Recent attention has been given to the construct of connectedness to nature and its role in fostering both pro-environmental behavior and well-being. Connectedness to nature shares conceptual similarities with social connectedness: both involve a cognitive schema of the self and other as overlapping, positive emotions towards the other and a commitment to protect the other. However, little research has systematically investigated the relationship between connectedness to nature and social connectedness. A series of eight studies were conceived with the following aims: 1) to clarify inconsistent correlations reported in the literature between connectedness to nature and social connectedness; 2) to test the potential of exposure to beautiful nature to reduce the effects of social exclusion; 3) to test the effects of social exclusion on connectedness to nature, intentions to engage pro-environmental behaviors and willingness to sacrifice for the environment and 4) to test the effects of moral elevation on connectedness to nature, intentions to engage in pro-environmental behaviors and willingness to sacrifice for the environment. Overall, although there was some mixed evidence, the studies within this thesis provide preliminary evidence for a positive causal effect of feelings of social connectedness on connectedness to nature: increasing or decreasing feelings of social connectedness appears to result in corresponding changes in people’s affective bond with nature, at least in the short term.

This thesis explores the nature of pedagogic connectedness and reveals the qualitatively different ways in which teachers in the middle years of schooling experience this phenomenon. The researcher defines pedagogic connectedness as the engagements between teacher and student that impact on student learning. The findings of this phenomenographic-related study are used to provide a framework for changes to pedagogic practices in the middle years of schooling. Twenty teachers of years 7, 8, and 9 boys in an independent college in South-East Queensland participated in this study. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with these teachers and the interview transcripts were analysed iteratively. Five qualitatively different ways of experiencing pedagogic connectedness emerged from this study. These categories of description are linked hierarchically and are delimited from each other through six common dimensions of variation. Teachers' conceptions of pedagogic connectedness range from information providing through instructing, facilitating, guided participation to mentoring. The five different conceptions may be classified broadly as teacher-centred, transitional or student-centred. In the information providing conception, pedagogic connectedness between teachers and students is limited with teachers perceiving themselves as subject experts and providing few opportunities for student-teacher engagements. The most complex conception, mentoring, is characterised by partnerships between teachers and students in which teachers view themselves as more experienced equals. These partnerships extend beyond the confines of the classroom and beyond the years of schooling. In this conception, teachers describe teaching as an emotional activity with teachers demonstrating passion for teaching and learning. The findings of this current study extend earlier understandings of teacher-student mentoring relationships in the middle years of schooling. These expanded understandings may contribute to enthusing middle years students and re-engaging them with schooling during these vital years.

Two related exploratory studies, one with families, and a second one with adult and child members of an independent school community, suggest that our connections with the rhythms, processes, species, and cycles of nature, our love and feelings of affinity for nature, can be strengthened by practicing contemplation outdoors. In The Family Nature Workshop Study, urban and suburban families participated in a seven-week Contemplation in Nature program, and in The Sit Spot Study, children and adult members from an urban school community practiced sitting quietly outdoors, recording observations in a journal twice a week for five weeks. Changes in connectedness were measured using the Inclusion of Nature in Self Scale (Schultz, 2001), the Ten-item Connectedness to Nature Scale (C. Frantz, email communication, January 11, 2012), the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure (Greco, Baer & Smith, 2011), and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (Brown & Ryan, 2003). Analysis of journal entries provided additional insight into the participants' experiences of self, experiences of the world outside of self, experiences of the self in relationship with other community members, and expressions of Biophilia Values (Kellert & Wilson, 1993). The journals reveal a picture of nature found in suburban and urban landscapes as it was perceived and experienced by the humans in the environment, people who were willing to take time out of busy schedules to pause, sit, listen, and learn. The journals thereby open a window through which we can view the everyday and extraordinary experiences of being a human in and as part of nature.

The aim of this thesis is to establish the principal properties for the theory of ordered compactifications relating to connectedness and to provide particular examples. The initial idea of this subject is based on the notion of the Stone-Cech compactification. The ordered Stone-Cech compactification oX of an ordered topological space X is constructed analogously to the Stone-Cech compactification X of a topological space X, and has similar properties. This technique requires a conceptual understanding of the Stone-Cech compactification and how its product applies to the construction of ordered topological spaces with continuous increasing functions. Chapter 1 introduces background information. Chapter 2 addresses connectedness and compactification. If (A;B) is a separation ofa topological space X, then (A 8 B) = A 8 B, but in the ordered setting, o(A 8 B)need not be oA 8 oB. We give an additional hypothesis on the separation (A;B) tomake o(A 8 B) = oA 8 oB. An open question in topology is when is X -X = X. Weanswer the analogous question for ordered compactifications of totally ordered spaces. So, we are concerned with the remainder, that is, the set of added points oX -X. Wedemonstrate the topological properties by using lters. Moreover, results of lattice theory turn out to be some of the basic tools in our original approach. In Chapter 3, specific examples and counterexamples are given to illustrate earlierresults.

