Haptic roughness is basic to accurately identifying the texture of an object. When we manipulate everyday objects, their surfaces emit sound. Cross-modal effects between haptic and auditory roughness must thus be considered in realizing a multimodal human-computer interface. We conducted two experiments to accumulate basic data for the cross-modality using a force feedback device. In one experiment, we studied the cross-modal effect of auditory roughness on haptic roughness. We studied the effect of haptic roughness on auditory roughness in the other experiment. Results showed that cross-modal effects were mutually enhancing when their single-modal roughness was relatively high.

AbstractThroughout the course of product experience, a user employs multiple senses, including vision, hearing, and touch. Previous cross-modal studies have shown that multiple senses interact with each other and change perceptions. In this paper, we propose a methodology for designing multisensory product experiences by applying cross-modal effect to simultaneous stimuli. In this methodology, we first obtain a model of the comprehensive cognitive structure of user's multisensory experience by applying Kansei modeling methodology and extract opportunities of cross-modal effect from the structure. Second, we conduct experiments on these cross-modal effects and formulate them by obtaining a regression curve through analysis. Finally, we find solutions to improve the product sensory experience from the regression model of the target cross-modal effects. We demonstrated the validity of the methodology with SLR cameras as a case study, which is a typical product with multisensory perceptions.

Although studies have investigated the influence of the emotionality of primes on the cross-modal affective priming effect, it is unclear whether this effect is due to the contribution of the arousal or the valence of primes. We explored how the valence and arousal of primes influenced the cross-modal affective priming effect. In Experiment 1 we manipulated the valence of primes (positive and negative) that were matched by arousal. In Experiments 2 and 3 we manipulated the arousal of primes under the conditions of positive and negative valence, respectively. Affective words were used as auditory primes and affective faces were used as visual targets in a priming task. The results suggest that the valence of primes modulated the cross-modal affective priming effect but that the arousal of primes did not influence the priming effect. Only when the priming stimuli were positive did the cross-modal affective priming effect occur, but negative primes did not produce a priming effect. In addition, for positive but not negative primes, the arousal of primes facilitated the processing of subsequent targets. Our findings have great significance for understanding the interaction of different modal affective information.

Numerous studies have demonstrated effects of spatial attention within single sensory modalities (within-modal spatial attention) and the effect of directing attention to one sense compared with the other senses (intermodal attention) on cortical neuronal activity. Furthermore, recent studies have been revealing that the effects of spatial attention directed to a certain location in a certain sense spread to the other senses at the same location in space (cross-modal spatial attention). The present study used magnetoencephalography to examine the temporal dynamics of the effects of within-modal and cross-modal spatial and intermodal attention on cortical processes responsive to visual stimuli. Visual or tactile stimuli were randomly presented on the left or right side at a random interstimulus interval and subjects directed attention to the left or right when vision or touch was a task-relevant modality. Sensor-space analysis showed that a response around the occipitotemporal region at around 150 ms after visual stimulation was significantly enhanced by within-modal, cross-modal spatial, and intermodal attention. A later response over the right frontal region at around 200 ms was enhanced by within-modal spatial and intermodal attention, but not by cross-modal spatial attention. These effects were estimated to originate from the occipitotemporal and lateral frontal areas, respectively. Thus the results suggest different spatiotemporal dynamics of neural representations of cross-modal attention and intermodal or within-modal attention.

Using a spatial-cueing paradigm in which trait words were set as visual cues and gender words were set as auditory targets, we examined whether cross-modal spatial attention was influenced by gender stereotypes. Results of an experiment conducted with 24 participants indicate that they tended to focus on targets in the valid-cue condition (i.e., the cues located at the same position as targets), regardless of the modality of cues and targets, which is consistent with the cross-modal attention effect found in previous studies. Participants tended to focus on targets that were stereotype-consistent with cues only when the cues were valid, which shows that stereotype-consistent information facilitated visual–auditory cross-modal spatial attention. These results suggest that cognitive schema, such as gender stereotypes, have an effect on cross-modal spatial attention.

