Evaluating the effects of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on distance education applications in higher education is important for future practice. In this context, the aim of the study is to determine preservice mathematics teachers’ conceptual-procedural knowledge level competencies and general thoughts about distance education in the distance education probability course in the department of mathematics teaching. In the study, a questionnaire consisting of 18 questions was prepared in the light of the literature as a data collection tool for 52 preservice mathematics teachers who took the probability course with distance education in the 2020-2021 academic year. After the implementations, one-to-one interviews were made with the lecturer conducting the course. The data of the study were analysed with the descriptive analysis method. As a result, it was determined that the conceptual-operative knowledge of the preservice mathematics teachers in the probability course in the distance education process was at a medium level. Although it was determined that the participation in online lessons was quite low compared to the lessons taught face-to-face, the preservice teachers mostly followed the lessons from asynchronous recordings, but there was no low performance or unwillingness in the preservice teachers who attended the lessons online. It has been determined that the biggest problem with distance education is the internet access and the low reliability of evaluation process. To increase the reliability, it has been determined that the transition to camera-controlled exams and the use of the safe exam browser (SEB) have been introduced.

With Microsoft’s motion sensor Kinect and a customized 3-axis pan-tilt-roll machinery connected together, a new intelligent sensing and tracking system comes into being. In order to simulate human natural visual sensing behavior, this system adopts the sensing function from Kinect placed upon the 3-axis motion machinery, controlled by a proposed expert PID control algorithm based on the adaptive Kalman filter, so as to guarantee automatic real-time visual tracking and to observe human movements and receive his/her position information. Experimental results indicate that this new system is capable of tracking one individual’s real-time movements with relatively high accuracy. Though this system is designed to be applied directly to distance education, it has great potential of functioning as a basic platform where many other human-computer natural interactions can be extended.

Purpose: Mobile technologies provide an affordable and easily accessible technology that lecturers can use effectively to assist students with their studies. The general objective of the study was to evaluate influence of mobile phone on enhancing learner support services for distance education programmes. Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: From the study findings,it was concluded that most students have a smartphone and have installed applications that enable them to access the internet, but they ended up using their phones for social network and not learning purposes. Despite the fact that the phones are able to check and send emails, majority of those interviewed preferred using the computer over the phone. Most students and lecturers did not communicate over the phone in case of clarity on a certain subject even the sending of results, missing marks and such. Most administrators sent SMS regarding important dates and venues to DE students but rarely and did not send results through SMS, do not send SMS on tutorial schedules and never sent SMS giving reminders about deadlines for submitting assignments to DE students Recommendations: The study recommended that there was a need for the universities and colleges not utilizing mobile phones should develop common email center that does not compromise privacy of the users. The service should be of high speed and able to support large data exchange. The universities should establish common social media network by registering on leading social network such as facebook or google+. The common social platform center should be administratively controlled to monitor the exchange of information for purposes of learning and support. The knowledge and scientific understanding accruing from this study should be considered by policy makers when laying down guidelines for learner support systems in distance education programmes

The combination of immersive virtual reality (VR) environments and distance education has led to a new educational paradigm. In this study, an immersive VR-based distance education system is proposed to enable multiple remote users to send, share, and experience images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) via streaming. In contrast to the conventional system in which only experts use SDO data, the proposed system provides a head-mounted-display-based visualization platform that can be easily used by experts and non-experts. Real-time SDO image streaming must be possible to realistically observe changes in the Sun and increase involvement. Thus, multichannel-based SDO image transmission was applied to increase the network bandwidth utilization. To improve the social presence of participants, realistic avatar models controlled by the motions synchronized with the user are provided. In addition, free communication is possible through verbal interactions. This allows multiple remote users to participate simultaneously without having to be physically present. A user study with 20 subjects showed that the participants could observe SDO images in a more immersive manner by using the proposed system. In addition, they experienced social presence because of the user avatar models and an enriched educational experience by conversing with and listening to experts.

In observational epidemiology it is usual to select a control group to study the effects of certain exposures on human health. Intervention studies are well known among epidemiologists but it is not very frequent in other areas of research. In this paper we propose the same idea of intervention studies and the use of three methods for a health promotion research control group selection: Propensity score, Mahalanobis' distance and Mahalanobis within Propensity Calipers. In the original project, "Health and Local Development: a progress review towards the millennium goals with relation to health in the Brazilian cities which develop social agendas", cities with social agendas from Brazil were matched separately by state. In the state of Paraná there are 397 cities. Of these, 34 presented social agendas implemented and active since, at least, 2004. Five variables measured in 2000 were considered for the matching: population size, human development index of income, human development index of education, percentage of literacy and vaccine coverage. As a result, among these three methods, the Mahalanobis by itself was considered the less efficient. In conclusion, the propensity, which is a very simple linear score, presented very good matched sample. However, the Mahalanobis within Calipers was the method that provided the best result.

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise plus patient therapeutic education on perceived fatigue, functional capacity and pain in breast cancer survivors with cancer-related fatigue. A randomised, single-blind, clinical trial was conducted with a total of 80 breast cancer survivors who presented cancer-related fatigue. Women were randomised into a supervised therapeutic exercise group (STE-G) (n = 40) or an unsupervised exercise group (UE-G) (n = 40). Both interventions included patient therapeutic education and were delivered in three sessions per week over eight weeks. The main outcome was perceived fatigue as assessed by the Spanish version of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue subscale (FACIT-F). Other evaluated outcomes were pain measured on a visual analogue scale, and distance measured using the 6-Minute Walk Test. Data were collected at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at three and six months after baseline. Significantly greater improvements across all variables were observed in the STE-G throughout the entire follow-up period with the exception of pain. Conclusions: A supervised therapeutic exercise program plus patient therapeutic education significantly reduce perceived fatigue and increase functional capacity in breast cancer survivors suffering from cancer-related fatigue compared to an unsupervised physical exercise program based on individual preferences with patient therapeutic education.