This thesis is broadly concerned with two problems: obtaining the mathematical model of the specific infinite self-similar graph, and investigating the connectedness of the tree-like graph in order to show its relation to the associated hyperbolic space. Our main result concerning the former problem is that, in a variety of situations, the self-similar infinite structure obtained by using our method as the graph product of a disconnected finite graph and regular rooted tree can be connected (i.e. have the hyperbolic metric space associated to it). This addresses a question about the existence of the optimal depth for the breadth-first search algorithm and also has possible applications to the recent research topics in Psychological and Brain Sciences. We approach the connectedness problem by showing the similarity of obtained geometric structures to well known algebraic structures such as groupoid and pseudogroup. One of our main results is that, under the assumption that the emerged geometric self-similar structure is connected, it is naturally associated to the hyperbolic metric space. Thus, the variety of well known methods can be applied in further study. We also show that the connectedness of our structure can be reached in the finite number of steps or can not be reached at all. This gives the grounds for the optimal application of the breadth-first search algorithm.

Strategic decision making is fundamental since strategic decisions affect the long-term health of the organization. Strategy process research to date has been mainly concerned with characterising and explaining the nature of individual strategic decision making processes. A number of researchers are calling for more research on the potential connectedness between strategic decisions. In response, this thesis contributes to the strategic decision making literature by investigating the connectedness between strategic decision making processes. It focuses on precursive connections and tracks decisions backwards and forwards to identify potential connections. Both researchers and practitioners believe that the success and failure of prior decisions affect subsequent decisions. Hence, this research investigates decision performance as a potential influence on connectedness. The research is qualitative and a multiple embedded case study approach was chosen, examining decision making processes in two organizations in the UK. Data collection consisted mainly of in-depth interviews with executives and senior management but also included archival data. Main findings indicate that decision makers tend to transfer their knowledge and experience from one decision process to the next and thereby create a connection between strategic decisions. The connections can be characterised in terms of exploration and exploitation tendencies. Positive perceptions about a decision’s performance are related to the exploitation of existing practices, while negative perceptions prompt an exploration of new routines. The findings also show that informants’ perceptions about decision performance are highly subjective. The concept of cognitive decision styles provides plausible explanations arguing that individuals hold personal preferences when it comes to judging and perceiving information and their evaluations of strategic decisions cohere with these. Finally, this research suggests that decisions are linked primarily through individual agency. This reinforces the importance of the individual in strategic decision making processes, and consequently, the emphasis in this work is to argue that only by a deep understanding of individual action (and practice) is it possible to understand decision processes.

With a quarter of 16-24 year old Australians experiencing a mental health disorder and strong indicators that rates of these disorders are rising among young Australians, it is vital to address youth mental health and wellbeing. Family connectedness is known to be a key factor for youth wellbeing, but there is little detail about how young people experience it. Understanding the perspectives of young people is essential to help families connect and support the wellbeing of young people. This thesis aims to fill this gap in the understanding of family connectedness by qualitatively exploring young people’s experiences. The study adopts a childhood studies lens to capture the perspectives of young people, which differ from adult viewpoints, and brings a social work perspective to this area of research. Systems theory is used during analysis to ensure both the micro and macro elements of family connectedness are explored...

