Анотація:
The probability of earthquake occurrence in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria was studied in this research. The resonant column/bender element tests were used for the study. Series of analysis were carried out on compacted silt in subsoil strata obtained from various locations in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom States. The effects of confinement on frequency, shear modulus, shear velocity and damping ratio were studied. The tests results revealed that confinement has effects on the investigated parameters. Thus, frequency response increases with increase in confinement pressure. Also, the resonance column test at various confinements revealed changes in shear modulus, accelerometer output and damping ratio. Accordingly, there was high disparity in the tested parameters as confinement pressure was increased. Similarly, the bender element tests also showed that pressure has effect on shear wave-velocity, shear modulus and damping ratio confinement. The shear modulus and shear wave-velocity generally increased as confinement pressure was increased, while damping ratio decreases as confinement pressure was increased. The variations in Resonance Column/Bender Element test parameters showed that the silty soil in the Niger Delta region, an oil and gas rich area, is likely to experience earthquake in the future. Therefore, geological data should be collated for monitoring, especially as several geological activities take place in the region.

The study investigated the earthquake potential in Niger Delta region of Nigeria. A series of resonant column and bender element test was performed on compacted clay soil samples across the investigated Niger Delta States, which showed the influence of confinement on frequency, shear modulus, shear velocity and damping ratio. The confinement in clay was high. The frequency response increases with pressure increase. Also, the resonance column test at various confinements revealed changes in shear modulus, accelerometer output and damping ratio. Thus, there was high variation in the test parameters as confinement pressure was increased. Similarly, the bender element tests also showed that pressure has effect on shear wave-velocity, shear modulus and damping ratio confinement. Although, unlike Resonance Column tests, the shear modulus and shear wave-velocity generally increased as confinement pressure was increased, while for damping ratio it decreases as confinement pressure was increased. The variations in resonance column/binder element test parameters showed that the Niger Delta region, as an oil and gas area, is susceptible to earthquake. Therefore, continuous monitoring of oil exploration activities must be put in place.

AbstractBirth statistics for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Region were collected for 757 151 confinements from 1969 to 1989 (467 513 Black, 194 375 White, 67 250 Coloured and 28 013 Indian confinements). From 1969 to 1978 data on the sexes of twins were also collected for 375 203 of the confinements (203 504 Black, 129 631 White, 28 253 Coloured and 13 815 Indian confinements). A twin confinement was defined as two deliveries during one confinement. Twinning rates (TRs), defined as the number of twin confinements per 1000 total confinements, were calculated per year for each population group and from 1969–1978 estimates of the relative proportions of dizygotic (DZ) and monozygotic (MZ) twins were calculated and thus the relative DZTRs and MZTRs. A significant decline in Black and Coloured TRs was observed between 1969 and 1989. A significant decline in Black DZTR but not Black MZTR was observed between 1969 and 1978, the Coloured twin sample was too small to show significant trends over this period. It is probable that the overall decline in Black twinning may be explained by a decline in the DZTR. An analysis of birth statistics for 159 748 confinements (134 504 Black and 25 244 White confinements) collected as part of a prospective study of TRs in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Region from 1988 to 1990, indicated that the Black TR continued to decline at least until the end of 1990. TRs in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Region calculated from City Health Department birth statistics collected from 1988 to 1990 were: 13.8 and 10.77 for the Black and White populations, respectively. TRs for this period calculated from the combined birth statistics of 14 hospitals, nursing homes and maternity clinics across the region were: 12.4 and 10.88 for the Black and White populations, respectively.

