The use of mobile devices to access the World Wide Web is becoming more prevalent. When browsing webpages on small-screen devices, it is difficult to locate information of interest since the limited screen space can be fully packed with information. Also, browsing Web tables on small-screen devices is a non-trivial problem. To fit a large table in a small-screen device, the association between data values and their corresponding headers may be disrupted. It is difficult to locate information accurately if the data meanings are lost. For visually impaired users, the problem is even more challenging. Sequential presentation of the webpage by a screen reader is too time-consuming if the information of interest is placed at or near the end of the webpage. Therefore, there is a need to re-organize useful information in webpages in order to enhance information finding on small-screen devices. In this thesis, various adaptations are proposed by exploring and exploiting relationships between Web elements in the webpage. In the current literature, some proposed heuristics are based on specific HTML elements, which cannot be generalized. Some other algorithms assume a correct DOM structure, which would fail if the webpage is not properly marked up. Many algorithms extract blocks without assigning them the proper titles. A gap needs to be filled, such that extracted blocks will be given a proper title through exploring the relationships between semantic elements. In this thesis, I propose to integrate relationship analysis and DOM-tree structure traversal for identifying logical sections together with their section headings. By extracting all the section headings, a table of content can be constructed to provide direct access to interested sections in an efficient way. Relationship analysis is a critical complement to the DOM structure for identifying the semantic content hierarchy when a webpage is not properly marked up. By exploring relationships between table cells, the structure of an unstructured Web table can be extracted. The semantic meanings of the data values are retained by preserving the data values and their corresponding headers. A novel way of accessing a webpage, which converts the page itself and its Web table into menu-based presentation, is then proposed. Converting the webpage into an Interactive Voice Response System introduces yet another mode of access which can enhance the accessibility of the webpage. In addition to improving mobile accessibility, the proposed adaptations can also benefit the visually impaired users. Experiments show that the average effectiveness and efficiency of adaptation with direct access are improved by 18% and 15% respectively, which are clearly better than the case without adaptation. Also, by adapting the Web table into a series of menu pages, the effectiveness and efficiency are improved by 61% and 37% respectively. For the evaluations with visually impaired users, the adaptation with direct access can greatly improve efficiency by 85%. Some complicated Web tables in fact could not be properly interpreted by visually impaired users; the Web table adaptation makes them accessible. Information finding indeed becomes more efficient and effective when using the adapted versions.

In this paper, I will attempt to account for the contents of visual phenomenology. I will suggest that the most useful and sufficient way to account for the information experienced during visual consciousness is to appeal to fundamental, sensory points of data that are organized spatiotemporally. That is, we should understand henomenal experience as composed solely of tiny flecks of sensory information spread over the entire three-dimensional space of which we are aware. This species of information is both intuitively fundamental to our experience and appears to be actually fundamental neurally, so, it is an excellent candidate for a sufficient account of the contents of visual phenomenology. For the present purpose, I will stray little from dealing solely with visual consciousness. However, it is my aim that the account should extend smoothly to each other sensory domain of phenomenology. I will argue that this kind of extension is enough to fully describe the contents of all experience. Visual consciousness is in no way separate from other aspects of conscious experience, except in that it has been most extensively studied scientifically. For that reason, I will focus on how my account functions with respect to visual phenomenology. In sections II and III, I will begin by looking at what a theory of content is and then why we need a theory of content for visual phenomenology. In section IV I will examine the relationship between content and representation and also attempt to provide a set of criteria for selecting a theory of content. In section V I will examine the relationship of the audience to the theory. Section VI will provide an overview of the theory of content that I think follows most naturally from the preceding considerations and standards. I will close with a survey of several objections in section VII.

The purpose of this research has been to test a measure of socialization content and perceived organizational support. The survey used for the data collection combined the Chao, O'Leary-Kelly, Wolf, Klein, and Gardner (1994) survey of socialization content with the Eisenberger, Huntington, Hutchison, and Sowa (1986) survey of perceived organizational support. Data were collected via company intranet at one location of a large, multinational corporation (N = 304). The instruments did not factor as expected and further analysis could not be performed, but these results may be due to extreme environmental circumstances in the company during the data collection period and suggest that replication of the study is warranted.

Despite Minnesota’s investment in professional development in content area literacy, secondary students are not showing expected literacy gains. A lack of literacy proficiency limits future options for students. The purpose of this study was to examine content-area literacy strategy inclusion and its relationship to professional development in the context of complexity theory, efficacy theory, transformational learning theory, structured teaching, and constructivism. A cross-section correlation survey research study was conducted to investigate the relationship of time spent in systematic professional development, type of professional development, rate of strategy inclusion, and confidence in literacy strategy inclusion in lesson design. Convenience sampling was employed to secure secondary teachers (N = 65) in public schools in Minnesota. The Spearman Rho Coefficient calculation was used to analyze these 4 variables; relationships were determined at ( p < .05) and (p < .01) confidence levels. According to the results of the study, self-selected professional development is related to the frequency of literacy strategy use and confidence in literacy strategy use. Time in professional development is a critical issue in confidence of literacy strategy use. Recommendations for local districts include providing a menu of self-selected literacy professional development options. This study may impact social change through providing educators improved literacy instruction, resulting in more competent adult readers and informed decision-makers.

