To study the vibration reduction performance of damped rail, we take the standard rail and labyrinth constrained damped rail as the study target. By testing the vibration performance of both standard rail and labyrinth constrained damped rail in an anechoic room, we use the time-domain analysis to study the vibration changes with time passing. The results showed that: the labyrinth constrained damped rail vibration can effectively reduce the vibration amplitude and duration. Under the radial impact load, compared to the standard rail, vibration acceleration attenuation of the labyrinth constrained damped rail is 5% −19%, time of vibration and attenuation greater than 94%; under the axial impact load, compared to the standard rail, vibration acceleration attenuation of the labyrinth constrained damped rail is 9% −21%, time of vibration and attenuation greater than 92%. The results have provided an experimental basis for the design of new constrained damped rail.

An accurate knowledge of the sound field distribution inside a room is required to identify and optimally locate corrective measures for room acoustics. However, the spatial recovery of the sound field would result in an impractically high number of microphones in the room. Fortunately, at low frequencies, the possibility to rely on a sparse description of sound fields can help reduce the total number of measurement points without affecting the accuracy of the reconstruction. In this paper, the use of Greedy algorithm and Global curve-fitting techniques are proposed, in order to first recover the modal parameters of the room, and then to reconstruct the entire enclosed sound field at low frequencies, using a reasonably low set of measurements. First, numerical investigations are conducted on a non-rectangular room configuration, with different acoustic properties, in order to analyze various aspects of the reconstruction frameworks such as accuracy and robustness. The model is then validated with an experimental study in an actual reverberation chamber. The study yields promising results in which the enclosed sound field can be faithfully reconstructed using a practically feasible number of microphones, even in complex-shaped and damped rooms.

Classic statistical energy analysis mainly deals with the energy transmission of system with relatively low damping. With the application of passive damping treat- ments, one of the fundamental assumptions in SEA, i.e., a diffused field, tends to fail. The energy attenuation along transmission path becomes so significant that there may exist large energy level difference within one structural component. In light of this, this study proposes to use a hybrid ray-tracing-SEA method to predict the acoustic transmission in heavily damped system. Heavily damped structural compo- nents are treated as â–œcoupling elementsâ–? instead of normal â–œsubsystems.â–? The en- ergy transmission from one structural element to a connected structural element through the edge can be represented by using certain number of point sources and assuming each point source radiates certain number of acoustic rays. By tracing the travelling history of each ray, the energy attenuation along the travelling path can be achieved. With the information of energy input and energy attenuation, the equivalent coupling loss factors can be computed. By rebuilding a hybrid ray- tracing-SEA model, the energy level differences between different subsystems can be determined. Numerical validation of the ray tracing algorithm is conducted by comparing the calculated coupling loss factor with normal SEA method. Numerical study of a one-room system is given. The room is assumed to consist of six homoge- neous concrete plates and the analysis assumes no coupling between in-plan and out- plane waves. Comparisons between classic and hybrid method show that when a small number of the structural components are heavily damped, classic SEA gives similar results with the hybrid method because the prediction errors tend to cancel with each other and the transmission is dominated by paths that are not damped. With the increasing number of damped elements, SEA tends to underestimate the energy level difference.

An active noise control device called active noise absorber or ANA, which is based upon damped, resonant filters is developed and demonstrated. It is similar to structural positive position feedback (PPF) control, with two exceptions: (1) Acoustic transducers (microphone and speaker) cannot be truly collocated, and (2) the acoustic actuator (loudspeaker) has significant dynamics. The speaker dynamics can affect performance and stability and must be compensated. While acoustic modal control approaches are typically not sought, there are a number of applications where controlling a few room modes is adequate. A model of a duct with speakers at each end is developed and used to demonstrate the control method, including the impact of the speaker dynamics. An all-pass filter is used to provide phase compensation and improve controller performance and permits the control of nonminimum phase plants. A companion experimental study validated the simulation results and demonstrated nearly 8 dB of control in the first duct mode. A multi-modal control example was also demonstrated producing an average of 3 dB of control in the first four duct modes.

