The case histories of five men who met DSM-lll criteria for bulimia and details of their physical characteristics are given. Various eating disorder questionnaires were administered and the results indicated that most of these instruments would not have identified the men as suffering from an eating disorder. The necessity of caution in asserting the prevalence of bulimia using these measures is emphasised.

Field observations on 449 debris flows in the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, are summarized. Movement of debris is classified according to seven characteristic types designated for the purposes of the study. Data on the physical characteristics of the events are presented. An analysis of the data is made with reference to event initiation, yield, and deposition using both mechanistic and morphological criteria. For those events which initiate on an open slope, the infinite slope model is used to establish a relationship between field drainage class and slope angle, for assumed frictional and cohesive soil strength parameters. The field drainage classes are directly related to the postulated location of the groundwater surface within the depth of the rupture plane. Deposition of channelized events is found to be influenced by the ratio of channel width to channel gradient, with the onset of deposition expected when the ratio exceeds unity. Five classes of depositional area are proposed. The magnitude of debris material deposited by an event is described by a channel debris yield rate which shows considerable variation with each event type. The conclusions of this study are based on postevent field measurements of deposited and eroded debris material. A limitation of the study arises from the difficulty of accurately describing an event some years after it has taken place. The features of morphofunctional characteristics and their influence on sports selection in aerobics are analyzed in the article. Practical experience shows that the rapid training of athletes who specialize in aerobics depends on a certain type of physique. Therefore, today, there is a set of pedagogical and medical-biological criteria that determine the rapid training of athletes engaged in aerobics. In the course of numerous researches in the field of physical education and sports the morphological and functional indicators characterizing the fast-trained athletes specializing in aerobics have been revealed. The peculiarities of the human constitution attract the attention of researchers in studying the factors of success of activity in sports of higher achievements. Among the large number of constitutional indicators, the morphofunctional features of the athlete's body are of the greatest interest. They affect the manifestation of strength, flexibility, speed, endurance, performance and adaptation of the organism to different environmental conditions, the speed of recovery after physical and mental stress. Practical experience shows that the rapid training of athletes who specialize in aerobics depends on a certain type of physique. Therefore, today, there is a set of pedagogical and medical-biological criteria that determine the rapid training of athletes engaged in aerobics. At our time, the good is the sound of the health of people with social and economic development, science and technology progress and their access. On an economically and socially disadvantaged march, the flow of information, lower activity, and the greater loss of psychological and emotional strength are greater, which is more burdensome and weaker health. Pedagogical criteria for sports selection allow you to divide athletes who specialize in aerobics into fast and slow training, with significant differences in morphological performance.

The article analyzes the current state of professional training of future physical education teachers in higher education institutions of Ukraine for local lore on the basis of a competent approach. The criteria, indicators and levels of readiness of future physical education teachers for local lore in the course of their professional training are highlighted. A number of different approaches to the evaluation of the criteria for the formation of readiness of future specialists have been investigated. The correspondence of each criterion of readiness of future teachers of physical culture to local lore activity is established by the indicators reflecting qualitative and quantitative characteristics of its competences. On the basis of the analysis of the psychological and pedagogical literature, the indicators of the readiness of future teachers of physical culture for local lore are determined, namely: motivational, cognitive and activity. The boundaries of the level of preparedness of future physical education teachers for local lore are clearly defined on the basis of the competence approach: insufficient, sufficient and high. The criterion of formation of future physical education teachers' readiness for local lore is an objective characteristic that reflects its essential features and by means of which they make comparative assessment of the effectiveness of its formation in traditional and isolated pedagogical conditions. The structure of future physical education teachers' readiness for local history activities included a motivational component, a cognitive component, and an activity component. The level of readiness for local lore activity of future physical education teachers has been determined: insufficient level (low, reproductive), sufficient level (average, productive), high level (creative). The readiness of physical culture teachers for local lore is determined by the functions: cognitive, communicative, developmental, adaptive, informative, reflexive.

