Повний текст джерелаAlthough surfing officially made its debut in France in 1956 on the Basque coast, its culture was not put into narrative form and disseminated by the media until 1986, when the first French surfing magazine, Surf Session, was created. Fascinated in their youth by these men from across the Atlantic who played with the waves and brought with them a new, liberated lifestyle, two men decided to create a French surfing magazine in March 1986. Surfing was booming at the time: surfwear brands were establishing themselves along the Aquitaine coast, national and international competitions were multiplying, as were clubs, whose development the magazine supported. As a privileged vector of surfing culture, this medium is both an archive and a means of promoting a new, sometimes counter-cultural sport and its social activities. A semio-historical analysis of the statements and visibilities contained in the issues over a period of thirty-eight years brings to light a Homeric vision of the practice in the form of an epic, first Illiadesque, then Odyssean, summoning ancient symbols and myths to create new ones. It contributes to inscribing the sport in the collective psyche through representations which this work proposes to deconstrcut by questioning its

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis is an ethnographic analysis of surfing and the surfing culture on Australia’s Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia). In such a touristic region, the mild climate, warm water and the quantity and quality of waves have attracted many surfers, that have created a real surfing legacy. Surfing here contributes to shape the landscape and has become an integral part of the cultural heritage and of a socially constructed idea of “a life in the Gold Coast style”. Therefore, in the process of definition of the local surfing culture, both local and more wide questions are involved. Firstly, the particular relation with the beach and the ocean Australian people have historically developed deeply influence the way surfers enjoy riding the waves. Secondly, an “imagined” sense of Australian-ness rooted on the colonial history of the country is reflected and reproduced in the local surfing environment. Finally, surfing actively participate to the co-construction of the gender categories and attributes (especially those linked to masculinity). In this thesis, surfing is conceived as an “ordinary passion” into which practitioners invest their time and resources in order to give a deeper meaning to their lives. As happens to the consumption practices which are based on a free individual choice, surfing reflects the “character” and values of those who show their commitment to it. In this way, it constitutes a cultural “frame” in which the surfers’ gestures make sense. The thesis is divided in 7 chapters. Chapter 1 is a critical review of the existent scientific literature on surfing. In Chapter 2, surfing is conceived as a hybrid bodily practice that cross the boundaries between “sport” and “game”, “sport” and “performance”, “sport” and “dance”, and so on. Chapter 3 is about the methodologies adopted for this research. Moreover, a broader reflection on reflectivity and the body in the ethnographic study of sporting activities is proposed. The socially and culturally ways through which in Australia and on the Gold Coast particular “modality of enjoyment” of the beach and the sea have been historically produced are investigated in Chapter 4 and 5, that also describe the way these modes of appreciation inform surfing culture on the Gold Coast. In Chapter 6, a view of the surfer as an athletic, contemporary version of the “romantic hero” is discussed. On the Gold Coast, this image also epitomizes some of the main features attached to the Australian “character” and identity. Chapter 7 describes how this reciprocal relationship between the surfers’ image and an idealized Australian identity has built a mainly manly and white sporting culture, organized around two ambivalent but coherent principles of social relations: on the one hand, the reciprocity between the surfer and the ocean that offers him so much “fun”; and, on the other hand, the competition among surfers to establish the priority on the line-up (that is, to establish who has the right to enjoy that reciprocity with the sea and who is instead excluded from it).

