The main goal of this thesis is the development of a novel methodology to generate creative solutions at functional level for design tasks without binding solution spaces with designers&rsquo
individual experiences and prejudices. For this purpose, an evolutionary methodology for the conceptual design of engineering products has been proposed. This methodology performs evaluation, combination and modification of the existing solutions repetitively to generate new solution alternatives. Therefore, initially a representation scheme, which is generic enough to cover all alternatives in solution domain, has been defined. Following that, the evolutionary operations have been defined and two evaluation metrics have been proposed. Finally, the computer implementation of the developed theory has been performed. The test-runs of developed software resulted in creative alternatives for the design task. Consequently, the evolutionary design methodology presents a systematic design approach for less experienced or inexperienced designers and establishes a base for experienced designers to conceive many other solution alternatives beyond their experiences.

Current emission prediction models in the conceptual design phase are based on historical data and empirical correlations. Two main reasons contributing to the current state of emission models are complexity of the phenomena involved in the combustor and relatively low priority of having a more detailed emissions model at the conceptual design phase. However, global environmental concerns and aviation industry growth highlight the importance of improving the current emissions prediction approaches. There is a need to have an emission prediction model in the conceptual design phase to reduce the prediction uncertainties and perform parametric studies for different combustor types and operating conditions. The research objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology to have an initial estimate of gas turbines' emissions, capture their trends and bring more information forward to the conceptual design phase regarding the emission levels. This methodology is based on initial sizing of the combustor and determining its flow-fractions at each section using a 1D flow analysis. A network of elementary chemical reactors is considered and its elements are sized from the results of the 1D flow analysis to determine the level of emissions at the design and operating conditions. Additional phenomena that have significant effects on the prediction of emissions are also considered which are: 1) droplet evaporation and diffusion burning, and 2) fuel-air mixture non-uniformity. A simplified transient model is developed to determine the evaporation rate for a given droplet size distribution and to obtain the amount of vaporized fuel before they ignite. A probabilistic unmixedness model is also employed to consider the range of equivalence ratio distribution for the fraction of the fuel that is vaporized and mixed with air. An emission model is created for the single annular combustor (SAC) configuration and applied to two combustors to test the prediction and parametric capabilities of the model. Both uncertainty and sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the capability of the model to reduce the prediction uncertainty of the model compared to the simpler models without considering the droplet evaporation and mixture non-uniformity. The versatility of the model is tested by creating an emission model for a Rich-Quench-Lean (RQL) combustor, and the results are compared to limited actual data. In general, the approach shows a good performance predicting the NOx emission level compared to CO emission level and capturing their trends. Especially in the RQL combustor case, a more detailed model is required to improve the prediction of the CO emission level.

The ability to design is the distinguishing characteristic of an engineer. Recent research has increased our understanding of both the engineering design process and effective means for teaching that process to neophyte design engineers. In that spirit, a design methodology was developed at the Institute for Innovation and Design in Engineering (IIDE), Texas A&M University. At the core of this approach is a design philosophy based on the cognitive skills of Abstraction, Critical Parameter Identification, and Questioning. This philosophy along with the design process is taught in the senior undergraduate design and graduate design courses. The goal of the methodology is not only to teach the design process to novice designers but also to instill in them the design philosophy that would enable them to perform design effectively and innovatively in any area of specialty. In this dissertation the design philosophy along with its role in the design methodology is explained. The Need Analysis and the Conceptual Design stages of the IIDE methodology are elaborated. The weaknesses in these stages are identified and addressed, by developing and incorporating design methods and techniques that fit the spirit and framework of the IIDE design methodology. The Object Function Method was developed to address certain aspects at the Need Analysis stage. There was need for an effective concept searching method within the Concept Design stage of the IIDE design methodology. This is addressed by the development of new search techniques and methods for effective concept discovery during concept searching. The usage and application of these methods and techniques is explained in detail along with examples. Additionally, this dissertation contains the results of a study conducted with two groups of senior design students, those who have been through the process and those who have not, to evaluate the effectiveness of applying the IIDE design philosophy and performing the Need Analysis and Conceptual Design stages for the given design challenge. The goal of the study was to investigate the relationship, if any, between the degree to which these aspects of the design methodology were followed and the quality of the resulting design solutions produced.

The desire to create an environmentally friendly aircraft that is aerodynamically efficient and capable of conveying large number of passengers over long ranges at reduced direct operating cost led aircraft designers to develop the Blended Wing Body(BWB) aircraft concept. The BWB aircraft represents a paradigm shift in the design of aircraft. The design offers immense aerodynamics and environmental benefits and is suitable for the integration of advanced systems and concepts like laminar flow technology, jet flaps and distributed propulsion. However, despite these benefits, the BWB is yet to be developed for commercial air transport. This is due to several challenges resulting from the highly integrated nature of the configuration and the attendant disciplinary couplings. This study describes the development of a physics based, deterministic, multivariate design synthesis optimisation for the conceptual design and exploration of the design space of a BWB aircraft. The tool integrates a physics based Athena Vortex Lattice aerodynamic analysis tool with deterministic geometry sizing and mass breakdown models to permit a realistic conceptual design synthesis and enables the exploration of the design space of this novel class of aircraft. The developed tool was eventually applied to the conceptual design synthesis and sensitivity analysis of BWB aircraft to demonstrate its capability, flexibility and potential applications. The results obtained conforms to the pattern established from a Cranfield University study on the BlendedWing Body Aircraft and could thus be applied in conceptual design with a reasonable level of confidence in its accuracy.