Our brain continuously generates saccadic eye movements and maintains their accuracy thanks to saccadic adaptation (SA). Despite this plasticity-based mechanism has been widely studied since the late 20th century, many questions remain unanswered. For instance, in addition to visual targets, saccades can also be performed toward somatosensory and auditory stimuli, but whether these ‘non-visual saccades’ can be subject to similar adaptive mechanisms as visual saccades is unknown. In the first part of this thesis, we investigated the possibility of adapting the amplitude of reactive saccades (RS) to tactile (Study 1) and auditory targets (Study 2) via the double target step paradigm, which has largely been used to induce adaptation of visual saccades since its introduction (McLaughlin 1967). We also investigated the bidirectional cross-modal transfer of adaptation between visual and tactile saccades, as well as between visual and auditory saccades, respectively. Our results revealed that tactile and auditory saccades can be adapted in much the same way as visual saccades. However, the transfer patterns were asymmetric: visual SA transferred fully to non-adapted tactile and auditory saccades, whereas tactile and auditory SA, despite complete generalization to saccades of the same modality but toward non-adapted locations, transferred only partially to the non-adapted visual saccades. On the one hand, the full transfer of visual saccades adaptation further supports the current view of a motor adaptation locus for visual RS. On the other hand, the low adaptation transfers to visual saccades suggest the presence of adaptation loci specific to non-visual RS and situated upstream of the final motor pathway common to all saccades. Interestingly, both studies also demonstrate that SA can be elicited in darkness, thus, without the vision of the post-saccadic target location. This seems to contradict current theories on the nature of error signals driving adaptation, which all rely on post-saccadic visual feedback. One potential factor that might serve as an error signal for SA is the locus of spatial attention, as suggested by some previous studies. Spatial attention oriented covertly (no eye movement) and saccadic orienting responses both critically contribute to visual perception and involve overlapping neural substrates. In addition, recent studies show that SA modulates the orienting of spatial attention while the reverse effect, that is, the effect of spatial attention on SA, remains unsettled. In the second part of this thesis (Study 3), we aim to assess in depth the possibility of a modulatory effect of spatial attention on SA. We used a combination of the double-step target paradigm (to induce adaptation) and the cross-modal attentional-orienting paradigm to investigate the effect of tactile exogenous and endogenous spatial attention on the adaptation of reactive and voluntary saccades, respectively. Our results show significant correlations between the amount and speed of saccadic adaptive changes and the amount of attention allocated toward or away from the adapted saccade target. Thus, Study 3 brings additional arguments in favor of a coupling between spatial attention and SA, possibly by means of an effect of spatial attention on the saccadic error signals at the level of the posterior parietal cortex. Overall, this work brings additional empirical insights on the control of accuracy of non-visual RS and further highlights the role of spatial attention in SA. Even though significant advances have been seen in models investigating the nature of the error signals driving SA, they currently do not consider the coupling between spatial attention and SA. Therefore, based on the available literature and the outcomes of this thesis, we suggest that future work should take into account the role of spatial attention in error processing

Perception in our everyday life takes place in multisensory environments, and hence involves the processing of a multitude of signals captured by various sensory modalities. Given the different nature of the signals, understanding how all the information is combined in the brain to form an integrated percept is not straightforward. One of the paramount questions is how the considerable timing differences between sensory information processing are managed. For example, in the last years there has been a tremendous surge in interest to understand how the perceptual system elicits the subjective impression of synchrony for stimuli coming from different sensory modalities. Yet, most evidence so far concerns stimulus-related properties in simple contexts. The present dissertation addresses the influence of cognitive factors and participants’ inner state (such as attention, action task demands, and ongoing brain rhythms) on synchrony perception between audio-visual events. In the first two studies of the dissertation, we have addressed the role of selective attention and action during cross-modal temporal recalibration. The results of these studies provide evidence that subjective simultaneity can be strongly modulated as a function of the focus of the observer’s endogenous attention, in otherwise identical stimulation conditions. In the third study, we have recorded electroencephalographic activity while participants performed an audio-visual simultaneity judgment task for stimuli presented at different asynchronies. Our results show that the phase of low frequency neural oscillations, reflecting brain states prior to the occurrence of an audio-visual event, can predict perceptual variability in synchrony judgments. Overall, our results shed new light on how cognitive factors can modulate multisensory perception.