With the growing popularity of integrating mobile networks and social networks, people now enjoy a freer and more efficient means of communication. Smarter mobile devices facilitate modern human life. In the information age, various new types of information have begun to appear. How to disseminate content to people in a swift and fair way has long been a question. Choosing the right strategy for content distribution is especially crucial for mobile social networks. In this thesis project we use epidemic models for content distribution in mobile social networks. Stochastic mobility models and an SIR epidemic model are set up in the evaluation. We analyze the impact of various parameters of mobility models and epidemic model on content distribution’s success rate and delivery delay. Also, we exploit the social relationships to facilitate content distribution and show the impact of social relationships on content distribution. Simulations have shown that increasing speed and node number in the mobility models will have positive impact on content distribution success rate as well as decreasing the delay. The infect time limit and infect count limit of the epidemic model are also important for swiftly distributing content while considering energy consumption and fairness for nodes. In the social relationship simulation, nodes’ meeting times during a period of time are calculated and a threshold based on a certain level of meeting times is used for categorizing the friendship relationships between nodes. The results show that it will be easier for a successful distribution to be achieved as the social relationship between nodes gets stronger. Also, the delay shows a decreasing trend until reaching the ideal distribution delay time.

I den information som ålder, har olika nya typer av information börjat visas. Hur sprida innehåll till människor påett snabbt och rättvist sätt har länge varit en fråga. Att välja rätt strategi för distribution av innehåll är särskilt viktigt för mobila sociala nätverk. I den här avhandlingen projekt använder vi epidemiska modeller för distribution av innehåll i mobila sociala nätverk. Stokastiska rörlighet modeller och en SIR-epidemi modell sätts upp i utvärderingen.  Vi analyserar effekterna av olika parametrar rörlighet modeller och epidemisk modell påinnehållsdistribution s framgång och leveransförsening. Dessutom utnyttjar vi de sociala relationerna för att underlätta distribution av innehåll och visa hur sociala relationer pådistribution av innehåll. Simuleringar har visat att ökad hastighet och nodnummer i rörlighet modellerna kommer att ha en positiv inverkan pådistribution av innehåll framgång samt att minska fördröjningen. Den infektera tid och infektera räkna gräns epidemin modellen är ocksåviktiga för att snabbt distribuera innehåll och samtidigt överväga energiförbrukning och rättvisa för noder. I den sociala relationen simulering är noder möte tid under en tidsperiod beräknas och en tröskel baserad påen viss nivåav mötestiden används för att kategorisera vänskap relationer mellan noder. Resultaten visade att det blir lättare för en lyckad spridning uppnås som den sociala relationen mellan noder blir starkare. Dessutom visar fördröjningen en nedåtgående trend tills den når fördröjningen av en ideal fördelning.

This study investigated the relationship between teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) about electrostatics and learners' performance in the topic. Two in-service and two pre-service physical science teachers, together with their learners, agreed to participate in the study. The PCK of the teachers was viewed as two manifestations; the personal PCK, which is static in nature and the enacted PCK, which is dynamic. A content representation (CoRe) tool and lesson plans were used to collect data that reflected the personal PCK of the teachers. The data for the enacted PCK was collected using classroom observations, and video stimulated recall (VSR) interviews. A topic specific PCK model was adopted as the framework for this study. The model asserts that specific content is transformed for instruction through five components, namely; learners' prior knowledge, curricular saliency, what is difficult to teach, representations including analogies, and conceptual teaching strategies. Guided by the model, I developed two rubrics to assess and quantify the quality of the teachers' personal and enacted PCK on a four-point scale. Learners, on the other hand, wrote a test developed specifically for this study which explored their performance in the fundamental concepts chosen for this study. The performance of the learners was then related to the personal and the enacted PCK of the teachers separately. The results revealed that the personal and the enacted PCK of the teachers, as well as the performance of the learners, varied across fundamental concepts of electrostatics. The variations in the personal and enacted PCK provided empirical evidence that supports the notion that PCK has a concept specific nature. The results also showed that the performance of the learners was better related to the enacted PCK of the teachers compared to the personal PCK. These results imply that it is important to make teaching practice the centre of pre-service teacher education given the direct impact of enacted PCK on learning. Furthermore, exploring PCK at concept level reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the concepts. As such, pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher professional development may be tailored in a manner that addresses the concepts that require intervention.

This study was designed to determine to what extent provision of personally relevant information and sensory cues would agree between Recipient and Informant for selection of memory book content. Six dyads married to each other an average of 29.17 years (SD = 10.03), between the ages of 43 and 70 years (Mean = 57; SD = 8.39), and cognitively competent (i.e., no diagnosis of cognitive impairment) participated. Participants completed questionnaires independently and provided personally relevant information/memories, aversions towards select memories/topics, and sensory cues on behalf of themselves (as “Recipient) and their spouse (as “Informant”). For provision of personally relevant information/memories, Informant and Recipient was 44.58% in agreement (SD = 14.99). For provision of aversions towards select memories/topics, Informant and Recipient was 24.86% in agreement (SD = 30.81). For provision of sensory cues, Informant and Recipient was 19.6% in agreement (SD = 30.81). Findings suggest that memory books made by others may not include the most important memories of the Recipient, thereby limiting the effectiveness of the memory book. Therefore, efforts should be made to encourage individuals to create a memory book while cognitively competent or share their most meaningful memories with the person who is most likely to make them a memory book if they should need one in the future.

