Анотація:

Cross-industry innovation is becoming more relevant for firms, as this approach often results in radical innovations. However, firms can only benefit from cross-industry innovation if they are open to external knowledge sources and understand how to explore, transform, and exploit cross-industry knowledge. Firms must establish certain structures and processes to facilitate and operationalise organisational learning across industry boundaries. Since Henkel, an international leader in industrial and consumer business, has systematically applied cross-industry innovation and created numerous radical innovations through this approach, I used this firm as a best practice case for analysis. I applied a mixed methods approach to learn more about Henkel's organisational learning process and its subsequent benefits. Based on quantitative data, I conducted a partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) analysis, including an importance–performance matrix analysis (IPMA), and combined these results with qualitative interview data and corporate reports. My results show how Henkel has successfully systemised its organisational learning process and reveal how exploratory, transformative, and exploitative learning can enhance a firm's outcome through cross-industry innovation.

AbstractCross-industry meta-cluster initiatives may play a crucial role in speeding up conceptualization and launching of viable innovations. In this context, this paper introduces a methodology for integrated planning of hybrid value chains. Using a roadmap of interrelated planning matrices, appropriate projects, mechanisms and institutional constructions can be formulated and cross-industry meta-cluster initiatives can be built in a structured, systematic and systemic way. Theory is exemplified for planning new generations of innovations at the intersection of ICT and agriculture sectors. The case study shows the potential of the methodology to provide a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative assessment of the current state and to highlight the major challenges for reaching a competitive viability of the emerging innovations within a hybrid innovation eco-system.

We explore the types of knowledge barriers that are encountered at organizational level in cross-industry innovation, what influences them and how they can be overcome. Eleven cross-industry projects were qualitatively analyzed at the individual level of activity. Innovation collaboration occurred at three levels; intra-organizational, inter-organizational, and inter-institutional. Each level exhibited added relational distances as well as semantic and pragmatic barriers, of which the latter type was the most challenging. Effort necessary to overcome knowledge barriers accumulated at each level. Knowledge barriers were increased by legitimacy differences and communicational deficiencies, and lowered by reduction of interdependencies, use of knowledge brokers, and previous cross-industry experience.

Universities play a vital role in innovation ecosystems. Besides, their role is being transformed and reinforced due to the interdisciplinary nature of modern innovations and inter-sectoral collaboration in the process of implementing cross-industry projects. The article’s main objective is to reveal the emerging new goals, functions, and goals of university as knowledge integrator and consolidator within cross-industry ecosystem. The article introduces the approaches to the implementation of the cross-industry ecosystem integrator functions as an “entry point” for the creation of new ideas, competencies, technological solutions, and projects for the development and testing of new technologies. The research results are useful for academics and policy makers in emerging economies to adopt and consider, so as to improve the contribution of the universities to the country’s economic and innovation development.

This paper is a pilot study using qualitative analysis to obtain concepts related to individual perceptions of Chief Executive Officers within various industries internationally. These concepts are related to emerging technologies such as mobile devices and their usefulness within a business and personal context. Technology has played a role in human affairs including business for millennia – starting with the lighting of the first fire, the carving of ideograms on the walls of caves and inventing the first round artifact that would eventually serve as a wheel. This research has empirically documented the ways and means that mobile technologies and “Smart-phones” impact an executive’s productivity and efficiency at work by conducting a series of opened ended interviews. Our findings further corroborate the presence, role and impact of what we call “happy accidents” in terms of strategic knowledge serendipity and arbitrage (SKARSE™) as factors shaping and even driving choices made by business leaders with strategic intent and implications.

Cross-industry innovation (CII) aims to reuse existing solutions by leveraging the innovative power of partners’ knowledge from another industry. CII is a key concept for identifying and adapting potential (disruptive) innovations and technologies and gains importance in recent years. To enable CII in companies, we examine the topic holistically. First, we summarize the existing literature, including frameworks of CII. Second, we conduct expert interviews in order to consider also the practical perspective. We then consolidate the results into a framework with a structured procedure and detailed methods, which can be used by companies. Our contribution has several implications for practice and research. For practice, we derive five recommendations for actions for companies that already use or plan to use CII. For the scientific community, we summarize the state of research on CII and present our framework, which can serve as a starting point for further research.

