While mediation is commonly used in custody negotiation, there is no consensus regarding its applicability in domestic violence cases. The aim of this qualitative study in Italy was to explore the role of family mediation in the management of child custody in cases involving domestic violence. Semistructured interviews were conducted with lawyers ( N = 5), social workers ( N = 15), and abused women who had separated from their children’s fathers ( N = 13). Legal documents were also analyzed. The results showed that violence against women and children had often been concealed during mediation, as the professionals involved had failed to detect domestic violence or had labeled it as conflicts. Moreover, the “parental couple” had been dissociated from the “marital couple,” and the responsibility for the abuse had been attributed to both parents. As a result, women and children had been blamed and had experienced secondary victimization, while the perpetrators’ patterns of power and control had continued. The results also revealed that those professionals had not known about and had not applied the Istanbul Convention, which provides guidelines to ensure women’s and children’s safety. Recommendations highlight the need to account for the complexity of domestic violence cases, to hold perpetrators responsible for the abuse, and to support the victims.

AbstractIn spite of the growing public focus on domestic violence (DV) in mainstream Australian society, ethnographers have remained aloof from analysing this problem. In an ethnographic study in the Brisbane region, I analysed people’s perceptions of anti-violence images that were part of a public campaign and assessed the appropriateness of the images’ locations. Occasionally, my interlocutors unexpectedly included accounts of DV. My analysis reveals the tensions between public display and the concealment underlying the campaign. The interlocutors revealed experiences of competing responsibilities related to DV. The use of subtle images of anti-violence in locations filled with competing images, coupled with a failure to consider historical continuities and changes in local imaginaries of violence, exposed the difficulties associated with conveying persuasive messages of DV prevention.

Invisible violence in school physical education can negatively affect students’ body and mind and is detrimental to students’ sports cognition, sports participation, and sound personality cultivation and shaping. We analyze the manifestation and causes of invisible violence in physical education and propose a path to eliminate it, so as to improve the quality of school physical education and promote students’ physical and mental health. In this study, 30 students were interviewed, relevant research data were collected, and coding and clustering were conducted using the rooting theory research method. The results of the study are as follows: Invisible violence in physical education is characterized by concealment, unconsciousness, and indirect harm. According to the 11 characteristics of invisible violence in physical education, invisible violence in physical education is classified as invisible behavioral violence, invisible verbal violence, and invisible discrimination violence. The root causes of invisible violence in physical education are physical education teachers’ lack of understanding of the value of physical education, misplaced transfer of bad emotions and teaching. The root causes of invisible violence in physical education are teachers’ lack of understanding of the value of physical education, misplaced emotions, and the wrong expression of teaching language. The three countermeasures to eliminate invisible violence in physical education are: reshaping physical education teachers’ professional beliefs, improving physical education teachers’ emotional self-management ability, and strengthening physical education teachers’ oral expression ability.

The article describes the types, causes and risk factors of child abuse in the family. Currently, one of the urgent social problems in society is: the impact of domestic violence on children. We see how brutality, violence is escalating, the situation is escalating. The reason for this was the quarrels of parents in the family, the consequences of alcohol and drugs. There are often factors associated with the abduction of children, their trafficking, placement in hard work or the sale of body parts. All these situations are a problem that cannot be solved in the world. It is obvious that a child who has been abused is terrified, such a crime cannot be prevented because of the concealment of children. In this regard, the article provides a comparative analysis of forms of violence against children in Kazakhstan, Russia and abroad. The results of surveys conducted through social networks were also discussed. The systematization of interpretations of the concept of violence in science, as well as categories of child abuse, is proposed.

Este artículo describe y analiza las formas en que los distintos niveles de violencia se concatenan durante la vida, como en la forma de morir, de mujeres en edad reproductiva de Los Altos de Chiapas. La discusión se centra en el análisis de las relaciones sociales en el ámbito institucional, entre las personas, y entre las instituciones y las personas. El análisis se realiza a través de historias individuales y muestra la sociedad en la que viven y fallecen estas mujeres. Pobreza, rezago, insensibilidad, naturalización, encubrimiento, omisión o comisión de la violencia, resultan en efectos perniciosos directos en la salud, educación, y en la posibilidad de sobrevivencia. ABSTRACT This article describes and analyzes the ways in which different levels of violence are linked together during the lives of women of reproductive age in the Los Altos region of Chiapas and the ways in which they die. Discussion is focused on an analysis of social relationships at the institutional level, between individuals, and between institutions and individuals. The authors conduct their analysis through individual histories, and demonstrate the society in which these women live and die. Poverty, backwardness, insensitivity, naturalization, concealment, omission and commission of violence all result in direct harmful effects on the health and education of these women and their possibilities for survival.