A considerable amount of literature exists regarding design strategies and methodologies for large scale chemical engineering processes. However, the majority of the effort has focussed on petrochemical industries. Consequently, design strategies have been tailored to the specific requirements of these industries. Process design for food industries presents a number of unique challenges and problems, many of which cannot be addressed by existing petrochemical-based design methods. The principles of operation of most dairy processes are well known, but procedures for their design are not published in open literature. Large scale dairy design is often a mixture of heuristic and ad hoc methods, relying heavily on the experience of the designer. This thesis compares petrochemical and dairy processes, and considers points of similarity and difference. It was identified that petrochemical processes were typically centred around reactions, whilst dairy processes were mainly focused on separation and blending of selected components. For this reason, it was determined that petrochemical methodologies were not particularly relevant to the dairy process design. This study presents a new conceptual methodology for developing and assessing dairy process flow sheets. The methodology considers possibilities for integration of material, energy, water, time and the environment, between and within processes used in the dairy industry. It also considers opportunities and requirements for integration and provides the fundamental process understanding required when developing the new conceptual design methodology. The methodology is presented using four case studies covering small, medium and large scale processing operations. These case studies illustrate that the new methodology makes it possible to develop process designs in a more structured manner. More importantly, it enables integration opportunities for all process and product lines, particularly for medium and large-scale operations where a structured approach is required to systematically identify and assess integration possibilities. This thesis lays the foundation for dairy process design by introducing the evolution of conceptual process synthesis using a top-down framework to complement subsequent detailed design when required. This methodology represents a significant improvement over the current methods available for chemical process design in the dairy industry.

The research was conducted in the light of a training programme which will train a total of 150 engineers of AVIC I in Cranfield University during a period of 3 years. Cost has become an essential driver to aircraft design, as well as performances due to either the limited defence budget or competitive airline market. Consequently, knowing the possible cost prior to making actual expenditure will help managers to make proper decisions and allocate resources efficiently, and designers to optimize their work. Existing aircraft cost estimating models are outdated and mainly based on a database including both military and civil aircraft with various missions. This research concentrated on commercial jet aircraft and was to develop a suitable acquisition cost estimating methodology for conceptual design from a commercial aircraft manufacturer’s perspective. The literature reviewing took a comprehensive overview of some widely-applied cost estimating methods: Analogy, Parametric, Bottom-up, Feature-based costing, Activitybased costing (ABC), Expert judgement, and etc. Some practical cost models were also reviewed to learn the application of cost estimating in the aerospace industry. Then, analogy and parametric approaches were selected to perform the methodology development considering the limited data available at the conceptual design phase. An investigation was deployed to identify the actual problems in practice. The results helped to recognize the needs of industry. Also, the preparation works for development are presented to understand the environment. With subjective judgement and statistical techniques, a series of cost estimating relationships (CERs) were achieved, in which some historic explanatory parameters remained or were eliminated, and some new ones introduced. Size of aircraft became another variable besides weight. As to engines, all developed explanatory variables have been revealed in prior researches. The validation of CERs proves that they can provide reliable cost estimates with high accuracy and can be applied to conceptual design. In addition, a case study was conducted using a baseline aircraft defined in the group design project (GDP) and presents cost forecasting for the proposed aircraft. At last, discussion and conclusion presents an overview of the research. A framework for cost estimating system can be educed. Also, the future work is proposed for in-depth research.

A conceptual design optimization methodology was developed for a medium range box wing aircraft. A baseline conventional cantilever wing aircraft designed for the same mis- sion and payload was also optimized alongside a baseline box wing aircraft. An empirical formula for the mass estimation of the fore and aft wings of the box wing aircraft was derived by relating conventional cantilever wings to box wing aircraft wings. The results indicate that the fore and aft wings would use the same correction coe cient and that the aft wing would be lighter than the fore wing on the medium range box wing aircraft because of reduced sweep. As part of the methodology, a computational study was performed to analyze di erent wing/tip n xities using a statically loaded idealized box wing con guration. The analy- ses determined the best joint xity by comparing the stress distributions in nite element torsion box models in addition to aerodynamic requirements. The analyses indicates that the rigid joint is the most suitable. Studies were also performed to investigate the structural implications of changing only the tip n inclinations on the box wing aircraft. Tip n inclination refers to the angle the tip n makes to the vertical body axis of the aircraft. No signi cant variations in wing structural design drivers as a function of tip n inclination were observed. Stochastic and deterministic optimization routines were performed on the baseline box wing aircraft using the methodology developed where the variables were wing area, av- erage thickness to chord ratio and sweep angle. The conventional aircraft design showed similar performance and characteristics to the equivalent in-service aircraft thereby pro- viding some validation to the methodology and the results for the box wing aircraft. Longitudinal stability investigations showed that the extra fuel capacity of the box wing in the ns could be used to reduce trim drag. The short period oscillation of the conventional cantilever wing aircraft was found to be satisfactory but the box wing aircraft was found to be unacceptable hence requiring stability augmentation systems. The eld and ight performance of the box wing showed to be better than the conventional cantilever wing aircraft. Overall, the economic advantages of the box wing aircraft over the conventional cantilever wing aircraft improve with increase in fuel price making the box wing a worthy replacement for the conventional cantilever wing aircraft.

Distributed intelligence systems are starting to gain dominance in the field of large-scale complex systems. These systems are characterized by nonlinear behavior patterns that are only predicted through simulation-based engineering. In addition, the autonomy, intelligence, and reconfiguration capabilities required by certain systems introduce obstacles adding another layer of complexity. However, there exists no standard process for the design of such systems. This research presents a design methodology focusing on distributed control architectures while concurrently considering the systems design process. The methodology has two major components. First, it introduces a hybrid design process, based on the infusion of the control architecture and conceptual system design processes. The second component is the development of control architectures metamodel, placing a distinction between control configuration and control methods. This enables a standard representation of a wide spectrum of control architectures frameworks.

Pervasiveness can be recognized in game playing every time the boundaries of playing expand from the virtual (or fictional) world to the real world. Sensor technologies, mobile devices, networking capabilities, and the internet make pervasive games possible. In the present work, we consider pervasive mobile games as context-aware games that necessarily use mobile devices. Also we consider that smartphones are the main driver to fulfill the promises of pervasive game playing. As far as we are aware, this is the first general work on pervasive mobile game design. This thesis proposes a methodology to support the conceptual design stage of pervasive mobile games. The main contributions of this research work are twofold: (1) A novel list of prominent features of pervasive games, identified from game projects and the literature, and checklists for each feature. This feature list (and corresponding checklists) can be used to spark novel game ideas, and to help in discovering functional and non-functional requirements for pervasive mobile games. (2) A domain specific language to help in specifying activities in pervasive mobile games that use mobile devices, sensors, and actuators as the main interface elements. With the proposed methodology, designers can discuss, identify, verify, and apply important features of pervasive mobile games. Also, due to the lightweight nature of the methodology, designers can easily catch the big picture of the games by keeping focused on the intents of the game activities, and not getting lost in the source code.