We analyse the effect of business model innovation (BMI) on the product innovation performance of firms, based on a dynamic capabilities theoretical framework. Our empirical study is based on a large-scale representative sample of cross-industry Swedish firms participating in three waves of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) from 2008 to 2012. We hypothesise that BMI in the form of product innovations combined with different complementary and simultaneous innovations in processes, marketing and organisation will act as isolating mechanisms towards replication by competitors, resulting in superior firm performance. Our findings provide support for such hypothesis. BMI is significantly and positively associated with superior product innovation performance. Managers should frame and align product innovations in BMI context, i.e., dynamically adapting product innovations with process, marketing and organisation innovations.

Organisational-level cognitive distance between the source of knowledge and the applying firm is positively related to radical innovation, but hinders processing of distant knowledge as it is constrained by the firms absorptive capacity. We examine how determinants of absorptive capacity foster processing of distant knowledge from other industries. Using survey data from 125 firms across industrial sectors, structural equation modelling indicates that the relationship between a firms potential absorptive capacity and its cross-industry innovation outcomes and performance is fostered by collaborative learning activities and deliberate integration mechanisms. There is a direct negative effect of potential absorptive capacity on cross-industry innovation outcomes. Our results extend research on absorptive capacity to the context of cross-industry innovation. They reveal that although firms may have high levels of potential absorptive capacity, they may fail to exercise opportunities for cross-industry innovation. We provide means for managers to enhance absorptive capacity when moving beyond industry boundaries.

Cross-industry technology spillover perception (CTSP) refers to the degree to which the enterprise absorbs the technology spilling from outside industries. How does the enterprise’s CTSP impact its cross-industry innovation performance? To answer this question, we distinguished CTSP into CTSP-Width and CTSP-Depth and investigate their dynamical impacts on the cross-industry innovation performance from the perspective of industry development process. Furthermore, we also explored the impact of the enterprise’s knowledge flow in the innovation knowledge network on the above relationships. We conducted the hierarchical regression analysis based on patent data in UAV industry from 2006 to 2020. The results showed that (1) in the flat period of industry development, only CTSP-Width has a direct positive impact on cross-industry innovation performance. (2) In the low-speed climbing period and the high-speed growing period, the impact of CTSP-Width disappears, and the direct positive impact of CTSP-Depth appears. (3) In the flat period, both the moderator roles of knowledge contribution and knowledge profitability are not significant. In the low-speed climbing period, only knowledge profitability plays the negative moderator role, while in the high-speed growing period, both the knowledge contribution and knowledge profitability play significant negative moderator roles. This suggests that, when the industry develops into maturity, the negative moderation effect of knowledge network gradually appears, which indicates that there is a knowledge network trap.

"Open innovation" and "external search" for new ideas are central topics in the recent discourse in innovation research. External search helps firms to identify new opportunities for innovation and alleviates the risks of local search. It is widely acknowledged that novel ideas regularly emerge from the combination of distant pieces of knowledge and interaction with "idea suppliers" from distant knowledge domains. However, the current discussion on open innovation has hardly touched upon the question of how firms can systematically search for cross-industry innovation inputs in the fuzzy front-end of the innovation process. This paper links relevant concepts of cognitive psychology and management theory — such as analogical problem solving and the principle of isomorphism — with open innovation in the front-end. It discusses relevant dimensions of systematic search for innovation across industries. A piloted framework is presented that assists firms in systematically and interactively searching for external innovation inputs in distant industries. This framework supports external innovation search in distant industries for a fuzzy customer problem. The results of this participatory action research indicate that a systematic and interactive search process is of practical value to innovation managers. It also points out contingencies of cross-industry innovation search.