A cylindrically symmetric, electrically driven, dissipative, energy-conserving magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium model is considered. The high-magnetic-field Braginskii electron electrical resistivity η parallel to a constant axial magnetic field B and ion thermal conductivity ĸ perpendicular to B are included in an energy equation and in Ohm's law. The expressions for η and ĸ depend on number density and temperature, which are functions of radius that are obtained as part of the equilibrium solution. The model has plasma-confining solutions, by which are meant solutions characterized by the separation of the plasma into two regions separated by a relatively thin transition region that is an internal boundary layer across which temperature and current density vary rapidly. The inner region has a temperature, pressure and current density that are much larger than in the outer region. The number density and thermal conductivity attain their minimum values in the transition region. The model has an intrinsic value of β, about 6.6%, which must be exceeded in order that a plasma-confining solution exist. The model has an intrinsic length scale, which, for plasma-confining solutions, is a measure of the thickness of the transition region separating the inner and outer regions of plasma. A larger class of transport coefficients is modelled by artificially changing η and ĸ by changing the constant coefficients ηO and ĸO that occur in their expressions. Increasing ĸO transforms a state that does not exhibit confinement into one that does, improves the confinement in a state that already exhibits it, and leads to an increase in ĸ in the confined region of plasma. The improvement in confinement consists in a decrease in the thickness of the transition region. Decreasing ηO subject to certain constraints, also transforms a state that does not exhibit confinement into one that does, improves the confinement in a state that already exhibits it, and leads to a decrease in η in the confined region of plasma. Increasing ηO up to a critical point increases the current, temperature, and volume of the confined region of plasma, and causes the thickness of the transition region to increase. If ηO is increased beyond the critical point, a plasma-confining state cannot exist. In all cases it is found that an increase in ĸ and a decrease in η in the confined region of plasma are associated with an improvement in the confinement properties of the equilibrium state. If the pressure and temperature are given on the cylinder wall, the equilibrium bifurcates when the electric field decreases below a critical value. The equilibrium can bifurcate into a state that exhibits confinement and a state that does not.

Recent direct drive implosion experiments, performed on the OMEGA laser, have been analyzed by comparing full two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) numerical simulations. The 2D simulations result in a fusion yield higher than experimental results. A simple full-mixing model, leaving only the clean region, overestimates yield degradation. Fully turbulent mixing is expected to develop in most of the mixing region; however regions slightly beyond the radius of the most penetrating spike are expected to remain clean and to contribute to fusion yield. One can correct the mixing model by redefining the clean region. Accounting for this unmixed region results in improved agreement with experimental results. Differences in central pressure, density, temperature, and fusion rate in implosions dominated by low mode number perturbations imply that mix effects might not be limited to the mix region, and that 2D simulations are necessary to describe the large scale flow affecting the central region. The same analysis has been undertaken for implosions with different convergence ratios, but with similar initial perturbation spectra. These implosions should be compared to implosions dominated by high mode number perturbations, which might be described by models based on 1D simulations.

Confinement can induce substantial changes in the physical properties of macromolecules in suspension. Soft confinement is a particular class of restriction where the boundaries that constraint the particles in a region of the space are not well-defined. This scenario leads to a broader structural and dynamical behavior than observed in systems enclosed between rigid walls. In this contribution, we study the ordering and diffusive properties of a two-dimensional colloidal model system subjected to a one-dimensional parabolic trap. Increasing the trap strength makes it possible to go through weak to strong confinement, allowing a dimensional transition from two- to one-dimension. The non-monotonic response of the static and dynamical properties to the gradual dimensionality change affects the system phase behavior. We find that the particle dynamics are connected to the structural transitions induced by the parabolic trap. In particular, at low and intermediate confinement regimes, complex structural and dynamical scenarios arise, where the softness of the external potential induces melting and freezing, resulting in faster and slower particle diffusion, respectively. Besides, at strong confinements, colloids move basically along one direction, and the whole system behaves structurally and dynamically similar to a one-dimensional colloidal system.

We investigated the stability properties of breather soliton trains in a three-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with Feshbach-resonance management of the scattering length. This is done so as to generate both attractive and repulsive interaction. The condensate is confined only by a one-dimensional optical lattice and we consider strong, moderate and weak confinement. By strong confinement we mean a situation in which a quasi two-dimensional soliton is created. Moderate confinement admits a fully three-dimensional soliton. Weak confinement allows individual solitons to interact. Stability properties are investigated by several theoretical methods such as a variational analysis, treatment of motion in effective potential wells, and collapse dynamics. Armed with all the information forthcoming from these methods, we then undertake a numerical calculation. Our theoretical predictions are fully confirmed, perhaps to a higher degree than expected. We compare regions of stability in parameter space obtained from a fully three-dimensional analysis with those from a quasi two-dimensional treatment, when the dynamics in one direction are frozen. We find that in the three-dimensional case the stability region splits into two parts. However, as we tighten the confinement, one of the islands of stability moves toward higher frequencies and the lower frequency region becomes more and more like that for the quasi two-dimensional case. We demonstrate these solutions in direct numerical simulations and, importantly, suggest a way of creating robust three-dimensional solitons in experiments in a BEC in a one-dimensional lattice.