The characterization of Room Impulse Responses (RIR) over an extended region in a room by means of measurements requires dense spatial with many microphones. This can often become intractable and time consuming in practice. Well established reconstruction methods such as plane wave regression show that the sound field in a room can be reconstructed from sparsely distributed measurements. However, these reconstructions usually rely on assuming physical sparsity (i.e. few waves compose the sound field) or trait in the measured sound field, making the models less generalizable and problem specific. In this paper we introduce a method to reconstruct a sound field in an enclosure with the use of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), which s new variants of the data distributions that it is trained upon. The goal of the proposed GAN model is to estimate the underlying distribution of plane waves in any source free region, and map these distributions from a stochastic, latent representation. A GAN is trained on a large number of synthesized sound fields represented by a random wave field and then tested on both simulated and real data sets, of lightly damped and reverberant rooms.

The paper introduces a method for determining the frequency response of microphones using a broadband excitation signal. The method is based on time deiay spectrometry and uses the recursive filter of the Goertzel algorithm and additional sliding complex weighted averaging under conditions burdened by sound reverberation. A combination of field and pressure measurements was used to minimize the effect of reflections during measurements. Relying on the algorithm, we developed software for post-processing the measurement results when determining the frequency response of microphones in an unmuffled laboratory room. Furthermore, we assembled a research measuring complex and experimentally tested the developed method and software determining the methodical error in the frequency response of microphones using a broadband excitation signal. The developed method and software are recommended for determining the frequency response of measuring microphones by the field in unmuffled reverberating laboratory rooms without auxiliary equipment, such as a damped chamber and a small-volume chamber, provided the practical recommendations given in the research are taken into consideration

Abstract This paper presents the results of our experiment, which consisted in measurement of the shielding effectiveness of a camera enclosure that was designed and constructed in order to increase the susceptibility of a camera against external electromagnetic fields. All activities, from defining of requirements to final design and measurements, were performed in the Laboratory of Electromagnetic Compatibility at the Faculty of Applied Informatics of Tomas Bata University in Zlín. The hereby described approach allowed to utilize standardized laboratory equipment that is normally used for device susceptibility test to radiated electric field. The measurement was made inside a semi-anechoic room additionally damped by absorbers placed on its floor. When configuring the experiment, relevant EMC standards EN 55016 and EN 61000-4-3 were considered. Although the uncertainty tolerances, allowed by the relevant standards, were quite high for measurements in such rooms, the results obtained by the experiment matched the theoretical expectations quite satisfactorily.

Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) is a well-known method to analyze the flow of acoustic and vibration energy in a complex structure. The structure is divided into subsystems where the energy in each of the subsystem is assumed to be reverberant. This study investigates the application of SEA model in a 'damped' acoustic space where the direct field component from the sound source dominates the total sound field rather than a diffuse field in a reverberant space which the SEA model assumption is based on. A measurement was conducted in a scaled room divided into two acoustic spaces separated by a partition with an opening. Absorbent materials were installed on the room walls and the power injection technique was implemented to obtain the coupling loss factor (CLF) of the system. It is found that correction of the direct field component from the subsystem energy improves the prediction of the CLF of the system.

Low frequency sound and vibration affects the performance and use of electron microscopes, by disturbing the stability and resolution of the specimen's video image. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) addition was proposed to an existing research suite that had three scanning electron microscopes (SEM). The TEM, which is very heavy, rather tall and has a high center of gravity, is very sensitive to floor vibrations. This case study presents sources of disturbing vibration with spectrum measurements. The designs of the microscope room and an actively damped, pneumatic vibration isolation system are discussed. Post-installation vibration measurement results to validate performance are presented in spectral analysis charts versus criteria. Drawings and photographs illustrate the installation.