Of growing interest in the study of sexual minority experiences is the concept of community connectedness. Community connectedness reflects the cognitive and affective components of being affiliated with a particular community of similar others. Within the limited work that has been done, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community connectedness has typically been looked at as a predictor of positive outcomes, such as increased psychological well-being. However, there is limited evidence that LGBT community connectedness may be related to higher levels of substance use. This study aimed to explore the relationship that LGBT community connectedness has with alcohol use, taking into account a variety of potential confounding variables, including race, socioeconomic status, religiosity, and positive feelings towards one's sexual orientation. A total of 243 sexual minority participants (19.8% asexual, 29.2% bisexual, 22.2% gay/lesbian, 16.0% pansexual, and 12.8% other) were gathered through the use of targeted online social media advertising. A directed acyclic graph (DAG) was created to identify implications regarding variable covariance. Following the creation of the DAG, the implications were tested using bivariate correlations and the DAG was adjusted based on significant statistical relationships between variables. After the testing of the implications, we tested the hypothesis that LGBT community connectedness would predict alcohol use by regressing alcohol use on community connectedness controlling for the confounding variables identified using the DAG (age, LGB positive identity, race, religiosity, SES, and sexual orientation). The variables accounted for 11.37% variance in alcohol use, and higher community connectedness predicted more alcohol use (b=0.81, SEB=0.33, p=0.01). While connection to the LGBT community is typically explored as a positive form of social support, the current work found positive relationship between community connectedness and alcohol use for sexual minorities. The relationship between LGBT community connectedness and alcohol use should be explored in more depth to understand the pathways between a sense of connection and alcohol use. The work may indicate the need for non-alcohol based LGBT spaces to be more prevalent, so that community connection is not reliant on the use of alcohol-based spaces such as gay bars.

Connectedness is an important topological property and has been widely studied in digital topology. However, three main challenges exist in applying connectedness to solve real world problems: (1) the definitions of connectedness based on the classic and fuzzy logic cannot model the “hidden factors” that could influence our decision-making; (2) these definitions are too general to be applied to solve complex problem; and (4) many measurements of connectedness are heavily dependent on the shape (spatial distribution of vertices) of the graph and violate the intuitive idea of connectedness. This research focused on solving these challenges by redesigning the connectedness theory, developing fast algorithms for connectedness computation, and applying the newly proposed theory and algorithms to solve challenges in real problems. The newly proposed Neutro-Connectedness (NC) generalizes the conventional definitions of connectedness and can model uncertainty and describe the part and the whole relationship. By applying the dynamic programming strategy, a fast algorithm was proposed to calculate NC for general dataset. It is not just calculating NC map, and the output NC forest can discover a dataset’s topological structure regarding connectedness. In the first application, interactive image segmentation, two approaches were proposed to solve the two most difficult challenges: user interaction-dependence and intense interaction. The first approach, named NC-Cut, models global topologic property among image regions and reduces the dependence of segmentation performance on the appearance models generated by user interactions. It is less sensitive to the initial region of interest (ROI) than four state-of-the-art ROI-based methods. The second approach, named EISeg, provides user with visual clues to guide the interacting process based on NC. It reduces user interaction greatly by guiding user to where interacting can produce the best segmentation results. In the second application, NC was utilized to solve the challenge of weak boundary problem in breast ultrasound image segmentation. The approach can model the indeterminacy resulted from weak boundaries better than fuzzy connectedness, and achieved more accurate and robust result on our dataset with 131 breast tumor cases.

