This research work aims at the reconstruction of literary spaces created by four great female authors of the twentieth century. Analysed individually or from a comparative perspective, the texts solicit a reflection on the representation of space in literature produced by women. The focus of the investigation is the dynamic contrast that, at the moment of perception, is established between the ‘internal’, and therefore subjective, dimension and the ‘external’ dimension, regulated by the social context in which the subject moves. The work consists of three parts: the first part establishes the parameters within which the research is organised; the second part investigates the process of reappropriation of the city – a place of almost exclusive male prerogative – by the protagonists of the proposed novels and their “walking down the street” as a device of spatial organisation. In the third and last part, the female perception of the domestic space is analysed. A place of female confinement par excellence, it shows, even in literature, an ambivalent character, as an expression of abuse and affection at the same time. From the ‘spatial’ reinterpretation of the proposed works, therefore, both the intimate representation of space and the historical-social evaluation of the context in which the protagonists, and their own authors, move, emerge.

Chapter 9, Approaches to Programming, provided a general discussion regarding the approaches to DBS programming. The focus of Chapter 9 was on the underlying electroneurophysiological principles rather an explicit algorithm that addressed every possible circumstance. Chapters 11, Chapter 12, and Chapter 13 discussed approaches in the context of specific DBS targets. These approaches emphasized interpreting the DBS responses to visualize the location of the DBS contacts in the unique regional anatomy of the individual patient. For example, the production of paresthesias at stimulation currents insufficient to produce clinical benefit with DBS in the vicinity of the STN indicates that the DBS lead position is probably too posterior. This chapter gives an algorithm that takes the programmer step by step through the process of positioning DBS leads and contacts, and determining stimulation levels for optimal results.

It begins with a brief description of PCARS, explaining what a point contact is and how it can be made and the conditions under which a PC is ballistic, as well as why and to what extent a PC between normal metals is spectroscopic. It then discusses the basics of Andreev reflection and the length scales in mesoscopic systems before considering the limits of applicability of PCARS for spectroscopy of ‘small’ superconductors. Finally, it reviews some examples of PCARS in quasi-0D, quasi-1D and quasi-2D superconductors.

Montague and Kaplan began a revolution in semantics, which promised to explain how a univocal expression could make distinct truth-conditional contributions in its various occurrences. The idea was to treat context as a parameter at which a sentence is semantically evaluated. But the revolution has stalled. One salient problem comes from recurring demonstratives: “He is tall and he is not tall”. For the sentence to be true at a context, each occurrence of the demonstrative must make a different truth-conditional contribution. But this difference cannot be accounted for by standard parameter sensitivity. Semanticists, consoled by the thought that this ambiguity would ultimately be needed anyhow to explain anaphora, have been too content to posit massive ambiguities in demonstrative pronouns. This chapter aims to revived the parameter revolution by showing how to treat demonstrative pronouns as univocal while providing an account of anaphora that doesn’t end up re-introducing the ambiguity.

This commentary focuses on Article 4.4 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning reference to contract or statement as a whole. Art 4.4 refers to the internal context of the contract or statement. This is a factor that is relevant in contractual interpretation, and it would have been possible to include it amongst the circumstances listed in Art 4.3. The drafters chose to follow the more traditional approach of the Romanistic systems, which devote a separate provision to this factor. The holistic approach advocated for the reading of contracts and statements in Art 4.4 corresponds to the basic hermeneutic principle that words cannot be understood in isolation. Art 4.4 is concerned with the internal context that is confined to the parameters of the contract or statement itself. This commentary discusses inconsistencies in the contract or statement and the weight of arguments from the internal context.