В роботі описується та аналізується інформація що до геометрії на плану приміщення домашнього кінотеатру, умов створення задовільного часу реверберації. Були проаналізовані дві концепції приміщень для домашнього кінотеатру. Заглушене приміщення являє собою приміщення з малим значенням часу реверберації, відповідно, більш детальним підбором звукопоглинаючих матеріалів та високим показником звукоізоляції. Приміщення з акустичним полем залу володіє більшим значенням часу реверберації, задовільним значенням сумарного рівню шуму порівняно з допустим рівнем сумарного шуму у суспільних закладах в нічний час та простим набором звукопоглинальних матеріалів.
The work aims to calculate the acoustic design of a damped room and a room with an acoustic field of the hall, which intended for a home theatre. The paper describes and analyses information on the geometry of the layout of the home theatre room, the conditions for creating a satisfactory reverberation time. Two home theatre room concepts were analyzed. A damped room is a room with a short reverberation time, respectively, a more detailed selection of sound-absorbing materials, and a high rate of sound insulation. The room with the acoustic field of the hall has a high value of the reverberation time, a satisfactory value of the total noise level compared to the admissible level of total noise in public institutions at night, and a simple set of sound-absorbing materials.

This project focuses on an ideal solution for restoring the roof of Notre-Dame in Paris, which burned down together with its spire on April 15, 2019. The main motive behind the design was to create a quiet space that will serve as a memorial of the fire and reflect the unity of the society that contributed to the rebuilding found. The primary step of the whole reconstruction is to find an adequate way of renewal and its ethical boundaries. Main attention is focused on the roof and on the spire of the cathedral. As a tribute to medieval builders who consecrated their lives into this magnificent piece of work. The exterior of the new design has the same silhouettes and proportions that it has got eight centuries ago, but with a touch of a modern day aesthetics. When designing the interior of the roof, it was really important to maintain a clear representation of Gothic architecture – the balance between darkness and light. The space is divided into two parts. The first part represents darkness, as an obstacle, which each of us has to overcome. The second part is full of natural light that seems to tear the roof of the cathedral and illuminates the entire space inside. At the heart of the design is a gem that matters the most, life. The spire of the cathedral is designed with four pillars that symbolize the connection of mind-spirit-body with physical world The idea of the spire reflects these seemingly different things, but together they unite into one piece.

This thesis is developed as a proposal for heating for a primary school and kindergarten in the region of Brno-countryside. For the insulated building, a combination of heating and air-conditioning is proposed. The concept is designed so that the air-conditioning preheats the exterior air and the heating system warms the incoming air to a comfortable temperature. For the required thermal performance, sources of heat (for gas and pellets) and a layout solution for the boiler room is designed. Drainage of combustion products is proposed for both solutions. The project solution is per the extent of the construction permit. The theoretical part is linked with the practical part through the condensation boilers, their function and division, and drainage of combustion products. The experiment for the given topic was conducted on the drainage of combustion products. The pressure loss of the reverse knob was determined in relation to the flow rate of air in the condensation boilers as this loss is essential in assessing the drainage of combustion products.

Master’s thesis theme is mountain hotel project. The hotel has one lower basement and four aboveground floor. It has trditional look and the roof is double-pitched. Floor projection looks like letter "L". Main part has measurements 25,3 x 14,1 m and it has four floor. Extension is on northwest side of main part. It has measuremnts 11,85 x 9,5 m and three floor. Facede of basement and first floor is from stone facing mansory. Facade od second floor of main patr of buildings id timbered looks like curb. Third and fourth floor are attic, gable is vertical timbered. Facade of second floor of extension is plaster on ETICS. The gable od extension is vertical timbered. Roof covering is alpen shingle from larch wood. Foundations of house are shallow. The construction system is walled. The lower basement is built from masonry BS Klatovy BD30 and other wall are from masonry Porotherm . Floor structures are from monolithic reinforced concrete, thickness 220 mm. House stairs are prefabricated double-flight. Partition wall are mostly built from mansory Porotherm 11,5 P+D. Lintols above windows and doors in facadeare made by reverse of floor slab and inside of disposition are made by ceramics lintols Porotherm. Floor structures are floating with impact insulation in whole house. In living rooms wear layers are from oak parquet block and in common rooms, toilets, bathrooms and technical rooms is ceramics paving. Wall’s surfaces are made from patent plaster and in lower basement are made from two-coat work with white coat. Toilets and bathrooms are tilled with ceramic tiles. All distributions of building equipment are covered with gypsum plasterboard ceiling. All windows and doors in facade are made by wooden profile Solid comfort SC78 and glazed by triple glazing unit (Uw,max=0,9 W/m2.K), exception is main entrance door, It is made by aluminum profile and it is automatically opened.

