At the beginning of the 1990’s, after a period of momentary confusion, when Czech literature seems to have temporarily lost its way in the newly establishing democratic society which emerged after the fall of communism a number of rather interesting and important writers appeared. Holding the memories of recent communist past and experiencing the historical turning point when Czech society rejoined the capitalist West, they produced an image of cultural and political initiation. They bore witness to the arrival of chaos, associated with regime change, to a crisis of personal values and a search for new ways of existence. This thesis analyzes the literary work of two contemporary Czech writers, Emil Hakl and Jan Balabán. It explores the way the reality of their narratives is shaped. It investigates the reality these narratives reflect, the reality these narratives create and the reality that the reader of these narratives re-creates on the basis of his/her knowledge of the world. The thesis considers the value judgments which are being made by Czech society through its contemporary literature about its post-communist present. The thesis also examines the question to what extent these narratives construct an image of contemporary Czech society. The thesis deals with the complete fiction written by Emil Hakl (b. 1958) and Jan Balabán (1961-2010), two popular and critically acclaimed Czech writers. The first part of the thesis analyzes Hakl’s fiction, in particular his debut Konec světa (The End of the World), a work which opens the world of Jan Beneš (Hakl’s real name), the narrating character of this text and also the narrating character of almost all the other texts written by Emil Hakl. The second part of the thesis focuses on the constructed and deconstructed world of Jan Balabán’s fiction. It deals with themes and motifs that appear and re-appear in the lives of Balabán’s male and female characters and explores individual characters whose lives have been shaped by their own personal breakdowns as well as by changes in the social and political conditions of the external world. The thesis analyzes Hakl’s and Balabán’s narratives from a narratological point of view. The thesis uses the semiotic and narratological approach (H. Porter Abbott, Mieke Bal, Seymour Chatman, Tomáš Kubíček and Gerald Prince), the post-structuralist approach (Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva), the psychoanalytical approach (Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Žižek), the postmodern (Steven Connor), the theories dealing with the typology and the mythology of the novel and the city (Daniela Hodrová), the cultural approach (John Storey) and the approach of New Historicism (Louis A. Montrose, Hayden White).

Avec notre thèse, nous voulons poser les fondements linguistiques et didactiques nécessaires à la future élaboration d’un programme ou d’une méthode en intercompréhension slave, en prenant l’exemple des langues slaves de l’ouest et du sud-ouest et en fournissant une analyse linguistique de trois langues : le tchèque, le slovène et le croate. Dans notre travail, nous cherchons principalement à fournir deux éléments : - Une série d’hypothèses linguistiques ayant pour objectif de déterminer les points à enseigner dans une méthode d’intercompréhension concernant le tchèque, le slovène et le croate ;- Une présentation de programmes et de supports en didactique de l’intercompréhension réalisés et testés dans le cadre de notre cursus.Dans notre travail, nous constatons que la didactique de l’intercompréhension slave diffère en de nombreux points avec les apprentissages classiques. Dans le cas de l’intercompréhension, de nombreux points normalement lourds et complexes à maîtriser peuvent n’être que survolés. Grâce à nos analyses, tant sur le plan linguistique que didactique, nous avons pu fournir une réflexion sur l’une des formes que pourra prendre une formation en intercompréhension slave dans le futur. Nous préconisons particulièrement l’utilisation de ressources en ligne, via, par exemple, le site www.rozrazum.eu, développé dans le cadre de cette thèse afin de tester des activités respectant la méthodologie proposée par Eurom 5 (Bonvino et al. 2001). Ce site pourra servir, dans un premier temps, de plate-forme de test et de mise au point d’approches didactiques, tout en étant fonctionnel, et donc disponible à un public d’apprenants
With our thesis, we intend to lay out the linguistic and didactic foundations necessary for the future elaboration of a program or a method in Slavic intercomprehension by taking the example of the Western and the South-Western Slavic languages and in providing a linguistic analysis of three languages: Czech, Slovene and Croatian.In our work, we seek mainly to provide two elements:- A series of linguistic hypotheses aimed at determining the points to be taught in an intercomprehension method concerning Czech, Slovene and Croatian;- A presentation of programs and support in intercomprehension didactics realized and tested as part of our curriculum.In our work, we find that the didactics of Slavic intercomprehension differs in many ways from classical learning. In the case of intercomprehension, many points that are normally heavy and complex to master may be only passed through quickly.Thanks to our linguistical and didactical analyzes, we have been able to provide a reflection on one of the forms that Slavic intercomprehension formation can take in the future. We particularly recommend the use of online resources, for example via the website www.rozrazum.eu, developed as a part of this thesis to test activities following the methodology made for Eurom 5 (Bonvino et al., 2001). This website can initially be used as a test and development platform for didactical approaches, while being functional, and therefore available to a public of learners

