Anti-racist and queer politics have tentatively converged in the activist agendas, organizing strategies and political discourses of the radical left all over the world. Pejoratively dismissed as »identity politics«, the significance of this cross-pollination of theorizing and political solidarities has yet to be fully countenanced. Even less well understood, coalitions of anti-racist and queer activisms in western Europe have fashioned durable organizations and creative interventions to combat regnant anti-Muslim and anti-migrant racism within mainstream gay and lesbian culture and institutions, just as the latter consolidates and capitalizes on their uneven inclusions into national and international orders. The essays in this volume represent a small snapshot of writers working at this point of convergence between anti-racist and queer politics and scholarship from the context of Germany. Translated for the first time into English, these four writers and texts provide a compelling introduction to what the introductory essay calls »a Berlin chapter of the Queer Intersectional«, that is, an international justice movement conducted in the key of academic analysis and political speech which takes inspiration from and seeks to synthesize the fruitful concoction of anti-racist, queer, feminist and anti-capitalist traditions, movements and theories. This chapter reviews the evolution of Italy’s social order between the political unification of the peninsula, achieved in 1861, and the end of Fascism, in 1943. It follows the country’s convergence to Europe’s early industrializers, which accelerated near the end of the nineteenth century and was assisted by appropriate institutional reforms. In the presence of a large anti-systemic opposition the country’s social order opened up only modestly and hesitantly, however, and in the early 1920s its elites preferred Fascism to democratization. Under this regime the progress made by political institutions during the liberal period was reversed, convergence slowed down markedly, and the divergence of the South from the rest of Italy peaked. The chapter underlines the essential continuity of the country’s social order and elites between the liberal epoch and Fascism.

Justice and International Order: East and West compares Western and Chinese conceptions of justice, ancient and modern. The book argues that most conceptions can be reduced to the principles of fairness and equality, although they are developed and expressed quite differently in the two cultures. In the modern era there has been a noticeable shift in both cultures in giving equality priority over fairness. In ancient and modern times there is greater variation regarding justice within each culture than there is between them. This overlap, and arguably in some ways convergence, provides the basis for restructuring Sino-American relations along lines that could prove acceptable to leaders and peoples of both countries. The book extends its argument to international order and asks how it could be made more effective and consensual. Building on our principles of justice, it identifies some of the pathways that would lead to a more peaceful world, one in which the weak and poor as well as the rich and powerful would feel included and rewarded.

However, looking forward, to maximize fully the benefits to it of the international trading system, India’s attention must now turn to facilitating convergence between its domestic policy and its foreign policy. This chapter discusses India’s trajectory in the international trading system over the years and the domestic issues India must now confront in order to fully garner its benefits.

In the post-Reformation controversy over the roles of Scripture and tradition, many theologians misread the Council of Trent as if it had taught that Scripture and tradition are two ‘materially’ separate and equally valid ‘sources’ (plural) of revelation. But Trent reserved the term ‘source’ for the ‘Gospel’, or one revealed message of salvation in Christ. When a personal (rather than a propositional) view of revelation as primary emerged, along with a recognition of the mutual dependence of Scripture and tradition, the stage was set for an ecumenical convergence on tradition. This substantial convergence appeared in a 1963 report of the Faith and Order Commission (of the World Council of Churches) and the teaching of the Second Vatican Council. The common lines of thinking, inspired in part by Yves Congar, Gerhard Ebeling, and Hans-Georg Gadamer, provide a background for discussing tradition today.

This chapter characterizes the convergence stage, the second stage of the process of introducing new moral norms and addresses some general objections to the possibility of doing so. This involves a de facto, but not illegitimately reached, convergence whereby some candidate norm that has arisen via the Input Stage becomes, globally, a social norm. The objection that no one has special moral expertise is defused by pointing out that the account does not rely on that assumption. The objection that the idea of moral authority is incompatible with honoring individual autonomy is defused by arguing that the account does not require anyone to accept anything simply on another’s say-so. The objection that newly specified norms are not really “new” is met by explaining that they make a general difference to people’s rights, duties, and permissions and cannot be derived from the first-order moral norms earlier in force.

