This chapter develops a critique of representationalist accounts of action. It shows that on any standard definition of representation, concepts such as minimal or action-oriented representations (AORs) are not really representational in any meaningful sense. It’s difficult to maintain, for example, that motor-control processes characterized in terms of AORs are decouplable from the specific action situation, or how they meet other constraints that define a process as representational. I argue that AORs no longer conform to the criteria that would make them representational, and that, at least in the case of action, representations are not required. Accordingly, it’s not clear that the notion of representation is scientifically useful in explanations of action.

This chapter examines minstrel performance as the first construction of an absent black presence in American popular music, signified by the minstrel mask, and as the first sustained project involving the fetishization and commodification of black male subjectivity. Minstrelsy practice required a body at the level of performance, but not a black one; rather, it called for the representation of blackness constructed in the white American racial imagination of the time. After the Civil War, black male performers who began to access the entertainment industry in minstrel troupes, and they did so in large numbers, were required to do so in blackface since the black mask conformed to deeply embedded social stereotypes of black masculine subjectivity.

El presente informe recoge los resultados obtenidos en el marco del proyecto de investigación titulado Transferencia tecnológica para la optimización operacional de la agrocadena del aguacate en el Tolima como apoyo a su internacionalización, desarrollado en el marco del Convenio 046-2019 celebrado entre la Universidad de Ibagué y la Universidad del Tolima, como parte del macroproyecto Ocho cadenas productivas para el desarrollo competitivo del Tolima, Convenio 2077-2017, que opera la Universidad del Tolima con financiación del Sistema General de Regalías (sgr) a cargo de la Gobernación del Tolima. Este proyecto, de aquí en adelante denominado Proyecto 8cpaguacate, se formuló para facilitar la transferencia, adopción e integración de modernas tecnologías de información y de conocimiento, al interior de 60 unidades productivas representativas de las doce asociaciones que conforman la Federación de aguacateros del Tolima (Paltolima).

This book examines the role played by American network television in reconfiguring a new “common sense” about race relations during the civil rights revolution. Drawing on stories told both by television news coverage and prime time entertainment, it explores the relationship among the civil rights movement, television, audiences, and partisans on either side of the black empowerment struggle. In particular, it considers the recurring theme that America's racial story was one of color-blind equality grounded on a vision of “black and white together.” The book concludes that television had an ambivalent place in the civil rights revolution. More specifically, it argues that network television sought to represent a rapidly shifting consensus on what “blackness” and “whiteness” meant and how they now fit together. Network television premised equality on a largely white definition whereby African Americans were ready for equal time to the extent that their representations conformed to whitened standards of middle-class and professional respectability.

This chapter studies noir's twin genre, the woman's film. While this genre's formal politics are quite similar to noir's, its focus on female identity entails a representation of female desire. The woman's film is the site of contradictory and antithetical functions: its narrative is structured by twisted plots and tortuous trajectories that often split into two opposite scenarios or styles—one representing the public/male/urban space and the other the private/female/domestic space. The genre's formal convolutions correspond with the contradictory discourse on postwar femininity, namely the opposition between the need to conform to normative femininity and the relentless effort by women to find new ways of being and new forms of desire. While the genre's proximity to noir's modern concerns cannot be underestimated, its gender interests lead to an excessive focus on the female body.

This chapter reconstructs the background knowledge that underpins all processes of conflict resolution in rural Bangladesh. It starts with the in-depth analysis of an attempted murder case and shows how state and non-state courts are intricately intertwined in what is conceptualized as the logic of non-enforcement. According to this logic, people frequently file cases with the state court, but not to get binding and enforceable verdicts. Instead, they do so to alter the dynamics of non-state courts. Although non-state justice institutions respond to representations of the state (for example in the form of official documents), they nonetheless do not conform to state law. Instead, their decisions are informed by specific normative convictions about the importance of social harmony and religious prescripts. Importantly, this logic of non-enforcement also applies to the state’s Muslim family laws, which are frequently not enforced if they threaten the patriarchal order of things in rural Bangladesh.

Grace and Freedom addresses the issue of divine grace in relation to the freedom of the will in Reformed or “Calvinist” theology in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century with a focus on the work of the English Reformed theologian William Perkins, and his role as an apologist of the Church of England, defending its theology against Roman Catholic polemic, and specifically against the charge that Reformed theology denies human free choice. Perkins and his contemporaries affirmed that salvation occurs by grace alone and that God is the ultimate cause of all things, but they also insisted on the freedom of the human will and specifically the freedom of choice in a way that does not conform to modern notions of libertarian freedom or compatibilism. In developing this position, Perkins drew on the thought of various Reformers such as Peter Martyr Vermigli and Zacharias Ursinus, on the nuanced positions of medieval scholastics, and on several contemporary Roman Catholic representatives of the so-called second scholasticism. His work was a major contribution to early modern Reformed thought both in England and on the continent. His influence in England extended both to the Reformed heritage of the Church of England and to English Puritanism. On the Continent, his work contributed to the main lines of Reformed orthodoxy and to the piety of the Dutch Second Reformation.