The basic concept of this work is that functional modelling techniques are applicable to and of practical use in, producing a qualitative model of conceptual engineering design. A qualitative function based model of conceptual design has been developed and a computer based implementation has been built and tested. The rationale behind the modelling scheme and the computer implementation are described in detail. In addition to a review of existing models of design the research provides a significant new capability in four main areas: • An ability to generate new concepts with a controlled degree of similarity to existing designs. • A new function based model of engineering conceptual design. • The COncept Design ASsistant (CODAS) system, a computer based implementation of the function based model, has been developed and tested. • A new symbolic representation language. CODAS is a hybrid case-based and function-based modelling system, implemented in the domain of mechanical device design, which demonstrates the practical application of this new model. The CODAS system aims to provide a design support tool which can invent both routine and novel devices based on experience gained from past successful design solutions. Fast and efficient data handling is achieved by utilizing Case Based Reasoning (CBR) technology to store and retrieve past design solutions which are defined in terms of a symbolic representation language. The underlying design model is function based and employs a technique of divergent function to form mapping to produce physical embodiments of the proposed functional solutions.

Industries want to add value to their offerings but to do this, rather than just accepting customer requirements, they now need to know how their products and/or services have been embedded within their customer’s process to achieve a goal that the customer has; any gaps within the process then present an opportunity for the provider to fill these gaps. The System-In-Use (SIU) Methodology presented in this thesis facilitates customer issues in “pulling” the supply chain into creating new solutions as well as the supply chain “pushing” new value propositions into improving customer processes. It does this by drawing on a detailed theory of value and capability which was developed as part of this research. The method has been applied in five industries in processes encompassing high value-assets with very positive outcomes for each of the stakeholders involved: notably, three solutions have been adopted in industry for which a KT-Box award was granted by Cambridge University. This work presents the studies to associated solar aircraft project. Characteristics of existing solar aircraft, their history and developments and associated technical challenges, as well as their limitations and potential use fields have been surveyed. Development related to solar aircraft and low-speed aircraft have been researched and existing aircraft has been investigated, in order to allow an understanding of these aircraft in a comparative and evolutionary perspective. Studies of low-speed aircraft have been performed, in order to check and validate these tools. Examples of new sun-powered designs are also presented. It was possible to observe some semblance of the solar aircraft, in terms of wing loading, with pioneering aviation aircraft from about the years 1890 to 1910. For purposes of analyzing the already-flown solar aircraft, and designing new solar aircraft, the initial study focused in identifying and understanding the differences from these aircraft to conventional aircraft. Several dedicated tools have been developed to, at first, analyze the existing aircraft, and after that, to support the new aircraft designs. Procedures and methods devoted to the estimation of drag, thrust and performance of low-speed, propeller-driven aircraft have been developed. And air vehicles - solar or not - with known performance characteristics have been considered to validate these processes. From this, specific methods for the analysis of solar propulsion processes were developed: Definition of solar irradiation model; definition of propulsive chain, from solar cells to the propeller, and with or without use of batteries. Other methodologies specific to solar aircraft were investigated and defined: a general formulation for obtaining the maximum feasible wing loading for a solar aircraft; aerodynamic characteristics of Reynolds numbers below 150,000; and metrics for estimating the mass of a solar aircraft. With this group of tools, it has been possible to develop two complementary methods for defining a configuration of the solar aircraft from the mission requirements: the Solar Aircraft Design and the Mission Analysis Method. The second one is only required on missions involving large variations in altitude. With the tools developed three concepts of solar aircraft are calculated and presented each one for a specific use. In summary, through this work a general scenario on solar aircraft is developed, aiming the project of solar aircraft; and several perspectives and possibilities for continuation or next steps are pointed out.

One of the most important decisions in the product development process is the selection of a promising design concept because of the large influence it has on the final product. A thorough search for the best design is a significant challenge to designers, who are trying to balance the objective and subjective performance of the designs they create. In this thesis, a computationally-assisted design methodology is developed and used in the early stages of design to more thoroughly search for designs that perform well according to objective physics-based models and subjective designer-specific preference-based models. The method presented herein uses an initial pool of user-created designs that is parameterized and used in a numerical search that recombines design features to form new designs in a semi-automated way. Designs are then evaluated quantitatively by objective performance calculations and evaluated qualitatively by human designers. Designer preference is interactively gathered when visual representations of new computer-created designs are presented to the designer for subjective evaluation. A mathematical model is then formed using statistical probability methods to approximate the designer's preference and incrementally updated after the designer subjectively evaluates a new set of designs at each iteration of the automated search process. The methodology uses a multiobjective approach to search for optimally performing designs, treating both the physics-based models and the preference-based models as objectives. The methodology couples the speed of computational searches with the ability of human designers to subjectively evaluate unmodeled objectives. The method is demonstrated with two product examples to find optimal designs that designers may not have otherwise discovered among the vast number of possible combinations of features. The proposed methodology brings the ability to search for and find numerous, optimal solutions across a wide solution space, in an efficient and human-centered way, and does so in the early stages of design.

The research examines how the Bi-Level Integrated System Synthesis decomposition technique can be adapted to perform as the conceptual aeroelastic design tool. The study describes a comprehensive solution of the aeroelastic coupled problem cast in this decomposition format and implementation in an integrated framework. The method is supported by application details of a proof-of-concept high speed vehicle. Physics-based codes such as finite element and an aerodynamic panel method are used to model the high-definition geometric characteristics of the vehicle. A synthesis and sizing code was added to referee the conflicts that arise between the two disciplines. This research's novelty lies in four points. First is the use of physics-based tools at the conceptual design phase to calculate the aeroelastic properties. Second is the projection of flutter and divergence velocity constraint lines in a power loading versus wing loading graph. The mapping of such constraints in a designer's familiar format is a valuable tool for fast examination of the design space. Third is the improvement of the aeroelastic assessment given the time allotted. Until recently, because of extensive computational and time requirements, aeroelasticity was only assessed at the preliminary design phase. This research illustrates a scheme whereby, for the first time, aeroelasticity can be assessed at the early design formulation stages. Forth, this assessment allowed to verify the impact of changing velocity, altitude, and angle of attack and identify robust design space with these three mission properties. The method's application to the quiet supersonic business jet gave a delta shaped wing for the supersonic speed regime. A subsonic case resulted in a high aspect ratio wing. The scaling approach allowed iso-flutter and iso-divergence lines to be plotted. The main effects of velocity, altitude, and angle of attack on these iso-lines were also discussed, as was the identification of robust design space. The response surface surrogate models allowed convergence of the system optimization but questions were posed as to the accuracy of these quadratic models. Other future improvements include the addition of more disciplines and more detailed models.