The period around 300 BCE was one of dramatic change in the structure of the Republican economy. This chapter details the chronological convergence of three developments relevant to Rome’s production of large-scale infrastructure: the appearance of coinage, the expansion of public contracting, and attachment of the censor to the maintenance and construction of the city’s buildings. Together, these trends allowed speak to a broad shift in the logic of Rome’s urban economy towards more market-based ways of organizing major productive activity. To explain this change, I focus on the rising attachment of some Roman elites in this period to more liquid wealth gained from trade and market production. This period has drawn significant interest for the emergence of a new ruling order, the patricio-plebeian nobilitas, and economic change is interpreted within this dynamic political context.

Psychiatry can benefit from methods of handling the challenge of evolving and shifting taxonomy that have been effective in other areas. Epistemic iteration creates successive stages of knowledge in order to attain certain goals. Inquiry can begin in the absence of assured foundations, using the results to correct and refine its starting point. If the iterative process converges, the pattern may be regarded as cumulative progress. But what if convergence is to a “local minimum, ” not to the best answer? I propose that all local minima should be appreciated as achievements with realist significance. A field like medicine or social care seems to require a unified taxonomic framework for the effective coordination of action, so it may be best to maintain one system as the official framework for action while fostering research in multiple systems, until another system shows itself to be clearly superior to the official one.

Organizational contradictions and process studies offer interwoven and complementary insights. Studies of dialectics, paradox, and dualities depict organizational contradictions that are oppositional as well as interrelated such that they persistently morph and shift over time. Studies of process often examine how contradictions fuel emergent, dynamic systems and stimulate novelty, adaptation, and transformation. Drawing from rich conversations at the Eighth International Symposium on Process Organization Studies, the contributors to this volume unpack these relationships in more depth. The chapters explore three main, connected themes through both conceptual and empirical studies, including (1) offering insight into how process theorizing advances understandings of organizational contradictions; (2) shedding light on how dialectics, paradoxes, and dualities fuel organizational processes that affect persistence and transformation; and (3) exploring the convergence and divergence of dialectics, paradox, and dualities lenses. This chapter analyzes several distinctive elements of the digital Korean Wave with the case of smartphones, compared to the mobile era until 2008. Here, the digital Korean Wave refers to the rapid growth of digital technologies, in particular smartphones, and the export of domestic-made smartphones to the global markets as part of the growth of the New Korean Wave. However, the digital wave also means the convergence of technology and culture in order to boost the rapid penetration of cultural genres, such as animation and K-pop in the global markets. It is connected to the significance of several services, in particular intellectual property rights, which are crucial for capital accumulation. The chapter starts with an examination of the Korean IT policy, which drives the growth of smartphones, in tandem with corporate policies. Through the lens of technological hybridization, it discusses whether the global penetration of Korean smartphones resolves the uneven power logic between Western, in this case the United States, and non-Western, meaning Korea, in the social media era.

When the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts erupted in violent protest in August 1965, the uprising drew strength from decades of pent-up frustration with employment discrimination, residential segregation, and poverty. Book Abstract: How should the state face the challenge of radical pluralism? How could constitutional orders be changed when they prove unable to regulate society? Santi Romano, Carl Schmitt, and Costantino Mortati, the leading figures of Continental legal institutionalism, provided three responses that deserve our full attention today. Mariano Croce and Marco Goldoni introduce and analyze these three towering figures for a modern audience. Romano thought pluralism to be an inherent feature of legality and envisaged a far-reaching reform of the state for it to be a platform of negotiation between autonomous normative regimes. Schmitt believed pluralism to be a dangerous deviation that should be curbed through the juridical exclusion of alternative institutional formations. Mortati held an idea of the constitution as the outcome of a basic agreement among hegemonic forces that should shape a shared form of life. The Legacy of Pluralism explores the convergences and divergences of these towering jurists to take stock of their ground-breaking analyses of the origin of the legal order and to show how these help us cope with the current crisis of national constitutional systems.