The relevance of the research topic is justified by the growing number of cases of domestic violence in the period of lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic introduced by governments around the world. These include: lockdown, restrictions on social contacts and mobility. They aim at slowing down the spread of COVID-19. Financial insecurity, increased stress due to changes in typical daily behavior and social isolation, possibility of perpetrators to control their victims in everyday life during long period of time have resulted in increased level of aggression and growing number of cases of domestic violence. The international community recognizes domestic violence as one of the most common violations of human rights and freedoms of women, men, the elderly persons, children. Almost everywhere in the world, governmental agencies and various civil society organizations consolidate their effort in order to address this problem, emphasizing its concealment and complexity, as well as gaps in legislation framework regulating prevention and combating such violations. This article analyzes the best international practices of addressing domestic violence during the pandemic, as study of these practices can be useful to Ukrainian society for developing its own programs to combat domestic violence in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to specific objectives of the research, a theoretical analysis of the scientific literature and foreign Internet sources was conducted to find out specific measures taken in different countries to address domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed practices of combating domestic violence in Canada, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Moldova, and Belarus and identified key actions taken by governments and leading civil society organizations in these countries. The selected practices encourage critical assessment, deeper study and consideration of implementing the best of them in Ukraine.

Dans cette thèse, nous étudions les stratégies que les pères violents adoptent en contexte de séparation parentale. À partir d’entretiens réalisés avec une vingtaine de femmes qui se sont séparées d’un conjoint violent avec qui elles ont eu des enfants, nous identifions les tactiques employées par les agresseurs avant, pendant et après la séparation : isolement, privation de ressources, contrôle, intimidation, dévalorisation, confusion, sur-responsabilisation et violence. Ces tactiques se cumulent, se combinent et s’entremêlent dans la stratégie visant à maintenir pouvoir et contrôle sur la femme et les enfants victimes. Les réponses sociales et institutionnelles à la violence peuvent reproduire les tactiques repérées, et relever de complicité avec l’agresseur. L’espace pour l’action des victimes, réduit lors de la relation conjugale puis étendu grâce à la séparation, est de nouveau restreint par le principe de l’autorité parentale conjointe, qui implique un maintien du lien pouvant exposer à de nouvelles violences, et soumettre les victimes à un contrôle de leurs activités quotidiennes par l’agresseur. La résistance des femmes à la violence et au contrôle post-séparation et leurs tentatives de protéger les enfants sont alors considérées comme un obstacle à la coparentalité. Les droits parentaux des victimes peuvent être réduits, voire la résidence des enfants transférée chez l’agresseur. Cette analyse souligne les résistances institutionnelles à la prise en compte des violences conjugales post-séparation dans la parentalité
In this thesis, we study the strategies that abusive fathers adopt in the context of parental separation. Based on interviews with twenty women who have separated from an abusive partner with whom they had children, we identify the tactics employed by abusers before, during and after separation: isolation, deprivation of resources, control, intimidation, devaluation, confusion, overburden of responsibility and violence. These tactics accumulate, combine and intertwine in the strategy to maintain power and control over the victimised woman and children. Social and institutional responses to violence may replicate the tactics identified, and may involve complicity with the abuser.The space for action of the victims, reduced during the relationship and then extended by the separation, is again restricted by the principle of joint parental authority, which implies maintaining the link that can expose the victims to further violence and subject them to control of their daily activities by the aggressor.Women's resistance to post-separation violence and control and their attempts to protect the children are then seen as an obstacle to co-parenting. Victims' parental rights may be curtailed or the children's residence transferred to the abuser. This analysis highlights the institutional resistance to taking post-separation domestic violence into account in parenting

The chapter first considers how the issue of commodification was handled in the legislative process that produced the ban on the market for organ transplantations, the political step necessary to make this form of transaction illegal. The second part considers some of the theoretical issues related to the conceptualization of illegality within the domain of exchange, examining the role that violence, secrecy, and the frontier between legality and illegality play in the functioning of illegal transactions. In the final part, the chapter considers three cases of illegal transplantation, paying particular attention to the organizational dimension and to the work of concealment that must be done in order to cross the frontier between the legal and the illegal worlds.