In 1978, Friedberg and Lee introduced the phenomenological soliton bag model of hadrons, generalizing the MIT bag model developed in 1974 shortly after the formulation of QCD. In this model, quarks and gluons are confined due to coupling with a real scalar field ρ, which tends to zero outside some compact region S⊂R3 determined dynamically from the equations of motion. The gauge coupling in the soliton bag model runs as the inverse power of ρ, already at the semiclassical level. We show that this model arises naturally as a consequence of introducing the warped product metric dsM2+ρ2dsG2 on the principal G-bundle P(M,G)≅M×G with a non-Abelian group G over Minkowski space M=R3,1. Confinement of quarks and gluons in a compact domain S⊂R3 is a consequence of the collapse of the bundle manifold M×G to M outside S due to shrinking of the group manifold G to a point. We describe the formation of such regions S as a dynamical process controlled by the order parameter field ρ.

Droplet dynamics in microfluidic applications is significantly influenced by surfactants. It remains a research challenge to model and simulate droplet behaviour including deformation, breakup and coalescence, especially in the confined microfluidic environment. Here, we propose a hybrid method to simulate interfacial flows with insoluble surfactants. The immiscible two-phase flow is solved by an improved lattice Boltzmann colour-gradient model which incorporates a Marangoni stress resulting from non-uniform interfacial tension, while the convection–diffusion equation which describes the evolution of surfactant concentration in the entire fluid domain is solved by a finite difference method. The lattice Boltzmann and finite difference simulations are coupled through an equation of state, which describes how surfactant concentration influences interfacial tension. Our method is first validated for the surfactant-laden droplet deformation in a three-dimensional (3D) extensional flow and a 2D shear flow, and then applied to investigate the effect of surfactants on droplet dynamics in a 3D shear flow. Numerical results show that, at low capillary numbers, surfactants increase droplet deformation, due to reduced interfacial tension by the average surfactant concentration, and non-uniform effects from non-uniform capillary pressure and Marangoni stresses. The role of surfactants on the critical capillary number ($Ca_{cr}$) of droplet breakup is investigated for various confinements (defined as the ratio of droplet diameter to wall separation) and Reynolds numbers. For clean droplets,$Ca_{cr}$first decreases and then increases with confinement, and the minimum value of$Ca_{cr}$is reached at a confinement of 0.5; for surfactant-laden droplets,$Ca_{cr}$exhibits the same variation in trend for confinements lower than 0.7, but, for higher confinements,$Ca_{cr}$is almost a constant. The presence of surfactants decreases$Ca_{cr}$for each confinement, and the decrease is also attributed to the reduction in average interfacial tension and non-uniform effects, which are found to prevent droplet breakup at low confinements but promote breakup at high confinements. In either clean or surfactant-laden cases,$Ca_{cr}$first remains almost unchanged and then decreases with increasing Reynolds number, and a higher confinement or Reynolds number favours ternary breakup. Finally, we study the collision of two equal-sized droplets in a shear flow in both surfactant-free and surfactant-contaminated systems with the same effective capillary numbers. It is identified that the non-uniform effects in the near-contact interfacial region immobilize the interfaces when two droplets are approaching each other and thus inhibit their coalescence.