This book offers a critical perspective to the proliferation of official multilingualism in the contemporary world. Through diachronic and synchronic comparisons, it shows that official multilingualism has become a norm in the political management of linguistic diversity, but actual practices vary according to sociohistorical contexts and current power dynamics. It explains such convergences and divergences using a theory of symbolic jurisprudence, which posits that official language law has served chiefly as a discursive resource for a range of political and economic functions, such as ensuring stability, establishing legitimacy, balancing rival powers, and harnessing trade opportunities. The book goes on to examine the practical impact of official multilingualism on public institutions and legal processes and the application of linguistic equality—frequently asserted in multilingual polities—on the ground. The study shows that serious pursuit of linguistic equality calls for elaborate administrative effort in public institutions and carries a potential to clash with existing legal practices (from legal drafting and interpretation, to language rights in trial proceedings). However, such changes—however extensive—hardly ever disrupt the status quo. The book further argues that linguistic equality as proclaimed and practiced in many polities today is shallow in character, and must not be confused with popular conceptions of equality. The book concludes that both symbolic jurisprudence and shallow equality are components of a policy of strategic pluralism that underlies official multilingualism. Although official multilingualism can legitimately be used to pursue collective goals, it runs the underlying risks of disguising substantive inequalities and displacing more progressive efforts in social change.

This study explores the emerging politics of peace, both as an ideal and as a pragmatic aspect of international relations during the early Cold War. By tracing the myriad ways in which a broad spectrum of people involved in and affected by the Cold War used, altered, and fought over this seemingly universal concept, it deconstructs the assumed binary between realist and idealist foreign policy approaches generally accepted among contemporary policymakers. It argues that a politics of peace emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as a result of a gradual convergence between idealism and realism. A transnational politics of peace succeeded only when idealist objectives met the needs of realist political ambition. It maps three dynamic arenas that together shaped the global discourse on peace: Cold War states, peace advocacy groups, and anticolonial liberationists. The thematic focus on peace moves transnationally where transnational discourses on peace emerged. It reveals the transnational networks that challenged and eventually undermined the Cold War order. It deterritorializes the Cold War by revealing the multiple divides that emerged within each Cold War camp, as peace activists challenged their own governments over the right path toward global peace, and also challenged each other over the best strategy. The Politics of Peace assumes a global perspective once peace advocates confronted the violence of national liberation movements in the Third World. It thus demonstrates that the Cold War was both more ubiquitous and less territorial than previously assumed.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests with a range of cognitive, behavioral, and social impairments. It is a monogenetic disease caused by silencing of the FMR1 gene, in contrast to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is a behaviorally-defined set of complex disorders. Because ASD is a major and growing public health concern, current research is focused on identifying common therapeutic targets among patients with different molecular etiologies. Due to the prevalence of ASD in FXS and its shared neurophysiology with ASD, FXS has been extensively studied as a model for ASD. Studies in the animal models have provided breakthrough insights into the pathophysiology of FXS that have led to novel therapeutic targets for its core deficits (e.g., mGluR theory of fragile X). Yet recent clinical trials of both GABA-B agonist and mGluR5 antagonist revealed a lack of specific and sensitive outcome measures capturing the full range of improvements of patients with FXS. Recent research shows promise for the mapping of the multitude of genetic variants in ASD onto shared pathways with FXS. Nonetheless, in light of the huge level of locus heterogeneity in ASD, further effort in finding convergence in specific molecular pathways and reliable biomarkers is required in order to perform targeted treatment trials with sufficient sample size. This chapter focuses on the neurobehavioral phenotype caused by a full-mutation of the FMR1 gene, namely FXS, and the neurobiology of this disorder of relevance to the targeted molecular treatments of its core symptoms.