Повний текст джерелаFor some, surf practice is part of their building process in the midst of the contemporary worlds. To surf, and especially to become a surfer, is acquired through a traditional transmission, far from federal norms. Being a surfer means a different way of life, which shows in the interaction with other surfers, the use of nature , the outlook on the body as well as in the male/female relations. This particular environment, with its stigmatising aspects, is singled out by the rest of society. Surf practice, which oscilates between game and sport, might be an answer to the contemporary social crisis through its non-respect of rules and values. And it is through these social gaps that the relation to the surfer's world has filtered : this surfing culture which is therefore considered as deviant by the rest of society

Повний текст джерелаFood, language and culture are closely linked and cooking shows are peppered with culturally specific references. Culturally specific references are defined as “any reference to a cultural entity which, due to its distance from the target culture, is characterized by a sufficient degree of opacity for the target reader to constitute a problem” (Mailhac in Ranzato 2015:54) and can be things such as measurements (pints), brands (Tabasco), and dishes (surf and turf) to name a few. This study focuses on the translation of culture specific references in cooking shows. Since most of the cooking shows translated into Swedish are in English, the material for this study consists of 21 cooking shows in English and their Swedish translations. This study will look at the shows 3 good things, Save with Jamie, David Rocco’s Dolce Vita, Kitchen Hero and The Great British Bake off. By constructing a corpus and analyzing the culturally specific references, the norms regarding translation strategies for the translation of culturally specific references in cooking shows have been mapped out, and compared to the results of a well known study on primetime TV by Pedersen (2011). These were categorized in accordance with Pedersen’s taxonomy (2011:76). The results showed that the norms were very similar to those of primetime TV, with the exception of some domain-specific norms. Language influences how we see the world. Thus, the way culturally specific references are translated from one culture into another is important because it affects how cultures are viewed and interpreted, at least within the food community.

Повний текст джерелаThe consumption, especially in the capitalist societies, isn´t connected only to the functional value of products. But also to the symbols that they represent (MCCRACKEN 1988;2003; FEATHERSTONE 1995). In These societies, possessions have influence on the individual´s identity construction, Who search for products to associate himself to groups or sub groups in his every day life. (BELK 1988; SCHOUTEN e MCLAEXANDER 1995; COVA 1999;2010; MAFESSOLI 2006). Subcultures of consumption, brand communities and tribes have gained more attention from the Marketing academy and Brands. Some of these groups have already been researched especially in the US (SCHOUTEN e MCALEXANDER 1995 ; KOZINETS 1997 ; 2001). Studies like the one performed by Irwin (1973), indicates a similar organization on the figure of the Surfer. In Brazil, the Surf market is responsible for more than 140.000 jobs and generates billions in the local currency annually. (ZUCO ET AL, 2002). With this perspective in mind, the current study had the objective to investigate the existence of a subculture of consumption related to the Surf in Brazil. The research aimed to understand also the role of possessions to the Surfer and the Sympathizer, the biggest responsible for the purchases on this market (FORNECK, 2008), and the relation of the companies of this sector with these individuals. To achieve this goal, it was followed a multi – methods approach with the integration of the techniques like Videography, In dept interviews, non participant observations and Photo Elicitation Technique. The results points to the existence of a tribe, represented on the figure of the Surfer. This tribes integrates itself by a common life style based in ideals like love to the sport, communion with nature, an healthy life Style and an own language. The results also shows that the sympathizer is insert in an large culture of consumption, where he buys clothes and accessories to be an part of the society. It is also apparent the role of the Surf brands on the appropriation of some the ideals and life style of the surfer to sell an new an ideal scenario and life style to the sympathizer.

The assessment is clear: public cultural politicies in Ivory Coast and Africa in general are in a crisis. However, after 40 years of intervention and engagement by public authorities, private entities and non-governmental organizations, they have started to jointly work to serve African arts and culture. Despite these amenities still being in their infancy and with several deficiencies we can no longer neglect the importance, both in terms of economic and social impacts, of arts and culture in Ivory Coast