This dissertation is a study of customer relationship management theory and practice. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a business strategy whereby companies build strong relationships with existing and prospective customers with the goal of increasing organizational profitability. It is also a learning process involving managing change in processes, people, and technology. CRM implementation and its ramifications are also not completely understood as evidenced by the high number of failures in CRM implementation in organizations and the resulting disappointments. The goal of this dissertation is_ to study emerging issues and trends in CRM, including the effect of computer software and the accompanying new management processes on organizations, and the dynamics of the alignment of marketing, sales and services, and all other functions responsible for delivering customers a satisfying experience. In order to understand CRM better a content analysis of more than a hundred articles and documents from academic and industry sources was undertaken using a new methodological twist to the traditional method. An Internet domain name (http://crm.fiu.edu) was created for the purpose of this research by uploading an initial one hundred plus abstracts of article~ and documents onto it to form a knowledge database. Once the database was formed a search engine was developed to enable the search of abstracts using relevant CRM keywords to reveal emergent dominant CRM topics. The ultimate aim of this website is to serve as an information hub for CRM research, as well as a search engine where interested parties can enter CRM -relevant keywords or phrases to access abstracts, as well as submit abstracts to enrich the knowledge hub. Research questions were investigated and answered by content analyzing the interpretation and discussion of dominant CRM topics and then amalgamating the findings. This was supported by comparisons within and across individual, paired, and sets-of-three occurrences of CRM keywords in the article abstracts. Results show that there is a lack of holistic thinking and discussion of CRM in both academics and industry which is required to understand how the people, process, and technology in CRM impact each other to affect successful implementation. Industry has to get their heads around CRM and holistically understand how these important dimensions affect each other. Only then will organizational learning occur, and overtime result in superior processes leading to strong profitable customer relationships and a hard to imitate competitive advantage.

Background: There is a knowledge gap in the B2B-businesses adoption of inbound marketing strategies. The B2B sector has a substantial economic impact on the society and their marketing activities need to adapt towards the digital era. In the Swedish market, this has not yet been sufficiently researched up until this point. Purpose: This study serves to provide insight in key issues and problems when B2B businesses incorporate inbound marketing strategies. The maturity in the Swedish B2B market aims to be investigated and implementation problems to be highlighted. This information could aid Swedish B2B businesses in the future by becoming aware of issues beforehand. Also, this can give B2B businesses beneficial insights when the sector is increasingly adopting inbound marketing in the future. Method: In order to achieve in-depth understanding on the subject, a qualitative study with an exploratory design was conducted. By judgemental sampling methods, the research incorporates insights by knowledgeable industry professionals. Empirical findings were conducted through semi-structured interviews in which participants were encouraged to discuss inbound marketing in a B2B context in both detailed and broader terms. Conclusion: This study show that digital marketing is widely adopted in a B2B context, but inbound marketing strategy maturity is difficult to measure on a scale from this type of research. Key issues to implementation are organisational issues within a business, difficulty to determine goals, lack of knowledge in management about digital channels and possibilities, in addition to changing behaviour by B2B sales representatives. The future is looking bright for inbound marketing strategies even after the GDPR takes effect in May 2018, this study has shown.

Mobile television ( TV ) is a relatively new and unknown field of communication. Thus, role players in this field of communication find themselves in a new context for relationship. This raises the question as to what the key challenges in the relationship between content providers and users in mobile TV involve. More specifically, the following questions should be answered. Does mobile TV display particular characteristics of new media? If so, then how could content providers meet the challenge of understanding the user profile in mobile TV as a new medium? Also, how could content providers meet the challenge of adapting content provision according to the user experience of mobile TV as a new medium? This research paper explores these questions through means of an explorative literature study of relevant sources. Firstly, it provides a conceptual framework of mobile TV as well as an understanding of mobile TV within the greater context of new media. Secondly, it presents a means to understand the user profile in mobile N as a new medium. Lastly, it presents practical aspects that need to be considered when providing content for mobile TV as a new medium. The findings of the study can be summarised as follows: (a) Mobile TV portrays particular new media characteristics, such as, digitalisation, interactivity, hypertext, dispersal and virtuality. (b) A market-led approach should be employed in order to understand the user profile. (c) Mobile N content production should be integrated into the production process with the requirement that it is of a high quality and meets the technical and feasible limitations of the medium.

This study aimed to examine the relationship of background knowledge in relation to topic interest and reading performance of English language learners at TOBB University of Economics and Technology. For that, a reading interest questionnaire and three reading comprehension tests, which were accompanied with a 2-item background &
interest questionnaire, were developed by the researcher. These instruments were implemented on 75 English language learners studying at TOBB ETU Preparatory School. The results obtained from the instruments were analyzed through SPSS 15.0. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistics as average and standard deviation besides inferential statistics as one-way ANOVA and Spearman&rsquo
s correlation test were used. The results of the study revealed that there is a significant difference among the three reading performance scores of the language learners. Besides, the correlation of topic background knowledge and interest is highlighted for each of three reading comprehension tests, so are the significant relationships of (a) background knowledge and reading performance as well (b) topic interest and reading performance also among the results for the moderate-interest &
background knowledge and high- interest &
background knowledge tests.

The primary objective of the research described in this thesis was to determine if the location of the 'red edge' in a canopy spectrum could be used to estimate the gain yield of winter wheat. However, the red edge and grain yield relationship was indirect and so it was necessary to study the relationship between first red edge and chlorophyll (concentration and content) and then chlorophyll (concentration and content) and grain yield so as to provide the link between red edge and grain yield. The relationship between red edge recorded by an airborne imaging spectrometer and chlorophyll (concentration and content) was determined for grass and bracken during a pilot study, at Llyn Brianne, Wales. A strong positive correlation was found between red edge and chlorophyll (concentration and content). The main study concentrated on the use of a ground-based spectroradiometer in June 1992 and May 1993 to determine the relationship between red edge and chlorophyll (concentration and content) in a uniform wheat canopy at Rothamsted Experimental Station, Hertfordshire. This study site had been subdivided with each subdivision receiving a given nitrogen application and this assured a wide-range of chlorophyll concentrations in one field. In this main study the effect of nitrogen applied to the soil on chlorophyll concentration, plant height, straw weight and grain yield were investigated; in addition the relationships between red edge, chlorophyll (concentration and content) and grain yield were determined. A SPAD chlorophyll meter was also used to test its potential as a non-destructive alternative to wet laboratory assay of chlorophyll concentration.

