Synthetic pigments have been used in the cosmetics industry for a very long time in everything from lipsticks to eye shadows. However, the hunt for sustainable and secure alternatives is driven by escalating environmental and health concerns. A feasible alternative that offers benefits in terms of biodegradability, sustainability, and safety is bacteria-based pigments. The potential of bacterial pigments in cosmetics is explored in this review article by focusing on their sources, extraction processes, and advantages over synthetic alternatives. The study also explores the safety and regulatory framework pertaining to bacterial pigments and presents actual case studies of their successful application in cosmetic products. A scenario on the potential impact of bacterial pigments on the cosmetics market is provided as a conclusion. The demand for various cosmetics is on rise and ever-increasing due to the inherent desire to look beautiful. A marked increase in women’s use of different cosmetic formulations has been witnessed in recent years. Varieties of cosmetics from different manufacturers are available in the market. Synthetic colors have been used in cosmetics for a long time, resulting in human health risks and environmental pollution. Therefore it is critical to search for novel natural pigments that are safe and alternative to synthetic ones. Compared to synthetic colors, microbial pigments show better biodegradability and greater compatibility with the environment.

Fiqh muamalah cosmetics is a study of the law on the use of cosmetics. Although cosmetics are synonymous with women, basically cosmetics are a need for everyone which has a very broad scope. The government through the Majelis Ulama Indonesia is increasingly educating the public regarding halal cosmetics and issuing regulations related to the cosmetic industry to include halal labels as a form of protection for Muslim consumers. Although there have been many halal cosmetics on the market, this is not followed by Muslim awareness to use them. There have been many studies and discussions from previous research on cosmetic fiqh or halal cosmetics. One of them concludes that a person's religion is not a determinant in using halal cosmetics. The purpose of this study was to see the extent of academic studies or discussions about fiqh muamalah cosmetics or halal cosmetics. The research method used is a qualitative approach, namely content analysis of articles from the Google Scholar database. By mapping the themes of previous studies through literature studies. From a search on the Google Scholar database with the keywords "fiqh" and "cosmetics" or "halal cosmetics" in the period 2017 to 2022, 168 articles were found which were then selected into 38 articles that were considered still relevant to the themes discussed. Of the 38 selected articles, they have been grouped into several themes: 1) An overview of Islamic law related to make-up and the use of cosmetics. 2) Halal Labeling and Interest in Cosmetics. 3) Cosmetics business in Islamic Business Ethics.

Abstract A survey was conducted to assess both the potential health risk from shared-use cosmetics caused by microorganisms and the microbial efficacy of preservatives in cosmetics. Samples of 3027 shared-use cosmetic products were collected from 171 retail establishments nationwide. Fungi were present in 10.4% of the products, and 3.9% contained fungal pathogens or opportunistic pathogens. The 423 fungal isolates identified represented 33 genera and at least 69 species. A disproportionately large share of the fungal isolates were from eye products; fewer were from lip products. Pathogenic or opportunistic pathogens made up 32.2% of the fungal isolates. A slightly lower percentage of samples that contained preservatives had fungi, a fact suggesting that preservatives reduce the incidence of fungi in cosmetics. Results of this survey indicate potential microbiological problems concerning the safety of shareduse cosmetics.

Background. Rabbit skin model was used to test skin irritation of the most commonly used cosmetic products in Jimma town, southwestern Ethiopia. The most commonly used cosmetics were Dove, Glysolid, College, Top Society, Fair and Lovely, Nivea, Lux, Magic fruit world, Solea, Body talk, Kris, Holly, Victoria, and Sweet Heart.Methods. Intact and abraded rabbit skins were tested for erythema and edema under shade and under sun exposure. Draize Primary Irritation Index (PII) was used to calculate skin irritation of each cosmetic. Cosmetic ingredients were analyzed from the labels. Results and Discussion. Only Dove cream caused no skin irritation except for an abraded skin under sun exposure for five consecutive days. It has been identified that application of cosmetics on abraded skin under sunny condition worsens the irritation. Cosmetic labels revealed that most ingredients used in all products were those restricted chemicals due to their adverse health effects.Conclusion. This study has concluded that use of cosmetics under sunshine and also on abraded skin increases skin irritation. Hence, those users who have abraded skin are advised not to apply those cosmetics on continuous basis specifically under sun exposure.