A multiobjective, multidisciplinary design optimization methodology for mathematically modeling the distributed satellite system (DSS) conceptual design problem as an optimization problem has been developed to advance the state-of-the-art in complex distributed satellite network design. An increasing number of space missions are utilizing DSS architectures in which multiple satellites work in a coordinated fashion to improve system performance, cost, and survivability. The trade space for distributed satellite systems can be enormous - too large to enumerate, analyze, and compare all possible architectures. The seven-step methodology enables an efficient search of the trade space for the best families of architectures, and explores architectures that might not otherwise be considered during the conceptual design phase, the phase of a DSS program in which the majority of lifecycle cost gets locked in. Four classes of multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) techniques are investigated - Taguchi, heuristic, gradient, and univariate methods. The heuristic simulated annealing (SA) algorithm found the best DSS architectures with the greatest consistency due to its ability to escape local optima within a nonconvex trade space. Accordingly, this SA algorithm forms the core single objective MDO algorithm in the methodology. The DSS conceptual design problem scope is then broadened by expanding from single objective to multiobjective optimization problems, and two variant multiobjective SA algorithms are developed.
(cont.) The utility in knowing the global Pareto boundary of a DSS trade space is presented, and several methods are explored for approximating the true global Pareto boundary with only a limited knowledge of the full DSS trade space. Finally, methods for improving the performance of the SA algorithm are tested, and it was found that the 2-DOF variant of the SA algorithm is most effective at both single objective and multiobjective searches of a DSS trade space. The versatility of the methodology is demonstrated through its application to the conceptual design of three separate distributed satellite systems - the civil NASA Origins Terrestrial Planet Finder mission, the military TechSat 21 GMTI space-based radar mission, and the commercial broadband satellite communications mission. In each case, the methodology identifies more cost-effective system architectures than those previously considered for the single objective optimization problem, and a Pareto optimal set of architectures for the multiobjective optimization problem. In this manner, the methodology serves as a powerful, versatile systems engineering tool for the conceptual design of distributed satellite systems.

This thesis develops a learning framework for automation of acquisition of bridge conceptual design knowledge. The thesis proposes a new learning methodology explicitly aimed at capturing quality design aspects to help engineer gain insight into good design. The research uses the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) data, which contains more than 600,000 bridges. The physical condition ratings are used as proxies for design quality. In this data the relationships between physical condition ratings and bridge design elements are not well-known. The simultaneous equation model (SEM) technique is employed to model the physical condition ratings. SEM has the advantage over existing methods of state transition probability estimation in that no a-priori subjective conditional grouping is required. The resulting model yields the marginal effects of design variables on condition ratings, which is easy for engineers to interpret. The analysis results reveal that design features available in the NBI database alone do not adequately explain the resulting condition ratings. Using the identified performance model, COBWEB, an incremental clustering algorithm, is employed to learn mappings from design specification to configuration space. However, the COBWEB branching strategy focuses on probabilistic predictability of feature values. The learned knowledge therefore represents not clusters of good design aspects but rather clusters of local similarity. A modification to the existing strategy is proposed. A set of experiments has been conducted to compare the original and the modified COBWEB. Finally, the thesis provides a detailed discussion of issues related to the quality of the NBI database and proposes strategies for improved analysis of the NBI bridge data.

The study is concerned with the conceptual structure and content of the framework for characterising user-product interaction, proposed under the title – ‘Product Semantics’. The sources for the critique of design, from which the framework is derived, are identified and analysed, and the substantive theoretical and methodological content given initial consideration in terms of the deployment of the central concept of ‘meaning’, and the principal theoretical approaches adopted in the analysis of meaning and semantic concepts generally. The commitment to a cognitive and experiential approach to user-interaction is established and the concepts central to the framework, and requiring more detailed analysis, are identified. The core of the study consists in an analysis of the sequence of concepts and contexts that are chiefly used in the theoretical articulation of the framework, including - function, affordance, categorisation, artefacts, meaning and expression - of which the concept of affordance is central to the structure. On the basis of the initial consideration of the structure and content of the scheme, and in the light of the analysis of concepts, the explanatory structure of the framework is established. It is argued that the core commitment to an experiential and cognitive account, and the form of the explanatory structure, are jointly incompatible with the conceptual content of the framework, particularly in respect of the pivotal role of the concept of affordance. Proposals are advanced for an alternative interpretation which addresses the central issues of consistency and coherence, and which suggests an alternative approach to the conceptual characterisation of the framework and the form of the explanatory hierarchy. The implications of the framework, and the proposed alternative interpretation, are considered in respect of their application in shaping approaches to the development of design theory and methodology, and the experiential aspect of semantics and cognition.

The current design paradigm for developing tube-and-wing style aircraft has been well documented in literature. This research attempts to develop and val-idate a similar design methodology to what is presently utilized for tube-and-wing based aircraft, but has so far not been successfully implemented for the blended wing-body. This construction has no clear distinction between the lift generating surfaces and the cargo carrying structure. The methodology that was developed included the concatenation and validation of low-fidelity, low speed and low complexity aerodynamic models in order to allow for quick and simple analysis of a large number of possible geometries. This enables the user eÿciently determine the most promising candidate geometries for further study and/or development. Known issues with the low velocity and low com-plexity aerodynamic models include the absence of shock wave modelling, an important part in determining the aerodynamic performance of a lift generat-ing surface. The result of this work is the creation and documentation of a procedure for early-stage design of a blended wing-body airframe. However, due to convergence issues with the high-fidelity CFD solver, the methodology could not been validated for transonic flow. It can thus be only considered valid for flow velocities for which the Prandtl-Glauert correction is valid.