Improving innovation efficiency is of great significance to the sustainable development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry as well as the regional economy. To measure the efficiency of the innovation process from the perspective of the ecosystem, a model, including three head-to-tail stages, namely the innovative production process, innovative integration process, and innovative application process, is established. The DEA-Malmquist index is used to evaluate the static and dynamic innovation efficiency of the Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing industry from 2009 to 2020. The results show that the overall innovation efficiency of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry fluctuated, and the industry has not yet achieved steady growth in innovation efficiency during 2009–2020. Cross-sectional data comparisons found that there are significant differences in innovation efficiency among provinces. To improve the innovation efficiency of the Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, several suggestions are proposed, such as improving the technical efficiency, improving the efficiency of the whole process in innovative ways, and bridging the gap in innovation efficiency across regions.

Over the past decades, financial innovation has catalysed the development of economies in many ways. Despite this, the introduction, commercialisation and use of innovations in finance in new and unexpected ways in society has led to negative impacts globally. To this end, scholars are becoming interested in understanding how financial innovations can be managed to ensure a positive net benefit globally. Using a qualitative research design, this paper investigates the questions of how innovation takes place and how it is governed within the insurance broking industry. The study further engages in a cross-case analysis where findings from the empirical work are discussed in relation to previous empirical study conducted in the asset management and bank customer relationship management space. Findings suggest the existence of a more nuanced continuum of practices, ranging from unstructured approaches through informal to formal models where the phasing of innovation activities was clearly punctuated by decision gates.

An intensive movement of people, which is typical in areas with strong tourism industry, is perceived to provide numerous positive externalities with regards to the diversity of cultures, ideas, and knowledge. Border regions act as natural contact zones experiencing the influx of tourists across borders. The borderland is expected to benefit from their geolocation and intensive cross-border cooperation, acting as testing grounds for external innovations. The article iS designed to test the interdependence between the tourism industry and innovation activity in the borderland. The study focuses on the western border regions of Russia, which is a highly divergent area in terms of socio-economic development and experiences challenging times in the context of geo-economic turbulence after 2014. By using the statistical research method, the study develops on evaluating the dynamics of indicators for tourism industry development and innovation activity. The eight-year period of 2012-2019 is applied for taking into account the lag in innovation performance resulting from the positive externalities of tourism. Results show that the growth in tourism industry and innovation activity of found in regions with intensive public expenditure on large-scale infrastructural projects.

The main aim of this article was to define the innovativeness of the tourism sector in cross-industry terms. The specific objectives were to identify categories of innovations implemented by tourism enterprises with division by industry branches, and to identify the differences and similarities of the innovations implemented by tourism enterprises in terms of the industry in which they operate. A conceptual framework, based on existing literature, was developed to analyze the innovation process. The research was carried out using the method of a diagnostic survey with interview elements, according to a structured research questionnaire using the telephone interview technique. The results show that tourism enterprises are characterized by average and low innovativeness. From the point of view of assessing the impact of innovation on market behavior in the tourism sector, there are no so-called disruptive innovations, which could have a decisive impact on market changes and replace the existing and constantly improved products, services, and processes. There are sustaining innovations that improve the functioning of companies, which do not affect the market changes, but do compete with the existing solutions on existing terms. However, incremental and adaptive innovations constitute an important part of innovation; this process proves the development of tourism companies and has an impact on the improvement of the situation of the entire economy.

To reveal the impact of knowledge base diversity (KBD) and network embeddedness on cross-industry innovation performance (CIP), we performed an empirical hierarchical regression analysis using patent data from the mobile phone industry. The results show the following. (1) There was an inverted U-shaped relationship between relevant KBD and CIP and a U-shaped relationship between nonrelevant KBD and CIP. (2) The effects of relevant KBD on CIP were negatively moderated by an enterprise’s structural embeddedness (SE) and relational embeddedness (RE) in the innovation network. (3) The effects of nonrelevant KBD on CIP were positively moderated by an enterprise’s SE and RE in the innovation network. The findings contribute to the body of knowledge on the influencing factors of CIP and provide guidance for cross-industry innovation practice.

