ABSTRACT Identifying effective weed control regimes for organic peanut is paramount for improving the feasibility of organic production. Tine cultivation is a proven effective method for reducing in-row weed populations in several crops. Field trials were therefore conducted in 2008 and 2009 to assess the effects of tine cultivation combined with sweep cultivation and supplemental hand-weeding on weed control and overall productivity of two peanut cultivars under organic management. Tine cultivation regimes consisted of two frequencies (once per week or twice per week) for three durations (3 wk, 4 wk, or 5 wk). All cultivation treatments were also cultivated with flat sweeps at least once and hand-weeded periodically during the growing season. A non-cultivated, non-weeded control was included for comparison. All cultivation treatments significantly reduced annual grass populations in 2008 and Florida pusley populations both years. Cultivated treatments also resulted in denser plant stands for peanut (9.2 plants/m to 13.2 plants/m) than the non-cultivated control (5.9 plants/m to 7.9 plants/m). Pod yields in cultivated treatments ranged from 3502 kg/ha to 3823 kg/ha and were all significantly greater than yields in the non-cultivated control (1630 kg/ha). Also, net revenues generated by cultivated treatments ranged from ($3333/ha to $3637/ha) and were greater than that of the control ($1795/ha). Cultivation frequency had little effect on weed control and peanut productivity. However, the 4- and 5-wk durations displayed potential for improving peanut yield, grade, and net revenue over the 3-wk duration, especially when annual grass weeds were predominant. Cultivating once weekly for 4 or 5 wk with a tine cultivator, along with at least one sweep cultivation and supplemental hand-weeding, is a viable, economical option for providing adequate weed control and maximizing productivity of organically-managed peanut at current market premiums.

In the paper the influence of diferent simplified tillage per number and seeds botanical composition of weeds in 0-25 cm of soil layer under plants crop rotation (potato-spring barley-winter rape-winter wheat) on erodible loess soil was presented. The simplifications in soil tillage relied on replaceing ploughing by cultivation, rotary cultivator tillage or Gramoxone formula. The replaceing ploughing by cultivations or rotary cultivator tillage especially bringing in chemical tillage instead of after-harvest cultivation increasing the number of weeds seed under all plants excluding spring barley. Resource of weeds seed under all plants of crop rotation were formated mainly by short duration species, especially Chenopodium album and Viola arvensis as well as Stellaria media (potato, barley, wheat) and Veronica persica (wheat). It was proven that the number of weeds seed in 0-25 cm of soil layer on erodible loess slope depended from plant species more than the way of soil tillage.

Pakcoy is a type of vegetable plant belonging to the Brassica family. Pakcoy plants can be cultivated using hydroponic techniques, namely plant cultivation techniques without soil media. The advantage of cultivating Pakcoy plants using hydroponic techniques is that it does not require a large area of land, so it is easy to apply in the yard. However, cultivation with hydroponic techniques has drawbacks such as farmers need to make regular observations to determine the harvest readiness of each plant. This causes a lack of effectiveness of farmers in cultivating Pakcoy plants. With the development of Machine Learning technology, a model can classify the maturity of Pakcoy plants based on digital image data. By applying the Support Vector Machine (SVM) Algorithm, the Machine Learning model can learn to classify a digital image of Pakcoy plants with the category "Small" to represent immature Pakcoy plants and "Large" to represent mature Pakcoy plants which results in an accuracy level of above 79%. It can be concluded that Machine Learning can be implemented in Pakcoy cultivation activities to support hydroponic farmers.

