This thesis investigates the potential for return migrants to have an impact on development in the small-state case of Guyana, relative to the non-migrant population. To do this in a fairly comprehensive manner, three specific questions are posed. Firstly, what are the differences among return migrants, non-returning migrants, and non-migrants? Secondly, what are the determinants of return migration to Guyana? And thirdly, what are the potential consequences of return migration to Guyana? The first question allows for an understanding of critical differences among return migrants, non-returning migrants, and non-migrants. This provides information on where, potentially, return migrants show important differences relative to the other groups, and if those differences observed would be useful for development in Guyana. Further, I explore the sustainability of return migration through the concept of mixed embeddedness, looking into the influences of return migrants' desire for re-emigration. Hence, answering the first question is an early signal of where, potentially, return migrants demonstrate attributes that arguably are useful for development in the origin country. In answering the second question, an insight is provided into what determines return. In particular, determinants of return take on a more real-world context, factoring a key eligibility of policy – that of duration of time spent abroad. Lastly, given the multidimensional link between migration and development, the final question tries to understand what the actual nexus between return migration and development is for the case of Guyana. Especially, I explore the direct and indirect impact of return migration, whether return migrants are likely to be of more use in development over non-migrants, and the measurable indicators of this nexus for Guyana. To facilitate the analysis, the thesis first justifies why it is useful to revisit return migration as a potentially useful impetus for development. Here is where the small state case is presented as still valid. It then delves into the relevance of return migration and development linkages for the particular case of Guyana. In the process, it reveals why Guyana is an interesting case, contextualizing the theoretical perspectives that help to rationalize the general arguments, for and against, why individuals leave and some return. The account then notes, where data are available, existing policy practices in some small states as they relate to how governments demonstrate an interest in return migration as useful for origin-state development. The above summarizes the content of chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 3 explains in detail the mixed-method approach used to collect the qualitative and quantitative data required to develop the critical arguments and research results presented in chapters 4, 5, and 6. A two-stage stratified sampling approach with disproportionate fractions was used to collect data on 451 return migrants and 528 non-migrants. This data was pooled with 210 non-returning migrants captured in an online survey using an ethno-survey framework. Additionally, qualitative interviews with representatives of several local institutions with responsibility for return migration policy, data, and concessions delivery were conducted to support the quantitative framework. Notwithstanding the fairly large sample size, the return migration and development story told in this thesis not only dwells on averages, but also on individual reflections of return contained in the data. For the analysis, a mix of standard and novel approaches is utilized. The transnationalism approach, which recognizes the current characterization of the fluidity of migration, combined with the capabilities approach to migration and development, enables a general view on how the nexus is manifested in development outcomes at the individual level. These are the main reference points adapted to guide the conversation on determinants and consequences respectively. Techniques employed for the analysis of determinants and consequences are survival analysis and exploratory factor analysis, including the OLS and Ordered Probit models. The sample demonstrated that return migrants were different on personal and socioeconomic attributes. Migrants returned mainly from countries within the CARICOM region rather than from those further away such as the North America and Other International areas. Return migrants have a tendency to remit prior to returning, even acquiring personal assets before, which can be linked to their duration spent abroad and their host location. On returning, returnees in the sample differed from non-migrants, especially in the areas of educational attainment and current earnings in terms of monthly household income. International migration in terms of the level of development at the host location is an imperative. Return migrants' exposure and enhanced capacity are potentially useful for development. But, the jury is still out on whether this is harnessed to fill development gaps in the origin country Guyana. Nevertheless, returnees can be viewed as ‘elites' which puts this group among those most equipped to (re)-emigrate. Hence, desires for re-emigration are vested not only in the institutional and structural stressors, but also reflect individual attributes of return migrants. Return migration thus does not necessarily complete the migration cycle. Return, demonstrated in the sample mostly by those in the CARICOM region, has been subjected to a number of personal characteristics – migration status among other reasons. Structural factors have not been captured well to reflect the differences in the host countries to that of origin, but something is definitely happening at host locations that engenders the agency of returnees. Capabilities and achievements of migrants returning are indicative of systems and structures at the host locations. Even in the presence of heterogeneity among returnees, return migrants seem to have a positive impact on development in Guyana relative to non-migrants. Returning was also importantly a function the migrant's position/membership in the household at origin, as social attachments inclined them to return. But their contribution on return correlates with the duration spent abroad; the longer time giving migrants better opportunities to prepare, remit, and acquire local assets in some cases. The signal given, therefore, is that, while returnees seem positively related to local development through their human capital, there is no guarantee that they will be contributing to local development if the policy is not designed to extract necessary obligations. While return might be interpreted as success in some cases, migrants juxtapose economic and noneconomic factors in navigating return and re-emigration. As it already obtains, if migrants do not return some still remit which can also contribute to the development of Guyana. This happens if diaspora policy and thoughts of returning are engendered by the non-returning migrant. Transnational ties help to reinforce such thoughts. Notwithstanding, the transnational approach alone cannot explain the many contexts of migration and return. Such would require multiple contextual approaches. The relationships of the consequences of return migration for development in Guyana has been reflected in the extraction of 13 observable indicators. The variables give ideas into the relationship of return and development, that is to say the capabilities and achievements of returnees as compared to non-migrants. But return migrants' achievements, even when this is above that of non-migrants, does not guarantee inputs to wider local development in the presence of structural rigidities. In fact, during the period of exchange rate and foreign exchange restrictions, non-returning migrants could not remit formally, intending migrants could not get access to passports at will, inter alia. The result was a massive underground economy as a coping strategy under import substitution development. Notwithstanding, in the presence of liberal policies and transnationalism, at minimum, migration does do something positive for the migrants and/or the households from which they originate, even if the models used in this thesis exaggerate these outcomes.