Повний текст джерелаThe registers of grievances have been worked on, exploited and published. They have been widely commented upon especially by experts including Michelet,Taine, Tocqueville, Jaures or Furet. Since they have been subjected to all sorts of reading grids, ranging from cursive to structural reading, and searched for any relevant information they could disclose about the political, the economic and the cultural situation of the time, they seem to hold no more secrets. Yet, commemorating the bicentennial on a scientific level was the opportunity to remind every one of us of their extraordinary richness. Reading them from a cultural point of view isn't aimed at being considered as + scoop ;. It rather aims, on the one hand, at taking into account the immense historical production of the last three decades and on the other hand, at making the most of the product of the extraordinary effort which has been put into publication for over a century. Indeed, recent works in the field of public opinion or material culture raise new questions. Along the same hoes, the numerous available editions enable us to approach things from qualitative as well as a quantitative angle by examining them on different scales (local, regional, national). After presenting a critical synthesis of the existing works on the subject, the survey concerning both national and regional levels, casts a light on rural people's moral and philosophical aspirations, whether these convey their yearning for freedom, equality, happiness or progress. From these representations, it then goes on to explore cultural attitudes. For instance, through a complaint about the tax system, the members of the peasant community expressed their moral and philosophical yearnings, they described their conception of authority and sovereignty, they disclosed their fear of running short of bread, their dread of being struck by a disease or else their craving for culture. They wondered about the adequate means to collect the necessary funds for the education of their children, for medicine or to lure a capable surgeon and a competent midwife into settling in their village. Thus people of modest means cast a special light - at least in the context of a meeting - on what the ideals of the + siècle des Lumières ; were to lead on to on a local scale

Examining the governance of the sea, oceans and the coast is essential at both global and local levels. Considering the existing legal and institutional arrangements and peculiarities of the marine-coastal zones, it is pertinent to assess the potential of “surfing reserves” as a category of protected area (international level) and a territorial space to be protected (national level). The surfing reserves can be distinctly nominated as a policy instrument by the organised societies and/or governments to protect surf breaks, adjacent areas and surf culture. In this study on the surfing reserves, through exploratory research – bibliographical and documentary analysis – and, through a qualitative methodology, a descriptive analysis was carried out on the legislation and existing voluntary and cogent law models. The study highlights the historical transition to modern surfing and identifies the role of stakeholders’ participation from different countries in order to protect and use the marine-coastal spaces. It notes the advances in the creation of programs and laws and the need to adjust and create strategies for greater effectiveness. It presents propositions that may advance the positive contributory aspects and the preponderant role of the surf community in their dialogue with the decision makers. It concludes with an urgent call to recognise and accommodate different uses of the surfing reserves in developing a thorough understanding of marine-coastal environmental governance.

Because of the worldwide shortage of graftable corneas used to treat corneal pathlogies, alternatives to restore visual impairments, such as the production of a human cornea tissues by tissue engineering, have been considered. To treat injuries affecting the corneal epithelium, such as limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), the corneal equivalent must have an epithelium able to self-renewal allowing healing of the patient's corneal epithelium after the transplantation. To culture human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) in vitro, the use of a feeder layer is necessary so as to maintain the subpopulation of corneal stem cells, which is essential for the proper proliferation of these cells. Therefore, the culture conditions must allow the maintenance of the stem phenotype of these cells, while promoting their proliferation and delaying their terminal differentiation. Other parameters, such as the post-mortem interval of the corneal tissue from which the cultured HCECs are derived, can influence the success of the culture. It is therefore important to characterize the cultures of HCECs in order to optimize the success of a transplant, namely, when these cells are transplanted in order to regenerate the injured corneal epithelium of a patient. The work presented in this thesis demonstrates that the co-culture of HCECs with a murine feeder layer resulted in a significant increase in the expression and the binding to DNA of NFI. This was shown to be caused by strong expression of the NFI-B isoform with increased stability due to hyper-glycosylation. The preservation of the NFI-B isoform with cellular passages was correlated with a faster differentiation of the HCECs in culture. This work also shows that the effect of this murine feeder layer on the expression levels and the DNA binding capacity of the transcription factors Sp1 and NFI was confirmed in another cell type. Indeed, the co-culture of human corneal endothelial cells with the murine feeder layer also caused a significant increase in the expression and binding to DNA of NFI. In this study, this was associated with an improvement in the morphology of human corneal endothelial cells. This work also showed that post-mortem interval could have a negative influence on the proliferation of HCECs and on the maintenance of stem cells during monolayer cultures. When the same cell populations were used to reconstruct a human cornea with tissue engineering, the healing capacity of the reconstructed corneal epithelia was decreased by the increase in post-mortem interval. This was notably validated by a study of the transcriptome of these cell populations by DNA microarray. It has also been shown that a graft reconstructed with HCECs co-cultivated with human feeder layer has enabled to heal the corneal surface an eye with LSCD. These different results highlight that the use of a human feeder layer for culture, associated with a short post-mortem interval of the donor tissues, is to be favoured in order to promote a good in vitro proliferation of HCECs cultivated in monolayer.