Despite considerable research, the effects of common types of noise on verbal and spatial information processing are still relatively unknown. Three experiments, using convenience sampling were conducted to investigate the effect of auditory interference on the cognitive performance of 24 adult men and women during the Stroop test, perception of object recognition and spatial location tasks, and the perception of object size, shape, and spatial location tasks. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis of variance and 1-way multivariate analysis of variance. The Experiment 1 findings indicated reaction time performance for gender and age group was affected by auditory interference between experimental conditions, and recognition accuracy was affected only by experimental condition. The Experiment 2a results showed reaction time performance for recognizing object features was affected by auditory interference between age groups, and recognition accuracy by experimental condition. The Experiment 2b results demonstrated reaction time performance for detecting the spatial location of objects was affected by auditory interference between age groups. In addition, reaction time was affected by the type of interference and spatial location. Further, recognition accuracy was affected by interference condition and spatial location. The Experiment 3 findings suggested reaction time performance for assessing part-whole relationships was affected by auditory interference between age groups. Further, recognition accuracy was affected by interference condition between experimental groups. This study may create social change by affecting the design of learning and workplace environments, the neurological correlates of auditory and visual stimuli, and the pathologies of adults such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This research examines how cross-modal and within-modal matching differ. Three broad classes of difference are considered, that crossmodal matching requires (a) "translation" between modality-specific stores or (b) "transformation" of information when different information is available through each modality or (c) transformation, whatever the information available through each modality, owing to differences in encoding strategy. Visual-kinaesthetic matching of the end-point of lever movements has been investigated. It is argued that adult cross-modal performance depends on information and strategy, not directly on modality. Results with children have been less clear, experiments were therefore undertaken, with subjects aged 6-9 years. The hypothesis was that childrens' performance also would be determined by available information, and strategy. With information differences eliminated, modality conditions did not differ in within-subject variability, with up to 20 second unfilled retention intervals. With visual information enhanced by background cues and emphasis of the body midline, visual matching was superior to kinaesthetic, and within-modal was superior to cross-modal matching. These differences disappeared with practice, together with coding relative to the midline in the cross-modal conditions. Midline-relative coding was the norm with the midline emphasised, and without background cues. With or without variability differences, VV did not differ from KK in bias, but KV resulted in greater overshooting, VK greater undershooting. The most likely explanation is resistance to movement when perception is kinaesthetic, causing overestimation of distance moved. Consideration of the information normally available to subjects, generated the hypothesis that temporal and spatial parameters should interact more with kinaesthetic than with visual perception. This was supported, since movement velocity biased only kinaesthetic judgements. It is concluded that matching performance depends on the information encoded and used as the basis of matching, which depends on strategy; strategy depends on information (a) available during stimulus presentation, (b) normally available in each modality, (c) which it is anticipated will be available during response.

Using a wearable tactile display three experiments were conducted in which tactile messages were created emulating five standard US Army and Marine arm and hand signals for the military commands, namely: "Attention", "Halt", "Rally", "Move Out", and "Nuclear Biological or Chemical event (NBC)". Response times and accuracy rates were collected for novices responding to visual and tactile representations of these messages, which were displayed either alone or together in congruent or incongruent combinations. Results indicated synergistic effects for concurrent, congruent message presentations showing superior response times when compared to individual presentations in either modality alone. This effect was mediated by participant strategy. Accuracy similarly improved when both the tactile and visual presentation were concurrently displayed as opposed to separately. In a low workload condition, participants could largely attend to a particular modality, with little interference from competing signals. If participants were not given instructions as to which modality to attend to, participants chose that modality which was received first. Lastly, initial learning and subsequent training of intuitive tactile signals occurred rapidly with large gains in performance in short training periods. These results confirm the promise for tactile messages to augment visual messaging in challenging and stressful environments particularly when visual messaging is maybe preferred but is not always feasible or possible.