One of the most efficient methods of improving the durability of a product is applying different coatings to the working surface. The quality of decorative and protective coatings is determined by the quality of workpiece surface (roughness, texture, etc.), preparation of workpiece surface (contamination, presence of oxide films, degree of surface activation by ion etching), and the production methods. The article presents the results of a series of experiments in creating multi-component ion-plasma coatings by vacuum deposition on Ti-Al basis. A series of experiments aimed at obtaining single-layer coatings have been carried out using a certain pattern of sputtering in argon and nitrogen environment. The obtained coatings can have a wide variety of colors. Different properties of the created coatings including spectral characteristics, reflection coefficient at different angles of incidence of light as well as chemical composition have been studied. The energy-dispersive electron microprobe analysis revealed the dependence of coating reflection coefficient and spectral characteristics on the chemical composition.

This study aimed to present a standard and normal distribution of Taekwondo athletes’ physical characteristics and physical fitness profiles using a systematic review. A systematic search was conducted using four Korean databases (Research Information Sharing Service, National Digital Science Library, DBpia, and Korean Studies Information Service System). From 2010 to 2020, we reviewed 838 papers on Taekwondo athletes’ physical characteristics and physical fitness factors (e.g., body composition, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, power, agility, balance, speed, and reaction time). Of them, 24 papers were selected and analyzed. The criteria for selecting the physical characteristics and physical fitness factors for data extraction were set to have a total sample size of more than 30 individuals and included two or more studies. The sample size and average and standard deviation of physical characteristics and physical fitness factors were extracted from each selected study. In this study, the estimation error of all variables, except for the eyes-closed single-leg stance (15.71%), was less than 8%. Therefore, it was confirmed that there was no problem with the validity of the estimated values. These results could be used as an essential objective basis for evaluating the physical characteristics and physical fitness profiles of Taekwondo athletes in most countries worldwide and setting training goals.

The increasing volume of consumption of probiotics and functional food products requires determination of standardized criteria for cultures and their exometabolites used in functional products manufacturing. The study was aimed at developing criteria for the estimation and standardization of exometabolites and the colony-forming ability of probiotic strains for functional food production. The work included such microbiological and physicochemical methods as GC-MS, GPC, UV, and FT-IR-spectroscopy. Based on the results of the study, the comparative analysis of the microbiological properties of probiotic Bifidobacterium strains was provided, the fatty acid composition of the cell wall was described, and the physical and chemical study of the exopolymers produced by them was carried out. According to the data of FT-IR- spectroscopy, the characteristic features of the components of the cell wall of Bifidobacterium strains were established. Bifidobacteria form the unique composition of organophosphorus structures of lipoteichoic acids, which determines the adhesive ability of strains. The authors studied the molecular weight distribution of the samples of exometabolites isolated from the nutrient medium after the cultivation of bifidobacteria, under conditions of gel-permeation chromatography. The spectral (UV, FT-IR) characteristics of the produced metabolites and their chromatographic fractions were compared. The fatty acids of the Bifidobacterium cell membrane were analyzed using the GC/MS method. The fatty acids were extracted from bacterial cells with different hydrophobicity with a mixture of chloroform and hexane. It has been established that the hydrophobicity is determined by different contents of unsaturated and branched fatty acids in the bacterial membrane. Hydrophobic bifidobacteria are the only that contain the isopentadecane (isoC15:0) and methyl-tetradecanoic (13Me-C14:0) acids. With the mean hydrophobicity, a high content of the isopalmitic (isoC16:0) and stearic (C18:0) acids was established. Low-hydrophobic strains are characterized by a low content of monounsaturated fatty acids.

AbstractThe geophysical and dynamical criteria introduced in the “Definition of a Planet in the Solar System” adopted by the International Astronomical Union are reviewed. The classification scheme approved by the IAU reflects dynamical and geophysical differences among planets, “dwarf planets” and “small Solar System bodies”. We present, in the form of a decision tree, the set of questions to be considered in order to classify an object as an icy “dwarf planet” (a plutoid). We find that there are 15 very probable plutoids; plus possibly 9 more, which require a reliable estimate of their sizes. Finally, the most relevant physical and dynamical characteristics of the set of icy “dwarf planets” have been reviewed; e.g. the albedo, the lightcurve amplitude, the location in the different dynamical populations, the size distributions, and the discovery rate.

