Objectives: Supraphysiologic forces placed on the glenohumeral joint during pitching leads to a high incidence of bicipital-labral pathology in competitive pitchers. Heavy debate in operative management between biceps tenodesis, labral repair, and debridement warrants further study in the role of the biceps during pitching. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the recruitment of the long and short heads of the biceps utilizing electromyographic evaluation and correlate activity with pitch velocity. Methods: Seventeen healthy, competitive, pitchers were recruited and consented to pitch in a controlled laboratory setting, under electromyographic observation. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was performed via electrodes placed on either head of the biceps, deltoid, infraspinatus, and latissimus dorsi, band pass filtered between 10-500 Hz and sampled at a rate of 1500 Hz during the pitching motion. sEMG was normalized to maximal volumetric isometric contraction (MVIC) via manual muscle testing (MMT). Pitch velocity was measured using a Speedster III radar gun, and then correlated to sEMG readings. Results: Average age of recruited subjects was 19.8 ± 1.4 years old. Average number of years pitched was 10.3 ± 3.6 years. Fourteen players reported their highest level of play was college, while two reported semi-professional, and one reported high-school. Average pitch velocity from included pitches was 70.6 ± 4.0 (range: 61 - 79). sEMG signals were interpreted in three modalities: median signal, integral sum of all signals, and time spent (ms) above 10% MVIC. Pitch velocity did not correlate to any sEMG analysis (p>0.05) by bivariate linear regression. Coefficient of variation was greater between pitchers than within pitchers. Greater than 80% of pitchers demonstrated statistically different activation of the long head of biceps muscle (LHBM) versus short head of biceps muscle (SHBM) (Figure 1). Three players had significantly greater short head activation, while 12 players had significantly greater long head activation. Conclusion: The long and short heads of the biceps are consistently activated during pitching, suggested they have a role during the late cocking and deceleration phase of pitching, although not correlated to ball acceleration. Preferential recruitment of either long or short head biceps suggest variability in fast ball pitching styles, that warrant further research for clinical implications. [Figure: see text]