The cosmetic industry is searching for new active ingredients from renewable natural sources to make more environmentally friendly and safe products. Botanical extract is a nearly limitless source of these new actives due to the current consumer demands as well as international regulations. Due to both their fragrant nature for the creation of fragrances and perfumes and the numerous advantageous properties of their individual components (EOCs), such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, essential oils (EOs) emerge as a very common natural ingredient in cosmetics and toiletries. Additionally, nowadays, the cosmetic industry includes EOs or different mixtures of their individual components (EOCs), either as active ingredients or as preservatives, in various product ranges (e.g., moisturizers, lotions, and cleansers in skin care cosmetics; conditioners, masks or anti-dandruff products in hair care products; lipsticks, or fragrances in perfumery). However, because each essential oil’s distinct chemical profile is linked to a different set of advantages, it is challenging to generalize about how they might be used in cosmetics and toiletries. Formulators frequently spend time looking for appropriate combinations of EOs or EOCs to achieve particular advantages in the finished products. The literature on the most recent developments in the use of EOs and EOCs in the production of cosmetic products is updated in this work’s review of the literature. Additionally, certain particular issues pertaining to the security of EOs and EOCs in cosmetics will be covered. It is expected that the information contained in this comprehensive review can be exploited by formulators in the design and optimization of cosmetic formulations containing EOs.

This experiment examined whether a female applicant's hair color and use of cosmetics might affect perceptions of her ability for a professional position. One hundred thirty six college students reviewed the identical professional resume of a female applicant for the position of a staff accountant. Attached to the resume was a photograph of the stimulus female applicant either wearing or not wearing cosmetics and depicted with brunette, red, or blonde hair color. The results demonstrated significant main effects of both hair color and cosmetic use. Specifically, the applicant was rated more capable and was assigned a higher salary both when depicted with brunette hair color and when depicted without cosmetics. There were no interactions between hair color and cosmetic use. The findings demonstrate that biases regarding personal appearance may affect judgments about a female applicant's ability.

The average woman uses 12 different cosmetic products every day, but they can have a negative effect on human health. Therefore, in recent years, consumer preferences have changed towards buying natural or ecological cosmetics free from preservatives or unnecessary dyes. The aim of this work is to discuss the use of dyes, minerals, and vitamins in cosmetics in terms of their safety and impact on human health. These substances are very important in the cosmetics industry. Most of them are of natural origin. Some minerals used in the production of face masks or creams are recommended to work against inflammations such as ulcers and acne. Clay minerals have exceptional qualities, among others, low or no toxicity and high bio-compatibility. However, some of them may be harmful. For example, the safety of using talc has been widely debated in recent years. Cosmetic-grade talc cannot contain detectable fibrous asbestos minerals. Moreover, talc should not be applied to the skin when the epidermal barrier is missing or significantly disrupted. The use of talc in cosmetic products in the European Union is restricted. Vitamins are one of the most commonly used, biologically active, and easily accessible components in cosmetics. For example, provitamin B5 (D-panthenol) is a bioactive substance. In cosmetic preparations, it has a softening, repairing, and anti-inflammatory effect and is responsible for regulating sebum secretion. However, some vitamins may be harmful to human health. For example, the use of skin-whitening cosmetics containing vitamin C causes allergic contact dermatitis, whereas the most common adverse effect of topical use of vitamin A is skin irritation, erythema, and peeling. Dyes, which are used to color cosmetics, do not improve the condition of the skin, hair, or nails. Some of them may be harmful to human health. For example, the dye CI 60730 (Acid Violet 43) is prohibited for use in eye products and cosmetics that have contact with mucous membranes. In conclusion, some of the popular cosmetic ingredients discussed in this paper may exert a negative influence on human health, and many of these harmful effects have been discovered recently. Therefore, there is a need for further studies on the possible negative effects of dyes, minerals, and vitamins used in cosmetic products.