The present study examines the acts of ancient church councils as the objects of textual practices, in their editorial shaping and in their material conditions. The book analyses the purposes and expectations governing and inscribed into the use and creation of these acts. It traces the processes of their production, starting from the recording of spoken interventions during a meeting, to the preparation of minutes of individual sessions, to their collection into larger units, their storage, and the earliest attempts at their dissemination. It contends that the preparation of ‘paperwork’ is central to the work of a council, and much of its effectiveness resides in the relevant textual and bureaucratic processes. As council leaders and administrators paid careful attention to the creation of a ‘proper’ record suited to their requirements, they also scrutinized documents and records of previous occasions with equal attention and inspected document features meant to assure and project validity and authority. From the evidence of such examinations the study further reconstructs the textual and physical characteristics of ancient conciliar documents and the criteria of their assessment. Papyrological evidence and contemporary legal regulations are used to contextualize these efforts. The book seeks to demonstrate that scholarly attention to the production processes, character, and material conditions of council acts is essential to their understanding, and to any historical and theological research into the councils of the ancient church.

Designing for Democracy addresses the question of how to “fix” digital technologies for democracy by examining how the design of the built environment (whether streets, sidewalks, or social media platforms) informs how, and whether, citizens can engage in democratic practices. “Democratic spaces”—built environments that support democratic politics—must have three characteristics: they must be clearly bounded, durable, and flexible. Each corresponds to a necessary democratic practice. Clearly bounded spaces make it easier to recognize what we share and with whom we share; they help us form communities. Durable spaces facilitate our attachments to the communities they house and the other members within them; they help us sustain communities. And flexible spaces facilitate the experimental habits required for democratic politics; they help us improve our communities. These three practices—recognition, attachment, and experimentalism—are the affordances a built environment must provide in order to be a “democratic space”; they are the criteria to which designers and users should be attentive when building and inhabiting the spaces of the built environment, both physical and digital. Using this theoretical framework, Designing for Democracy provides new insights into the democratic potential of digital technologies. Through extended discussions of examples like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, it suggests architectural responses to problems often associated with digital technologies—loose networks, the “personalization of politics,” and “echo chambers.” In connecting the built environment, digital technologies, and democratic theory, Designing Democracy provides blueprints for democracy in a digital age.

Supplier evaluation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in healthcare institutions is a crucial problem, and the success of the healthcare system is significantly affected by this decision. In this chapter, several criteria, such as physical characteristics, cost, efficiency, speed, security, productivity, providing advanced technology, technical service and warranty, capable personnel, and in-service training, have been examined in the context of healthcare ICT supplier evaluation. These criteria are evaluated by both medical and administrative executives (N = 48) in 26 university hospitals operating in various provinces in Turkey. Findings show that medical and administrative executives and female and male executives in hospitals differ in terms of their evaluation of ICT suppliers. Overall, this study proposes to contribute to the relevant literature and practice, and reflects the perspective of a developing country, Turkey.