This bachelor’s thesis is a systematic literature review focusing on the relationship between content marketing and user engagement in online brand communities. Based on the literature reviewed, it creates definitions for the main terminology, investigates the value of engagement for both online communities and marketers, creates a model of the factors motivating user engagement in online brand communities and connects this to content marketing. In addition, guidelines for engaging users in online brand communities are provided for content marketers based on the findings of the research. Finally, the thesis suggests topics for further research into online brand community management.

Religious beliefs and practices are an important source of symptom relief for individuals with schizophrenia; however, it can also be a debilitating source of symptom exacerbation. This quantitative study examined the cognitions and religious life orientations of Christian individuals both with and without a diagnosis of schizophrenia, as measured by the Rust Inventory of Schizotypal Cognitions (RISC) and the Religious Life Inventory (RLI) to examine a baseline for healthy religious cognitions. The aberrant-salience and attribution theories were used to explore the relationship between psychotic stimuli and religious attributions. One hundred and thirty Christian individuals from an outpatient mental health facility, both with and without a diagnosis of schizophrenia completed the RISC and the RLI. A t-test showed that individuals with schizophrenia scored higher on average on the schizotypal cognitions continuum than individuals without a diagnosis. The results of an ANOVA indicated that individuals with a Quest religious life orientation rendered higher scores on the schizotypal cognitions scale. This research study showed that higher levels of schizotypal cognitions were associated with low religiosity. Overall, individuals with schizophrenia showed no difference in religiosity compared to individuals without schizophrenia. This study addressed the stigma of religious practice among individuals with schizophrenia. Results of this study have positive social implications for individuals with schizophrenia and their practitioners/clergy who incorporate religion as a coping method for symptom relief.

This research assesses the relevance of eighteenth century ideas of absolute music to understanding the articulation of meaning in contemporary artistic practice. More specifically, it proposes that issues of form and content in purely instrumental music might help understand the artistic split that occurred in the second half of the twentieth century following Conceptual Art’s rejection of the dominant formalist aesthetic paradigm. It proposes that music, by nature of its immaterial ontology, provides useful insights required to re-examine the role of language, emotion, and form in contemporary conceptually aligned artistic practices. It begins by discussing theories of representation, with the intention of establishing absolute music as a theoretical model with which to examine form/content relationships, and their proximity to natural language narratives in the arts. It moves on to consider how early German Romantic notions of autonomy and feeling relate to the creative artistic frame and the formalist/conceptualist debate as exemplified by Clement Greenberg and Joseph Kosuth. Referencing Richard Wagner, it discusses the influence of musical score to the work of Wassily Kandinsky, and the evidence for heteronomous reference in abstract painting. Equally, it considers the failure of anti-formalist Conceptual artists to prevent work from being perceived by way of its formal properties and how this differs from Marcel Duchamp’s notion of the non-retinal. My approach draws on Peircian semiotic principals and Noël Carroll’s analysis of representation. It extends Leonard Meyer’s theory of embodied and designative musical meaning to consider, by way of examples drawn from Gustav Mahler’s music and twenty-first century conceptualism, the role of non-semantic content in visual art and natural language. Referencing recent findings from cognitive neuroscience, this thesis proposes that the dichotomous relationship between reason and feeling is more complex than previously thought. It concludes by considering Kant’s notion of the aesthetic idea and its implications for contemporary practice.

Psychotic illness is associated in the literature with abuse in childhood (Read, van Os, Morrison, & Ross, 2005). This literature is reviewed, focussing on the relationship between childhood abuse and delusions. The review looks to the abuse literature to suggest ways that psychological sequelae of abuse might fit with existing theories of delusions to offer a more comprehensive understanding of their origins. It is argued that current psychological models of delusions do not deal adequately with the impact of childhood abuse. A greater appreciation of this relationship is theoretically important, but also has crucial implications for the accuracy of formulations and the appropriateness of treatment.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Relationship Marketing can be defined as an ongoing process of identifying and creating new value with individual customers, and then sharing that value over a lifetime of business association. The definition incorporates a number of key concepts such as long-term commitment, open and ongoing communication, trust and interdependence, collaboration and cooperation, as well as total organisational commitment. A wide range of models and strategies describe the processes and underlying constructs and clearly distinguishes between an organisational process and a behavioral process. The organisational approach focuses on the key organisational processes, technology, culture and values as well as corporate commitment needed to make this a success. The behavioral approach focuses on the key behavioral constructs needed for successful relationship management between buyer and seller, or manufacturer and retailer, for example ongoing communication, joint planning and performance evaluation, and trust and commitment. Customer satisfaction is highlighted as a key driver of the relationship management process and a number of cases clearly indicate that satisfied customers are needed for successful Relationship Marketing. It is not only about the wining and dining, but more about adding real value that will make customers commit their lifetime business. Relationship Marketing in a monopolistic market is discussed and the question is asked why any business should implement a relationship management process when that business is dominating the market. It is quite obvious that the benefits of a relationship marketing approach will drive customer value and satisfaction to higher levels and that the future lies in retaining customers and not recruiting new customers all the time. Even in monopolistic market situations organisations will try to increase or protect market share and developing long-term relationships with customers might just provide that competitive edge needed. Relationship Marketing is clearly not only about behavioral issues ,or on the other hand about organisational systems. It is an integrated approach incorporating all key organisational processes and systems which needs to be cemented in the corporate culture and values of the business. It is also an approach that advocate very specific behavioral constructs for example trust and commitment. - Any organisation that plans to incorporate a relationship marketing approach, needs to focus on the behavioral as well as organisational aspects of business.