This book develops a minimalist approach to cross-linguistic morphosyntactic variation. The principal claim is that the essential insight of the principles-and-parameters approach to variation can be maintained—albeit in a somewhat different guise—in the context of the minimalist programme for linguistic theory. The central idea is to organize the parameters of Universal Grammar (UG) into hierarchies which define the ways in which properties of individually variant categories and features may act in concert. The hierarchies define macro-, meso-, and microparameters as a function of the position of parametric options in a given hierarchy. A further leading idea, which is consistent with the overall goal of the minimalist programme to reduce the content of UG, is that the parameter hierarchies are not directly determined by UG. They are emergent properties stemming from the interaction of the three factors in language design. Universal Grammar, the first factor, provides a template for the underspecification of the formal features in terms of which parameters are defined. The second and third factors determine the organization of these formal options into hierarchies: two third-factor effects (Feature Economy and Input Generalization) play a central role. Cross-linguistic variation in word order, null subjects, incorporation, verb-movement, case/alignment, wh-movement, and negation are all analysed in the light of this approach. This book represents a significant new contribution to the formal study of cross-linguistic morphosyntactic variation on both the empirical and theoretical levels.

One way that American urbanites have traditionally made sense of the city’s landscape is through the concept of the neighborhood. Clustering in urban neighborhoods brought immigrant Americans into contact with members of other ethnic communities. Relations between groups varied from hostile to amicable, with variations depending on gender, age, generation, group size, and city size. Interethnic alliances, however, stopped at racial lines; until the late twentieth century, few white Americans were willing to live in racially integrated neighborhoods. In the late twentieth century, the idea of neighborhood showed remarkable persistence despite the changes in American immigrant demographics. The purpose of this essay is to sketch out parameters for future scholars to use in assessing the power of neighborhoods in analyzing American ethnic history.

Chapter 39 concerns the effect of mistake in contract law. Traditionally, contract law has recognized four categories of mistake: misunderstanding, unilateral mistake, mutual mistake, and mistranscription. The names of these categories fail to describe contractual mistakes according to their functional characteristics, and many of the rules that govern these categories turn on elements that are of only limited functional significance, easy to manipulate, or both. The first step in developing a functional analysis of mistake is to analyze contractual mistakes on the basis of their character. The second step is to analyze the rules that should govern each type of mistake based on policy, morality, and experience. This chapter sets out the general parameter of these analyses.

This chapter discusses the key interaction–hyperfine coupling–which underlies most of phenomena in the field of electron and nuclear spin dynamics. This interaction originates from magnetic interaction between the nuclear and electron spins. For conduction band electrons in III–V or II–VI semiconductors, it is reduced to a Fermi contact interaction whose strength is proportional to the probability of finding an electron at the nucleus. A more complex situation is realized for valence band holes where hole Bloch functions vanish at the nuclei. Here the hyperfine interaction is of the dipole–dipole type. The modification of the hyperfine coupling Hamiltonian in nanosystems is also analyzed. The chapter contains also an overview of experimental data aimed at determination of the hyperfine interaction parameters in semiconductors and semiconductor nanostructures.

The monograph analyzes various welded metal structures. The design of reinforcing cages of round, hot-rolled, cold-rolled, cold-flattened steel of periodic profile has been studied. During the welding process, the possibility of splashes has been established that affects the strength of the welded joint, and is associated with large energy losses. This phenomenon is accepted as an indicator of the quality of the welding process. The process of heating by contact welding of crossed round rods is described. It was found that the higher the current, the relatively later the limiting state sets in, the shorter the welding duration and the less the possibility of overheating the nearcontact region. Issues of rational technology of resistance welding of reinforced concrete reinforcement have been developed. The parameters of the mode of electric contact welding of crossing round rods are determined. The publication may be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in the problem of studying energy-saving technologies for the manufacture of metal structures with rod elements, including researchers, teachers and students of higher educational institutions in the field of energy conservation.