En permettant de visualiser de manière sélective les dynamiques des particules dans les cellules, la microscopie de fluorescence est un outil de premier plan pour la recherche biomédicale. Il existe par conséquent une forte demande d'outils algorithmiques capables d'analyser automatiquement des données microscopiques brutes. Après une présentation de la théorie et des techniques entourant les dynamiques des particules, la microscopie de fluorescence, les méthodes de suivi et la classification de mouvements, nous présentons dans cette thèse une nouvelle méthode de cartographie basée sur des estimateurs à noyaux spatio-temporels permettant d'estimer de manière robuste la diffusion et la dérive intracellulaires à partir des données de suivi. Nous l'évaluons dans un ensemble étendu d'expériences utilisant des données simulées, réelles, 2D et 3D et montrons que notre méthode fournit des cartes de diffusion et de dérive précises et exactes tout en étant plus performante que les méthodes existantes. En tant que telle, elle permet aux biologistes d'étudier les dynamiques intracellulaires de particules spécifiquement marquées avec une plus large gamme d'acquisitions et de techniques de microscopie de fluorescence. En outre, nous présentons une méthode de détection de domaines de confinement utilisant également le suivi de particules et la classification de mouvements
Fluorescence microscopy is a tool of primary interest in biomedical research as it allows to selectively visualize particle dynamics within the cell. Hence, there is a high demand for algorithmic tools capable of automatically analyzing raw microscopic data. After a presentation of the theory and techniques surrounding particle dynamics, fluorescence microscopy, tracking methods and motion classification, we present in this thesis a new mapping method based on spatiotemporal kernel estimators that robustly estimate intracellular diffusion and drift from tracking data. We evaluate it in an extensive set of experiments using simulated, real, 2D and 3D data and show that our method provides precise and accurate diffusion and drift maps while outperforming existing methods. As such, it allows biologists to study intracellular dynamics of specifically tagged particles with a wider range of acquisitions and fluorescence microscopy techniques. In addition, we present a confinement domain detection method, using particle tracks and motion classification as well

Using a spatially-resolving x-ray spectrometer system, the toroidal rotation velocity in Alcator C-Mod plasmas is measured and analyzed. At the L-H and L-I transition, there is a co-current movement in the toroidal rotation velocity.The propagation of this rotational velocity from the edge to the core of the torus was measured following the L- to H- and L- to I-mode transitions. A hyperbolic tangent fit was used to determine a single variable for rise time in rotational velocity. The hyperbolic tangent fit parameter acts as a proxy for the global momentum confinement time, which is then compared to other plasma parameters. Through this compaxison, we found an decrease in rise time in correlation with increasing density(n)/current(I), particularly distinctive in the range of 1-2.5 x 10²⁰ (MA x m³)-¹. Due to a lack of overlap in density between I- and H-mode, we find this may be indicative of an overall decrease in rise time between L- to I- and L- to H-mode transitions. In order to explore this possibility, we must achieve I-mode runs with the same current and density as Hmode to determine if there is still a decrease between the two transitions.

Cette these a concerne l'etude de l'interaction laser matiere dans le cadre bien particulier du choc laser en regime de confinement par eau. L'objectif etait de comprendre l'influence des phenomenes de claquage dans l'eau et leurs effets sur les pressions generees par le plasma confine. Ce travail a d'abord contribue au developpement d'un diagnostic par velocimetrie doppler pour caracteriser les ondes de choc induites par laser en regime de confinement par eau. Les resultats obtenus ont permis de determiner l'influence du claquage sur le plasma confine pour differents parametres (longueur d'onde (1. 064, 0. 532, 0. 355 et 0. 308 m), duree d'impulsion (10, 25 et 50 ns)) dans une gamme d'intensite laser variant de 1 a 30 gw/cm#2. De meme, d'autres parametres plus lies au procede lui meme ont ete etudies (taille de tache, revetement, nature du materiau). Dans chaque cas, le code numerique shylac (de propagation des ondes de choc) a ete utilise pour la validation des mesures de pression par velocimetrie doppler. L'interaction dans l'eau de confinement a ete etudiee par camera rapide intensifiee, spectroscopie d'emission et faisceau laser sonde. Ces experiences ont mis en evidence que le claquage limitant survient uniquement a la surface de l'eau de confinement. Les mecanismes physiques intervenant lors de l'interaction ont ete analyses et une description est proposee pour interpreter les resultats experimentaux. Ces resultats sur le claquage correles aux mesures de pressions par velocimetrie doppler definissent correctement les limites actuelles du choc laser et permettent de determiner les caracteristiques d'une source laser adaptee et les conditions operatoires optimales pour le traitement industriel par choc laser de tous les materiaux metalliques.