With only around 80 species globally, mangroves generally support low local tree species diversity while sustaining significant ecosystem services. The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function in mangroves has rarely been studied, especially when related to local forest diversity. The interdependence between biodiversity and function is important to healthy and functional mangrove ecosystems. Among the many functions of mangroves, juvenile nekton are known to utilize mangroves as their nursery habitat but the justification for this association is not clearly understood. Different plant species are expected to produce different quality of organic content derived from their respective decomposed leaf litter. These leaf litters, which mix into surrounding sediments, are expected to contain different carbon to nitrogen ratios and specific secondary metabolites, influencing its quality. Information on how organic content quality affects the juvenile nekton assemblages in mangroves is limited. This thesis assessed these questions quantitatively, using both field experiments and a laboratory experiment. The aim of this study was to enhance our understanding on how mangrove forests of different local species diversity (mixed forest of Avicennia marina and Rhizophora stylosa and monospecific forests of the two species) can affect the leaf litter decomposition rate, organic content and organic content quality in the sediment, including their adjacent mudflats. This information was then used to assess if the organic content quality from decomposing leaves and sediment influenced the juvenile nekton and invertebrate assemblages associated with the forest stands. The influence of the structural complexity in terms of root density of different forests on the juvenile nekton and invertebrate assemblages was also assessed. Finally, the influence of local tree diversity on the micro-habitat selection by the juvenile caridean shrimp (Palaemon debilis) was investigated in a laboratory choice experiment. Sampling of juvenile nekton and invertebrates was done in three mangrove forests at three locations in the wet and dry seasons in eastern Australia using the Simulated Aquatic Microhabitat (SAMs) method (Kneib, 1997). The animals’ assemblages in the three mangrove forests were characterized and quantified. For each forest, (i) the decomposition rate of A. marina and R. stylosa leaves; (ii) the relationship between animal assemblages and the organic content quality in the sediment; (iii) the relationship between animal assemblages and the structural complexity (root density); and (iv) the relationship between the isotopic signatures of the animal assemblages and the isotopic signatures of the forests were investigated. Juvenile nekton and invertebrate assemblages were highly variable among replicate samples, among different locations, forest types and seasons. The organic content of decomposing leaves and sediment, as well as the structural complexity in terms of root density, also varied spatially. While the factor location was a significant driver of the differences, the effect of forest types (local forest diversity) did not show a similar pattern across locations. The pattern also varied between the mangrove and mudflat habitats. For the decomposition study, it was anticipated that both A. marina and R. stylosa leaves would decompose faster in the mixed forest, however, there was no significant difference in the decomposition rates of the two species in different habitats. In mangrove habitats, sediment organic content was higher in the monospecific R. stylosa forest compared to the mixed forest and monospecific A. marina forest. However, in mudflat habitats significant difference in sediment organic content was only found when adjacent to monospecific R. stylosa forests or mixed forests. In mangrove habitats, the sediment was of lower quality in the mixed forest than in the R. stylosa forest. However, in mudflat habitats, there was no difference between the mixed and monospecific forests. The abundance of juvenile fish and invertebrates was higher only in the mangrove habitat of the mixed forest but not on the adjacent mudflat. In mangrove habitats, the number of species per family and species richness showed significant differences between the mixed forest and both monospecific R. stylosa and A. marina forests. In mangrove and mudflat habitats, Spearman’s rho showed that sediment quality was not related to animal abundance. The quality of decomposed leaf litter was higher in the mixed forest except for A. marina leaves in the adjacent mudflat. As expected, the quality of decomposed leaf litter improved over the decomposition time for all forest types in both habitats. Irrespective of forest type, animal abundance was not related to root density. However, based on location, Spearman rho showed that root density in Tallebudgera Creek was related to animal abundance in all forest types. Animal abundance related to root density during the wet season was related to mixed forest and monospecific Avicennia marina forest. Therefore, local forest diversity showed no clear influence in the relationship between animal abundance to both sediment quality in both habitats and root density in mangrove habitats. The δ13C of the leaves of A. marina and R. stylosa was generally different from those of the animals. Even though the mudflat adjacent to the mixed forest had higher quality of decomposed leaf litter (R. stylosa only), it was unrelated to the animal abundance and assemblages. The δ13C of R. stylosa leaves was close to the δ13C of one of the fish species from the same forest and this indicates R. stylosa potentially contributed to the diet of this fish. Results of the laboratory choice experiment indicated that the identity of mangrove forests influenced micro-habitat selection in the juveniles of Palaemon debilis. This response is probably mediated by olfactory cues from the mangrove leaf litter. This study is the first to show that P. debilis is able to detect and distinguish water-borne chemical cues from three different types of mangrove leaves. The chemicals released by the leaf litter of R. stylosa apparently acted as a positive cue that attracted the juvenile shrimps.

