Culture is an important topic of the present time. It is at the heart of contemporary debates about identity, social cohesion, and the development of a knowledge-based economy. The international organizations, like UNESCO, OECD, Council of Europe, as well as European Commission are affirming, that respect for the diversity of cultures, tolerance, dialogue and cooperation, in a climate of mutual trust and understanding, are among the best guarantees of international peace and security. Therefore the cultural and creative sectors are considered as very important in European Union countries. The rapid development of the digital age has led humans to adapt new habits in communication. Communication activities are even very easy to do through digital platforms such as Instagram social media. Virtual communication activities conducted through halal culinary content are considered capable of creating information exchange. It is this exchange of information that makes participation happen virtually. Participation can not be considered as an activity without meaning, but when participation is done repeatedly, then the participation activity becomes a form of culture that has a certain meaning and interest. This research reveals virtual communication conducted by Muslim Instagram users who are actively producing kulier (Muslim foodgram) content through halal culinary content. The virtual ethnographic method was used by researchers to examine Henry Jenkins' theory of participation culture combined with smith's concept of researcher meaning. Based on the results of the study conducted for approximately eight months, researchers obtained data that virtual communication activities conducted by Muslim foodgrams are divided into several forms of participation such as affiliation, expression, collaboration, and circulation. not only a form of participation, researchers found that participation activities carried out by Muslim foodgrams through virtual communication occur continuously to form a culture. Participation culture formed from virtual communication activities include participation based on appreciation, participation based on existence, participation based on pleasure. The establishment of a culture of participation in virtual communication turns out to contain several meanings such as reputational interests, self-image, awards, hobbies, to careers. Budaya partisipasi yang terbentuk dari aktifitas komunikasi virtual meliputi participation based on appreciation, participation based on existence, participation based on pleasure. Terbentuknya budaya partisipasi dalam komunikasi virtual ternyata mengandung beberapa makna seperti kepentingan reputasi, citra diri, penghargaan, hobi, hingga karir.

The democratic processes that constantly accompany modern society lead to an increase in the activity of ordinary citizens in all spheres. There is a transition from impersonal production to individualized production, from passive consumption to active participation in the creation of various cultural products. Therefore, active and meaningful human participation in socio-political, cultural and artistic processes, which shifts attention from inert consumption to participation in decision-making, or the creation of cultural or artistic projects, or the collective formation of new meanings and values, is defined by foreign researchers as “participatory culture”, and by Ukrainian researchers as “culture of participation”, “co- creation”. It is understood as an urgent requirement for almost every social phenomenon, from grassroots democracy to the implementation of artistic strategies. Participation implies an interest in certain joint activities for self-realization and satisfaction, which is realized through the implementation of own ideas and creative plans, and in the artistic space, the culture of participation leads to co-creation of the creator and the viewer, active co-creation. Artistic cultural practices (street art, immersive theater) are seen as not only offering interactivity, but also giving the viewer subjectivity, making him or her visible through personal experience of perception, feelings, emotions, and experiences. Despite the fact that the participants of a joint creative act often produce not cultural artifacts, but only meanings, a new meaning-making is created, and thus new ways of producing culture are born in joint creativity.

Recent research has highlighted the emergence of “alternative social media” platforms. Developed by open source communities with non-commercial goals, these platforms can offer more expansive participatory cultures than corporate platforms. However, such platforms also involve new kinds of participatory challenges, such as requiring high technological literacy. This article examines the complexity of enacting participatory cultures by drawing on an ethnographic study of Scuttlebutt, a decentralized social media platform being developed by an open source community. This examination focuses on three key features of participatory culture as enacted on Scuttlebutt: varying modes and sites of participation; reflexivity about who is participating and how; and an evaluation of limits to participation. It also considers the challenges that arise from Scuttlebutt’s approach and how these highlight the profound difficulty of trying to enact fuller models of participatory culture. From these findings, we argue that Scuttlebutt provides an important example of the experimentation that alternative social media platforms are conducting around open, democratic modes of socio-technical organizing, and note that this experimentation raises important questions about how we conceptualize participation and the future of social media.

