The body swap comedy is a privileged genre for investigating norms related to gender and sexuality in popular culture. This article explores these norms through the close analysis of the film Se eu fosse você (Daniel Filho, 2006), using Mikhail Bakhtin’s thesis on the carnivalesque and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity. Despite the film’s overall strong conservative framework, it is argued that just as revealing as what the film tries to regulate is what it exposes: double standards, failures in the heteronormative matrix, and disruptive sex acts and gendered behavior.

The Apocalyptic genre is one genre that is difficult to understand because of its long intricacies and requires accuracy. One reason for the difficulty in interpreting the apocalyptic genre is the use of symbols that are not uncommon for today's readers. The use of symbols is very close to the speaker and, the first reader. The Book of Daniel is identical to the many uses of the symbolic language of the two Apocalyptic genre Books in the Bible. Readers increasingly need to be careful and careful when classifying symbol languages because there are differences in the use of symbols and language of descriptions. This paper was prepared by searching the literature with a qualitative approach. With the support of data from journal articles and cognate books, the research achieved the expected goals. The discussion begins by describing the apocalyptic genre based on literal facts. Then examine the uses of symbols, images, and others and the need for the interpreter's humility when trying to interpret this genre, especially in the use of symbolic language. The results show that many parts can be understood by following the rules of interpretation of the apocalyptic genre in the use of symbolic language. But some parts are precisely still a mystery to the reader as sealing of their meaning.

This is the first of two articles exploring recent research on the book of Daniel. The focus of Part 1 is the court tale narratives of Daniel 1—6, with particular attention to genre identification, sociological and ideological viewpoints, and textual and language issues. Other topics of interest are represented in the bibliography, which identifies important publications since 1993. Foundational works published prior to 1993 are also included. Historical-critical analysis of Daniel 1—6 has furthered understanding of important topics such as the nature of court tale literature and the context of conquest, exile and empire in the ancient Near East, and how those constructs affect the biblical writings. New explorations of Daniel 1—6 that focus on literary, multi-critical and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of this book suggest interesting answers to perennial debates over issues such as the language, genre and ideology of these court tales, and are a main focus of this survey article. Part 2 will explore the apocalyptic material of Daniel 7—12, including discussion of topics such as the Son of Man and the nature of vision material in the Hebrew Bible.

Abstract This article explores the uses of music, voice, and sound in Daniels’ 2016 film Swiss Army Man (SAM)—a story about a friendship between a stranded, suicidal loner (Paul Dano) and a farting, talking corpse (Daniel Radcliffe). We argue that the film's unique play between nondiegetic and diegetic sound, musical references to popular culture, and privileging of bodily noise (particularly farting) generate a distinctive soundscape that adds new dimensions to SAM's major themes of loneliness and nostalgia. This study draws upon scholarship in musicology, film studies, social history, and queer studies to better define the sonic techniques that the directors and composers employ. In doing so, it also helps us locate how sound articulates the film's genre, its construction of masculinity, and the queerness of the two protagonists’ relationship. Our goal is to provide insight into a film in which farting equals music, and meaning is made through colliding dualities: sacredness vs. vulgarity, a hyperbody that is both dead and alive, heterosexual yearning vs. homoromantic bonding, and even comedy vs. tragedy.

Within the context of the film industry of the first peronist period (1946-1955) crime films established themselves as a means to disseminate the dominant ideology. Some of the characteristics of this genre were used to leave proof of the pre-eminence of the State as a safeguard of the status quo. However, Deshonra (1952) resorts in its structure to visual features that could be interpreted as a veiled criticism to the very ideology it aims to divulge. The crime film genre, from its constitutive proposals and its supposed ideological rigidity in a political framework such as Peronism, may grant some areas of ambiguity.

