uma larga avenida, as obras depavimentação, o saneamento e asseio das principais ruas, a implantação do serviço de água encanada, a ampliação do serviço de energia elétrica e a edificação do estádio municipal, apontando como esse processo de modernização/urbanização se deu de forma parcial e excludente, restringindo-se às ruas da área central da cidade. Por outro, as ações desenvolvidas no sentido de higienizar e normatizar os espaços urbanos e as práticas da população, empreendidas pelo prefeito, pelos médicossanitaristas e pelos jornalistas, demonstrando que essas medidas enfrentavam tensionamentos constantes com a população. Acompanhando o cotidiano das ruas, buscamos visualizar as múltiplas práticas de uso e apropriação do espaço urbano que afloravam nas ruas de Jacobina, fissurando a ordenação urbana pretendida.
This master’s thesis had as its main objective to analyze the process of urban modernization and sanitation of the town of Jacobina that happened in the second half of 1950, during the municipal governing of Orlando Oliveira Pires (1955-1959). Using material as newspapers texts, administrative documents, municipal laws, hotographs, Code a Conduct, minute books of the town council, State Sanitation Code, accountability reports of the mayor and memory texts,along this research, we search to describe and examine, on the one hand, the innovations in urban planning, as theconstruction of a large avenue, paving, sanitation and neatness of the main streets; the implantation of plumbing, the enhancement of electricity services and the building of municipal stadium, pointing out how this process of modernization/urbanization happened in a partial and excluding way, taking place basically on the streets of the downtown area. On the other hand, the action developed aiming at sanitizing and standardizing the conduct in urban areas and the practices of citizens, proposed by the mayor, sanitation-doctors and journalists; demonstrating that these measures frequently confronted with the people. Accompanying the daily-life of these streets, we search to visualize the multiple usage and appropriation of the urban area that appeared in the streets of Jacobina, breaking with the intended urban order.

Els estudis generals realitzats sobre la història de l'art català encara no han profunditzat en la història de l'art local. L'apropament a "quan" i " com" van arribar les avantguardes del Segle XX a Sabadell són una forma de contribuir en aquest camp.

Es constata l'absència i dificultat en l'arribada i consolidació de les considerades Primeres Avantguardes. D'altra banda, la Guerra Civil, el 1936-1939, va suposar un tall per a les incipients iniciatives que s'anaven generant els anys trenta. La dictadura va condemnar definitivament tot intent renovador en favor de les tendències naturalistes més acadèmiques i conservadores en el món artístic. Els intents de crear un art franquista, si bé no van consolidar una proposta estètica i estilística, sí van incidir en determinades obres i en l'ambient artístic, carregat de censura i ús polític de l'art com a propaganda del règim. L'arribada de les segones avantguardes, a finals dels anys quaranta i principis dels cinquanta, suposa en el fons per a la ciutat l'arribada de la renovació avantguardista, sense haver de passar evolutivament per les primeres. En contra de la potenciació a les avantguardes, concretament de l'informalisme, que se suposa realitzava per interessos polítics el règim franquista, els artistes que militaven en aquestes tendències a la ciutat van haver de lluitar molt en contra d'un ambient conservador i antiavantguardista.

La renovació dels llenguatges plàstics a la ciutat la va dur a terme un petit nombre d'artistes, dotze o tretze, en un panorama amb més de 200 artistes. Una aposta molt valenta i determinant perquè l'avantguarda arribés, se'n conegués i se'n parlés d'ella, més encara si es té en compte que no van aconseguir vendes ni un mercat estable.

La situació artística, junt amb el context social i polític, dibuixen un moment d'arribada de les avantguardes en el qual són inseparables els termes "avantguarda - franquisme - art local" desenvolupant un gran paper en la consolidació d'un nou art a Catalunya. Aquesta visió dóna un paper rellevant a les necessàries aportacions d'una història de l'art local encara per consolidar.

The approach to the "when" and "how" the avant-gardes of the 20th. century reached Sabadell are one way of contributing to this field.

The absence and difficulty of the arrival and consolidation of those considered the first vanguards is verified. Furthermore the Civil War -1936/1939- caused a cut in the incipid initiatives that were being generated in the thirties. The dictatorship completely condemned any attempt at renovation, but favoured the more academic and conservative naturalist tendencies in the artistic world. The attempts at creativity plus a franquist art, although an esthetical and stylistic proposition was not consolidated, did make an impact on certain works and on the artistic environment, which was changed with censorship and political use of art as propaganda for the regim.