Motion perception is critical to navigation within the environment and has been studied primarily in the unisensory visual domain. However, the real world is not unisensory, but contains motion information from several modalities. With the billions of sensory stimuli our brains receive every second, many complex processes must be executed in order to properly filter relevant motion related information. In transparent motion, when there are more than one velocity fields within the same visual space, our brains must be able to separate out conflicting forms of motion utilizing environmental cues. But even in unimodal visual situations, one often uses information from other modalities for guidance. We studied this phenomenon in psychophysics with cross-modal (visual and auditory) cues and their role in detecting transparent motion. To further examine these ideas, using a single subject we explored the spatiotemporal characteristics of the neural substrates involved in utilizing these different cues in motion detection during magnetoencephalography (MEG). Another dimension of motion perception is involved when the observer is moving and, therefore, must deal with self-motion and changing environmental cues. To better understand this idea we used a visual search psychophysical task that has been well studied in our lab to determine whether subjects use a simple relative-motion computation to detect moving objects during self-motion or whether they utilize scene context when detecting object motion and how this might change when given a cross-modal auditory cue. To find the spatiotemporal neural characteristics involved in this process, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and MEG were performed separately in elderly subjects (healthy and a stroke patient) and compared with previous studies of young healthy subjects doing the same task.

Visual deprivation in early life causes widespread changes to the visual pathway. Structures normally dedicated to vision can be recruited for processing of the remaining senses (i.e. audition). This thesis used magnetic resonance imaging to explore how the 'visual' pathway reorganises in congenital bilateral anophthalmia, a condition where individuals are born without eyes. Anophthalmia provides a unique model of complete deprivation, since the ‘visual’ pathway has not experienced pre- or post-natal visual input. Firstly, this thesis explored reorganisation of the anophthalmic 'visual' pathway for auditory processing, from subcortical structures responding to basic sounds (Chapters 3 and 4), to higher-order occipital areas extracting meaning from speech sounds (Chapter 7). Secondly, this thesis looked to better understand the neurochemical, neuroanatomical and behavioural changes that accompany reorganisation in anophthalmia (Chapters 5 and 6). Finally, this thesis investigated whether similar changes can take place in the sighted brain after a short period of visual deprivation (Chapter 8). The experiments in this thesis provide some evidence that the lack of pre-natal visual experiences affects cross-modal reorganisation. Chapter 4 describes a unique subcortico-cortical route for auditory input in anophthalmia. Furthermore, Chapter 7 suggests that hierarchical processing of sensory information in the occipital cortex is maintained in anophthalmia, which may not be the case in congenital or early-onset blindness. However, this thesis also suggests that some reorganisation thought to be limited to anophthalmia can be found in early-onset blindness, for example with the subcortical functional changes described in Chapter 3. In addition, neurochemical, neuroanatomical and behavioural changes described in Chapters 5 and 6 are comparable to those reported in early-onset blindness, therefore demonstrating important similarities between these populations. Finally, this thesis describes how some of these functional and behavioural changes can also take place in sighted subjects after a short period of blindfolding, although this effect is extremely variable across subjects (Chapter 8). The thesis concludes by highlighting the considerable contribution of individual differences in studies of cross-modal reorganisation, and emphasises the need for larger more homogenous groups when investigating subcortical and cortical plasticity in the absence of visual input.

We present in this thesis, the non-parametric approach using mixed associated kernels for densities withsupports being partially continuous and discrete. We first start by recalling the essential concepts of classical continuousand discrete kernel density estimators. We give the definition and characteristics of these estimators. We also recall thevarious technical for the choice of smoothing parameters and we revisit the problems of supports as well as a resolutionof the edge effects in the discrete case. Then, we describe a new method of continuous associated kernels for estimatingdensity with bounded support, which includes the classical continuous kernel method. We define the continuousassociated kernels and we propose the mode-dispersion for their construction. Moreover, we illustrate this on the nonclassicalassociated kernels of literature namely, beta and its extended version, gamma and its inverse, inverse Gaussianand its reciprocal, the Pareto kernel and the kernel lognormal. We subsequently examine the properties of the estimatorswhich are derived, specifically, the bias, variance and the pointwise and integrated mean squared errors. Then, wepropose an algorithm for reducing bias that we illustrate on these non-classical associated kernels. Some simulationsstudies are performed on three types of estimators lognormal kernels. Also, we study the asymptotic behavior of thecontinuous associated kernel estimators for density. We first show the pointwise weak and strong consistencies as wellas the asymptotic normality. Then, we present the results of the global weak and strong consistencies using uniform andL1norms. We illustrate this on three types of lognormal kernels estimators. Subsequently, we study the minimaxproperties of the continuous associated kernel estimators. We first describe the model and we give the technicalassumptions with which we work. Then we present our results that we apply on some non-classical associated kernelsmore precisely beta, gamma and lognormal kernel estimators. Finally, we combine continuous and discrete associatedkernels for defining the mixed associated kernels. Using the tools of the unification of discrete and continuous analysis,we show the different properties of the mixed associated kernel estimators. All through this work, we choose thesmoothing parameter using the least squares cross-validation method