The construction of traditional gender roles has affected the understanding of being feminine and masculine. This understanding seems to influence gender performance in the film Mrs. Doubtfire. This onehourandfiftysevenminute film was directed by Chris Columbus. This study is conducted to examine how gender performativity is illustrated in the film and what ideology lies within the film. Queer theory, especially gender performativity by Judith Butler is used as the framework of the study. The study is done by observing and analysing chosen scenes from the film focusing on the performance of Daniel Hillard as Euphegenia Doubtfire. Narrative aspect of the film is not only the main concern; the nonnarrative is also part of the analysis especially on costume, makeup, performance and color. The main finding of this study is this film in one hand celebrates traditional gender roles but on the other hand promotes gender as performance. Femininity is pictured as fluid. Therefore, it is also a performativity. The contestation between those two opposing ideas is smoothly wrapped through amusing film such as Mrs. Doubtfire. KataKata Kunci: konstruksi gender; performativitas gende; teori queer

When Daniel Miller asked ‘Why some things matter?’, it became critical to question why they matter differently for various genders. This paper is an attempt to analyze how ‘orientations’ around objects play out differently for the female gender in Sarah Pink’s (2004) Home Truths: Gender, Domestic and Everyday Life. The domestic space of research informants in England and Spain is taken up to explore not only how orientations are different for the female genders, but how they also go on to reinforce gender roles. Thus works of foundational thing theorists like Bill Brown, Bruno Latour and Daniel Miller’s ideas of subject-object relations are critiqued and revealed to be inadequate until gender is factored in. Additionally, the paper also reveals how bodies then purposely attempt to break out of gender roles by molding their subject-object relations. Ultimately, things end up shaping our mind more than we can fathom.

Abstract Nebuchadnezzar II sacked Jerusalem and destroyed its temple. Yet he emerges in Daniel 1-4 as a compelling and sometimes sympathetic hero-villain. Drawing upon the concept of the story-collection, this article considers the implications of this genre for character formation, examines the further thematic means by which Nebuchadnezzar’s sympathetic characterization is generated in the book of Daniel, and explains his character in terms that make his often contradictory nature understandable across the text of the book. This article argues that Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams reflect deep-seated anxieties about his own mortality and relates these anxieties about death and time to Daniel’s broader themes of time, mortality, and exile. It suggests an analogy between the death of the self and the death of one’s state, and suggests that Nebuchadnezzar’s portrayal in Daniel has a role to play in our understanding of Daniel as a reflection upon life in exile.

AbstractThe concern of this article will be with the books of Ruth, Esther, Daniel, Judith, and Tobit. I would argue that we might profitably compare these five books with regard to themes running throughout them. All evidence similarities in how they portray power relationships, alienation and otherness, theology and divine activity, gender categories, and how their protagonists attain ultimate success. Though this set does not represent a collection of works traditionally grouped together in biblical studies,1 find, nonetheless, that these five literary documents evidence ample similarities that we may beneficially consider how they relate to one another. First and most obvious is that each of these books is a free-standing work which is named by a single character, and thus the action is (at least initially) focused around this individual. They are all most likely compositions of the same general time period in Jewish history, during the Second Temple period. All are narrative in structure and brief in length, and might be seen as representatives of a short story genre.2 In all of them we find continuations and reworkings of ideas from the Torah and the Prophets.3 Also, they all function as diaspora narratives; that is, addressing issues that Jews would have been facing in the diaspora. Esther, Daniel, and Tobit are written directly about diaspora situations. Ruth and Judith, though set within in the geographical boundaries of Judah, likewise deal with the question of the relationship between Israelites and other peoples and how to successfully live with other cultures.

ABSTRACT This essay examines the relationship between George Eliot's representation of the Jewish body in Daniel Deronda and Francis Galton's photographic race-science. It argues that, for both Eliot and Galton, Jewish racial identity is, paradoxically, defined by a corporeal evacuation and abstraction——that is, by a ghostly disembodiment. While Eliot's representation of Deronda has traditionally been read as a radical departure from the realism that Eliot was so instrumental in defining, in a sense, Daniel Deronda represents a thorough adaptation to photographic technology and scientic realism.

AbstractIn this article I examine the moral dimensions of gender-affirmation. I argue that the moral value of gender-affirmation is rooted in what Iris Murdoch called loving attention. Loving attention is central to the moral value of gender-affirmation because such affirmation is otherwise too fragile or insincere to have such value. Moral reasons to engage in acts that gender-affirm derive from the commitment to give and express loving attention to trans people as a way of challenging their marginalization. In the latter part of the article, I will discuss how my arguments bear on recent arguments by Robin Dembroff and Daniel Wodak on the use of gender-neutral language (Dembroff and Wodak 2018). They argue that we have a duty not to use gender-specific pronouns for anyone. Their conclusion turns, in part, on a rejection of gender-affirmation as a moral duty. The value of gender-affirmation, rooted in our moral perception of trans people, should make us skeptical of this conclusion, in favor of a more nuanced and pluralistic approach to the ethics of gendering.