This work presents an analysis of basically all forms of punishment and prisons that there has been in homeland legislation, taken as a requirement for obtaining allowance benefit aid-imprisonment, whether as a result of criminal or civil illegal practices. Because it is a benefit aimed at protecting the dependents of the insurected inmate in prison in reason of that are examined with circumspection, the meaning of the utterance and the dependent relationship of dependents exhaustive and lectured about the usefulness of the existence of exceptions contained in it. Other regulatory requirements are also analyzed, as e.g., subjects, initial term, the final term suspension, termination, initial monthly rent, allowance, accumulation, effects of death, even assumed. As a scientific work, due to the academic environment at a fast pace and well combined, and the subtle questions of intellectual stimulation that living in an academic graduate stricto sensu between faculty and students, to encourage thought and provoke new thoughts and research, as well as the fruit of experience in practice of the application of Social Relations, including the sub area of Social Security Law, it contains criticism, including unconstitutionality of rules and suggestions for regulatory changes (additions and revisions), always under the pretext of improving the benefit under discussion
Apresenta este trabalho uma analise praticamente de todas as modalidades de penas e de prisões existentes na legislação pátria, tidas como um dos requisitos para a obtenção do benefício auxílioreclusão, seja este decorrente de práticas de ilícitos criminais ou civis. Por se tratar de um benefício que objetiva a proteção dos dependentes do segurado recluso, em razão da prisão deste, são examinados com circunspeção, o significado do enunciado dependentes e a relação taxativa de dependentes, bem como dissertado com proficuidade sobre a existência de exceções nela constantes. Outros requisitos normativos também são analisados, como v.g., sujeitos, termo inicial, termo final suspensão, cessação, renda mensal inicial, abono, acumulação, efeitos da morte, ainda que presumida. Abstract The luminescence of Ⅲ-Ⅴ based light emitting diodes was investigated through three kinds of selective circuit region confinement techniques. To increase the external quantum efficiency of a light-emitting diode while limiting its forward voltage, we prepared both (AlxGa1-x)0.5In0.5P LED and the buried oxides through selective wet oxidation of the AlAs layers of AlAs–GaAs distributed Bragg reflectors. The wet oxidation process forms a stable AlOx material that acts as an insulation layer and affects both the carrier and optical confinements. To determine the tradeoff conditions for LED oxidation, we used the Taguchi method which is a robust technique that is often used to analyze significant trends that occur under a set of the oxidation conditions. In this study, we used an L9 orthogonal array to measure the effects that a series of factors have upon the of the LED in an effort to limit the values of Vf. Relative to the as-grown LED, the oxidized LEDs that had been treated under the tradeoff wet-oxidation conditions displayed a sharply enhanced brightness (62.4% increase) with only a slightly increased value of Vf (only a 24.5% increase). Next, we used the selective ring-region activation technique to restrain the surface leakage current and to monitor the luminescence characteristics of InGaN–GaN MQW blue light-emitting diodes. To access the current blocking region after forming a periphery high-resistance ring-region of the Mg-doped GaN layer and to reduce the degree of carrier trapping by the surface recombination centers, we deposited a Ti film onto the Mg-doped GaN epitaxial layer to form a high-resistance current blocking region. Furthermore, the luminescence characteristics could be improved by varying the width of the highly resistive region of the ; in our best result, the relative electroluminescence intensity was 30% (@20 mA) higher than that of the as-grown blue LEDs. Finally, we also investigated the improvement of the light extraction efficiency of InGaN/GaN MQW blue light-emitting diodes via the sidewall wet etching method. Meanwhile, the relationship between the FWHM of the (102)-rocking curve and the wet etching time was also studied. The etching time is longer as the FWHM of the (102)-rocking curve increased. That means the etching conditions could be controlled without ant over-etching phenomena. Compare with the standard LED, the output power was enhance 11.4% from the SWE LED under a 20 mA operating current.

This article provides an overview of nanotribology, with particular emphasis on the scalable regime where contact dimensions, topographical perturbations, confinement scale and molecular dimensions are of the same order. It first defines nanotribology and describes some of the instruments used to assess the physics and chemistry of materials in the contact region, including the atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, and quartz crystal microbalance. It then considers the interfacial phenomena and interaction forces as well as the microscopic origins of friction, focusing on Amonton's Law at the single asperity, atomistic modelling of adhesion and friction, and analysis of coherence in molecular lubrication by means of the Eyring equation. The article also examines the problem of boundary lubrication in two cases: oil in confinement and self-assembled additives in confinement.