Recent years have witnessed continuous rise in adopting green innovations which is considered as an important organizational instrument to achieve profits by reducing environmental deterioration. However, green innovation in developing countries, especially in Pakistan, is surprisingly scant as compared to developed countries. This paper empirically investigated obstacles to green innovations in Pakistani manufacturing firms. Specifically, a novel three phase methodological framework was applied to investigate significant barriers and filtration by integrating Delphi method (DM), interpretive structural modeling (ISM), and cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC). Our results highlighted that lack of enforceable laws regarding returned goods and recycled products, lack of rules and regulations for green practices, and lack of collaboration with government and environmental institutions are most critical barriers. However, fear of failure about green innovation is least important barriers to green innovations adoption. This study offers interesting clues to promote green innovation in manufacturing industry.

The relevance of cross-industry innovation has increased in recent decades with a growing number of inter-industry fields emerging on the borderline between formerly distinct industries. The aim of this paper is to analyse industry convergence in four probiotics innovation value chains based on the following indicators: cross-industry relationships along the innovation value chain as well as knowledge, technological, regulatory and competence convergence. In so doing, the study delivers a framework of indicators for scrutinising industry convergence processes. In order to identify industry convergence, we analyse companies in the converging area of foods and drugs based on products containing the four bacteria strains: Lactobacillus caseii DN 114001, Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12, Lactobacillus acidophilus LA5 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Hence, the commercial availability of the strains on the market serves as a selection criterion. Altogether 12 companies stemming from four industrial backgrounds, food and agriculture (5), pharmaceutics (5), chemistry (1) and personal care (1), as well as one research organisation are identified. Cross-industry relationships occur along the innovation value chains of the four strains. Clear signs of knowledge and technological convergence are found as companies are not only publishing and patenting in the usual area of their own industrial field but also in the area of other industrial fields. Companies with different industrial backgrounds show activities in obtaining health claims indicating regulatory convergence. Companies' competence bases seem to converge as companies with different industrial backgrounds are involved in acquisitions, licencing agreements and strategic alliances (competence convergence). We contribute to the existing body of literature by assessing industry convergence from an innovation value chain perspective with a set of indicators reflecting the intensity of industry convergence. This framework of indicators stemming from literature has not yet been used in a combined comprehensive analysis. Furthermore, we tried to show the characteristics of strategic types driving industry convergence in probiotics.

Successful innovation requires a company to participate in open innovation and to be connected with the ecosystems around it. For consumer electronics industry, this article distinguishes knowledge, experience and legislation/certification ecosystems. In order to draw the necessary knowledge from ecosystems for inbound open innovation, companies should involve all functional areas in the gathering information and trends from the ecosystems. While most companies involve marketing, development, and production, two key areas for ecosystem knowledge gathering often remain untapped: purchasing and the participation in external standardisation bodies. Successfully using all functional areas to gather ecosystem knowledge will lead to the right innovations at the right time. Regular cross-functional meetings ensure the appropriate translation of collected information and knowledge into portfolio and development choices. The article illustrates this by the example of TP Vision, the makers of Philips-branded televisions, which has successfully applied this innovation process in the consumer electronics (CE) industry.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the role that different external sources of knowledge play in product, process, market and organizational innovations in food SMEs. Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on a web-survey of 214 food European SMEs. Binary logistic regression models were utilized for data analysis. Findings – The findings support the recent studies that suggest that the introduction of different types of innovation is associated with different types of source of knowledge. They indicate that collaboration with customers matter for product innovations in food SMEs while collaboration with competitors is more important for organizational innovations in this type of firm. In addition, collaboration with science base actors does not appear relevant to innovation in food SMEs, supporting previous works that highlight the predominant role of market base actors in innovation in this type of firm. Research limitations/implications – In line with previous research on innovation in SMEs, the generalization of the findings to all European food SMEs may be limited due to the low response rate and the difficulties in collecting innovation data from micro-firms. Data used in the study were gathered from single informants also which may have resulted in self-report bias. Besides, cross-sectional data were employed so no causal inferences could be drawn. Originality/value – Although the food industry is a major sector for the European economy, little attention has been given to the sources of knowledge that may be used for innovation in this industry. This paper offers interesting insights into the importance of external sources for innovation. Moreover, past research dealing with collaboration for innovation usually focus on product and process innovations. The paper adds to these by incorporating market and organizational innovations.