In this master’s thesis a model for transcription analysis for a one-to-one Relationship ofInquiry were constructed and presented. The model was modified from the model fortranscript analysis in Community of Inquiry. The original three presences from Community ofInquiry, teaching, cognitive and social presence, were chosen to be adapted to Relationship ofInquiry together with a fourth presence, emotional presence. In this study the online coachingproject Math coach were used for the construction and testing of the model.A total of 60 conversations ranging over more than 3000 message units were in this thesisanalysed to test the model. From the data collected it was seen that the coaches and thecoachees had an almost 50-50 share of the message units. Furthermore the presences in thedata collected where distributed so that the most units where coded to cognitive presence, thenin descending order: teaching, emotional, and social presence. In this master’s thesis themodel for transcript analysis is presented and the results are discussed.

Empirical evidence shows that successful marriages among African Americans are often more egalitarian than hierarchical; however, there was no known research that explored how curricula developers depict non-conventional gender roles in relationship education designed for African Americans. This content analysis involved exploration of nonconventional gender roles in three relationship education curricula developed for African Americans. Analyses included both the manifest (explicit) and latent (implicit) messages of the curricula to determine whether portrayals of gender roles were conventional or non-conventional. The PIES (Political/Intercultural/Economic/Social) model of marital dimensions allowed analysis of marital gender roles using an organizational analysis model that included the political (power structures and decision-making), intercultural (values and beliefs about manhood and womanhood), economic (employment and education of the couple), and social (domestic roles and responsibilities) dimensions of marriage. Results of the study revealed that the intercultural dimension tended toward conventional characteristics, even when the political, economic, and social dimensions were non-conventional. The results suggested that curricula developers design curricula based on conventional contexts of marriage that do not include African Americans’ historical context of marital gender roles in the United States. Two of the curricula described titular type leadership that combines aspects of conventional and nonconventional gender roles in the PIES model and is most effective when husbands practice servant leadership. Explicit instruction about gender roles through the PIES model was a suggestion to help resolve the cognitive dissonance created by conflicting ontological perspectives, especially in Biblical contexts.

A discriminant analysis using the sexual standards of permissiveness with affection and the traditional standard as dependent variables, and the moral constructs of egoism, hedonism, nonhedonism, utilitarianism, deontology, rul e-utilitarianism, actutilitarianism, rule-orientation, and act-orientation as independent (predictor) variables was run. This analysis resulted in a final model in which egoism, hedonism, nonhedonism, act-utilitarianism, and ruleorientation were found to be the polarizing variables between the traditional group and the permissiveness with affection group.

School districts are increasingly adopting 1-to-1 technology initiatives to support 21st century teaching and learning; yet, there are still many challenges with the effective integration of technology into teacher instructional practices. Teacher's technological, pedagogical, content knowledge (TPACK) is an integral part in planning the instructional process for effective integration. In this quantitative study, teachers' knowledge of technology, content, and pedagogy was examined through the lens of TPACK and its relationship to their lesson design practices. Two validated TPACK instruments were used to collect data on 117 in-service teachers in a large, urban school district with a 1-to-1 technology initiative. A MANOVA and correlational analysis were performed, and results of this study indicated there were no statistically significant differences between teachers' constructs of TPACK and their years of experience in a 1-to-1 technology initiative. However, statistical significance was found between teachers' constructs of TPACK and their content area. Additionally, a correlation was found between teachers' TPACK, their lesson design practices, and design disposition. The results of this study may positively impact social change by informing school administrators and other educational change leaders in the planning of teacher instructional support to further develop teachers in the implementation of technology integration to support the 21st century learning needs of today's students.

Harder kernels in barley are thought to be a factor affecting the modification of the endosperm during malting by restricting water and enzyme movement within the endosperm. The traditional method used in the malting industry to determine barley endosperm vitreousness is by visual assessment. Since this method is subjective, laborious and requires training, an alternative method is needed. Similarly, the causes and factors influencing kernel hardness are uncertain. The prime objectives of this study were: to identify an appropriate method to quantify kernel hardness; investigate the relationship between kernel hardness and endosperm composition; and to investigate the relationship between barley variety and environmental influences on endosperm composition in relation to the kernel hardness of malting barley.

Television programs continue to play a significant role in a teenager's life as they become involved in dating relationships. Adolescence is a pivotal period of life. Teenagers' usage of media, especially television, provides a source of norms and scripts of what a relationship looks like. The portrayals of sexual content in teen programs has become a source of sexual information instead of parents and peers. Many parents are unaware of the sexual content teen programs deliver to their audiences. This study analyzes how teen dramas create expectations through their portrayal of relationships and intimacy on television. Five teen television programs were gathered to analyze the frequency of sexual behaviors depicted to a teen audience. This study investigates the ages, genders, types of relationships, and sexual behaviors shown and implied. The findings show all five programs consisted of high amounts of sexual behavior throughout their first seasons, which suggest that the entertainment industry for teen viewers is a powerful tool that plays a significant role in a teenager's sexual socialization.