This dissertation comprises three papers on the consequences of mandatory, financial disclosures. The first study focuses on a rule change which applies to investors who are required to disclose their ownership in firms. It investigates which investor types adjust their holdings in response to this rule change, the introduction of lower reporting thresholds. Results are consistent with a reshuffling of the ownership structure of firms. Precisely, they show that mutual funds and, to a lesser extent, banks decrease their holdings while non-financial corporations increase their holdings. The second study concentrates on the role of disclosures in portfolio decisions of one particular investor type, mutual funds. It analyzes whether comparability of firms’ accounting disclosures is associated with their membership in mutual funds’ portfolios. Results are in line with accounting comparability mattering for portfolio selection. Specifically, mutual funds are more likely to include a firm in their portfolio if the firm is more comparable, in accounting terms, to existing portfolio peers. The third study shifts the attention to accounting professionals who assist in the preparation of financial disclosures, auditors and consultants. It studies country-level as well as occupation-specific determinants of the decision to temporarily migrate within firms. Results suggest that differences in accounting and tax rules across countries can affect migration decisions of these professionals.

Mechanisms and their Consequences in a Changing World Alexandra Komissarova Abstract Many migratory species are responding to climate change by altering their migration behaviour, however, we know relatively little about the mechanisms by which such changes are accomplished. One way in which climate change could be influencing migration strategies is through its effect on habitat and territory quality. I tested several hypotheses of different mechanisms by which three aspects of territory quality could affect migration decisions in a partially migrant bird, the robin (Erithacus rubecula). I also used a theoretical individual-based modelling approach to investigate the interaction between migration and dispersal strategies within a population and examined its underlying mechanisms. Migration decisions were not significantly affected by summer territory quality, as measured by breeding success and summer vegetation structure. Winter territory quality was, however, found to be a good predictor of migration behaviour, with aspects of winter vegetation such as ground cover appearing particularly important. However, this effect of winter vegetation structure on migration decisions appeared to be largely due to its correlation with food availability. Migration decisions were strongly affected by winter food availability, with provisioning of food greatly increasing the numbers of resident individuals. The results of the theoretical model showed a that high rates of dispersal within a population reduced the average proportion of migrants, with the effect strongly influenced by dispersal cost and to a lesser extent, kin selection. I hope that this work will ultimately improve our ability to predict species’ responses to climate change by adding to our understanding of the mechanisms behind migration decisions, while also providing a more holistic view of migration by placing it in the context of other life history decisions.

Immigration into Europe has always been at the center of EU’s agenda. With the candidacy of Turkey for entry into the EU, the issue of immigration is being discussed with a new intensity. That is why this paper aims to understand the dynamics that will govern Turkish migration into EU after membership and to provide a sound basis for its complicated nature. In order to do that, different theories of migration have been categorized at different levels of approaches and analyzed to understand the reasons for migration. To ground these theories in the reality of migration, the statistics on countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007 have been used. After identifying the reasons why citizens of these new member states migrate, prospective Turkish migration has been analyzed accordingly. It has been found out that the reasons for Turkish migration will be mostly the same as those for new member states’ citizens. As a result of this, it has been concluded that the prospective Turkish migration will be extremely diverse and complicated and that the directions of migration will not only be from Turkey to Europe but also from Europe to Turkey.