International education has been one of the major non-resource exports, and the largest service export, for economic growth in Australia over the past 20 years. With the majority of international students studying in Australian universities, little attention has been paid to the experiences of international students in Australian high schools, and even less research has focused on their lived experiences and their sense of belonging and wellbeing. To bridge this gap, this research aimed to investigate the unique needs and experiences of this under researched student population as part of a larger Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project. The study was conducted using an online survey, with 225 international students in Australian independent private and public high schools Years 10-12 (93 males, 129 females, 3 other gender identities) who completed quantitative and qualitative components of the survey. The results were supplemented with interview data from the wider project (7 transcripts). Students’ sense of belonging to their home country, to Australia, the quality of their face-to-face and online friendships, and their sense of connectedness to their host school were entered as predictors to explain students’ social wellbeing. Each explained variance in social wellbeing, with school connectedness and sense of belonging in Australia the strongest predictors. The qualitative findings demonstrated that international students had a strong desire, but also barriers, to forming friendships with domestic students and a greater need for social support and assistance. International students recommended more shared activities and cultural sharing events to help bridge the language and cultural barriers, as well as the sense of otherness that prevents the formation of such friendships. Together, the quantitative and qualitative findings suggest that international students’ social wellbeing can be promoted through inclusive and proactive strategies for engaging international students with their school community, with teachers and students, as well as the broader Australian community. Further, analysis of the time that students were in Australia suggested that there were key periods (after 2 months but before 5 years) where belonging and connectedness were reduced. This suggests that orientation activities are not sufficient and ongoing opportunities should be provided to share their own, and be a part of Australian, culture. In addition, the results revealed no statistically significant differences in the way students connected to others (either face-to-face or online). Students also reported that, despite some negative online experiences, online connection brought about more benefits than harms. When considering gender differences, females reported greater use of social media, email and online phone calls, as well as stronger online friendships than males, while males reported significantly more negative experiences online. While not all students experience negative online encounters, the significance of these encounters (e.g., racism, sexism, harassment, and other acts of cyberbullying) suggest that even rare experiences should be considered seriously. International students are exposed to negative experiences that relate to their race or language barriers, which may hamper their social wellbeing through heightened fear, self-doubt, or reluctance to engage. As such, cybersafety and diversity and inclusion actions can be implemented at school and policy levels to protect students from diverse backgrounds whether they are engaging online or in-person. The thematic analysis produced six key themes regarding ways in which international students’ lives could be made happier. These were through greater 1) friendships and support, 2) support and recognition of academic pressures, and 3) acceptance of diversity in culture and language, 4) autonomy and control over their lives in homestays, school, and personal expression, and through mitigating the negative impacts of 5) racism and negative ethnic stereotypes, and 6) the stressor of students’ moral responsibilities and obligation, especially towards family and academic achievement. It must be noted that the study was designed to promote the individual voices of students, and as such may not be representative of all international students. The responses demonstrated a great deal of diversity of experience, as well as diversity of backgrounds. Despite this, the current findings do provide a deeper understanding around the experience of international secondary school students in Australia. Schools, policy makers, and the wider Australian community can use the current findings to assist international students in their quest to belong, form meaningful relationships, and complete their education with the best possible academic and emotional outcomes.

If X is a reducible unimodular Pisot substitution, the Rauzy fractal associated to X can be studied using the strand space. In this dissertation we are going to provide a characterization of the connectedness of the Rauzy Fractal in terms of infinitely many graphs closely related to the proximal structure of the strands in the strand space. Using this characterization, we show a topological characterization of invertible substitutions on two letters, and show that the Rauzy fractal associated to an Arnoux-Rauzy substitution is connected. We show that if two reducible unimodular Pisot substitutions X and Y are homemorphic, then there is a subdivision of the Rauzy fractal for X into finitely many pieces, which, after applying suitable linear transformations and a translations to each piece, becomes a set whose union is the Rauzy fractal for Y. We also found an algorithm to find asymptotic composants.

The potential for green interventions to promote mental wellbeing and reduce mental distress is increasingly being recognised (Mind, 2007). Preliminary evidence suggests that allotment gardening activities may have a significant effect on mental wellbeing, but a paucity of research, particularly in non-clinical populations, has been highlighted (Partridge, 2010). A cross-sectional online survey of 171 allotment gardeners was conducted. Measures of subjective wellbeing (quality of life), eudaimonic wellbeing, connectedness to nature and preference for solitude were administered. Qualitative data were also collected through open-ended questions. Allotment gardeners’ scores on measures of environmental quality of life and eudaimonic wellbeing were significantly higher than those reported in the literature, but social quality of life was lower in allotment gardeners. Regression analysis showed that time spent on the allotment during summer predicted eudaimonic wellbeing. This relationship was fully mediated by feelings of connectedness to nature. A relationship was observed between spending time on the allotment and preference for solitude. Four main themes emerged from the qualitative data: allotments provided a space of one’s own, meaningful activity, increased feelings of connectedness, and improved physical and mental health. The results suggest that allotment gardening is associated with increased eudaimonic wellbeing, but not subjective wellbeing (also referred to as hedonic wellbeing). Furthermore, a mechanism through which allotment gardening enhances wellbeing is suggested: increased connectedness to nature. Limitations of the current study and clinical and research implications are discussed.

The current study examined the effects of gender, ethnicity, number of years enrolled in a current university, number of years in graduate school, number of years enrolled in a current graduate program, Conscientious Perfectionism, Self-Evaluative Perfectionism, and satisfaction with life on campus connectedness among a sample of 345 graduate students. The number of years enrolled in a current university, Self-Evaluative Perfectionism, and satisfaction with life were all significant predictors of campus connectedness. Interaction effects indicated that students with high satisfaction with life scores but low Self-Evaluative Perfectionism scores were more likely to experience greater campus connectedness and White students were more likely to experience greater campus connectedness when satisfaction with life scores were high. No significant differences in campus connectedness were found among Non-White students. Limitations, future directions, and implications for both counseling and graduate programs are discussed.