Conceptual modeling is considered to be essential in simulation development activities. However, there are only a few research studies on how to develop conceptual models. One of the important and comprehensive approaches is the methodology developed under the leadership of METU Modeling and Simulation Center (MODSIMMER) for Turkish Armed Forces. The project suggests a methodology to develop mission space conceptual models (GUKAM), and provides a Conceptual Model Development Tool for C4ISR M&
S activities, which is named as KAMA-C4ISRMOS. KAMA methodology is developed to utilize conceptual models in requirements collection and analysis activities. Two improvement opportunities observed in KAMA approach are that, there are no methodologies defined to develop simulation space conceptual models
and although most approaches emphasize the importance of conceptual model to be used in design activities, no explanations are provided on how to do it. This thesis aims to suggest an extended KAMA methodology that, besides original KAMA properties, provides a method to develop simulation space conceptual model, and provides a guide to use conceptual model to develop design. To evaluate the suggested methodology, a case study is conducted on a synthetic environment project. In this way, implementation of the methodology on another simulation domain is depicted. Developed mission space and simulation space conceptual models and design artifacts are evaluated, and the effects of conceptual models on simulation development life cycle are discussed.

A conceptual design methodology was produced and subsequently coded into a Visual C++ (GUI) environment to facilitate the rapid comparison of several possible configurations to satisfy High Altitude Long Endurance (FIALE) unmanned aircraft (UAV) missions in the Low Speed (propeller driven aircraft) regime. Several comparative studies were performed to verify the applicability of traditional design methods. The traditional computational design methodologies fail in several areas such as high aspect ratio wing weight estimation and design, low Reynolds number wing design, high altitude engine performance, low Reynolds number drag estimation, unmanned aircraft design, and the conceptual design of unconventional configurations. The methodology developed for this thesis was robust enough to allow not only for consideration of these areas of inadequacy in traditional methods, but also to allow for the inclusion of advancements in the relevant technologies as they become more widely available. The following configurations were evaluated for suitability to the Low Speed HALE UAV application: conventional, canard, twin boom, multiple fuselage (conventional or canard), tandem wing, multiple fuselage tandem wing or flying wing configuration. The configurations were compared on the basis of aircraft endurance for takeoff weights ranging from 2,000 to 20,000 pounds and wing loadings ranging from 5 to 25 lbs1fe. Initial drag estimates were made using traditional parabolic drag estimation techniques. A more refined drag buildup was performed using a vortex lattice drag estimation for the lift induced drag (for all lifting components) and calculated skin friction coefficients for the parasite drag. Statistically based methods were used for other components of drag having much smaller contributions. In addition, a statistical approach was taken to the weight estimation of the major aircraft components. However, this approach made comparison of alternative configurations more difficult. Thus wing bending moments trends were evaluated and utilized in the development of weight saving values for multiple fuselage wing weight estimation. The comparative performance of each configuration is justified with direct reference to the terms in the Breguet Endurance equation. Validation was performed where possible on all modules and segments associated with the methodology, as well as for the macroscopic results. In addition, parametric studies on endurance were performed for the conventional configuration for geometric characteristics and operating conditions directly and indirectly effecting the calculated endurance and generalized results presented. Finally, a case study was performed to demonstrate this capability. A new relation was developed for aircraft empty weight prediction, a low speed airfoil figure of merit was proposed, and new constants were offered for UAV fuselage length prediction. In addition, horizontal and vertical tail volume coefficients were proposed for all of the Low Speed HALE UAV configurations considered. It was determined that the multiple fuselage configurations showed comparatively superior endurance performance across a range of takeoff weights, with several other configurations demonstrating marginal endurance improvements. Finally, a highly flexible and robust computer based conceptual design methodology was developed and validated enabling the quick comparison of a greater number of possible configurations to satisfy a given mission for Low Speed HALE UAV's and providing detailed drag and weight breakdown data.

One of the most promising powered-lift concepts is Upper Surface Blowing (USB), where the engines are placed above the wing and the engine exhaust jet becomes attached to the upper surface. The jet thrust can then be vectored by use of the trailing edge curvature since the jet flow tends to remain attached by the "Coanda Effect". Wind tunnel and flight-testing have shown USB aircraft to be capable of producing maximum lift coefficients near 10. They have the additional benefit of shielding the engine noise above the wing and away from the ground. Given the potential gains from USB aircraft, one would expect that conceptual design methods exist for their development. This is not the case however. While relatively complex solutions are available, there is currently no adequate low-fidelity methodology for the conceptual and preliminary design of USB or USB/distributed propulsion aircraft. The focus of the current work is to provide such a methodology for conceptual design of USB aircraft. Based on limited experimental data, the new methodology is shown to compare well with wind tunnel data. In this thesis we have described the new approach, correlated it with available 2-D data, and presented comparisons of our predictions with published USB data and an existing non-linear vortex lattice method. The current approach has been shown to produce good results over a broad range of propulsion system parameters, wing geometries, and flap deflections. In addition, the semi-analytical nature of the methodology will lend itself well to aircraft design programs/optimizers such as ACSYNT. These factors make the current method a useful tool for the design of USB and USB/distributed propulsion aircraft.

The primary research objective was to develop a methodology to support conceptual design of the Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) configuration. The absence of a horizontal tail imposes new stability and control requirements on the planform, and therefore requiring greater emphasis on control authority assessment than is typical for conceptual design. This required investigations into three primary areas of research. The first was to develop a method for designing an appropriate amount of redundancy. This was motivated widely varying numbers of trailing edge elevons in the HWB literature, and inadequate explanations for these early design decisions. The method identifies stakeholders, metrics of interest, and synthesizes these metrics using the Breguet range equation for system level comparison of control surface layouts. The second area of research was the development trim analysis methods that could accommodate redundant control surfaces, for which conventional methods performed poorly. A new measure of control authority was developed for vehicles with redundant controls. This is accomplished using concepts from the control allocation literature such as the attainable moment subset and the direct allocation method. The result is a continuous measure of remaining control authority suitable for use during HWB sizing and optimization. The final research area integrated performance and control authority to create a HWB sizing environment, and investigations into how to use it for design space exploration and vehicle optimization complete the methodology. The Monte Carlo Simulation method is used to map the design space, identify good designs for optimization, and to develop design heuristics. Finally, HWB optimization experiments were performed to discover best practices for conceptual design.