The promotion of social living quality has expedited the development of leisure exercise products. However, most young people usually accomplish their tasks by sitting in front of the computers. This situation makes many people seriously deficient in exercises that may cause muscle skeleton declination. In review of current related products, most of them are primarily designed by designers’ intuition or only for a specific purpose. The objective of this research is to involve the motion analysis of physical musculoskeletal system in the integrated development process of quality function deployment for the design of lower limb leisure exercise products. A four-stage of development procedure including performance ranges of muscle-joint activities, AIO life style questionnaire, factor analysis, and quality function deployment is conducted. The implementation of quality function deployment helps to link customer requirements with product characteristics and derives design criteria for generating design alternatives. Two design alternatives based on the design criteria are generated by the computer-aided design software. It is expected that this research will provide designers with a reference or norm on designing most suitable lower limb leisure exercise products for people.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), also known as stress cardiomyopathy, left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome, and broken heart syndrome, is a syndrome of acute heart failure and transient ventricular dysfunction that is frequently precipitated by acute emotional or physical stress. A wide variety of emotional and physical stressors have been associated with this syndrome, and while acute stress is temporally related to syndrome onset in the majority of patients, a subset of patients have no identifiable antecedent trigger at the time of presentation. The syndrome has a striking predilection for older postmenopausal women, though it has been reported in men and in younger patients as well. The incidence of TTS is higher than initially thought and accounts for up to 5–10% of women presenting with a suspected acute coronary syndrome. Several groups have proposed variable criteria for the diagnosis of TTS, but universally accepted criteria are currently lacking. While patients with TTS typically present with chest pain, dynamic electrocardiographic changes, and elevated cardiac biomarkers, characteristic features of the syndrome that help to distinguish it from an acute myocardial infarction include the absence of plaque rupture and coronary thrombosis, unique patterns of ventricular dysfunction that typically involve more than one vascular territory, and rapid and complete recovery of ventricular systolic function. While the prognosis associated with TTS is generally favourable, the condition is not benign and has been associated with serious complications such as cardiogenic shock, thromboembolic events, and life-threatening arrhythmias. This chapter will highlight the clinical features that characterize TTS and that are central to its diagnosis.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), also known as stress cardiomyopathy, left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome, and broken heart syndrome, is a syndrome of acute heart failure and transient ventricular dysfunction that is frequently precipitated by acute emotional or physical stress. A wide variety of emotional and physical stressors have been associated with this syndrome, and while acute stress is temporally related to syndrome onset in the majority of patients, a subset of patients have no identifiable antecedent trigger at the time of presentation. The syndrome has a striking predilection for older postmenopausal women, though it has been reported in men and in younger patients as well. The incidence of TTS is higher than initially thought and accounts for up to 5–10% of women presenting with a suspected acute coronary syndrome. Several groups have proposed variable criteria for the diagnosis of TTS, but universally accepted criteria are currently lacking. While patients with TTS typically present with chest pain, dynamic electrocardiographic changes, and elevated cardiac biomarkers, characteristic features of the syndrome that help to distinguish it from an acute myocardial infarction include the absence of plaque rupture and coronary thrombosis, unique patterns of ventricular dysfunction that typically involve more than one vascular territory, and rapid and complete recovery of ventricular systolic function. While the prognosis associated with TTS is generally favourable, the condition is not benign and has been associated with serious complications such as cardiogenic shock, thromboembolic events, and life-threatening arrhythmias. This chapter will highlight the clinical features that characterize TTS and that are central to its diagnosis.

The Patagonian steppes and the Río de la Plata grasslands occupy a vast proportion of the plains, plateaus, and hills of southern South America, and are characterized by the almost absolute absence of trees. Prairies and steppes (grass and low shrubs) are the dominant physiognomic types, and forests are restricted to some riparian corridors. Savannas become important only in the ecotones of these regions, whereas meadows may be locally important under particular topographic or edaphic conditions. The Río de la Plata grasslands (RPG), one of the most important grassland regions in the world, extend between 28°S and 38°S latitude, covering about 700,000 km2 of eastern Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. The boundaries of these grasslands include the Atlantic coastline to the east, dry temperate forests to the south and west, and subtropical humid forests to the north. Woody vegetation within the region is restricted to small areas near water bodies, such as the gallery forests along the large Paraná and Uruguay rivers and their tributary streams. The Patagonian steppes occupy the southern tip of the continent from approximately 40°S, and are framed by the Andes to the west and the Atlantic coast to the east and south and cover more than 800,000 km2 of Chile and Argentina. Toward the west, the region displays a sharp ecotone with the subantarctic forests, whereas to the north it grades into a broad zone of Monte scrublands in central Argentina. The RPG and the Patagonian steppes are separated by a wide strip of woody vegetation, the Monte and Espinal phytogeographic units (see chapter 10; Cabrera and Willkins, 1973). In this chapter, we describe the heterogeneity and main characteristics of the dominant ecosystems of the Patagonian steppes and the RPG, focusing on environmental controls and human-induced changes. Although numerous criteria have been applied to describe the internal heterogeneity of both regions, we emphasize here the structural and functional attributes of vegetation as integrators of climate, physiography, and land use.

