Повний текст джерелаThis empirical and synchronic study focuses on the actual uses of Spanish copulas ser and estar in predicative constructions in Mexican Spanish. The constructions studied here are those which admit both copulas. These constructions have been traditionally distinguished following Carlson’s (1977) Individual-level Predicates and Stage-level Predicates. Nevertheless, we have noticed that some of the occurrences of estar in Mexican Spanish cannot be explained by the Carlsonian distinction. This copula seems to be undergoing an extension process in some of the varieties of Latin American Spanish. Authors have studied Spanish copulas from different approaches and perspectives. To better understand the complexity of the matter, we have established a critical history of this issue. Then, following a discovery process based mostly on our native speaker’s intuition, we analyze the question applying a comparative experimental task between Mexican Spanish and European Spanish speakers, which shows important internal variations among Mexican native speakers. Finally, we propose a multifactorial analysis of our “natural”, i.e. spontaneous, written and oral corpora from different sources, which allows us to compare different patterns, and to identify which ones are significant for choosing estar. To conclude, the various potential semantic values entailed by copula choice are analyzed

Повний текст джерелаAnalysis of rainfall data and subsequent modeling of the many variables concerning rainfall is fundamental to many areas such as agricultural, ecological and engineering disciplines and, due to the complexity of the underlying hydrological system, it relies heavily on historical records. Daily rainfall series obtained from rain gauge networks are arguably the most used. A reliable and flexible single site model is the fundamental starting point of any more complex multi-site model taking into account the spatial correlations arising when observing a dense network of stations. Given the ever-growing interest in analysing the alternance between period of continuous rainfall and periods of drought, two-part discrete time models accounting separately for rainfall occurrence and rainfall amount processes are an useful tool to describe the behaviour of daily rainfall at a single station. In this context, we initially investigate the modeling of daily rainfall interarrival times through a family of discrete probability distributions known as the Hurwitz-Lerch-Zeta family, along with two other distributions which are deeply related to the latter and have never been considered with this aim. Building up on the relationships between the interarrival times and certain other temporal variables, a methodology for their modeling and empirical analysis is detailed. The latter procedure and the fitting performance of the aforementioned distributions is shown on a dataset composed of a variety of rainfall regimes. Moreover, being able to provide reliable modeling of rainfall related variables is essential in the well known issue of climate change. A starting point in detecting change is the multivariate modeling of rainfall variables, as a perceivable shift in the inter-relationships between these could reflect climate changes in a region. In this context, copulas are well known and valued for their flexibility. However, they lose their charm when dealing with discrete random vectors. In this case, the uniqueness of the copula is compromised, leading to inconsistencies which basically break down the theoretical underpinnings of the inferential procedures commonly used in the continuous case. Recently, Gery Geenens made a compelling case for a new approach, grounding its beliefs in historical ideas regarding the statistical analysis of contingency tables. The theoretical insights he gives, coupled with a computational tool known as iterative proportional fitting procedure, open up the path to our development of novel (semi-parametric or parametric) models for finitely supported bivariate discrete random vectors. With this aim, we prove a sklar-like decomposition of a bivariate discrete probability mass function between its margins and a copula probability mass function, on which the previously mentioned models hinge upon. Related inferential and goodness of fit procedures are investigated, both theoretically and empirically.Of the same significance as modeling the behavior of rainfall is its impact on water bodies and land surfaces. For istance, understanding the time it takes for rainfall to cause river levels to exceed a flood stage is of paramount importance for flood prediction and management. More in general, it is often crucial to determine the time at which certain hydrological thresholds are crossed by some hydrological quantity. When the latter's value in time is modelled by a stochastic process, the problem mentioned above can be restated in terms of the well known first passage time problem. In this context, a practical closed form computation of the first passage time probability density and distribution function is a delicate issue. Regarding this, we propose an approximation method based on a series expansion. Theoretical results are accompanied by discussions on the computational aspects. Extensive numerical experiments are carried out for the geometric Brownian motion and the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process

Повний текст джерелаThe aim of this study is double: bringing to know a not yet edited text and this through the most faithful possible transcription of a manuscript selected as an authentic historic witness to the plan of the literary history but also the given state of language. The systematic transcription of the text thus serves to bring to light certain linguistic practices of the scribe. On the one hand; we observe graphic uses which exceed the phonogrammic function, recognized originally as essential, to achieve a morphogrammic use emphasized by specific written forms which crea the recurrence of grammatical and lexical morphemes ; on the other hand, micro-systems appear through the original use of sequences and graphic segmentations which, in this manuscript, proceed very often from a reflexive movement. These observations are leading to think that a "grammar" of French goes back up beyond the XVth century. We would thus reveal in the case of this scribe an onset of grammatical reflection on the “writing procedures” of his manuscript which would announce the “theorization of French”, characteristic of the XVth and especially of XVIth centuries. While it is situated well before any form of standard prescriptive, this manuscript, which beside more traditional linguistic practices (XIIth-XIIIth centuries) sets up a certain number of micro-systems in the functioning of written forms as well as in that of the " graphic sequences ", announces nevertheless some of the principles which will lead to the normed codification of French. From this point of view, this manuscript allows to reveal the existence of a continuum in the history of the handwritten practices of French, registering this study in the perspectives of contemporary research on the French Diachrony

