Abstract Context X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is an inherited skeletal disorder that can lead to lifelong deleterious musculoskeletal and functional consequences. Although often perceived as a childhood condition, children and adults both experience the negative effects of XLH. Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) benefit from effective health care transition (HCT) preparation to support the transfer from pediatric- to adult-focused care. Whereas transition timelines, milestones, and educational tools exist for some chronic conditions, they do not meet the unique needs of patients with XLH. Evidence Acquisition To produce the first expert recommendations on HCT preparation for AYAs with XLH developed by clinical care investigators and transition experts, a formal literature search was conducted and discussed in an advisory board meeting in July 2020. A modified Delphi method was used to refine expert opinion and facilitate a consensus position. Evidence Synthesis We identified the need for psychosocial and access-related resources for disease education, genetic counseling, family planning, and AYA emancipation from caregiver-directed care. Additionally, we recognized that it is necessary to facilitate communication with patients through channels familiar and accessible to AYAs and teach patients to advocate for their health care/access to specialists. Conclusion Clear HCT preparation guidelines and treatment-related goals are defined. Individualized timelines and practical strategies for HCT preparation are proposed to optimize health outcomes resulting from continuous clinical care throughout the patient lifecycle. We provide an expert consensus statement describing a tailored HCT preparation program specifically for AYAs with XLH to aid in the effective transfer from pediatric- to adult-focused health care.

Purpose This study aims to explore how to identify and manage opportunities successfully in a large multi-organizational infrastructure project. Large projects struggle with exploiting and capturing opportunities because of the lack of practices that support active and continuous opportunity management over the project lifecycle in inter-organizational project networks. Design/methodology/approach This study provides empirical evidence of a successful opportunity management process based on an investigation of an infrastructure alliance project. The adopted research approach is an inductive case study. Findings By analyzing an infrastructure alliance project, this paper identifies key activities of opportunity management and furthermore, discusses the enablers of active and continuous opportunity management. Practical implications This study supports practitioners by providing knowledge about the possibilities and activities that could be deployed during the project lifecycle to improve opportunity management process and about the enablers – factors that facilitate alliance partners’ capabilities to manage opportunities. Originality/value There is limited empirical research on the practices of opportunity management that support continuous, active opportunity management in inter-organizational project contexts, although multidisciplinary project networks have possibilities for taking advantage of opportunities that emerge over the project lifecycle.

The subject of this research is the integrated security systems and the processes of their continuous improvement during the lifecycle. The goal lies in examination of the problem of systematization of lifecycle processes of the integrated security systems and formalization of their lifecycle model, taking into consideration the available practices of building security systems. The effectiveness of complex system support processes is first and foremost determined by the accurate identification of management goals and objectives, which requires an the lifecycle model adequate to the controlled object. Since the integrated security system has the characteristics of both, capital construction (engineering networks) and technical system (integration platform), the question of improvement of the lifecycle model is relevant. The main research results are as follows: substantiation of the problem of systematization of lifecycle models of the integrated security systems; analysis of the approaches towards their standardization, and substantiation of lifecycle model of the integrated security systems based on the system accounting of conducted operations. The novelty of the proposed model lies in the improvement of reference models of the integrated security systems by taking into account the entirety of reconfiguration and modernization operations. Description is given to the problem of systematization of lifecycle processes of the integrated security systems, which occurs due to the possibility of their classification as different groups of the complex systems. The offered lifecycle model of the integrated security systems through systematization of regulatory requirements is an attempt to acquire a non-contradictory list of measures in creation and operation of the integrated security systems. The results of this research can be used in practical activity of the employees of onsite security service in the context of development of the integrated security system. The implementation of the offered lifecycle model of the integrated security system in the processes of their development would allow systematizing the structure of processes, arranging the functions and activity of the departments on the continuous logistic support of the integrated security systems, and ensuring their consistent improvement.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify and define the certification lifecycle of laser powder bed fusion for aerospace applications from equipment acquisition and installation to production, part acceptance and continuous improvement activities. Design/methodology/approach A top–down systems engineering approach is performed consisting of concept development, requirements engineering and systems architecting. This approach is taken from the perspective of a production organization. Findings A certification roadmap is proposed that references industry requirements at the relevant phases of the roadmap. Each phase of the roadmap acts as a decision gate for progression to the next. Originality/value Qualification and certification of metal laser powder bed fusion is currently a challenge within the aerospace industry. From an aerospace point of view, the qualification and certification of this relatively new manufacturing process should not have to be any different from traditional manufacturing processes, although with extensive quality control and regulatory oversight. This paper proposes a means for fulfilling these requirements chronologically and provides guidance on ensuring such quality control throughout the manufacturing system lifecycle. This roadmap provides insight into the qualification and certification of laser powder bed fusion for aerospace applications and provides value for future industrial feasibility studies.