This chapter reviews the perspectives of former combatants that raise a number of methodological questions in addition to the general methodological and ethical issues inherent in any field-based study of armed conflict. It looks into the accounts of soldiers involved in fighting in order to bring to light a unique and hard-to-capture perspective. It also explains why the reliance on soldier narratives raises specific methodological and ethical issues that are inherent in any study of war. The chapter discusses the shifting meanings of violence across different contexts, concealment and censorship. It examines the discursive reframing of violence narratives, the data-loyalty transaction, and the role of emotion in combatant accounts.

This chapter briefly discusses the racial violence and torture investigations conducted against African American suspects and prisoners in the South. The majority of the cases of police violence against African Americans that are examined correspond to the narrow definition of torture which indicates forms of violence used by state and law enforcement officials to acquire information or coerce confessions. The analysis of torture against African American suspects and prisoners shows deliberate concealment of torture supporting the racist system and highlights the difficulty in standing against forms of violence. In addition, recent studies on key events that led to the civil rights movement--such as the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case, the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks’s refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger, and the murder of Emmett Till--recognize African Americans’ struggle for freedom from torture.

An intrinsic and material consequence of mass violence is the corresponding mass production of human corpses. What the perpetrators subsequently do with these corpses varies greatly from one instance to another, and the rationale behind their choice and behaviour is not always clear. If establishing an infallible typology of the treatment of corpses of the victims by the perpetrators thus holds the risk of leading to erroneous extrapolations, the different modalities of treatment all seem to share one point: the use by the perpetrators of the corpses of their victims to make their crimes visible or, to the contrary, to hide them. Focusing on selected cases (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Argentina), this contribution explores how treatments of corpses as diverse as exhibition, mutilation, concealment, or destruction are seldom a random choice and reveal the perverse relationship between perpetrators, violence, and death; between what they show and what they hide.

Discrimination towards the LGBTQIA+ community has an impact on mental health that is described using the minority stress theory by Meyer. The authors are mental health professionals in India who hypothesize that in India, families are the dominant source of minority stress. They explain how in India's collectivistic framework, families are cis-hetero-patriarchal and contribute to distal stress through direct and indirect violence and proximal stress through forcing concealment, internalized homo and trans-negativity, perceived rejection, and internalized guilt. LGBTQIA+ individuals in India use three pathways to manage minority stress: living within the script (i.e., heterosexual marriages and dual lives), subverting the script (i.e., trying to fit queer relationships in a societally acceptable framework), or rewriting the script (i.e., choosing to live alone, having families of choice, and practising non-traditional relationship structures). Legal provisions that aid and inhibit these are discussed. Ways to build community resilience are suggested.

This chapter investigates why so many erotic scenes involving sex between men in contemporary Spanish cinema are often interrupted. While these interruptions are perhaps to be expected in erotic – as opposed to pornographic – films, the frequency and sometimes violence with which they occur is intriguing and troubling. The chapter identifies different strategies of interruption that go from the classic ellipsis with fades to black to literal concealment achieved with distance, poor lighting or visual obstructions such as doors, window blinds or props. In some other cases, other characters enter the scene. These include family members (often female – wives, girlfriends, mothers) but also (often male) strangers that halt the sex act quite suddenly and aggressively mid-way. Importantly, these violent interruptions prevent the kinds of pleasurable identification that are often encouraged in heterosexual erotic scenes, even when the sex act is left to the spectators’ imagination. The study revisits some classic and well-known films by directors including Pedro Almodóvar, Cesc Gay, Eloy de la Iglesia or Gerardo Vera, as well as more recent and lesser-known work including Juanma Carrillo’s short film Fuckbuddies (2011). The analysis of the final case study, Almodóvar’s Los amantes pasajeros/I’m so Excited (2013), suggests that the erotic content of films can sometimes be hidden (and found) in surprisingly conspicuous places.