This volume explores the extremely rich diversity found under the “modal umbrella” in natural language. Offering a cross-linguistic perspective on the encoding of modal meanings that draws on novel data from an extensive set of languages, the book supports a view according to which modality infuses a much more extensive number of syntactic categories and levels of syntactic structure than has traditionally been thought. The volume distinguishes between “low modality,” which concerns modal interpretations that associate with the verbal and nominal cartographies in syntax, “middle modality” or modal interpretation associated to the syntactic cartography internal to the clause, and “high modality” that relates to the cartography known as the left periphery. By offering enticing combinations of cross-linguistic discussions of the more studied sources of modality together with novel or unexpected sources of modality, the volume presents specific case studies that show how meanings associated with low, middle, and high modality crystallize across a large variety of languages. The chapters on low modality explore modal meanings in structures that lack the complexity of full clauses, including conditional readings in noun phrases and modal features in lexical verbs. The chapters on middle modality examine the effects of tense and aspect on constructions with counterfactual readings, and on those that contain canonical modal verbs. The chapters on high modality are dedicated to constructions with imperative, evidential, and epistemic readings, examining, and at times challenging, traditional perspectives that syntactically associate these interpretations with the left periphery of the clause.

AbstractFalsified media threatens key areas of our society, ranging from politics to journalism to economics. Simple and inexpensive tools available today enable easy, credible manipulations of multimedia assets. Some even utilize advanced artificial intelligence concepts to manipulate media, resulting in videos known as deepfakes. Social media platforms and their “echo chamber” effect propagate fabricated digital content at scale, sometimes with dire consequences in real-world situations. However, ensuring semantic consistency across falsified media assets of different modalities is still very challenging for current deepfake tools. Therefore, cross-modal analysis (e.g., video-based and audio-based analysis) provides forensic analysts an opportunity to identify inconsistencies with higher accuracy. In this chapter, we introduce several approaches to detect deepfakes. These approaches leverage different data modalities, including video and audio. We show that the presented methods achieve accurate detection for various large-scale datasets.

The present work reports on a set of perceptual psychological experiments aimed to portray the underlying meta-structure of affective communication, exploiting a crossmodal database of verbal and non-verbal (gaze, facial expressions, and gestures) American English video clips, for a comparative analysis of the subjective perception of emotional states dynamically presented through the visual and auditory channels, considered either singularly or in combination. The participants to the experiments are 90 Italian and 90 American English subjects. The results reveal that the amount of emotional information conveyed by the audio and visual components separately is much the same as that conveyed through the combined channels, suggesting a nonlinear processing of the emotional information and a cognitive load effect when it arrives from both the channels. In addition, and differently from previous results observed in experiments involving Italian stimuli, both the Italian and the American subjects seem to exploit more the visual than the auditory information, debating the previously suggested “language expertise hypothesis” (see [12, 13]) that favours the identification of emotional expressions in the audio when subjects are asked to label emotional stimuli in their own language because of their expertise in language-specific prosodic and paralinguistic information. It is possible that at the base of the encoding of the emotional information there is a more language specific process that is strictly related to the language and the way suprasegmental information are encoded and expressed in it.