Abstract Nanometre sized structures made of semiconductors, insulators and metals and grown by modern growth technologies or by chemical synthesis exhibit novel electronic and optical phenomena due to confinement of electrons and photons. Strong interactions between electrons and photons in narrow regions lead to inhibited spontaneous emission, thresholdless laser operation, and Bose Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons in microcavities. Generation of sub-wavelength radiation by surface Plasmon-polaritons at metal-semiconductor interfaces, creation of photonic band gap in dielectrics, and realization of nanometer sized semiconductor or insulator structures with negative permittivity and permeability, known as metamaterials, are further examples in the area of nanophotonics. The studies help develop Spasers and plasmonic nanolasers of subwavelength dimensions, paving the way to use plasmonics in future data centres and high speed computers working at THz bandwidth with less than a few fJ/bit dissipation. The present book intends to serveas a textbook for graduate students and researchers intending to have introductory ideas of semiconductor nanophotonics. It gives an introduction to electron-photon interactions in quantum wells, wires and dots and then discusses the processes in microcavities, photonic band gaps and metamaterials and related applications. The phenomena and device applications under strong light-matter interactions are discussed by mostly using classical and semi-classical theories. Numerous examples and problems accompany each chapter.

Gangs are a fact of life in jails and prisons. The extent and impact of gang activity on a facility will depend upon the size and geographic location of the facility. Smaller jails and prisons, or facilities in rural areas, are more likely to be involved with local or regional groups, also known as street gangs, while large facilities in urban areas will be affected more by nationally known or connected gangs. One survey of Florida prisoners found that inmates who were suspected or confirmed gang members were 35% more likely to commit violent acts than non-members. In a study of 2,158 male inmates in the Arizona Department of Corrections, gang-affiliated inmates were more than twice as likely as nonaffiliated inmates to commit an assault during the first three years of confinement Since institutional management often involves restriction of privileges, placement on long-term segregation, or transfer to a control unit prison, advocacy groups and individual inmates have filed suit against these policies based on First and Eighth Amendment, religious freedom, and anti-discrimination claims. Gang validation procedures themselves have been challenged as arbitrary and inaccurate, leading to inappropriate segregation or restrictions on prisoners who have exhibited no institutional violence. Psychiatrists need to be aware of the dynamics of gang leadership, membership or involvement when working with any gang member, as that will affect their ability and interest in collaborative treatment. These issues and best practices for intervention will be presented in this chapter.

Ramírez-Blanco reads the complex representations of the “natural” realm that have taken place during those times in which people felt further than ever from other forms of life, human or non-human. Confinement in many cities gave rise to empty streets, and vacant buildings, creating images of uncanny beauty that can be perceived as a kind of “pandemic sublime”. However, many people trapped at home became ever more nostalgic for an idealized nature, perceived through their computers and phones, and which mediated in different fictionalized or direct ways with the non-human realm. Through videos, phone calls with non-human animals, or even a “back to the land” movement after confinement, this chapter traces how the “pandemic sublime” has lead to the construction of what can be termed a “pandemic pastoral”. The author makes clear how, in its sentimental and non-ideological dimensions, this imaginary needs to be politicized if we want to respond to the next global emergency: that of present climate change and environmental destruction which led to the pandemic in the first place.

The alteration in daily life resulting from the pandemic stimulates symptomatic presentations of the unconscious in the lives of people for whom reality has become a strange experience derived from the protocols, objects, and messages of the so-called new normal. The sixth chapter titled Going Viral: Survival Design explores those protocols, objects and messages that have become central to life during the pandemic. Face masks, cleaning products, banners, or other things have functioned as markers and symptoms of the situation. Some of them have been inventions with a strong DIY element, such as the hats created to enforce social distancing in Chinese schools. The chapter explores issues of functionality and objecthood in relation to everyday life, and domesticity, dealing with creativity within these realms; but also it explores the implications for the public space, especially those derived from the messages placed everywhere. An explosion of communication filled windows, doors and even the streets once we were allowed to escape confinement. This can be understood as if the social body affected by the pandemic were talking about fragility, urgency and survival produced by the ineffective neoliberal paradigm. In the social body’s many voices we can find references and tools to interpret the imperative viral reality that requires a search for new keys and paradigms.