Directive (EU) 2015/412 allows Member States to restrict the cultivation of genetically modified seed or propagating material, although their placing on the market has been authorized. This so-called opt-out is meant to resolve the current Member States’ conflict about gene technology by facilitating differences of states concerning cultivation regulations. The concept has at the same time the potential to pioneer a general reorientation of European and even global principles of free trade. Where as trade restrictions on grounds of health and environmental protection could thus far only be justified on a strict scientific basis, a variety of risk perceptions and evaluations are now made acceptable. The article explores what grounds may justify cultivation restrictions beyond those identified in a concrete environmental risk assessment. Two categories are suggested: general environmental concerns weighing systemic effects and uncertainty, and trans-environmental concerns such as the use-value of genetically modified plants, the avoidance of costs resulting from policies of coexistence with conventional plants, the halting of agricultural industrialisation, and ethical considerations. It is further examined if cultivation restrictions based on such grounds are compatible with the EU rules of free movement of goods and relevant WTO agreements. The pertinent report of a WTO-Panel on genetically modified plants is scrutinized for this purpose and a dissenting interpretation developed.

Indonesia is among the countries producing medicinal plants (TO) for domestic and foreign demand. Nevertheless, Indonesia keeps importing a variety of TO kinds. One reason for this is farmer's lack of interest in cultivating medicinal plants, which is interesting to observe considering that, in terms of market share, ecology, and geography, all of them support the development of medicinal plant cultivation. This cross-sectional study with observations and interviews aims to get primary data to identify the factors causing the lacking interest of farmers in cultivating medicinal plants. In October 2018, we conducted our data collection. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) provided secondary data on the production and trade of medicinal plants from 2009 to 2020. We did descriptive data analysis. The results showed several factors caused farmers to be less interested in cultivating medicinal plants. Expense fluctuations, the length of the planting period, technology, and access to marketing, until the government's attention has not been optimized are the contributing factors. It should make efforts to increase the interest of farmers in cultivating medicinal plants. There are ways to encourage people to grow medicinal plants as their primary source of income, including stable prices, market accessibility, efficient cultivation, and post-harvest technology.

Chili plants often fail to harvest in the cultivation process due to improper irrigation. Soil temperature and humidity are essential parameters that affect the amount of water needed by plants in the watering process. This research aimed to apply fuzzy logic to the chili plants' irrigation system. The function of this system was to regulate watering due to the needs of the Chili plant automatically in a real-time fashion. The Sugeno fuzzy inference system (FIS) is embedded in a microcontroller to regulate the water based on the plant's needs appropriately. The system was tested on Chili plants located in the iSurf Computer Science Lab IPB University greenhouse. After four days of testing, the soil moisture sensor results were stable at optimal conditions, between 60%-80% after watering. It shows that the irrigation system has automatically regulated watering due to the Chili plant's needs.

Pseudosclerotia (infected, mummified fruit) of Monilinia vacciniicorymbosi overwinter on the orchard floor and germinate to produce apothecia in early spring, providing the only source of primary inoculum for mummy berry disease of blueberry. Three experiments were carried out to develop a model for the relative efficacy of mechanical cultivation in reducing the risk associated with primary inoculum. In the first experiment, apothecial emergence from pseudosclerotia buried 0, 1.5, 3, 6, and 10 cm below the soil surface was monitored to determine the critical depth necessary to inhibit emergence. No apothecia emerged from pseudosclerotia buried at depths of ≥3 cm, and the critical depth of burial was determined at 2.6 cm by regression analysis. In the second experiment, pseudosclerotia or plastic beads (used as surrogates for pseudosclerotia) were placed on the soil surface of experimental plots before cultivation with an in-row rotary cultivator, a disc harrow, or a rotary cultivator with each implement operated in a single pass. Vertical distribution profiles of pseudosclerotia or beads in the topsoil were characterized after excavation with a custom-built sampling device. The proportion of pseudosclerotia placed below the critical depth of 2.6 cm was 20.9, 52.6, and 78.6% for the in-row rotary cultivator, the disc harrow, and the rotary cultivator, respectively. For all three implements, vertical distribution profiles of pseudosclerotia and plastic beads were very similar, allowing the latter to be used in subsequent experiments in commercial fields. In the third experiment, two blueberry plantings were surveyed to determine the horizontal distribution of pseudosclerotia on the orchard floor with distance from the crowns of the plants. The greatest frequency of pseudosclerotia occurred between 30 and 40 cm from the plants. Based on measurements of the distance from plants within which different implements can operate, the proportion of pseudosclerotia accessible by cultivation ranged from 58.7% for the disc harrow to 87.2% for the in-row rotary cultivator. Taken together, results from the three experiments indicated that cultivation with a single implement can reduce risk of apothecial emergence by about 50%. More effective risk reductions may be obtained by combining implements that result in deep burial of pseudosclerotia with those that have access to pseudosclerotia near the plants. This was demonstrated by a commercial cultivation method that utilized three passes of different implements and resulted in extensive reshaping of plant beds, placing 88.2% of beads below the critical depth of 2.6 cm.