The writing of this scientific paper entitled "Legal Protection of Consumers Regarding the Distribution of Illegal Cosmetics Online given Law no. 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection" aims to find out generally and broadly about cosmetics, why illegal cosmetics can circulate online, the distribution of illegal cosmetics according to applicable law. We need to know what illegal cosmetics mean. Considering the large number of Indonesian women's interest in using beauty products, online business people are flocking to produce their products in various ways, including online marketing. However, on the other hand, due to tight business competition, online business actors act in bad faith by illegally marketing cosmetic products. Just like women, men also use cosmetic products to increase their self-confidence. Many factors cause consumers to use beauty products without knowing the consequences they will get. One of the factors is the need for more consumer education and knowledge regarding illegal cosmetics sold online and sold freely through online sites based on the provisions of the Consumer Protection Law. This research aims to examine and analyze the problem of legal violations for naughty business actors regarding the distribution of cosmetics. This research was carried out normatively, namely library legal research, which refers to consumer legislation. This research focuses on determining legal protection for consumers who use illegal cosmetics sold online. Cosmetics are produced to beautify a person's appearance. However, recently, many cosmetics sold online do not have a circular from BPOM, thus endangering consumers who buy beauty products online.

Cosmetic ingredients derived from Achillea millefolium function in cosmetics as skin-conditioning agents—miscellaneous, skin-conditioning agents—humectants, and fragrance ingredients. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (Panel) reviewed relevant animal and human data to determine their safety in cosmetics and raised concerns about cosmetics containing linalool, thujone, quercetin, hydroquinone, or α-peroxyachifolid. Because final product formulations may contain multiple botanicals, each containing similar constituents of concern, formulators are advised to be aware of these components and to avoid reaching levels that may be hazardous to consumers. Additionally, industry was advised to use good manufacturing practices to limit impurities. The Panel concluded that achillea millefolium extract, achillea millefolium flower extract, and achillea millefolium flower/leaf/stem extract are safe in the present practices of use and concentration in cosmetics when formulated to be nonsensitizing.

AbstractThe cosmetic industry grows rapidly in Indonesia. Supported by digital media, the cosmetic production, marketing and consumption reach society at large, especially female students. Excessive purchasing of cosmetics has either negative (being more consumptive) or positive (being an entrepreneurial pioneer) impacts. Researchers will explain the process and impact of the hegemony of beauty vlogger on students who use cosmetics at Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. We used Antonio Gramsci's hegemony theory. With qualitative approach, we collected data through interview, observation, documentation, and survey. We involved 30 students both ever watched beauty vlogs and used cosmetics. After testing the validity of the data through triangulation of sources and methods, data were analyzed into four stages run by Miles & Huberman version. The results showed that the beauty vlogger processes the hegemony of the viewers in several stages: increasing knowledge on the cosmetics and their use, building trust for gain sympathy from viewers, make intensive communication to strengthen closeness with viewers and create more positive representation of make-up and beauty. Moreover, many viewers got updates cosmetics and beauty data, financial benefits, inspiration and beauty creativity, and self-confidence. Few viewers spent more time, energy, thoughts and funds to explore the world of cosmetics and beauty. Keywords: Hegemony, Beauty Vlogger, Cosmetic user

Abstract Body wash cosmetics are among the most common groups of cosmetics used by consumers. Faced with strong competition in the marketplace, cosmetic manufacturers search for innovative solutions both in terms of product composition and form. An example of an innovative technology which can be used in the production of body wash cosmetics is the process of coacervation which yields a concentrated body wash product. Another important aspect which needs to be considered in the formulation of body wash cosmetics is their safety of use. It is crucial to ensure that such cosmetic products do not induce skin irritations. At present, the most widespread method of reducing the skin irritation potential of cosmetic products is the use of surfactant mixtures. The study is an attempt to evaluate the effect of using polyvinylpyrrolidone in the formulations of model body wash cosmetics in the coacervate form on the skin irritation potential and basic quality determinants of body wash products. Polyvinylpyrrolidone was found to contribute to a significant reduction in the irritant effect, and the skin irritation potential decreased in proportion to increasing molecular mass of the polymer. The application of polyvinylpyrrolidone with the different molecular weight also has an impact on improving the foaming properties of model body wash cosmetics and the stability of foam they produce.