The effectiveness of advanced professional training for a teacher of Russian as the second language is possible only based on the complex use of modern distance learning technologies that are aimed at usage in a specific subject area and reflect its specifics as adequately as possible. This article summarizes the results of project activities on the formation of a system of advanced professional education for teachers of Russian as the second language, carried out at the premises of The Kosygin State University of Russia. The project aimed to develop strategies for creating an integrated system of distance support, including 1) a model of an electronic educational environment based on cloud technologies and representing a secure solution in a controlled segment of the Internet, capable of accumulating resources for teaching the Russian language in Russia and abroad; 2) a system of diagnostic measures to identify the competence gaps of RSL (Russian as the Second Language) teachers in the subject, organizational, methodological, psychological spheres; 3) recommendations for the creation of advanced training programs (modules) capable of eliminating the identified competence deficiency in these areas. The following can be considered as objectives of the project: 1) selection of distance technologies (elements of distance technologies), relevant for use in the process of professional training of an RSL teacher; 2) formation of a cluster of diagnostic measures; 3) modeling educational content; 4) determination of cognitive strategies for teaching and self-education of an RSL teacher in the system of advanced professional training. The system of diagnostic measures described in the work assumed the assessment (measurement) of the teacher’s activities in three aspects: 1) from the standpoint of subject knowledge, 2) from the organizational and methodological standpoint, 3) from the psychological standpoint. This approach made it possible to single out the components of professional competencies and form a methodology for expert assessment of the educational environment, including the Russian-speaking educational environment abroad. In this case, the instrument of pedagogical measurement was testing carried out remotely on the constantly operating platform of The Kosygin State University of Russia at https://edu.rguk.ru.

In this study, we hypothesize that the worldwide distribution of cognitive ability is determined in part by variation in the intensity of infectious diseases. From an energetics standpoint, a developing human will have difficulty building a brain and fighting off infectious diseases at the same time, as both are very metabolically costly tasks. Using three measures of average national intelligence quotient (IQ), we found that the zero-order correlation between average IQ and parasite stress ranges from r = −0.76 to r = −0.82 ( p < 0.0001). These correlations are robust worldwide, as well as within five of six world regions. Infectious disease remains the most powerful predictor of average national IQ when temperature, distance from Africa, gross domestic product per capita and several measures of education are controlled for. These findings suggest that the Flynn effect may be caused in part by the decrease in the intensity of infectious diseases as nations develop.

The article reveals a theoretical and empirical study of the social distance symbolic scale expressing “in-group” – “out-group” perceptions, expressed in the oppositions “Russia” – “West”, “Russian men – Western men”. According to our observations, the opposition has a negative connotation, which is expressed in a system of geopolitical and mental biases. Through systematic analysis of the geopolitical and mental distancing phenomenon, a complementary system for evaluating individual and collective representations of Russian-speaking respondents in real and virtual spaces is proposed. The authors conducted a controlled Internet survey of 600 people based on a quota sample by gender, age, and level of education; the structure of the sample allowed for a comparative study in the form of a nonreactive study within10 largest ethnic Russian communities of the social network “VKontakte”. As a result of a comprehensive study, it is established, in particular, that the opposition “Russia – West” is unchanged in the historical perspective from 1995 to 2020 and shows negative dynamics, over time acquiring the traits of an increasingly tough confrontation. Economic perceptions of the West’s attitude towards Russia are replaced mainly by the geopolitical perception of relations, due to the dominant “power” attitudes of the survey participants. As it turned out on an empirical level, the system of traditional values inherent in Russian society is opposed to Western postmodern values, and the image of the state at the level of value representations directly correlates with the image of the people, whose perception, along with geopolitics, is influenced by various cultural norms that distinguish Russians from Europeans. The gender and age characteristics of the survey participants determine the content of the answers to a minimal extent, which indirectly indicates the integrity of the image of the West at the level of the national identity of Russians.

Background The traditional process of surgical education is being increasingly challenged by economic constraints and concerns about patient safety. Sophisticated computer-based devices have become available to simulate the surgical experience in a protected environment. As with any new educational tool, these devices have generated controversy about the validity of the training experience. Hypothesis Performance on a virtual reality simulator correlates with actual surgical experience. Study Design Controlled laboratory study. Methods Forty-three test subjects of various experience levels in shoulder arthroscopy were tested on an arthroscopy simulator according to a standardized protocol. Subjects were evaluated for time to completion, distance traveled with the tip of the simulated probe compared with a computer-determined optimal distance, average probe velocity, and number of probe collisions with the tissues. Results Subjects were grouped according to prior experience with shoulder arthroscopy. Comparing the least experienced with most experienced groups, the average time to completion decreased by 62% from 128.8 seconds to 49.2 seconds; path length and hook collisions were more than halved from 8.2 to 3.8 and 34.1 to 16.8, respectively; and average probe velocity more than doubled from 0.18 to 0.4 cm/second. There were no significant differences for any parameter tested between subjects with video game experience compared to those without. Conclusions The study demonstrated a close and statistically significant correlation between simulator results and surgical experience, thus confirming the hypothesis. Conversely, experience with video games was not associated with improved simulator performance. This indicates that the skill set tested may be similar to the one developed in the operating room, thus suggesting its use as a potential tool for future evaluation of surgical trainees. Clinical Relevance The results have implications for the future of orthopaedic surgical training programs, the majority of which have not embraced virtual reality technology for physician education.