A 3-year study was conducted in irrigated potato to compare weed control efficacy and economics of hilling plus one or two cultivations with the standard treatment of hilling plus a preemergence application of pendimethalin plus metribuzin. Trials were conducted under both weedy and weed-free conditions. Common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed were present in weedy treatments each year; significant populations of hairy nightshade and green foxtail also were present one year. When weed populations were low or moderate (< 45 plants/m2), total weed biomass in the hilling plus one cultivation treatment was reduced 98 to 99% relative to the weedy control, and U.S. No. 1 tuber yields were equal to the standard treatment. However, when weed populations were high (145 plants/m2), hilling plus one cultivation and hilling plus two cultivations provided only 30% and 61% reduction in weed biomass, respectively, and U.S. No. 1 tuber yields were 35% and 13% less, respectively, than the standard treatment. The standard treatment provided 99% reduction in total weed biomass each year, and yields were equal to the weed-free, hill plus no cultivation control. Net return was $37 to $100/ha higher for the hilling plus one cultivation treatment compared to the standard treatment when weed populations were moderate or low, but was $808/ha less than the standard treatment when weed populations were high.

In order to solve the effects of environmental factors on the droplet settlement of a nutrient solution on plant roots when planting plants with ultrasonic aeroponic cultivation, this study aimed to obtain a suitable wind speed range and atomization time through a nutrient solution atomization experiment, to obtain the best control scheme through a multi-environmental parameter combination cultivation experiment. Taking an ultrasonic aeroponic cultivation device as the research object, and lettuce as the test material, experiments were carried out on two factors affecting the wind speed of an axial fan and the atomization time of the nutrient amount of ultrasonic aeroponic cultivation plants; the suitable wind speed range was 1.0–2.5 m/s. The temperatures of the lettuce root zones in the upper, middle, and lower layers of the ultrasonic aeroponic cultivation device at different time periods were obtained by atomizing the nutrient solution. When the optimum temperature for the root growth of lettuce was 15–20 °C and the wind speed was 1.0–2.5 m/s, the continuous atomization time of the nutrient solution was 66–184 min. Using a quadratic orthogonal rotation combination design method, three main factors, namely wind speed, ambient temperature, and atomization time, were selected to test droplet settlement in the lettuce roots. The droplet settlement in the lettuce root system was measured. The droplet settlement regression equation in the lettuce root system was established. The reliability of the regression model was tested according to the significance condition, and a simplified quadratic orthogonal regression equation was obtained. The main effect analysis, single factor analysis, and interaction effect analysis were used to analyze the model, and the model was further verified. The verification results showed that the relative error between the predicted value and the actual value of the average root droplet sedimentation was 5.8%. The optimum wind speed was 2.5 m/s, the ambient temperature was 16 °C, and the atomization time was 184 min when the ultrasonic aeroponic cultivation device designed in this study was used to cultivate lettuce. It could provide a theoretical reference and an experimental basis for the control of the related growth environment parameters of plants cultivated using ultrasonic aeroponic cultivation.

The authors of the article propose the design of a row cultivator, equipped with combined working bodies, which makes it possible to carry out inter-row weed control in one pass with full cultivation of the protective zones of grown crops. The soil drop distance and the distance between the flat discs located in the adjacent gangs of the row cultivator for thorough covering weed plants with a layer of soilwithout damage to cultivated plants have been substantiated theoretically.