Just in the view of evidence-based practise (EBP) it's used HONOS rating Scale, adopted since May 2012, by Mental Health Center of Villorba (Treviso-Italy) There are 3 package treatments: rehabilitative, territorial and clinical.ObjectivesTo identify which variables are positively correlated to HONOS improvement in patients group who frequented Mental Health Centre along 36 months. All patients present severe mental illness.AimsEvaluate the effectiveness of interventions and correlate to treatment package and individual feature. Analyze treatment process for quality improvement.MethodA psychiatric team (4 nurses, 1 psychiatrist) administered Honos Rating Scale along 3 years: on starting point and 6, 12 and 36 months later: T 0,1,2,3,4. Patients are also described by diagnosis, mental, social and autonomy skill, time, utilization of MHC and anagraphic information.ResultsAll 15 groups’ patients realize lower scoring, after 36 months’ treatment. Seven have got reliable improvement (i.e. = > 8-point lowering T3–T4) and positively correlate with: (1) 36 months’ treatment, at 12 months in rehabilitative Package; (2) days in residential/semi-residential community from 82 to 311 days. Related tables are included in paper.Discussion and conclusionHONOS score correlates directly with clinical and riabilitation improvement, i.e. mental, social capacity, and personal autonomy. 8015 Background: The non-classical alkylators DTIC and TMZ exert their cytotoxic effect through methylation of DNA bases. DNA damage is repaired by direct reversal of the O6-MeG lesion by the protein O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT/AGT); recognition of alkylation-damage-induced replication errors by the MMR pathway and excision repair of alkylated bases (N7-MeG and N3-MeA) conducted by the BER pathway. We report the results of a study evaluating the correlation between MGMT, MMR and BER protein expression in tumor tissue of patients (pts) with metastatic melanoma and documented clinical response to chemotherapy. Methods: Frozen tumor tissue was obtained from 17 pts with metastatic melanoma treated with DTIC/TMZ. Tumors were classified as sensitive (S) if pts showed stable disease (SD), partial response (PR) or complete response (CR) by RECIST criteria; and resistant (R) if progressive disease (PD) was observed after 2 cycles of treatment with DTIC/TMZ. Immunohistochemical staining for MGMT, MLH1 (MMR), and DNA polymerase-ß (pol-ß, BER) was performed. Levels of expression were assessed by a pathologist blinded to response data. Fisher’s Exact and Wilcoxon Rank Sum statistical tests were used to assess correlations. Results: 9 tumors were considered to be sensitive (S) and 7 resistant (R). Clinical response was found to significantly correlate with functional MMR (increased MLH1 expression): 7 of 9 S tumors had high MLH1 expression as compared to 1 of 7 R (p-value=0.015). Clinical response was also found to be inversely correlated with pol-ß expression: 6 of 9 S tumors expressed low levels of pol-ß as compared to 1 of 7 R tumors (p-value=0.08). MGMT expression did not seem to correlate with response. Conclusions: The presence of a functional MMR pathway is a requirement for the cytotoxic effect of alkylating agents and was significantly correlated with clinical response. Decreased BER potential (pol-ß expression) was correlated with increased sensitivity to alkylator-based chemotherapy. These findings lend additional support to the view that DNA repair status correlates with response to alkylator-based chemotherapy for melanoma. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Resumo: Sintomas depressivos estão associados a sérios comprometimentos no desenvolvimento cognitivo, escolar, emocional, familiar e social. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar variáveis cognitivas e psicossociais de crianças com e sem sintomas de depressão. A amostra foi composta por 157 alunos de 3ª e 4ª séries do ensino fundamental, de uma escola pública de Campinas. A partir dessa amostra maior foram selecionadas 54 crianças, tendo em vista seus resultados no Inventário de Depressão Infantil, sendo 27 com sintomas depressivos (G1) e 27 sem sintomatologia (G2). As crianças dos dois grupos eram comparáveis quanto ao sexo, a idade (8 a 11 anos) e a série escolar (3ª e 4ª). Após a identificação dos participantes com e sem sintomas, os grupos foram comparados no que concerne às estratégias de aprendizagem, crenças de auto-eficácia, autoconceito e autoregulação emocional. Os resultados revelaram que as crianças com sintomas apresentam autoconceito negativo e baixa auto-eficácia. Tanto o G1 como o G2 reportou o uso de estratégias de aprendizagem cognitivas e metacognitivas, no entanto, os participantes do G1, mencionaram, em algumas situações, menor uso de estratégias metacognitivas e parecem ter mais dificuldades de manter a atenção e de se automotivarem. Em linhas gerais, os dois grupos relataram usar estratégias semelhantes para lidar com as diferentes emoções. No entanto, foi interessante notar que o fato dos alunos do G1 sentirem mais freqüentemente tristeza e raiva, não garantiu que esses participantes apresentassem maior sucesso na percepção de emoções, já que foi G1 o que teve mais dificuldade na percepção da tristeza, do medo e da alegria. É recomendável que novos estudos a respeito da conscientização e percepção das emoções e o uso de estratégias de regulação afetiva de crianças com sintomatologia depressiva sejam realizados.Destaca-se também a necessidade da promoção do desenvolvimento metacognitivo e da aprendizagem auto-regulada, desde as séries iniciais. Sugere-se ainda que futuras pesquisas dessa natureza sejam conduzidas com a finalidade de se enriquecer os dados obtidos na presente tese.
Abstract: Depressive symptoms are associated to severe damages on the cognitive, emotional, study, family and social development. The present study aims at the investigation of the cognitive and psychosocial variables in children with and without depressive symptoms. The sample was composed by 157 third and fourth grade students of elementary school, from a public school in the city of Campinas. Fifty-five children from this larger sample have been selected considering their scores on the Children's Depression Inventory. Twenty-seven of them displayed depressive symptoms (G1) and the other 27 did not present symptoms (G2). The children of both groups were comparable in gender, age (8-11 years-old) and school grade (third and fourth grades). Subsequently to the selection of the participants with and without symptoms, the groups were compared in relation to their learning strategies, their beliefs of self-efficacy, self-concept and emotional self-regulation. Results demonstrate that children with depressive symptoms display negative self-esteem and low self-efficacy. Both G1 and G2 adopted cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies, however, G1 have displayed, in some situations, less usage of metacognitive strategies and seemed to face more difficulties to maintain concentration and be self-motivated. Even though both groups generally employ the same strategies to deal with different emotions, it was remarkable to notice that the fact that the students from G1 experience the feelings of sadness and anger more frequently than G2 did not guarantee their success in perceiving feelings, once G1 faced more difficulties in the perception of sadness, fear and happiness. It is recommended that future research on the perception and awareness of emotions as well as on the use of affective regulation strategies by children with depressive symptoms be carried out. The importance of promoting the metacognitive development and the selfregulated learning since the earlier grades in school is also highlighted. It is suggested that future research of this nature be made with the purpose of enriching the information obtained in the present work.

Resumo: Este trabalho desenvolveu um protótipo de um correlacionador de sinais aplicados a vazamento em tubulações de água aterrada. Para tal foi analisado o SoC Zynq, utilizando a placa Minized juntamente com um conversor analógico-digital, Pmod AD1, um módulo GPS, Pmod GPS, um clock em tempo real, Pmod RTCC e um modulo acelerômetro Pmod NAV. Nesta análise foram utilizados modelos criados no software Xilinx Vivado, baseados em Intellectual Property blocks, e o software Xilinx SDK. A partir dos modelos desenvolvidos foram realizados testes com o propósito de validar o sincronismo entre as placas. Inicialmente testou-se um modelo simples apenas utilizando a placa e o módulo Pmod AD1, sendo o teste realizado para verificar a resolução do relógio da placa Minized. Em seguida foi feito o experimento com a placa Minized e o Pmod RTCC visando o sincronismo entre as placas. Os testes de sincronismo foram finalizados utilizando-se o conjunto Minized, Pmod RTCC e Pmod GPS, que obteve bons resultados. Para a finalização da análise da correlação de sinais verificou-se a utilização do Pmod NAV para a aquisição de dados com testes em bancada, apresentando resultados experimentais satisfatórios.
Abstract: This work developed a prototype of a signal correlator applied to leakage in buried water pipes. The Zynq SoC was analyzed using the Minized board together with an analog-to-digital converter, Pmod AD1, a module GPS, Pmod GPS, a real-time clock, Pmod RTCC and a Pmod NAV accelerometer module. For this analysis we used models created in the Xilinx Vivado software, based on Intellectual Property blocks, and the Xilinx SDK software. From the developed models tests were carried out in order to validate the synchronism between the boards. Initially, a simple model was tested using only the board and the module Pmod AD1, and the test was performed to verify the resolution of the Minized board's clock. Then the experiment was performed using the Minized board and the Pmod RTCC aiming the synchronism between the boards. In order to finalize the synchronization tests, we used the Minized set, Pmod RTCC and Pmod GPS, which presented good results. For the conclusion of the analysis of the correlation of signals, the use of the Pmod NAV for the data acquisition was verified and then benchmarked, presenting satisfactory experimental results.

