The species of Copidosoma Ratzeburg (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) are reviewed for Norway. Sixteen species are recognized, of which one, Copidosoma longicaudata sp. nov., is newly described, illustrated and compared with closely related species. Seven species represent new distribution records for Norway—C. aithyia (Walker), C. genale (Thomson), C. herbaceum Mercet, C. primulum (Mercet), C. radnense Erdős, C. thebe (Walker) and C. truncatellum (Dalman). An illustrated dichotomous key for the identification of both sexes of Norwegian Copidosoma is presented.

Six species of Copidosoma (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) from Southwestern China are reviewed, including three new species (C. heinitane sp. nov., C. linzhiensis sp. nov., C. longchuane sp. nov.) and two species newly recorded from China (C. longiclavatum Kazmi & Hayat and C. recurvariae Sharkov). Copidosoma serricorne (Dalman) is newly recorded from Xizang, southwestern part of China. A key to all the Chinese species of the genus based on females is given.

Copidosoma sp. se presenta como una al­ternativa para el control biológico de Neoleucinodes elegantalis en cultivos de tomate de árbol Cyphomandra betacea, en zonas de ladera (1800 msnm, 18 ° C y 80 % de HR) . El registro de un parasitis­mo natural del 73 % en algunas zonas productoras de la fruta indica el alto po­tencial del benéfico, razón por la cual se propuso una técnica de recuperación del parasitoide recolectando frutos infestados por la plaga para regresar los adultos de Copidosoma sp. al cultivo. Los resulta­dos indican un descenso aparente en las pérdidas de frutos como producto de la acción reguladora del parasitoide bajan­do los niveles de frutos dañados de 100 y 44 % a 3 y 8 %. Como resultado de esta protección sanitaria el agricultor reduce el empleo de insecticidas.

Twenty-two Chinese species of Copidosoma are studied. Two species, C. baii and C. phaloniae , are described as new to science. Thirteen species are recorded from China for the first time: C. albipes , C. anceus , C. ancharus , C. aretas , C. boucheanum , C. chalconotum , C. flagellare , C. fuscisquama , C. peticus , C. serricorne , C. subalbicorne , C. terebrator , and C. tibiale . Two synonymies are proposed: C. dailinicum (of C. sosares ) and C. heliothis (of C. primulum ). A key to species is given and photomicrographs are provided to illustrate morphological characters of the species.

Se estudió la biología, ciclo de vida, eficiencia y descripción taxonómica de Copidosoma n. sp. (Hymenoptera : Encyrtidae) parasitoide del perforador del fruto del tomate de árbol (Ciphomandra betacea Sent) Neoleucinodes Elegantalis (Lepidoptera : Crambidae). Entre los años 2006 y 2007 se visitaron predios en Cundinamarca con este cultivo, se recolectaron frutos infestados por N. Elegantalis, éstos se llevaron al Laboratorio de Diagnóstico Fitosanitario y Molecular del ICA–Tibaitatá. De los frutos emergían larvas de la plaga parasitadas por Copidosoma. n. sp., en forma de momias, se colocaron en frascos de vidrio hasta la emergencia de los adultos del parasitoide. Se encontró que el huevo ovarial es característico del género, con longitud de 0,14 ± 0,01 mm, 0,02 mm de ancho. La larva blanca crema tarda 12,81 ± 2 días y mide 1,87 ± 0,15 mm. La pupa exarata hialina que al madurar se torna oscura, tarda 18,44 ± 2,11 días y mide 1,48 ± 0,05 mm. El tiempo promedio de desarrollo desde parasitación a emergencia del fruto es de 28 días 80 y 29,4 ± 2,29 días en estado de momia, para un total de 58 días de desarrollo. La hembra mide 1,41 ± 0,13 mm y el macho 1,49 ± 0,12 mm. Con alimento el adulto vive 5,96 ± 4,1 días y sin alimento, 3,8 ± 1,09 días. Se obtuvo un total de 68 larvas momificadas a partir de 117 colectadas. Su distribución regional mostró un 57,01 y 100% de parasitoidismo en la región del Sumapaz y de Oriente, respectivamente. Taxonómica y morfológicamente es diferente a otras especies del género según diagnóstico del experto mundial en la familia Encyrtidae.

The distribution of introduced parasitoids of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) in Victoria is described. Apanteles subandinus Blanchard and Orgilus lepidus Muesebeck were most abundant, but Copidosoma koehleri Blanchard was also recorded from several sites. Detailed analysis of data obtained through regular monitoring revealed that, in an area free from insecticides, parasitoids were a major factor in controlling P. operculella. This result differs from previously published opinions on the effect of parasitoids, and is attributed to the analysis of data, in this study, on a generational basis. The effect of insectide applications on P. operculella and its parasitoids is discussed.

Polyembryonic wasps are the only parasitoids in which sociality has evolved. Theory implicates both competition and sex ratio manipulation in the evolution of a sterile soldier caste. However, investment in soldiers by males and females is predicted to differ depending upon how offspring are allocated to hosts and the mating system. Here, we compared male and female soldiers in the polyembryonic wasp Copidosoma floridanum . We found that male and female soldiers are morphologically identical. Unlike females, however, male soldiers were non-aggressive towards all competitors. We discuss these results in relation to theory and polyembryonic wasp biology.

