Conducting discussions on controversial political issues is an important vehicle to promote students’ democratic values and critical thinking in schools. This schoolwide task cuts across all disciplines and different subject matter. Israeli civics and social studies teachers are often required to touch upon such issues and manage the situations that follow. This study examined whether civics and social studies teachers are different from teachers of other disciplines in their attitudes toward controversial political issues and in their reported behaviors. Civics and social studies teachers scored higher in all the variables related to discussions of controversial political issue and reported more relevant behaviors. In examining the variables that predict teachers’ self-efficacy to conduct controversial political issue discussions, variables that related to professional identity were the strongest predictors alongside pluralistic attitudes. We concluded that teacher training should emphasize the importance of discussions of controversial political issue and develop teachers’ ability to conduct such discussions as part of their professional role.

Expansion of the wolf in the Czech Republic results in an increasing conflict between nature conservationists and other landscape users. In March 2020, the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic issued the "Wolf Management Programme". The document provoked negative reactions from organisations of farmers, breeders, and hunters. The article deals with the key issues triggered by the conflict and the attitudes of actors involved. We want to clarify to what extent the solutions designed by individual parties help to mitigate the conflict and how the financial demands related to this issue have been evolving. The problem may seem marginal in the Czech Republic, but the wolf population density in some regions may already be close to its bearable maximum. Key problems are the identification of specific target numbers of wolves, the absence of zoning as a future option, and clear rules for dealing with direct encounters of wolves with humans. The benefit of wolf management is primarily the sum of preventive measures it aims to address, but the relationship with other main actors and the area of education and promotion is debatable as it represents a further increase in the absorption of public funds without guarantees of effectiveness.

Avoiding the discussion of controversial topics in U.S. classrooms deprives students of an important part of their learning. Jonathan Zimmerman and Emily Robertson, authors of The Case for Contention: Teaching Controversial Issues in American Schools (University of Chicago Press, 2017) say Americans are terrible at having informed, reasonable debates in part because schools do not prepare students for such exchanges. Although our policies encourage or even require instruction about controversy, we do a poor job of preparing and supporting teachers to ensure that they can provide such instruction. Teachers need both the prestige to lead the discussion of controversial issues and the protection to do so consistently. In addition, Americans need more education about exactly what constitutes a controversy, which is itself a controversial issue.

The role of crystalline silica in lung cancer has long been the subject of controversy. In this article, we review the main experimental and epidemiological studies dealing with this problem. Some evidence for a genotoxic potential of crystalline silica has been obtained in the rare in vitro studies published to date. In vivo studies have shown that crystalline silica is carcinogenic in the rat; the tumour types appear to vary according to the route of administration. In addition, an association between carcinogenic and fibrogenic potency has been observed in various animal species exposed to crystalline silica. An excess of lung cancer related to occupational exposure to crystalline silica is reported in many epidemiological studies, regardless of the presence of silicosis. However, most of these studies are difficult to interpret because they do not correctly take into account associated carcinogens such as tobacco smoke and other occupational carcinogens. An excess of lung cancer is generally reported in studies based on silicosis registers. Overall, experimental and human studies suggest an association between exposure to crystalline silica and an excess of pulmonary malignancies. Although the data available are not sufficient to establish a clear-cut causal relationship in humans, an association between the onset of pneumoconiosis and pulmonary malignancies is probable. In contrast, experimental observations have given rise to a pathophysiological mechanism that might account for a putative carcinogenic potency of crystalline silica.

This study explores the attribute agenda-setting effects and attribute priming effects of news coverage on the issue of same-sex marriage. The affective attribute salience of news coverage on the same-sex marriage issue is stronger when related to public opinion than the substantive attribute salience of the news coverage. News coverage on the issue is strongly associated with audience attitudes about controversial issues. Last, on controversial issues, news media have long-term, rather than short-term, effects on public opinion.