This dissertation examines elite and popular consciousness among Czech speakers in America during their mass migration from Bohemia and Moravia, the two Habsburg crownlands that became the largest part of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Between 1860 and 1910, their numbers increased tenfold to almost a quarter-million, as recorded in the United States census, and to over a half-million with their children. That was almost one-twelfth of their population in Bohemia and Moravia. In the same half-century, a stable group of men made Czech-language journalism and publishing in America. They included Karel Jon�? in Wisconsin, V�clav ?najdr in Cleveland, Franti?ek Boleslav Zdr?bek and August Geringer in Chicago, and Jan Rosick� in Omaha. Students of the first Czech-language secondary schools in Bohemia, they came to the 1860s American Midwest in their twenties and modernized a print culture launched by bricklayers and tailors. They also became leading voices in what the subtitle calls contention and brotherhood among their countrymen. Contention formed the three large camps, subcultures and allegiances?liberal/Freethinker, Catholic and Socialist. Brotherhood denotes the forms of association and security that made the fraternal benefit societies the largest and most durable platforms for Bohemian identity and advocacy in America. The dissertation uses Czech-American newspapers from the period, historiography and new archival sources from both sides of the Atlantic to more closely examine definitive episodes, personalities and institutions among Bohemians while they formed important urban and rural communities in American society from New York to the Great Plains.

In this thesis we analyze machine translation between Czech and Russian languages from the perspective of a linguist. We work with two types of Machine Translation systems - rule-based (TectoMT) and statistical (Moses). We experiment with different setups of these two systems in order to achieve the best possible quality. One of the questions we address in our work is whether relatedness of the discussed languages has some impact on machine translation. We explore the output of our two experimental systems and two commercial systems: PC Translator and Google Translate. We make a linguistically-motivated classification of errors for the language pair and describe each type of error in detail, analyzing whether it occurred due to some difference between Czech and Russian or is it caused by the system architecture. We then compare the usage of some specific linguistic phenomena in the two languages and state how the individual systems cope with mismatches. For some errors, we suggest ways to improve them and in several cases we implement those suggestions. In particular, we focus on one specific error type - surface valency. We research the mismatches between Czech and Russian valency, extract a lexicon of surface valency frames, incorporate the lexicon into the TectoMT translation pipeline and present...

The object of the study is to follow and compare the development of the semantics of lexical units, which have the common Proto-Slavonic base and different meanings in modern languages. The development is studied within a time period ranging from the Proto-Slavonic period up to the modern language state. To cover all three representative groups of Slavic languages: West Slavic, East Slavic and South Slavic were selected the appropriate languages: Czech, Russian and Slovenian. The selection of lexical units is morphologically restricted. The research is focused on adjectives. The work contains theoretical and analytical part. The theoretical part specifies terminology and presents a number views on the potential significance of the development of lexical units in terms of diachronic lexicology. The analysis is devoted to the development and is categorized as follows: each of the twelve selected semantic groups includes sections devoted to Proto-Slavonic, Old Church Slavonic, Russian, Czech and Slovenian languages. The subject of this thesis is the "Comparison of the translations of realia in the fictional universe of Harry Potter". The main aim is to divide the realia found in Harry Potter books into thematic categories and thencarry out translation analysis to estimate translation solutions. This analysis is created through the prism of English. This thesis consists of three parts. The first part covers the general concepts of the theory of translation. The second part contains a brief biography of J. K. Rowling, the definition of fantasy, and an overview of the history of the four translations. The third part presents a comparison of the translation from English into two variations of Russian, Czech, and Ukrainian. In the thesis conclusion, we will summarize and estimate which translation solution of the four is more accurate, based on the carried out analysis of the translation examples discussed in part three. This work in the field of the translation theory, extending to the translation practice, focuses on exploring literary terms and techniques, that participate in the construction and poeticisation of the literary text. Very often these terms make problems in the process of translation text from one language to another. The aim is localizing (with regard to its contextual involvement), analysis and subsequent selection of the most appropriate translation solutions of these terms. The work focuses on the translation of these literary devices not only in plan of Slavic languages (Russian, Czech, Slovak), but also takes into account the aspect of non-Slavic languages (English).