New business models in complex engineering products have favoured the integration of acquisition and sustainment phases in capability development. The product service system (PSS) concept enables manufacturers of complex engineering products to incorporate support services into the product’s manufacturing and sustainment lifecycle. However, the PSS design has imposed significant risks to the manufacturer not only in the manufacture of the product itself, but also in the provision of support services over long period of time at a predetermined price. This paper analysed three case studies using case study research design approach and mapped the service elements of the case studies to the generic complex engineering product service system (CEPSS) model. By establishing the concept of capability distribution for a PSS enterprise, the capability of the CEPSS can be overlaid on the performance-based reward scheme so that decision makers evaluate options related to the business opportunities presented to them.

This paper presents and discusses a survey of existing tools to support design and evaluation of websites, with special emphasis on improving the information navigation process. The amount of information of today's websites, the continuous evolution of the medium and the heterogeneity of typical users' profiles, make the website design task particularly hard. The presented tools are mainly based on recent models of Web usage behavior, and involve various natural language and semantic similarity modeling methods. Validation studies of the presented tools have shown that they can support effectively various phases of the website design lifecycle including information structuring, hyperlink evaluation and assessment of alternative designs. In this paper, existing techniques are discussed, the aspects of Web design that (should and) could be better supported are identified and suggestions are made on extensions of existing approaches to better support the usability evaluation process.

The explosion in the production of scientific data in recent years is placing strains upon conventional systems supporting integration, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of data and thus constraining the whole scientific process. Support for handling large quantities of diverse information can be provided by e-Science methodologies and the cyber-infrastructure that enables collaborative handling of such data. Regard needs to be taken of the whole process involved in scientific discovery. This includes the consideration of the requirements of the users and consumers further down the information chain and what they might ideally prefer to impose on the generators of those data. As the degree of digital capture in the laboratory increases, it is possible to improve the automatic acquisition of the ‘context of the data’ as well as the data themselves. This process provides an opportunity for the data creators to ensure that many of the problems they often encounter in later stages are avoided. We wish to elevate curation to an operation to be considered by the laboratory scientist as part of good laboratory practice, not a procedure of concern merely to the few specialising in archival processes. Designing curation into experiments is an effective solution to the provision of high-quality metadata that leads to better, more re-usable data and to better science.

In an era when many water systems worldwide are experiencing water stress regarding water quantity and quality, water reuse has received growing attention as one of the most promising integrated mitigating solutions. Nevertheless, the plethora of technologies and their combinations available, as well as social, economic, and environmental constraints, often make it complex for stakeholders and especially decision makers to elicit relevant information. The scope of the current study is to develop a decision support tool that supports pre-feasibility studies and aims at promoting water reuse and building capacities in the field. The tool developed currently encompasses 37 unit processes combined into 70 benchmark treatment trains. It also contains information on water quality standards and typical wastewater qualities. It estimates the removal performances for 12 parameters and the lifecycle costs including distribution. The tool and all underlying data are open access and under continuous development. The underlying systemic approach of the tool makes it intuitive also for users with limited prior knowledge in the field to identify most adequate solutions based on a multi-criteria assessment. This should help to promote water reuse and spearhead initiates for more detailed feasibility and design commissioning for implementation of water reuse schemes.

AbstractAgile software development (ASD) has emerged as a result of consolidated values proposed under the lightweight methods of software engineering. Despite bearing some criticisms, the initial deployment and results observed in the practice environment represents its increasing domination over the traditional software development practices. Any ASD method, in particular, requires knowledge-intensive practices and typically employs multi-disciplinary expert team working extended periods of time for weeks on a nearly continuous basis. A huge amount of tacit knowledge creation and exchange happens in the entire process over the project lifecycle, which attracts the attention of research in the domain of knowledge management (KM). In this paper, first, we have mapped the agile values and agile principles, and in its support, we have argued upon and the need for integrated KM infrastructure and proposed a KM model that can be employed within the organization. We have also developed a conceptual framework for knowledge sharing and learning for the individual practitioners for the sustainability of agile team. We attempt to create an organizational learning framework for knowledge creation and exchange among the involved entities in a collaborative practice environment.

In hot slab continuous casting (CC) process, the Machine Vision (MV) inspection method for slab surface defects has been becoming a research focus with the development of charge-coupled device (CCD) camera imaging technologies. To acquire a informative and reliable defects image is a prerequisite that means a maximum defects detection rate and minimum false recognition in the next image processing stage. In this paper, based on the CCD imaging principle and definition evaluation algorithm, the slab surface radiation feature at high temperature and CCD optical imaging properties had been analyzed under the focal plane, meanwhile, the CCD image definition of optical integral time controlling method had also been studied, which the defect image variance (IV) function, image average gradient (IAG) and information entropy (IIE) were calculated and analyzed. In the end, the image definition controlling algorithm for hot slab surface ROI imaging that adopted IIE evaluation algorithm, based on CCD integral time imaging controlling principle, had been proposed. This method also can support practical value for other machine vision engineering.