The Precision Cultural System (PCS) developed by the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station allows simple and precise cultivation of vegetable crops; however, speed of the cultivators in small vegetable crops has been limited. The standard PCS sweep cultivator was limited to about 1.6–2.4 km·h–1 in small crops because it would throw soil over the crop plants at higher speed. The standard PCS rotary tiller cultivator could operate at 3.2–4.8 km·h–1 in small crops but could not be operated faster in larger crops, due to its tendency to “walk” out of the soil at higher speeds. The standard PCS sweep cultivator was modified by replacing the sweeps between the twin drills with two pairs of straight finger-wheel (“rolling cultivator”) spiders non-angled and in tandem. The finger-wheel gangs on the bed sides were also inactivated by raising them above the soil. The resulting PCS cultivator was successfully operated in very small crop plants (≤25 mm high) at speeds of 8–10 km·h–1 with no crop damage. The cultivator could then be easily refitted for standard sweep cultivation on subsequent passes. No reductions in weed control or yield of mustard, kale, turnip, or spinach were noted when using the high-speed system.

The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes dates back well before the era of modern medicine, but in recent years research into the use of medical cannabis in the medical and pharmaceutical sciences has grown significantly. In European countries, most cannabis plants have been and still are grown for industrial purposes. For this reason, hemp cultivation technology is relatively well researched, while little is known about the key factors affecting cannabis cultivation for medical purposes. The active substances of cannabis plant targeted by this review are called phytocannabinoids. The biosynthesis of phytocannabinoids is relatively well understood, but the specific environmental factors that influence the type and number of phytocannabinoids have been much less studied. Indoor or greenhouse cultivation, which uses automated lighting, ventilation, irrigation systems and complex plant nutrition has become much more sophisticated and appears to be the most effective method for producing medical cannabis. There are many different cultivation systems for cannabis plants, but one of the essential elements of the process is an optimal plant nutrition and selection of fertilisers to achieve it. This review summarises the existing knowledge about phytocannabinoid biosynthesis and the conditions suitable for growing plants as sources of medical cannabis. This review also attempts to delineate how nutrient type and bioavailability influences the synthesis and accumulation of specific phytocannabinoids based on contemporary knowledge of the topic.

In this study, five plant species, members of the Lamiaceae family, namely Salvia officinalis L., Salvia rosmarinus Spenn, Mentha × piperita L., Mentha spicata L. and Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum (Link) Ietswaart, were studied for the influence of harvesting time on the herb crop yield, the volatile compounds (EOs) content/yield and their chemical composition. EOs were isolated by means of hydro-distillation from different plant parts at different growth stages. Their components were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The highest yields of EOs were obtained at the full flowering stage and important changes were observed in their composition. The fluctuations in the percentage composition of the major compounds in the EOs, throughout harvesting time, were observed at camphor/α-thujone for S. officinalis, camphor/1,8-cineole for S. rosmarinus, linalool/linalyl acetate and carvone/limonene for M. × piperita and M. spicata, respectively. The chemotype of O. vulgare subsp. hirtum was identified as carvacrol. The optimization of harvesting time could lead to increased crop production and better EOs quality control, with numerous industrial benefits upon the commercial production of such products.

The principles of good agricultural and horticultural practice, which considers both environmental protection and high yielding of plants, require modern methods of cultivation. Cover crops are used in the cultivation of various plants, including root vegetables such as carrot. The purpose of field and laboratory studies was to determine the effect of selected cover crops on the healthiness of carrot (Daucus carota L.). The field experiment took into consideration cover crops such as spring rye, white mustard, buckwheat, fodder sunflower and two systems of soil tillage, i.e.: tillage before winter (ploughing) + spring tillage (a combined cultivator) and only spring tillage (a combined cultivator). In each experimental treatment, the number and healthiness of carrot seedlings were determined. A laboratory mycological analysis made it possible to determine the qualitative and quantitative composition of fungi infecting the underground parts of carrot. Good emergencies and the healthiness of carrot plants were observed in the objects with rye and white mustard as cover crops. The cultivation system had no significant effect on the proportion of diseased seedlings of carrot. Rye and white mustard were more effective than buckwheat and sunflower in limiting the occurrence of fungi pathogenic towards carrot. Diseased seedlings and roots after harvest of carrot were most frequently colonized by Altenaria alternata, A. chartarum, A. dauci, A. radicina, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium spp.