Hydroelectricity already contributes to electrical supply in places where it can. What are needed are rivers with adequate flow that can be dammed to provide a significant vertical drop. These are usually found in mountainous regions where runoff from snowmelt provides adequate water supply. Renewables such as solar and wind have low power densities. That means large areas will be needed to meet the electrical energy needs of cities in developed countries. The other problem is that they do not supply power when it is needed. Energy can be stored by pumping water uphill into a reservoir at a higher elevation. All the energy needs of a desert city can be met with solar in places where every day is sunny. Low-density development means there is enough roof area, and there are elevation differences for pumped storage. There are not many places in the world that meet all these conditions.

The kidneys can be at the root of the development of arterial hypertension or they can participate in the maintenance of hypertension and its sequels. Renal alterations interfering with the regulation of sodium homeostasis or facilitating the generation of vasoconstrictors, particularly angiotensin II, are involved in the dysregulation of arterial blood pressure that underlies the development of arterial hypertension. The biology of angiotensin is described in detail.The kidneys are also the mediator of hypertension in such examples as renal ischaemia and hyperaldosteronism. The role of renal nerves, and renal depressor substances, are also described.Transplantation experiments in animals and observations in human transplantation, as well as some primary gene defects, show the importance of renal mechanisms in hypertension. Once kidneys have been damaged, they often contribute to an increase in arterial pressure. Salt sensitivity is probably a major part of the mechanism, but it is mediated by multiple pathways.

Form and content give rise to the question of function in the Saletta delle Dame of the Palazzo Salvadego. It is a uniquely decorated space in which frescos cover the four walls, treating the viewer to an all-round vista of the countryside. Mediating between illusion and reality are eight life-size depictions of women in contemporary dress, whom, set in pairs behind a fictive balustrade, focus their attention towards the centre of the room. In the vaulted ceiling are painted musical instruments, suggesting a possible use for this space. The decorative effect is unlike any other room from this period. This chapter explores the imagery of the Saletta and considers its function within the broader context of frescoed Italian Renaissance rooms.

This chapter considers interwar New York hotels, the rise of hotel brands and chains, and the Ritz in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s fiction. The Ritz was a fiction of global finance: a licensing apparatus for a loose, decentralised and self-propagating franchise. The value of the Ritz was not in bricks and mortar but in its name and its brand. The Ritz aesthetic was an anticipation of corporate minimalism: white walls and white curtains with minimal decorative ornaments, culminating in the evaporated surfaces of its rooftop gardens. Its whiteness and transparency were fitting architectural expressions of the Ritz as a deterritorialised brand. Like the Ritz, F. Scott Fitzgerald (or ‘Fitz’) was a branded entity. For Fitzgerald, the pleasure of the Ritz and its roof garden was in its nothingness: a desirable nowhere into which the moneyed elite could escape. This chapter reads ‘The Diamond as Big as the Ritz’ as an allegory for capital’s struggle to escape the physicality of bricks and mortar. It then considers ‘May Day’, The Beautiful and Damned, and The Great Gatsby, where those with means strive toward the mobility and immateriality of ‘Ritz’ and of capital itself.