This study investigates the acquisition of the Spanish Imperfect by 60 English learners of Spanish at three different proficiency levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Two oral production tasks and one interpretation task show that although the Imperfect is used from early on, the full array of interpretations associated with this form (habitual, continuous and progressive) is not completely acquired even at advanced levels. Learners accept the Imperfect in imperfective contexts but have problems rejecting the Preterit. This problem persists even at advanced levels in continuous contexts. The continuous is conveyed in English by Past Tense, which is used in both perfective and imperfective contexts, whereas in Spanish only the Imperfect is appropriate. We argue that the incorrect low rejection of the Preterit signals a mapping problem of aspect-related features present in both English and Spanish onto a new form (the Imperfect). These results support the problematic nature of feature reassembly in the acquisition of the Spanish Imperfect by English speakers.

Natural disaster response and assessment are key elements of natural hazard monitoring and risk management. Currently, the existing systems are not able to meet the specific needs of many regional stakeholders worldwide; traditional approaches with field surveys are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and expensive, especially for severe disasters that affect a large geographic area. Recent studies have demonstrated that Earth observation (EO) data and technologies provide powerful support for the natural disaster emergency response. However, challenges still exist in support of the entire disaster lifecycle—preparedness, response, and recovery—which build the gaps between the disaster Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) already-in-place requirements and the EO capabilities. In order to tackle some of the above challenges, this paper demonstrates how to facilitate typhoon-triggered flood disaster-ready information delivery using an SDI services approach, and proposes a web-based remote sensing disaster decision support system to facilitate natural disaster response and impact assessment, which implements on-demand disaster resource acquisition, on-the-fly analysis, automatic thematic mapping, and decision report release. The system has been implemented with open specifications to facilitate interoperability. The typhoons and floods in Hainan Province, China, are used as typical scenarios to verify the system’s applicability and effectiveness. The system improves the automation level of the natural disaster emergency response service, and provides technical support for regional remote-sensing-based disaster mitigation in China.

This demand is represented at each end of the market: students who may wish to develop their personal skills and confidence, and companies which accordingly, may operate more efficiently with better prepared graduates. Introducing different alternatives for the acquisition of self-awareness and competencies into the higher education training palette can provide the basis for continuous self-development. The Life Long Learning objective is that students at all levels of education may acquire the self-awareness and competencies necessary for success in their chosen profession. The Faculty of Engineering group would support the implementation. The study's objectives are to identify the goals and present the results edited by the Competence Development Training Program research group formed at the University of Debrecen, Faculty of Engineering.

Background Well-functioning clinical decision support (CDS) can facilitate provider workflow, improve patient care, promote better outcomes, and reduce costs. However, poorly functioning CDS may lead to alert fatigue, cause providers to ignore important CDS interventions, and increase provider dissatisfaction. Objective The purpose of this article is to describe one institution's experience in implementing a program to create and maintain properly functioning CDS by systematically monitoring CDS firing rates and patterns. Methods Four types of CDS monitoring activities were implemented as part of the CDS lifecycle. One type of monitoring occurs prior to releasing active CDS, while the other types occur at different points after CDS activation. Results Two hundred and forty-eight CDS interventions were monitored over a 2-year period. The rate of detecting a malfunction or significant opportunity for improvement was 37% during preactivation and 18% during immediate postactivation monitoring. Monitoring also informed the process of responding to user feedback about alerts. Finally, an automated alert detection tool identified 128 instances of alert pattern change over the same period. A subset of cases was evaluated by knowledge engineers to identify true and false positives, the results of which were used to optimize the tool's pattern detection algorithms. Conclusion CDS monitoring can identify malfunctions and/or significant improvement opportunities even after careful design and robust testing. CDS monitoring provides information when responding to user feedback. Ongoing, continuous, and automated monitoring can detect malfunctions in real time, before users report problems. Therefore, CDS monitoring should be part of any systematic program of implementing and maintaining CDS.

We present CaosDB, a Research Data Management System (RDMS) designed to ensure seamless integration of inhomogeneous data sources and repositories of legacy data in a FAIR way. Its primary purpose is the management of data from biomedical sciences, both from simulations and experiments during the complete research data lifecycle. An RDMS for this domain faces particular challenges: research data arise in huge amounts, from a wide variety of sources, and traverse a highly branched path of further processing. To be accepted by its users, an RDMS must be built around workflows of the scientists and practices and thus support changes in workflow and data structure. Nevertheless, it should encourage and support the development and observation of standards and furthermore facilitate the automation of data acquisition and processing with specialized software. The storage data model of an RDMS must reflect these complexities with appropriate semantics and ontologies while offering simple methods for finding, retrieving, and understanding relevant data. We show how CaosDB responds to these challenges and give an overview of its data model, the CaosDB Server and its easy-to-learn CaosDB Query Language. We briefly discuss the status of the implementation, how we currently use CaosDB, and how we plan to use and extend it.