This thesis investigates socio-economic drivers and impacts of internal migration in two countries, Brazil and Ghana. The first empirical chapter analyses the choice of Brazilian workers to move out of metropolitan cities. This direction of movement is substantial in the Brazilian context and leading against standard models of rural-to-urban migration. I estimate the role of living costs and local amenities in the determination of the destination choice of metropolitan out-migrants. Furthermore, I quantify the returns to migrating out of a metropolis by computing counterfactual wages applying matching techniques. The metropolitan out-migrants prefer to move to smaller towns where their real wage gain is positive. They minimize the physical and social costs of migration by moving to closer towns within their state of birth. Living costs in big cities appear to be a main driver for workers to leave these, especially if they are low-skilled. In the second empirical chapter, I investigate the effect of internal migration on homicide rates in Brazil in the period from 2005 to 2010. I construct a retrospective panel of migration rates between municipalities and use local labour demand shocks in the manufacturing sector at the origins of migrants as instrument for immigration rates. An increase in immigration rates of 1% translates in an increase of 1.2% in crime rates at the local level. The effect is predominant in municipalities with historically higher homicide rates and there is no effect in locations with a large informal sector. While internal migration puts pressure on destination labour markets, these results suggest that it is the presence of a criminal or lack of a flexible sector that channel this pressure into negative outcomes. The third empirical chapter explores dynamic patterns of internal migration from rural areas in Ghana. With a new household panel survey collected in 2013 and again in 2015, I document that many households have multiple migrants moving at different points in time and for various reasons. Conditional on having had a migrant in the past, I estimate the effect of having a new migrant on the asset welfare of origin households. The findings suggest that due to prior migration experience and consequently lower migration costs for new migrants, there is no decline in welfare from having a new migrant.

The focus of this study was to further the understanding of the importance of household characteristics in the tenure (buy or rent) decision-making process. The links between behavior and household factors for in-migrants were examined and a behavior model was developed to explain the housing choices of renters who had recently migrated. Apartment renters with five years or less residency in Tucson, Arizona were surveyed to determine what factors explain their tenure decisions. The study sought answers to the question of why so few new arrivals were buying homes when affordability was at the best level it had been in five years. The methodology of the study involved two surveys: a preliminary personal survey to screen for newcomers and an in-depth self-administered survey. The mail-back survey was effectively utilized to obtain data on the characteristics, perceptions, and homebuying intentions of renting newcomers. The results of the survey supported four main hypotheses: (1) The tenure decision is directly related to residential history in prior locations and in the current city. (2) Socio-demographic determinants impose significant effects on the tenure decisions of in-migrants. In addition to the oft-researched population variables, leisure factors were incorporated in this analysis of life cycle. (3) Place ties exert influence as pull factors in the tenure decision. Place ties to past residences and to potential future destinations inhibit home purchasing decisions, while place ties to the current city retard migration and facilitate homebuying. (4) The tenure decision is impacted and restricted by economic constraints. The economic constraints go beyond income to include down payments, pricing, financing, and previous home sales.

The aim of the thesis is to analyze the reasons and consequences of international labor migration of women workers into Turkey. With the process of new global restructuring, transformations in production structure and labor organization, and rise of informal economy widen the gap between different geographies and generate a tied demand and supply relation between female labor and service sector. Today millions of women who suffer from poverty leave their countries in order to sell their labor in another country. Turkey has been a popular destination for women from post-Soviet countries since the 1980s. Many of them enter Turkey legally in accordance with Turkish visa requirements but become illegal by overstaying and working in country. Service sectors absorb this female labor, and many of them are employed as live-in domestic workers. This study aims to investigate how macro factors of international migration like global restructuring and transformations in the informal economy affects meso and micro structures. In this context, this study focuses on the formation of intermediary agencies and particularly individual migratory experiences of post-Soviet women in Ankara.

Adult Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are targeted by the recreational, commercial, and First Nations fisheries during their spawning migrations through the Fraser River, British Columbia, Canada. Salmon can escape from each fishery or be released either voluntarily or due to mandate. Despite a high proportion of Pacific salmon released from each fishery, the primary (e.g., catecholamine, corticosteroid), secondary (e.g., metabolic, osmoregulatory, cellular), and tertiary (e.g., behavioural, survival outcomes) responses to fisheries-related stressors remain poorly understood. The overarching hypothesis of this thesis was that fisheries-related stressors displace fish from homeostasis, resulting in primary and secondary stress responses leading to tertiary outcomes, which in turn can be countered by facilitated recovery techniques. A range of fisheries-related stressors resulted in physiological disturbances reflected by primary, secondary, and tertiary stress responses. Telemetry studies revealed delayed mortality for sockeye salmon released following angling and beach seine capture. Survival was lower for sockeye salmon released from invasive gill and tangle net capture treatments relative to beach seine treatments, and this result was population-specific. Laboratory studies investigated the time required for primary and secondary stress indices to recover following fisheries-related stressors. Biologgers showed that heart rate recovery depended on the intensity and duration of the stressor, requiring several hours. A series of indicators of primary and secondary stress, including the expression of genes related to cellular stress and cell maintenance indicated that the stress response and recovery was sex- and species-specific. A three-pronged approach was used to investigate methods for accelerating recovery and promoting survival following capture stress by combining a laboratory-based physiology study, a field-based telemetry study, and a human dimensions survey. While facilitated recovery showed encouraging results and had general support from anglers, improved techniques are required before this approach could be implemented in freshwater release fisheries. Together, these results support my hypothesis and provide evidence for the context-specific nature of the response and recovery to fisheries-related stressors. This thesis highlights that even a brief fisheries-related stressor can have profound consequences on Pacific salmon, as reflected by the tertiary stress response, including mortality.