The systematic creation of product designs that meet specification and are fit-forpurpose has resulted from intensive research investigation undertaken by Western European engineering design theorists, who define design science as four fundamental elements: Technical systems versus design processes and descriptive versus prescriptive statements. It is argued, through a comparison of the parallel emergent design process methodologies of Western European and Eastern Japanese industry, that a fifth element has evolved which should be included within the boundaries of design science - Quality. . The measure of how well new or variant product designs meet customer requirements is critical to the success of a product in a marketplace for which it is intended to compete. As the level of meeting or exceeding customer requirements defines the perceived quality of a design to the customer, it is paramount that design-quality is optimised to ensure maximum customer satisfaction. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a dominant, established methodology which translates customer requirements into engineering characteristics. Although the approach is attributed to many well known successes, it also possesses some widely known limitations (subjective in nature; difficult to systematically compare concept design variants; difficult to consider complex design inter-relationships and design' conflicts; complexity of analysis increases proportionally with the size of the matrix; interpretation of matrix information requires high level of experience). Furthermore, although the richness of design information held within a QFD matrix provides a detailed record of design status, this information is' essentially static. To address these limitations, a design hypothesis is presented in which a metric-based theory of coupleddynamic- mapping of information held within the QFD design matrix provides a more sophisticated method of quality-by-design analysis. The hypothesis is tested through the creation of a novel hybrid design methodology- termed CODA (Customer Optimised Design Analysis). CODA methodology simultaneously provides an objective function of overall design merit that denotes optimal design attribute values that represents best design trade-off and optimal customer satisfaction (design quality). Finally, it is' deliberated how CODA is not meant to displace QFD, but to provide the design fraternity with a more sophisticated tool to resolve design conflict and aid decisionmaking within the conceptual design phase.

This dissertation evaluates and elevates the perception of the strategic use of design for airlines, especially a Silent Design airline like Saudia Airlines. Saudia Airlines is an international airline located in the Gulf region in the Middle East. In comparison to some other Gulf state airlines, Saudia Airlines benefits from its large geographical coverage, and is considered to be one of the richest and longest established carriers in the industry. However, the rapid growth during the past few years of other Gulf carriers (e.g. Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways) highlights the necessity for improvements to be made by Saudia Airlines so that it can sustain its position in the global market. These three mega Gulf airlines have shown major developments in their strategic use of design in delivering innovative and differentiated design touch points in their customer journeys. The purpose of this research is to ‘create a design management conceptual framework (DMCF) to assist Saudia Airlines in evaluating and elevating the perception of the strategic value of design.’ To date, airlines adopting a Silent Design approach have rarely been addressed in empirical studies. To achieve this, secondary research investigated several topics, mainly the perception of the strategic use of design, the operational use of design and how design was managed based on design management evolution. Furthermore, design outcomes are presented after implementing the strategic use of design, to deliver innovative and differentiated results. Moreover, the case studies of several companies are presented that use design at a strategic level, especially in the airline industry. The primary research investigated key stakeholders’ views (customers, design experts and Saudia Airlines’ employees and design consultants). The findings from these investigations, and emergent key themes and sub-themes created the prototypes that led to the formulation of the DMCF, which is the main contribution of this study. The DMCF was developed and tested with experts in the field. The proposed framework is considered a significant starting point for airlines that want to evaluate and elevate their perception of the strategic use of design. The DMCF addresses the significant results of this study and key points are made, as follows: 1) Four key dimensions are identified: a) organisational mind-set, b) structure and design capabilities, c) design process and communication, and d) customer experience, which could evaluate and elevate the strategic use of design. 2) The Silent Design culture is identified as pertaining to Saudia Airlines in this study. This culture emphasises the moderate ambition of the strategic use of design by using it at an operational level. It also includes an ill-defined structure for managing design and a lack of design capabilities. In addition, it has an unclear design process and ad hoc cross-departmental collaboration. The overall result is that the Silent Design organisations’ customer experiences are characterised by undifferentiated products and services. 3) The Strategic Design culture is identified and addresses the airlines that make good use of design. This culture emphasises the strong ambition of the strategic use of design by using it at a strategic level. It also includes a systematic and clear structure for managing design. It has a clear design process and clear cross-departmental collaboration. The overall result is that Strategic Design organisations maintain their position as innovators and differentiators within the airline industry. 4) Some recommendations are made that target how to bridge the gap between these two cultures, including appointing a design leader within a Silent Design culture airline. This would elevate the airlines’ perceptions of the strategic use of design.

The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities. The thesis forms a basis for additional discussions of PLM tool integration across the engineering, manufacturing, MRO and EOL lifecycle phases to support business management processes.

Designers often look for inspiration in their environment when exploring possible solutions to a given problem. However, many studies have reported that external stimuli may constrain designers’ imagination and limit their exploration to similar solutions, a phenomenon described as design fixation. Inspiration and fixation effects are traditionally studied with a similar experimental paradigm, which has produced a complex web of findings and explanations. Yet, when analysing the experiments and their findings closely, it becomes clear that there is considerable variation in how studies are conducted and the results they produce. Such variation makes it difficult to formulate a general view of how external stimuli affect the design process, and to translate the research findings into education and practice. Moreover, it raises questions about the reliability and effectiveness of the traditional experimental method. This thesis reports on a collection of studies that examine how design inspiration and fixation research is done and how it can be improved. It explores the research area by reviewing the literature and analysing data from a workshop; describes the research method by scrutinising experiments and their procedures; and explains the variation in research findings by testing experimental procedures empirically and suggesting new interpretations. My main findings are that: abstract stimuli can inspire or fixate designers to different degrees depending on how explicitly the stimuli are represented; external stimuli can inhibit the exploration of ideas that would otherwise be explored; the effect of experimental instructions varies depending on how encouraging the instructions are; and the way participants represent and elaborate ideas can moderate fixation results. Whilst this thesis offers insights into design practice and education, its main contribution is to design research, where it represents a fundamental material for those who are new to inspiration and fixation research, and for those who are already expert.