AbstractFirms use open innovation strategy to explore external knowledge or exploit internal knowledge to benefit their product/service innovations, and thus enhance their innovation performance. However, a lack of relational mechanisms makes it more difficult for collaborative partners to share their knowledge assets. Existing literature lacks a clear explanation of how knowledge and relational mechanisms simultaneously function for innovation success. In response, this study attempts to answer: (1) Can archetypes of open innovation strategies be identified by knowledge and relational mechanisms simultaneously? And, (2) Do they differ in their ability to predict innovation success under the condition of innovation process characteristics? An exploratory study of 78 open innovation firms reflects four archetypes of open innovation strategies. A subsequent cross-industry survey of 248 open innovation firms in Taiwan reveals that the four archetypes of open innovation strategies result in varying degrees of innovation success, and innovation process characteristics positively moderate such associations.

Based on the enterprise knowledge-based view, this study follows the basic logic of “knowledge acquisition-knowledge transformation-knowledge creation” to explore the effects of cross-border search and knowledge co-creation on the service innovation performance of manufacturing enterprises. Furthermore, compositional capability is introduced to investigate the moderator in the connection of knowledge co-recreation and service innovation performance. We collected 378 samples from the organizations that are taking servicizing transformation in China’s manufacturing industry. Then we applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to test our research model. The results reveal that both cross-border technological knowledge search and cross-border market knowledge search can significantly improve embedded knowledge co-creation and alliance-based knowledge creation of manufacturing enterprises, and then, directly and indirectly, boost service innovation performance. Compositional capability positively moderates the relationship between embedded knowledge co-creation and service innovation performance. This study provides theoretical and practical guidance for knowledge-based service innovation in China’s manufacturing industry.

Over the past decades, financial innovation has catalysed the development of economies in many ways. Despite this, the introduction, commercialisation and use of innovations in finance in new and unexpected ways in society has led to negative impacts globally. To this end, scholars are becoming interested in understanding how financial innovations can be managed to ensure a positive net benefit globally. Using a qualitative research design, this paper investigates the questions of how innovation takes place and how it is governed within the insurance broking industry. The study further engages in a cross-case analysis where findings from the empirical work are discussed in relation to previous empirical study conducted in the asset management and bank customer relationship management space. Findings suggest the existence of a more nuanced continuum of practices, ranging from unstructured approaches through informal to formal models where the phasing of innovation activities was clearly punctuated by decision gates.

The objective of this paper was to empirically examine the impact of exports on the level of innovation in the manufacturing sector of Malaysia and to focus on the role of heterogeneity in exports by using detailed industry-level cross-sectional data on Malaysia’s manufacturing sector in 2014. Utilising the CDM model, as postulated by Crepon, Duguet & Mairesse (1998), this paper investigated whether exporting to more countries, exporting greater volumes, and exporting greater volumes to high-income countries induced industry to increase its level of innovation. Estimates from the CDM model showed, overall, a positive impact of exports on innovation, more specifically, heterogeneity in exports mattered to industries’ innovating in the manufacturing sector in Malaysia. Additionally, exporting to additional foreign destinations, exporting greater volumes of product, and exporting more products to low-income countries, especially to South Asian and Southeast Asian countries, had a significant influence on inducing industries to engage in innovation activities.

The external institutional environment is the foundation for the survival and development of enterprises. Enterprises can only obtain legitimate and heterogeneous resources through continuous strategic reform and institutional innovation to match their internal strategies with the external environment. The paper selected the manufacturing enterprises that implemented service-oriented transformation strategies in China from 2016–2019 as a sample based on the realistic background of frequent institutional changes and overlapping market changes during China’s economic transformation. The impact of different aspects of the institutional environment on service-oriented transformation and the moderating role of technological innovation capacity were examined empirically. The results showed that (1) improved government governance greatly facilitates the service-oriented transformation of manufacturing enterprises, which was more pronounced within the industry. The regulated development of the market facilitated service-oriented transformation within the industry in the short term, while the impact on cross-border transformation lagged. The improvement of the legalized business environment was conducive to the transformation of enterprises and promoted intra-industry transformation significantly more than cross-industry transformation. (2) Technological innovation capability strengthened the influence of institutional environment on intra-industry transformation, but had no significant impact on the relationship between institutional environment and cross-border transformation. (3) The moderating effect of technological innovation capability was markedly heterogeneous in terms of property rights and regional heterogeneity. The findings of this study provide an important reference for policy makers to break through the current institutional barriers to transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, and to reshape and optimize the institutional environment for the integration and development of the secondary and tertiary industries.