Along with the times there is an increasing need from various fields including cosmetics. The use of cosmetics among the public is used to maintain healthy skin, beautify and maintain appearance. This increased demand for cosmetics has led to industrial competition so that there are many producers who take advantage of using a mixture of harmful substances in the manufacture of cosmetics. Mercury is a toxic cosmetic ingredient which has been widely circulating in the market. The impact of using mercury includes allergies, poisoning, and damage. The halalness of a product is an important thing in the life of a Muslim, the requirements for a cosmetics are said to be halal based on the origin of the constituent ingredients, processing and the process of obtaining them, while for cosmetic safety it is based on the function and impact it causes. The importance of monitoring halal cosmetic products is not only the role of the government, but also from the producers and consumers who are wise in the use and manufacture of cosmetics. Overcoming this problem is by making cosmetics from natural ingredients in the form of jackfruit leaf extract (Artocarpus hetetophyllus) as a substitute for the use of mercury by inhibiting the formation of tyrosine which produces melanin pigment which makes skin dark. This paper uses a maceration method in extracting young jackfruit leaves, then testing the phytochemicals on the leaf extract, which contains tyrosinase inhibitors which are classified as polyphenols. Furthermore, the preparation of cosmetic gel preparations was carried out, then the stability test was carried out including the organoleptic test, pH test, viscosity test, and homogeneity test to determine the reactivity of the prepared gel which could later be mass produced. The gel making with the active compound tyrosinase inhibitor from jackfruit leaves fulfills the requirements of halal cosmetics and thoyyib is shown by not using haram and dangerous substances through the action of a tyrosinase inhibitor in the form of acetocarpanone which has no side effect on the body because it is obtained from natural ingredients.

This review paper collects the recent updates regarding the use of nanomaterials in cosmetics. Special focus is given to the applications of nanomaterials in the cosmetic industry, their unique features, as well as the advantages of nanoscale ingredients compared to non-nanoscale products. The state-of-the-art practices for physicochemical and toxicological characterization of nanomaterials are also reviewed. Moreover, special focus is given to the current regulations and safety assessments that are currently in place regarding the use of nanomaterials in cosmetics—the new 2019 European guidance for the safety assessment of nanomaterials in cosmetics, together with the new proposed methodologies for the toxicity evaluation of nanomaterials. Concerns over health risks have limited the further incorporation of nanomaterials in cosmetics, and since new nanomaterials may be used in the future by the cosmetic industry, a detailed characterization and risk assessment are needed to fulfill the standard safety requirements.

Background. Nowadays, it is generally recognized that physical appearance is important, women are particularly interested in their aesthetic appearance and the use of various cosmetic products. The long-term usage habits of cosmetic products have influenced not only the condition of the skin and hair but also on human health. The aim of the survey was to investigate cosmetics use habits and related side effects among females. Methods: A quantitative survey was performed; an original questionnaire based on scientific resources was used, used data collection method - a written survey. Survey sample – 336 Lithuanian women. Data analysis was performed using the social research statistics program SPSS 25.0. Percentage frequencies were calculated for ordinal variables - averages and standard deviations. The Pearson’s Chi-Square test and the non-parametric Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney tests were used to detect statistically significant differences. The significance level selected was p <0.05. Results. The survey revealed the prevalence and frequency of the use of cosmetic products by women, as well as the choice criteria for selecting cosmetic products. The side effects related to the use of cosmetics experienced by women are investigated as well as some practices and habits regarding the use of cosmetics. Conclusions. The study shows that the choice criteria of cosmetic products differ among separate women age groups. The older women are more concerned about the composition of the products, their naturalness, and the manufacturer, while the price is less important. Most commonly used are personal hygiene products including deodorants and perfumers. The older women use less cosmetic products (p <0.05) than the younger ones. The majority of women have experienced side effects related to the use of cosmetics. The study shows that the occurrence of side effects does not depend on the number of products used. However, they are related to the use habits: women who experience side effects more often (p <0.05) use expired cosmetic products. In addition, women with side effects are less likely to use cosmetic testers.