This research develops a rationale for using provocative conceptual designs to foster the innovation of human-centred product ideas -a `critical artefact methodology'. This research employed similar tactics to Action Research (Swann 2002): cycles of action (using critical artefact methods in design projects) and reflection on that action (including a contextual review of existing theories and practices), which produced action (product ideas) as well as research (a proposed critical artefact methodology). In two projects, I used sets of workshops where stakeholders' engaged with my critical artefacts to develop my understanding of their needs. Living Rooms (designing the home for `tomorrow's older people) suggested how my methods might be improved then taken account of in Digital Mementos (designing novel mementos for increasingly digital lifestyles), including selecting productive participants - stakeholders in-tune with the possibilities of novel situations, such as von Hippel's "lead users" (1986). Within participatory design and co-design I position critical artefact methods as using stakeholder participation to inform design activity rather than as co-creation. In reference to Ehn and Kyng's mock-ups (1991) and Gaver's cultural probes (1999) exemplars, I show that critical artefacts do not fit the description of `prototypes' (suggestive of design direction or destination) and that my critical artefact methodology depends upon a progression from presenting stakeholders with critical artefacts (that provoke critical reflection) towards more `prototypical' artefacts expressing relevant needs (for evaluation). I suggest that critical design (Dunne 1999) and related design practices have similar characteristics and operation to Critical Theory: a view that the status quo (generally affirmed by design) somehow `oppresses' society; that `enlightenment' of the factors underlying this `emancipates' society and is facilitated by a reading of critiques (alternative proposals such as critical artefacts). In my critical artefact methodology the designer develops their understanding by designing artefacts to `process' stakeholders' engagement with previous artefacts -I use Polanyi's notion of "indwelling" (1966) to support this method of empathic knowledge sharing. Designer's and stakeholders' co-reading of critical artefacts means that this understanding can be of future or latent stakeholders needs; it enables them to explore alternative needs, wants/desires, practices and products by broadening their understanding of what is possible. The contributions of this research are a critical artefact methodology supported by critical artefact methods; a more instrumental use of critical artefacts than other critical design practices; and (in Digital Mementos' outputs) exemplar findings demonstrating the value of a critical artefact methodology's application. Whilst this thesis presents a `point in time' in my methodology's development, I intend that it provide designers with insights into similar techniques within their own professional practice.

Decision support systems are interactive, computer-based information systems that provide data and analysis tools in order to better assist managers on different levels of organization in the process of decision making. Data warehouses (DWs) have been developed and deployed as an integral part of decision support systems.

A data warehouse is a database that allows to store high volume of historical data required for analytical purposes. This data is extracted from operational databases, transformed into a coherent whole, and loaded into a DW during the extraction-transformation-loading (ETL) process.

DW data can be dynamically manipulated using on-line analytical processing (OLAP) systems. DW and OLAP systems rely on a multidimensional model that includes measures, dimensions, and hierarchies. Measures are usually numeric additive values that are used for quantitative evaluation of different aspects about organization. Dimensions provide different analysis perspectives while hierarchies allow to analyze measures on different levels of detail.

Nevertheless, currently, designers as well as users find difficult to specify multidimensional elements required for analysis. One reason for that is the lack of conceptual models for DW and OLAP system design, which would allow to express data requirements on an abstract level without considering implementation details. Another problem is that many kinds of complex hierarchies arising in real-world situations are not addressed by current DW and OLAP systems.

In order to help designers to build conceptual models for decision-support systems and to help users in better understanding the data to be analyzed, in this thesis we propose the MultiDimER model - a conceptual model used for representing multidimensional data for DW and OLAP applications. Our model is mainly based on the existing ER constructs, for example, entity types, attributes, relationship types with their usual semantics, allowing to represent the common concepts of dimensions, hierarchies, and measures. It also includes a conceptual classification of different kinds of hierarchies existing in real-world situations and proposes graphical notations for them.

On the other hand, currently users of DW and OLAP systems demand also the inclusion of spatial data, visualization of which allows to reveal patterns that are difficult to discover otherwise. The advantage of using spatial data in the analysis process is widely recognized since it allows to reveal patterns that are difficult to discover otherwise.

However, although DWs typically include a spatial or a location dimension, this dimension is usually represented in an alphanumeric format. Furthermore, there is still a lack of a systematic study that analyze the inclusion as well as the management of hierarchies and measures that are represented using spatial data.

With the aim of satisfying the growing requirements of decision-making users, we extend the MultiDimER model by allowing to include spatial data in the different elements composing the multidimensional model. The novelty of our contribution lays in the fact that a multidimensional model is seldom used for representing spatial data. To succeed with our proposal, we applied the research achievements in the field of spatial databases to the specific features of a multidimensional model. The spatial extension of a multidimensional model raises several issues, to which we refer in this thesis, such as the influence of different topological relationships between spatial objects forming a hierarchy on the procedures required for measure aggregations, aggregations of spatial measures, the inclusion of spatial measures without the presence of spatial dimensions, among others.

Moreover, one of the important characteristics of multidimensional models is the presence of a time dimension for keeping track of changes in measures. However, this dimension cannot be used to model changes in other dimensions.

Therefore, usual multidimensional models are not symmetric in the way of representing changes for measures and dimensions. Further, there is still a lack of analysis indicating which concepts already developed for providing temporal support in conventional databases can be applied and be useful for different elements composing a multidimensional model.

In order to handle in a similar manner temporal changes to all elements of a multidimensional model, we introduce a temporal extension for the MultiDimER model. This extension is based on the research in the area of temporal databases, which have been successfully used for modeling time-varying information for several decades. We propose the inclusion of different temporal types, such as valid and transaction time, which are obtained from source systems, in addition to the DW loading time generated in DWs. We use this temporal support for a conceptual representation of time-varying dimensions, hierarchies, and measures. We also refer to specific constraints that should be imposed on time-varying hierarchies and to the problem of handling multiple time granularities between source systems and DWs.

Furthermore, the design of DWs is not an easy task. It requires to consider all phases from the requirements specification to the final implementation including the ETL process. It should also take into account that the inclusion of different data items in a DW depends on both, users' needs and data availability in source systems. However, currently, designers must rely on their experience due to the lack of a methodological framework that considers above-mentioned aspects.

In order to assist developers during the DW design process, we propose a methodology for the design of conventional, spatial, and temporal DWs. We refer to different phases, such as requirements specification, conceptual, logical, and physical modeling. We include three different methods for requirements specification depending on whether users, operational data sources, or both are the driving force in the process of requirement gathering. We show how each method leads to the creation of a conceptual multidimensional model. We also present logical and physical design phases that refer to DW structures and the ETL process.