This project aims to demonstrate how we can adapt a fashion brand to the needs and demand of the fans of this culture with a specific function such as to protect from the rain. In this study, a first stage of research and theoretical framework, it explores concepts related to branding, origin, creation and brand development, as well as structures that can be adopted by a corporate identity. The importance that consumers attach to brands is also analyzed. Since this is a fashion label that reflects the surfing lifestyle, it is also important to understand the meaning of "fashion", knowing the surf culture, its essence, birth and evolution, since the brand intends to reach this specific audience. Finally, the project methodologies are part of the concepts studied either for branding, or for planning the product. In an attempt to better understand consumer preferences and surfing universe of brands consumed by them, it is exposed a market analysis and present two case studies of brands BILLABONG and RAINS, which may be possible indirect competitors of the created brand. The project culminates with the creative processes of brand building COAST by BLOBS AND DROPS and the development of the concept pieces that materialize it.

Analysis of oligosaccharide precursors revealed that the structure of the lipid-linked oligosaccharides was constant over the batch process. On the contrary, the hypothesis of a quantitative limitation of the glycan structures could not be excluded. Moreover, the decline in intracellular nucleotide triphosphates and adenylate energy charge could be linked to the decrease in IFN glycosylation. This is supported by an unchanged pattern of IFN glycosylation when the cells displayed a high adenylate energy charge in a rich culture medium

Повний текст джерелаIn South-West France, popcorn maize is generally grown under intensive cropping systems, where the soil is left bare during the fallow period entailing environmental risks. In the context of agroecological transition, the introduction of cover crops (CCs) during fallow period is emerging as a key lever for ecosystem service provisioning. The aim of our research was twofold: to understand the impact of the establishment quality of CCs on their biomass production potential, which is a prerequisite for ecosystem service provisioning; and to assess abiotic and biotic effects of different CCs on the establishment quality, roots mycorrhization, development and productivity of popcorn maize compared with the control treatment represented by a bare soil. Firstly, we conducted a global meta-analysis (275 studies, 53 127 observations) to quantify the response of maize germination, emergence, roots mycorrhization, plant height, biomass yield and grain yield to different CC botanical families and compositions. Secondly, we carried out a 2-year field experiments at Auzeville-Tolosane to assess the quality of establishment and biomass production potential of a wide range of CCs belonging to three major families (i.e. brassicas, legumes, grasses) grown in pure stands and mixtures, and to determine their abiotic and biotic effects on the following popcorn maize. The CC species tested in pure stands were: i) three species of brassicas (white mustard var.Architect, indian mustard var.Etamine, winter radish var.Daïkon CS), ii) four species of legumes (winter faba bean (var.Irena, var.Diva), spring faba bean (var.Nanaux, var.Scuro), common vetch (var.Spido, var.Veronica), purple vetch var.Titane), and one grass species (cereal rye var.Wastauro), while CCs tested in mixtures were: spring faba bean (var.Nanaux)-indian mustard, spring faba bean (var.Nanaux)-winter radish, common vetch (2 varieties)-indian mustard, common vetch (var.Spido)-field pea (var.Arkta), and winter faba bean (var.Irena)-phacelia (var.Maja). Our research showed that the quality of establishment is a determining factor in the biomass production of brassica CCs while it is not the case for legume CCs and mixtures that compensated emergence losses via ramification and branching. Popcorn productivity was significantly related to its stand density and its level of roots mycorrhization. Although CCs reduced the popcorn stand density, they maintained roots mycorrhization and grain yield in a system with high nitrogen inputs. On the other hand, CCs regulated weed development and improved nitrogen nutrition and popcorn grain sanitary quality. However, cereal rye and the common vetch-winter pea mixture resulted the least favourable for popcorn cultivation, especially cereal rye, which reduces population density, yield, and popcorn grain sanitary quality. In agreement with our meta-analysis, we conclude that brassica-legume mixtures are the most favourable combinations not only for sufficient biomass production but also for improved popcorn maize establishment and productivity, while regulating weeds and mycotoxins in the grains. In particular, popcorn maize can draw maximum benefits when grown under a low-input system, with the proportion of brassicas being adjusted in the mixture in relation to post-harvest nitrogen residues in the soil