The arrival of the Vanguards in the late forties, early fifties, basically, presumed for the town the arrival of the vanguardist renovation, without having to go through the phases of evolution as the firsts vanguards had done. Instead of promoting the vanguard, particularly the formalism, pressumably carried out in the interest of the franquist regime, the town's artists who were kind on these tendencies had to fight hard against a conservative and anti-vanguardist environment.

The renovation of the plastic languages in the town were carried out by a small group of artists, no more than twelve or thirteen, out of a panorama of over two hundred artists, a very brave bet which was decisive for the vanguardia to arrive, to become known and talked about, even more so when one takes into account that they did not make any sales or establish a stable market.

The artistic situation, together with the social and political context demonstrates the moment of the arrival of the vanguards in which the terms "vanguard"- "franquism"- "local art" are inseparable, developing an important role in the consolidation of a new art in Catalonia. This approach to the subject gives a relevant role to the necessary contributions to a history of local art yet to be consolidated.

This thesis challenges the dominant view that municipal elections tell us practically nothing about the preferences and attitudes of the voter to local issues and events, that municipal elections are no more than national referendums. It suggests that the influence of socio-economic environment and political context and indeed structural factors have hitherto been underestimated. It argues that municipal politics and voting behaviour impact upon parliamentary electoral behaviour and outcomes and thereby the politics of place impinge upon the national electoral level. The thesis employs a multi-disciplinary approach that combines the qualitative research methods of the historian and the quantitative statistical analysis of the political scientist to unravel the interactions between the politics of place and voting behaviour in Britain between 1959 and 1979 at a time of dealignment at the parliamentary level and increased politicisation of elections at the municipal level. Patterns and trends in party support at parliamentary elections in four constituencies were analysed using quantitative methods and contrasted with patterns and trends in party support at municipal elections in coterminous electoral units. Significant variance between the two levels of electoral activity was evidenced. The research then employed qualitative methods and evidence from four case studies was presented that local contextual factors could account for much of the disparity between municipal and national patterns of party support in these locations. Quantitative research methods were resumed and the statistical techniques of multivariate regression and logistic regression employed to analyse socio-economic, political and structural variables in relation to party support at municipal and parliamentary elections in the case study areas. The findings of the quantitative analysis corroborated much of the qualitative findings and the conclusion reached that the influence of contextual factors upon party support at municipal elections has been underestimated Furthermore, that the interdisciplinary methodology employed is one that others in both political science and history may fruitfully follow to the advantage of both disciplines.

O presente trabalho A São Paulo glamourosa. Encantos e desencantos (1949-1959) tem como objetivo compreender uma década do século XX que ficou conhecida como Anos Dourados . Esse clichê trouxe toda uma simbologia que esteve envolvida pela modernização e pela industrialização das principais metrópoles como a cidade de São Paulo. Entre os encantos visualizados nas propagandas dos produtos destinados ao mercado consumidor, estava a bebida alcoólica. As temáticas que envolvem os anúncios das bebidas entre outros evocam a maximização da felicidade. Por tudo isso se fez necessário questionar a década dourada. Assim foi possível desvelar a outra face dos dourados anos, onde a desilusão e o fracasso ficaram latentes, e a felicidade foi infeliz como cantou a boêmia Maysa. Nesse universo de encantos e desencantos os discursos médicos vieram legitimar a necessidade do tratamento e da vigilância mas nunca a cura daqueles que foram considerados inadaptados e doentes. Por fim a medicina veio como uma oficina de reparos e os pacientes vieram ora como dependentes de vícios festivos e por muitas vezes ilícitos, ora como dependentes de vícios medicalizados por isso lícitos. Los inicios del siglo XX, en términos de imagen, se caracterizan por el nacimiento de la cultura mediática. La influencia que ejercen los medios de comunicación en la constitución de imaginarios y representaciones sociales, en la construcción simbólica del mundo y su influencia en nuestra estructuración como sujetos/as, ha derivado en la formulación de cuestionamientos que abordan la imagen como discurso; problematizando cuerpo, género e identidad como un entramado cultural. Trabajos realizados desde las humanidades, las ciencias sociales, análisis del discurso, el psicoanálisis y los estudios culturales, han contribuido con valiosos aportes. Así destacan autores/as como Michel Foucault, Simone de Beauvoir, Julia Kristeva, Judith Butler, Pierre Bourdieu, Roger Chartier y estudiosos/as de las representaciones como Jacques Lacan, Luce Irigaray, Linda Nead, Naomi Wolf y Thomas Lacqueur, quienes han esbozado valiosas proposiciones sobre el cuerpo como territorio donde se conjugan múltiples discursos. Sus acercamientos posibilitaron entender que la fuerza normalizadora y disciplinaria del lenguaje nos haría parte de un mundo simbólicamente estructurado, donde cada sujeto/a está auto-contenido/a en un entramado cultural, como construcción de ese mismo discurso. La dicotomía hombre/mujer no pertenecería entonces al reflejo de una realidad “natural”, sino al resultado de una producción histórica y cultural. El sujeto/a social sería producido/a por y a través de las representaciones simbólicas. En estos términos, la explosión de imágenes que promuevan un modelo de género desde comienzos de siglo no es un dato anecdótico, sino que resulta parte fundamental en la incorporación de aquellos símbolos. Naomi Wolf señalaría que “la frenética acumulación de imágenes es una alucinación colectiva reaccionaria, engendrada tanto por hombres como por mujeres aturdidas y desorientadas por la rapidez con que se han transformado las relaciones entre ambos sexos”. Desde esta premisa la presente investigación ahonda en el cómo develar de manera crítica las múltiples relaciones entre imágenes y el sistema sexo/género ; a partir de un diálogo interdisciplinario que considera indispensable la de-construcción de estas visualidades para descifrar el discurso implícito. La explosión de un arquetipo de mujer sensual, íntimamente relacionado con anuncios y artículos de consumo, detonado gracias a la reproducción litográfica y masificado posteriormente por la publicidad, el cine, la industria de la moda y la belleza, comienza a instalar progresiva y sostenidamente un icono de feminidad. Este prototipo de femme fatale resulta ser el vínculo donde estrecharon lazos definitivamente el cuerpo femenino, la industria de masas y los objetos cotidianos de consumo; desde los inicio de los medias , su presencia fue explotada en las páginas de los magazines para hombres en USA y se introdujo en el Cono Sur gracias al impulso de la prensa escrita, la publicidad y la aparición de las historietas gráficas.