Les oxydes fortement corrélés sont largement étudiés pour l'hôte d'applications uniques, telles que la supraconductivité à haute température, la magnéto-résistance colossale, les commandes exotiques magnétiques, chargées et orbitales et les transitions isolant-métal. Les oxydes métalliques de transition qui forment la majorité des systèmes d'oxydes corrélés et des oxydes de vanadium, en particulier VO2 et V2O5, sont les deux systèmes les plus préférés parmi les chercheurs pour plusieurs applications. Dans cette thèse, la croissance et la caractérisation de VO2 et V2O5 sont discutées avec un accent particulier sur la propriété optique, en particulier les propriétés thermochromiques. Traditionnellement, le comportement SMT et l'infrarouge reflètent la zone de focalisation pour la recherche VO2 et c'est seulement jusqu'à récemment que la VO2 est traitée comme un système beaucoup plus complexe et a été étudiée comme un métamatériel naturellement désordonné très réactif près de la température de transition de phase où le matériau présente des matériaux semi-conducteurs et métalliques Coexistence de phase. Étant donné que chaque phase de VO2 a des propriétés optiques et électriques distinctes, elle contrôle l'étendue des transitions de phase par une modulation de température précise, permet d'exploiter le matériau pour de nouvelles propriétés, comme la modulation d'émissivité dans la région NIR et pour la création de motifs IR réversibles et réinscriptibles. Le V2O5 est traditionnellement considéré comme un matériau TCR élevé et considéré comme un matériau de choix pour une application allant de la catalyse, des capteurs de gaz aux batteries au lithium. Dans cette étude, nous nous concentrons sur les propriétés optiques du matériau, en particulier la nature thermochromique de la gamme visible des revêtements V2O5 synthétisés par recuit oxydatif des revêtements VOx développés par MOCVD. L'impact du dopage et de la production sélective de vacance d'oxygène sur la propriété thermochromique est discuté
Strongly correlated oxides are studied widely for the host of unique applications, such as hightemperature superconductivity, colossal magneto resistance, exotic magnetic, charge and orbital ordering, and insulator-to-metal transitions. Transitional metal oxides which form the majority of the correlated oxide systems and oxides of Vanadium, especially VO2 and V2O5 are the two most favourite systems among researchers for several applications. In this thesis, the growth and characterization of VO2 and V2O5 are discussed along with a special focus on the optical property, especially thermochromic properties. Traditionally SMT behaviour and Infrared reflectively was the focus area for VO2 research, and its only until recently that VO2 is being treated as a much more complex system and investigated as highly responsive naturally disordered metamaterial near the phase transition temperature where the material exhibits semiconducting and metallic phase co-existence. Since each phase of VO2 has a distinct optical and electrical properties, controlling the extent of phase transitions by accurate temperature modulation, enables exploitation of the material for new properties like emissivity modulation in the NIR region and for creating IR visible reversible and rewritable patterns. V2O5 is traditionally seen as a high TCR material and regarded as material of choice for application ranging from catalysis, gas sensors to lithium batteries. In this study, however we focus on the optical properties of the material, especially the visible range thermochromic nature of V2O5 coatings synthesised by oxidative annealing of MOCVD grown VOx coatings. The impact of doping and selective oxygen vacancy generation on the thermochromic property are discussed

