AbstractWe consider some cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada–Kawasaki–Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. We establish the global existence of strong solutions to systems for multiple species having equal either diffusion or reaction rates. The systems are given on bounded domains of arbitrary dimension.

We present a theoretical analysis of the processes of pattern formation that involves organisms distribution and their interaction of spatially distributed population with self- as well as cross-diffusion in a Holling-Tanner predator-prey model; the sufficient conditions for the Turing instability with zero-flux boundary conditions are obtained; Hopf and Turing bifurcation in a spatial domain is presented, too. Furthermore, we present novel numerical evidence of time evolution of patterns controlled by self- as well as cross-diffusion in the model, and find that the model dynamics exhibits a cross-diffusion controlled formation growth not only to spots, but also to strips, holes, and stripes-spots replication. And the methods and results in the present paper may be useful for the research of the pattern formation in the cross-diffusive model.

Reaction-diffusion systems with cross-diffusion are analyzed here for modeling the population dynamics of epidemic systems. In this paper specific attention is devoted to the numerical analysis and simulation of such systems to show that, far from possible pathologies, the qualitative behaviour of the systems may well interpret the dynamics of real systems.

Real diffusion networks are complex and dynamic, since underlying social structures are not only far-reaching beyond a single homogeneous system but also frequently changing with the context of diffusion. Thus, studying topic-related diffusion across multiple social systems is important for a better understanding of such realistic situations. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on uncovering topic-related diffusion dynamics across heterogeneous social networks in both model-driven and model-free ways. We first conduct empirical studies for analyzing diffusion phenomena in real world systems, such as new diffusion in social media and knowledge transfer in academic publications. We observe that large diffusion is more likely attributed to interactions between heterogeneous social networks as if they were in the same networks. Thus, external influences from out-of-the-network sources, as observed in previous work, need to be explained with the context of interactions between heterogeneous social networks. This observation motivates our new conceptual framework for cross-population diffusion, which extends the traditional diffusion mechanism to a more flexible and general one. Second, we propose both model-driven and model-free approaches to estimate global trends of information diffusion. Based on our conceptual framework, we propose a model-driven approach which allows internal influence to reach heterogeneous populations in a probabilistic way. This approach extends a simple and robust mass action diffusion model by incorporating the structural connectivity and heterogeneity of real-world networks. We then propose a model-free approach using informationtheoretic measures with the consideration of both time-delay and memory effects on diffusion. In contrast to the model-driven approach, this model-free approach does not require any assumptions on dynamic social interactions in the real world, providing the benefits of quantifying nonlinear dynamics of complex systems. Finally, we compare our model-driven and model-free approaches in accordance with different context of diffusion. This helps us to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of topic-related diffusion patterns. Both approaches provide a coherent macroscopic view of global diffusion in terms of the strength and directionality of influences among heterogeneous social networks. We find that the two approaches provide similar results but with different perspectives, which in conjunction can help better explain diffusion than either approach alone. They also suggest alternative options as either or both of the approaches can be used appropriate to the real situations of different application domains. We expect that our proposed approaches provide ways to quantify and understand cross-population diffusion trends at a macro level. Also, they can be applied to a wide range of research areas such as social science, marketing, and even neuroscience, for estimating dynamic influences among target regions or systems.

Africa was falling apart. But now it is coming together, and Africa and Africans are achieving greatness. The twenty-first century is significant for every African. In Things Come Together, Robert Rotberg extols the successes and explains the struggles. Rotberg is one of the world’s foremost authorities on African politics and society, and in this book he synthesizes his knowledge of the continent into a concise overview of the current state of Africa and where it is headed. To that end, Rotberg considers Africa’s myriad peoples as contributors in their separate nations to the continent’s ultimate destiny. The continent is experiencing explosive population growth and rapidly urbanizing. How are African states managing this epochal shift? He looks at how Africa’s nations are governed, ranging from states with autocratic kleptocrats to democratized regimes that have made progress in achieving economic growth and battling corruption. He then turns to African economies, looking at growth levels, productivity, and persistent corruption. He concludes by covering the effects of war, health care, wildlife management, varieties of religious belief, education, technology diffusion, and the character of both city and village life in this ever-evolving region. Throughout this sweeping work, Rotberg deftly moves readers across the continent, from Nigeria to South Africa, from Kenya to Uganda, to name but a few. While there are cross-continent commonalities related to governance, demographics, and economic performance, he shows the unique national variations of who and what is African.