The Doctoral Thesis focusses on developing new procedures for the design and evaluation of high content reclaimed asphalt mixtures containing rejuvenators and on investigating their long-term mechanical performance and environmental impact. A systematic research was conducted to develop a new procedure for preparation of high reclaimed asphalt content mixtures in laboratory. A stage extraction method was developed as part of this work to extract multiple layers of binder from reclaimed asphalt mixtures. Further, the aspects of pavement design have been integrated into life cycle assessment technique to compute the environmental impacts for high rate of asphalt recycling.

Current understanding of syntactic variation and change relies on the notion of parameters of varying magnitude (micro- and macroparameters). This chapter focuses on the flipside of parameter change, namely the retention and survival of synthetic morphological structure in a context of widespread analyticization. The global effects of synthetic-to-analytic drift are examined in two diachronic scenarios: one in which the process has almost, though not entirely been completed (Coptic Egyptian), and another one in which the process is still under way (Brazilian Portuguese). Coptic has gone very far in abandoning its former synthetic features and thus exhibits a high degree of analyticity. In Brazilian Portuguese, the analyticization process is an advanced state, with synthetically inflected tenses exhibiting a decreasing productivity and gradually being replaced by the corresponding auxiliary verb constructions in the spoken language. The restriction on verb movement is a side effect of ongoing analyticization that affects language’s word order.

Ventilator rate, volume, and time parameters are interrelated directly, mechanically, and physiologically, and interactions between intrinsic pulmonary physio-mechanics, pathology and the effects of mechanical ventilation complex. The physiological consequences of mechanical ventilation and risks of ventilator-induced trauma may be exacerbated by lung pathology. Programming of ventilator parameters should be considered within the context of an individualized ventilatory strategy to achieve adequate gas exchange, while minimizing attendant risks of mechanical ventilation. Recommended strategies should be modified within accepted limits to mitigate disease-specific risks. Parameters should subsequently be titrated against blood gas- and ventilator-derived targets, and other clinical variables.

Epistemic universalism, the view that epistemic intuitions are culturally universal, plays an important role in underwriting ordinary practice in contemporary epistemology. But is it true? Here the authors present several studies that examine epistemic universalism by looking at the relationships between cultural background, folk knowledge attribution, and salience effects, whereby mention of an unrealized possibility of error undermines our willingness to attribute knowledge. These studies suggest that there may be structural universals, universal epistemic parameters that influence epistemic intuitions, but that these parameters can vary in such a way that certain epistemic intuitions, in either their strength or propositional content, display patterns of genuine cross-cultural diversity.

Discontinuous structures produced by edge-fronting represent one distinctive feature of Latin regarding Romance. This difference follows from the head parameter: whereas Romance is consistently head-initial, Latin fluctuates between different settings as a result of its occupying an intermediate position in the gradual shift from head-finality to head-initiality. In turn, this difference in the head parameter is responsible for the observed variation in edge-fronting, since its setting determines the application of antilocality in constraining movement. Concretely, if head-finality is the output of a roll-up operation raising the complement to the specifier to the left of its head, suspension of antilocality constitutes a sine qua non for head-final languages like Latin. In Romance, by contrast, the head parameter is aligned with the head-initial setting such that roll-up (hence antilocal) movement never arises. This investigation thus derives from the different settings of the head parameter a concomitant parametrization in the role of antilocality.

This article deals with beta ensembles. Classical random matrix ensembles contain a parameter β, taking on the values 1, 2, and 4. This parameter, which relates to the underlying symmetry, appears as a repulsion sβ between neighbouring eigenvalues for small s. β may be regarded as a continuous positive parameter on the basis of different viewpoints of the eigenvalue probability density function for the classical random matrix ensembles - as the Boltzmann factor for a log-gas or the squared ground state wave function of a quantum many-body system. The article first considers log-gas systems before discussing the Fokker-Planck equation and the Calogero-Sutherland system. It then describes the random matrix realization of the β-generalization of the circular ensemble and concludes with an analysis of stochastic differential equations resulting from the case of the bulk scaling limit of the β-generalization of the Gaussian ensemble.