Background Truck drivers in sub-Saharan Africa are at high risk for both mental health disorders and sexually transmitted infections. We sought to determine the prevalence of depression among a sample of long-distance truck drivers seeking services at roadside wellness clinics in Kenya and explore the relationship between depression and sexual risk behavior. Methods We used data from an interviewer-administered questionnaire from 284 truck drivers in Kenya who participated in a randomized controlled trial evaluating whether offering oral HIV self-testing could increase HIV test uptake. Depression was categorized based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score, with a score ≥10 indicative of probable major depressive disorder (MDD). Sexual risk behavior was operationalized as the number of condomless sex partners in the past 6 months. Results The mean participant age was 36.9 years, 83.0% were married, and 37.0% had a secondary school education or higher. Overall, 24% of participants had probable MDD, and 58.2% reported having one condomless sex partner in the past 6 months, whereas 27.3% reported having had two or more. In a multivariable Poisson regression model adjusted for demographic and other relevant variables, including number of sex partners, MDD was significantly associated with a greater number of condomless sex partners (adjusted prevalence ratio 1.63, 95% confidence interval [1.25–2.12], p < 0.001). General self-efficacy significantly mediated the association between MDD and number of condomless sex partners. Conclusions The high prevalence of depression highlights the need to test the feasibility and acceptability of mental healthcare interventions for this population, possibly integrated with HIV prevention services. Future research is needed to better understand the association between depression and sexual risk behavior, as well as the role of self-efficacy.

Abstract Introduction Due to the Covid-19 social distancing restrictions, in March 2020, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar decided to replace students’ clinical instruction with novel online electives. Hence, we implemented an innovative online and remote pathology curriculum, anchored on virtual microscopy and Zoom videoconferencing: ideal tools to support online teaching. Objective To assess a new curriculum implementation at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar. Materials and Methods This for-credit, 2-week elective included 6 synchronous Zoom sessions where complex clinicopathological cases were discussed in small groups. We used open access digital microscopy slides from the University of Leeds’ Virtual Pathology Library (http://www.virtualpathology.leeds.ac.uk/slides/library/). Students independently prepared for these sessions by reviewing cases, slides, readings, and questions in advance (asynchronous self-directed learning anchored on a flipped classroom model), and wrote a final review of a case. An assessment and feedback were given to each student. Results Four elective iterations were offered to a total of 29 students, with learners and faculty spread over 4 countries. During the Zoom sessions, students controlled the digital slides and offered their own diagnoses, followed by group discussions to strengthen autonomy and confidence. We surveyed learners about the elective’s performance (program evaluation). Students conveyed high levels of satisfaction about the elective’s overall quality, their pathology learning and online interactions, with minimal challenges related to the remote nature of the course. Discussion and Conclusions Technological innovations mitigate sudden disruptions in medical education. A remote curriculum allows instruction at any distance, at any time, from anywhere, enhancing educational exchanges, flexibility and globalization in medical education.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) develops chronically and progressively, causes recurrence and premature death, so a good knowledge of changes in self-care behavior by patients is needed. Telenursing can be a medium for health education to allow patients to receive information and for nurses to follow up on health conditions without being obstructed by distance, place, time, and carried out sustainably. So far, telenursing has not been reviewed as a recent intervention to deliver education to CAD patients. AIM: This systematic review aimed to determine the effectiveness of health education interventions with telenursing on the self-care of CAD patients based on the implementation media. METHODS: Systematic reviews were conducted based on items found in CINAHL EBSCO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar from 2008 to 2019. The combination of keywords used Indonesian and English language. All articles were assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool for randomized controlled trial (RCT) and quasi-experiment. After that, the study found was synthesized narratively. RESULTS: A total of 11.319 titles were identified, and seven studies met inclusion criteria with 3313 participants. Six studies were RCT studies, and one was a quasi-experimental study. The results of the narrative synthesis conducted on seven articles showed that health education by telenursing was effective in improving self-care ability, such as maintaining blood pressure, body mass index, hemoglobin A1c levels, fasting blood glucose, and low-density lipoprotein within normal limits. In addition, there was also an increase in physical activity, dietary compliance (consumption of fruits, vegetables and fish), control of salt intake, smoking, and alcohol cessation. The media used were phone calls and text messages. CONCLUSION: This review provides evidence that health education interventions effectively improve the self-care abilities of CAD patients with the media used are text messages and telephone calls.

AbstractObjectiveWe examined psychological outcomes in a sample of participants who evacuated from the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2011. This study aimed to identify risk factors for psychological injury that might be amenable to change, thereby reducing adverse impacts associated with emergency high-rise evacuation.MethodsWe used data from a cross-sectional survey conducted 2 years after the attacks to classify 789 evacuees into 3 self-reported psychological outcome categories: long-term psychological disorder diagnosed by a physician, short-term psychological disorder and/or memory problems, and no known psychological disorder.ResultsAfter nonmodifiable risk factors were controlled for, diagnosed psychological disorder was more likely for evacuees who reported lower “emergency preparedness safety climate” scores, more evacuation challenges (during exit from the towers), and evacuation-related physical injuries. Other variables associated with increased risk of psychological disorder outcome included gender (female), lower levels of education, preexisting physical disability, preexisting psychological disorder, greater distance to final exit, and more information sources during egress.ConclusionsImproving the “emergency preparedness safety climate” of high-rise business occupancies and reducing the number of egress challenges are potential strategies for reducing the risk of adverse psychological outcomes of high-rise evacuations. Focused safety training for individuals with physical disabilities is also warranted. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2017;11:326–336)

Background: Maintaining physical distance, washing hands, and wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic are very important in preventing the spread of the virus. However, although the use of facemasks is relatively easy to do, its compliance is considered low. Objective: This study aimed to analyze compliance in wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 residents in Palembang, Indonesia, selected using simple random sampling from August to September 2021. Data were collected using online questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, and multivariate using logistic regression. Results: The findings revealed that sex, education, and employment status were significant relationships to compliance to wearing masks (p0.05), but age and family income were not significantly related (p0.05). Multivariate analysis showed only perceived severity and cues to action had a significant relationship with compliance to wearing masks after it was controlled by the sex variable (p0.05), with PR of 0.558 (95% CI 0.331-0.941) and 0.410 (95% CI 0.242-0.696), consecutively. Conclusion: Perceived severity and cues to action are factors that influence compliance to wearing masks. Therefore, these two factors should be considered by public health practitioners as well as the government to increase the compliance wearing masks.