Objective: investigating the perceptual, acoustic and physiological vocal quality of a group of asthmatic individuals with paradoxical vocal fold dysfunction (PVFD) in relation to a group of asthmatic individuals without PVFD and a group of individuals without breathing problems. Methods: recording of acoustic and electroglottographic speech data from 9 individuals with PVFD, 8 with asthma without PVFD and 8 without breathing problems (control group). The perceptual analysis was carried out by means of the phonetic vocal quality analysis protocol. The acoustic analysis comprised both long and short term spectra. The Lx wave of the electroglottographic signals were analyzed and measures relative to the phases of the glottal cycle were extracted. Results: Both PVFD and asthma groups presented supralaryngeal settings characterized by smaller extension and higher constriction of the vocal tract. Laryngeal settings of both PVFD and asthma groups were found to be characterized by hyperfunction, creaky voice, rough voice, breathy voice, sonority breaks, diplophonia and instability, with higher frequency of occurrence of rough voice and breathy voice adjustments and short term instability events in the asthma group. The analysis of the long term spectrum declination lines made it possible to differentiate among the groups and genders: higher degree of spectral intensity was found in the feminine asthma and the masculine control groups and higher degree of spectral intensity in the PVFD group, differentiation also brought out by intensity measures of short and long term spectra. The inspection of the Lx wave revealed the asthma and PVFD groups differed from the control group due to the presence of noise, low intensity and prolonged closed phases. The electroglottographic measures related to speed index and contact coefficient area differentiated the asthma and PVFD groups. Conclusions: the analysis of the data corroborates the hypothesis of the presence of vocal alteration in patients with PVFD and in patients with asthma and favors the description of vocal quality as a diagnosis method, delineating the important demand of speech therapy treatment for these patients
Objetivo: investigar a qualidade vocal de um grupo de indivíduos com disfunção paradoxal de pregas vocais (DPPV) com asma em relação a um grupo de indivíduos asmáticos sem DPPV e a um grupo de indivíduos sem problemas respiratórios, segundo aspectos fonéticos (perceptivo-auditivos, acústicos e fisiológicos). Métodos: gravação de amostras de fala dos sinais acústico e eletroglotográfico de 9 indivíduos com DPPV, 8 com asma sem DPPV e 8 sem problemas respiratórios (grupo controle). O sinal acústico foi analisado do ponto de vista perceptivo-auditivo com roteiro de descrição da qualidade vocal com motivação fonética. As modalidades de análise acústica utilizadas foram os espectros de longo e curto termo. O sinal eletroglotográfico foi analisado a partir da filtragem dos registros, da inspeção da onda Lx e da extração de medidas que refletem as fases do ciclo glótico. Resultados: foram identificados, nos grupos DPPV e asma, ajustes supralaríngeos caracterizados por menor extensão e maior constrição do trato vocal. Os ajustes laríngeos indicaram hiperfunção, voz crepitante, voz áspera, escape de ar, quebras de sonoridade, diplofonia e instabilidade nos grupos DPPV e asma com maior ocorrência de ajuste de voz áspera, escape de ar e ocorrência de curto termo de instabilidade no grupo asma. Na análise acústica de longo termo houve diferenciação entre os grupos e gêneros com maior declínio espectral no grupo asma feminino e controle masculino e maior intensidade espectral no grupo DPPV, diferenciação marcada também pelas medidas espectrais de curto e longo termo. Em termos fisiológicos, na inspeção da onda Lx os grupos asma e DPPV aproximaram-se e diferenciam-se do grupo controle porque apresentaram ruído, baixa intensidade e fase fechada alongada. As medidas eletroglotográficas índice de velocidade e área do coeficiente de contato diferenciaram os grupos asma e DPPV. Conclusões: a análise dos dados contempla a hipótese de alteração vocal em pacientes com DPPV e em pacientes com asma e possibilita a descrição da qualidade vocal como um método de diagnóstico, apontando para a importante demanda de tratamento fonoaudiológico junto a estes pacientes

Em uma detalhada revisão nós obtemos a lei do semi-círculo para a densidade de estados no ensemble gaussiano de Wigner. Também falamos sobre a analogia eletrostática de Dyson, enxergando os autovalores como cargas que se repelem no círculo unitário, mostrando que nesse caso a densidade de estados é uniforme. Em um contexto mais geral nós obtemos a lei do semicírculo, provando o teorema de Glivenko-Cantelli para variáveis fortemente correlacionadas usando um método combinatorial de contagem de trajetos, o que nos dá subsídios para falar em estabilidade da lei do semi-círculo. Também, nesta dissertação nós estudamos as funções de correlação nos ensembles gaussiano e circular, mostrando que sob um adequado reescalamento elas são idênticas. Outros ensembles nesta dissertação foram investigados usando o Método de Gram para o caso em que os autovalores são limitados em um intervalo. Computamos a densidade de estados para cada um desses ensembles. Mais precisamente no ensemble de Chebychev, os resultados foram obtidos analiticamente e nesse ensemble além da densidade de estados, também traçamos grá…cos da função de correlação truncada.
In a detailed review we obtain a semi-circle law for the density of states in theWigner’s Gaussian Ensemble. Also we talk about Dyson’s Analogy, seeing the eigenvalues like charges that repulse themselves in the unitary circle, showing that this case the density of states is uniform. In a more general context we obtain the semi-circle law, proving the Glivenko-Cantelli Theorem to strongly correlated variables, using a combinatorial method of Paths' Counting. Thus we are showing the stability of the semi-circle Law. Also, in this dissertation we study the correlation functions in the Gaussian and Circular ensembles showing that using the Gram's Method in the case that eigenvalues are limited in a interval. In these ensembles we computed the density of states. More precisely, in a Chebychev ensemble the results were obtained analytically. In this ensemble, we also obtain graphics of the truncated correlation function.

This article focuses on correlated electron transport in molecular junctions. More specifically, it considers how electronic correlation effects can be included in transport calculations using many-body perturbation theory within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism. The article uses the GW self-energy method (G denotes the Green’s function and W is the screened interaction) which has been successfully applied to describe quasi-particle excitations in periodic solids. It begins by formulating the quantum-transport problem and introducing the non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism. It then derives an expression for the current within the NEGF formalism that holds for interactions in the central region. It also combines the GW scheme with a Wannier function basis set to study electron transport through two prototypical junctions: a benzene molecule coupled to featureless leads and a hydrogen molecule between two semi-infinite platinum chains. The results are analyzed using a generic two-level model of a molecular junction.

While interest in synesthesia among cognitive scientists has been steadily increasing in recent years, one question remains relatively unexplored: what is the relationship between synesthesia and consciousness? In this chapter, we consider some central aspects of this relationship and focus our discussion on two main questions. First, we explore the question of whether synesthesia can occur unconsciously. We identify some complications that arise in interpreting some of the relevant empirical results, and then endorse an affirmative answer to this question based on the limited findings available. Second, we look at four major theories of consciousness and evaluate their predictions regarding the neural correlates of consciousness using synesthesia as a test case. We highlight the ways in which findings concerning the neural correlates of synesthetic experience would seem to offer support for or against these major theories.