Abstract Barkley L. Hendricks’s (1945-2017) portraiture is considered in relation to camp’s liminal nature. Hendricks employs the camp techniques of surface emphasis, and affective audience engagement, to relay a political message of black agency. His portraiture is framed with dynamics of MFSB, a popular culture movement developed in his hometown, Philadelphia, during the era of the 1970s. The paper brings to light Hendricks’s participation within the complex histories of imaging the black body. His participation defies the hegemonies inherent within these histories and, at the same time, reifies them.

The aim of the text is to sketch the dynamics of contemporary culture, focussing on the concept of participation. General remarks are accompanied by illustrations taken from ethnographic study on music lovers faced with evolution of musical media (vinyl records, CDs, files). Following Marek Krajewski, the author rejects the traditional notion of “participation”, and uses his redefinition of the term. He stresses three dimensions of cultural participation: 1. participation as socialization; 2. participation as reshaping the participants themselves, which makes material traces; 3. participation as metaparticipation, ie. the modifying of the conditions of participation. At the same time, three crucial dimensions of the notion of “culture” are taken into consideration, which enables us to analyze the participation understood in the proposed way from a triple perspective: 1. participation takes place within culture, culture enables participation to occur; 2. culture is a resource used in the process of participation; 3. culture as “something beyond interaction” emerges in the course of participation. The author argues that thinking of participation in this way, the contemporary culture is to be viewed as clash between many heterogeneous forces, where constructing and maintaining stable areas is the exception rather than a rule. This is why it is so important to study of how the orders of participation are stabilized. Various forms of institutionalized reflexivity are ubiquitous in contemporary culture. Our culture is tyrannized by information, and the acceleration connected to it.

The quality level of university education can be evaluated by various indicators, but the most important thing is whether the university’s educational subjects practice a high level of education in terms of quantity and quality. However, college students form a specific culture related to attitude, norms, and values for class participation and interact with professors, and the quality level and specific appearance of education may vary depending on the characteristics of the culture. Therefore, it is necessary to examine what thoughts and feelings college students have about participating in class, what activities they value in class, and how these perceptions and practices affect educational relations. In this study, professors, assistants, and students of A university were selected as participants to examine the aspects of conflict among college students’ participation in classes and educational relationships. Through the research methods of participation observation, in-depth interviews, and local data surveys, the daily activities and contexts of class participation were specifically understood, and related data were constructed and analyzed. Based on these research results, it was suggested that qualitative indicators showing the characteristics of student culture in class participation should be specified to support university members to share and reflect on their activities, and to provide various channels for professors and students to participate in education. This study aims to contribute to exploring the changes and adjustments necessary for the practice of better educational relationships by specifically understanding the student culture of class participation from an insider perspective.

A report on a successfully implemented program to increase student participation in extra-curricular activities in an undergraduate business program with a high percentage of first-generation college students. A market-research study offered insight as to why students were not participating before the program was launched. Greater participation in extra-curricular activities was used as a means to provide valuable career preparation and to develop professional habits. Participation was encouraged with very small rewards tied to existing courses, consistent with the nudging mechanism of behavioral economics.

As a new literary form in China, Transmedia fictions are constantly impacting the status of traditional paper novels. Participation culture is an important feature of Transmedia fictions, and it plays an important role in transmedia creation and communication modes. As a representative of mass culture and grassroots culture, Transmedia fictions continuously increase their influence in people's spiritual and cultural life and impact the status of traditional elite culture through a very participatory creative process and communication process. Through the study of the participating culture in Chinese Transmedia fictions, we can have a deeper understanding of the characteristics of this literary form, which will promote the future development of world literature.