Abstract The optimal procurement is achieved by monitoring them from the very beginning of the planning process. Procurement planning, as one of the basic functions of procurement management, determines the goals, tasks and the way of their realization. The realization of procurement plans is realized through the purchase function of business entities, both from the domestic and foreign markets. Asset management is a continuous process that runs throughout the lifecycle of a constructed facility. The current practice of asset management is paper-based consisting of manual inspection and proves to be time consuming, tedious, and prone to human error. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been found to be an emerging technology and core of information management for the design, construction, operation and maintenance (O&M) process. Though the usefulness of BIM has been greatly realized in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry, its use for O&M, particularly in asset management, is still in its infancy. This research describes a framework of an intelligent BIM record model that can capture all the assets in BIM during the construction of a building facility. All the information necessary for operation and maintenance along with the location would be stored in a database integrating with the BIM. The database library can be interrogated with BIM and serves as a repository of asset management for the built facility. The BIM record model would help to take informed decisions regarding operations, maintenance, servicing, repair and replacement of an asset hence saving labour-intensive asset inventory, time and money, and preventing the wastage of unnecessary tools acquisition.

Estimating the state-of-charge of a lead-acid battery at remote seismic nodes is a key factor in managing the available power. Optimal management enables the continuous acquisition of seismic data of an area. This paper presents the management of lead-acid batteries at remote seismic nodes, using the Neural Network model's historical data to estimate the battery's state-of-charge. Powersim (PSIM) simulation tool was used to implement photovoltaic energy harvesting system with a buck mode converter and maximum power point tracking algorithm to acquire historical data. A backpropagation neural network technique for training the historical dataset of hourly points in 500 days on the Matlab platform is adopted, and a feedforward neural network is employed due to the irregularities of the input data. The neural network model's hidden layer contains the transfer function of the Tansig Function to produce the model output of state-of-charge estimations. Besides, this paper is based on the management of estimating the state-of-charge of the lead-acid battery near-realtime instead of relying on the vendor's lifecycle information. The simulated results show the simplicity and optimal estimations of state-of-charge of the lead-acid battery with RMSE of 0.023%.

The software system enables students studying at higher medical universities, majoring in cardiology to get acquainted and acquire skills for working with real cardiac records. The presented system allows the examination and use of cardiac recordings obtained using modern non-invasive technologies for research and procedures - modern electrocardiographic equipment, Holter-monitoring systems, photoplethysmographic devices. This will enable students to gain prior experience in working with real biomedical patient records. The presented software system together with the traditional training will help to increase the quality of modern education, will contribute to the acquisition of abilities, skills, and competencies necessary for future medical professionals.

Identifying fraudulent or anomalous business procedures is today a key challenge for organisations of any dimension. Nonetheless, the continuous nature of business activities conveys to the continuous acquisition of data in support of business process monitoring. In light of this, we propose a method for online anomaly detection in business processes. From a stream of events, our approach extract cases descriptors and applies a density-based clustering technique to detect outliers. We applied our method to a real-life dataset, and we used streaming clustering measures for evaluating performances. Exploring different combinations of parameters, we obtained promising performance metrics, showing that our method is capable of finding anomalous process instances in a vast complexity of scenarios.

Abstract This study investigates the distributional patterns of verb form frequencies in the Spanish past tense (the Preterit and the Imperfect) in the Corpus del Español (Davies, 2002). Following a usage-based approach, we examine the potential influence of input frequency as a driving factor in L2 learning. Results provide support for the existence of a distributional bias in L1 Spanish, with several telic predicates more often occurring in the Preterit and several atelic predicates in the Imperfect. Results also demonstrate that the distribution of verbs in the Preterit and the Imperfect is Zipfian, with the most frequent verbs overall accounting for the majority of all the tokens. Finally, an analysis of the different meanings of the Imperfect demonstrates clear differences in frequency of use with the continuous meaning as the most frequently expressed meaning, followed by habituality and progressivity. Implications for research and teaching are discussed.

EMBL-EBI, Europe's biomolecular data hub, is a world leader in managing and analysing big data in biology and making it freely available to scientists worldwide. Research infrastructures (RI) like EMBL-EBI rely extensively on information technology (IT) services to conduct research and support the delivery of scientific services. These IT services are complex and diverse and IT service management (ITSM) has been shown in other domains to help to improve efficiency and productivity. ITSM is a collection of standards that help organisations develop a process-based approach for managing the full lifecycle of IT services, while keeping their users' needs at the forefront and promoting continuous improvement. However, many organisations struggle with the design and implementation of an ITSM system as it involves the need for organisational change, and because the process approach can seem rigid and bureaucratic on the surface. This article aims to share the experience of the EMBL-EBI IT department in designing and implementing an ITSM system. ITSM implementation steps, benefits, challenges, opportunities, and practices are highlighted, critically analysed, and discussed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is an audit of information technology (IT) skills set of librarians in some Nigerian university libraries with the aim of examining their relevance and adequacy to the digital environment. Nigerian universities as knowledge creators and their libraries as gatekeepers of knowledge are rapidly witnessing the introduction of various IT. One of the challenges facing IT/digital library projects in Nigeria has been the readiness of the university libraries in terms of knowledge and skills to implement the digital and electronic library services. Design/methodology/approach – This paper used the survey approach. The sampling technique for the selection of the universities was stratified and for the librarians (respondents), census. The sampling frame was the approved list of universities released by the National Universities Commission as of the time of this study. The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Findings – The findings of this paper revealed that many of the respondents do have knowledge and skills of email use and word processing tasks but lack knowledge of search engines and directories other than Google and Yahoo, respectively. Many of them do not know how to evaluate and catalogue e-resources; have no knowledge of subject gateways, specialised databases and some open-access library databases; have no knowledge of database management; are not skilled in Web design; and are equally not familiar with Web design applications. Originality/value – The study recommends management support for IT skills training and/or continuous professional development to improve the librarians. Librarians are also challenged and encouraged to explore the range of training resources available over the Internet for self-development.