This paper presents a comparative study of herbal and synthetic cosmetics available in the market. The term "cosmetics" refers to compounds used externally to enhance appearance. It looks aesthetic and has a pleasant fragrance, which improves one's beauty and self-confidence. Herbal cosmetics are created by mixing one or more herbal substances with other cosmetic elements to treat a variety of skin conditions. Herbal cosmetics are supposed to be all-natural and free of any potentially dangerous synthetic chemicals that could harm the skin. Natural cosmetics are safer to use than other cosmetics. In synthetic cosmetics, a chemical reaction is used to create a synthetic substance called a compound. The importance of herbal cosmetics lies in the herbs utilized in them and their benefits over synthetic alternatives.

Despite legal and safety issues, skin-lightening cosmetic products—including hazardous mercury-containing cosmetics—are in increasing demand in Indonesia. Perceptions of beauty may result in desires to have lighter skin tones, regardless of the safety of these cosmetics, which block the production of melanin and thus lighten skin tone. This study investigated Hg exposure of students using skin-lightening cosmetics and assessed the health issues. A total of 105 female students were given a questionnaire regarding their use of cosmetics; a further 43 students formed a non-cosmetic-user control group. Their scalp hair and cosmetic products were analyzed by particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) spectroscopy. The geometric-mean hair Hg concentration for the cosmetics-using students was 6.7 µg g−1—three times that of the control group (2.3 µg g−1). Of twenty-seven cosmetic samples were analyzed, twenty had Hg concentrations of 0.12–7834.4 µg g−1 (mean 554.6 µg g−1), and seven had no detectable Hg. The hair Hg concentrations exhibited a statistically significant correlation with cosmetic Hg concentration. The health assessments indicated only rigidity & ataxia and irregular eye movement were prevalent in the cosmetic-using students with less than 7% occurrences.

Owing to the rapid development of the cosmetic industry, cosmetic safety has become the focus of consumers’ attention. However, in order to achieve the desired effects in the short term, the illegal addition of hormones in cosmetics has emerged frequently, which could induce skin problems and even skin cancer after long-term use. Therefore, it is of great significance to master the illegal addition in cosmetics and effectively detect the hormones that may exist in cosmetics. In this review, we analyze the illegally added hormone types, detection values, and cosmetic types, as well as discuss the hormone risks in cosmetics for human beings, according to the data in unqualified cosmetics in China from 2017 to 2022. Results showed that although the frequency of adding hormones in cosmetics has declined, hormones are still the main prohibited substances in illegal cosmetics, especially facial masks. Because of the complex composition and the low concentration of hormones in cosmetics, it is necessary to combine efficient sample preparation technology with instrumental analysis. In order to give the readers a comprehensive overview of hormone analytical technologies in cosmetics, we summarize the advanced sample preparation techniques and commonly used detection techniques of hormones in cosmetics in the last decade (2012–2022). We found that ultrasound-assisted extraction, solid phase extraction, and microextraction coupled with chromatographic analysis are still the most widely used analytical technologies for hormones in cosmetics. Through the investigation of market status, the summary of sample pretreatment and detection technologies, as well as the discussion of their development trends in the future, our purpose is to provide a reference for the supervision of illegal hormone residues in cosmetics.

The article expresses the toxicological profile of micro plastics, heavy metals and active ingredients on cosmetics. The focus is on pollution hazards to the biosphere, humans and the environment. Animals easily absorb plastic particles, which not only spread throughout the food chain, but have also been shown to exist in humans. While the micro plastics in cosmetic bags themselves can leach toxins into the ocean, synergies between micro plastics and other pollutants can increase the toxicity of micro plastics to living things. Cosmetics are also harmful in the use of processing additives, polypropylene like absorb organic pollutants. There has been interest in the history of cosmetics for the last several decades. In part, this renewed curiosity is probably due to the revolutionizing natural movement in the cosmetic industry. In this article, we provide an overview of the historical aspects of the use of natural ingredients in cosmetics, which mostly come from botanical and mineral sources. We begin with an introduction to the art and science of cosmetics in the ancient world, which includes accounts of Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, and Roman cosmetics as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine. These dermatological and cosmetic practices, which were advanced for the time, paved the way for the current revolution of natural ingredients in cosmetic products. Without providing a comprehensive historical account, we surveyed selected cultures during different periods of time to provide some perspective of our current understanding of natural ingredients in cosmetics. Attention is also given to the rich contributions of body art by tribal societies to our knowledge base, especially in the areas of dyes and pigments. Finally, we offer some perspective of natural ingredient cosmetics in the Information Age.