This volume critically reassesses the history of international law studies in the Italian context. It aims to address such basic questions as: How have such studies been driven by the convergence of global dynamics and context-dependent solutions based on local features, through a constant process of attrition and cross-fertilization? To what extent have historical and political turning points had an influence on such studies, scholars being part of broader academic or public debates or even active participants as legal advisers or politicians? Was international law used—or misused—by relevant actors in such contexts? Mixing scholars specialized in both international law and legal history this volume first provides a historical examination of the theoretical legal analysis present in the Italian context, in order to explore its main features, mainstream ideas, and dissident voices. The second part assesses the impact on international law studies of key international and domestic historical and political events involving Italy and, conversely, how the latter have been influenced by international law evaluations. Finally, a concluding part puts such analysis into broader and contemporary perspectives. This volume thus intervenes in a growing debate on the need to explore international law from comparative and situated viewpoints, a debate that has increased awareness of how regional, national, and local contexts have contributed to the shaping of international legal rules, institutions, and doctrines and, conversely, how the international dimension has influenced solutions at local levels, in light of the continuum pendulum between center and periphery of the international legal system.

This book offers an interpretation of Italy’s decline, which began two decades before the Great Recession. It argues that its deeper roots lie in the political economy of growth. This interpretation is illustrated through a discussion of Italy’s political and economic history since its unification, in 1861. The emphasis is placed on the country’s convergence to the productivity frontier and TFP performance, and on the evolution of its social order and institutions. The lens through which its history is reviewed, to illuminate the origins and evolution of the current constraints to growth, is drawn from institutional economics and Schumpeterian growth theory. It is exemplified by analysing two alternative reactions to the insufficient provision of public goods: an opportunistic one—employing tax evasion, corruption, or clientelism as means to appropriate private goods—and one based on enforcing political accountability. From the perspective of ordinary citizens and firms such social dilemmas can typically be modelled as coordination games, which have multiple equilibria. Self-interested rationality can thus lead to a spiral, in which several mutually reinforcing vicious circles lead society onto an inefficient equilibrium characterized by low political accountability and weak rule of law. The book follows the gradual setting in of this spiral, despite an ambitious attempt at institutional reform, in 1962–4, and its resumption after a severe endogenous shock, in 1992–4. It concludes that innovative ideas can overcome the constraints posed by that spiral, and ease the country’s shift onto a fairer and more efficient equilibrium.

This book opens by establishing the substantial convergence in reflection on Christian tradition proposed by a 1963 report of the Faith and Order Commission (of the World Council of Churches) and the teaching of Vatican II (1962–5). Despite this ecumenical consensus, in recent years few theologians have written about tradition, and none has looked to the social sciences for insights into the nature and functions of tradition. Drawing above all on sociologists, this work shows the difference that tradition makes in human and religious life. In the light of the divine self-revelation that climaxed with Jesus Christ, the central characteristics of tradition are set out: in particular, its relationship to and distinction from culture. The risen Christ himself is the central Tradition (upper case) at the heart of Christian life. All the baptized faithful, and not merely their ordained leaders, play a role in transmitting tradition. The ‘sense of the faithful’ amounts to a ‘sense of the tradition’. The essential, if invisible, agent of tradition remains always the Holy Spirit. Scripture and tradition function in mutual dependence, as shown by the emergence of the creeds, the image of Christ as the New Adam, and the doctrine of justification (on which a 1999 joint declaration shows substantial agreement now reached by Lutherans, Roman Catholics, and others). The full context of Christian life and history focuses the relationship between Scripture and tradition. The book deals with the challenge of discerning and reforming particular traditions. A closing appendix shows how modern studies of memory—above all, collective memory—can illuminate ways in which tradition works to maintain Christian identity and continuity.