Diverse studies try to identify the influencing factors of success and failure for international Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A). In this context, especially the role of participation and culture is being discussed controversially. The following article tries to shed some light on the debate, based on a quantitative research conducted in Bulgaria and Romania. In both countries organizational members were surveyed who were involved in an international M&A-process initiated by a German based multinational company. The results show that participation is understood and valued differently in both countries.

How do we define participation during a pandemic? Are we in an era that requires reinventing our physical space and our modes of participation to build a new society? The novel coronavirus has deconstructed social space as we know it, and significantly disrupted our participation in its spheres. Today we are witnessing new forms of space, in the light of the ongoing pandemic and its impact on our participation, physical space and digital culture. This article demonstrates changes that occur in the physical and connected spaces that form our “new virtual urbanism” (Doueihi, 2011). It describes participation practices in natural parks in a Geneva-Switzerland and the Pays de Gex-France, distinguishing three types of spaces: the pre-pandemic space, the confinement space and the deconfinement space. It shows how socio-cultural practices changed in relation to the configuration of the space and the use of digital technology. Will we need to reinvent our space to encourage participation? The answer lies perhaps in considering the development of our digital traces and harvesting them in organized projects with rules, purpose, administration, management and governance. In this sense, digital participation becomes full and efficient when it relies on the process of building a memory and includes those who find themselves excluded from this new world.

Abstract Given the importance of assessment in higher education, it is critical to understand how to promote faculty engagement in assessment initiatives in institutions of higher education. This qualitative study identified factors that are associated with positive faculty satisfaction with assessment endeavors and those factors that reduce faculty satisfaction with these activities. Data revealed that faculty satisfaction varied across academic programs. Factors that promoted assessment included assessment methodologies, resources, support, participation, and effective leadership. Factors that reduced faculty satisfaction included the lack of comparative data across institutions, increased workload, and the continuous change in assessment plans.

This article explores the social distribution of involvement in highbrow culture in light of three issues being discussed in cultural sociology. One is that highbrow cultural orientation is an indicator of cultural capital or of social status. A second, the ‘meltdown scenario’, suggests that not only the popularity of highbrow activities, but also their distinctiveness, has decreased among younger cohorts in comparison to older cohorts. A third deals with the ‘feminization’ of highbrow culture. These issues are empirically addressed in contemporary Finland using nationally representative survey data. Highbrow culture is measured in three dimensions of cultural practices – knowledge, taste and participation – covering four different fields: music, literature, cinema and the visual arts. The results support all three arguments: First, education and occupational class are important social determinants of involvement in highbrow culture in Finland. Second, younger age cohorts show less interest in highbrow culture than do older Finns. Third, women tend to be more involved in highbrow culture than men. The results indicate considerable stability across the measures of highbrow culture and cultural fields. Social determinants of knowledge and cinema, however, are different from those in other dimensions and fields.

The author attempts to connect the category of lifestyle with that of participation in culture. In order to do this two continuums are used which correspond to the character of participation in culture (from recipient to creator) and the form of participation institutional and beyond institution). As a result of the superimposition of the two axes, four fields are obtained within which the practices of participation in culture by the individual may be placed. The model obtained in this manner allows the multidimensional description of the issues of the participation in culture and at the same time may be used as tool in the analysis of lifestyles.

The purpose of this paper was to determine the frequency of Music Culture teachers’ participation in different types of informal lifelong learning activities, as well as to find out their opinions on the importance and contribution of the above-mentioned points to thedevelopment of their own competencies necessary for teaching Music Culture. It is concluded that teachers participate the most in informal learning activities which do not require dedication of additional time and accordingly, they participate less frequently in activities which require more of their attention. They feel competent in performing all musical activities. Furthermore, they see benefits and the importance of participating in informal learning activities, however, their opinions are divided when considering whether they should dedicate additional time to informal learning and when deciding whether their teaching would be of the same quality if they did not apply the new knowledge acquired through informal learning.