To ensure the correctness of the proposed conceptual models, i.e. with conventional data, with the spatial data, and with time-varying data, we formally define them providing their syntax and semantics. With the aim of assessing the usability of our conceptual model including representation of different kinds of hierarchies as well as spatial and temporal support, we present real-world examples. Pursuing the goal that the proposed conceptual solutions can be implemented, we include their logical representations using relational and object-relational databases.

Design thinking is a human-centered approach to develop innovation solutions and improve quality and convenience of life. Using this innovating approach, designers think about people fi rst, understand potential needs of people through observation on the spot and realize problems, then develop new products, services and concepts which meet people’s needs during brainstorming and prototyping. In this research, I have developed a series of conceptual design by design thinking methodology, and assessed future development of the works by three criteria. The research result shows that the works meet more needs when compared to original design.

A systematic and efficient methodology for conceptual design of mechanisms is developed based on the classification of design specifications. In this work, design specifications for a mechanism are recast into three more coherent categories: functional requirements, structural requirements and design constraints. Based on functional requirements, the functioning kinematic chain of the mechanism is constructed by the functioning links such as the ground, input and output links, etc. According to structural requirements, kinematic structures are searched from the existing atlas of kinematic structures. Then, the functioning kinematic chain is compared with segments of the kinematic structures searched to obtain a much smaller number of compatible kinematic structures, where development of conceptual design of mechanisms can be efficiently accomplished. Lastly, joints of the compatible kinematic structures are labeled subject to design constraints, such that feasible mechanisms are yielded. With this methodology, design specifications with different natures can be used to guide a designer through various stages of the conceptual design process in a systematic manner. The creation of the variable-stroke engine mechanism is used as an illustrative example. Two design examples, the creation of the latch and retainer mechanisms for wafer containers are presented to demonstrate the proposed methodology. It is believed that the proposed methodology and design examples are beneficial to the conceptual design of mechanisms.

Designing for the concept of an air hub requires the provisions for adequate expansion and flexibility to accommodate a much lager level, more transfer, and different kind of demand. This study aims at building the framework of air hub conceptual design methodology that is corresponding with the characteristics of hub operations. The systematic methodology generates the concept alternatives of master plan more efficiently. In practices, experience of engineers, in-depth system analysis, expert knowledge, and case-based reasoning are essential in alternatives generation process. A design database system based on previous design experience is constructed as a basis of reasoning by analogy. Case study of CKS master plan update and the Southern International Airport project, including comparative analysis of outputs from the consustants and this study, is performed to arrive at a general and practical design methodology. The results show that the inverted-T pier is recommended.

In this age of advanced information technology, many businesses are contemplating the question of how to utilize information systems to enhance their competitive capacity. Most companies do not have sufficient time or human resources to develop information systems on their own and thus outsource this task to software vendors. However, providing the vendor with a complete plan for the proposed information system often poses difficulty for staff, particularly if they lack previous experience using such systems. As service providers, software vendors must meet the needs of their clients, create customer value, and enhance competitive capacity. However, when commencing a project, the vendor not only faces a limited timeframe for completion but often finds customers uncertain and ambiguous concerning their plans and requirements for the information system. All too often, it is only after both parties have invested a great deal of time and resources in the project that they realize that the initial plans do not meet the practical needs of the business. As a result, the results that were originally expected cannot be achieved. This study drew on the perspective of Robert, a pre-sales consultant working for a software supplier. We explored the difficulties encountered in the pre-sales stage of system evaluation and attempted to identify feasible solutions from previous successful experiences. The aim of this study was to explore how, within a short duration, software system vendors can quickly integrate themselves into the customer environment, explore customer needs, identify core problems, and propose suitable plans for information system. We try to find some way to review information systems plans to ensure that customer’s different level needs about strategy, management and operation are met. In teaching notes, we applied the concept of IT Artifacts to analysis of case studies. The goal was to identify how IT Artifacts can be used during the planning phase to determine whether project plans are in line with organizational needs, identify potential risks, build consensus between the company and software supplier, and enhance the quality and accuracy of project plans.

Performance and manufacturability are two important issues that must be taken into account during MEMS design. Existing MEMS design models or systems follow a process-driven design paradigm, that is, design starts from the specification of process sequence or the customization of foundry-ready process template. There has been essentially no methodology or model that supports generic, high-level design synthesis for MEMS conceptual design. As a result, there lacks a basis for specifying the initial process sequences. To address this problem, this paper proposes a performance-driven, microfabrication-oriented methodology for MEMS conceptual design. A unified behaviour representation method is proposed which incorporates information of both physical interactions and chemical/biological/other reactions. Based on this method, a behavioural process based design synthesis model is proposed, which exploits multidisciplinary phenomena for design solutions, including both the structural components and their configuration for the MEMS device, as well as the necessary substances for the chemical/biological/other reactions. The model supports both forward and backward synthetic search for suitable phenomena. To ensure manufacturability, a strategy of using microfabrication-oriented phenomena as design knowledge is proposed, where the phenomena are developed from existing MEMS devices that have associated MEMS-specific microfabrication processes or foundry-ready process templates. To test the applicability of the proposed methodology, the paper also studies microfluidic device design and uses a micro-pump design for the case study.

The purpose of my experimental research in the MFA Design Program has been to develop a working methodology to transfer into a professional graphic design practice upon completion of the program. In my time here, I have built a body of work that clearly expresses my intention, and developed a solid comprehension of the field of design, its discourse, and where my work is situated within it. The intended audience for my work, which tends to fall in the blurred space between design and art, are consumers of image and pop culture in the field, gallery, and public sphere. The projects I’ll present in this report will provide a context for the process by which I arrived at a personal methodology and a narrative for how I came to think about my work up to this point.

Conceptual design is a series of complex cognitive processing tasks and research seeking to further understand design cognition will benefit by considering literature from the field of psychology. This thesis presents two research projects, which sought to understand and mitigate design biases in conceptual design through the application of theories from biological and cognitive psychology. The first of these puts forward a novel model of design creativity based on connectionist theory and a neurological phenomenon known as long-term potentiation. This model is applied to provide new insights into design fixation and develop interventions to assist designers overcome fixation. The second project seeks to establish that cognitive heuristics and biases predictably influence design cognition. Two studies are discussed that examined the role of confirmation bias in design. The first establishes that confirmation bias is present during concept generation; the second demonstrates that decision matrices can mitigate confirmation bias in concept evaluation.