The cultivation of plants under the covers made of synthetic polymers brings many benefits, however, it is associated with the need to utilize or recycle these materials after the period of their use. Such problems are not caused by the covers made of natural polymers. The aim of the study carried out in the years 2013–2014 was to determine an effect of covers made of biopolymers and synthetic polymers on thermal conditions and potato yield. Field study was carried out under sandy loam and silty clay loam soils conditions. The temperature of silty clay loam soil under the covers was on average by 2.9°C higher than in the unprotected area, whereas sandy loam soil had the temperature higher by 2.5°C under biodegradable foil and by 2.7°C under standard foil. Temperature increase under non-woven fabrics was lower than under foils. The highest increase in marketable tuber yield after 40 days from emergence and in full maturity of potato plants was found after at application of standard non-woven fabric P17 (7.2 and 7.4 t/ha, respectively) and the lowest, i.e., 3.0 and 3.4 t/ha, respectively, under biodegradable foil. Cover type had no effect on the number of tubers formed on the first harvest date, whereas a significantly higher number of tubers was recorded in the full maturity of plants in the year characterized by a longer growing period of potato under non-woven P17 on sandy loam soil, and under biodegradable foil on silty clay loam soil conditions. A significant influence of cover on the average tuber weight on the first harvest date was found only on sandy loam soil under non-woven fabrics in 2013, as compared to full maturity of plants under biodegradable covers on sandy loam soil in 2013 and on silty clay loam soil under all covers in 2014.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the potential of vegetable soybean (Edamame) cultivation in Lithuania. Six soybean varieties were grown in an open field. Our data showed that the plants of the ‘Chiba Green’ variety were the shortest. Such plants had higher chlorophyll index and photosynthesis intensity. Variety ‘Midori Giant’ had more branches than plants of other varieties. The highest yield was produced by the plants of the ‘Chiba Green’ variety. Higher protein content was found in beans of the ‘Chiba Green’ variety. However, there were no differences found in soluble carbohydrates and micro- and macroelement contents between the varieties. In summary, the results revealed that of the tested varieties, the most suitable and useful for the cultivation under Lithuanian climate conditions was the ‘Chiba Green’ vegetable soybean variety.

Soil disturbance, irrigation, and nitrogen fertilization excesses in lettuce crops have reduced the sustainability of the sector and favoured competition against weeds. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cover crops and nitrogen fertilization management on weed control, weed-species dynamics, and soil seed bank in successive lettuce cultivation under no-tillage. The experiment was carried out in a tropical region during summer and arranged in a (3×4) +1 factorial scheme. Treatments consisted of three soil cover managements (Crotalaria juncea, Urochloa ruziziensis, and fallow) and four nitrogen (N) topdressing rates (0, 60, 120, and 180 kg ha−1) in a lettuce crop under fertigation. A conventional tillage system under more intense soil disturbance was also evaluated at the highest N rate. The results showed that lettuce cultivation on U. ruziziensis stood out regarding weed control. Higher soil disturbance in the conventional tillage increased weed emergence (288.9 and 245.8 plants m−2) compared to the fallow area (13.9 and 38.9 plants m−2), U. ruziziensis (4.2 and 9.7 plants m−2), and C. juncea (56.9 and 20.8 plants m−2) in successive cultivations, respectively. Soil cover management changed the dynamics of weed species emergence, especially in the first cultivation. Nitrogen topdressings did not affect weed dry matter and density at the time of weeding. The average number of non-dormant weed seeds within the 0.0-0.10 m soil seed bank layer reached 7,077 seeds m−2, with no difference among treatments. Therefore, sustainable management of lettuce cultivation using cover crops in rotation, associated with no-tillage, effectively controls weed communities, with emphasis on U. ruziziensis, regardless of the nitrogen fertilization management