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) can occur soon after translation or at any stage in the lifecycle of a given protein, and they may help regulate protein folding, stability, cellular localisation, activity, or the interactions proteins have with other proteins or biomolecular species. PTMs are crucial to our functional understanding of biology, and new quantitative mass spectrometry (MS) and bioinformatics workflows are maturing both in labelled multiplexed and label-free techniques, offering increasing coverage and new opportunities to study human health and disease. Techniques such as Data Independent Acquisition (DIA) are emerging as promising approaches due to their re-mining capability. Many bioinformatics tools have been developed to support the analysis of PTMs by mass spectrometry, from prediction and identifying PTM site assignment, open searches enabling better mining of unassigned mass spectra—many of which likely harbour PTMs—through to understanding PTM associations and interactions. The remaining challenge lies in extracting functional information from clinically relevant PTM studies. This review focuses on canvassing the options and progress of PTM analysis for large quantitative studies, from choosing the platform, through to data analysis, with an emphasis on clinically relevant samples such as plasma and other body fluids, and well-established tools and options for data interpretation.

Abstract. Advancements in technology have facilitated new opportunities in aerial photogrammetry; one of these is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to estimate snow depth (SD). Here, a multi-rotor type UAV is used for SD retrievals over an area of 172 000 m2. Photos with 80 % forward and 60 % side overlaps were taken by UAV on two different (snow-covered and snow-free) days. SD estimations were obtained from the difference between 3-D stereo digital surface models (DSMs) produced for both days. Manual SD measurements were performed on the ground concurrent with UAV flights. The current study is unique in that the SD retrievals were derived using two different image acquisition modes. In the first, images were taken as UAV was continuously flying and in the second UAV had small stops and kept its position in air fixed as the photos were taken. Root mean square error of UAV derived SDs is calculated as 2.43 cm in continuous and 1.79 cm in fixed acquisitions. The results support the hypothesis, based on theoretical considerations, that fixed-position image acquisitions using multi-rotor platforms should enable more accurate SD estimates. It is further seen that, as SDs increased, the errors in SD calculations are reduced.

Abstract In connection with the problem that the food processing information system is poor due to the absence of knowledge acquisition and a knowledge selfupdating function, a knowledge acquisition approach, based on a Support Vector Machine (SVM) is proposed. First, the approach establishes a set of predicted samples for the relationship between the food processing parameters and product quality; then it uses discretization of the continuous attributes, attributes reduction and a rule extraction algorithm of SVM to automatically acquire predicted knowledge from a large number of predicted sample sets. After that it saves the predicted knowledge in the knowledge base of an expert system; finally, the method realizes extraction of the knowledge about the food processing process based on the inference engine, which greatly enhances the efficiency and applicability of the acquired knowledge in an online aided decision system of food processing quality and safety.

A quantitative research design, using regression analysis was applied in this study and a total of 250 valid returns were obtained through a questionnaire distributed to the employees of commercial banks in Jordan. Knowledge management uses was adopted as an independent variable with four subgroups: knowledge acquisition, knowledge storage, knowledge transfer and knowledge application. Total quality management practices were adopted as dependent variable with five subgroups: top management support, employee's involvement, continuous improvement, customer focus, and data driven decision management. The results show that three of the knowledge management dimensions (i.e. knowledge acquisition, knowledge storage, and knowledge transfer) significantly affects total quality management practices. However, knowledge application showed insignificant effect. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed at the end of this paper.

This paper addresses Landau–Kleffner syndrome (LKS), a childhood aphasia, from the perspective of I-language and the critical period for first language acquisition. LKS involves a language disorder and behavioral disturbances resembling autistic spectrum disorders due to electroencephalographic abnormalities with continuous spike-and-waves during sleep over the temporal regions. Comparing LKS with other childhood syndromes, the architecture of language is explored through elucidating the linguistic mechanisms behind the language disorder in LKS on the basis of Hickok & Poeppel’s (2007) dual-stream model of speech processing. It is claimed that early onset LKS provides further support for the critical period for first language acquisition and modularity of mind (the faculty of language), and that verbal auditory input during the critical period is most crucial for language recovery and development in LKS. Considering that electroencephalographic abnormalities affect cognitive/motor functions, ameliorating neural dysfunction in the affected brain areas with proper application of trans-cranial direct current stimulation is recommended.