Neutrophils constitute the main immune defense against microbial invasion. When activated, they migrate towards the site of infection where they eliminate any foreign material in an effort to prevent wide-spread tissue damage and ultimately resolve infection. Previous work on neutrophil function in the elderly has highlighted a number of neutrophil effector functions, including phagocytosis, superoxide production and migration that exhibit decreased efficiency suggesting the potential for reduced pathogen clearance in older adults. This thesis reveals a migratory phenotype distinctive of neutrophils isolated from healthy elderly donors (> 60 years) and characterized by a maintained speed of migration (chemokinesis) but with significantly reduced directional migration (chemotaxis) and overall migratory accuracy in response to a range of chemoattractants. This migratory phenotype was shown to be associated with a constitutive basal activation of PI3Kinase in neutrophils isolated from older donors and appears to be a causative factor as treatment of neutrophils with inhibitors selective for PI3Kinase-γ and –δ, was able to restore migratory dynamics. The ‘old-migratory’ phenotype was amenable to correction by pre-incubation with 1nM Simvastatin in vitro and a two-week prescription of 80mg/day Simvastatin in vivo in healthy older adults. The ability of simvastatin to modulate migratory dynamics potentially provides a safe, cost effective intervention to reduce morbidity and mortality from infections in the elderly population.

Scientific knowledge on a population's religious composition is essential to understand the challenges faced by societies today. It arises in opposition to speculations about the actual size of religious groups that have been increasingly present in the public discourse in Europe for many years. This is particularly the case in Austria where the flows of refugees and migrants coming from the Middle East and Afghanistan have intensified since 2011 and culminated in 2015. These sparked a debate on the actual size of the Muslim population in Austria. This study fills the gap by presenting estimates of the religious composition for 2016 and projections until 2046 based on several scenarios related to the three major forces affecting the religious composition: migration (including asylum seekers), differential fertility and secularisation. The projections demonstrate that religious diversity is bound to increase, mostly through immigration and fertility. We further focus on the role and implications of international migration on the age and sex composition within the six religious groups: Roman Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, Muslims, other religions and unaffiliated. We find that the volume and composition of international migrants can maintain youthful age compositions in minority religions - Muslims and Orthodox. Sustained immigration leads to slower ageing but does not stop or reverse the process. The disparity between older majority and younger minority religious groups will further increase the cultural generation gap.

This thesis explores the mixed language and dialect setting of an international school in Spain across two age groups, young children and adolescents. It aims to investigate the impact of frequent and sustained interaction between Anglo and Non-Anglo informants, and if within such a turbulent, fluid and messy speech community, processes of dialect contact can be traced. Dialect contact research to date has usually focussed upon two distinct varieties coming together in a melting pot situation, with eventual stability. This speech community is fluid and turbulent. People are joining and leaving the community constantly. The study aims to reveal that despite previous research claims that the process of koinéisation takes two or three generations (see Kerswill and Williams 2000; Trudgill 1986; 2004), a speech community such as the one in the present study shows that processes of koinéisation can be demonstrated in a shorter time span. Through the analysis of the BATH vowel and the (t) variable across the two age groups and three broad ethnic groups, the study finds evidence of focussing over time in this highly diverse speech community. It also reveals that certain social factors which have been shown to influence new dialect formation in other studies, have an impact upon variation in this rather unique speech community.