NADPH-P450 oxidoreductase (POR) is a membrane bound flavoprotein that donates electrons to a wide spectrum of heme-containing proteins, among which are several steroidogenic and many xenobiotics-metabolizing enzymes. Given the important role of POR protein in drug metabolism and pharmacogenomics, there is a particular need to understand the contributions of POR genetic variants to these processes. Mutations in POR gene cause a disorder called POR deficiency, which manifests with a wide phenotypic spectrum ranging from disordered steroidogenesis to skeletal malformation, namely, Antley-Bixler syndrome (ABS). The aim of the present work was to investigate the POR gene in patients suspected to have POR deficiency syndrome from Czech Republic and to perform genotyping in Czech and Jewish control populations. We analyzed 644 alleles in unrelated individuals from the general Czech population and 1128 alleles in Jewish population, where 330 alleles were of Askhenazi and 798 of Sephardic Jews. We have also studied the impact of selected new genetic variants on POR activity and identified fourteen amino acid variations, two of which we have studied in detail to establish their influence on POR activity. The thesis aims to describe and theoretically explain the range of complex nominal word structures and phrases that evolved in all Slavic languages with staggering productivity during the last decades. In particular, it focuses on the so called analytical adjectives, i.e. formally invariant lexical units mostly of foreign origin that manifest their attributive syntactic role (and the word class they belong to) not through a morpheme but through fixed word order position. The thesis rejects the view that analytical adjectives are first parts of compound words and explores several transitional cases. In more general terms, the thesis explores phenomena that test the boundary between words and phrases, morphology and syntax. It concludes that in Bulgarian there already exists a well established word subclass of analytical adjectives. They have resulted from an originally lexical innovation that has been grammatcalized due to intensive borrowings of words and phrase models mainly from English and their replication. The comparative study of present-day Bulgarian and Czech provides evidence of the strategies that the two genetically related languages use to achieve their nomination goals. It deals with Buddhism as a complex phenomenon consisiting of philosophical, religious, socio-cultural, psychological and ethical planes. Between the years 1931-1934, both in the region of Jizera in the area between Semily and Mladá Boleslav and in the region of Central Elbe between Kolín and Nymburk, eight subsidiary unions of the Czechoslovakian-Lusatian society "Adolf Černý" were founded. On three other places, namely in Český Brod, Kouřim and Lysá nad Labem, the attempts to establish the local unions failed. Nonetheless, the area consequently became the second most significant cultural centre as well as the meeting point of the Lusatian Sorbs in the inter-war Czechoslovakia, the first one being Prague. It was regularly visited by the Lusatian Sokol gymnasts or choirs, and Lusatian-Sorbian children as well as university students spent their holidays there. It is therefore no surprise that the Mužský Hill near the city of Mnichovo Hradiště became the location of a demonstration in support of the Lusatian Sorbs which took place there in July 1933 as a reaction to a wave of persecutions in Germany. Due to the fragmentary nature of the sources, the topic of the following thesis is based primarily on the regional press, the Sorbian press and the journal Českolužický věstník, called Lužickosrbský věstník since 1931.