Al ser influenciada por el contexto social, la lengua resulta ser un objeto de estudio dinámico, en perpetuo movimiento. Así pues, no sorprende que la violencia del narcotráfico haya generado una nueva forma de lenguaje – denominada narcolenguaje – que busca dar cuenta de nuevas realidades. Una creación léxica que resulta necesaria para referirse al mundo del crimen organizado: sustancias ilícitas, modus operandi criminal, agentes delictivos, armas, cuerpos de las víctimas, entre otros. La violencia del narcotráfico en México. Análisis lexicológico propone un acercamiento desde un enfoque sociolingüístico a la terminología utilizada para nombrar la violencia del narcotráfico, a partir de un corpus conformado por fuentes literarias y periodísticas publicadas entre 2008 y 2020. Después de proponer una definición de la violencia tomando en consideración tanto los elementos constitutivos de esta noción compleja como los términos que se le asocian, la primera parte del estudio se centra en la constitución del campo y de los subcampos semánticos, enfocándose en el léxico utilizado por los agentes involucrados directa o indirectamente en la violencia del tráfico de drogas en México. El trabajo consiste luego en el análisis del argot de los narcotraficantes, explorando las primeras huellas de la jerga del hampa en México para descubrir más adelante las creaciones argóticas más representativas de esta forma de lenguaje. El tercer y último capítulo propone estudiar la otra cara del narcolenguaje, es decir, una terminología creada “desde arriba”, la cual es utilizada por las autoridades, los agentes de la ley, los periodistas e incluso por la población en general, para nombrar un fenómeno violento relativamente reciente. Si parte de esta terminología no es totalmente nueva, también nos encontramos con frecuentes neologismos para designar una realidad en mutación casi permanente, especialmente cuando se trata de denominar a los agentes delictivos y sus métodos criminales. Por una parte, el estudio de las diferentes estrategias lingüísticas nos permite comprender los distintos procesos de creación léxica y por otra, el abundante corpus consultado ilustra la gran extensión, riqueza y originalidad del narcolenguaje. Debido al carácter reciente y actual del fenómeno, este análisis lexicológico abre puertas para trabajos posteriores de la misma índole.

Con motivo de los 40 años transcurridos desde la Declaración de Alma-Ata, el 11 y 12 de diciembre de 2017 la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) convocó en Quito el Foro Regional “Salud Universal en el Siglo XXI: 40 años de Alma-Ata”. Como parte de este movimiento regional la Directora de la OPS, la Dra. Carissa F. Etienne tomó la iniciativa de crear una Comisión de Alto Nivel, denominada “Salud Universal en el Siglo XXI: 40 años de Alma-Ata”, presidida por la Dra. Michelle Bachelet y el Embajador Sr. Néstor Méndez, y conformada por un grupo interdisciplinario de expertos regionales. Entre ellos había representantes de la comunidad, la academia y actores políticos, como ex ministros de salud y líderes de sindicatos y movimientos de diferentes grupos sociales. El objetivo de la Comisión fue elaborar recomendaciones para la Directora de OPS que permitieran hacer efectivo el derecho a la salud de las personas, entendido como un derecho humano fundamental, a partir del análisis de los avances y los desafíos que tienen los sistemas de salud en la Región de las Américas. El presente documento refleja el posicionamiento de la Comisión en torno a la Atención Primaria de Salud (APS) y la búsqueda de soluciones para hacer efectivo el derecho a la salud, además del enfoque utilizado para orientar el debate, el análisis y las recomendaciones sobre cómo garantizar este derecho. El documento se basa en los reportes elaborados por cinco grupos temáticos: a) modelo de atención de salud, b) modelo institucional, c) modelo de financiamiento, d) salud y protección social y e) recursos humanos de salud, los cuales están disponibles como anexos a este informe. As part of this regional movement, PAHO Director Dr. Carissa F. Etienne convened a High-Level Commission: Universal Health in the 21st Century: 40 Years of Alma-Ata, chaired by Dr. Michelle Bachelet and Ambassador Néstor Mendez, and made up of an interdisciplinary group of regional experts, including representatives from communities and academia, as well as political actors, such as former health ministers, trade union leaders, and representatives of different social movements. The objective of the Commission was to develop recommendations for the PAHO Director on how to give effect to the right to health as a fundamental human right, based on an analysis of the progress and challenges faced by health systems in the Region of the Americas. This document reflects the Commission’s position regarding primary health care (PHC), the search for solutions to ensure the right to health, and the approach taken in discussions, analysis, and recommendations on how to guarantee this right. It is based on reports prepared by the five thematic groups addressing: a) health care model, b) institutional model, c) financing model, d) health and social protection, and e) human resources for health (see annexes to the present report). The thematic groups were led by members of the Commission, bringing together a great number of academic experts and social movements from different countries in the Region. In this report, the Commission presents 10 recommendations for achieving health for all in the Region of the Americas in the 21st century.