My dissertation offers the definitive account of the history of national communism in Soviet Latvia. I define national communism within the context of the concepts of Russification and Sovietisation. I provide an assessment of the contention of the school of Latvian historiography that Russian migration to Latvia was due to an official policy of Russification. I found that in the wake of Joseph Stalin’s death, leadership rivals Nikita Khrushchev and Lavrentii Beria cooperated to formulate a new nationality policy in the Soviet Republics in 1953, demonstrating the manipulation of nationality policy as a feature in the power struggle. I argue that it was in this context that Latvian national communism originated rather than its previously assumed emergence in 1956. In contrast to previous scholarship, I insist that the national communists operated as an identifiable faction within the Latvian Communist Party. I investigate the political rise of the national communists between 1953 and 1958, examining and evaluating each national communist policy including their controversial language and residency laws, and I uncovered new evidence of autarkic national communist economic plans. I identify their policies as nationalist and, ultimately, incompatible with Soviet socialism despite the partial liberalisation of the Soviet Union under Khrushchev. My dissertation uses complementary new evidence from Latvian and Russian archives to support and radically expand upon the theory of recent Western scholarship that an alliance of Stalinist hardliners in Moscow and Latvia, rather than Khrushchev, conspired to purge the Latvian national communists in 1959. This throws into question the causes of the other purges in nine republics between 1959 and 1961. Finally, my project augments our understanding of how the Soviet Communist Party functioned, particularly by showing precisely how the relationship between Moscow and the Soviet periphery relaxed before the Latvian purge but became strained again afterwards. My dissertation offers the only comprehensive history of national communism in Soviet Latvia. In their attempt to wrench more autonomy from the centre, the Latvian national communists presented the greatest challenge to Moscow from the Soviet Republics in the Khrushchev era.

The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker's improvisational style, both instrumental and vocal, during the early period of his career (1952-1959). Baker's early years were divided into six periods, based on major milestones: The Charlie Parker Groups (1952-1953), The Gerry Mulligan Quartet and Tentette (1952-1953), The Chet Baker Quartets (1953-1956), The European Groups (1955-1956), Quartets, Quintets, and Sextets (1956-1957), and The Riverside Recordings (1958-1959). Improvised lines and chord changes from fifteen solos were transcribed and analyzed by the researcher; melodies of standard songs were transcribed and compared with the original version. The number of solos selected from each period was based on the length of time Baker spent with each particular group and the number of albums recorded. The solos were analyzed in terms of rhythmic interpretation of melodies, intervals utilized, use of nonharmonic tones, use of jazz cliches, embellishment of the melodic line, use of melodic and rhythmic patterns, range, tone quality, articulation, vibrato, and vocal scat syllables. As a result of this analysis, the researcher was able to draw conclusions concerning Baker's improvisational style during the period of the study.