“International Msc Educational Programme in Environmental Management and Modelling” (GeoNetC) is a European Commission funded project under ERASMUS+: Higher Education – International Capacity Building programme (Project No 561967-EPP-1-2015-1-SE-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP). It began in October 2015 and ended in October 2018. Initiated by the Lund University and partners from the Middle East countries, the GeoNetC project is an ambitious project aiming to match labour market needs with geospatial education offer both in Europe and Middle East countries. The aim of this three-year project is to enable European universities to exchange best practices and innovation with each other and with Middle Eastern universities regarding the mismatch between Europe’s geospatial education and training and the geospatial education in Middle East countries. There is a growing need for well-trained students at all levels – vocational, bachelors, masters – in the field of geospatial technologies. Obviously there is a growing number of jobs available in land surveying, mapping data collection, data processing, data delivery and turning data into information in both European and Middle East countries. Through cooperation, all partners will improve the quality of their respective academic programs. The European partners will make their courses more attractive and well adjusted for students from the Middle East. As well, they will increase the general quality and add state-of-the-art learning components to their offerings, and the partners from the region will significantly increase the academic level and quality in the education they provide. There will be spin-offs into other subjects than environment/Geomatics, since both the pedagogic models developed (e.g. e-Learning) and communication and administrative tools can be used throughout the partner universities. Therefore, this partnership cooperation will be of great value to Partner Countries as well as to Programme Countries. A number of distance learning courses/modules are developed jointly by partner institutions in Europe and the Middle East. The main aim of the network is to promote the use of spatial information and earth observation for environmental management and modelling through capacity building and institutional development, via a network in which all partners would contribute from their own positions of strength. All 13 modules are following EU higher education standards regarding e.g. ECTS, and learning outcomes. The outcome of the project, in terms of courses/modules, will be freely used among the partners, with the possibilities of offering individual courses or a whole MSc programme, whether individually or together. All produced material was evaluated/quality controlled by an external evaluation group of independent experts within environmental management and modelling, higher education, as well as pedagogy.

In this paper I analyzed the Spanish - speaking Caribbean´s dialectal perceptions (Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans), in order to know the mental delimitation of the linguistic area to which their varieties are circumscribed, the elements through which they distinguish it and the way in which they perceived themselves linguistically in the Spanish-speaking context in general. The analysis has been based on the postulates of Perceptual Dialectology. From the methodological point of view, a questionnaire was applied in the capitals of the three countries in which four questions addressed the linguistic perceptions. The sample was formed from a fixed quota sampling, for a total of 198 informants surveyed in the three countries, of which the variables sex, age and level of education were controlled. Some of the most important concluding ideas of the study are that the Antillean perceive their varieties of Spanish as inserted in a common dialectal space, although with variable limits. In a triangle of relationships, Puerto Ricans and Cubans perceive their respective varieties of Spanish as much closer and more like each other than to the Spanish in the Dominican Republic. Dominicans, on the other hand, show a weaker awareness of the link between the three varieties. As for the differentiating perceptions, is evident a perceptual distance from other variants (such as the Spanish, Colombian, Mexican and Argentine), based on arguments that show the prestige granted to these modalities of language.

It is known that the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites are controlled by the conditions of contact between the fiber and the matrix. In this regard, great efforts of mechanics are directed to developing various techniques to improve the quality of the interface. The most common are: modification of the fiber surface, improvement of chemical interactions, or the addition of a third phase (interfacial layer) between the fiber and the matrix. The most common are: modification of the fiber surface, improvement of chemical interactions, or a third phase (interfacial layer) between the fiber and the matrix. In this study, the authors aim to examine the effective dynamic properties of a whiskered layer of fibers in modified composites, taking into account the structural characteristics of the interfacial layer – its thickness – length of whiskers, volumetric content of whiskers, and their mechanical properties. The dynamic performance of the whiskered layer surrounding the base fiber in modified composites was estimated. The whiskered layer is considered a fibrous composite formed by nanoscale whiskers grown on the surface and a matrix. An epoxy binder or a viscoelastic polymer is considered as a matrix. An approximate model was used. The effective characteristics of the whiskered layer were modeled and determined as the properties of a transversally isotropic fibrous system with the isotropy axis coinciding with nanowhiskers in the whiskered layer. A feature of the whiskered layer is that the density of whiskers varies with distance from the fiber surface. Therefore, it depends on the length of the nanowhiskers (the thickness of the interfacial layer). In this case, it turns out that the bulk for the matrix in the whiskered layer, even at the maximum density of nanowhiskers grown on the fiber surface and for sufficiently thin interfacial layers, is very significant. Fuzzy fiber composite, nanofibers, epoxy binder, damping properties.