The pavement of room 1, like that of 3, is mortar (cocciopesto), containing isolated fragments of white and coloured marbles, including bardiglio scuro (or Hymettan?), giallo antico, and portasanta(?), amid a regular scatter of white chips, from 0.05 to 0.10 apart. A band of more closely spaced white tesserae, approx. d. 0.60 × w. 2.90 (tesserae from 0.005 to 0.008), marks the threshold between rooms 1 and 3. The three fragments of bardiglio scuro have maximum measurements of 0.20 × 0.125; 0.15 × 0.07; 0.06 × 0.065. Wall-paintings (Figs. 4, 5a; Pl. 133; Elia, 265; PPM ii. 231–2, figs. 2–4) State of preservation. The wall-paintings are late Third Style, with design and colours now damaged but with a few exceptions relatively easy to decipher. The W wall is the most complete, with plaster preserved to full height on the right, but dropping to just above the top of the dado near the left end before rising again to half-height in the SW angle. On the E wall, decorated only to the right of the doorway to room 2, the plaster is well preserved to mid-height. The S side of the room is open to room 3, but the shallow responds at each side retain plaster to mid-height. The N wall has no decoration other than fragments of a lararium painting to the right of the street entrance. The plaster overlaps the pavement. West wall. The DADO (ht. 0.82) is black with a delicate design of white and yellow lines, focused on a series of four little panels containing decorative motifs, one beneath each of the intervals of the main zone. Within an overall frame formed by a narrow white base-line (0.15 above the floor) and vertical white lines at each end (0.07 from the left angle, 0.19 from the right) the space is divided into five parts (w. resp. 0.70, 0.95, 1.17, 0.92, and 0.72) corresponding to the fivefold structure of the main zone. The two central divisions are each effected by a vertical white line interrupted at mid-height by a tiny square tilted at 45º; this is framed by the same white line, with an inner border-line in yellow, and contains a central rosette in white.

An active noise control device called active noise absorber (ANA), which is based upon damped, resonant filters is developed and demonstrated. It is similar to structural positive position feedback (PPF) control, with two exceptions: 1) acoustic transducers (microphone and speaker) can not be truly colocated, and 2) the acoustic actuator (loudspeaker) has significant dynamics. The speaker dynamics can affect performance and stability and must be compensated. While acoustic modal control approaches are typically not sought, there are a number of applications where controlling a few room modes is adequate. A model of a duct with speakers at each end is developed and used to demonstrate the control method, including the impact of the speaker dynamics. An all-pass filter is used to provide phase compensation and improve controller performance. A companion experimental study validated the simulation result and demonstrated nearly 10 dB of control in the first duct mode.

Control rod drive mechanism is very important to the operation and safety of reactors, therefore, requiring good mechanical properties and a high degree of reliability. The control rod drive mechanism of high-temperature-reactor pebble-bedmodule (HTR-PM) is powered by permanent magnet stepping motor and damped by the permanent magnetic damper. Therefore, the performance of both motor and damper have important impact on the control rod drive mechanism. However, the performance of permanent magnets is very sensitive to high-temperature. This paper describes the impact of the high temperature on the performance of critical components in the HTR-PM control rod drive mechanism. A Full-size thermal test bench is used to determine the performance of the key components within the scope from room temperature (20 ° C) to 250 ° C, with these data we can calculate the emergency insertion time. And further work plan is introduced too.

Platform dampers are commonly used in turbomachinery to reduce the vibration amplitudes of the turbine blades. A blade-to-blade platform damper is simply a piece of metal which is pressed against two adjacent blade platforms by centrifugal force. Relative motions of the platforms lead to slip in the contacts and friction damping is provided in the system. The studied platform damper is designed with inclined contact surfaces. This type of damper is often called a cottage-roof damper or wedge damper. The inclination of the contact surfaces leads to variation of the normal load, which complicates the analysis of such dampers. In this paper, a simulation model is presented for a tuned bladed disk with cottage-roof dampers. This model includes normal load variation on the contact and a friction interface model valid for both macroslip and microslip. The elasticity of the damper body is often an important parameter for the performance of the damper and is included in the model. A comparison between solving the equation of motion in the frequency domain and the time domain is performed. It is found that the frequency domain solution with the fundamental frequency alone gives a result close to the time domain solution. The simulation model is validated with experimental data and it is found that the reduction of the resonance amplitude agrees well for the tested dampers. A parametric study is performed to find the optimal friction damper design. The studied parameters are the inclination of the contact surface, the coefficient of friction and the damper body stiffness. It is found that an increase in inclination of the contact surface and an increase in the coefficient of friction lead to a reduction of the optimal damper mass. An increase of the damper body stiffness results in a decrease of the resonance amplitude of the blade tip, particularly for high damper masses.