Universal Design (UD) aims to provide designed environments that allow users to fully participate in all kinds of activities. Especially, the design of Sport and Leisure buildings should support and encourage the participation of mobility and sensory impaired people in any physical and social activity. Yet, the variety of physical and social users’ needs calls for different approaches to investigate, analyze and assess how the environment fulfills users’ needs and expectations. This paper presents a new analytical model that: a) investigates how people with mobility, visual, and hearing impairments interact with specific architectural features; b) links the examined user-environment interaction with the user’s personal assessment of the spatial experience. The study employs the literature review of the existing analytical models, which are based on the concept of user-environment interaction and framed around empirically deducted basic human needs. These models address the issue of user-environment fit by focusing on the identification of environmental barriers. Also, some of these models are too descriptive and cannot inform the practice in creative design processes. The proposed analytical model, which is built upon the theoretical concepts of affordances and usability, aims to develop a qualitative evaluation method for identifying environmental facilitators by linking the design of architectural characteristics with the influenced perception of users of the physical and social aspects of the built environment. The model consists of three groups of elements: (1) users’ physical abilities; (2) architectural features and (3) usability criteria. The inter-relations of each element across the groups develop the narrating scenarios that can be investigated from the user’s perspective. This new model does not only advance the understanding of the spatial experiences of persons with mobility and sensory impairments but also offers new insights for exploring UD solutions by identifying the architectural features that enlarge the spectrum of possible user-environment interactions.

Thus, testing becomes an intensive process in the IoT that will require some normalization too. The composite architecture of IoT systems and their distinctive characteristics require different variants of testing to be done on the components of IoT systems. This chapter will discuss the necessity for IoT testing in terms of various criteria of identifying and fixing the problems in the IoT systems. In addition, this chapter examines the core components to be focused on IoT testing and testing scope based on IoT device classification. It also elaborates the various types of testing applied on healthcare IoT applications, and finally, this chapter summarizes the various challenges faced during IoT testing.

Failure criteria have a significant role in the design of composite structural systems. Often the questions of “which criterion is more physical” and “which criterion is the best” create uncertainty in the design decision making process. To underline the ill-posed nature of both of these questions in the present paper we are describing the initial steps of an effort to address two ontological characteristics of failure criteria as they are applicable to composite materials applications. The first characteristic is the non-objective nature of failure criteria and an informal description is provided. The second characteristic is an ontologically based cross-reducibility between criteria. To underline more formally this characteristic we utilize an ontology-based framework to clarify “how a criterion relates with another” in terms of its main semantic attributes. The non-physical nature of a theory is exposed when it is evaluated from the semantic view of a systemic perspective. The human role on the formation of any failure criterion is shown to have a foundationally subjective character, thus rendering the corresponding criterion as non-objective. In the context of the second effort, the creation of classification ontology in terms of the semantic projections of failure criteria in their structural heritage and usage is created. The common attributes of failure criteria are utilized to identify the bases of the attribute space that they can be ontologically classified. Web ontology software is utilized to aid the ontological construction process and the visual interpretation of the ontological context. The derived cross-reducibility suggests that failure theories are special reductions of one another.

Abstract The objective of the project is to develop water mist extinguishments design by scaling. The report describes the requirement and criteria of scaling fire, scale model, and the results of suppression for a developing water mist system design. The Maritime Safety Committee Draft Circular, MSC 914 is used as a basis test to evaluate a water mist design. A series of three full-scale tests related to MSC 914 were performed: fire only, fire with steel trailers, and fire with steel trailers and combustible commodities. A simulation was accordingly studied. Then, a scaled water mist design was tested in the scale model to find the characteristics needed for suppression in terms of pressure, water flow rate, droplet size, and the spray momentum. Based on these characteristics, a candidate nozzle will be selected for the full-scale MSC 914 test. The results so far show that the water mist system can effectively suppress the fire in scaled MSC 914 model. The full-scale MSC 914 is scheduled for September 2001. Therefore, the final answer is still pending until then. Scaling results are confirmed for temperatures, heat flux and flow for the MSC 914 fire without water add in.

Abstract As part of the process of deploying new floating offshore wind turbines, scale model testing is carried out to de-risk and verify the design of novel foundation concepts. This paper describes the testing of a 1:43 Froude-scaled model of the TetraSpar Demo floating wind turbine prototype that shall be installed at the Metcentre test facility, Norway. The TetraSpar floating foundation concept consists of a floater tetrahedral structure comprising of braces connected together through pinned connections, and a triangular keel structure suspended below the floater by six suspension lines. A description of the experimental setup and program at the Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Lab at University of Maine is given. The objective of the test campaign was to validate the initial design, and contribute to the development of the final demonstrator design and numerical models. The nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics of the design are illustrated experimentally and the keel suspension system is shown to satisfy design criteria.