The purpose of this research was to describe the relationship and to compare the programming of major Christian ministries during the first decade of Christian television. A historical perspective was the method used in identifying and explaining the events and activities that constituted Christian television from 1949 to 1959. The results of the research concluded that Christian television began at a time of social trauma, unrest, and confusion in America. Competition for a viewing audience was not a factor. Leading personalities presented themselves as independent thinkers who also saw themselves as "preachers" with a strong desire to succeed. Motivation was provided by a sense of "dominion" that emerged from the Great Awakenings within the churches of America that became a driving force in the first three decades of this century.

'On All Fronts' is a thesis focused on the EOKA insurgency in Cyprus (1955-1959), which aimed at overturning British rule and unifying the island with Greece. EOKA’s campaign was one of several insurgencies carried out against Britain in the two decades following the Second World War. This allowed British policymakers and soldiers to apply lessons learned in other colonies on the island. These lessons included pursuing a political solution in tandem with military operations, unifying command and control, improving intelligence capabilities, and increasing the number of police and soldiers on the ground. Cyprus also presented distinctive challenges. The insurgency was not inspired by communism, like many other anti-colonial struggles, but by right-wing nationalism. The campaign was also intimately linked to the strategic reorganisation undertaken by Britain after 1945. Retreat from India and Palestine increased the importance of the Middle East and Africa, making a presence in Cyprus central to Britain’s post-war plans. Finally, Cypriot demographics meant that the island’s Turkish minority (some eighteen percent) – supported by Ankara – opposed union with Greece. An ethnic-based civil war on the island was possible, as was a regional war between Greece and Turkey. British policy sought to avoid both of these potential conflicts while maintaining the strength of NATO and positive relations with both Athens and Ankara. Utilizing newly declassified papers from the British government, in conjunction with evidence from Greek-Cypriot sources, this study offers insights into the campaign from the perspective of both insurgent and counter-insurgent forces. Parallel to the military analysis, the thesis addresses the political aspect of the insurgency, demonstrating the deep connection in insurgency war between military operations and diplomatic negotiation. While counter-insurgency operations failed to destroy EOKA, the success of government forces created pressure for a diplomatic solution and highlighted the reality that there were insurmountable military and strategic obstacles to union with Greece.

Analiza la narrativa del cincuenta y en particular en el cuento fantástico entre los años 1950-1959, como un período de eclosión del cuento peruano y a su vez, del cuento fantástico. Ello exige una metacrítica de la recepción de lo fantástico, no con la intención de desmerecer los aportes a los estudios sobre la literatura peruana de autores renombrados como Cornejo Polar, Escobar o Carrillo, sino de buscar un diálogo con ellos y comprender sus visiones, pues no se trata de errores de concepto, sino de ciertos vacíos o ausencias. Sin negar el paradigma realista dominante del periodo, se busca rescatar a los autores de cuentos fantásticos (cuya situación es de marginalidad) y proponer un corpus fantástico de la narrativa del cincuenta, que asumimos como coexistente a otras líneas narrativas que son consideradas canónicas: la narrativa andina y el realismo urbano. Señala que el cultivo de lo fantástico por los escritores peruanos del cincuenta no fue eventual ni marginal, sino que fue mucho mayor de lo que las antologías literarias registran. Sostiene que el cuento fantástico peruano está fuertemente vinculado con los procesos de modernización urbano y no constituye una producción ficcional “evasiva” frente al mencionado contexto histórico social, sino que dialoga con éste. Observamos, además, que el cuento fantástico de los años cincuenta utiliza modelos de representación reiterativos, como el bestiario o la presencia del doble. Se establece una narrativa fantástica del cincuenta, en la medida que no hay un consenso respecto de los autores representativos del cuento fantástico. Tomando en cuenta que “lo fantástico” es una categoría amplia, se propone un diálogo con ésta, sin perder de vista la particularidad del cuento peruano. Con esto, buscamos proponer a la narrativa fantástica peruana como un paradigma estético.