The aim of this thesis was to examine aspects of conceptual and non-inferential role-taking that are intact or limited in individuals with autism. More specifically, this thesis examined the ability to adopt different psychological perspectives, based on the hypothesis that basic non-inferential role-taking processes, related to the way we identify with the attitudes and feelings of other people, are relatively lacking in individuals with autism. Such processes might be important for the understanding of different perspectives in other people. The series of studies presented in this thesis investigated role-taking in individuals with autism, relative to chronological and verbal mental age matched groups of participants without autism. The studies focused on three main areas of research: narrative role-taking, deictic understanding, and interpersonal non-verbal communication. In the first study, participants were asked to tell stories from the point of view of different characters. In the second study, a set of tasks examined production and comprehension of verbal and non-verbal deictic expressions. The third study examined the processes of interpersonal engagement and role-taking, by focusing on the nonverbal communication exchanged between two people in the context of a one-to-one interaction. The results from the studies provide evidence suggesting that individuals with autism show aspects of role-taking ability that are both limited and intact, which may be better explained by an impairment in interpersonal, and non-inferential role-taking, than by cognitive, and conceptual, limitations.

Connections within communities have been recognized as a protective factor in the experience of collective trauma, yet many interventions have not accounted for the potential disruptions to connections within communities. The purpose of this dissertation project is to broaden the knowledge of ways to generate community connectedness through culturally appropriate and systemic interventions directed at social networks and communities, and the methodologies to implement them. One of the most notable findings following terrorism and immense psychosocial trauma is that family, community, and social network supports are the most significant factors in promoting recovery and preventing long-term mental health difficulties. This project utilized a content analysis of theoretical foundations and professional counselor competencies, which provided empirical evidence as to how community connectedness emerges following a collective trauma event. Given the significance for building community connectedness into collective trauma responses (Breckenridge & James, 2012; Charuvastra & Cloitre, 2008; Flynn, 2007; Hobfoll et al., 2007; Landau, 2012; Mears, 2008; Saul, 2014; Saul & Bava, 2009; Shultz, Cattaneo, Sabina, Brunner, Jackson, & Serrata, 2016), and the call for more leadership from counselors by CACREP (2016) in the area of disasters and crises, this project provides an instructional manual for mental health professionals who are called upon after a collective trauma. This instructional manual offers interventions and models to facilitate long-term post disaster recovery after a collective trauma.

Students who obtain college degrees have a higher earning potential and greater likelihood of employment. Although researchers have found that student enrollment and performance in online college courses has increased, attrition has also risen at a higher rate than in face-to-face courses. The problem of declining persistence in online courses at a rural community college in the Southeastern United States was addressed in this study. The community of inquiry framework was used in this qualitative case study to explore perceptions of 10 experienced online learners. The research questions were focused on students' perceptions of the roles of connectedness and student engagement as well as the techniques and strategies used to maintain connectedness. Data were collected through semistructured online audio interviews that were recorded, transcribed, open coded, and analyzed thematically. Findings indicated that students perceived the presence of engaging materials, elevated instructor presence, established social presence, and confirmed learning as promoters of cognitive presence and students' online course persistence. The resulting project consisted of a hybrid workshop series designed to enhance instructors' pedagogical practices to promote engagement and persistence in online courses. The workshop evaluation provided both formative and summative feedback from the workshop participants. The project contributes to social change through the ability of educators and program developers of online courses to garner new knowledge, as well as contributions to the continued viability of the focus institution and long-term economic stability for students.