In the era of the knowledge economy, knowledge management is increasingly important. Knowledge management ability is one of the core factors influencing enterprise competitiveness, affecting innovation performance and sustainable development. To test the impact mechanism of the knowledge management of enterprises on innovation performance, a multilevel structural equation model was established using data from the automobile industry in China, with “knowledge management” (KM) as the independent variable, the three dimensions of absorptive capacity as the mediating variables, and “innovation performance” (IP) as the dependent variable at the firm level. At the cluster level, the innovation milieu of the cluster was introduced into the model. The results show that the three dimensions of absorptive capacity all significantly mediate the relationship between knowledge management and innovation performance. The innovation milieu of the cluster had a direct cross-level effect on the innovation performance of enterprises and a positive cross-level moderated effect on the relationship between explorative learning and innovation performance. These results support the promotion of enterprise innovation ability and the creation of an innovation milieu in the automobile industry in China.

Digital transition in the maritime industry creates new organizational models and affects the relationship between actors. New relationships require new business models (BMs). In addition, due to the paradigm of green shifts towards a zero-emission future of maritime shipping in 2050, stricter regulations require new solutions, and “business as usual” is not actual anymore. Thus, the study aims to investigate key drivers for creating new BMs and factors for their effective implementation by companies. The results of the study point to the main reasons for creating BMs. It was revealed that there are several external and internal prerequisites. Moreover, it was proved that considering the current tendency of the interfaces in relationships with different industries, it is important to talk about the development of BMs not only from a supply chain perspective. Moreover, it should be considered from the point of view of network value. Hence, the study highlights the need for a further investigation that aims to design new solutions, implement, test, and observe the effect of new BMs, considering collaborative ties between interested parties. The overall high-end of strategic emerging industries can be effectively promoted by strengthening the inter-industry innovation linkage effect. This paper constructs a strategic emerging industry innovation network based on industry correlation. This paper studies the development trend of the whole network structure and individual network characteristics and analyzes the influence of network structure characteristics on the attribute performance of each industry. The research results are as follows: (i) The innovation network as a whole was in a slight decline trend of low density during the sample investigation period, and the correlation level had great room for improvement. (ii) The high-end equipment manufacturing industry, the new materials industry, and the new-generation information technology industry occupy the center of the network, but their spillover effect on other industries is poor, and some industries even get more innovation benefits. (iii) The innovation network of China’s strategic emerging industries has the characteristics of cross-industry clustering, and the linkage effect between plates is insufficient, showing the characteristics of the “reflexivity” aggregation subgroup. (iv) The unreasonable connection mode of strategic emerging industries’ innovation network leads to the improvement of the centrality degree, which is not conducive to the innovation output of the industry. However, innovation output can be positively affected, to a certain extent, by improving the betweenness and closeness of the industries in the network.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how the cross-cultural collaboration between developed market and emerging economies promotes an inclusive global value chain (GVC) through innovation and technology transfer. Drawing on global rattan industry, this paper identifies the three typologies and social mechanism of cross-cultural collaboration in GVC. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a qualitative method with a case study of rattan industry. The case study analysis covers the linkages between upstream industries in emerging economies and downstream industries in developed countries. Findings The result shows that innovation and technology transfer play an essential role in the cross-cultural collaboration through presenting the creative value-adding process beyond the simple trade of rattan. This study identifies the social mechanism of cross-cultural collaboration in three GVC typologies of rattan industry. Research limitations/implications The study was undertaken between 2015 and 2017. The observed value chain in rattan industry context demonstrates the selected business network from Indonesia to the European countries. Practical implications There were some activities that worked well for decades, such as creative innovation and technology transfer from multinational corporations to small businesses. The initiative to promote brand seemed to work less well for the local designers in developing countries from being part of the GVC. The creative innovation and technology transfer from multinational corporations to rattan farmers continued to struggle. Originality/value This study draws a distinction between the typologies of GVC, where cross-cultural collaboration has developed slowly and those where it comes about quickly. This extends the discussion about creative value between players in developed and developing countries, including the social mechanism of cross-cultural collaboration in GVC.