The Santa Catarina Tide Gauge Network (SCTGN) is a continuous sea level monitoring system to support fishery, aquaculture, and navigation in general. Deployed in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, the initiative started in 2012 with one tide gauge at the Santa Catarina Island South Bay to support aquaculture research projects and hydrodynamic numerical modelling. By 2020, the SCTGN was fully operational, consisting of 11 tide gauge stations along the 450km of the Santa Catarina coastal line. The next step is standardizing these tide stations to international data collection protocols. Knowledge of the effects different programming protocols have on data collection are important since they may affect the results. Data from a radar gauge (RG) and a vented (or relative) pressure gauge (VPG) were obtained over six months. The difference between RG and VPG measurements showed a 5.07cm2 variance. Percentage of reading errors was 0.03% and 0.77% for RG and VPG, respectively. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of the SCTGN data collection protocol in the RG to comply with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) recommendations for sea level monitoring. We find that an RG gauge using the SCTGN protocol is adequate to monitor sea levels and has an easier installation and maintenance, and more stable vertical datum control.

Joint fires are defined as fires produced during the employment of forces from two or more components in coordinated action to produce desired effects in the support of a common objective. When joint fires assist air, land, maritime, and SOF to move, manoeuvre, and control territory, populations, airspace, and key waters are called Joint Fire Support (JFS).According to the latest standardization agreements, the range of capabilities to influence enemy forces has been extended to the sphere of influence in order to achieve the desired effect, not only a physical one but also a psychological one. That way Joint Fire Support (JFS) and Effects is the coordinated and integrated employment of all weapon platforms delivering fires (including land, air, naval indirect fires) to achieve the required effects on ground targets to support land operations in the full spectrum of conflict. It encompasses the integration of indirect fires and effects in order to influence the adversary forces, installations or functions. Joint Fire Support Element (JFSE) could either encompass influence elements as, for example, PSYOPS, CIMIC, EW, or be incorporated in a wider cell dealing with overall influence activities.The necessity of conducting JFS more often occurs at the tactical level because of the complexity of contemporary operational environment (non-linear and non-continuous battlespace, dispersion of forces, high operations tempo, and short time of reaction). For this reason, JFS should be coordinated, synchronized and integrated in the framework of three vital components: surveillance and target acquisition (STA), command and control (C2), weapon (delivering) systems. Among them, Field Artillery Forces possess a relevant part of each of the abovementioned subsystems and their capabilities. The article presents selected solutions from different countries, experimented so far, and experiences from current military, peace and stabilization operations, indicating the plans and directions for further development of Joint Fire Support and Effect.

Objective: To elucidate evidence regarding nurse educators' and preceptors' capacity to facilitate students' learning about paediatric pain management (PPM) in low- and middle-income countries(LMICs).Methods: The five-stage framework by Arksey and O'Malley guided this review. Studies published in English between January 2010 and April 2020 were searched using EBSCO Host/ ScienceDirect, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PUBMED and Scopus. Of 300 papers identified through the search strategy 27 primary research articles were retained: quantitative (n=18), qualitative (n=8) and mixed-methods (n=1).Results: Knowledge deficiency and inappropriate attitudes toward PPM, lack of autonomy in decisionmaking, scarcity of resources and cultural misconception regarding pain in children were hindering the effective PPM in LMICs. Strategies including nursing curricula review, continuous in-service training, access to resources and the leadership support are required to optimise effective PPM and improve students' facilitation for learning about PPM.Conclusion: Further research is required as a body of evidence to support the development of a framework for capacity enhancement of nurse educators and nurse preceptors who facilitate nursing students acquiring competency for PPM in LMICs. Method Engineering (ME) aims to improve software development methods by creating and proposing adaptation frameworks whereby methods are created to provide suitable matches with the requirements of the organization and address project concerns and fit specific situations. Therefore, methods are defined and modularized into components stored in method repositories. The assembly of appropriate methods depends on the particularities of each project, and rapid method construction is inevitable in the reuse and management of existing methods. The ME discipline aims at providing engineering capability for optimizing, reusing, and ensuring flexibility and adaptability of methods; there are three key research challenges which can be observed in the literature: 1) the lack of standards and tooling support for defining, publishing, discovering, and retrieving methods which are only locally used by their providers without been largely adapted by other organizations; 2) dynamic adaptation and assembly of methods with respect to imposed continuous changes or evolutions of the project lifecycle; and 3) variability management in software methods in order to enable rapid and effective construction, assembly and adaptation of existing methods with respect to particular situations. The authors propose semantically-enabled families of method-oriented architecture by applying service-oriented product line engineering principles and employing Semantic Web technologies.

Nowadays teachers face many challenges in maintaining a continuous and high-class professional update in contemporary education. Faced with the need for greater qualification, teachers require not only sound and based training for their pedagogical activities, but resources that allow to reconcile the acquisition of knowledge in the dynamic routine of the classroom. The purpose of this article is to present the extent to which the process of Knowledge Translation (KT) can improve the continued training of teachers in the exact area. It is suggested that the improvement of these professionals can be improved through KT, by sending scientific evidence to individuals, in order to offer potentially useful materials to the teacher's updating activities. Discussions concerning the scenario of training and professional updating of teachers will be presented, highlighting the publications and / or scientific articles as contents and instruments that allow the improvement of the teaching training through the KT process. From the bibliographic survey carried out, it is demonstrated how this process can be applied in the educational area. An intervention was carried out with teachers of the Exact Sciences Area, whose proposal was to send summaries of scientific evidence to the participants, for a few months, in order to attest the effects of KT on the qualification of teachers. This study presents the results and discussions of the impacts generated by the intervention carried out, such as, increase in the frequency that teachers went on to develop some activities or differentiated practices in their teaching units, as well as the level of utilization of the shared content, as a post-intervention period result, showing the potential relevance and applicability of KT in the continued training of teachers.