OCD symptoms often seem to correlate with hormonal changes. For example, onset during puberty or in the postpartum period is common, and some female patients report monthly fluctuations in their symptoms. This chapter reviews available evidence about the interaction between the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, and the neuropeptide oxytocin, and the initiation, amelioration, or exacerbation of OCD symptoms. Human studies as well as animal studies are reviewed. Furthermore, suggestions for clinical practice are provided, including: patient education, screening and treatment of perinatal OCD, cognitive behavioral therapy, and pharmacotherapy. The chapter concludes with suggestions on future research into the onset and exacerbation of OCD in women relative to reproductive cycle events.

This chapter examines the phonological correlates of information structural focus in the metrical grid and in the prosodic hierarchy, with emphasis on how they cooperate to express focus in simple cases but seem to conflict in more complex cases. Two Germanic languages, English and Swedish, are compared to highlight the implications of so-called nested foci and Second Occurrence Focus (SOF) with respect to how the metrical grid and the prosodic hierarchy interact in phonology. After providing an overview of metrical grid and prosodic hierarchy, a short description of Swedish intonation is given. The chapter then considers nested foci and SOF. It offers some predictions for Swedish of the constraint STRESSFOCUS, which does not specify what the correlation between metrical grid marks and heads of the prosodic hierarchy should be in the case of focus. It suggests that focus is expressed in a more categorical fashion in Swedish than in English.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection epidemic has particularly affected the poorest regions of the world. HIV can directly or indirectly affect different aspects of renal function, and results in a variable expression of kidney disease.Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in approximately 20% of hospitalized patients. The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) amongst HIV-infected patients is reported at 3.5–38% in different regions of the world. The complex interplay between the pheno- and/or genotypic variants of the virus, the genetic make-up of the host, and environmental factors determine the clinical manifestations of renal disease. The association of APOL1 gene variants G1 and G2 with the risk of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis explains the high frequency of HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) in populations of black ethnicity.Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) is effective in preventing progression of HIVAN. Some of the drugs used in ART regimens are potentially nephrotoxic and require dose adjustment or even avoidance in CKD. Progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in HIVAN has been reported to correlate with the extent of chronic damage quantified by renal biopsy.HIV-infected patients requiring dialysis, who are stable on ART, are achieving survival rates comparable to those of non-HIV dialysis populations. Similarly, HIV infection does not seem to adversely affect patient and graft survival rates after kidney transplantation, and there has been no increase in the prevalence of opportunistic infections in transplant recipients on effective ART.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease with various clinical manifestations. The hallmark of SLE is the presence of antibodies against nuclear constituents, such as double-stranded (ds)DNA, histones, and nucleosomes. Local deposition of antinuclear antibodies in complex with nuclear autoantigens induces serious inflammatory conditions that can affect several tissues and organs, including the kidney.The levels of antinucleosome and anti-dsDNA antibodies seem to correlate with glomerulonephritis and these autoantibodies can often be detected years before the patient is diagnosed with SLE. Apoptotic debris is present in the extracellular matrix and circulation of patients with SLE due to an aberrant process of apoptosis and/or insufficient clearance of apoptotic cells and apoptotic debris. The non-cleared apoptotic debris in patients with SLE may lead to activation of both the innate (myeloid and plasmacytoid dendritic cells) and adaptive (T and B cells) immune system. In addition to the activation by apoptotic debris and immune complexes, the immune system in SLE may be deregulated at the level of (a) presentation of self-peptides by antigen-presenting cells, (b) selection processes for both B and T cells, and (c) regulatory processes of B- and T-cell responses. Lupus nephritis may be classified in different classes based on histological findings in renal biopsies. The chromatin-containing immune complexes deposit in the capillary filter, most likely due to the interaction of chromatin with the polysaccharide heparan sulphate. A decreased renal expression of the endonuclease DNaseI further contributes to the glomerular persistence of chromatin and the development of glomerulonephritis.Current treatment of lupus nephritis is not specific and aims to reduce the inflammatory response with general immunosuppressive therapies. However, research has revealed novel potential therapeutic candidates at the level of dendritic cells, B cells, and T cells.

We analyze a 2400-year rainfall reconstruction from an ultra-high-resolution absolutely-dated stalagmite (JX-6) from southwestern Mexico (Lachniet et al., 2012). Oxygen isotope variations correlate strongly to rainfall amount in the Mexico City area since 1870 CE, and for the wider southwestern Mexico region since 1948, allowing us to quantitatively reconstruct rainfall variability for the Basin of Mexico and Sierra Madre del Sur for the past 2400 years. Because oxygen isotopes integrate rainfall variations over broad geographic regions, our data suggest substantial variations in Mesoamerican monsoon strength over the past two millennia. As a result of low age uncertainties (≤ 11 yr), our stalagmite paleoclimate reconstruction allows us to place robust ages on past rainfall variations with a resolution an order of magnitude more precise than archeological dates associated with societal change. We relate our new rainfall reconstruction to the sequence of events at Teotihuacan (Millon, 1967; Cowgill, 2015a) and to other pre-Colombian civilizations in Mesoamerica. We observe a centuries long drying trend that culminated in peak drought conditions in ca. 750 CE related to a weakening monsoon, which may have been a stressor on Mesoamerican societies. Teotihuacan is an ideal location to test for links between climate change and society, because it was located in a semi-arid highland valley with limited permanent water sources, which relied upon spring fed irrigation to ensure a reliable maize harvest (Sanders, 1977). The city of Teotihuacan was one of the largest Mesoamerican cities, which apparently reached population sizes of 80,000 to 100,000 inhabitants by AD 300 (Cowgill, 1997; 2015a). Following the “Great Fire”, which dates approximately to AD 550, population decreased to lower levels and many buildings were abandoned (Cowgill, 2015). Because of the apparent reliance on rainwater capture (Linn é, 2003) and spring-fed agriculture in the Teotihuacan valley to ensure food security and drinking water, food production and domestic water supplies should have been sensitive to rainfall variations that recharge the surficial aquifer that sustained spring discharge prior recent groundwater extraction.