We explore mechanisms of how knowledge integration is achieved at the individual level in cross-industry innovation projects. Our research is based on theory of cross-industry innovation (CII), absorptive capacity (ACAP), apprenticeship learning and communication as well as case analysis of seven cross-industry projects. To integrate external knowledge, actors in the target sector need to adopt — i.e., take ownership of — external knowledge from the source sector. We present a model by which such knowledge adoption is achieved. Central elements are the phases of knowledge acquisition, assimilation and transformation, a cyclic process of conveyance and convergence, and a bi-directional process of learning. Legitimacy, prior knowledge of CII collaboration and retranslation were found to be facilitators of the process. Our research extends current theory of knowledge integration in CII and provides managerial implications.

Particular attention was paid to the creation of contemporary models of innovation and the possibility of their implementation in the food industry. It was found that innovation should increasingly be based on the concept of open innovation. It assumes the active participation of many actors in the creation of cross-organizational knowledge and skills improvement. This paper examines the role of human capital and establishments’ practices in fostering food industry innovation across 13 low and middle-income countries. We estimate average marginal effects that also control for the variables traditionally recognized as affecting firm-level innovation, such as R&D expenditures. Our results suggest that establishments’ human capital endowments, such as top managers’ experience in the food industry and employees’ education, alone may not be sufficient to achieve high levels of innovation. In fact, human capital endowments are found to be more effective in delivering innovation when they are combined with establishments’ best practices such as providing employees slack time i.e., allocation of work-time on self-chosen projects of personal interests. Our key recommendation to food firms is to support employee slack time and human capital endowments as mutually reinforcing drivers of innovation.

This paper quantifies the contribution of technology gaps to international income inequality. I develop an endogenous growth model where cross-country differences in R&D efficiency and cross-industry differences in innovation and adoption opportunities together determine equilibrium technology gaps, trade patterns, and income inequality. Countries with higher R&D efficiency are richer and have comparative advantage in more innovation-dependent industries. I calibrate R&D efficiency by country and innovation dependence by industry using R&D, patent, and bilateral trade data. The study was anchored on McKinsey 7S Framework, Transaction Cost Innovation Theory, Porter’s 5 Forces Model and Dynamic Capabilities theory, and it sought to establish the effect of product innovation strategy, process innovation strategy and marketing innovation strategy on competitive advantage of insurance firms in Kenya. In addition, the moderating effect of regulatory environment on the relationship between innovation strategy and competitive advantage of insurance firms in Kenya was tested given the importance of the regulator. Methodology: The study used a cross sectional survey design where all the 55 insurance firms operating in Kenya and were targeted. Through purposive sampling, the study targeted employees in management positions, either from administration, sales and marketing, strategic division or Finance department. Both primary and secondary data was used to achieve the study objectives where they were used to establish trends, descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, correlation and regression analysis were conducted to test empirically the relationship between the study variables. The study results were presented in form of Tables and Figures. Findings: The findings revealed that product innovation strategy had a significant and positive influence on the competitive advantage of insurance industry in Kenya. Process innovation was also found to positively and significantly contribute to the competitive advantage of insurance industry in Kenya. The findings further revealed that marketing innovation was essential in enhancing the competitive advantage of insurance industry in Kenya. Regulatory framework was found to significantly moderate the relationship between innovation strategies and competitive advantage of insurance industry in Kenya. The study concluded that innovation strategies (product innovation, process innovation and marketing innovation) are essential in determining the competitive advantage of insurance industry in Kenya. Unique Contributions to theory, practice and policy: It is therefore recommended that the management of the insurance companies ought to uphold innovation strategy through marketing innovation, product innovation and process innovation so as to stimulate the competitive advantage of their respective insurance companies. The regulatory body, IRA, ought to set a clear framework on policies and regulations that govern insurance innovations so as to set a level ground for the companies to embrace innovation and enhance their competitive advantage.