Previous studies have demonstrated that varied practice (involving several versions of a skill) has advantage over constant practice (involving only one version of a skill) in learning a motor skill. However, the support for variable practice mainly came from studies using discrete motor skills. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess if variable practice was more effective than constant practice for the purpose of learning a continuous and real-life motor skill: wheelchair propulsion. A total of 36 able-bodied undergraduate students participated in this study. There were two constant-practice groups. One group practiced wheelchair propulsion on a roller system with a single speed, 30% of the maximum speed (30%-only group), and one group practiced using 55% of the maximum speed (55%-only group). One variable-practice group (variable group) practiced the propulsion with two different speeds, 30 and 55% of the maximum speed. In addition to retention tests, two transfer tests (i.e., tests on 40 and 70% of the maximum speeds) were performed by the three groups after the 10 weeks of training. The results were mixed. The variable-practice group produced significantly fewer absolute errors on both transfer tests than the 30%-only group. However, when compared to the 55%-only group, the variable-practice group only produced significantly fewer absolute errors on the transfer test at 70% speed, but not at 40% speed.

The current IT market is more and more dominated by the “cloud continuum”. In the “traditional” cloud, computing resources are typically homogeneous in order to facilitate economies of scale. In contrast, in edge computing, computational resources are widely diverse, commonly with scarce capacities and must be managed very efficiently due to battery constraints or other limitations. A combination of resources and services at the edge (edge computing), in the core (cloud computing), and along the data path (fog computing) is needed through a trusted cloud continuum. This requires novel solutions for the creation, optimization, management, and automatic operation of such infrastructure through new approaches such as infrastructure as code (IaC). In this paper, we analyze how artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques and tools can enhance the operation of complex applications to support the broad and multi-stage heterogeneity of the infrastructural layer in the “computing continuum” through the enhancement of IaC optimization, IaC self-learning, and IaC self-healing. To this extent, the presented work proposes a set of tools, methods, and techniques for applications’ operators to seamlessly select, combine, configure, and adapt computation resources all along the data path and support the complete service lifecycle covering: (1) optimized distributed application deployment over heterogeneous computing resources; (2) monitoring of execution platforms in real time including continuous control and trust of the infrastructural services; (3) application deployment and adaptation while optimizing the execution; and (4) application self-recovery to avoid compromising situations that may lead to an unexpected failure.

The measurement of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) requires the acquisition of multiple quantities regarding thermal comfort and indoor air quality. The IEQ monitoring is essential to investigate the building’s performance, especially when renovation is needed to improve energy efficiency and occupants’ well-being. Thus, IEQ data should be acquired for long periods inside occupied buildings, but traditional measurement solutions could not be adequate. This paper presents the development and application of a non-intrusive and scalable IoT sensing solution for continuous IEQ measurement in occupied buildings during the renovation process. The solution is composed of an IR scanner for mean radiant temperature measurement and a desk node with environmental sensors (air temperature, relative humidity, CO2, PMs). The integration with a BIM-based renovation approach was developed to automatically retrieve building’s data required for sensor configuration and KPIs calculation. The system was installed in a nursery located in Poland to support the renovation process. IEQ performance measured before the intervention revealed issues related to radiant temperature and air quality. Using measured data, interventions were realized to improve the envelope insulation and the occupant’s behaviour. Results from post-renovation measurements showed the IEQ improvement achieved, demonstrating the impact of the sensing solution.

With the continuous improvement of control technology and the continuous improvement of people’s living standards, the needs of disabled people for high-quality prosthetics have become increasingly strong. A control method of robotic arm based on surface electromyography signal (sEMG) of forearm is proposed. Firstly, the 16-channel EMG data of the forearm is obtained via the multi-channel EMG acquisition instrument and the electrode cuff as input signals, the features are extracted, then the gestures are classified and identified by the support-vector machine (SVM) algorithm, and the signals are finally transmitted to the robotic arm, so that people can teleoperate the robotic arm via sEMG signals in real time. Reduce the number of channels to lower the cost while ensuring a high and usable recognition rate. Experiments were performed by collecting EMG signals from the forearm surface of eight healthy volunteers. The experimental results show that the system’s overall gesture recognition accuracy rate can reach up to 90%, and the system responds fast, laying a good foundation for manipulating artificial limbs in the future.