Abstract. Introduction. The relevance of the research topic is due to the need to develop and scientifically substantiate physiological criteria for assessing working conditions in difficult cases according to indicators of the functional state of the body (in accordance with the section "General hygienic assessment of working conditions" of Guideline R 2.2.2006-05). The aim of the work is to determine changes in the functional state of the body in workers of mental, visual-intense, physical activity on the basis of complex physiological and hygienic studies to substantiate quantitative physiological criteria for different classes of labor intensity. Materials and methods. Complex industrial physiological and hygienic studies included an assessment of the degree of labor intensity with the analysis of retrospective data, physiological studies of the central nervous system, visual analyzer, neuromuscular apparatus, cardiovascular system of mental workers (52 groups), visually stressful (32), physical labor ( 71 professional group). Statistical processing of the obtained data was carried out using the statistical software Statistika 10, Microsoft Excel 2010. Research results. It is shown that the depth and time of the onset of physiological changes depend on the degree of labor intensity, which makes it possible to calculate the percentage of decrease in functions, taking into account the intensity class of the labor process. The list of physiological criteria for confirming the class of working conditions is determined by the characteristics of labor activity, with mental work these are indicators of concentration of attention and the volume of working memory, with visually intense labor, the critical frequency of fusion of light flashes, with physical labor, muscle endurance and heart rate. Conclusions. Quantitative physiological criteria have been established for various types of labor activity, which provide a valid evidence-based assessment of the class of working conditions according to the characteristics of the intensity of the labor process and control of the levels of the functional state.

Abstract In this paper a multiple criteria optimization method is used to achieve the optimum selection of cutting conditions and tool inserts for finish turning operations. The utility function which maps criterion vectors into the real line is constructed based on tool-life and material removal rate. This unified objective function serves as an arbiter balancing the values of the individual objective functions. Different formats of utility functions are developed and their physical significance is analyzed. Other major machining performance characteristics such as surface roughness, cutting force, power requirements and chip breakability are used as constraints to define acceptable limits on these criteria, along with the limits on the ranges of the process variables. A hybrid process model which uses combinations of the metal cutting theories and an expandable database of experimental results is used to describe the interrelationships between the machining performance criteria and the process variables. Nonlinear programming techniques coupled with numerical methods for data interpolation are then applied to identify optimum process conditions for a given tool insert. Furthermore, for any specified application a cutting tool can be selected through comparative analyses. A sample case for a typical tool insert was studied and the results are presented.

The high-loaded centrifugal compressor blisk-type impeller, one of the main low-sized gas-turbine engine components, strongly affects engine efficiency. However, its design is a time-consuming and complex task for several reasons, including its high loading, the large number of structural and technological constraints, and the variety of requirements needed for application to a gas-turbine engine centrifugal compressor impeller (e.g., increased efficiency and strength, minimized weight requirements, etc.). The imposition of several constraints for structure modification of the centrifugal wheels can improve one characteristic but can worsen others. The standard solution for this problem is to use an iterative approach, whereby the design process is reduced to a consistent set of impeller element design problem statements and decisions; these are separate for different analysis disciplines. The main drawbacks to this approach are that it is labor intensive and can cause deterioration of the design quality because this procedure does not consider the design object as a unit. The present work considers a centrifugal compressor wheel design approach based on the use of an integrated multidisciplinary parameterized 3D model. This model includes a number of specialized sub-models that describe the necessary design areas as well as physical process features and phenomena occurring in the designed object. The model also realizes the integration and interaction of sub-models used in an integrated computing space. The proposed approach allows the optimization of the structure based on several criteria, such as the mass of the wheel, stage efficiency, strength, economic indicators, etc. The result of multi-criteria optimization is not a single product design, but a set of optimal Pareto points, which describes a number of centrifugal wheel models. The optimal configuration is selected from this set, based on what is considered the most important criterion. Optimization criteria may vary depending on the problem formulation, but the design technology, parameterization scheme, and choice of multidisciplinary integrated mathematical model are retained. Therefore, in the case of a product requirement correction, a new optimal design will require less time. In aggregate, with the nonlinear constrained optimization application, this approach reduces the total time of the design cycle, decreases development costs, and improves quality.