Improving our understanding of the factors that shape the demography of populations now requires that we consider no event in isolation, and instead express current performance as a product of previous events and processes. Patterns of site choice and dispersal likely underpin a large proportion of the variation in reproductive success among individuals, but the consequences of dispersal decisions may only become apparent many months later at a separate stage of the annual cycle Only by studying the interactions among seasons can we determine how differences in annual routine translate into asymmetries in fitness, and subsequently apply this understanding to processes occurring at the population level. This thesis begins with a review of the phenomena known as carry-over effects (COEs; Chapter 2), where I find evidence to support their occurrence in a multitude of taxa and identify previously unconsidered drivers of carry-over effects that could potentially explain their widespread nature. The remainder of this thesis comprises empirical work using light-bellied Brent geese (Branta bernicla hrota) as a model system to study these processes. In Chapter 3 I show evidence of a COE in Brent geese mediated by body condition, but in addition demonstrate how the strength of this effect is moderated by downstream climatic conditions operating in a density-independent fashion. Chapter 4 describes the development of novel polymorphic microsatellite loci to be used in population genetic and parentage studies. In Chapter 5 I show that light-bellied Brent geese are highly site faithful and that this fidelity has a cultural basis. Finally in Chapter 6 I characterize patterns of mate choice, and investigate potential consequences of this pattern in light of the observed site fidelity, in terms of risk of inbreeding. Collectively my results demonstrate the utility of combining long-term datasets with genetic pedigrees to investigate patterns of dispersal in a migratory species. Moreover they highlight the necessity to study individual performance in the context of the entire annual cycle in order to fully characterize the nature and strength of fitness determinants operating at multiple stages in a migratory species.

An estimated one in five Hondurans live outside of Honduras, and 25% of the Honduran GDP is measured in remittances from migrants living abroad. This means that all Hondurans are implicated in international migration. Utilizing qualitative interviews with Honduran migrants and their families in the context of modern Honduran society, this thesis focuses on the ways in which international immigration structures impact the lives of Hondurans. Over the past two decades, the reasons and mechanisms of migration have changed dramatically and have become increasingly dangerous due to US and Mexican immigration policy. This thesis explores the experience of migrants and their families by focusing on deportees, migrants who are injured in the journey, and those who disappear en route. I conclude that structural violence intersects every aspect of Honduran migration, from the construction of push and pull factors motivating migration to the implications of natural, legal, and structural barriers.

Migration induced by the impacts of climate change is a complex phenomenon that consists of various concepts. It also consists of various perspectives about the cause and the effects of such migration. Regardless of these debates, however, some atoll island nations are under a threat of disappearance due the impacts of climate change, especially the rising sea levels. Migration remains the only option for these island nations. Consequently, there are numerous perspectives on how to address the arising problems due to such migration. By utilizing argumentative discourse analysis, this thesis identifies three dominant discourses that address these consequences of climate change induced migration and explores the island nation of Kiribati, although seemingly follows the lead of these dominant discourses, manages to shape and transform the discourses for the best interest of the Island Nation.

How does high-mobility migration affect politics in the migrants' countries of origin? This dissertation examines the socio-political effects of intra-EU migrations using quantitative and qualitative data from Romania and Poland, two of the European Union's main migrant-sending countries. The project makes a triple contribution. First, it analyzes on multiple levels the impact of free movement, producing a complete picture of systemic political transformation. It examines shifts in migrants' worldviews, political attitudes and attachments (micro-level ethnography); changes in the electoral appeal of political parties in regions with relatively higher citizen mobility (meso-level quantitative analysis of Polish voivodships and Romanian judete); and the strategies migrant-sending countries use to cope with the challenges of free movement. Second, unlike sociological, economic and ethnographic studies of recent migratory flows, which treat the phenomenon's political dimension as a side effect, this project anchors the research agenda in mainstream political science by placing the state-citizen relationship at the core of the inquiry as a conceptual benchmark for understanding migration-related political evolutions. Third, by focusing on EU-associated free movement, it sheds light on a special case of international mobility that departs from previous population movements associated with globalization. As the dimensions of citizenship (civil, political and social) become unbundled, economic rights and access to the European supranational market are the elements governments use to compensate citizens for the erosion of welfare state citizenship. I introduce the concept of citizenship of the market to reflect this development. By analyzing the recalibration of the state-citizen relationship in high-mobility contexts, the project provides answers to questions that scholarship of immigration, political transnationalism, and diaspora management fail to address. The findings show that EU-triggered change does not occur only top-down, via government reform and political elites, but also bottom-up, under the influence of societal actors and new political power groups.