Cosmetic and beauty products, though not essential for physical health, go a long way in providing mental well-being and confidence, and hence are used substantially. Increasing utilization of varying cosmetic products leads to a multitude of adverse effects. There is more awareness about cosmeceutics, cosmetic products and their adverse effects, and studies on the same are currently trending. Bibliometrics has become a prominent and growing field of research in recent years. The aim of this research was to assess bibliometric features and conduct systematic trend analysis on the literature available on cosmetics’ adverse effects. We analyzed all the published documents that included the keywords “cosmetics” and “adverse effects” between 1957 and 2021. We performed a detailed scientometric and bibliometric assessment in this field. A total of 4127 articles were retrieved from the databases provided by Scopus, which most were original articles. The United States ranked first and dominated the literature with 1292 (31.44%) documents followed by South Korea 7.47%. Harvard medical school was the most productive institution (1.16%). The study of the adverse effects of cosmetics should be supported and taken up by the researchers/authors from developing and underdeveloped countries.

This article analyzes consumer intentions to purchase cannabis-based skincare cosmetics by considering the role of human values, environmental awareness, and attitudes toward cannabis-based skincare cosmetics and their industrial use. The literature enabled the definition of a set of nine hypotheses, which were tested by a quantitative study with 230 participants from Portugal. Data were collected online in 2021 using snowball sampling. Structural equation modeling and mean difference tests were used for the hypothesis testing. The results suggest that personal values regarding openness to change and conservation indirectly influence the acceptance of cannabis-derived cosmetic products by reinforcing attitudes toward cannabis-based skincare cosmetics, and that environmental awareness influences the intention to purchase cannabis-based skincare cosmetics. This article provides relevant insights for both practitioners and researchers, as it demonstrates that both attitudes toward cannabis-based skincare cosmetics and the attitude toward the use of cannabis by the cosmetic industry predict purchase intentions of cannabis-based skin care cosmetics and therefore, should be considered for the development of the strategy for communicating with consumers. The article also makes some suggestions about the profiles of consumers most willing to buy this type of product, highlighting the role of environmental awareness and human values as strong determinants that influence the purchase intention of cannabis-based skincare cosmetics.

The use of cosmetics and body adornment in order to decorate and beautify oneself is an almost universal part of the human experience. This was also true of the ancient Palestinian culture that gave rise to the Hebrew Bible and early Jewish literature. Despite this, cosmetics and their function in the narratives in which they feature is an understudied subject within the academic scholarship of biblical literature. This article discusses the use of cosmetics in biblical and Jewish-Hellenistic texts, demonstrating that cosmetics were associated with immoral behavior and illicit sexual practices. Nevertheless, in the stories of Judith and Susanna, these characters apparently receive no such censure for applying cosmetic oil. By considering the use of cosmetics akin to a speech act, able to communicate something specific about one's social or sexual status, this article provides a new access to understanding these narratives and the characterisations of their female heroines.

Consumers' awareness of halal cosmetics is still low. The high level of dependence on a product and the lack of consumer knowledge of cosmetic ingredients makes it difficult for consumers to switch to cosmetic products that are halal certified. Minimal education that is easily accessible regarding the halalness of a cosmetic product among the community is a problem that results in the lack of awareness of halal. This study aims to obtain information about the effect of halal education on knowledge and attitudes in the use of cosmetics. The method used in this study is an experimental design with a sample size of 30 respondents who are active users of cosmetics both labeled halal and not labeled halal. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling. Data on the knowledge and halal attitudes of respondents before and after education were obtained from filling out questionnaires which were carried out online. The data analysis technique used was the Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test using SPSS 16. The results of the respondents' research indicated that there were significant differences in their knowledge and attitudes towards the use of cosmetics before and after halal education with p value ≤ 0.05.