Abstract This paper addresses the analysis of die attach disbonds (delaminations) of silicon die in a multichip module (MCM). A silicon die attached to a silicon substrate in an MCM requires good adhesion for thermal dissipation and reliability purposes. Traditionally, die attach is evaluated by destructively measuring adhesion or non-destructively measuring voiding through x-ray radiography. For this paper, non-destructive acoustic microscopy and destructive dye penetrant testing were used to supplement the x-ray radiography. A sample in which x-ray radiography showed little die attach voiding had significant die attach disbonds at both the die/die attach interface as well as the die attach/substrate interface. The disbonds were identified by the acoustic microscope. Interpretation of the acoustic microscopy data proved complex and required careful comparison of the C-mode images generated with the A-scans at specific locations. The nature of the disbonds at the A-scan locations was confirmed using dye penetrant testing, metallurgical cross section and optical microscopy. The disbonded areas can change the thermal dissipation characteristics and mechanical stress distribution of the sample and indicate processing problems. X-ray radiography is effective for determining density variations or voiding in the die attach and acoustic microscopy is effective for determining interface characteristics and the combination of the two techniques provides an excellent approach for evaluating die attach in MCM’s. These techniques can be applied to interfacial analysis of other structures and can be used to characterize interfaces for modeling and establish evaluation criteria for non-destructive process monitoring.

The propagation of a fuel concentration disturbance in a premixer is studied analytically with a 3-D spatio-temporal mixing model. A simple analytical method is introduced which permits the frequency response characteristics of multiple points of fuel injection in simple (yet meaningful) premixer passage geometries to be obtained. The results provide physical insight into some of the design parameters that may affect the amplitude of FAR fluctuations coming out of a premixer when it is subjected to finite amplitude pressure waves. The possibility of a given design to lead to amplification of pressure waves (Rayleigh’s criteria) can be influenced by the characteristics of the mixing processes in a premixer channel. Results obtained in this paper may affect the design implementation of some of the proposals made for the control of combustion instability such as introduction of multiple time delays through selective fuel placement in a premixer.

Abstract The waves generated by ships and boats (often referred to as wake wash, wave wake or simply wash) have been known to result in the erosion of riverbanks, damage to maritime structures, or be hazardous to other users of the waterway. The vast majority of research in this field to date has focused on the characteristics of these waves when the vessel is travelling at constant forward speed. Recent work by the authors has identified significant transient effects that occur while a vessel accelerates up to the desired operational speed, where both the height and period of the maximum wave generated are significantly greater than those generated at the corresponding steady-state speed. This notable increase in wave energy can be important, particularly where vessels are required to accelerate on a regular basis when operating in sheltered waterways with limited water depth. Common examples are commuter ferries that make regular passages between passenger terminals and hence pass through the transcritical speed zone to operate at supercritical speeds (in terms of depth Froude number). In this paper, a study into these transient effects through physical scale-model experimentation is expanded to include different hull forms, including a typical “low wash” catamaran river ferry and a prismatic monohull. Results indicate that the increase in height of the maximum wave can exceed 80% and the period of this wave increase by more than 30% as a result of the acceleration phase compared to the steady-state speed. This poses the question whether these transient effects should form part of the assessment process when considering whether a vessel meets criteria imposed to regulate wash impacts. The same model scale data is also used to advise the model test community the required distance for a ship model to achieve a steady-state following the acceleration phase during model scale tests in facilities such as towing tanks or basins.

Eligibility criteria: Participants and context: We will include primary studies (randomized or non-randomized trials, observational studies, case series or case report) that consider hospitalized critically ill adult patients (18 years or older) in risk for developing some degree of neuromuscular disorders such as ICU-AW, diaphragmatic dysfunction, or muscle weakness, therefore the specific setting will be critical care. Concept: This review will be focused on studies regarding the secretion or measure of myokines or similar (exerkines, cytokines or interleukin) by any mean of muscle activation or muscle contraction such as physical activity, exercise or NMES, among others. The latter strategies must be understood as any mean by which muscle, and there for myocytes, are stimulated as result of muscle contraction, regardless of the frequency, intensity, time of application and muscle to be stimulated (upper limb, lower limb, thoracic or abdominal muscles). We also will consider myokine´s effects, local or systemic, over different tissues in terms of their structure or function, such as myocytes function, skeletal muscle mass and strength, degree of muscle wasting or myopathies, among others.
