This concluding chapter revisits the core argument of the book—that is, that a definition of peace is much broader than the mere absence of violence. It discusses the different approaches the three authors have taken to define peace and to develop reliable measures of peace that can extend beyond time and place. The chapter also considers the lessons about the field of peace research that the three authors learned while developing their individual concepts, which blended in the end to common views on the subject. Finally, the authors lay out a research program for what should be done in the future in this broad, interdisciplinary field. They do not attempt to push a particular program, but do identify how such new programs in the subject should be structured and framed.

This chapter explores a key facet of Freedman’s life as an academic – his work with policymakers and the scholarly connections between King’s College London and Whitehall that he developed. It explores the utility of academic research to policymakers, concluding that much of it has the potential to be of value. However, part of the problem is that the pace of life for politicians and civil servants is relentless, and the need for experts is often driven by unanticipated events. The relationship between the academy and policy makers can have genuine benefits, but isn’t always easy, particularly when evidence bases go against political will as was the case with ‘soft’ drugs. The chapter concludes by recognizing the role played by Freedman in pioneering links between Whitehall and the academy.

This concluding chapter summarizes the main findings of the preceding chapters in light of the model of contextual effects on voter behavior. Accordingly, the processes of communication and politicization are of key importance for contextual effects. By implication, we cannot take for granted that contextual features exert sizable effects on voters’ opinion formation and behavior in each and every case. Findings about contextual effects are also context-sensitive and thus do not lend themselves to generalization by default. These observations suggest that context plays a nuanced and conditional role in voting behavior. Exploring it further should be a focal topic of future research on political behavior and democratic politics.

Part II, ‘Doctrinal Perspectives’, is structured in two chapters: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. The main thrust of Chapter 3 is to unravel whether states are obliged, under international human rights law, to adopt a National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP), and if so, what is the nature and the scope of this obligation. To this end, a content analysis of all the nine core human rights conventions, General Comments, reports, and concluding observations is conducted. The findings of this content analysis show that each of these conventions places upon states parties an immediate obligation to adopt a NHRAP which must be geared towards realizing the rights embodied in the conventions.

Chapter 7 explores in detail the nature of self-respect, with close attention to Rawls’s medley of remarks on the topic. Though his remarks are quite tangled—with numerous apparent inconsistencies among them—they along with some of his other observations can be worked up into an account of self-respect that is highly serviceable for aspirational perfectionism. When the scattered relevant strands of A Theory of Justice and Political Liberalism are brought together and amplified, they underscore the connections between a society’s achievements and the warrantedness of each individual’s self-respect.

Chapter 7 provides a critical overview of landscape protection in EU law. It begins by briefly outlining the impact of EU agricultural policy on European landscapes. It then moves on to ascertain the extent to which the cultural heritage dimension to landscape protection is considered within EU policy, before analysing EU environmental law, particularly environmental impact assessment directives, which include consideration of cultural heritage and the landscape. While the ELC provides for public participation, EU law requires member states to legislate not only for public participation but also for access to justice and broader standing requirements in environmental matters. The implications of this for landscape protection are explored, and some concluding observations are drawn on the role of the EU in landscape governance more broadly.

The conclusion uses the contrast between the English verse anthology Belvedere, published by John Bodenham in 1600, and Erasmus’ proverb collection of 1499 to suggest how literary culture in England evolves in the course of the sixteenth century: the role of literary arbiter is transferred from an international scholar of formidable learning to an upwardly mobile grocer with a taste for poetry, and the resources of literature have been transferred from Latin, the common language of Europe, to common English. This concluding chapter reprises the themes and argument of the book and ends with the observation that by 1600 the commonalty was not just the labouring class, but also constituted a readership and an audience.

On 22 November 2016, the European Commission launched a proposal for a restructuring and insolvency law directive. The Draft Directive marks a further step in the development of a European insolvency framework. The Draft Directive seeks to introduce into the laws of the Member States preventive restructuring frameworks that should enable debtors to restructure at an early stage, thereby avoiding insolvency. It contains provisions that promote a second chance or fresh start for honest entrepreneurs, as well as measures aimed at increasing the efficiency or restructuring, insolvency, and discharge proceedings. This chapter focuses on the preventive restructuring framework contemplated by the Draft Directive. Section 2 addresses the background to the Draft Directive. Section 3 we presents the justification for restructuring plans. Section IV analyzes the Commission's proposals for a preventive restructuring framework in more detail, and Section 5 contains some concluding observations.