A generic method for analysis of nonlinear forced response for bladed discs with friction dampers of different design has been developed. The method uses explicit finite element modelling of dampers, which allows accurate description of flexibility and, for the first time, dynamic properties of dampers of different design in multiharmonic analysis of bladed discs. Large-scale finite element damper and bladed disc models containing 104–106 DOFs can be used. These models, together with detailed description of contact interactions over contact interface areas, allow for any level of refinement required for modelling of elastic damper bodies and for modelling of friction contact interactions. Numerical studies of realistic bladed discs have been performed with three different types of underplatform dampers: (i) a ‘cottage-roof’ (called also ‘wedge’) damper; (ii) seal wire damper; and (iii) a strip damper. Effects of contact interface parameters and excitation levels on damping properties of the dampers and forced response are extensively explored.

This paper proposed multi-resonant electromagnetic (EM) shunt dampers and investigated the optimal designs and performances of shunt circuits for a single DOF primary system. The circuits are arranged in parallel or series based on the analogy of multiple tuned mass dampers (TMDs). The objective is to minimize the root-mean-square (RMS) vibration of the primary system subjected to random base excitations. For single resonant EM shunt damper, closed-form solutions of optimal system parameters are obtained. For multi-resonant EM shunt dampers, the system parameters are numerically optimized. The vibration suppression performance of multi-resonant EM shunt dampers are compared with double-mass TMDs under the same 5% total stiffness ratio. It shows that the parallel shunt damper can achieve slightly better performance than parallel TMDs while the series shunt damper behaves differently from series TMDs. The optimal result of the series shunt damper will be the same as the single resonant shunt damper. It is also found that the multi-resonant EM shunt damper is much more sensitive to the capacitance than the resistance in the shunt circuits.

During operation, the rotating blades of a gas turbine are subjected to centrifugal forces as well as fluctuating gas forces, resulting in blade vibrations. In addition to material damping, aerodynamical and blade root damping, underplatform dampers are widely used to increase the amount of damping and to decrease blade vibration amplitudes. The friction forces generated by the relative displacements between the underplatform damper and the blade platforms provide a significant amount of energy dissipation. In practice, a number of different underplatform damper designs are applied. Basically, these are wedge dampers with flat contact areas, cylindrical dampers with curved surfaces or asymmetrical dampers with both flat contact surfaces on one side and curved contact surfaces on the other. The latter damper type combines the advantages of both the wedge and the cylindrical damper by preventing the damper from pure rolling on the one hand as it has been observed for cylindrical dampers and on the other hand, avoiding a diverged plane area contact in case of a wedge damper, causing a damper lift-off. This paper will focus on the investigation of cylindrical and asymmetrical underplatform dampers. A comparison between measurements of rotating assemblies in Siemens PG gas turbines (V84.2, V64.3A and V94.3A(2)) under test and real operating conditions with cylindrical and asymmetrical underplatform dampers and the predictions of the developed theoretical model are presented. Special attention is paid to the frequency shift due to the application of an underplatform damper, since in particular for stationary gas turbines, in addition to the amplitude reduction, the accurate prediction of the resonance frequency is of major interest.

Magnetorheological (MR) dampers have emerged as a viable means of semi-active damping in multiple industry applications. The semi-active nature of these dampers is a significant attribute since the damper functions as a passive damper in the event of a failure. While there have been other smart materials like ferroelectric, piezoelectric, shape memory alloys, etc. that have been successfully used, MR fluids exhibit a unique combination of completely reversible effect, very low response time, high durability and very low energy requirements that make them suitable for vibration control in a wide variety of applications. This paper presents results from an experimental investigation that has been carried out to evaluate the performance of a MR damper for vibration mitigation. The capability of a commercial MR damper to isolate a payload from base excitation is analyzed and the damper parameters are identified to simulate the capability of the damper with regards to transmissibility. Multiple iterations of testing are performed in order to evaluate the influence of variables such as input current to the electromagnet, mass of the payload, excitation frequency and excitation amplitude. Results indicate that the MR damper is successful in mitigating vibrations transmitted to the payload. Vibration mitigation is quantified through multiple means such as comparing the root mean square (RMS) of the time history of acceleration of the base with that of the payload, comparing the frequency response and evaluating the hysteresis plots. Displacement transmissibility results directly demonstrate the variable damping capability of the MR damper. Although the stiffness constant of the damper may also change, it is not seen to vary appreciably in this study since the excitation amplitude is limited to a low threshold. The damper is found to be robust with an inherent ability of handling payload and excitation variability. It is observed that increasing the input current to the electromagnet around the MR fluid results in an increase in damping, therefore, making the use of these dampers viable in applications where payloads and excitation inputs are expected to change during operation.