ObjectivesNeurogenic claudication due to lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a growing health problem in older adults. We updated our previous Cochrane review (2013) to determine the effectiveness of non-operative treatment of LSS with neurogenic claudication.DesignA systematic review.Data sourcesCENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Index to Chiropractic Literature databases were searched and updated up to 22 July 2020.Eligibility criteriaWe only included randomised controlled trials published in English where at least one arm provided data on non-operative treatment and included participants diagnosed with neurogenic claudication with imaging confirmed LSS.Data extraction and synthesisTwo independent reviewers extracted data and assessed risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 1. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used for evidence synthesis.ResultsOf 15 200 citations screened, 156 were assessed and 23 new trials were identified. There is moderate-quality evidence from three trials that: Manual therapy and exercise provides superior and clinically important short-term improvement in symptoms and function compared with medical care or community-based group exercise; manual therapy, education and exercise delivered using a cognitive-behavioural approach demonstrates superior and clinically important improvements in walking distance in the immediate to long term compared with self-directed home exercises and glucocorticoid plus lidocaine injection is more effective than lidocaine alone in improving statistical, but not clinically important improvements in pain and function in the short term. The remaining 20 new trials demonstrated low-quality or very low-quality evidence for all comparisons and outcomes, like the findings of our original review.ConclusionsThere is moderate-quality evidence that a multimodal approach which includes manual therapy and exercise, with or without education, is an effective treatment and that epidural steroids are not effective for the management of LSS with neurogenic claudication. All other non-operative interventions provided insufficient quality evidence to make conclusions on their effectiveness.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42020191860.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Moringa oleifera leaf extract supplements, Moringa oleifera leaf extract plus royal jelly and placebo on hemoglobin levels in anemic pregnant women. This research is a randomized controlled double blind design study which was conducted in Polombangkeng Utara District, Takalar Regency for 2 months. The subjects of this study were pregnant women with anemia, the majority of which were 20-35 years old, primigravida parity, income less than UMR, unemployment, higher education, pregnancy distance of more than 2 years with p value> 0.05. Then divided into three groups, namely Moringa capsules plus royal jelly (KRJ) (n = 24), Moringa capsules (KTR) (n = 24) and placeco (PLC) (n = 21). Before and after the intervention, measurements of hemoglobin levels were carried out using the Hemocue tool and interviewing the characteristics of the respondents. The results showed that the average Hb level increased from each group (mean SD): KRJ 10.06 ± 0.75 to 11.42 ± 1.23, P = 0.001, KTR 10.40 ± 0.46 to 11.15 ± 0 , 90 P = 0.001 and PLC 10.43 ± 0.42 becomes 11.14 ± 0.88 P = 0.002. but there was no significant difference from the difference in the average increase in Hb levels in the three groups, but there was a tendency that KRJ was superior to the KTR and PLC groups with an increase of 1.36 gr / dl, KTR 0.75 gr / dl and PLC 0.71 gr / dl. So it can be concluded that KRJ is better than KTR and PLC in increasing Hb levels in anemic pregnant women in Takalar Regency.

Archival data were used to examine the feasibility of a 5-day, clinic-based, intensive exposure–based cognitive-behavioral group therapy for childhood anxiety disorders (CADs) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Participants were 143 children (82 girls) aged 6 to 19 years ( M = 13.93 years, SD = 2.9 years) with CADs or OCD (or both) in 28 consecutive groups. Repeated-measures ANOVA in the subsample ( n = 57) with complete treatment data indicated positive change on all variables from pretreatment to posttreatment with few differences between CADs and OCD patients. Effect sizes were moderate to large for anxiety symptoms (parent reported = 0.74, child reported = 0.65) and impairment (parent reported = 1.02, child reported = 0.69). The intensive group protocol required fewer sessions and 36% fewer therapist-hours per patient than the individually administered protocol. The program increased treatment availability for families from diverse geographic areas ( M distance traveled to clinic = 407 miles, SD = 786.4 miles). These findings support further, well-controlled examination of the 5-day intensive group treatment protocol’s efficacy and potential to increase availability of evidence-based exposure therapy.

This paper presents the process of designing, fabricating, assembling, programming and optimizing a prototype nonlinear mechatronic Ball-Plate System (BPS) as a laboratory platform for engineering education STEM. Due to the nonlinearity and complexity of BPS, the task presents challenges such as: (1) difficulty in controlling the stabilization of a particular position point, known as steady-state error, (2) position resolution, known as specific distance error, and (3) adverse environmental effects—light-shadow error, which is also discussed in this paper. The laboratory prototype BPS for education was designed, manufactured and installed at Karlovac University of Applied Sciences in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics program. The low-cost two-degree BPS uses a USB HD camera for computer vision as a feedback sensor and two DC servo motors as actuators. Due to control problems, an advanced block diagram of the control system is proposed and discussed. An open-source control system based on Python scripts, which allows the use of ready-made functions from the library, allows the color of the ball and the parameters of the PID controller to be changed, indirectly simplifying the control system and performing mathematical calculations directly. The authors will continue their research on this BPS mechatronic platform and control algorithms.

Abstract When the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic caused schools across the country to close their classrooms, colleges and universities shifted to online education. Just as many professional spaces had to adjust to working from home, so did students and professors. Many higher education institutions had to find novel solutions to tackle the challenge of hands-on education and rethink what the classroom could be in a virtual and digital environment.

ObjectivesWe aimed to assess mobility patterns and reasons for high mobility among young women engaged in sex work within a randomised controlled trial to gauge how mobility may hinder access to health services and enhance HIV risk in a highly vulnerable population.SettingParticipants were recruited from a clinic in Kampala, Uganda set up for women at high risk of HIV infection.ParticipantsAdolescent girls and young women engaged in sex for money and/or commodities are at particular risk in countries with high HIV prevalence and high fertility rates. High mobility increases exposure to HIV risk. Women participants were eligible for the parent study if aged 15–24 years, HIV negative and engaged in sex work. For this substudy, 34 qualitative interviews were held with 14 sex workers (6 HIV positive, 8 HIV negative), 6 health worker/policy makers, 3 peer educators, 5 ‘queen mothers’ and 6 male partnersMeasuresParticipants used Google Maps to identify work venues at 12-month and 18-month study visits. We also conducted 34 interviews on mobility with: high-risk women, male partners, health workers and sex-worker managers. Topics included: distance, frequency and reasons for mobility. We used Python software to analyse mapping data.ResultsInterviews found in depth narratives describing lack of education and employment opportunities, violence, lack of agency, social, sexual and familial support networks and poverty as a complex web of reasons for high mobility among young sex workers.ConclusionsYoung women at high risk are highly mobile. Reasons for mobility impact access and retention to health services and research activities. OBJECTIVE: To introduce readers to the use of pentoxifylline for diabetes-induced peripheral vascular disease. The article provides background on the pathophysiology of diabetic foot ulcers as well as a review of the literature on the therapeutic use of pentoxifylline for treating this disorder. DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search was used to identify pertinent literature, including review articles and case reports. Key index terms included pentoxifylline, diabetic foot ulcer, neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, and intermittent claudication DATA EXTRACTION: Basic pharmacologic data regarding absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion were reported in normal subjects as well as in patients with renal impairment. Open and controlled clinical trials also were analyzed; subjective symptoms were reported. The economic implications also were reported. The pharmacist's role in patient education is discussed. DATA SYNTHESIS: Pentoxifylline 800 mg/d was found to be effective in improving the symptoms in patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, including improvement in walking distance, paresthesia, skin temperature, and subjective overall response. In nondiabetic patients, statistically significant differences in leg-ulcer healing were found between the treatment and placebo groups. Case reports illustrated healing times, which ranged from two weeks to six months. Pentoxifylline use in both insulin-dependent and noninsulin-dependent patients was assessed in clinical trials, with improvement of symptoms in both patient types. CONCLUSIONS: Studies show that pentoxifylline is an alternative to vascular surgery in the management of peripheral vascular disease in diabetic patients, particularly in those with chronic ulceration of the lower extremities that does not heal despite other optimal treatment regimens, including cessation of smoking, maintenance of normoglycemia, elimination of vasoconstrictive drugs, correctly fitted shoes, and appropriate wound care. Pentoxifylline therapy may provide an appropriate, economical treatment modality by reducing the need for hospitalization and vascular surgery.