At a time when university student diversity is heightened and when national government regulations have shifted their quality focus from support improvements to student achievement, little is known about the mechanism of the latter. University efforts to support quality, caring interactions between students and staff, known as connectedness, are currently favoured, and this thesis examines connectedness, mood, emotional well-being and academic behaviours of commencing students at a regional Australian university. This is done through the lens of a first semester intervention, known as Tertiary Learning Communities (TLC). Drawing on existing connectedness research, across both school and university settings and guided by a whole-school framework, details of the establishment of a suitable working party, the development of survey, pilot and intervention activities, and monitoring the ability of a cross-campus intervention to influence student connectedness and behaviour markers, are highlighted to advance further understanding of the mechanics of connectedness in a university setting. The developed survey, which collected data from undergraduate students early in their first semester, effectively captured perceptions of connectedness across a broad range of sources in addition to their mood, emotional well-being and academic student behaviours. Paired sample-tests assessed connectedness changes, and chi square analysis assessed behaviour changes when comparing the experimental and control groups on two occasions. A single intervention aligned to a first year core unit to support academic and social interactions, was shown to be ineffective in enhancing student connectedness during the semester of the intervention or the semester following the intervention. However, the level of connectedness decreases measured across ‘personal’, ‘other students’ and ‘lecturers’ were indeed significant, as was the finding that connectedness decreases for intervention participants exceeded the decreases of the control group. Furthermore, mood and emotional well-being challenges and the slow emergence of academic behaviours were also revealed. These findings provided support for future inclusive student support initiatives, maintained the involvement of working party members and extended support beyond the first semester to across first year.

This dissertation consists of three parts. The aim of this study is to quantify dynamically the market connectedness by using return and volatility spillovers. First part is a methodological study to investigate the market connectedness and explanation of an extended methodology. Return and volatility series is taken into account to compare the different interpretations of market connectedness. The study uses the spillover methodology developed by Diebold and Yilmaz (2009) and the extended version with the focus of flow of information developed by Schmidbauer et.al. (2013). The contribution in this case is to discuss how to provide a volatility input series to be used in the explained methodologies. We compare the results of the methodologies using return series and volatility series. A network perspective is used to compute the return and volatility spillovers. Since, quantifying the connectedness is important to evaluate the policy responses and allow an option to policy makers to understand the economy, the last two parts of the study include empirical innovations to discuss the network importance of two countries. In the second part we apply the methodology to Turkish stock market to understand its dynamics since 2000. We construct a network consists of six stock markets and investigate the Turkish economic history by quantifying the market connectedness in the network. We focus on the changes in the market connectedness with a view towards political and economic events. The third one is an examination of Russian stock market during the Ukrainian crisis. We link the shock spillover characteristics of the Russian stock market with different round of sanctions imposed to Russia. We see that distinct spillover patterns exist in different round of sanctions and this help to policy makers to understand the changes in the economy and develop an attitude towards this changes.

My aim, in this thesis, is to criticise what I see to be a theme in contemporary cosmopolitanism, and suggest a new direction for such theorizing to follow. That theme is the placement of empirical considerations at the very centre of cosmopolitan theorizing. It seems at times that many cosmopolitans look around them, see something they find deeply unsettling (i.e. global poverty and/or inequality), and this moves them to theorize cosmopolitan obligations into being. I will argue against this kind of approach. I believe this ‘pragmatic turn’ to be damaging to cosmopolitanism. The starting point of these cosmopolitanisms seems to affect those theories, and makes suspect the implied obligations. It would be better if premises and presuppositions that were neutral with respect to these cosmopolitan obligations could imply such obligations. Furthermore, I will argue that a modestly metaphysical Kantianism can give us such neutral starting points. My interpretation of Kant centres on his ideas concerning moral agency, and will be metaphysical: the relevant ideas may be said of all relevant agents at all times, cannot be experienced through empirical investigation, and cannot be proved by theoretical deduction. Nevertheless, I will argue that my Kantian interpretation gives forth a modest metaphysics, insofar as the warrant we have to assert metaphysical claims is not given to us by speculative or theoretical reason, but rather by our practical reason. In particular, I will argue that, from a cosmopolitan perspective, a metaphysical, but also modest, interpretation of imperfection and freedom may be very useful

Having a chronic illness may feel alienating, yet examination of the literature shows limited research on social connectedness and health. In order to contribute to the understanding of this impact of illness, I examined perceived levels of social connectedness in persons with chronic diseases (CD), functional somatic syndromes (FSS) and medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). A major focus of this study was to investigate the association of social connectedness with depression, anxiety, and general health in patients with ongoing symptoms of illness. Data collection was obtained through the use of four online surveys collectively known as VOICE (Verification of Coping, Illness and Experience). For the purposes of this study, five measures were used: the Social Connectedness Scale, Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Patient Health Questionnaire depression scale (PHQ-8), Hopkins Symptoms Checklist (HSCL) and the Social Impact Scale. Participants were recruited through announcements via online message boards and support groups, as well as through the distribution of brochures in local medical practices. A total of 148 participants (80% female) completed all four surveys. Results indicated that the chronic illness groups did not significantly differ in social connectedness, although there was some indication that the FSS group felt more social isolation. Regression analyses indicated that, while accounting for socio-cultural and health factors, social connectedness was the strongest predictor of depression (β = - .43, p < .001), anxiety (β = -.48, p < .001) and general health (β = .34, p < .001) in chronically ill persons. The independent and robust relationship of social connectedness with psychological and physical health in individuals with chronic illness suggests that this is an important factor deserving of future research with important clinical applications.