Discusses the history of the relationship between body, nature, memory and culture in the Titanzinho Beach, east coast of Fortaleza. The clipping set is located mainly in the 1960s to 2010. The Beach Titanzinho, traditional fishing area, became internationally known in the 1970s for surfing. In the 1990s, however, factors such as rapid population growth and the crime outbreak provided the end of sporting events and the location has become stigmatized in the city. More recently, with the opening of surf schools and especially with the emergence of young native champions, have changed many important aspects in the local experience. Based on orality, magazines specializing in surfing, documents from the neighborhood associations and other research sources, discusses the formation of community, suggesting the emergence of surfing as body practice that emerges from new desires and sensibilities towards nature

How do culture and identity influence the learning of French? What are the difficulties of the Chinese learners in the French classes, and why do they ask for grammar courses and rarely take part in oral activities? Through the research conducted by G. Hofstede about the cultural models associated to each country, and through studies in comparative education, I present the main differences between the French and the Chinese cultures as regards the learning and teaching of French. In a second part, the analysis of individual interviews of young Chinese learners in France shows that personality and individual identity take precedence over the cultural "conditioning" of each learner. Moreover, the discovery and the situation of interculturality necessarily lead to the modification of the learning habits and of the cultural references. These changes are favourable to the learner's decentralization and his/her adaptation to the new methods of learning, as they are practised in France. Consequently, their difficulties and "failures" tend to disappear progressively. But this means that French teachers should be aware of the cultural differences and needs of their learners, and turn interculturality into an advantage

Повний текст джерелаPostoperative endophthalmitis remains a serious sight threatening complication of intraocular surgery. Staphylococcus epidermidis is currently recognized as an important etiological agent of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. It is characterised by its ability to adhere to polymer surfaces such as intraocular lenses (IOLs). The binding of bacteria is the first step in IOL colonization. It is followed by bacterial accumulation in multilayered cell clusters embedded in an exopolysaccharide matrix leading to the formation of a confluent structured biofilm. Biofilm formation on polymer surfaces is a complex process that depends on bacterial cell surface characteristics, on the nature of the polymer material and on environmental factors. Numerous studies have tried to investigate the interactions between bacteria and different types of IOLs so as to determine which biomaterial would be more permissive to bacterial adherence. But large discrepancies were found between the data. Moreover, the lack of similarity between the selected experimental conditions and intraocular physiological ones made it difficult to extrapolate the in vitro results to the clinical situation. To overcome these problems, we designed an in vitro model that more closely resembled intraocular conditions. Our developed model allowed the study of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm formation (from the primary attachment phase to the biofilm maturation phase) on intraocular lenses. It also showed significant differences in bacterial adhesion among IOL materials. Adherence was weakest on the hydrophilic acrylic polymer and strongest on the silicone polymer, more hydrophobic. Bacterial adhesion and biofilm development on the implant surface must therefore depend on biomaterial characteristics particularly on its hydrophobic or hydrophilic nature