Hybrid wireless sensor network made up of wireless body area networks (WBANs) and cellular network provides support for telemedicine. In order to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, WBANs collect and transmit crucial biomedical data to provide a continuous health monitoring by using various biomedical wireless sensors attached on or implanted in the human body. And then, collected signals are sent to a remote data center via cellular network. One of the features of WBAN is that its power consumption and sampling rate should be restricted to a minimum. Compressed sensing (CS) is an emerging signal acquisition/compression methodology which offers a prominent alternative to traditional signal acquisition. It has been proved that the successful recovery rate of multiple measurement vectors (MMV) model is higher than the single measurement vector (SMV) case. In this paper, we propose a simple algorithm of transforming the SMV model into MMV model based on the correlation of electrocardiogram (ECG), such that the MMV model can be used for general ECG signals rather than only several special signals. Experimental results show that its recovery quality is better than some existing CS-based ECG compression algorithms and sufficient for practical use.

Paper Abstract The PCB 4.0 research project offers the opportunity to take the flexibility, energy efficiency, and resource efficiency of production processes to a whole new level through intelligent control and networking. The development of electronics and sensors, which is among the strengths of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Germany in particular, plays a key role here. The integration of sensors into workpieces and systems must be as compact as possible for flexible and efficient data acquisition. Miniaturized radio sensor nodes offer this possibility, but their production and integration currently still pose major technical challenges. The objective of the research project PCB 4.0 is the creation of a technology platform for the design and manufacture of embedded miniaturized radio frequency (RF) sensor nodes and their integration into production processes. Four dedicated scenarios, that reflect different phases of the product life cycle, demonstrate the performance of the developed technologies - ranging from production to component use - detecting and processing the actual state in the production of industrial electronics in real time. A maintenance-free Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) sensor node was developed to report environmental data (e.g. temperature, acceleration) during lifecycle of an Industry 4.0 PCB. The embedded security chip from WIBU-Systems AG, called “CmASIC”, provides asymmetric, cryptographic algorithms and certificates to guarantee the highest level of authenticity during the PCB production process and over the entire product lifecycle. In addition, a highly miniaturized sensor node (11×10×1.6 mm3) was developed using PCB embedding technology. The node includes an integrated PCB helix antenna, embedded accumulator and a sensor with media access. The embedding technology was transferred to mass production on 610×457 mm2 manufacturing panel size. To optimize the design flow of sensor nodes, a PCB design tool was created using Altium® Designer interface. This tool's highly efficient interactive and automatic functionalities support all aspects of the PCB design process with embedded components. For device genuineness control, a centralized license management system was used, a tool for generating and deploying certificates to securely track device identities, supporting the industrial production chain. Sensor data and other status information (e.g. wear level, authenticity) are made available via two cloud solutions (Siemens MindSphere and a solution for small and medium-sized businesses by partner Sensorik Bayern GmbH (SBG)). Demonstrators were developed to support scenarios for future industrial demands. During test runs, the sensor nodes howed the potential to monitor and control the process flow and system lifetime directly at the component level. The paper describes the technological developments towards miniaturized sensor nodes as well as the integration of those miniaturized SiPs (System-in-Package) into a sensor network. Finally, the application of such sensor networks for smart manufacturing is demonstrated for selected use cases.

Purpose Given the ongoing digital transformation, building information modeling (BIM) has great potential to create a collaborative environment in the whole lifecycle of the built asset, from inception to decommissioning. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach This paper relates current developments in Québec with regard to the use of BIM for asset management (AM). The steps taken by three public organizations to develop their capabilities and take advantage of new possibilities are presented. The main methodological approach is based on participant observation, through case studies complemented by a questionnaire. Findings This paper reports on results and analysis of an important module of a broader research project on the impact of new technologies and collaborative methods for projects and AM. The results of this first research module points to the importance of using pilot projects to develop a continuous improvement approach, where feedback loops from projects support the development of AM capabilities and culture. Another important finding is the importance of sharing experience for the three public organizations involved. Originality/value The main contributions of this paper are to document this overarching research program and to gain deeper insights by reflexively considering the steps taken and the ones ahead for the quest to enhance the transfer of information for built assets at the end of projects to the operations and maintenance phase and to use BIM for operation.

Wearable electroencephalography systems of out-of-hospital can both provide complementary recordings and offer several benefits over long-term monitoring. However, several limitations were present in these new-born systems, for example, uncomfortable for wearing, inconvenient for retrieving the recordings by patients themselves, unable to timely provide accurate classification, and early warning information. Therefore, we proposed a wireless wearable electroencephalography system for encephalopathy daily monitoring, named as Brain-Health, which focused on the following three points: (a) the monitoring device integrated with electroencephalography acquisition sensors, signal processing chip, and Bluetooth, attached to a sport hat or elastic headband; (b) the mobile terminal with dedicated application, which is not only for continuous recording and displaying electroencephalography signal but also for early warning in real time; and (c) the encephalopathy’s classification algorithm based on intelligent Support Vector Machine, which is used in a new application of wearable electroencephalography for encephalopathy daily monitoring. The results showed a high mean accuracy of 91.79% and 93.89% in two types of classification for encephalopathy. In conclusion, good performance of our Brain-Health system indicated the feasibility and effectiveness for encephalopathy daily monitoring and patients’ health self-management.