To meet the purpose of the study, three hypotheses were tested: First, it was predicted there was a relationship between spousal connectedness and personal and spousal ICT (information and communication technology) device usage; second, it was predicted satisfaction with personal or spousal ICT device usage were mediators of the primary relationship between spousal connectedness and ICT device usage; and third, it was expected communication moderated the relationship between spousal connectedness and personal ICT device usage. A representative sample of married adults (n=208) were sampled. Personal and spousal ICT device use, satisfaction with personal and spousal ICT device use, spousal connectedness, and communication were measured and the resulting data analyzed. Regression analyses and path analyses were performed to test the hypotheses. The first and third hypotheses were found to be significant, but the second was not. The negative relationship between personal ICT device use and spousal connectedness indicates that as ICT device use increases, connectedness decreases. Communication, however, was shown to buffer this relationship. Data indicated that the more a person recalled communicating with their spouse, the less prominent was the relationship between their personal ICT device use and spousal connectedness.

The main objective of the thesis is the construction of a systemic risk indicator based on the dispersion of the risk measures of the individual institutions of the system. The thesis presents a brief introduction to the literature on systemic risk measures, focusing on the Marginal Expected Shortfall (MES) and the delta CoVaR, which consider not only the yield of an individual firm, but also the effect of its performance on the whole system, and on the connectedness measure between the financial institutions, which measures the relationship between the institutions. We apply the systemic risk and the connectedness measures to the daily returns of the European financial institutions from the 1St January 1985 to 12th May 2014. Finally, to aggregate the risk measures and build a systemic risk indicator, we estimate the measure entropy and find that the indicator has good forecasting abilities for the financial crisis.

In this thesis we propose to discuss and analyse the correlation between the spot rates of bonds of ten European countries (Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Austria) for three different maturities (two, five and ten years). In order to achieve this we use the variance decomposition method already used in the works of Diebold and Yilmaz in the Journal of econometrics of 2014. The analysis consists o f two parts: a first, static, analysis that takes into account the entirety of the data set (monthly returns from 2000 to 2021) and a second, dynamic, analysis that takes into account a rolling window subset of the data. The goal of the thesis is to show which countries have a greater influence over the others within the sample and to study how the correlation changes over time through periods of stability and crises and what is the impact of the ECB policies on correlation.

Ample evidence underscores the deleterious effects of loneliness on health and mortality. Therefore, it is important that loneliness risks are identified across all ages and appropriate measures are devised to address those risks. Although almost a third of the US older adult population lives alone, there is limited research on the social connectedness (or its lack thereof) in this subset of older adults. This dissertation specifically focused on understanding loneliness (its extent, variance, and sources of variance) in older adults who live alone and do not use the Internet. The results indicate that the loneliness reported in this subset of older adults is greater than that found in general older adult samples. Social isolation (measured by social network variables) and emotional well-being emerged as significant predictors of loneliness in this group. Demographics, personality, and technology experience did not predict variance in loneliness beyond that predicted by social isolation and emotional well-being. To understand if Internet adoption can provide greater opportunities for connectedness, a qualitative study was also conducted. This study focused on the subjective experiences of living alone, relationships with friends, family, and groups in the context of living alone, and the role of technology in supporting connectedness needs. Loneliness was the most commonly reported challenge associated with living alone and was often described in terms of lack of companionship or someone to share one’s feelings with. The older adult Internet users perceived usefulness of Internet-based social media as a compensatory tool for communication, but valued in-person interactions more. Together these studies provided insights into the social connectedness of older adults who live alone. The findings advanced the understanding of the complexities of living alone in older age and helped identify directions to best address social connectedness needs while also supporting older adults’ desire to continue to age in the living arrangement of their choice. Finally, the gaps in research on older adults’ use of social media and its potential to support connectedness for an aging population were also addressed.