Abstract Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms can spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei even though they are not obviously invasive in the appendix. During the past several decades, several problematic issues surrounding this enigmatic tumor have been debated in the literature, including appropriate nomenclature for the appendiceal tumors and their peritoneal metastases. In this article, the most contentious issues in the area of appendiceal mucinous tumors are examined. First, the classification systems that have been proposed for these tumors are compared in the context of whether the appendiceal mucinous tumors are ruptured adenomas or invasive carcinomas. The controversy about the nature of pseudomyxoma peritonei and its classification systems is discussed in the following section. A brief discussion follows that examines the issue of localized pseudomyxoma peritonei and its clinical significance. Next reviewed is the largely resolved controversy about whether ovarian mucinous tumors in this setting are separate primaries or are metastases from the appendiceal tumor. Finally, the controversy about the most effective treatment of patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei is discussed.

Philosophers of education disagree on how the question of the moral status of homosexual acts should be tackled in the classroom. Some argue that the question should be taught as a controversial issue, that we should present rival moral positions as even-handedly as possible; others maintain that we should actively promote the view that homosexual acts are morally legitimate or unproblematic. Here I attempt to resolve this disagreement. In the first part of the article I defend the use of Robert Dearden's epistemic criterion for identifying the questions that should be taught as controversial issues. In the second part I argue that the question of the moral status of homosexual acts does not satisfy this criterion because moral objections to homosexuality are rationally indefensible. I conclude that we ought to affirm the moral legitimacy of homosexual acts in the moral education of children and young people.

Background Having students engage with controversial issues is considered a hallmark of a quality civic education, in part because it requires students to interact with perspectives that contradict their existing worldviews, evaluate the legitimacy of positions based on evidence, and develop the skills and dispositions necessary for participation in an increasingly pluralistic democratic society. Most of the research on the teaching of controversial issues, however, has focused on how teachers and students respond to controversy as opposed to how controversy is framed. Teachers must determine whether an issue should be considered “open,” or controversial, or “settled,” or noncontroversial, in their classrooms, a decision that is both pedagogically important and often controversial. For issues that have been settled for some time, such as slavery or woman suffrage, the decision whether to frame them as open or settled is typically easy for teachers; however, issues that are in the process of tipping from open to settled, or vice versa, are more challenging and require that teachers make instructional decisions based on evidence and logical reasoning. Purpose The purpose of this article is to critically analyze whether the issue of marriage equality should be framed as controversial in the aftermath of the 2015 landmark Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage in the United States. In doing so, this article also offers several implications for the teaching of controversial issues broadly, particularly those that intersect with the identities of students and teachers. Research Design This article makes an analytical/theoretical argument using three commonly cited criteria for determining the openness of controversial issues: the epistemic criterion, the political criterion, and the politically authentic criterion. Conclusions/Recommendations After evaluating marriage equality using each criterion, I conclude that no rational reason exists for treating marriage quality as an open issue post-Obergefell. I also argue that the issue of marriage equality illustrates the need for teachers to be cognizant of how discussions of controversial issues that implicate students’ identities may impact students who may be marginalized by those issues. I recommend that when such issues have reached the point where subjective decisions must be made in determining whether they are framed as open or settled, deference should be made to framing those issues in a way that promotes public values as opposed to legitimizing private views.

Sometimes in response we only follow the understanding of some people who greatly glorify freedom in all fields (Liberal), although it is in terms of a very private as well as religion. In a liberal sense the beliefs of religious differences in marriage are not a problem. Liberalism is a notion that requires the freedom of individuals in all fields. This study is intended to analyze the legal basis of inter-religious marriage or mixed marriage in Indonesia. This study highlighted and found that inter-religious marriage is become complicate problem when trying to determine some basic rights, including the property, child, and the others.

Women of reproductive age and infants are at particular risk of ID, especially in underdeveloped countries. During pregnancy, iron deficiency anemia is a specific risk factor associated with negative maternal and perinatal outcomes. Many countries have iron supplementation (IS) programs—as recommended by the World Health Organization—during pregnancy; however, IS clinical benefits and risks are unclear. This review aims to discuss the threats and benefits of routine IS on maternal and infant outcomes.