Повний текст джерела-résumé en anglais:The thesis mainly discusses two important syntactic phenomenons of Mandarin Chinese: verb copying constructions and BA-constructions, each of which presents a challenge to the generative approach of linguistics. I provided in the thesis a labeling analysis that allows to unify the two phenomena which are very different en the surface. In the part of verb copying constructions, I put forward the idea that the verb copying form is derived by VP movement, one of the grammatical strategies to provide a label to the unlabelable structure formed by the internal Merge between the postverbal complement and AspP, resulting in a {XP, YP} structure in the terms of Chomsky (2013). In the part of BA-construction, based on the movement hypothesis, I proposed that the movement of NP (the BA-NP) is to satisfy the subcategorization requirement of BA, and the internal Merge between the NP and the vP gives rise to a nominal structure labeled [φ], and we argue further that the role of BA is to provide a verbal label to the nominal structure under T, which otherwise, would be ruled out at the CI interface
Tiryakioglu, Gulay. "EFL learners' writing processes : the relationship between linguistic knowledge, composing processes and text quality." Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSE2047.
Повний текст джерелаWriting is a complex process both in the first language (L1) and in a foreign or second language (L2). Researchon second- and foreign-language writing processes is increasing, thanks to the existence of research tools thatenable us to look more closely at what language learners actually do as they write (Hyland, 2016; Van Waes etal., 2012; Wengelin et al., 2019); research on plurilingual writing behaviour remains, however, scarce. Thisstudy looks at the relationship between knowledge of language, typing skills, writing processes (writing fluency, pauses and revisions) and the quality of texts written by 30 middle school French students (14-15 years old),during writing in their first (French), and second (English) languages. In the second study, we looked at thiscomplex relationship among a sub-group of 15 middle school French-Turkish bilingual students (14-15 yearsold, residing in France) during writing in their home language (Turkish), school language (French), and English(a foreign language, also learned at school). The third study explores this complex relationship between thesubgroup of 17 bilingual learners (15 Turkish-French bilinguals and 2 Arabic-French bilinguals) and 13 Frenchmonolingual learners. We used a mixed-method study design: a combination of keystroke loggings, pre- and post-writingquestionnaires, students' written texts and stimulated recall interviews. Our participants performed three writingtasks (a copy task, a descriptive and a narrative task) in each language on the computer using the keystrokeloggingtool Inputlog (Leijten & Van Waes, 2013). Keystroke logging (the possibility of measuring precisetyping behaviour), which has developed over the past two decades, enables empirical investigation of typingbehaviour during writing. Data related to writing processes were analyzed from this Inputlog data: writingfluency was measured as characters per minute, words per minute, and mean pause-bursts (text producedbetween two pauses of 2000 milliseconds); pausing was measured as numbers of pauses, pause length, andlocation (within and between words); and revisions were measured as numbers of deletions and additions, andrevision-bursts (additions and deletions between two long pauses of 2000 milliseconds). Typing speed wasmeasured with the Inputlog copy task tool in three languages; we developed the Turkish copy task for our study, and it has been standardized and added to the Inputlog software. To assess text quality, a team of evaluatorsused both a holistic and an analytical rating scale to judge content, organization and language use in the L1, L2and L3 texts, and this qualitative assessment is compared with the quantitative Inputlog measures. We alsocollected stimulated recall protocol data from a focus group of seven writers, as they watched the keystrokelogged data unfold; this fascinating process enabled us to obtain information related to the writers’ thoughtsduring long pauses and revisions. Finally, we obtained background data on the participants’ writing behaviorsoutside the classroom with a questionnaire.Analyses of the keystroke logging data reveal important differences between L1 and L2 as well as between L1,L2 and L3 writing processes, which appear to be linked to our bilingual subjects’ linguistic backgrounds, andespecially their contact with written Turkish (Akinci, 2016). Writing processes were more fluent in French, withlonger pause-bursts, fewer pauses and revisions than writing in English and Turkish. Post-hoc comparisons ofwriting processes in the three project languages show that although there are significant differences betweenFrench and Turkish/English writing processes, English and Turkish writing processes are similar, with, however, significant fluency differences