In the present paper, we investigate the reduction of the toxicity of Cr in the sensitive plants by the mixed crop cultivation in the field using various amendments. Further, the potassium dichromate was used as the source of hexavalent Cr. The results indicated that Cr adversely affects both the growth and yield of plants. The soil properties vary with Cr and different fertilizer amendments and the yield of both plants were affected by Cr. We conclude that metal accumulation of seeds of green gram was higher than corn and the application of single fertilizer either farm yard manure (FYM) or nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium (NPK) enhances the growth and yield of both the tolerant and sensitive plants in the mixed crop cultivations.

Environmental contextBioaccumulation of nanoparticles in plants used for food and feed could be a major exposure pathway to nanoparticles, resulting in ecological and health risks. Isotopic labelling of nanoparticles enables their sensitive tracing in the presence of background elements in complex plant matrices. We investigate nine individual cases of plant–NP interactions and show the role of plants in the uptake and translocation of nanoparticles or their dissolution into metals. AbstractUnintended releases of nanoparticles (NPs) into agricultural soil have recently raised concerns regarding NP accumulation in plants. In this study, specially synthesised isotopically labelled 107Ag-NPs, 65Cu-NPs and 70ZnO-NPs were exposed to three representative plants (Arabidopsis thaliana, Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and Phragmites australis (common reed)) in hydroponic cultivation and, separately, to tomato plants cultivated in soil at concentrations of 2mgL−1. Metal concentrations in all samples were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry following acid digestion. The use of isotopically labelled NPs confirmed that elevated levels of metals were from the NP source used for the experiments. Although the highest concentrations of NPs or metals were detected in roots in both hydroponic and soil cultivations, varied levels of translocation to shoots were observed in different plants under hydroponic cultivation. In soil cultivation, where tomato plants were grown to full maturity, low levels of 107Ag (0.38mgkg−1) with respect to controls were recorded in tomato fruits; 70Zn showed the highest level of translocation to tomato stems (2.72mgkg−1) and leaves (13.93mgkg−1). Furthermore, the amounts of NPs retained in the soil (at different depths) after harvesting tomato plants were also determined; the highest concentrations of respective isotopes (1.25mgkg−1 of 107Ag, 0.79mgkg−1 of 65Cu, 4.06mgkg−1 of 70Zn) were found in the top soil layer (~3cm). Analysis of NPs exposed to plants in hydroponic medium indicated that the presence of plants increases the dissolution of NPs. Scanning electron microscopy analysis enabled determination of the location of 107Ag-NPs in the roots of tomato plants grown in soil; these NPs were found to accumulate mainly in the cortical cells.

Virus diseases of berry plants became more common and harmful in the 1960s, when berry cultivation expanded in Finland. Virus diseases seldom occur in strawberry because the main vector, Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, does not thrive in Finland. However NEPO-viruses are found in Finland in plant nurseries and in berry cultivations, and they may become a danger for strawberry as well as for raspberry growing. Both wild and cultivated raspberries are commonly infected by viruses. The vector aphids also occur in Finland. Reversion disease infects black currants. The veinbanding virus disease is common in red currants and gooseberries. Virus diseases of berries are poorely investigated in Finland. The healthy plant propagation and certification scheme was established in the 1970s. More research is needed in order to understand our virus problems, to develop proper test methods, and to prevent virus spread.