Photonic crystal (PhC) has witnessed an unprecedented research interest since its discovery by Yablonovitch and John in 1987. PhC has undergone substantial theoretical and experimental study because of its periodic dielectric structure and ability to guide and manipulate light at the optical wavelength scale. The photonic band gap (PBG), one of the fundamental characteristics of PhC, prohibits the transmission of light inside a definite wavelength range. The PBG property of PhC opens up enormous opportunities for envisioning a wide range of applications like communication, filtering, bio-sensing, interconnector, modulator, polarizer, environmental safety, food processing etc. However, a peculiar property can be observed when defects are added to PhC, the periodicity of this dielectric structure is disrupted, allowing PC to exhibit high electromagnetic field confinement, a little more volume, and feeble confinement loss. The propagation of light can be altered and engineered by altering the structural characteristics of PhC or introducing appropriate materials into the rods of PC. Among the different applications, optical interconnect is the most escalating application in a photonic integrated circuit. This chapter addresses a novel 2D photonic crystal waveguide for optical amplifier application. The proposed structure comprises 9×9 circular rods of Si with air in the background. A sequence of Si rods is removed to create a defect in the 90o shape. The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) can be adjusted to envisage the electric field allocation along the 90o bend defective region. Several geometrical factors, such as the radius of the Si rods and the gap between lattices, are judiciously optimized in order to realize strong light confinement inside the defect region. The intensity of incident light and the transmitted light is evaluated through numerical analysis, where it is found that the transmitted intensity from the waveguide is much higher than the intensity of incident light, which ensures that the projected construction can act as an optical amplifier. Apart from this, the bending loss close to the bending area of the photonic waveguide is investigated. A small bending loss of the order of 10-5 exists, which indicates efficient guidance of light along the 90o bend path. Lastly, the confinement loss along the defect region is studied, which is found to be in the order of 10-11. So, the light propagation with negligible loss indicates that the future PCW could be an appropriate applicant for optical interconnect applications.

The pandemic caused by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused several behavioral changes in the population, including eating behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the eating behavior of adult women in the Metropolitan Region of Recife during the lockdown period due to SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Data collection was carried out through an electronic form with 431 women. The questionnaire contained questions about anthropometric data, social distance following, and the TFEQ-R21 questionnaire covering eating behavior and emotional feeding. The results obtained were that 80.5% of women were socially distant. About 37% of women were overweight, and 90.3% reported perceiving weight variation during the confinement period. An estimate of the risk of gaining or losing weight as a function of body condition was not found before and during social confinement. As for the TFEQ-R21 questionnaire, the domains addressed showed a positive correlation with weight variations in some of its items. It was concluded that an adverse emotional situation arising from a pandemic situation favors emotional eating. It is suggested that individualized nutritional care is necessary for the creation of efficient methods that aim to improve the relationship with food and to prevent the emergence of future eating disorders.

Nanoparticles of noble metals have unique properties including large surface energies, surface plasmon excitation, quantum confinement effect, and high electron accumulation. Among these nanoparticles, silver (Ag) nanoparticles have strong responses in visible light region due to its high plasmon excitation. These unique properties depend on the size, shape, interparticle separation and surrounded medium of Ag nanoparticles. Indium tin oxide (ITO) is widely used as an electrode for flat panel devices in such as electronic, optoelectronic and sensing applications. Nowadays, Ag nanoparticles were deposited on ITO to improve their optical and electrical properties. Plasma-assisted hot-filament evaporation (PAHFE) technique produced high-density of crystalline Ag nanoparticles with controlling in the size and distribution on ITO surface. In this chapter, we will discuss about the PAHFE technique for the deposition of Ag nanoparticles on ITO and influences of the experimental parameters on the physical and optical properties, and electronic structure of the deposited Ag nanoparticles on ITO.