The murder of the Austro-Hungarian crown prince Franco Ferdinand and his wife, Sofia Hohenberg, in Sarajevo in 1914, opened numerous questions and controversies. Opposite conclusions and observations on this issue were elaborated not only by historians, but by politologists, sociologists, psychologists, and others, which was only one of the reasons why many issues in this issue remain in the sphere of controversial answers. It is therefore to be assumed that the giving of the final scientific court, the murder that triggered the world cataclysm, will continue to be the subject of many discussions and controversies. In this paper, the author sought to highlight events from this turbulent time in the Herzegovina region based on archival material, which has not been published so far.

The purpose of this study is to determine the critical thinking skills of students in class VIII B of SMP Negeri 2 Ciamis, Indonesia which emerged through a controversial issue model in social studies learning. This study used a qualitative and quantitative approach. 33 students in class VIII B were taken as the subject of this study. The four stages of classroom action research were planning, action, observation, and reflection which carried out in two cycles, and each cycle consists of two meetings. The data collection techniques used tests, observations, documentation, and field notes. The data analysis techniques used qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The results of the study were: 1) social studies learning by means of a controversial issue model includes four steps, namely: (a) the teacher or student presented a case or issue related to the learning to be carried out, (b) the teacher made a group of students so that they were able to discuss problems or issues that had been presented. (c) the group representatives either as the defenders or the attackers of an opinion on a controversial issue, (d) then the teacher and students concluded and gave suggestions from the activity. 2) the implementation of the controversial Issue model in social studies learning could improve students' critical thinking skills. This can be seen from the average ability developed by each action reached 12.8 which was enough categories in cycle I, then changed to 16.8 which was good categories in cycle II. Keywords: Critical Thinking, Controversial Issues, Social Studies LearningABSTRAKTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa kelas VIII B SMP Negeri 2 Ciamis yang muncul melalui model controversial issues dalam pembelajaran IPS. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan kuantitatif dengan subjek penelitian siswa kelas VIII B SMP Negeri 2 Ciamis yang berjumlah 33 orang. Empat tahapan penelitian tindakan kelas meliputi: perencanaan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. yang dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus, dan tiap siklus terdiri dari dua pertemuan. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan tes, observasi, studi dokumen dan catatan lapangan. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian yang di peroleh adalah: 1) Bahwa pembelajaran IPS dengan menerapkan model controversial issue meliputi empat langkah yaitu : (a) guru atau siswa menyodorkan suatu kasus atau isu yang berkaitan dengan pembelajaran yang akan di laksanakan, (b) guru membentuk kelompok siswa agar mampu membahas masalah atau isu yang telah di sajikan. (c) perwakilan kelompok dapat menjadi pembela atau penyerang suatu pendapat tentang isu kontroversial di sertai alasan. (d) kemudian guru dan siswa menyimpulkan serta memberi saran terhadap pembelajaran yang telah terjadi. 2) Implementasi model controversial Issue dalam pembelajaran IPS mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari rata-rata kemampuan yang dikembangkan setiap tindakan mencapai 12,8 berkategori cukup pada siklus I, kemudian berubah menjadi 16,8 berkategori baik pada siklus II. Terrorism is commonly considered to be a controversial issue in religious education (RE). RE teachers find it a challenging topic to address, and many avoid it altogether. This article explores the question of addressing terrorism in RE by analysing and discussing empirical observations of RE lessons in an upper secondary school in Norway in the weeks following the terror attacks in Paris in November 2015. Using framing theory, the article discusses aspects of the empirical case study, contextualised by the discussion about controversial issues in education. The main claim of the article is that, rather than seeing the terror attacks as a controversial issue in itself, the terror attacks should be treated as an event that has the potential to tap into several different controversial issues depending on the way it is framed. When addressed in the RE classroom, the teachers actively transform the event into a pedagogical issue, framed in accordance with the nature and aims of the subject. The students, however, often contest this pedagogical framing. This article discusses the interplay between teachers’ plans, students’ reactions, and the role of media in classroom interaction about the Paris attacks.