La revolution cubaine apparait dans les romans latino-americains soit comme un fait ponctuel, soit comme un long processus. Au-dela de ce clivage, ces romans sont avant tout des oeuvres de vulgarisation qui reduisent la revolution a un nombre limite de jalons et a quelques changements paradigmatiques : le passage vers le communisme, les nationalisations, la reforme agraire, la question raciale, l'exil. La re volution devient une explication totalisatrice, fournissant la these qui structure le discours ideologique des oeuvres et instaure une bipolarite plus ou moins marquee. Concus a partir de la rencontre entre l'ecrivain et la revolution, ces romans sont proches de l'autobiographie, du temoignage ou de la chronique, brouillant les frontieres entre ces genres. La reflexion a propos du role de l'intellectuel est au centre de ces oeuvres, mais elle reste superficielle. Ceci est du au fait que la revolution a ete rapidement codifiee avec une grande precision, de sorte que sa presence dans un roman a instaure un programme narratif auquel les ecrivains se sont en general plies. La reduction des romans a la fonction d'armes de combat leur a paradoxalement ote leur force et leur portee, le roman soi-disant "revolutionnaire" se contentant le plus souvent de revenir a des normes caduques
The cuban revolution is perceived in latin-american novels either as a punctual fact, producing radical changes in a restricted period, or as a process towards perfection or degradation. Apart from this distinction, these novels mainly remain popularizing works ; they reduce the revolution to a limited number of historical ranging-poles and to seve ral paradigmatic changes : the transition to communism, the nationalizations, the land reforme, the racial issue, the exile. The revolution becomes a worldwide explanation, providing the thesis which structures the ideological discourse and establishes a more or less marked bipola rity. These novels are closed to autobiographies, testimonies or chronicles, mixing up all these various genres. The thinker is at the centre of the work, but the reflection on his own role usually remains su perficial. This is due to the fact that the revolution was rapidly codified with extreme precision ; thus, this revolution established a narrative programme which novelists adopted with few changes. Reducing these novels to mere weapons has paradoxically undermined their power and impact, in such a way that, most of the time, the alleged "revolutionary novel" contented itself with coming back to obsolete norms

La present investigació analitza l’evolució que va tenir l’associacionisme durant la dictadura franquista, concretament entre els anys del que es coneix com a Primer Franquisme (1939-1959). Per fer-ho s’ha escollit com a marc geogràfic la comarca del Priorat, un espai que serveix per concretar el nostre àmbit de treball al món rural, a més de tenir certes particularitats en la seva evolució general que la fan susceptible a ser treballada. Estudiar l’associacionisme durant aquell període ens permet, a part de veure les principals característiques de les entitats, fer un treball exhaustiu sobre com va ser l’establiment de la dictadura al món rural, sobretot en els aspectes que fan referència a la repressió i la instauració dels poders locals. Tot això és necessari per veure que l’evolució que tingueren les associacions estigué molt condicionada per les actituds de les autoritats, a més de mostrar la duresa de la repressió franquista en matèria associativa.
La presente investigación analiza la evolución que tuvo el asociacionismo durante la dictadura franquista, concretamente durante los años del llamado Primer Franquismo (1939-1959). Para hacerlo se ha escogido como marco geográfico la comarca del Priorat, un espacio que sirve para concretar nuestro ámbito de trabajo en el mundo rural y que además reúne ciertas particularidades en su evolución general que la hacen susceptible a ser trabajada. Estudiar el asociacionismo durante dicho período nos permite, aparte de ver las principales características de las entidades, hacer un trabajo exhaustivo acerca del establecimiento de la dictadura en el mundo rural, sobretodo en aspectos como la represión y la instauración de los poderes locales. Todo esto es necesario para ver que la evolución que tuvieron las asociaciones estuvo muy condicionada a las actitudes de las autoridades, además de mostrar la dureza de la represión franquista en materia asociativa.
This research analyzes the evolution that associativism had during the Franco dictatorship, specifically between what is known as the first Francoism (1939-1959). To do so, the Priorat region has been chosen as the geographical framework, this region serves to narrow our field of work in rural areas, it also has certain characteristics that make it susceptible to being studied. Studyig the associativism during this period allows us to see the main characteristics of the entities, as well as to do an extensive work on how was the dictatorship established in rural areas, especially in issues related to the repression and the establishment of local authorities. All this is necessary to see that the associations development was closely influenced by the attitudes of the authorities, in addition to showing the hardness of the Franco regime regarding associations.