AbstractGreen building technologies and design-correlated choices may significantly contribute to supporting the transition toward net energy flows in the built environment. Nevertheless, large discrepancies are underlined between standard simulated and monitored building behaviours requiring approaches able to simply correlate real building behaviours and simulated ones to further support coherent certification and/or optimization. The paper focusses on the application of a semi-automatic methodology to compare and evaluate thermal behaviours of buildings considering monitored and simulated data. The approach is based on a new Python tool developed by the authors, able to manage EnergyPlus inputs and perform multi-source KPIs calculations. The mentioned tool is used here to support semi-automatic model verifications of real weather data by optimizing model parameters to fit monitored behaviours. The approach is applied in this chapter to two demo buildings, a municipality school and a residential unit, located in the Turin metropolitan area of Piedmont, in Northwest Italy.

Abstract Bladed-disks in turbo-machines experience high cycle fatigue failures due to high vibration amplitudes. Therefore, it is important to accurately predict their dynamic characteristics including the mechanical joints at blade-disk (root joint) or blade-blade (shroud) interfaces. These joints help in dampening the vibration amplitudes. Before the experimental identification of these joints, it is of paramount importance to accurately measure the interface degrees-of-freedom (DoF). However, they are largely inaccessible for the measurements. For this reason, expansion techniques are used in order to update the single components before their coupling. But the expansion can be affected adversely if the measurements are not properly correlated with the updated model or if they have significant errors. Therefore, a frequency domain expansion method called System Equivalent Model Mixing (SEMM) is used to expand a limited set of measurements to a larger set of numerical DoF. Different measured models — termed the overlay models — are taken from an impact testing campaign of a blade and a disk and coupled to the numerical model according to the SEMM. The expanded models — termed the hybrid models — are then correlated with the validation channels in a round-robin way by means of Frequency Response Assurance Criteria (FRAC). The global correlations depict whether or not a measurement and the respective expansion is properly correlated. By this approach, the least correlated channels can be done away with from the measurements to have a better updated hybrid model. The method is tested on both the structures (the blade and the disk) and it is successfully shown that removing the uncorrelated channels does improve the quality of the hybrid models.

We describe the video-rate operation of a compact (30 × 30 × 10 cm) joint transform optical image correlator using two cw diode lasers and a semi-insulating GaAs/AlGaAs multiple-quantum-well photorefractive device as the erasable holographic element. The video images of the objects to be correlated are introduced to the system through a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) containing 320 × 220 pixels, and the resultant correlation is read out with a CCD camera. With only 1 mW incident write power at 830 nm, the response time of the photorefractive device is sub-microsecond, presenting the possibility of more than 106 correlations per second in a compact system. Furthermore, the small interaction length of the multiple-quantum-well device (2 μm) removes the spatial-bandwidth limitations of correlators based on thick photorefractive materials operating in the Bragg regime. We will discuss the performance of this system for pattern and character recognition.

Incomplete view information often results in failure cases of the conventional multi-view methods. To address this problem, we propose a Deep Correlated Predictive Subspace Learning (DCPSL) method for incomplete multi-view semi-supervised classification. Specifically, we integrate semi-supervised deep matrix factorization, correlated subspace learning, and multi-view label prediction into a unified framework to jointly learn the deep correlated predictive subspace and multi-view shared and private label predictors. DCPSL is able to learn proper subspace representation that is suitable for class label prediction, which can further improve the performance of classification. Extensive experimental results on various practical datasets demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods.

This paper presents a Truss Semisubmersible (Truss Semi) design optimized to meet the post-Katrina Gulf of Mexico (GoM) environment criteria, with global performance correlated in 1:50 scale model tests in a wave basin. A conventional semisubmersible with a ring pontoon is facilitated with heave plates supported by the truss structure to increase heave natural period. The size of the semisubmersible hull and the configuration of the heave plates are optimized through frequency domain analysis to minimize the vertical motion enough to allow the dry trees to accommodate top tensioned production risers. The system includes eight production top tension risers (TTRs) connected to the production deck and a single drilling riser connected to the drilling deck. All of the TTRs are connected through the hydro-pneumatic tensioner system. One gas export and one oil export steel catenary riser (SCR) export the oil and gas to the storage facility. Structures designed for this deepwater area (4,300 ft) of the central Gulf of Mexico (GoM) must be designed to meet newly proposed environmental criteria [1]. The optimized Truss Semi was tested in the Offshore Technology Research Center (OTRC) model basin, to confirm the global performance, such as motion, air gap and loads on the heave plates. The numerical predictions correlate well with the model test results.

Flash sintering is an electrical field-assisted densification technique that requires passing a current through a ceramic powder compact. Pressure-assisted flash sintering of commercially available Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) powders has been demonstrated. Near fully dense samples can be obtained within a short period of time. The influences of parameters such as electrical field strength, voltage ramping rate, current limit, external pressure, pre-heating, and holding time on the onset of the flash event were investigated. Some post-flash sintered samples were subjected to the same condition to observe if the material would experience repeated flash. In addition, material properties such as density and hardness were measured and correlated with SEM and XRD. Implications of the observations on underlying flash sintering mechanism will also be discussed.