Повний текст джерелаLandscape simplification have drastically reduced arthropods biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Plant diversification has already been proved to be very positive for natural enemies notably through the provision of alternative food sources. At the landscape scale, natural habitats have been proved to be very positive for natural enemies and biocontrol. However, the efficacy of natural areas in enhancing biocontrol is more and more controversial. Additionally, farmers willingness to preserve or increase natural habitats in and around their fields is not systematic. Therefore, I decided during my PhD to assess the effect of increasing landscape plant diversity, by manipulating crops only in space and time, on the presence and the performance of natural enemies. In a first part, I assess the economical and social feasibility of increasing crop richness at a landscape scale. Then, in a second part, four different chapters assess the question of crop diversification in space and time on biocontrol at different scales of study. The first chapter shows a study maid at the laboratory scale, which aim is to assess the effect of crop diversification on the predator Harmonia axyridis, on its development and its predation capacity on four different types of aphids. The movement of the predator, hereafter called spillover, regarding the different food sources available is also assessed. The second chapter shows a similar study but laid at a bigger scale (greenhouse) and assesses the population dynamics, the predation capacity and the spillover of a population of Nesidiocoris tenuis regarding differential crop availability in space and time. The third chapter describes two experiments laid at the field scale which aim is to assess the effect of crop diversity, differing in space and time, on the abundance of naturally occurring pests and natural enemies. Abundances of pests and natural enemies was evaluated as a proxy of biocontrol and spillover between patches of crops was assessed in the polycultural treatment. Finally, the last chapter assessed the effect of crop diversity and crop configuration at the landscape scale on the abundance of aphids and aphidophagous predators (coccinellids, lacewings and spiders). The data were collected in the Hebei Province of China. Results at the laboratory and greenhouse scale show that individuals and populations of natural enemies are highly impacted by the functionality of the plant they are exposed to. Indeed, the natural enemies growth in polyculture was the result of the combined effect of the crops tested separately in monoculture. However, the spillover and the biocontrol were highly stimulated in polyculture, sometimes more than in monoculture. At the field scale, ladybirds spillover was higher in polyculture and populations of pests and natural enemies were strongly correlated in polyculture compare to monoculture. Finally, at the field scale, crop diversity had a positive effect on ladybirds abundance and a negative one on aphids abundance. Additionally, fields of small size increased the presence of lacewings. These results show that increasing crop diversity, and decreasing field size, might help to enhance the presence of natural enemies and increase the biocontrol through promoting the spillover of natural enemies between the different cultivated fields

Повний текст джерелаThis research is focused on how globalization affect the way medium size Iranian companies are managed within the international scope? Characteristics associated with cultures and religious beliefs that have influences on performances of medium size Iranian companies are also examined. This research is conducted based on qualitative methods; and is based on theory of constructivism. Constructivism is a theory of knowledge which argues that human beings generate knowledge and meaning from their experiences. Information and data are collected by in-depth and face to face interviews with key managers and directors of relative institutions. According to nature of this research the most suitable type of data analysis is content analysis. 32 managers of medium-size Iranian companies were selected for this research: I selected these managers based on their qualifications and experiences. Questions were semi-structured and open-ended. But sometimes, some participants presented new dimensions to the discussions. Questions were presented to participants and tried to make sure that all participants have contributions and give their own ideas and perspectives.Analyzing the data using conceptual frameworks and theoretical models, we concluded that the interviews clearly show that globalization and its different characteristics do not have negative effects in managing medium size Iranian companies. Although there are a number of Muslim countries and developing countries that do not welcome globalization with open arms, Iran seems to be different and has responded positively. By implementing Hofstede's cultural dimensions for Iran and analyzing its measures compared to other societies, coupled with other models and theories we found out that there are not negative influences of cultures and religions that could lower the performances of12management of medium size Iranian companies when facing different cultural and religious issues. This perspective is more convincing in private sector of the economy