This thesis considers the position of the British financial sector in the economic strategy of social democracy during the 1960s and 1970s. In doing so it attempts to shed light on a broader question – what caused the collapse of the postwar social democratic project in Britain during the final quarter of the twentieth century? It contends that the social democratic project faced a variety of challenges to its principles, assumptions, and practices in the two decades prior to the election of Margaret Thatcher as a result of changes to the financial system. These challenges offered opportunities for the advance of social democracy beyond the norms established following the Second World War, but the capacity to pursue these was constrained in a number of ways. The emergence of institutional investment, and the breakdown of the postwar banking settlement, undermined the social democratic methods for managing and controlling credit and investment, yet also offered the opportunity to advance the State’s capacity to intervene in the economy. However the ability of the left to renew and rebuild the social democratic economic project along more advanced, interventionist lines was limited by new material constraints which made extensive reform of the financial system and the domestic economy extremely difficult. Structural changes to the international financial system following the breakdown of the Bretton Woods settlement, combined with the severe economic crisis of the 1970s, imposed new limits on the freedom of governments to engage in domestic-focused macroeconomic management. As the methods and techniques of social democratic economic strategy became less effective, the ideal of developing an advanced industrial economy through State coordination faded. In its place a new conception of the British economy was promoted which sought to revive its historic liberal and internationalist role in which the City of London was at its heart.

Resumo: Essa é a primeira pesquisa que tem como tema UNIVERSIDADE E INFÂNClA: RELAÇÕES. As universidades escolhidas, para a realização deste estudo comparativo, foram a Universidade de São Paulo - USP - (campus da capital paulista) e a Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo - PUC-SP - pela riqueza de processos que as diferenciam. As hipóteses deste trabalho são: em primeiro lugar que os processos dramáticos que vêm atravessando a infância brasileira provocassem algumas intervenções da universidade na problemática. Em segundo lugar, tendo como resposta positiva a primeira hipótese, a de que essas relações tivessem como canal mediador a terceira função da universidade: a extensão. Os resultados trazem respostas afirmativas às duas hipóteses, sendo que a pesquisa de campo trouxe também outros mediadores das relações universidade/infância nos campos das assessorias, dos direitos e também nas outras duas funções: o ensino e a pesquisa. Como o campo é vasto, essa pesquisa tem como objetivo levantar cuidadosamente este universo de relações, com ênfase nas atividades em que as crianças estão presentes e indagando qual seria o projeto educacional que vem orientando essas relações. As conclusões vão na direção não de uma linha de interpretação fechada sobre o fenômeno, pois se trata de objeto de investigação científica amplo e novo, portanto, cabe a essa dissertação de mestrado além de mapeá-lo lançar novas questões e pistas para as próximas investigações

This thesis provides a radical re-reading of a'Casey's early work, which sheds new light upon the later plays. The orthodox reading of the socalled 'Dublin Plays' - The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1924) and The Plough and the Stars (1926) - as a triumph in theatrical naturalism that is never matched in the later plays, is here strongly countered. The thesis seeks to demonstrate that far from being dramatic failures, the later plays are fresh and dynamic, a logical and natural progression from the formal and thematic experiments within the early plays. The thesis argues that it is the critical labelling of a'Casey's first plays as 'comedies' or 'realist dramas', which has led to the prevailing view of the last plays as theatrically flawed. This distorting critical prism has resulted in an underplaying of a'Casey's significant contribution to theatrical innovation in the first half of the twentieth century. a'Casey's work has received comparatively little recent critical attention, particularly from British academics. This is clearly no academic accident: a'Casey's marginalisation by scholars is directly linked to the way theatre critics misinterpreted his plays from 1924 onwards, when they received their first performances at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. This study considers the complex dynamics of national and theatre politics that underpin these critical misunderstandings and explores why a'Casey has often been dismissed as a dramatist of character. Discussing plays from The Harvest Festival to The Moon Shines on Kylenamoe, I explore why each play becomes more experimental in form and analyse why a'Casey's critics and public alike gradually become alienated from what they perceive as the new experimental style of his later work. Chapter 1 considers a'Casey's early plays with special reference to the use of space in The Shadow of Gunman. In chapter 2 I examine the use of repetition as a controlling dramatic technique in Juno and the Paycock, chapter 3 explores the re-writing of history as drama through a'Casey's re-dramatisation the Easter Rising in The Plough and the Stars, chapter 4 focuses on a'Casey's engagement with European, especially German, Expressionism in The Silver Tassie; and his experimentation with what we now label 'Absurdist' techniques, as well as dance and song in Within the Gates which provides the subject for chapter 5. The later plays are discussed in chapter 6, where their formal and thematic innovations are considered in relation to the contemporary developments in the cinema and Absurdist drama.