In rotor-bearing systems, squeeze film dampers (SFDs) provide structural isolation, reduce amplitudes of rotor response to imbalance, and in some instances, increase the system threshold speed of instability. SFDs are typically installed at the bearing supports, either in series or in parallel. In multi-spool engines, SFDs are located in the interface between rotating shafts. These intershaft dampers must ameliorate complex rotor motions of various whirl frequencies arising from the low speed and the high speed rotors. The paper presents experiments to characterize the forced response of an open ends SFD subject to dynamic loads with multiple frequencies, as in a jet engine intershaft damper. The test rig comprises of a stationary journal and a flexibly supported housing that holds the test damper and instrumentation. The open ends SFD is 127 mm in diameter, 25.4 mm film land length, and radial clearance of 0.125 mm. The damper is lubricated with ISO VG 2 oil at room temperature (24 °C, feed pressure 31 kPa). In the experiments, two orthogonally positioned shakers deliver forces to the test damper that produce controlled amplitude motions with two whirl frequencies, one fixed and the other one varying over a specified range that includes the test system natural frequency. The test data collected, forces and motions versus time, are converted into the frequency domain for parameter identification. The identified viscous damping coefficients are strong functions of the amplitude of journal motion, lying within predictions from classical formulas for circular centered orbits and small amplitude motions about an eccentric journal position. The damper inertia coefficients agree well with predictions derived from a fluid flow model that includes the effect of the feed groove.

The paper presents the experimental activity about the dynamic response of the blades of a gas turbine for power generation carrying underplatform dampers. The final aim of the activity is to provide an experimental data base to validate the results of a numerical tool which calculates the response of the blades with underplatform dampers. The blades have fir tree attachments and an asymmetric damper is fitted between the blade platforms. The dynamic behavior of the blades is detected by an experimental campaign on two blades mounted in a test rig. Stepped sine measurements are performed with a closed-loop control system on the excitation amplitude. Different levels of excitation amplitude and centrifugal force on the damper are tested. The test campaign pointed out the presence of damping due both to the underplatform damper and to the blade attachment. The contribution of the different damping sources are discussed and analyzed. A method is suggested to identify the root damping which is not constant but proved to depend on the excitation force on the blades.

The goal of fire service training is to prepare students for the conditions and challenges that they face on the fireground. Among the challenges that firefighters routinely face on the fireground are ventilation-controlled fires. The hazard of these fires has been highlighted by several line-of-duty deaths and injuries in which a failure to understand the fire dynamics produced by these fires has been a contributing factor. The synthetic fuels that commonly fill contemporary homes tend to result in ventilation-controlled conditions. While synthetic fuels are common on the residential fireground, the fuels that firefighters use for fire training are more often representative of natural, wood-based fuels. In order to better understand the fire dynamics of these training fires, a series of experiments was conducted in a concrete live fire training building in an effort to evaluate the fidelity and safety of two training fuels, pallets and OSB, and compare the fire dynamics created by these fuels to those created by a fuel load representative of a living room set with furniture items with a synthetic components. Additionally, the effects of the concrete live fire training building on the fire dynamics were examined. The two training fuel loads were composed of wooden pallets and straw, and pallets, straw, and oriented strand board (OSB). The results indicated that the high leakage area of the concrete live fire training building relative to the fuel load prevented the training fuel packages from becoming ventilation-controlled and prevented the furniture package from entering a state of oxygen-depleted decay. The furniture experiments progressed to flashover once ventilation was provided. Under the conditions tested, the wood based fuels, combined with the construction features of this concrete live fire training building, limited the ability to teach ventilation-controlled fire behavior and the associated firefighting techniques. Additionally, it was shown that the potential for thermal injury to firefighters participating in a training evolution existed well below thresholds where firefighter PPE would be damaged.