Field studies were conducted near Rosemount, MN, during the years 1991–1994, 1996–1997, and 1999–2003, to assess the diversity of and parasitism by larval and pupal parasitoids of cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), imported cabbageworm, Pieris rapae (L.), and diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). Species composition, parasitism rate, and species abundance (Hill's N1) were determined for each pest species. Voria ruralis (Fallen), Copidosoma floridanum (Ashmead), and Compsilura concinnata (Meigen) were the dominant parasitoids of T. ni; Phryxe pecosensis (Townsend), Cotesia glomerata (L.), and Pteromalus puparum (L.) are the dominant parasitoids of P. rapae; and Diadegma insulare (Cresson) is the dominant parasitoid of P. xylostella. In addition, the first records of the introduced parasitoid, C. concinnata, parasitizing T. ni and P. rapae, and Cotesia rubecula (Marshall) parasitizing P. rapae are documented for Minnesota.

Larvae of the soybean looper (SBL), Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), were collected from soybean fields in south Georgia during the 1982, 1983, and 1984 growing seasons. Larvae were reared in the laboratory to determine levels of parasitism and disease incidence. Twelve parasitoid species including one hyperparasitoid were reared from SBL larvae. The three most common parasitoid species were Copidosoma truncatellum (Dalman), Meteorus autographae Muesebeck, and Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson). The most abundant pathogen was the fungus Entomophthora gammae Weiser, but the fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson and a nuclear polyhedrosis virus also were present. Peak SBL densities were 73.5 larvae per rowmeter in 1982, 30.9 in 1983, and 19.8 in 1984. Total mortality of larvae collected from different locales due to parasitism and disease ranged from 36.5 to 77.6% during 1982, from 4.8 to 73.2% during 1983, and from 0 to 93.9% during 1984.

A espécie Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), lagarta-falsa-medideira, ataca diversas culturas de importância econômica, causando, na maioria das vezes, prejuízos consideráveis. Foram realizados levantamentos de todas as fases de desenvolvimento do inseto, no período de abril/2009 a abril/2010, em uma cultura de maracujá-azedo, Passifora edulis f. flavicarpa, no município de Linhares-ES, após ter sido constatada sua presença na área. A lagarta foi observada durante os meses de abril a novembro/2009 e de fevereiro a abril/2010, sendo constatados surtos mais severos nos meses de junho, setembro e novembro/2009, atingindo índices de até 80% de folhas danificadas. A planta invasora Solanum americanum (maria-pretinha), associada à cultura, é também hospedeira do inseto. Como inimigos naturais da lagarta, foram constatados o parasitoide Copidosoma truncatellum (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) e o entomopatógeno Baculovirus sp.. Este é o primeiro registro da ocorrência de P. includens na cultura de maracujá-azedo.

Endoparasitoids have the ability to evade the cellular immune responses of a host and to create an environment suitable for survival of their progeny within a host. Generally, the host immune system is suppressed by endoparasitoids. However, polyembryonic endoparasitoids appear to invade their hosts using molecular mimicry rather than immune system suppression. It is not known how the host immune system is modified by polyembryonic endoparasitoids. Using haemocyte counts and measurement of cellular immune responses, we evaluated modification of the host immune system after separate infestations by a polyembryonic parasitoid ( Copidosoma floridanum ) and another parasitoid ( Glyptapanteles pallipes ) and by both together (multi-parasitism). We found that the polyembryonic parasitoid maintains and enhances the host immune system, whereas the other parasitoid strongly suppresses the immune system. Multi-parasitization analysis revealed that C. floridanum cancelled the immune suppression by G. pallipes and strengthened the host immunity. This enhancement was much stronger with male than with female C. floridanum .

The aim of this study was to identify the defoliating lepidopterans and their parasitoids occurring on okra plants in the district of Riberão Preto city (SP. Brazil). Caterpillars were collected by hand from an experimental field of okra, in March and April, 2009. They were placed individually on Petri dishes lined with wet filter paper, containing shredded okra leaves, and kept in a climactic chamber (25±1°C, 12:12h light/dark photoperiod, RH 70±10%) until the emergence of lepidopterans and/or parasitoids. In all, 63 lepidopterans were obtained: three species of Noctuidae, Anomis flava (Fabricius), Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) and Pseudoplusia includens (Walker); one of Pieridae, Ascia monuste orseis (Godart), and an unidentified species of Tortricidae. One unidentified tachinid fly (Diptera) and the Hymenoptera parasitoids Copidosoma floridanum (Ashmead) (Encyrtidae) and Euplectrus sp. (Eulophidae) emerged from A. flava, while C. floridanum and an unidentified tachinid, from P. includens. This is the first report of an association between the herbivores S. frugiperda, P. includens and A. monuste orceis, the parasitoids C. floridanum and Euplectrus sp. on okra plants.