South Africa is the first country in the world to offer Mathematical Literacy as a school subject. This subject was introduced in 2006 as an alternative to Mathematics in the Further Education and Training band. The purpose of this subject is to provide learners with an awareness and understanding of the role that mathematics plays in the modern world, but also with opportunities to engage in real-life problems in different contexts. A problem is the beliefs some people in and outside the classroom have regarding this subject such as teachers believing ML is the dumping ground for mathematics underperformers (Mbekwa, 2007). Another problem is the belief of some principals that any nonmathematics teacher can teach ML. In practice there is Mathematics teachers who teach ML in the same way that they teach Mathematics; non-Mathematics teachers who in many cases lack the necessary mathematical content knowledge and skills to teach ML competently; and Mathematics teachers who adapted their practices to teach ML using different approaches than those required for teaching Mathematics. Limited in-depth research has been done on the ML teachers, what they believe and what knowledge is required to teach this subject effectively and proficiently. The purpose of this study is to investigate the way in which ML is taught in a limited number of classrooms with the view to exploring the relationship between ML teachers’ knowledge and beliefs and their instructional practices. According to Artzt, Armour-Thomas and Curcio (2008) the instructional practice of the teacher plays out in the classroom where teachers’ goals, knowledge and beliefs serve as the driving force behind their instructional efforts to guide and mentor learners in their search for knowledge. To accomplish this aim, an in-depth case study was conducted to explore the nature of teachers’ knowledge and beliefs about ML as manifested in their instructional practices. A qualitative research approach was used in which observations and interviews served as data collection techniques enabling me to interpret the reality as I became part of the lives of the teachers. My study revealed that there is a dynamic but complex relationship between ML teachers’ knowledge and beliefs and their instructional practices. The teachers’ knowledge, but not their stated beliefs were reflected in their instructional practices. Conversely, in one case, the teacher’s instructional practice also had a positive influence on her knowledge and beliefs. It was further revealed that mathematics teacher training and teaching experience played a significant role in the productivity of the teachers’ practices. The findings suggest that although mathematical content knowledge is required to develop PCK, it is teaching experience that plays a crucial role in the development of teachers’ PCK. Although the study’s results cannot be generalised due to the small sample, I believe that the findings concerning the value of teachers’ knowledge and the contradictions between their stated beliefs and practices could possibly contribute to teacher training. Curriculum decision-makers should realise that the teaching of ML requires specially trained, competent, dedicated teachers who value the subject. This exploratory study concludes with recommendations for further research.

South Africa has a unique cultural, historical, socio-economic and linguistic contextual complexity that influences the implementation the intended curriculum and educational policies. The contextual complexity continues to result in Science teachers entering into the teaching profession with a wide spread diversity in background and qualifications. The secondary data analysis used a concurrent mixed methods approach (QUAL + quan) to explore the interconnection between teacher characteristics, classroom practices and learner achievement in Physical Science. The primary sample consisted of 18 schools that were stratified by district and quintile. From the available data, nineteen Grade 12 Physical Science teachers with varying levels of qualifications and experience were analysed. A combination of qualitative and quantitative instruments, specifically, Science teacher questionnaires, Science lesson observations and Science teacher interviews, were explored. The data was analysed quantitatively using descriptive statistics, frequency tables and Pearson correlation coefficients. The qualitative data involved content analysis and the presentation of case studies and the themes that emerged. Significant Pearson correlations indicate a positive relationship between years of related experience and pass rates and also pointed to an interconnection between professional qualifications, related experience and learner achievement. Differences in teacher characteristics were also indicators of competency in content knowledge and ultimately influenced classroom practices. Four case studies are offered in an attempt to provide in-depth descriptions of the teacher characteristics and practices for Grade 12 Physical Science teachers in Gauteng. Recommendations for future research, teacher training and policy implementation are presented. The diversity in teacher characteristics, particularly in Physical Science classrooms, influences the classroom practices that teachers select in their day-to-day teaching and impacts learner outcomes in terms of achievement.

The development of social media has increased the usage and prevalence of content marketing. This have enhanced the pressures on marketers to manage and leverage this tool. Also, consumers interaction with valuable content leads to a stronger relationship with the brand which further might enhance the brand image. Hence, this paper carries out a quantitative research with the purpose to explain if questionable content marketing on social media have a negative impact on brand image. The researchers used questionnaires as their method for collection of empirical data. The respondents were gathered based on a convenience sampling. The questionnaires were out sent out to 204 participants, were the aim was to investigate if the respondents view of a brand changes negatively, after being exposed to scenarios that were constituted by questionable content marketing. It was analyzed through an ANOVA test. The overall conclusions after gathering and analyzing the data, implicate that questionable content marketing have a negative effect on brand image. Therefore, it becomes important for managers to carefully evaluate their content marketing strategy on social media in order to avoid questionable content marketing.

A study examining the content strategies within Twitter posts, from nine charitable nonprofit organizations was conducted. The content analysis was conducted to identify content strategies (relationship cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) behind each Twitter post from these nine organizations, within a one-week period. The study also looked at levels of engagement on each tweet as well as interactivity from the organization. The results showed that these nine charitable nonprofit organizations were primarily using stewardship strategies and techniques in their posts. The study also found that relationship cultivation yielded higher levels of retweets and that the relationship cultivation and solicitation combination strategy received higher levels of likes, while the organizations lacked in interactivity (two-way communication). The results from this study add a level of Twitter analysis to the ongoing research of fundraising on social media, and provide questions for future research.

This study examines the views of the relationship between science and faith and the understandings of biological evolution, geologic history and the nature of science, with emphasis on the use of evidence, held by United Methodist ministers, pre-service science teachers, and pre-service language arts/social studies teachers. By completing a nineteen and a twenty-item, combination multiple-choice/open-ended questionnaire and individual interviews, participants demonstrated a wide array of scientific understandings and articulated in some cases how those understandings inform their views of the relationship between alternative ways of knowing. Findings included little disparity overall between participant groups' scientific understandings, although slightly more ministers demonstrated more informed understandings of the concepts assessed. Additionally, findings indicated that pre-service science teachers viewed scientific literacy as less important than other participant groups and few participants reported any change in their views of science as a result of formal post-secondary instruction. Almost all participants considered evidence to be used in faith but little to no distinction was made between scientific, historical, and faith-based types of evidence. Recommendations are included regarding curriculum development for science teacher and religious education, as well as implications for potential partnerships between the science educators and clergy.