This chapter surveys the legal influence of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) on the domestic laws of States in the Middle East region. It analyses ratification, reservation, and reporting practices, the domestic legal status of the ICCPR, and State responses to the Human Rights Committee’s concluding observations. The chapter argues that the ICCPR’s legal influence in the region is structurally hampered due to its lack of authoritative legal status and the dominance of defensive domestic legalism. A significant gap remains between the HRC’s vision of civil and political rights protection grounded in the entrenchment of liberal, democratic, and multicultural laws and the region’s authoritarian or majoritarian political structures that foreground security and treat non-majority identities as threats. The influence of the ICCPR on domestic laws in the Middle East remains a long-term battle, whereby small gains under limited legal opportunity structures remain the overarching norm.

In 2016, African leaders’ growing discontent with the work of the International Criminal Court in Africa culminated in the unexpected withdrawal of three African states parties from the ICC. This chapter examines several key issues connected with the three states’ notifications of withdrawal. The first part examines reasons for the filing of the withdrawal notifications. The second section analyses the likely legal and other consequences of the withdrawal notifications for states parties. In the third part, the chapter considers whether the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights might serve as a suitable African regional alternative or a mechanism that could be complementary to the ICC. The final section offers concluding observations, debating whether the three African states should consider withdrawing their withdrawal notifications and outlining measures that might be taken to avoid, or at least minimize, further withdrawals and to avoid conferring impunity of perpetrators of international crimes in states that have withdrawn from the Rome Statute.

Rather than dwelling on psychoanalytic readings, this literary investigation combines with history of psychology to offer attentive textual readings that explore five key psychological schools: evolutionary psychology, psychoanalysis, behaviourism, existential-humanism, and cognitivism. The varied functions of psychological discourses in science fiction are explored, whether to popularise and prophesy, to imagine utopia or dystopia, to estrange our everyday reality, to comment on science fiction itself, or to abet (or resist) the spread of psychological wisdom. The emotions are an important feature of Jewish life and thought throughout the ages. From biblical descriptions of a God of pathos to early rabbinic and medieval works detailing the virtues, to mystical tracts focused on the inner life, and occasionally portraying emotion filled religious experiences of the adept, there have always been Jewish representations of the affective dimensions of life. In addition, the many ways Jews have actually participated in prayer and in the celebration of holidays, and in the construction of material objects and spaces in which such activities took place, also give evidence of emotional texture of the lives of Jews. John Corrigan's concluding observations in his introduction to Religion and Emotion: Approaches and Interpretations, in which he sets forth a model for future scholarship in this field, provide a standard against which to assess present investigations into Judaism and the emotions. Others who have produced methodologically astute scholarship adding significantly to the understanding of aspects of Jewish thought on the emotions are Michael Fishbane, Daniel Boyarin, and Hava Tirosh-Samuelson.

The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is the principle regional human rights treaty for the African continent. Adopted in 1981, there is now a significant body of jurisprudence and interpretation by its African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the recently established African Court. This volume provides a comprehensive article-by-article legal analysis of the provisions of the Charter as it draws upon the documents adopted by the African Commission, including resolutions, case law, and concluding observations. Where relevant, case law adopted by the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and that of other sub-regional courts and tribunals and domestic courts in Africa, are also incorporated. The book examines not only the substantive rights in the African Charter but also the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and provides a full examination of its mandate. Анотація:

This work is a short textbook on general relativity and gravitation, aimed at readers with a broad range of interests in physics, from cosmology to gravitational radiation to high energy physics to condensed matter theory. It is an introductory text, but it has also been written as a jumping-off point for readers who plan to study more specialized topics. As a textbook, it is designed to be usable in a one-quarter course (about 25 hours of instruction), and should be suitable for both graduate students and advanced undergraduates. The pedagogical approach is “physics first”: readers move very quickly to the calculation of observational predictions, and only return to the mathematical foundations after the physics is established. The book is mathematically correct—even nonspecialists need to know some differential geometry to be able to read papers—but informal. In addition to the “standard” topics covered by most introductory textbooks, it contains short introductions to more advanced topics: for instance, why field equations are second order, how to treat gravitational energy, what is required for a Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity. A concluding chapter discusses directions for further study, from mathematical relativity to experimental tests to quantum gravity.