More and more people are involved in sustainability-related activities through social network to support/protect their idea or motivation for sustainable development. Understanding the variety of issues of social pulsation is crucial in development of social sustainability. However, issues in social media generally change overtime. Issues not identified in advance may soon become popular topics discussed in society, particularly controversial issues. Previous studies have focused on the detection of hot topics and discussion of controversial issues, rather than the identification of potential controversial issues, which truly require paying attention to social sustainability. Furthermore, previous studies have focused on issue detection and tracking based on historical data. However, not all controversial issues are related to historical data to foster the cases. To avoid the above-mentioned research gap, Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays an essential role in issue detection in the early stage. In this study, an AI-based solution approach is proposed to resolve two practical problems in social media: (1) the impact caused by the number of fan pages from Facebook and (2) awareness of the levels for an issue. The proposed solution approach to detect potential issues is based on the popularity of public opinion in social media using a Web crawler to collect daily posts related to issues in social media under a big data environment. Some analytical findings are carried out via the congregational rules proposed in this research, and the solution approach detects the attentive subjects in the early stages. A comparison of the proposed method to the traditional methods are illustrated in the domain of green energy. The computational results demonstrate that the proposed approach is accurate and effective and therefore it provides significant contribution to upsurge green energy deployment.

Human rights is currently a very relevant but also very controversial issue in international politics in the aftermath of some of the events that occurred during the twentieth century. In this article, the author puts the present issues in perspective by initiating the discussion with a look at aspects of the historical development of the concept of human rights. He then moves on to take a closer look at how the concept of human rights feature and function in the Christian religion and follows that up with an overview of how human rights are perceived and are operative in the religion of Islam. The article concludes with a focus on inter-cultural discourse.

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan efektifitas model pembelajaran controversial issue dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berfikir kritis mahasiswa pada mata kuliah Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan di Unit Pelaksana Teknis Mata Kuliah Pengembangan Kepribadian Universitas Sriwijaya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas (classroom action research) sebanyak tiga siklus dimana setiap siklus melalui tahapan perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi, evaluasi dan refleksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa implementasi model pembelajaran controversial issue dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berfikir kritis mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran mata kuliah Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan. Peningkatan kemampuan berfikir kritis tersebut terlihat pada keterampilan mahasiswa dalam mengidentifikasi masalah, mendefinisikan masalah, mengeksplorasi masalah, mengevaluasi dan mengintegrasikan berbagai macam solusi menjadi suatu jawaban yang komprehensif terhadap suatu permasalahan.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This article tries to reveal the effectiveness of controversial issue based teaching model to increase students’ critical thinking skills at Unit Pelaksana Teknis Mata Kuliah Pengembangan Kepribadian Universitas Sriwijaya. It was a classroom action research with three cycles, each of which consists of planing, observation, evaluation and reflection. The results reveal that the implementation of controversial issue based teaching model can increase students’ critical thinking skills in Citizenship Education Program. This increasing of critical thinking skills was indicated by the skills to identify problem, to define problem, to explore problem, to evaluate, and to integrate any kinds of solutions in order to comprehend the problem.

This qualitative case study examines the Peace Case in its historical context and scrutinizes the complexities. Ms Butera, who became known as the ‘peace teacher’, had to deal with in the aftermath of her remark ‘I honk for peace’ in her classroom. Drawing from the fields of peace education and educational leadership and policy studies, the study aims to shed light to the dominant dynamics in the case, especially those that might be discouraging teachers to integrate the potentially controversial themes related to war and peace into their curricula. To this end, it first discusses peace education as a controversial issue and illustrates several facets of peace education that make it controversial. Following this, an analysis of a post-Garcetti case, which is known as the ‘Peace Case’, is presented. As this analysis sheds light on several implications regarding peace education as a controversial issue and teachers’ freedom of speech in the classroom, these implications are presented for teacher educators in the final section. While scrutinizing the challenging nature of present public schooling through Ms Butera’s struggles, the study uncovers the possibilities of peace education practices even in an oppressive system of schooling through robust teacher education programmes equipping teachers with powerful skills and capabilities required for transformative educators.