The article raises the question of the interaction of ancient Russian scribes and individual samples of the epistolary genre. A connection is established between the message of Fedor Karpov to Metropolitan Daniil and the scribe “The beginning of the messages...”, created, like the mentioned message, in the 16th century. Both the message and the scribe actualize the intention of business writing, teaching message and secular friendly writing. The first introduces a respectful and complementary tone (the addressee is lower than the addressee), the second — the educational one (the addressee is higher than the addressee), the third is actually friendly (they are “equal”). This allows Fedor Karpov to flexibly conduct an epistolary conversation with the correspondent: to attract him to himself, to inspire confidence, then, already having this trust, contrast his point of view with his own and present it as authoritative, finally, boldly affirm the “equivalence” of both points of view. This is a completely secular, humanistic position inherent to Fedor Karpov, a secular man, a diplomat, one of the early Russian Europeans. He begins to speak with Metropolitan Daniel in the language familiar to Metropolitan Daniel, in the traditions of ancient Russian epistolary communication: he self-abases and exalts his interlocutor, introduces the antithesis “addressee-sinner / addressee-righteous”. His correspondent is characterized as was done in the scribbler “The beginning of the messages...” through his high position, wisdom, enlightenment, purity and beauty of the soul, metaphors of flowering, fragrance and light. Myself — by the principle of contrast. Introduces, like the author of the scribe, the traditional medieval motif of sailing and the image of the ship, raises the question of “helmsman”. But if in the scribe, which focuses mainly on the epistolary communication of the subordinate with the boss and the establishment of relations, promotion on the career ladder, the boss was given the honorary role of «helmsman», then in the message of Fedor Karpov the aforementioned motive and image are reinterpreted in a secular way. The point is that for monks the path lies to the heavenly harbor and “helmsman” is Christ, while the secular man “swims” in the earthly world and hardly needs a “helmsman”, he chooses the path. Supporting his judgments with quotes from the Holy Scriptures (strictly selected and arranged in the text, of course, exactly as the author needs it), Fedor Karpov remains in the Old Russian tradition, approved by the scribe for the epistolary genre. But he is not limited to this tradition. Quotes from ancient literature are adjacent to quotes from the Holy Scriptures in the epistle to Metropolitan Daniel, and the judgment of Aristotle turns out to be much more authentic for Fedor Karpov than, say, the apostle Paul. Thus, from a sphere close to the addressee, the author transfers epistolary communication into his sphere. This secular quotation plan was completely absent from the scribe, but the scribe, offering users, in accordance with the title, only the “beginning” of the messages, provided great opportunities for experimentation. Fedor Karpov, to whom the European individual beginning was so dear, could not help but use them. Based on the scribe, he created, on the one hand, a modern, flawlessly “correct” letter written “according to the rules of rhetoric”, as befits an educated person, and on the other hand, a letter that is very independent, very personal, reflecting his personality. However, there is a likelihood of feedback: perhaps the scribe did not form the basis of the creative experiment of Fedor Karpov, but the epistolary text of Karpov formed the basis of the scribe.

The article deals with the problem of functional and genre belonging of the "Word of Daniel the Immured", and considers the problem of dating the work. We reveal that the semantic "impenetrability" of the "Word" is connected, first, with the phenomenon of the text of the transition period, which determines the ideological and everyday (biographical) concept. It is shown that the "Word" is a Manifesto of autocracy, representing the "expressed" stereotype of behavior, which destroys the boundaries of the previous canons both in genre and stylistic terms, since the synthetic worldview discrediting the usual mental positions, no longer works at the level of the norm, it is an object of parody (new) and at the same time selectively traditional poetics. In this connection, the "Word" is unusual for any listener who does not live in that era, the era of the 12th century – the time of tectonic cultural and historical shifts, when old traditions die, and new ones are just emerging. This fluid (amorphous) process is reflected in the phenomenon of "Word of Daniel the Immured", presented as a mystery for the modern researcher.