Stereoscopic particle image velocimtery (PIV) was used to characterize a hovering rotor wake at four collective pitch settings in the world's largest wind tunnel test section. The PIV measurements are a subset of a comprehensive dataset acquired during the hover test of the HVAB rotor. Substantial effort was made to cross-validate PIV results with other test measurements and fluid mechanic theories to ensure accuracy in the reported HVAB dataset. Blade coning and flap bending were validated against early tip vortex locations. Tip vortex trajectory was compared against shadowgraphy results and free-jet boundaries. Tip vortex circulation was evaluated using a line-integral approach and least-squares curve-fit to a vortex model. Downwash velocity was compared against momentum theory values. Best practices were followed to correct inherent tip vortex aperiodicity. PIV-specific challenges were exacerbated by testing in a large facility, such as identifying and removing noisy vector fields caused by inadequate seeding. Towards this end, two new filtering methodologies were developed: (1) Modal Outlier Method (MOM), and (2) Projection on Phaseaverage (POP). Significant reduction in standard deviation was observed when outlier vector fields were removed. Lastly, inverse Betz theory was applied on PIV flow fields to relate trailed wake circulation and the sectional bound circulation. The resulting PIV-based loading distribution was used with lifting-line calculations and Helios simulations to analyze wake evolution. Blade-vortex interaction played a significant role in the airloads distribution that, in turn, affected the strength and evolution of the tip vortices themselves. The similarities and differences found among the PIV-, Helios-, and surface pressure sensor-based airloads were analyzed in detail to help plan future experiments.

In recent years, cross-modal effects in which perceptions interact with each other have been drawing attention. In the case of the cross-modal effect between vision and taste, the effect of the angularity of shapes on taste has been widely studied while there has been little research on the other features of shapes. Previous studies have shown that the emotional valence arisen from visual perception causes the cross-modal effect between vision and taste. Therefore, this study focuses on the complexity of shapes, which is said to influence emotional valence, as a visual stimulus and aims to confirm the cross-modal effect induced by its sensation. First, based on previous research, the hypotheses about the effects of the complexity of shapes on taste were made. Second, by using particle swarm optimization algorithm, closed curve shapes were generated based on curvature entropy, a quantitative index of the complexity of shapes, which indicates the randomness of curvature transition. Third, cup holders, which had these closed curve shapes on their sides, were created by using a 3D printer. Finally, by comparing the tastes of orange juice in these cup holders, the effect of the complexity of shapes on the perception of sweetness, sourness and intensity was confirmed. The results suggest that the complexity of shapes controlled by curvature entropy weakens the perception of sweetness whereas it enhances that of sourness and intensity. This finding can be used for reducing sugar intake in bottle packaging.

In the realm of transitioning eVTOL aircraft, hindrance may be placed on performance in each of the two flight modes due to the existence of apparatuses or devices intended wholly for the other mode. For example, the presence of wings will normally reduce hover endurance due to their weight, and the use of a plurality of exposed lift-propellers - for hover stability and control - can lower flight speed and range in airplane mode because of the excess drag. It would seem, then, that transitioning eVTOL aircraft are generally poor performers in any mode when compared to their dedicated, single-mode cousins. This paper explores another possibility, of substantial performance improvement when the devices or their use become elements augmenting performance in the other mode - or cross-modally. Through an example dual-propeller aircraft, several cross-modal elements - including phenomena like the fan-in-wing effect and the inverse of Custer's channel-wing effect - are identified and their merits expounded.

This work examines how the natural frequencies and modal damping ratios of a shaft/rotor system are affected by changes in lubricant viscosity and bearing clearance. The analysis considers a uniform elastic shaft with a single rigid rotor mounted away from mid-span, and supported by fully cavitated, π-film, short-length, plain journal bearings. The transverse displacements and cross-sectional rotations are described by Ritz series, and standard fluid film lubrication theory is used to describe the forces generated by the bearings. The clearance and lubricant viscosity are independently adjustable at each bearing. A Campbell diagram, which depicts the imaginary part of the systems eigenvalues as a function of rotation rate, is used to identify critical speeds for the nominal system. With the rotation rate held fixed at a critical value, lubricant viscosity and bearing clearance are allowed to vary, and the fluctuations of natural frequency and modal damping ratio are evaluated.