This thesis is a theoretical and practical intervention in the field of art and technology. It proceeds from the re-examination of four specific domains that in the past 40 years have considerably informed the invention of new aesthetic forms. They are: art, science, nature and technology. We have identified that each one of these domains and the way they inform one another reflects the influence of a Western analytical tradition based on fragmentation, dichotomies and dualities. In consequence of this, art of the last decades has suffered from a sort of mechanistic thought which results from a predominantly weary aesthetic model, founded in dualities such as: object/process, form/behaviour, meaning/information. The main question that the present study addresses is how to overcome this predominantly reductionist inheritance and to develop an aesthetic model able to interconnect in an integrative fashion those disparate domains, respective discourses and practices? The answer to this question, developed throughout this thesis, is an aesthetic principle built upon the notions of resonance, coherence and field models, rooted in an integrative view of living organisms based on the theory of biophotons. This constitutes the main contribution of the thesis to new knowledge. The theoretical approach of this thesis is developed upon the revision of the concept of form, supported by a Gestalt analysis as provided by Rudolf Arnheim, and has involved the consideration of the ideas of Gilbert Simondon (the concept of "concretisation") and Vilem Flusser (the concept of "apparatus"), in order to gain a deeper insight into the nature of technology. In conclusion, the practice-based methodology of this thesis has been to develop artworks based on the confluence of living organisms (plants) and artificial systems in order to permit empirical observation and reflection on the proposed theory. The major outcome of the practice is the artwork "Breathing", a hybrid creature made of a living organism (a plant) and an artificial system. The creature responds to its environment through movement, light and the noise of its mechanical parts and interacts with the observer through his/her act of breathing. This work is the result of an investigation into plants as sensitive agents for the creation of art. The intention was to explore new forms of artistic experience through the dialogue of natural and artificial processes.

The reliability of genetic evaluations across separate management units (e.g. flocks) depends on the extent of genetic links or connections among animals in these units. Where poor connectedness exists, comparisons of estimated breeding values (EBV) across units may be biased. The objectives of this study were to identify breeding strategies to increase connectedness among units, to evaluate statistics that may reflect the reduction in bias as connectedness increases in such strategies, and to assess levels of connectedness in Suffolk and Targhee flocks participating in the National Sheep Improvement Program. Expectations of bias when production units have different genetic means were derived for a simple sire model. These expectations were applied to data involving two flocks of animals with three different types of connections: sharing of a common reference sire or use of either a full- or half-sibling sire in each flock. Bias decreased as numbers of progeny in each flock increased for all methods. Linking through a reference sire was most effective and was the only method that eliminated bias as progeny numbers became infinite. Pedigree and performance data on a single trait with heritability 0.25 were then simulated for 15 flocks with 40 to 140 ewes per flock. Each flock was simulated with a different founder genetic mean to introduce bias into the genetic evaluation. Flocks participated in sire referencing schemes by artificial insemination, with varying levels of participation, or by natural service. With sire referencing genetic gain was higher and inbreeding was lower than without, and bias was rapidly reduced to near-zero levels. Discontinuing the schemes led to lower genetic gain, but bias was not reintroduced. The prediction error correlation of flock genetic means was proposed as a connectedness measure because it was strongly associated with bias. Benchmarks of 0.05 and 0.10 for "good" and "superior" connectedness were established. Targhee flocks have increased connectedness across the breed by actively exchanging rams over 15 yr. In the Suffolk breed, connectedness has only improved within segregated clusters of flocks. Suffolk breeders need to engage in active ram exchange to decrease risk of biased across-flock EBV comparisons.

The Depressive Experiences Questionnaire Dependency scale has been used extensively by researchers to measure a personality style vulnerable to depression. However, subsequent studies have demonstrated that the DEQ-Dependency is composed of two distinct forms of dependency, "Connectedness" and "Neediness", which may have different implications for mental health. While Connectedness may represent a more mature form of dependency than Neediness, it may not represent an entirely "healthy" form of relatedness as previously suggested. Although these scales are being used in current research, it is not yet clear what they represent. One goal of the present study was to further examine the construct validity of Connectedness and Neediness in order to differentiate these constructs. Gender, self-efficacy, relationship quality, and interpersonal behavior were chosen because of their proposed significance in differentiating forms of dependency. 265 undergraduates completed the DEQ, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Mutual Psychological Development Questionnaire (MPDQ), and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP). Overall, results supported the importance of distinguishing between these two factors of dependency. Neediness was associated with more maladaptive correlates for both genders. The picture is more complex for Connectedness, however, and it appears that Connectedness is less healthy for women than for men.