This thesis examines medical approaches to sexual offenders in England between 1919 and 1959. It explores how doctors conceptualised sexual crimes and those who committed them, and how these ideas were implemented in medical and legal settings. It uses medical and criminological texts alongside information about specific court proceedings and offenders' lives to set out two overarching arguments. Firstly, it contends that sexual crime, and the sexual offender, are useful categories for analysis. Examining the medical theories that were put forward about the 'sexual offender', broadly defined, and the ways in which such theories were used, reveals important features of medico-legal thought and practice in relation to sexuality, crime, and 'normal' or healthy behaviour. This broad category has often been overlooked in favour of research into much more specific sexual identities, acts, or offences. Secondly, this thesis argues that clinical theories in relation to sexual offenders were remarkably diverse, but that this diversity and resultant flexibility were key to their usefulness for doctors and the judiciary alike. Doctors did not hold firmly to any single aetiological model, nor claim that all sexual offenders could be cured. The legal and penal systems could deploy medical approaches to justify extremely varied decisions, individualising responses to sexual crime insofar as the legal system would allow. The ways in which medical theories were incorporated and shaped by the legal system, and the flexible nature of these theories themselves, extended the variety of possible outcomes for sexual offenders without fundamentally altering their status. These medical approaches, established over the early to mid-twentieth century in England, laid important foundations for later years. This project opens up new ways of understanding medico-legal theory and practice as they relate to a wide range of human sexual behaviour.

In 1951-52, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation established the Southern Flank, a strategy for the defence of the eastern Mediterranean in the Cold War involving Greece, Italy and Turkey. Among its many aims, the Southern Flank sought to mobilize Greece and Turkey as allies and integrate them into the Western defence system. Throughout 1950s, the alliance developed the Southern Flank and in 1959, it was finally stabilized as fractious Greek-Turkish relations were improved by the temporary settlement over Cyprus. These events are the focus of this thesis. It examines, among other things, the initial negotiations of 1951-52, the Southern Flank‟s structure and function and relative value in NATO‟s overall policy, and its response to the challenges of the eastern Mediterranean in the early Cold War. It explores not only the military aspects of the Southern Flank (e.g. the establishment of its headquarters and NATO‟s command structure; the special role of each member state; military planning and the lack of unity in command) but also the more controversial political aspects. Hence, it analyses the admission of Greece and Turkey to NATO, the short-lived military cooperation between these states and Yugoslavia during 1953-55 and the deterioration in Greek-Turkish relations from 1955 due to Cyprus. It also focuses on the part played by other major members of the alliance, principally the United States and Britain, in Southern Flank politics and strategy. Thus, it considers how the US and UK viewed the power balance between the three Southern Flank members and how the Americans sought to influence affairs through financial, military and technical assistance, including the construction of US bases in Greece and Turkey. More generally, the thesis also assesses the threat posed to the Southern Flank at various points by rising tensions in the Middle East.

This dissertdtion examines British Foreign Policy toward the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman, 1954-1959. The theoretical framework is clientelism. The patron-client relationship develops over a lengthy period. The Anglo-Omani relationship was uninterrupted from the 1600s through the subject period. and British efforts to later in Kuwait achieve included their the interests in establishment India and maintenance of the Al Bu Said family as Oman's hereditary monarchs. Britain signed anti-slave trade treaties with Oman in the nineteenth century to eliminate it as a regional economic threat; and separated the wealthy Zanzibar dominions from the control of Muscat's leadership. This "divide-and-rule" policy resulted in both Oman and Zanzibar becoming dependent on Britain. The 1913-1920 disturbance between the Sultan and shaikhs from the country's interior led to the British mediated Agreement of ai-Sib. The record shows that the events were different than what had been portrayed in various memoirs. Said ibn Taimur. the British educated Sultan, wanted political reunification of the interior with the coastal plains under his leadership. This was accomplished by the Sultan's forces with minimal opposition when the Imam died in 1954. The rebel leadership returned in 1956 with Saudi Arabian trained and armed troops. The rebels were defeated but the Sultan needed British military support. Britain's disproportionate response to the limited and localized opposition necessitated the rapid cover-up of damage to the interior's vii lages. The patron-client relationship strained almost to the breaking point. The British wanted to "cover-up" the damage they had wrought; the Sultan wanted to enhance his military capacity and to withdraw from the protective but overbearing relationship with Great Britain. The official records for the period are used extensively. For the first time, an academic work that discusses the events of the last half of the 1950's does not rely on personal interviews.