AbstractThis study contributes to the emerging literature on the diffusion of SPC across social strata, by comparing two national contexts, Sweden and Spain, with different prevalence rates of SPC and with diverging social and gender policies in the early XXI century. We draw on the 2006 and 2014 comparative cross-sectional data from the Spanish and Swedish Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC), to test two competitive hypotheses (diffusion and diverging destinies hypotheses) on the association of parental socioeconomic status, children’s living arrangements in separated families and their relative prevalence in a populaiton. We also examine whether such association is modified by the great increase in SPC in both countries between 2006 and 2014. We present empirical evidence that, independently from the context, SPC arrangements are more frequent among parents with higher socioeconomic status and sole-custody arrangements among other parents; however, social inequality in post-separation arrangements differ in the two countries over time. In Spain, we find evidence in favour of the diffusion hypothesis with increases in the prevalence of SPC going hand in hand with the diffusion of SPC across social strata. By contrast, the Swedish data support the diverging destinies hypothesis with increases in SPC producing no variation in its social stratification over time.

The diffusion of mobile services is one of important technological phenomena of the twenty-first century (Dholakia & Dholakia, 2003). According to the International Telecommunication Union,1 the number of mobile service users had exceeded 1.5 billion individual subscribers by early 2005. This represents around one-quarter of the world’s population. The introduction of .mobi, a new toplevel domain,2 is expected to further facilitate the usage of mobile services. Because of their high penetration rates, mobile services have received cross-disciplinary academic attention (e.g., Ruhi & Turel, 2005; Serenko & Bontis, 2004; Turel, Serenko & Bontis, 2007; Turel, 2006; Turel & Serenko, 2006; Turel & Yuan, 2006; Turel et al., 2006). While the body of knowledge on mobile services in general is growing (Krogstie, Lyytinen, Opdahl, Pernici, Siau, & Smolander, 2004), there seems to be a gap in our understanding of a basic, yet important service that mobile service providers offer, namely mobile portals (m-portals). M-portals are wireless Web pages that help wireless users in their interactions with mobile content and services (based on the definition by Clarke & Flaherty, 2003). These are a worthy topic for investigation since, in many cases, they represent the main gate to the mobile Internet and to wireless value-added services (Serenko & Bontis, 2004). Particularly, users of premium wireless services typically employ m-portals to discover and navigate to wireless content such as news briefs, stock quotes, mobile games, and so forth. Given this, m-portals have a strong value proposition (i.e., a unique value-added that an entity offers stakeholders through its operations) for both users and service providers. These value dimensions, which drive the implementation and the use of m-portals, are explored in the subsequent sections. Despite that a number of publications solely devoted to the topic of m-portals already exist, there are very few works that not only present the concept of mobile portals, but also portray their characteristics and discuss some of the issues associated with their deployment by service providers and employment by individual users. The value proposition of mobile portals was rarely explored in depth, and some motivational factors for developing and using mobile portals still remain unclear. To fill this gap, this article explores value proposition of mobile portals from both a wireless service provider and an individual user perspective. Based on this discussion, two conceptual frameworks are suggested. The rest of this article is structured as follows. First, the key value drivers of m-portals from a wireless service provider’s viewpoint are portrayed. Second, a framework that depicts the unique attributes of mobile portals and their impact on the value users derive from these services is offered. This framework is then utilized for discussing some of the challenges mobile portal developers and service providers currently face. These obstacles need to be overcome in order for service providers and users to realize the true value of mobile portals.