Influential American studies scholars of the mid-twentieth century, such as R. W. B. Lewis, Henry Nash Smith, and Leslie A. Fiedler, focussed attention on a mythic American character, the frontiersman who penetrates the wilderness. These critics provided analyses of figures such as Daniel Boone and his fictional counterpart, Natty Bumppo, and discussed the power the romanticized western frontier had over the American imagination. Their observations were accurate, as far as they went. However, these critics did not acknowledge the many narratives in which a female character conquers the frontier. The assumption seemed to be that the literary female figure belonged in the parlor with her sewing basket and not in the forest with her weapon. Unfortunately, this incomplete assessment of the frontier adventure genre is still in evidence today. In this essay, I work towards the development of a more complete understanding of the American frontier story and point out that, even in the iconic John Filson/John Trumbull Boone tale, we find a mini-narrative involving a female hero who triumphs over the “savage” forces of the wilderness. This female figure became a cultural archetype, and similar versions of her story were repeated in countless captivity and western adventure anthologies, almanacs, and the like for the next seventy years. The popularity of this frontier narrative featuring a strong, violent female figure suggests that readers were accepting of the idea of an active, aggressive woman, at least while she was contending with chaotic forces in the wilderness. The popularity of this kind of narrative also undercuts the traditional gender paradigm (the nurturing passive female versus the active aggressive male) too often imposed by scholars on antebellum American letters and culture.

AbstractAlthough Jewish novellas (Esther, Daniel, Tobit, Judith, and Joseph and Aseneth) have received more attention recently as a distinct genre within ancient Jewish literature, their relation to Greek and Roman novels is still debated. This article argues that, although some of the Jewish novellas arise earlier, they should be considered part of the same broad category of novelistic literature. The rich research on the cultural context of Greek and Roman novels applies to the Jewish as well. But a further question is also explored: if the Jewish texts were originally considered fictional, how did they come to be considered biblical and historical? Two suggestions are proposed: the protagonists of the narratives first came to be revered as heroes of the faith aside from the texts, and the rise of “biblical history” required the use of Esther and Daniel to fill in the gaps in the chronology.

The present article offers an analysis of the use of symbolism in the books of Daniel and Revelation. Thus, the first section of the study evaluates the degree of thematic unity which may be said to exist between the two books (given their common literary genre). Secondly, the article explores the different roles which symbolism plays within the two books. Finally, a concluding section brings together the findings of the study, indicating that despite the complex symbolism of Daniel and Revelation, it is plausible to speak of these books (individually and together) as having a unifying message which could be described as the victory of good over evil or, more precisely, the sovereignty of God in a world where evil seems to prevail. At the same time, this unifying message can take a wide variety of distinctive meanings for specific groups and for specific settings.

Rachel Kravetz, “The Radiant Tableaux of Daniel Deronda” (pp. 68–93) This essay argues that the ekphrastic images in Daniel Deronda (1876) mark a shift in George Eliot’s thought away from a historical to a prophetic national mode. Taking as a point of departure the critical commonplace that Eliot’s novel has two largely separate spheres, a degenerate English world and a visionary Jewish realm, I show that each has a painterly model. The grounds of stately English homes represent a false Arcadia in passages that allude to the genre of landscape known as “ideal.” While the glowing river landscapes that frame Jewish characters conjure the extrasensory, they have a material correlative in the paintings of J.M.W. Turner. In my reading, these vivid scenes comprise a response to the vexed status of the nation that issues from philosophical empiricism. The nation is too large a body to be perceived directly or depicted fully in fiction. Eliot’s sunset landscapes form a locus for propositions about how the mind may reach beyond experience. With images of arched bridges, she transmutes an empiricist metaphor for the mental process of prediction through inference into a symbol for prophecy. The gold skies light up the distance, directing the reader to conceive a national ideal Eliot cannot locate or provide: ultimately, both empiricism and idealism prove insufficient to her fictional project, nonetheless brilliant, of national reanimation.

In Setting Limits, Daniel Callahan advances the provocative thesis that age be a limiting factor in decisions to allocate certain kinds of health services to the elderly. However, when one looks at available data, one discovers that there are many more elderly women than there are elderly men, and these older women are poorer, more apt to live alone, and less likely to have informal social and personal supports than their male counterparts. Older women, therefore, will make the heaviest demand on health care resources. If age were to become a limiting factor, as Dr. Callahan sug-gests it should, the limits that will be set are limits that will affect women more dras” tically than they affect men. This review essay examines the implications of Callahan's thesis for elderly women.