Introduction / Innovation Concept: Orbital compartment syndrome (OCS) is a vision threatening ocular emergency that occurs when there is a sudden rise in orbital pressure resulting in damage to intraocular structures. Lateral canthotomy and cantholysis (LCC) is a simple procedure used to decompress the orbit. Emergency physicians should be comfortable evaluating and diagnosing OCS, and performing a LCC to decrease the risk of vision loss in the event that consultation and intervention by an ophthalmologist is not possible in a timely manner. Developing this skill is challenging as this procedure is seldom performed, therefore resources need to be available. Current training videos are an excellent learning tool but are limited by several factors, such as not capturing from the perspective of the physician performing the procedure. Point-of-view (POV) cameras show the physician’s perspective, which is more conducive to training as it mimics the experience for trainees. We report our novel technique of recording a LCC using a head-mounted POV camera as a resource for emergency physician trainees in learning this procedure. Methods: We used a head mounted POV GoPro Hero 4 Silver camera (GoPro, San Mateo, CA, U.S.A.) with a modified 5.4mm f/2.5 aftermarket lens with a 60° field of view (Peau Productions Inc, San Diego, CA, U.S.A.). This lens was pre-focused to a working distance of 17 inches, set to 1080P on narrow recording at 48 frames per second, and had spot metering and the low light functions turned on. The camera functions were controlled remotely by an assistant with the use of GoPro App on a tablet computer to ensure proper framing of the camera. Curriculum, Tool, or Material: Our novel use of a POV camera for recording LCC is an efficient, cost effective tool useful for medical education at an academic institution as well as a valuable resource for emergency room clinicians. The POV recording system can be a training device in an emergency setting for performing a LCC or other procedures that emergency physicians may seldom encounter. Conclusion: Point-of-view cameras have great potential in assisting the education at the post-graduate level within residency training programs. Video recording from the physician’s perspective simulates the experience for trainees and could leave them feeling more confident in their ability to perform the procedure.

BACKGROUND: JiTT screencasts are effective teaching tools in some medical educational settings, but have not yet been evaluated for trainees on an inpatient adult hematology-oncology service (HOS). Our preceding pilot data identified six high-yield topics for this setting: venous thromboembolism, oncologic emergencies, sickle cell disease, hematologic emergencies, brain metastases, and spinal metastases. This study objective was to determine if the addition of educational screencasts on these six topics would be an effective educational intervention for trainees on a busy HOS. METHODS: All internal medicine residents scheduled to start a rotation on an HOS were eligible. Participants underwent block randomization to the usual educational curriculum either with screencast access (treatment) or without it (control). Allocation was concealed but participants were not blinded. Upon completion of the rotation, all participants received an anonymous online survey about their experiences. The primary outcome was the change in attitude among learners, measured as their self-reported confidence for managing the clinical topics that were covered. All randomized participants received a $20 gift certificate upon completion of the study. Exploratory data was also collected from medical students, fellows, and faculty who opted to participate; they were given access to the screencasts without randomization. RESULTS: Over the 29 week study period (12/9/2019 - 6/30/2020), 67 out of 78 eligible residents (86%) opted to participate; these 67 residents all underwent randomization and were analyzed by intention-to-treat. Enrollment continued to completion of the study. The final participant response rate was high at 91%. Demographic characteristics were well-matched between the arms with the exception of a higher prevalence of male gender (72% vs. 42%, p=0.022) in the screencast arm. The majority (64%) of residents in the screencast arm rated their clinical management comfort level as either "comfortable" or "very comfortable" as compared to just 21% of residents in the usual education arm (p = 0.0008), estimated difference = 43%, (95% CI 21%,66%) using a prespecified cumulative cutoff score. Nearly all participants on the screencast arm either agreed or strongly agreed that the screencasts improved their knowledge base in medical oncology (100%), will improve their care for cancer patients (92%), and enjoyed the format (96%). Most participants on the screencast arm felt that the intervention was optimal in terms of content (96%), length (82%), and accessibility (63%). Preferred viewing speed for the screencasts was 1.5x (52%). Nearly all participants felt that a similar database of screencasts would be helpful for all of their clinical rotations (96%). Medical knowledge as tested by a series of 6 clinical vignette multiple-choice questions was not different between the screencast and control arms (percentage correct: 77% vs. 80%, p=0.56). Burnout as tested by the Maslach Burnout Inventory was not different between the screencast and control arms in terms of total score (71 ± 12 vs. 69 ± 13, p=0.67) or personal accomplishment subscale (46 vs. 45, p=0.71). Exploratory data was also collected from 6 medical students, 8 fellows, and 6 attendings. Half of the students (50%) recommended the screencasts for the IM clerkship. Most fellows and faculty were neutral as to their interest in producing their own educational screencasts (77%) or contributing to a similar project (54%). CONCLUSIONS Resident trainees on a busy inpatient adult hematology-oncology service (HOS) found that a JiTT screencast series increased their clinical comfort level in the management of critical and commonly encountered patient problems unique to the HOS. The screencast content and delivery was overwhelmingly positive with nearly all (96%) wanting screencast series to be created for all their clinical rotations. Furthermore, as evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, novel distance and asynchronous learning platforms may be of increasing importance when traditional in-person methods are not feasible. AIMS: In this article, we want to share our perspective on how simulation sessions could contribute to change reality, building a safe environment in which facilitators can role-modeling students to develop emotional competence. Noteworthy, acknowledging and legitimating emotions are also essential components of creating a safe environment for students. We also intend to stress how faculty development programs are essential to guarantee that facilitators will be prepared to accomplish this new learning goal, and how different cultural contexts can influence the process.METHODS: In this narrative review, we will focus on the importance of emotions. Emotions in the context of learning but also learners’ emotions from the viewpoint of teachers, and teachers’ emotions in the context of faculty development.RESULTS: Simulation in medical education is becoming increasingly important. Advances in technology give many opportunities to simulate almost anything you want, with high fidelity and enhanced reality. It creates the possibility of bringing the complexity of real clinical tasks to a controlled simulated environment. While performing these complex simulated tasks, students experience several and sometimes distinct emotions: the emotions of patients and their families, the emotions of the multi-professional team members, and their own emotions, as learners and as future health professionals. Unfortunately, the formal curricula of the majority of medical schools do not address the importance of emotional competence specifically, and students end with the general impression that emotions are mainly negative, and must be avoided and kept at a safe distance. However, there are plenty of data showing how emotions can influence learning and decision-making, and how important it is to create awareness of and modulate them to guarantee the safeguard of patients’ interests.CONCLUSIONS: Emotions directly affect several dimensions of clinical work, such as communication, decision-making, teamwork, and leadership. We hope that including dealing with emotions as a natural goal of the learning activities in the health professions can catalyze the reconciliation between the technical and emotional aspects of clinical practice.