This dissertation examines an instance of population movement from northeastern Arizona to the Safford and Aravaipa valleys of southeastern Arizona in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in order to understand the scale at which these migrations occurred, as well as the effect these migrations had on the expression of identity of both migrant and indigenous groups. Previous research indicated that at least one group of migrants from the Kayenta and Tusayan areas of northeastern Arizona arrived in the Safford Valley in the last decades of the thirteenth century. The research presented here found that several other parties of puebloan migrants arrived in both suprahousehold level and household level groups during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, first settling independently of local populations, and then intermingling with local populations at mixed settlements. Initially, as migrant and indigenous populations remained segregated from each other, their pre-migration identities were maintained, and each group remained distinct. However, as these populations began to live together at mixed settlements, they renegotiated their identities in order to deal with the day-to-day realities of living with groups of people with whom they had no previous experience. Through this process, migrant and indigenous groups formed a new identity that incorporated elements of the pre-migration identities of both groups. With these results, a model of the effects of migration on identity was created and refined to allow the social consequences of migration to be better understood.

Staff, previously employed by Public Technical and Vocation Education and Training (TVET) Colleges, migrated (transferred) to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in terms of Section 197 of the Labour Relations Act. This treatise investigates the legal consequences of the migration of the staff from the fifty (50) TVET Colleges to DHET and focuses on the different categories of staff. The conditions of service of all the categories of staff before migration are compared with that after the migration. Meaningful recommendations are made about negotiations that should take place in the respective bargaining chambers in order to ensure a smooth transition that will prevent unnecessary legal consequences in future. The treatise furthermore analyses the legal consequences of staff, employed by temporary employment services to perform outsourced functions at TVET Colleges, who did not migrate to DHET. The legal implications of these members of staff is debated and evaluated. The treatise also discusses the performance management system and the changes from the integrated quality management system of lecturers to the performance management development system of public servants. TVET Colleges absorb the employment costs (as a separate employer) to ensure that there is growth in the Full Time Equivalents of Ministerial programmes, funded by DHET. The treatise makes meaningful recommendations to the new employer (DHET) with regard to the appointment of staff to conduct ministerial programmes and the overtime remuneration of current staff that willingly agree to work overtime but are not fairly remunerated by DHET. The treatise also considers the second phase of the migration process, namely the development of a blueprint organogram and the development of job descriptions for the different functions identified on the organogram. The process should ideally be followed by a restructuring process where staff are placed in identified functions and must be capacitated to perform the functions adequately. This process will ensure alignment of functions in the fifty TVET Colleges. Finally, the treatise notes the issue of workplace discipline at the TVET College and the definition of the workplace. It offers a proposal to the DHET to negotiate with the unions about defining the workplace as this has a legal consequence for attaining the objective of sound labour relations. It make meaningful recommendations about the overlapping regulatory requirements applicable to the TVET College as a legal person and DHET as an employer.

Fear is a challenge for European democracies today that is discussed in the same breath as rising populism and anti-immigrant speech. However, it seems that fear has also become a defining principle for Western (post)modern society in many other areas of life. This observation has been framed by the term culture of fear and described by recognized sociologists like Ulrich Beck, Zygmunt Bauman and Frank Furedi. They argue that changing social conditions like individualisation and globalisation have altered Western society’s preoccupation with security, uncertainty and risk. In consequence, Bauman and Furedi talk about a fear that has become “free-floating” and “liquid”. This research project asks about the implications of such a culture of fear for society and takes a closer look at what has been described as politics of fear. By conducting a critical political discourse analysis of the political talk show hart aber fair, this paper aims at tracing politics of fear in the German discourse over migration during the “refugee crisis” (2015-2017). In a three-tiered approach, the investigation embarks by defining culture of fear and its social premises, followed by a discussion of politics of fear theories drawing upon such concepts as precaution, prevention and securitisation. Emerging from this discussion, both a “traditional” politics with fear and a (post)modern politics of uncertainty are identified. The subsequent analysis of a selected hart aber fair episode from the 5th September 2016 bases on Siegfried Jäger’s approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and examines the argumentation and interaction of the guests in the debate. The findings indicate that in addition to the use of fear as a political means for populist politicians, the narrative of the “fearful society” has on a whole permeated the German political discourse over migration. Hence, culture of fear offers a new perspective for the understanding of political discourse and the current developments in political practice.

The subject matter of this Bachelor´s thesis is the Eastern Baltic Sea cod. A literature review has been done regarding how environmental factors such as salinity, oxygen supply and temperature but also the size of the cod populations affects the migration patterns and the habitat choice of the cod. The result of the review shows that, when the eastern Baltic cod population is small, its area of distribution is restricted to the southern parts of the Baltic Sea. Moreover, high salinity leads to a larger area of distribution, while low oxygen content in the Deep Basins leads to vertical migrations, as well as further migrations south and north, to areas with better hydrological conditions. Finally the the cod tend to prefer habitats with warmer water, if the oxygen and salinity conditions are suitable, at least during the spawning period. This thesis also include estimation on how well the annual scientific trawl surveys performed by coastal Baltic countries, reflects the actual cod population size. This estimation is partly based on a critical review of available information about the trawl survey design in relation to cod migration patterns, distribution and habitat choice. Furthermore, a test has been done of how well the annual stock size estimates for the latest year, presented in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Annual Reports of the Baltic Fisheries Assessment Working Group (WGBFAS), between the years 1996-2009 reflected the best available stock size estimates from 2010. The results indicate that the scientific trawl surveys might not work satisfactory. This indicates that further research must be done in the field, therefore possible alternatives such as comparisons of positioning data of commercial and scientific trawls and interviews with fishermen are suggested.