Flow characteristics of a confined annular jet of a viscoplastic non-Newtonian fluid were investigated numerically within the steady laminar flow regime. A parametric study is implemented to investigate the influence of confinement ratio, CR, inner-to-outer annular nozzle diameter ratio, k, and yield number, Y, over the following range of parameters: CR = {5, 40}, k = {0, 0.5, 0.8}, and Y = {0, 0.5, 1}. Central and outer recirculation regions typically characterize the flow of a confined Newtonian annular jet. However, extent of the outer recirculation region and recirculation intensities of both the central and outer regions were found to substantially diminish with the yield number for all confinement and annular diameter ratios, resulting in the elimination of recirculation throughout the whole flow field at high yield numbers. The confinement ratio has a dramatic impact on the recirculation intensity of the outer region, and centerline velocity and jet momentum evolution, only in the case of Newtonian flows. Axial penetration of the submerged annular jet decreases with the inner-to-outer annular nozzle diameter ratio and the yield numbers for all confinement ratios.

The flow behavior of a confined viscoplastic non-Newtonian jet is investigated numerically within the steady laminar flow regime. The Bingham constitutive equation is used to model the rheology of interest. A parametric study is implemented to investigate the influence of confinement ratio and rheology over the following range of parameters: Confinement ratio, CR = {5, 10, 20}, and Yield number, Y = {0, 0.5, 2}. A large corner recirculation region typically characterizes the flow of a confined Newtonian jet. However, in the case of a Bingham viscoplastic jet, once a critical yield number is exceeded, flow recirculation is eliminated and a stagnant corner region is formed. The confinement ratio has a dramatic impact on the recirculation intensity and the evolution characteristics of the jet only in the case of Newtonian flows, i.e. Y = 0. In general, a more intense recirculation is associated with higher confinement ratios. The extent and the strength of flow recirculation are found to significantly diminish with the yield number. The axial penetration of the confined jet substantially increases with the confinement ratio for Newtonian fluids only and decreases with the yield numbers for all confinement ratios.

The effect of confinement (flame-wall interactions) on the response of a turbulent, swirl-stabilized flame is experimentally examined, with a focus on the shape and structure of these flames. A series of three cylindrical combustors of 0.11, 0.15 and 0.19 m diameter are used to vary the degree of confinement experienced by the flame. Using CH* chemiluminescence images, the shape of the flame in each combustor is described. These images are then further analyzed and reveal marked similarities in the geometry and location of these flames in a defined ‘flame base’ region near the combustor inlet. This similarity in location of the flame base leads to a similarity in the response of this portion of the flame to imposed oscillations. In particular, the phase of the fluctuations in this region are shown to be the same in each confinement. The nature of the fluctuations in the mean flame position are also shown to be similar in each confinement. These results indicate that the geometry of the flame in the base region is not a function of confinement and that the flames are responding to the same convective mechanisms, and in the same manner, in this region of the flame.

The black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis) is the most secretive of the secretive marsh birds and one of the least understood species in North America. On the east coast, eastern black rails historically bred in tidal and freshwater marshes along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts, south to Florida. Within the mid-Atlantic region suitable black rail habitat is concentrated in the high marsh along the upper elevational zone of salt marshes. This zone is dominated by salt meadow hay (Spartina patens), saltgrass (Distichlis spicata), and is often interspersed with shrubs such as marsh elder (Iva frutescens) or saltbush (Baccharis hamilifolia). North Carolina has been a stronghold for eastern black rails within the mid-Atlantic region, with the marsh complexes associated with the lower Pamlico sound supporting one of largest concentrations and highest densities of eastern black rails throughout their range. However, even within these marshes, eastern black rail populations have experienced declines marked by reductions in occupied sites and decline in numbers within historic strongholds. Evidenced by increasing confinement to the highest portions of the high marsh in recent years, sea-level rise and increased rates of high marsh inundation are likely a major contributing factor to declines. With the population of eastern black rails declining over 75% in the last 10-20 years, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally listed the eastern black rail as threatened under the endangered species act on 9 November 2020 (USFWS 2020). To fulfill the need for information to guide management decisions on projects at Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras National Seashores and to aide in (potential?) future designations of critical habitat, we conducted widespread, systematic surveys for black rails and other secretive marsh birds within the parks during the breeding seasons of 2022 and 2023. A total of 1,222 surveys were conducted at 431 points over the course of 2 years. In addition to recording detections of all focal species, we recorded detections of 6 eastern black rails on North Core Banks where they were not previously known to occur. The population of black rails occupying the high marsh habitat on North Core Banks could account for 5-10% of the North Carolina black rail population and increase the known sites occupied within the state.