176 Background: Esophageal cancer is an examplar model of complex cancer care with defined quality of life (QOL) consequences. While prognosis for this aggressive disease is poor, survival is slowly improving leading to the emergence of a unique group of cancer survivors with complex rehabilitation needs. The ReStOre trial will implement a multi-disciplinary programme to improve functional performance and QOL for esophageal cancer survivors. This pilot work examines the feasibility of the proposed intervention. Methods: This study was a single-arm feasibility study. Patients who had completed curative treatment for esophageal cancer including esophagectomy and who had node-negative post-surgical pathology received a letter of invitation to participate. The programme consisted of 12 weeks supervised and home-based exercise, dietetic counselling and education sessions from the multi-disciplinary team. Feasibility outcomes included recruitment rates, adherence, adverse events and retention. Other outcomes, including cardiopulmonary fitness (maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test and six minute walk test (6MWT)), QOL (EORTC questionnaire) and body composition (bioimpedence analysis), were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: Twelve participants (mean (standard deviation (SD) age 61.4 (7.29) years, 8 male) consented to participate, representing a recruitment rate of 55%. Mean class attendance was 82% and mean adherence to the home exercise programme was 118%. No adverse events occurred and all participants completed programme. Aerobic fitness improved by 3.71(2.7) ml/kg/min (19.0 ml/kg/min pre-intervention, 22.7 ml/kg/min post-intervention, p < 0.001). 6MWT distance improved by 56.3 (35.3)m (p < 0.001). Global and functional QOL scores increased while symptom scores decreased. Body composition remained stable. Conclusions: The ReStOre trial demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability in this complex cohort. Improvements in functional performance and QOL were evident without compromise to body composition. While current results are limited due to the selected population and single-arm design they will guide the design of the forthcoming larger randomised controlled trial.

During a shot put, there are different finite variables that can be controlled by the thrower, including release angle, release height, release direction, and release velocity. Previous studies have determined thresholds of release velocity necessary for achieving certain distances, and this case study sought to expand upon that concept. Conclusions from key biomechanical data can make a significant difference in the performance of athletes in the shot put if properly understood by coaches. By utilizing this scientific approach to the shot put event, the throws coach will be able to determine more accurate adjustments and devise training stimuli to better accommodate the athlete. In this case study, researchers and the coach attempted to bridge the gap in the approach to teaching and coaching the glide shot put by using a physics-based equation regarding projectile motion in tandem with biomechanical analyses. The use of immediate feedback via video analysis was an essential part the coaching and teaching system. The athlete’s release angles decreased, and her maximum release velocities increased from 12.5 m/s in 2015 to 13.1 m/s in 2016. This USATF coaching education shot put project is an example in which the cooperation between sport science and coaching helped to produce an Olympic berth (19.24 m) by Felisha Johnson in the women’s shot put in 2016.