The knowledge of the quantity and composition of the deposited biomass is useful to plan the nutrient management of cultivations in agroforestry systems. The objective of this work was to evaluate the production of biomass and litter in two agroforestry systems with organic and conventional cultivations of sour orange. The areas use models of orange production by monoculture and under agroforestry systems: the first agroforestry system is composed of rows of brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla K.) accompanied by double rows of orange trees (Citrus aurantium L.); the second system is composed of rows of ingá (Ingá edulis Mart.) accompanied by double rows of orange trees. A completely randomized design was used in a 10x2 factorial scheme, with 4 replications. The locations within the management systems were organized as follows: agroforestry system composed of mahogany trees; Ingá trees agroforestry system; conventional sour orange monoculture system. The areas that the biomass and litter were collected in the locations in the systems were: between plants in the row for cultivation of forest species that make up the system; between rows of the forest species row and orange cultivation row; between plants in the orange cultivation row; between rows of the double row of orange cultivation. Two periods were analyzed in the experiment: the months of lowest and highest rainfall. Agroforestry systems promoted greater biomass and litter to the soil compared to monoculture. In this way, they were configured as a beneficial practice for the soil in sour orange crops in the Brazilian Amazon.

Individual plants of the perennial herb Senecio integrifolius showed a highly significant correlation between rank order of the dates of first flowering and of first fruiting in a natural population and in cultivation. Plants exposed to full sunshine were smaller and flowered earlier than shaded plants both in a natural population and in cultivation. Within the two groups, plants with large inflorescences started to flower first. Duration of flowering was regulated by the size of the inflorescence; plants with many heads flowered longer than plants with few heads. There was a significant correlation between phenological rank order of mother plants in natural populations and their progenies in cultivation, but no consistent relationship between mother size and progeny size was found. Cultivated plants were consistent in rank order of flowering and in size over the years. Key words: flowering phenology, plant size, genetic variation, Senecio.

Nutrient solution concentration (NSC) is a critical factor affecting plant growth in hydroponics. Here, we investigated the effects of hydroponic NSC on the growth and yield of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) plants. First, sweetpotato cuttings were cultivated hydroponically in three different NSCs with low, medium, or high electrical conductivity (EC; 0.8, 1.4, and 2.6 dS m−1, respectively). Shoot growth and storage root yield increased at 143 days after plantation (DAP), depending on the NSC. Next, we examined the effect of NSC changes at half of the cultivation period on the growth and yield, using high and low NSC conditions. In plants transferred from high to low EC (HL plants), the number of attached leaves increased toward the end of the first half of the cultivation period (73 DAP), compared with plants transferred from low to high EC (LH plants). Additionally, the number of attached leaves decreased in HL plants from 73 DAP to the end of the cultivation period (155 DAP), whereas this value increased in LH plants. These changes occurred due to a high leaf abscission ratio in HL plants. The storage root yield showed no significant difference between HL and LH plants. Our results suggest that the regulation of hydroponic NSC during the cultivation period affects the growth characteristics of sweetpotato.

Background: Traditional medicine plays a major role in the primary health care of many people living in rural areas. South Africa is a home to over 30,000 species of higher plants and 3,000 of these species have been found to be used in traditional medicine across the country. South African medicinal plants are decreasing at an alarming rate as a result of over exploitation. Today many medicinal plants face extinction but detailed information is lacking. The purpose of this paper was to review current and proposed cultivation strategies that could be used to improve plant conservation statuses, livelihoods of the people involved in medicinal plant industry and sustainability of this industry. Methods: In this review, emphasis was on the members of Hyacinthaceae family and the species Siphonochilus aethiopicus (Schweinf) B.L. Burtt (Zingiberaceae), which are some of the most traded and used in traditional herbal medicine. Detailed literature search was conducted on the current strategies that are being used for the cultivation of medicinal and food crops and a conceptual analysis of how technologies used for the cultivation of non-medicinal crops could be adopted for cultivation of medicinal plants in Africa. Siphonochilus aethiopicus was used as a case study to demonstrate the potential of using alternative cultivation strategy such as hydroponics in the cultivation of medicinal plants. Results: The results showed that hydroponics has the potential to improve plant growth. In conclusion, evidences suggest that there is potential for growth in the medicinal plant industry if optimum cultivation technologies such as hydroponics are implemented despite the perception that Africans have an ingrained traditional preference of wild harvested plants, on the contrary many Africans have no issues with cultivated medicinal plants.