Presentamos a la comunidad académica este libro producto de investigación, queriendo aportar nuevos elementos al análisis de la gestión empresarial, desde la óptica de la interdisciplinariedad y la transdisciplinariedad y bajo el paradigma de la complejidad. Con ello se pretende articular diferentes enfoques teóricos de diferentes disciplinas convergentes, fortaleciendo tópicos que aún se encuentran en proceso de desarrollo como la estructuración de la teoría general contable y la contametría, que a pesar de ello nos abren caminos interesantes de exploración contribuyendo de esa manera a la consolidación de la ciencia contable como una ciencia social, pero también colaborando, a partir de esos aportes, a enriquecer aspectos fundamentales de la ciencias dialogantes, como la administración, la economía, las finanzas y la misma sociología y aprovechando de éstas sus desarrollos en la misma línea de mutuo fortalecimiento. En ese orden de ideas en el primer capítulo se presentan los argumentos fundamentales Contamétricos para un nuevo enfoque de la gerencia financiera, desde la teoría general contable. Ello nos conduce a proponer una transformación de le gerencia financiera en una gerencia integral del valor, apoyándose en una visión más amplia del análisis de los fenómenos humanos cuya esencia es por excelencia social, visto desde las diferentes perspectivas de las ciencias afines, que también están trasegando por esa vía. En el segundo capítulo se aboca la problemática de La generación de valor social como nuevo marco de análisis estratégico de las organizaciones, recorriendo elementos clave para la comprensión de este importante tópico como los siguientes: • La creación de valor como objetivo fundamental de las organizaciones. • La generación del valor social como motor del desarrollo organizacional. • Los inductores de valor como nuevos medidores de la eficiencia, eficacia y productividad organizacional. • Los nuevos modelos de negocios y la creación de valor. Como se puede observar es un despliegue de los últimos desarrollos gerenciales en que se apoyan las disciplinas convergentes de la administración, la economía, la contabilidad y las finanzas, permitiendo comprobar que el enfoque sistémico e interdisciplinar genera frutos bondadosos desde la perspectiva científica y académica. Online social networks have made sharing personal experiences with others mostly in form of photos and comments a common activity. The convergenceof social, mobile, cloud and wearable computing expanded the scope of usergeneratedand shared content on the net from personal media to individual preferencesto physiological details (e.g., in the form of daily workouts) to informationabout real-world possessions (e.g., apartments, cars). Once everydaythings become increasingly networked (i.e., the Internet of Things), future onlineservices and connected devices will only expand the set of things to share. Given that a new generation of sharing services is about to emerge, it is of crucialimportance to provide service designers with the right insights to adequatelysupport novel sharing practices. This work explores these practices within twoemergent sharing domains: (1) personal activity tracking and (2) sharing economyservices. The goal of this dissertation is to understand current practices ofsharing personal digital and physical possessions, and to uncover correspondingend-user needs and concerns across novel sharing practices, in order to map thedesign space to support emergent and future sharing needs. We address this goalby adopting two research strategies, one using a bottom-up approach, the otherfollowing a top-down approach.In the bottom-up approach, we examine in-depth novel sharing practices within two emergent sharing domains through a set of empirical qualitative studies.We offer a rich and descriptive account of peoples sharing routines and characterizethe specific role of interactive technologies that support or inhibit sharingin those domains. We then design, develop, and deploy several technology prototypesthat afford digital and physical sharing with the view to informing the design of future sharing services and tools within two domains, personal activitytracking and sharing economy services.In the top-down approach, drawing on scholarship in human-computer interaction (HCI) and interaction design, we systematically examine prior workon current technology-mediated sharing practices and identify a set of commonalitiesand differences among sharing digital and physical artifacts. Based uponthese findings, we further argue that many challenges and issues that are presentin digital online sharing are also highly relevant for the physical sharing in thecontext of the sharing economy, especially when the shared physical objects havedigital representations and are mediated by an online platform. To account forthese particularities, we develop and field-test an action-driven toolkit for designpractitioners to both support the creation of future sharing economy platformsand services, as well as to improve the user experience of existing services.This dissertation should be of particular interest to HCI and interaction designresearchers who are critically exploring technology-mediated sharing practicesthrough fieldwork studies, as well to design practitioners who are building and evaluating sharing economy services.