Teacher knowledge and beliefs influence the quality of instruction teachers are able to implement. This study was designed to help educators and mentors of novice teachers understand the relationship between literacy pedagogical content knowledge and literacy teacher efficacy beliefs and changes to this relationship during the course of student teaching.

Using a sample of 36 pre-service teachers assigned to student teaching in kindergarten, first or second grade classrooms, literacy pedagogical content knowledge was measured in a multiple-choice assessment that covered a variety of early literacy instructional areas including phonology, orthography, vocabulary, morphology and comprehension. Literacy teaching efficacy beliefs was measured using a self-report questionnaire. Participants completed the survey at two time points, at the beginning and end of student teaching.

To determine if a literacy pedagogical content knowledge and literacy teaching efficacy beliefs demonstrated a relationship, Pearson correlations were calculated at both time points. Results of this study suggest that these constructs are not related and operate independently. Additionally this study suggested that while literacy teaching efficacy beliefs improved significantly over the course of student teaching, literacy pedagogical content knowledge did not. Results from this study can inform teacher educators, mentors of novice teaches and professional development programmers on the relationship of literacy pedagogical content knowledge and literacy teaching efficacy beliefs in pre-service teachers.

A correlational study investigated the nature of excuses, including the relationship of excuse complexity, uniqueness, frequency, and success to the level of knowledge the recipient has about the excuse giver. Analysis of results from responses of 121 participants to questionnaires describing excuses to employers, teachers, parents, and spouse/boy/girlfriends found that the complexity and uniqueness of excuses vary positively with the knowledge level of the recipient, but only when an unequal power relationship exists between the recipient and the excuse giver. Excuses to recipients with a low personal knowledge level of the excuse giver, such as employers or teachers, tended to be simple in nature, contained a minimum amount of information, and were usually common and frequently occurring. In contrast, excuses to recipients with a high personal knowledge of the excuse giver, such as parents who lived with the participants, tended to be complex in nature, contained significantly larger amounts of information, were generally more specific to the excuse giver and less frequently occurring. Old excuses were used more than new excuses in all contexts. Previously used excuses were also more frequent in low or neutral confidence conditions, and were more likely to be successful. Excuses were more successful to employers or teachers than to parents or spouse/boy girlfriends. Different categories emerged for different recipients of the excuses: the illness category was used most in the work context, and the miscellaneous category was used most in the parent and spouse/boy/girlfriend contexts. The influence of external control, and short and long term intimacy factors on the nature of excuses was discussed.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the third most important crop in the world after rice and wheat. Potato tubers are rich in starch, but also contain minor amounts of phenolic compounds. The chlorogenic acid isomer 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) is the predominant phenolic acid in potato. The main aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between phenolic content and starch digestibility in vitro and in vivo. Firstly, the effect of 5-CQA on digestion of commercial potato starch by porcine pancreatic alpha amylase (PPAA) was investigated. The results showed that co- and pre-incubation of PPAA with 5-CQA significantly reduced PPAA activity in a dose dependent manner with an IC50 value of about 2 mg mL-1. Lineweaver-Burk plots indicated that 5-CQA exerts a mixed type inhibition as km increased and Vmax decreased. Secondly, in vitro starch digestion was performed on steam cooked tubers from five varieties of potato (Desiree, Mozart, Rooster, Maris Piper and Maris Peer) with varying phenolic content. 5-CQA content of peeled tuber tissue ranged from 10.36 to 29.46 mg 100g-1 dry weight (DW) in raw tubers and 6.51 to 21.24 mg 100g-1 DW in cooked tubers. With the exception of Desiree, 5-CQA levels decreased after cooking. The composition of the tubers in term of dry matter (DM), total starch (TS), free sugars, starch properties (amylose and starch granule structure) were also determined. Significant differences in digestibility by PPAA alone were observed between potato varieties when measured as area under curve (AUC) of glucose released in vitro (p ≤ 0.05). Rooster had the highest and Maris Piper the lowest AUC. Similar results were obtained when an in vitro digestion that simulated gastric (including pepsin) and intestinal (including amyloglucosidase AMG) digestion was used to calculate hydrolysis index (HI) and estimated glycaemic index (eGI). Finally, the digestibility of potato was measured in vivo using steamed tubers from Desiree, Rooster and Maris Piper. Standard glycaemic index (GI) methodology was followed. The results showed that Rooster has the highest GI (120), followed by Maris Piper (109) and Desiree (98). The differences were not statistically significant. Strong and positive correlations were observed between in vivo GI and eGI (p ≤ 0.01). It was observed that estimated glycaemic index (eGI) of cooked potato negatively correlated with 5-CQA (r=-0.91, p ≤ 0.05 ) and in vivo glycaemic response (GI) negatively correlated with TPC and 5-CQA (r =-0.82,-0.91) (p ≤ 0.05) respectively. Principle component analysis indicated that starch digestibility is affected by multiple factors including phenolic, dry matter, starch content, starch granule size and crystalline lamella structure. It appears that the same single factor does not strongly determine digestibility in all varieties.