ABSTRACTBackground:The aim of this study is to examine a relationship between a change in social activity and depression among Koreans aged 45 years or more. Methods:Data came from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) (2006–2010), with 5,327 participants aged 45 years or more. The generalized estimating equation (GEE) with the logit link was used to investigate an association between a change in social activity during 2006–2008 (or 2008–2010) and depression among respondents in year 2008 (or Y2010). Depression was measured by Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D10) and a change in social activity was classified with four categories, i.e. “consistent participation”, “consistent non-participation”, “participation to non-participation”, and “non-participation to participation”. Social activity was divided into various elements and the same analysis was conducted for each of these elements. Results:Those with consistent non-participation and from participation to non-participation were more likely to be depressed than those with consistent participation and from non-participation to participation in social activities (OR 1.44 [95% CI 1.22–1.71], OR 1.35 [95% CI 1.15–1.58] vs. OR 1.00 [Reference], OR 1.27 [95% CI 1.09–1.48]). In addition, the strength of the negative association between consistent or new participation in social activity and depression was different across different elements of social activity. The negative association was particularly strong for leisure, culture or sports clubs, and for family or school reunion. Conclusion:For improving the mental health of the population aged 45 years or more, the promotion of their continued or new participations in leisure/culture clubs and family/school reunion might be needed in South Korea.

This paper considers changes caused by new technologies that enable an increasing participation of average Internet users in the field of cultural production. From the perspective of pyramidal participation, different forms of achieving user participation in culture are presented, according to the level of freedom they achieve, that is the structure of the relationships in participation. The main argument of the paper is that development of culture can be accelerated by increasing participation in cultural production. Accordingly, a link between participation pyramid and the competencies related to transmedia literacy is made, in order to point out the potential that transmedia literacy can have for enriching global culture.

Participatory agenda in arts and culture represents a cutting-edge issue in the discourse of cultural policy. It has been seen as one which could fulfil the widening gap between the promise and failure of cultural democracy and influence democratic deficiencies that culture is facing. This paper focuses on clarification of the term participation and participatory governance in culture from its theoretical origin to its articulations and interpretations in the field of culture specifically. Methodologically, the paper builds on the analysis of literature and policy framework. In the literature analysis of the diverse conceptualisations of the participation in the field of culture, most specifically, participation in the sense of power devolution, the paper explores the repository of work by Milena Dragićević-Šešić and her contributions to the theoretical framework of the participation discussion. These contributions unravel the legacies and understandings of participation and participatory governance in culture and cultural policy from the perspective of (post)transitional context and countries in development.

Abstract Participation in online spaces has afforded new fan cultures (Baym, Burnett 2009; Jenkins 2018) and enabled new communities of networked individuals (Rainie, Wellman 2012; Burgess, Jones 2020). Online participation also generates participatory cultures, which allow audiences unprecedented opportunity to connect with each other and with the media they share. However, it has also generated some decidedly anti-social and anti-democratic movements, such as QAnon (Amarasingam, Argentino 2020). In this commentary, we argue that QAnon can be thought of as a participatory fan culture gone awry. Using QAnon’s entry into mainstream culture in 2020 as a case study, we explore the darker implications of online participatory culture, including misinformation, conspiratorial- thinking, and an undermining of shared realities. Lastly, we propose that these issues are made more explicit and difficult to attend to in a media sphere characterized by dominant neo-liberal corporate control of participatory media, and digital dualism.

This paper highlights ways in which marginalisation of women in forest management participation is happening within community-based forest certification programmes. Drawing from interviews, focus group discussions and observation with men and women in Kilwa District, the paper examines how women are excluded from participating in forest-related activities and in leadership positions. It reveals discourses which institutionalise marginalisation and shows how these discourses have re-produced culture, distance and time as the main constraints to women’s participation in forest management. The paper’s main contribution is to show how the factors which lead to women’s exclusion are woven and become normalized in everyday discourses and continue to exclude women. We show how the institutionalisation of women exclusion from forest marginalisation happens even in the very programmes which claim to bring equal participation of men and women.