The construction industry has made an indispensable contribution to China’s environmental and economic development. With the advent of the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) era, cross-organizational collaboration has enabled megaproject participants to engage significantly in problem-solving and technological innovation. The impact of innovation organization network on the synergy of cross-organizational technological innovation (COTI synergy) in megaprojects is imperative for theoretical researchers and engineering practitioners. Therefore, this study aims to develop a hypothetical model of innovation organization network and COTI synergy, focusing on the mediating role of interorganizational relationships and the moderating effect of the technological innovation environment. The results of 211 questionnaires from the Chinese construction industry show that innovation organization network improves COTI synergy. Trust and communication play a vital mediating role between innovation organization network and COTI synergy. Moreover, innovative culture has a significant positive moderating effect on innovation organization network and interorganizational relationships. From the perspective of organization network, this study provides new insights into the development of technological innovation management research on megaprojects, theoretical references, and practical suggestions for project teams in developing countries to improve collaborative technological innovation efficiency.

Анотація:

Purpose Given that Blockchain technology poses a growing challenge to the banking industry, this paper aims to analyse the innovation of Blockchain banking with regard to its systemic dimension, as well as dynamics of competition. The empirical research demonstrates how the systemic characteristics of Blockchain banking relate to the pursuit of strategies and to what extent these strategies influence the directional path and level of technology diffusion. Design/methodology/approach The research study uses a case study methodology to explore the strategic competition of Blockchain banking. The study proposes the systemic innovation model for analysing and tracking the path of innovations. The model can be applied to any industry to understand the process of innovation development and the strategies to win market share in the banking industry. This research makes a contribution towards the theory of technology diffusion to understand the directional path of innovations. Findings The analyses of findings reveal the situation whereby most banks still compete to create their own Blockchain banking systems. The analyses, based on the systemic innovation model, also shows the low systemic feature of Blockchain banking at present. From the technology diffusion perspective, the future of Blockchain banking may need cross-chain interoperability to support a full spectrum of payments and value exchanges on the internet of things. Originality/value The main contribution of this paper is the systemic analysis of the latest innovation of Blockchain banking. Given that the research also includes the major banking innovation cases of ATM/cash cards, credit cards and electronic fund transfer at the point of sale/debit cards, the comparative analyses offer strategic insights to predict the progress, as well as pattern of technology development and diffusion for the case of Blockchain banking.

This study investigates the factors influencing consumer acceptance of certain types of innovation in handicraft products. Another aim of the article is construct/scale development applicable to handicrafts because our study collected scale items from other studies and tried to develop constructs applicable to handicraft products. The descriptive analysis through a quantitative cross-sectional consumer survey was applied along with cluster analysis for consumer market segmentation following the acceptance of certain types of innovations. Eight factors were discovered through EFA. The construct scores for authenticity innovation, packaging innovation, value-adding, product improvement, product design innovation, alternative/new materials, quality materials, and technological innovations were used in the cluster analysis. The results show that most consumers are open to accepting innovation in handicrafts. Particularly, consumers prefer those innovations that do not modify the traditional features and characteristics of products, such as authenticity, packaging, and quality-related innovations. However, consumers considered technological innovations as more skeptical. The comparison of socio-demographic profile of consumer segments with their acceptance of innovation indicates that the younger generation and well-educated consumers are more willing to accept innovation in handicraft products. Contrarily, the old-age consumers were unwilling to accept the innovation and prefer to purchase authentic and quality products. Additionally, as income increases, people like more authentic and quality products. This study focused on an emerging topic for handicraft industry, that is, innovation considered controversial, challenging, and received less attention from scholars in past. Further, this study is the first of its kind to explore the consumer acceptance of innovation in handicraft products.