The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system plays an important role in a number of disease states, such as cancer, and has also been implicated in wound and burn healing processes. Two IGF receptors, the type-1 IGF and type-2 IGF receptors, as well as six insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBP-1 to 6), have well established roles in mediating IGF activity. Earlier studies in this laboratory demonstrated that IGF-II binds to the extracellular matrix (ECM) protein vitronectin (VN), and although IGF-I does not bind directly to VN it can bind indirectly via specific IGFBPs. Therefore the aim of the research described in this thesis was to determine whether binary and ternary complexes of IGF-I/II, IGFBPs and VN affect human keratinocyte cell function. The strategy of pre-binding these complexes to the culture dishes was adopted in this study in an attempt to more accurately reflect the extracellular environment in vivo. These studies demonstrated that the binary complex of IGF-II and VN and the ternary complexes comprised of IGF-I, IGFBP-2, or 3, or 4, or 5 and VN significantly stimulated HaCaT de novo cell protein synthesis in the human keratinocyte cell line. Interestingly, these latter experiments demonstrated that although large increases in protein synthesis were observed using the ternary complexes, IGF-I/IGFBP complexes alone were responsible for the significant increases in protein synthesis and these responses are mediated via the MAPK signaling pathway. In addition, both the dimeric and trimeric complexes significantly enhanced cell migration through 12 μm TranswellsTM. Unlike the protein synthesis assays, VN was critically important in these migratory responses and highlighting the important role that integrins play in cell migration. Cell attachment assays on the other hand demonstrated that the interactions of IGFs with IGFBPs and VN did not affect cell attachment. The data encompassed within this thesis represent the first studies to provide a functional role for the interaction between IGFs, IGFBPs and VN in human keratinocytes. Taken together these results suggest that IGF/IGFBP/VN complexes may hold great potential in situations where enhanced keratinocyte cell migration and proliferation is required, such as in wound healing and skin engineering applications.

Based on the research questions employed in this study, the Nigerian immigrant community first began with student sojourners and is currently more effective within the African-American context. This community would perhaps have been much slower in evolving but for the crisis of institutional instability back in the Nigerian homeland as well as the policies of two American presidents. The major features of the Nigerian immigrant community with varying degrees of influences in America are: the Nigerian offspring, the Nigerian church, the Nigerian community media, the Nigeria women association, the Nigerian attorneys and physicians. The Nigerian offspring represent a conciliatory generation to Black America, the Nigerian homeland, Euro-America, and the most favorable orbit of incorporating Nigerian indices into the American mosaic. Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta exhibit one of the strongest evidences of the Southern typology of Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. Within this same setting, the generational and socio-cultural experiences of Nigerians and African-Americans are closely related. Both in their American agenda as well as aspirations toward the homelands, Nigerians are replaying the generational schemes of Black America. Analyses of the relationships between the generations of forced migration and voluntary migration in the Nigerian-U.S. based community media conform to a greater degree of understanding than misunderstanding. The benefits derived from the two historic migrations of black Africans to the U.S. are lopsided. Predisposed to neither assimilation nor integration, the Nigerian diaspora in particular exhibit a carefully selective pattern of socioeconomic identification which corresponds with segregated incorporation into society. Generally, the incorporation of the African diaspora in America favors a north to-east to-south thrust of the races of Africa. Africans from West and Central Africa, where a majority of the forced migrants were taken, are more likely to occupy an unfavorable orbit of American incorporation. Due mostly to American slavery, the Nigerian-African variable represents the most distinctive phase of reactive-global migration into the U.S. after decolonization. The predicted problem of "color line in the twentieth century" also corresponded with the reactive patterns of cross-cultural migrations particularly of the races of color and mostly at the intersection of the fifth wave of global migration. Sustained exchanges between Nigeria and the U.S. after colonialism therefore began with the fifth wave of reactive global migration. This marks an important new phase in the development and integration of Nigerian-African indices into the modern world.