Повний текст джерелаWe have used immunocytochemistry to study the influence of point mutations within the R43 domain of the gamma2 subunit on GABAA receptors expression. Our particular interest was the gamma2(R43Q) mutation that has been linked to epilepsy in humans, and which has caused considerable controversy in literature. Our results reveal that this domain is a major determinant in the targeting of complexes, since all the mutant subunits obtained were less detected on the surface of transfected neurons or COS-7 cells than their wild-type counterpart. Moreover, we show, in contradiction with previous work, that the gamma2(R43Q) mutation does not lead to the synthesis of a dominant negative protein that retains the receptors in the intracellular compartments. Finally, data obtained in co-immunoprecipitation experiments suggested that the mutated subunit disturbed the assembly and/or stoichiometry of GABAA receptors. On this basis before, and in agreement with other studies, we postulate that the gamma2(R43Q) mutation modifies tonic conductances that are necessary for the normal functioning of neuronal networks

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis examines the cinema which was produced in France during the Occupation (1940-1944) through the young actors and actresses, commonly referred to as romantic leads, it features. Using the theories and methods initiated by gender studies, cultural studies and star studies as by cultural history, this work intends to show how those figures of young actors and actresses reflect the sociocultural context of the Occupation, from the point of view of gender and generation relations. Using five case studies of actors and actresses who are representative of the renewal of youth figures in the films produced at the time (Marie Déa, Odette Joyeux, Micheline Presle, Madeleine Sologne and Jean Marais), this work shows that those romantic leads combine reassuring and traditional features with seditious, modern features. Thanks to this union of contradictory characteristics, they met a large and diverse audience whose interests, concerns and political sensitivities differed, at a period when the ideological control was strict, especially over young people and women, but when gender and generation hierarchic relations were challenged. This work is based on the analysis of the films, but also on their critical reception and on the way the popular press of the time constructed the image of the actors and actresses

Повний текст джерелаTissue engineering aims to develop functional tissues or organs in vitro in order to provide drug testing platforms or transplantable tissues and improve the treatments provided to patients. However, the physiological tissue structures developed to date do not integrate and perfusable vascular network. In vivo, the vascular network supplies the body’s cells with oxygen and nutrients and removes cellular waste and carbon dioxide. It also has a major role in maintaining organ homeostasis. Blood capillaries are hollow vessels whose walls are only composed of a layer of endothelial cells and diffuse nutrients. The blood capillary network is dense and perfuse all tissues. Due to the limit oxygen diffusion inside tissues, each cell is located at most 200µm away from a capillary. The difficulties of building a network of perfusable capillaries and integrating them into tissue constructs limit the development of thick physiological tissues. An innovative technique for developing a microvascular network within a thick construction is presented in this thesis. This technique consists of assembling spherical tissue micro-units within a microfluidic chamber, and developing a network of capillaries through the interstitial pores formed by the spheres packing. Tissue micro-units are composed of biopolymers representative of the extracellular matrix and contain cells from the tissue of interest. A layer of endothelial cells is developed on the surface of these microspheres. The stacking of these microspheres creates a porous medium in which nutrient medium is perfused. Flow control within such a structure allows the application of physical stimuli influencing the self-assembly of endothelial cells into capillaries within the interstitial space of the sphere packing.During this thesis, a device for manufacturing microspheres from natural biopolymers was developed. The structure formed by the stacks of spheres was studied and the flow within such environments were characterized so as to apply controlled physical stimuli to cells. A bioreactor-like perfusion system has been built. A thick tissue structure could be formed within this system and the development of the vascular network was promoted. The formation of the network was demonstrated by the presence of infused blood capillaries within the structure. The technique developed promises to be applied to the development of many tissues and applications for organ-on-chip or tissue engineering devices