This article is the concluding part in a series of articles on “Bel and the dragon”. These articles are an investigation into the Greek editor’s/author’s use of body, space, narrative and genre in creating a new reality regarding the Jewish deity. A spatial analysis is used. It suggests that the episodes of “Bel and the dragon”, as well as each of the chapters of Greek Daniel, should be read in a reciprocal relationship with each other. First, such an analysis indicates that the smaller episodes and chapters are part of a larger clash of deities. Second, it shows that the editor/author utilises the different events in the chapters of Greek Daniel to create a new worldview. In this new worldview the God of Israel is an almighty deity while other deities that are revered are false, and not real, living gods. In his own way the editor/author contributes to the way in which Jews regarded their God within the reality of the diaspora.

Taking its cue from Lev Tolstoi's claim, in “A Few Words Apropos of the BookWar and Peace,” that the Russian novel is a “deviation from European form,” this article investigates deviance as a formal and thematic aspect of the Russian novel. Concentrating on Mikhail Chulkov'sThe Comely Cookas an early exemplar of the Russian novel form, and locating its deviance against the backdrop of Daniel Defoe'sMoll Flanders(the English novel with which it is most frequently paired), I examine both formal matters and the texts' thematic and imaginative clusters. These questions of commercialism, capital, and the role of money; of gender difference, the regulation of sexuality and pleasure, and bodily life generally; of Oedipal family arrangements and communal organization; and of repetition and the production of the new are especially at stake in investigating issues of normativity and abnormality, or regularity and deformity, as they are given shape in the works. In particular, this article concentrates on the police as a multivalent literary, and particularly novelistic, construct to present the Russian novel as a distinctively unpoliced and unregulated genre whose lawlessness is brought into relief by the culture of discipline and legality that pervades Defoe's work.

This article puts the research and writing of UCLA psychology professor Robert J. Stoller in conversation with Daniel Patrick Moynihan's famous essay “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action” to highlight the racial and colonial logics of university-based gender clinics and their significance for transsexual life. The author provides examples of patients of color who made their way to these gender clinics through institutions of psychiatric detention or the criminal justice system. The article attempts to demonstrate three points: (1) gender-clinic patients were not all white and middle class, and many of them did not come to the gender clinics voluntarily; (2) understanding the prolonged, multigenerational temporality of Stoller's theory of transsexual etiology makes clear the connections between transsexual medicine, evolutionary and eugenic theory, and racial science; and (3) Stoller's theory of transsexual etiology emerges alongside essays like Moynihan's reveals the shared genealogy of US sexology and Jim Crow.

This essay considers the stories of Blaccucini and Ángel Daniel, two Black transgender drag performers from Cuba, and dwells on the relationship they imagine between their work as performers and their subjectivities as trans people. The author situates these narratives within queer Cuban and Caribbean studies, noticing the ways they push back against renderings of gender and sexuality as inherently distinct categories. Instead, for these artist-thinkers, trans subjectivity is informed by various experiences related to gender, sexuality, race, class, and geography. The essay offers some possibilities for greater nuance in accounts of sexual subjectivity in Cuba and the Caribbean and locates the stakes of these discussions in broader transnational LGBT rights discourses.

Representations of ‘cross-gender’ Journey motif means the marked difference(s) in ‘Cross-Gender’ experiences and challenges in diasporic milieu. This paper focused on portraying how the patriarchal society in which both male and female genders find themselves tends to be the ultimate tool defining and creating in their psyche what strength and weakness is, as such, the differences in their journeys. This is to map psychosocial ‘cross-gender’ journeys, and how these journeys influence their mental and physical well-being. This paper concluded with the discovery that, while a male gender returns home to rediscover the unhomely home, the female gender is not given the chance. Hers is rather redirected, lest she remain unmarried, single, or termed promiscuous.

Stereotypes has been ingrained in the society for a very long time. According to Daniel Katz and Kenneth Braly (1933), stereotyping guides to racial discrimination just after people respond to a particular group and assign the characteristic of the group emotionally. Cultural expectations have dominated societies around the world, and become an obstacle to women, including in career. However, they start to break down the barriers to show how traditional gender roles belong in the past. Therefore, in college majors, they started to enter the male-dominated majors. This research aims to find out what cultural values do the female students believe related to gender roles and its relationship with their chosen major and career. The theory that will be used is gender roles. A qualitative approach will be used by interviewing and collecting all the data from the students who are majoring in Informatics Engineering and Business Information System (SIB) in Petra Christian University. Keywords: gender roles, non-traditional career, male-dominated majors, education, career choice