Objectives (a) Identification and characterization of the cotton fiber FRKs; (b) Generating transgenic cotton plants overproducing either substrate inhibited tomato FRK or tomato FRK without substrate inhibition; (c) Generating transgenic cotton plants with RNAi suppression of fiber expressed FRKs; (d) Generating Arabidopsis plants that over express FRK1, FRK2, or both genes, as additional means to assess the contribution of FRK to cellulose synthesis and biomass production. b. Background to the topic: Cellulose synthesis and fiber elongation are dependent on sugar metabolism. Previous results suggested that FRKs (fructokinase enzymes that specifically phosphorylate fructose) are major players in sugar metabolism and cellulose synthesis. We therefore hypothesized that increasing fructose phosphorylation may enhance fiber elongation and cellulose synthesis in cotton plants. Accordinlgy, the objectives of this research were: c. Major conclusions and achievements: Two cotton FRKs expressed in fibers, GhFRK2 and GhFRK3, were cloned and characterized. We found that GhFRK2 enzyme is located in the cytosol and GhFRK3 is located within plastids. Both enzymes enable growth on fructose (but not on glucose) of hexose kinase deficient yeast strain, confirming the fructokinase activity of the cloned genes. RNAi constructs with each gene were prepared and sent to the US collaborator to generate cotton plants with RNAi suppression of these genes. To examine the effect of FRKs using Arabidopsis plants we generated transgenic plants expressing either LeFRK1 or LeFRK2 at high level. No visible phenotype has been observed. Yet, plants expressing both genes simultaneously are being created and will be tested. To test our hypothesis that increasing fructose phosphorylation may enhance fiber cellulose synthesis, we generated twenty independent transgenic cotton plant lines overexpressing Lycopersicon (Le) FRK1. Transgene expression was high in leaves and moderate in developing fiber, but enhanced FRK activity in fibers was inconsistent between experiments. Some lines exhibited a 9-11% enhancement of fiber length or strength, but only one line tested had consistent improvement in fiber strength that correlated with elevated FRK activity in the fibers. However, in one experiment, seed cotton mass was improved in all transgenic lines and correlated with enhanced FRK activity in fibers. When greenhouse plants were subjected to severe drought during flowering and boll development, no genotypic differences in fiber quality were noted. Seed cotton mass was improved for two transgenic lines but did not correlate with fiber FRK activity. We conclude that LeFRK1 over-expression in fibers has only a small effect on fiber quality, and any positive effects depend on optimum conditions. The improvement in productivity for greenhouse plants may have been due to better structural development of the water-conducting tissue (xylem) of the stem, since stem diameters were larger for some lines and the activity of FRK in the outer xylem greater than observed for wild-type plants. We are testing this idea and developing other transgenic cotton plants to understand the roles of FRK in fiber and xylem development. We see the potential to develop a cotton plant with improved stem strength and productivity under drought for windy, semi-arid regions where cotton is grown. d. Implications, scientific and agricultural: FRKs are probably bottle neck enzymes for biomass and wood synthesis and their increased expression has the potential to enhance wood and biomass production, not only in cotton plants but also in other feed and energy renewable plants.

Following preliminary observations by one of the collaborating scientists on this project and the completion of a 1-year, BARD-supported feasibility study (IS-1908-90F), this 3-year BARD project has been executed. The main objectives of the research were to elucidate biochemical and pathological aspects of UV-induced resistance in fruits and vegetables, to characterize physical and biological variables of induced resistance and delay of ripening, and to explore the application of the treatment as a control practice of postharvest diseases and shelf-life extension of fruits and vegetables. Our findings, which are detailed in numerous joint publications, have shown that the effect of UV-C light on induction of resistance and delay of ripening is a general one and of wide oddurrence. Apart from surface sterilization of the commodity, the reduction of decay of different fungi has been associated with and induced resistance phenomenon which gradually builds up within 24 to 48 hours after the UV treatment and can be reversed by visible light. In citrus, induced resistance has been associated with increased activity of the enzymes phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and peroxidase, and with the levels of endglucanase and chitinase. In tomato, resistance was correlated with the production of high levels of tomatine. Our study of some molecular aspects of the induced resistance in grapefruit has revealed the induction of a cDNA which represents a gene encoding for an isoflavone reductase-like protein that, in legumes, has been associated with phytoalexin biosynthesis. This gene was cloned and sequenced. Delay of ripening was associated in tomato with inhibition of ethylene production, carotenoid synthesis, and chlorophyll degradation and with the presence of high levels of polyamines. In peach fruit epiphytic populations of a yeast increased following the UV treatment. Pilot-size treatment and packing lines were constructed in the US and Israel to test the application of the UV treatment on a semi-commercial scale. Although effective in reduction of decay and delay of ripening, a number of problems will have to be addressed before practical application of this methodology can be realized. The main issues are associated with the temporal and variable response to the treatment, and its relationship to the maturity and date of harvest of the commodity.