In developing countries like Ethiopia rural-urban migration affects development in both urban and rural areas. As such, this study aims at establishing the major causes and consequences of the movement of people from rural to urban areas. To achieve the objective 500 migrant household heads were selected randomly from three kebeles of the town. Both primary and secondary data were employed and were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The study revealed that migrants came to Woldiya in search of employment and to utilize urban services and education. Hence, the out flow of economically active people from the rural agricultural sector has a negative effect on production in the areas of origin and the receiving area now experiences problems such as a shortage of housing, unemployment, increasing cost of living, lack of access to social services, Therefore, to mitigate the problem of rural-urban migration is launching of integrated rural development policy

Background: Economic integration activities in modern globalized world increasingly involve international movements of labor. Inthe case of the Ukraine, the country is one of the top ten donors of the labor force, where both, temporary and permanent migrant workers account for about 10% of the Ukraine’s total population. Considering that remittances received in Ukraine from its migrants workers are estimated to be about 4% of the Gross Domestic Product, there are grounds to claim that high flow of labor and workers remittance flows have been influencing the country's economic development in resent years. Purpose: The purposeof this paper is to analyze the impact of migration and remittances, and examine their consequences on the Ukraine's economy. Practical Approach: Different forms of secondary empirical material of both qualitative and quantitative character have been used. Furthermore, to complement the analysis, a survey among Ukrainian migrants working in Portugal has been conducted. Results: Ithas been determined that labor migration and remittances haveadual effect on the Ukraine'seconomy.First, remittances do have a strong short -term boost to domestic demand that positively affected GDP growth in recent years. Second, however, is that large financial inflows do not contribute to the business sector but instead generate dependence on remittances as they are a source of a supplemental income for many thousands of Ukrainian households; moreover, strong migration trends do not seem to generate more opportunities for those remaining in the Ukraine.

This study sought to examine the physiological correlates of migratory flight performance the North American migratory grasshopper Melanoplus sanguinipes Fabricius (Orthoptera: Acrididae) with a focus on mechanisms of resource allocation, the dynamics of hemolymph proteins, their interface with immune function, and the mechanism of flight-enhanced oogenesis. The performance of long duration flights has been shown previously to be of reproductive benefit to females who make them. Examination of possible mechanisms of resource compensation for the costs of flight showed no significant increase in either feeding, mating or digestion in females who performed long duration flight. A comparison of two populations of M. sanguinipes from Arizona and Colorado showed significant variation in body size, diapause regulation as well as internal and external morphology. The two populations did not differ in taxonomic characters or in short sequences of genomic and mitochondrial DNA. The follicle cell epithelium of ovaries from M. sanguinipes was examined for its relationship to juvenile hormone III (JH III). JH III induces patency in vitro in intercellular spaces of M. sanguinipes follicular epithelium as well as the characteristic apical endocytosis at the follicle cell oocyte interface. Exogenous JH III treatment of females on day 7 in lieu of flight reduced the threshold for induction of patency to 10-7 M JH III from 10-5 M JH III. These results indicate that JH III can act as a prime to the pump of oogenesis. An HPLC/LC-MS peptidomic survey of the hemolymph of M. sanguinipes following flight performance showed the presence of and changes in serine protease inhibitors. These peptides regulate numerous protease cascades involved in reproduction and immunity which suggested that flight might have a more broad impact than previously thought. Males who performed these flights showed a higher probability of surviving a bacterial challenge. The duration of flight performance was positively correlated in males with increases in titers of the hemolymph lipoproteins apolipophorin I and hexemerin. The exchangeable apolipophorin III showed no variation in correlation with flight. Females were not affected by flight performance in terms of hemolymph protein titers or the probability of surviving a bacterial challenge. These results suggest that the lipid transport system plays an important role in the immune response of this insect.

This thesis deals with the evaluation of the socio-economic consequences of the current migration wave in Europe based on the comparison of individual macroeconomic indicators in the member states of the European Union, which were most affected by migration, whether as transit or destination country. The monitored indicators are for example GDP growth, unemployment rate, growth of public expenditures and others. The first part of the thesis defines the theoretical foundations of migration based on sociological theories and defines the key concepts for the topic, such as economic migration, migrant, integration. The second, practical part of the thesis, focuses on monitoring the specific socioeconomic consequences of the migration crisis for selected countries and evaluates its pros and cons. It follows from this assessment that migration to Europe is an economically sustainable phenomenon. The work focuses more on the possibilities and positives or negatives of the integration of migrants into the labor market, also due to the potential threat of an aging Europe in the future. Using several foreign studies and models, it demonstrates the need to change the integration of migrants to benefit the European countries' pension system. It also pays attention to the social and political consequences of...