Background and purpose After an initial stroke, the risk of recurrent stroke is high. Models that implement best-practice recommendations for risk factor management in stroke survivors to prevent stroke recurrence remain elusive. We examined a model which focuses on vascular risk factor management to prevent stroke recurrence in survivors returning to their primary care physicians. This model is coordinated from the stroke unit, integrates specialist stroke services with primary care physicians, and directly involves patients and carers in risk factor management. It is underpinned by the shared care principle in which there is joint participation of specialists as well as primary care physicians in a planned, integrated delivery of care with ongoing involvement of patients and carers, a structure which encourages implementation of best-practice recommendations as well as transferability and sustainability. We hypothesized that an integrated, multimodal intervention based on a shared-care model which supports joint participation of stroke specialists and primary care physicians would improve the implementation of best-practice recommendations for risk factor management in stroke survivors returning to the community. Methods We undertook a double-blind randomized controlled trial, testing the model in three Australian cities using stroke survivors admitted to stroke units and discharged from hospital to return to their primary care physicians. The model was a shared care, multifaceted integrated program which included bidirectional feedback between general practitioner and specialist unit, education, and engagement of patient and carer in self-management with ongoing input from a multidisciplinary team. The primary endpoint was improvement or abolition of risk factors such as raised blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, the modification of adverse life-style factors such as lack of exercise, smoking and alcohol abuse and adherence to preventive medication at one year. Intermediate measurement points were scheduled at three monthly intervals. Analysis was by intention to treat, evaluated by covariance or a linear model adjusting for confounding factors or variance of base-line risk factors. The study was registered as ACTRN = 1261100026498. Results The study population was as follows: intervention ( n = 112), control ( n = 137). At baseline, there was no statistical difference between the groups for any variable. At the 12-month evaluation, there was a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure from baseline in the intervention group of 5.2 mmHg ( p < 0.01). This change was not observed in the control group ( p = 0.29). Moreover, at 12 months the mean systolic blood pressure in the intervention group was 129.4 mmHg (SD 14.7), a result which was not obtained in controls. Fasting total cholesterol as well as triglycerides was reduced significantly in the intervention group (both p < 0.01) but this was not the case in the control group ( p = 0.11 and p = 0.27, respectively). At 12 months, there was no change in BMI in the intervention group but there was a significant increase in BMI ( p = 0.02) in the control group. At 12 months in the intervention group, the mean distance walked with ease compared to the baseline measurements was increased by a mean distance of 600 m while in the control group the distance walked with ease was reduced compared to that measured at baseline. At 12 months, the Barthel index in the intervention group demonstrated improved function ( p = 0.01), but no change was observed in controls. At 12 months in the intervention group, there was a significant decrease in number of standard alcoholic drinks consumed per week compared to the baseline ( p = 0.04). This was not observed in the control group ( p = 0.34). Conclusion In stroke survivors, the ICARUSS (Integrated Care for the Reduction of Secondary Stroke) model is superior to usual care with respect to best-practice recommendations for traditional risk factors as well as behavioral and functional outcomes.

Abstract This paper outlines results from an online survey of recent distance graduates. The study, based in Dublin City University (DCU) addresses a gap in the research on this cohort of graduates. Findings indicate that distance graduates are primarily from lower socio economic backgrounds, a group largely under-represented in full-time university education. Significantly, 30% of survey respondents came from a skilled manual background. A large percentage (39% N = 61) of graduates had never accessed any form of higher education before. An equally large percentage (N = 62) had accessed full-time higher education previously, but at a lower level than the honours primary degree they obtained through distance learning. Implications regarding the role of distance education in improving access to university education and social mobility are discussed. Finally, this paper seeks to establish relevance between knowledge of distance graduates and doing things better for first time distance learners.

Abstract Introduction: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia transitioning from pediatric to adult health care experience a lack of engagement with adult care providers, are at high risk of loss to follow-up, emergence of psychosocial issues, morbidity and mortality. The shift from a pediatric to an adult setting can be challenging for AYA who are coping with multiple life transitions and are expected to acquire the necessary skills to manage their own care. Hypothesis: implementation of a comprehensive structured transition program with dedicated transition navigator (TN) in a pediatric and adult hemoglobinopathy comprehensive care center will reduce loss to follow-up and hospitalization, improve adherence to medication and attendance to appointments compared to an unstructured transfer from pediatric to adult program. Methods: A structured comprehensive transition program with a dedicated TN, based on a quality improvement framework with an iterative design to refine the intervention over time, was developed and deployed across a pediatric and adult hemoglobinopathy comprehensive care center (Hospital for Sick Children (HSC) and Toronto General Hospital (TGH) respectively) starting August 1, 2014. Prior to this, patients at age 18 were transferred without preparation. With the TN model, adolescents, from age 12 were followed at each visit by the TN and up to one year after transitioning. Prior to transition to the adult center, adolescents were seen jointly by pediatric and adult care providers and TN in a transition clinic. Patients were assessed for transition readiness and provided with tailored education at each appointment. This observational study compared all AYA with SCD or thalassemia who turned 18 years between August 1, 2013 and August 1, 2015. Patients in the cohort prior to the comprehensive transition program were compared to patients who transitioned through the formal program. Data from one year prior to last appointment at HSC and one year after the first appointment at TGH were collected. The effects of covariates on imaging/clinic/transfusion/subspecialist appointment attendance, medication adherence and hospitalizations were analyzed by multivariable regression. Results: 112 patients met the criteria for transfer/transition, of which 51 transferred prior to August 1, 2014 and 61 transitioned through the comprehensive transition program. No significant differences were observed in baseline demographics including age at transfer/transition, phenotype, distance from the center, medications, parental/guardian appointment attendance, immigration status, family structure, first language spoken or documented cognitive impairment. The youngest patient to undergo transition in the observation period was 16.6 years. The transition process significantly reduced the proportion of patients lost to follow-up from 29% (11/38) to 7% (4/57) (P = 0.0335, Figure 1). In patients who were on hydroxyurea or iron chelation, significant increase in the proportion of patients who maintained or improved their medication adherence to 4 or more days a week was observed in the transition cohort (P = 0.047, LR 4.668) and the presence of the transition program was independently associated with the improvement. A trend towards improvement or maintenance of ≥ 90% attendance to appointments was observed (P = 0.096, OR 2.254). Variations in appointment attendance can be explained by patient's age, distance from the comprehensive hemoglobinopathy center, and English as patient's first language. No independent predictor was found in frequency of hospitalization. No new overt strokes or deaths occurred in the year after moving to the adult center. Conclusions: Comprehensive structured transition program with dedicated transition navigator significantly reduced the number of AYA lost to follow-up, and significantly improved and maintained fair to good medication adherence. Further analysis of economic benefit and patient satisfaction will be conducted. A clustered randomized-controlled trial will be forthcoming to determine the effectiveness of this transition model of care on AYA patients with sickle cell disease on patient-important outcomes. Abstract The global diffusion of Internet involves economic, political and demographic factors that can predict in real time. In this article, we demonstrate that according to data provided by EUROSTAT, the number of people looking for a job in Romania it is correlated with specific query terms using Google Trends. Search engine data is used to “predict the present” values of different economic indicators. The obtained results are compared with the classical method of developing the economic indicators, with official EUROSTAT employment data. In this paper, we demonstrate that the new methods to extract the economic indicators from web technologies are accurate.