To elucidate the role of ROS in the tri-trophic interactions in postharvest biocontrol systems a detailed molecular and biochemical investigation was undertaken. The application of the yeast biocontrol agent Metschnikowia fructicola, microarray analysis was performed on grapefruit surface wounds using an Affymetrix Citrus GeneChip. the data indicated that 1007 putative unigenes showed significant expression changes following wounding and yeast application relative to wounded controls. The expression of the genes encoding Respiratory burst oxidase (Rbo), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK), G-proteins, chitinase (CHI), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS) and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL). In contrast, three genes, peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), were down-regulated in grapefruit peel tissue treated with yeast cells. The yeast antagonists, Metschnikowia fructicola (strain 277) and Candida oleophila (strain 182) generate relatively high levels of super oxide anion (O2−) following its interaction with wounded fruit surface. Using laser scanning confocal microscopy we observed that the application of M. fructicola and C. oleophila into citrus and apple fruit wounds correlated with an increase in H2O2 accumulation in host tissue. The present data, together with our earlier discovery of the importance of H₂O₂ production in the defense response of citrus flavedo to postharvest pathogens, indicate that the yeast-induced oxidative response in fruit exocarp may be associated with the ability of specific yeast species to serve as biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases. Effect of ROS on yeast cells was also studied. Pretreatment of the yeast, Candida oleophila, with 5 mM H₂O₂ for 30 min (sublethal) increased yeast tolerance to subsequent lethal levels of oxidative stress (50 mM H₂O₂), high temperature (40 °C), and low pH (pH 4). Suppression subtractive hybridization analysis was used to identify genes expressed in yeast in response to sublethal oxidative stress. Transcript levels were confirmed using semi quantitative reverse transcription-PCR. Seven antioxidant genes were up regulated. Pretreatment of the yeast antagonist Candida oleophila with glycine betaine (GB) increases oxidative stress tolerance in the microenvironment of apple wounds. ROS production is greater when yeast antagonists used as biocontrol agents are applied in the wounds. Compared to untreated control yeast cells, GB-treated cells recovered from the oxidative stress environment of apple wounds exhibited less accumulation of ROS and lower levels of oxidative damage to cellular proteins and lipids. Additionally, GB-treated yeast exhibited greater biocontrol activity against Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea, and faster growth in wounds of apple fruits compared to untreated yeast. The expression of major antioxidant genes, including peroxisomal catalase, peroxiredoxin TSA1, and glutathione peroxidase was elevated in the yeast by GB treatment. A mild heat shock (HS) pretreatment (30 min at 40 1C) improved the tolerance of M. fructicola to subsequent high temperature (45 1C, 20–30 min) and oxidative stress (0.4 mol-¹) hydrogen peroxide, 20–60 min). HS-treated yeast cells showed less accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) than non-treated cells in response to both stresses. Additionally, HS-treated yeast exhibited significantly greater (P≥0.0001) biocontrol activity against Penicillium expansum and a significantly faster (Po0.0001) growth rate in wounds of apple fruits stored at 25 1C compared with the performance of untreated yeast cells. Transcription of a trehalose-6-phosphate synthase gene (TPS1) was up regulated in response to HS and trehalose content also increased.

To clarify the buckling behavior of a wheel coupler high-formwork support system with a diagonal bracing, the positive and negative bending behaviors of the connection joints of the support were systematically studied through experiments. Through a parametric analysis and a finite element analysis, a precise numerical model of the connection joints of the wheel coupler was established and verified. Based on the characteristics of the semi-rigid connections, the buckling behavior of the overall structure was analyzed. The results showed that the failure modes in the positive direction were correlated with the insertion depth of the socket into the template; the greater the depth, the more likely the socket was to fracture. The failure modes in the negative direction were closely related to the insertion depth and the bending of the vertical post. An appropriate joint density was conducive to the overall stability. In the presence of a lateral constraint at the top, the greater the angle between the diagonal bracing and the horizontal plane, the better the overall stability under the same joint density. The optimal layout of the vertical diagonal bracing was a 2-span, 4-step arrangement, and the optimal angle was in the range of 30–70°. In the absence of a lateral constraint at the top, the smaller the angle between the diagonal bracing and the horizontal plane, the better the overall stability under the same joint density. The optimal angle was approximately 30° when the lift height was moderate.

Lubricating oils for automotive engines have been incorporating important improvements in chemical properties to increase engine performance, reduce fuel consumption and vehicular emissions indices, in addition to increasing the time interval for changing the lubricant itself. The objective of this study is to investigate the vibrational behavior of the block and crankshaft an Otto cycle internal combustion engine operated with ethanol and gasoline fuel as a function of the viscosity and total base number (TBN) of the lubricant. The study consisted of instrumenting the block and the 1st and 5th fixed bearings of the crankshaft with accelerometers to measure the engine vibration intensity and operating the engine on a bench dynamometer in a specific test cycle. Each experiment lasted 600 hours and every 50 hours a block and crankshaft engine vibration level were measured and 100ml sample of lubricating oil was collected to check viscosity and TBN chemical lubricant's properties. The results show that the block and crankshaft engine vibration level increases with the time of use of the lubricating oil and that this increase is very significant when the oil viscosity an TBN chemical properties reaches the minimum value stipulated by the manufacturer lubricating oil. Semi-synthetic and synthetic lubricating oils have similar engine protection characteristics, but synthetic oil protects the engine for a longer period of time due to less degradation of viscosity an TBN chemical properties compared to semi-synthetic. Mineral lubricating oil presented protection for a very short test period, due to the rapid degradation of chemical properties and measurements showed an average increase of 20% of vibration engine running with mineral lubricating oil in relation synthetic and semi-synthetic oils. This research is important because it correlates the degradation of the lubricating oil with the engine vibration level and vibration problems in internal combustion engines produce premature wear on the internal components of the engine, which contributes to reduce the lifespan of the engine. This study also shows how is important to observe the correct application of automotive oils.