Syftet med denna studie är att studera genusframställningen i skolsångböcker under tidsperioden 1959-1989. Genom textanalys av sångboksserien Sjung Svenska Folk ska skillnader mellan hur de båda könen framställs påvisas. I studien görs detta utifrån samhällets förväntningar på manliga och kvinnliga egenskaper, yrkesutövning samt maktförhållandet mellan könen. Skolsångböcker har historiskt sett haft en viktig betydelse i förmedlandet av värderingar och i formandet av framtidens samhällsmedborgare. Utifrån analys av sångtexter från fyra olika decennier kan en tydlig skillnad observeras i hur kön framställts. Analysen i studien utgår från tre olika analytiska teman; yttre egenskaper, yrkesutövning och sysslor, samt maktförhållande. Slutsatsen som kan göras utifrån genomförd studie är att Sjung svenska folks sångtexter tydligt är förmedlare av samhällets förväntningar på män och kvinnor, en tydlig genusframställning görs i Sjung svenska folk. Denna framställning medför en reproduktion av genus i form av förväntningar på ett visst köns yttre egenskaper, yrkesutövning och sysslor samt maktförhållandet gentemot det andra könet under respektive decennium. Dock har intressanta avvikelser iakttagits för hur genusframställning skett under de fyra decennierna. Denna avvikelse kan bland annat härledas till 70-talet och framåt.

A tese de Doutorado em questão analisa o relacionamento, as experiências e os intercâmbios ocorridos entre profissionais da arquitetura brasileiros e americanos (ou imigrantes na América do Norte) em um período que se estende desde o reconhecimento da arquitetura moderna brasileira no âmbito internacional, entre o final dos anos 1930 e início dos quarenta, atravessando o segundo pós-guerra até o início dos anos 1960. Inúmeras foram as trocas entre os dois países, muitas vezes desmerecidas em detrimento daquelas ocorridas com o continente europeu, e que neste trabalho procuramos dar espaço e buscar seu entendimento. De modo que o foco da pesquisa foi demonstrar que outras frentes de diálogo se consolidaram, justamente quando a arquitetura moderna que se fazia no Brasil passava, também, a dialogar internacionalmente, e, dentro deste panorama, os Estados Unidos da América, novo centro cultural do mundo, teve um papel essencial. Partindo do pressuposto que o relacionamento entre o Brasil e os Estados Unidos foi decisivo no processo, na divulgação e no fortalecimento do modernismo brasileiro em âmbito internacional, o objetivo do trabalho foi compreender, através da identificação dos personagens e da análise das experiências e trocas entre os dois países, como estes fatos incidiram no campo arquitetônico brasileiro. O tema se desenvolveu a partir de uma visão síntese da interação entre a historiografia do movimento moderno e o contexto histórico e cultural em que os profissionais arquitetos se inseriam naquele preciso momento histórico.
The doctoral thesis examines the relationship in question, the experiences and professional exchanges occurred between the Brazilian and American architects (or immigrants in North America) in a period that extends from the recognition of Brazilian modern architecture at the international level, between late 1930s and early forties, through the second post-war until the early 1960s. Many were the exchanges between the two countries, often undeserved in detriment of those that occurred with the European continent, and in this paper we give space and seek their understanding. So the focus of the research was to demonstrate that other fronts of dialogue have been consolidated, just as the modern architecture that was done in Brazil was also beginning to dialogue internationally, and within this framework, the United States of America, new cultural center of the world, played a key role. Assuming that the relationship between Brazil and the United States was instrumental in the process, dissemination and strengthening of Brazilian modernism at the international level, the objective of the work was to understand, through the identification of the characters and analysis of the experiences and exchanges between the two countries, how these events have focused on the Brazilian architectural field. The theme was developed from a synthetic view of the interaction between the historiography of the modern movement and the historical and cultural context in which professional architects were inserted at that precise moment in history.

Glauber Rocha, cineasta e um dos principais membros do Cinema Novo brasileiro, se tornou internacionalmente conhecido por sua cinegrafia marcada pela crítica social e por seus fins político-didáticos. Sua atuação como crítico de cinema e sua participação nos debates em torno das políticas públicas de fomento à indústria cinematográfica no Brasil lhe renderiam o título de líder do movimento cinemanovista e o afirmariam, ao longo dos anos sessenta e setenta, como um dos artistas-intelectuais de maior expressão política do país.
This study part of the analysis of interviews, articles and other texts written by Glauber de Andrade Rocha between 1959 and 1979, to understand the development trajectory of the Brazilian cinema and its relations with the national politics and economics.Glauber Rocha, filmmaker and one of the main members of the Brazilian Cinema Novo, became internationally known for his cinematography marked by social criticism and its didactic political purposes. His performance as film critic and his participation in debates on public policies to promote the film industry in Brazil, especially him the title 'leader' of the Cinema Novo and the set throughout the sixties and seventies, as one of the artists-intellectuals of the country's largest political expression.
